BEST IN SHOW NATIONAL FISH & CHIP AWARDS

BEST YET

The 2024 National Fish & Chip Awards held in London recently have been hailed as a great success by the industry. With over 600 in attendance the NFFF led by President Andrew Crook and his team of Josette Foster, Lesley Graves & Caroline Murphy put on another fantastic event. In this month’s Chippy Chat, we have 34 pages dedicated to the event with every winner runner

up and sponsor mentioned. Well done to Ship Deck for taking the Takeaway Crown, just to see the emotion in the room when they won shows just how much it means to them. See pages 1141 for full details.

All too soon the search for the 2025 winners will begin, but until then let’s reflect on this event and its enormous brand value to team fish and chips and the PR it brings.

Oscars Wild!

Onceagain hundreds descended (including me) on London for the highly anticipated 2024 Fish and Chip Awards, the Oscars of our industry! Well done to the NFFF once again for creating this incredible platform for our industry. The board including Andrew Crook, Caroline Murphy, Lesley Graves & Josette Foster all worked incredibly hard to make them happen giving up their own free time and time away from their businesses.

Congratulations of course go to The Ship Deck for taking the overall prize. They run an incredible shop, and have wowed the judges with best practice, they are also lovely people too, we wish them good luck for their year!

The finalists this year for all categories

were all brilliant and judging I am told was a close call indeed.

Well done to all the other finalists and award winners across all the categories. With the right PR skills this competition should provide them all with some good trade uplift in the coming year. A special congratulations goes to our Field to Frier winner Bells Fish & Chips Durham too.

Our front-page partner for March issue is Seafood from Norway the overall sponsor of the awards. We have this year done an unprecedented 34 pages covering the awards, with all winners, runners up and crucially sponsors featured.

As usual please contact me at austen@chippychat.co.uk if you have any news or would like to join us as a partner. Austen

Old Man Greenwood’s Traditional Fish and Chips in Rawtenstall has been serving customers for more than 90 years but are now looking for a new owner to take over the business. It counts local celebrities, including comedian Ted Robbins and actor Sam Aston, who plays Chesney Brown in Coronation Street, among its regular customers.

Soap Star’s Chippy is changing hands

Blacks Business Brokers located in Bury has been appointed by Antony Greenwood to market the chippy with a guide price of £74,950 to take over the business and leasehold premises, which incur a rent of £5,000 per year.

The Bank Street premises has housed a fish and chip shop since 1932 and Mr Greenwood took the business over from former owner Ray Simpson in 2000, having previously worked there cleaning potatoes as a schoolboy. His mother also worked at the chip shop during Mr Simpson’s 34-year tenure. During Mr Greenwood’s more than two decades behind the fryer, the business has established a glowing reputation and fantastic reviews. As well as operating as a takeaway, Old Man Greenwood’s also acts as a fishmonger, selling a wide range of fresh Fleetwood fish and shellfish.

Mr Greenwood, a former joiner and civil engineer who plans to work on other projects once the business has been passed on, has indicated that he would be happy to stay on for a handover period to train a new owner.

John Gaskell, director of Bury-based Blacks Business Brokers, said: “Everyone loves a good chippy, particularly in Lancashire, and Old Man Greenwood’s is one of the best.

“Antony’s will be big shoes to fill, but he has laid amazing foundations for the next owner to take this Rawtenstall institution onward to its centenary and beyond. With its busy town centre location, there would certainly be scope for a new owner to increase revenues by extending the shop’s opening hours. There is also a growing trend for fish and chip shops to offer a delivery service, which could potentially prove to be very popular in a relatively densely populated area like Rawtenstall.”

Jingle Gels!

A popular fish and chip shop has just reopened under the ownership of two brothers who already run takeaways in Morecambe and Bolton-le-Sands

Cem and Cihan Öktem have taken on Jingling Lane Fish & Chips in Kirkby Lonsdale, after also opening Priory Plaice Fish and Chips in Ulverston in April. Öktem Kitchens has been in the industry for more than 15 years since taking over Packet Bridge Fish and Chips in Bolton-le-Sands in February 2008.

They then took on Westgate Fish & Chips in Morecambe in November 2019.

Cem, who is the shop manager at Packet Bridge, is a former Young Fish Frier of the Year Finalist in 2013 and 2014. He has also been a trainer at the National Federation of Fish Friers training school since 2017.

Jingling Lane Fish & Chips Shop is now officially open in Kirkby Lonsdale after undergoing a refurbishment. When they first took it on last year they said: “This shop has been on our radar since 2016 when we rebranded Packet Bridge! It’s a huge milestone for us as both a business and as a family we are extremely proud!

“The shop required a new lease of life so it was closed for a full refurbishment which will make it unrecognisable to its customers, as it will be done to the same standard as Westgate Fish & Chips.”

The brothers are looking for new staff to complete the team, including full and part-time fish fryers and part-time counter assistants.

TAKEAWAY OF THE YEAR AT THE NATIONAL FISH AND CHIP AWARDS

Top Deck!

Ship Deck wins Takeaway of the Year

Sponsored by

It’s the industry recognition that every fish and chip shop hopes to achieve and it’s Ship Deck, Caerphilly which has bagged the coveted National Fish and Chip Awards’ Takeaway of the Year title

The National Fish and Chip Awards is in its 36th year of acknowledging and championing businesses and individuals throughout the UK and beyond that make outstanding contributions to the foodservice industry. It also recognises great customer service, the opportunities industry professionals can access to further their growth, and most importantly, it’s a celebration of the nation’s love of fish and chips.

The category was sponsored by BD Signs, Friars Pride, Henry Colbeck, Kraft Heinz, McWhinney’s, OilChef, Pukka, Smales and VA Whitley. Following months of nerve-racking assessments, a panel of industry experts scaled 40 hopefuls down to 20 and then 10 final businesses which were evaluated against criteria including environmental best practice, product knowledge, employer accountability and mystery visits.

Awards organiser and President of the National Federation of Fish Friers Andrew Crook comments: “It’s the one every chip shop wants, so congratulations

to Ryan & Kimberley Hughes for scooping the Takeaway of the Year award. The calibre of applicants this year has been absolutely superb, so we applaud all the finalists, but the hard work and long hours put in to serve countless portions of delicious fish and chips has truly paid off for The Ship Deck. Well done!”

Seafood from Norway is the principal sponsor for the awards, with Victoria Braathen, UK Director of the Norwegian Seafood Council, adding: “It’s been wonderful to follow the journey of so many innovative and dedicated fish and chip shops across the country for this year’s Awards, and we congratulate Ship Deck with this brilliant achievement. We’re honoured to have been part of the fish and chip scene for so long in the UK, supplying quality cod and haddock to quality shops. We look forward to welcoming The Ship Dack together with all the esteemed award winners to Norway!”

They have been invited to visit Norway in June for a once in a lifetime experience with Seafood from Norway.

The two-day study trip will take fish and chip shop teams on an unforgettable exploration of the Norwegian fishing industry, experiencing the cold, clear waters aboard the state-of-the-art longliner and Danish seine vessel, Østerfjord, to learn more about environmental and sustainable practices that ensure UK fish and chip shops are supplied with the freshest, highest quality produce.

They will also meet leading industry authorities and stakeholders to find out how fish stocks are sustained, as well as learning about the ocean-to-plate journey of frozen at sea white fish.

Yarm Road Fish & Chips came second, whilst The Fish Works from Largs came third.

Austen Dack Chippy Chat Editor said: “Ryan & Kimberley have worked tirelessly to win this prize. It was brilliant to see them and the team on the top step. We wish them well as they celebrate over the coming year.”

Awards organiser and President of the National Federation of Fish Friers Andrew Crook comments: “Congratulations to Redcloak Fish Bar for this amazing achievement. Bells Fish & Chips beats the competition to scoop Field to Frier award

Chip shops from around the country have been eagerly eyeing up the National Fish and Chip Awards’ prestigious Field to Frier prize and now Bells Fish & Chips has been revealed as the potato champ at this year’s ceremony.

The judging process was extensive and intensive, with the three chip shop finalists required to pull out all the stops to showcase their potato expertise from seasonal variety selection, chip preparation, storage methods and frying capabilities to produce golden, crisp and fluffy results to the highest standard every time.

Awards organiser and President of the National Federation of Fish Friers Andrew Crook, says: “Field to Frier is an extremely competitive category and it hasn’t been easy to separate the finalists. However, the breadth of knowledge when it comes to policies

and processes associated with potato sourcing, the preparation and mastery of cooking them to perfection as shown by Bells is so advanced and is the reason why the chippy has been awarded this accolade.”

Isle of Ely Produce, supplier of more than two million bags of potatoes to the fish and chip industry annually sponsored the award alongside Agrico and its Babylon variety - a newcomer in the potato game which is proving to be a hit with UK chippies.

Alex Moore, sales manager for Agrico UK who grow Babylon, comments: “It is fantastic to announce Bells as the winner of the Field to Frier award. We congratulate them on their work promoting best use of how to store prep and fry potatoes and look forward to working with them in the year ahead.”

Isle of Ely Produce Director Oliver Boutwood adds: “This is our tenth year in supporting the National Fish and Chip Awards. It is great to see in that time the growth of our ‘Field to Frier’ platform. We have had over 1,000 chip shop owners visit our farm, plus we have brought the chip shop owners closer to the farmers in order for them to both understand exactly what it takes to make a great chip.”

Ivan the Great!

Over the past 14 years, the McWhinney family has had the privilege to be represented across the industry by their Sales and Marketing manager, Ivan Bond. Many of you will have seen him at trade shows the length and breadth of the country during that time, often accompanied by his wife Roberta. His knowledge, honesty and integrity has earned him great respect, and many friendships throughout the fish and chip community.

McWhinney’s are sad to announce that, as of 2024, Ivan has now retired.

Ivan and Roberta are always spoken so highly of at trade shows, having sparked friendships with other suppliers, distributors, and customers alike. Ivan is always keen to remind the sales team, “always be sure to offer hot dogs to other exhibitors. That way you can get a good trade for some lunch!”

After a brief retirement in 2019, Ivan kindly came back to McWhinney’s to help train myself, Scott McWhinney and Joe McClean in our roles in Sales and Marketing. During that time, the trio have spent many long days in airports and questionable rental cars, including Ivan’s favourite, the hot pink Fiat 500!

Kevin McWhinney said, “We have been very fortunate to have Ivan working with us for as long as he has. I am personally very grateful for him agreeing to come back to the company to train Scott and Joe – they couldn’t have had a better mentor. I wish Ivan (and don’t forget Roberta too) a very happy retirement.”

a very long and happy retirement and I’m sure there will always be a warm welcome for him at events and in fish and chip shops around the UK.”

For anyone that has had the pleasure of meeting Ivan during his time at McWhinney’s will know that he is passionate not just about the McWhinney’s brand but the industry as a whole. He has always promoted the importance of using quality ingredients and providing a quality service.

His hard work over and friendly demeanour has helped McWhinney’s become one of most recognisable brands within the fish and chips industry.

Scott McWhinney said this, “I know that the industry will feel Ivan’s absence keenly. He speaks with a level of authority that can only be gained by loving and believing in what you do. I got a training second to none and an introduction to the industry that is priceless for while I will always be grateful.

“ivan also has an unequalled knowledge of the main historical sites of interest in the UK, most of which we visited while on the road. It is rare enough to be able to say that the colleague I started working with quickly became a close friend.”

Ivan’s reputation in the industry is second to none, with NFFF President Andrew Crook saying, “Ivan has been a stalwart for McWhinney’s and for brand fish and chips. All at the NFFF wish Ivan

Joe McClean, “Working alongside Ivan has been a pleasure. His industry knowledge is second to none. It is clear to see why the expansion of McWhinney’s has been so successful when you see the relationships that Ivan has built over the years. He has helped guide me, passed on his knowledge and above all, is a great friend.”
