Access to Adventure Scenic parkways and well maintained trails are your gateway to the wonders of Waterton. Picnic and campsites are found throughout the Park. Many are easy to access right along roadways.

Enjoy scenic vistas and learn about the features of this special place at road-side exhibits. Spellbinding vistas await at scenic pullouts.

Legend

Waterton is located adjacent to Glacier National Park, Montana. Together, the two parks form Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park. A special experience is the International Peace Park Hike: join a Canadian park interpreter and an American park ranger along the Lakeshore Trail. Offered Wednesdays and Saturdays, check at the Waterton Visitor Centre for more information!

Thrilling Trails - Peaceful Paths Watertonian Cyndi Smith captured this stunning panorama high above tree line on the Alderson-Carthew Trail.

Waterton has some of the best hiking in the Canadian Rockies with 225 kilometers of established trails. Some connect with trails in Glacier National Park, Montana and Akamina-Kishinena Provincial Park in British Columbia.

Guide books and topographical maps are available at village shops. Hire a local guide and share their knowledge of the park. Check Waterton Services listings on page 4. See Trail Map on pages 8-9.

Scenic Parkways

Cycling Pathways

Akamina Parkway / Cameron Lake Begins in the village and runs 16 km (10 mi.) up the Cameron Creek Valley to glacier-formed Cameron Lake. The Discovery Well National Historic Site is found here. It commemorates Western Canada’s first producing oil well. The Continental Divide parallels the roadway and the boundaries of Alberta, British Columbia and Montana converge at Cameron Lake. Open in winter for access to Nordic skiing and snowshoeing.

Red Rock Parkway / Red Rock Canyon Meanders 15 km (9 mi.) over rolling prairie through the Blakiston Valley. It best illustrates “Where the Mountains Meet the Prairie”.

The parkway provides access to Crandell Campground. The parkway follows the ancient Buffalo Trail used by First Nations hunting parties. Learn more at roadside exhibits. Dramatic views of Mt. Blakiston, the park’s highest mountain (2940 m/9645 ft), are complimented by strikingly colored red and green rocks. Red Rock Canyon offers a lovely day use area with trails, exhibits, and picnic shelters.

Chief Mountain International Highway / Belly River Departs Highway #5 east of the Park gate. It leads to Glacier National Park, USA, and the Chief Mountain customs station.

The seasonal road offers dramatic scenic vistas high above the Waterton Valley. Learn more at the exhibit there. The Belly River campground is located along this route. Sacred Chief Mountain dominates the skyline.

Trailhead: 14.4 km along Akamina Parkway

Crandell Loop Trail 4 - 20 km /2.4 - 12 mi. for the entire loop 6km along Akamina Parkway or 6km along Red Rock Canyon road

Kootenai Brown Trail 6.9 km / 13.8 mi. return Multi-use paved trail parallels the park entrance road from the park gate to Linnet Lake parking lot. Great views.

Snowshoe Trail 16.4 km / 10.2 mi. return Trailhead: Red Rock Canyon parking lot

Waterton Village 3.2 km / 2 mi. return

Bison Paddock Circle Drive Located north of the park entrance gate on Highway #6 is the Bison drive-thru paddock. It rolls across a stunning glacial landscape of moraines and eskers. Native grasslands are home to a small herd of plains bison which are direct descendents from the original herds of the Great Plains.

Park Entrance Road / Kootenai Brown The 8 km route from the park gate to the community features outstanding views of the park’s namesake chain of sparkling lakes.

Insider Tip Be Alert - wild animals are killed on park roadways. They can run in front of your car in an instant. Slow down and take time to scan the landscape for the wonders that await you.

This multi-use trail circles the village and meanders along the shoreline. Wheelchairs and bikes can easily maneuver this trail.

Wishbone Trail 13 km / 8.1 mi. return Trailhead: 0.5 km along Chief Mountain Highway Bike rentals available at Pat’s in the village

From the valley floor to alpine cirques, Waterton has an abundance of lakes.

Crystalline springs bubble alongside mountain trails. Waterfalls cascade from cliffy heights. A river flows through.

Riparian pools attract wildlife. Upper Waterton Lake is a Rocky Mountain classic. Deeply carved by glaciers from overthrust sedimentary strata, it is the deepest lake in the Canadian Rockies at 148 m/487 ft.

Pure and clean, its waters originate from the very top of the Continental Divide. Born from melting snowfields and mountain springs, Upper Waterton Lake feeds the Saskatchewan river system that empties into Hudson Bay. Rejuvenating and fun, these waters offer lots of recreational opportunities.

HIKE CANADA’S #1 TRAIL: CRYPT LAKE

Daily water shuttle service provides access to the Crypt Lake trailhead. On the trail to Crypt Lake, hikers will see four impressive waterfalls and pass through a mountain tunnel as they make their way to the lake’s emerald waters.

There are many hiking trails accessible by taking the scenic boat cruise to the Goat Haunt Ranger Station. The most popular trail is Kootenai Lakes, which has some of the best moose habitat in the Park. Hikers can often see multiple moose, as well as other wildlife.

The Suleman family who operate the Bayshore Inn and Waterton-Glacier Suites exemplify the values of the Peace Park.

Once refugees from east Africa whose family holdings were confiscated by an African dictator, the Suleman’s landed in Canada and soon reestablished their businesses. They came to Waterton in the early 90’s.

Now after 25 years, three generations of Sulemans have made the Bayshore and its sister property one of the highest ranking accommodation and food services in the Park.

In addition to their world class hospitality, the family is highly involved in education and peace initiatives worldwide.

The family helps refugees start their Canadian careers by employing them, and have built a school and orphanage overseas.

My favourite part of the shop is how candy brings people down memory lane. As you venture through the store you will glance back to those times growing up and smile.

Where in the world can you find a UNESCO World Heritage Site, an International Peace Park, and a Biosphere Reserve all rolled into one? At Waterton Lakes National Park, part of the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, this is the only place paddling on earth endowed with all photo three titles.

Tucked away in the southwest corner of Alberta, Waterton lies three hours south of Calgary and one and a half hours southwest of Lethbridge. The dramatic collision of prairies and mountains has forged a wealth of distinct habitats – 45 to be precise. The combination of grasslands, wetlands, aspen groves, evergreen forests and alpine tundra has led to an unusual diversity of plant life and is home to a rich variety of wildlife. Watch for bighorn sheep, mountain goats, elk and black bear.

It may be the smallest of our Rocky Mountain parks, but many consider it the hidden jewel in the crown. Hit the back trails and you’re likely to see more wildlife than people. Soak up the sun on the beach of Upper Waterton Lake, or cruise across the water to another country! Hike the infamous Crypt Lake Trail or paddle Cameron Lake. And when the sun slips below the peaks, swap stories over a cold beverage and take in the sweeping panoramas high atop the hill at the iconic Prince of Wales Hotel.

Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park shares parkland in Alberta and Montana and is part of what has become known as the “Crown of the Continent”, 42,000 sq km (16,000 sq mi) of spellbinding scenery spanning the corners of Montana, Alberta and British Columbia.

Birder’s Delight

Insider Tip The Maskinonge is the perfect scenic pullout to enjoy Waterton’s riparian eco-zone (see map pages 8-9).

Here are a few not to be missed scenic viewpoints and photographic locations:

Waterton is considered a birding hot spot.

Over 250 species nest or travel through the Park. Golden eagles soar over mountain ridges during their migrations. Black-headed grosbeaks, lazuli buntings and western tanagers grace forests and shrublands with their spring songs. White-tailed ptarmigan feed near subalpine lakes.Varied thrushes lend an ethereal feeling to ancient subalpine forests. Breathtaking mountain bluebirds and prairie falcons are grassland dwellers.

Common loons carry their chicks on their backs while osprey dive to capture fish in wetland lakes. Careful observers will find American dippers, spotted sandpipers and harlequin ducks amidst mountain streams.

Sandhill Cranes have recently begun to nest in Waterton. Hear their loud clacky calls at the Maskinonge. Enjoy listening and watching for the special birds who call this place home.

A Sacred Place Waterton is a sacred place to the Blackfoot people. It is here that the ancient Beaver Bundle was visioned.

The Beaver Bundle contains the essence of life and is traditionally opened in the spring. You can learn more about the First Nations in Waterton. When driving in, and I first see the mountains, valleys, lakes, grasslands and forests, my heart is joyful and my spirit uplifted. I am returning home once again, to land held dear to humans for over 500 generations. I give thanks to the Piikani ancestors and the spirits that dwell within, as well to the early ranchers who so valued this place they worked hard to protect it. Over 130 years ago they recognized it’s outstanding values and got the lands set aside. Parts of my family have been here ever since. We and our children are today’s keepers. We must all continue the work to ensure Mistakis continues for untold generations. It is a privilege, not a right, to reside in such a place as the winds sent by Napi constantly remind me. mywaterton.ca

Watchable Wildlife Waterton Lakes National Park is one of the best places to view wildlife in the Rocky Mountains.

Moose, bear, elk, deer, pine marten, lynx and 57 other mammals (not to mention 250 species of birds, six species of amphibians, four species of reptiles and 24 species of fish) abound in this 505 square kilometre protected area.

Seeing wildlife can be a special moment in one’s lifetime. Whether it is watching a bear forage for berries on the open slopes along the Red Rock Parkway, or watching a bald eagle fly over the International boat on Upper Waterton Lake, a wildlife encounter is something we never forget. The opportunity to be with wildlife is a privilege. It's important to remember when we're in Waterton Lakes National Park we've entered the home of wildlife. We all have a role to play in helping keep the wildlife natural and safe.

Wildlife Weekend Each fall as many as 1500 elk gather in Waterton for the annual rut. Waterton offers unparalleled opportunities to observe this up close. The elk gather on the Blackiston Fan and visitors can see the dramatic event from their cars. Big bulls joust in combat.

They gather and herd females and work frantically to protect them from other bulls.

The high, shrill elk bugle is incomparable. You can experience this and many other wildlife viewing opportunities at the annual Waterton Wildlife Weekend in September.

Insider Tip • The best time to see wildlife is early morning and evenings.

• Take your time. Wait and watch for animals to move through an area.

• Maintain a safe distance. Many animals have a critical distance where they feel threatened. Give them space.

• Carry binoculars. A lot happens out there if you can see farther afield.

Waterfalls

Waterfalls: the word conjures feelings of awe, serenity, peace. There are hundreds in Waterton, from gentle terraces to dramatic drops.

After a rain storm there is a celebration of water as the mountainside of Crandell and Vimy are flowing with falls of every shape and size.

International Significance Nature knows no political boundary. Waterton shares a common border with adjacent Glacier National Park in Montana. Natural processes are common to both Parks. In 1932, Waterton and Glacier were designated as the world’s first International Peace Park. The Peace Park concept was spawned by Rotary Clubs in Montana and Alberta to commemorate the long friendship between nations. The fundamental concept remains the same and has evolved to include ecosystem management as an important element. Note: Today there are less than 25 peace parks globally, Waterton-Glacier was the first in 1932.

The United Nations bestowed upon it the prestigious World Heritage Site designation. Experience the Peace Park on a scenic boat cruise aboard the International.

Of national significance is the Prince of Wales Hotel. Together with the Discovery Well site on Akamina Parkway the two are designated National Historic Sites of Canada. mywaterton.ca

GPS devices are available on loan and Geocaching training classes start July and August. For more information visit mywaterton.ca Geocaching is a great way to spend time with family and the great outdoors. Geocaching is a treasure hunting game using GPSenabled devices. Use the GPS coordinates and attempt to find the hidden container at a hidden location. Inside the container you will probably find a log book to sign and some trinket to trade. Geocaching is a great way to test your skills with coordinates, clues, teamwork, and adventure.
