Big ideas from Collins Seafoods for National Fish & Chip Day

By Heidi George

First launched in 2015, National Fish & Chip Day is a huge day for our industry. Run by the National Edible Oil Distributors’ Association and falling on June 2nd this year, the day was created to raise awareness of the significant British dish, and there are plenty of ways to celebrate it. Being the country’s leading supplier of Frozen at Sea fish, our customers are the heart and soul of our business, and we are consistently searching for ways to help them succeed. Therefore, we have compiled a list of examples that may inspire you to participate in the campaign…

1) Hide fish and chip vouchers around the area where your business is located

This idea was inspired by something that The Bearded Sailor did in 2019 –the team placed vouchers all around the town of Pudsey, where the shop is based, for people to find and enjoy some delicious free food. Not only was this a fun activity for children and families, but it was a money-saver for the lucky finders. A memorable activity such as this could attract new customers who become regulars once they have tried the high quality food and experienced fantastic service.

2) First 30 customers get a discount on their order

It could be buy one get one half price, 10% off on orders over £30, or half price on selected sundries – whatever you choose, customers are sure to arrive early and make it in before everyone else so they can secure the best deal. Happy clients may also share the news with their friends and family, or on their social media platforms, which can be great exposure for your business.

3) Spread the word on social media

Social media is a powerful marketing tool, and to support chippies celebrating this event, the NEODA website offers free downloadable resources to use on your company pages, which can be used to personalise your own assets. By videoing what you get up to, you could create an Instagram reel or TikTok video. And don’t forget to add hashtags to connect with others who may be getting involved!

4) Giveaway draw

As previously mentioned, social media is a great way to attract visitors to your shop. Why not create a post asking people to “like” and “share” it to be in with a chance of winning a free chippy tea for two? Sharing the post around means more people will become aware of your page and presence.

5) Dress up

From branded t-shirts to full-on fancy dress costumes – the world is your oyster! Some of our clients in the past have dressed up as sea creatures, with Oliver’s Fish and Chips choosing a giant crab and Seabreeze selecting a large fish. These costumes were a great way to attract people into shops, and the curious customers just kept coming.

We can’t wait to see how our customers celebrate this significant awareness day –make sure to tag us on social media and show us what you get up to!
