The rest of the turban is white, as are his robes which highlight his dark skin and white beard and eyebrows, the individual hairs on his face each delineated. Both depictions feature the sitter’s distinctive hook nose and upward tilting chin.

Pierre Sterlé (1905-1978) was known as the “couturier of jewellery” and his work achieved its zenith in the 1940s and 50s. Following the death of his father in the First World War, he was sent to live with his uncle, a Parisian jeweller. Before the age of 30 he established his own workshop and was designing for established French jewellery houses such as Boucheron and Chaument. Earlier supporters of his work included the writer Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette and then later King Farouk of Egypt and the Begum Aga Khan.
