While living in Paris in 1789, he became acquainted with Marat, Camille Desmoulins and Robespierre. After returning to Lyons, Chalier was the first person to be named as a member of the municipal bureau. While in this position he organised the national guard, applied the civil constitution of the clergy, and engineered the finances of the city so that the rich were heavily taxed and the poor relatively spared.
48
Chalier became the leader of the Jacobins of Lyons and with other revolutionary clubs and communes in the city, he led the arrest of a great number of Royalists during the nights of 5 and 6 February, 1793. This brought him into direct conflict with the mayor of Lyons, who had the support of the National Guard. Undeterred, Chalier demanded of the Convention an establishment of a revolutionary tribunal and a revolutionary army stationed in Lyons. The Convention refused and the anti-revolutionary party took action. On 29 and 30 May, 1793, the different sections of the Convention rose against him. The Jacobins were dispossessed of the municipality and Chalier was arrested. On 15 July, he was brought before the criminal tribunal of the Rhône-et-Loire, which condemned him to death. 146 SIR LAWRENCE ALMA-TADEMA OM RA (BRITISH 1836 - 1912) A Generous Smile Signed l.l. Watercolour 20 x 20cm (8 x 8in) Provenance: Gifted by the painter himself to Maria (Marie) Catharina Leytens, the sister of Philomena Leytens, whose hand he had once sought in marriage as a young unknown artist in Antwerp, but was rejected by her father for his lack of prospects! The present owners are the great great grandchildren of Marie Leytens to whom the painting was presented. Footnote: Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, (born Lourens Alma Tadema) was a Dutch painter of special British denizenship. Born in Dronrijp, the Netherlands, and trained at the Royal Academy of Antwerp, Belgium, he settled in England in 1870 and spent the rest of his life there. A classical-subject painter, he became famous for his depictions of the luxury and decadence of the Roman Empire, with languorous figures set in fabulous marbled interiors or against a backdrop of dazzling blue Mediterranean Sea and sky. Though admired during his lifetime for his draftsmanship and depictions of Classical antiquity, his work fell into disrepute after his death, and only since the 1960s has it been re-evaluated for its importance within nineteenth-century British art. £2,000-£3,000

150 SIMEON SOLOMON (BRITISH 1840-1905) Head of Christ Signed with monogram and dated 1886 Pencil 25.8 x 22cm (101⁄4 x 85⁄8in) Provenance: Private collection London Born to a wealthy Orthodox Jewish family, Simeon Solomon attended the Royal Academy and was inspired and later feted by the PreRaphaelite Brotherhood. He achieved considerable artistic status but his reputation was destroyed when Solomon was arrested in London in 1873 and subsequently arrested and tried in Paris for sodomy. He suffered persecution for both his homosexuality and semitism, although he did not present himself as a champion for either. He might have heralded a change in attitudes and re-asserted his visionary art as a refutation to Victorian morality, but was tainted by his ‘disgrace’, not least from the artistic community, and sank into obscurity. His reputation was only revived in the late 1960’s and more recently in the Tate’s Queer British Art exhibition. Christ has been depicted by Simeon Solomon in the wilderness in his introspection, and also in dialogue with St Peter or St John; here, the tight composition of head and shoulders shows the haloed Christ now looking up and at the moment of his post-temptation awakening. The delicate rendering of hair and unrequited expression are typical characteristics of Solomon’ s androgynous subjects. £1,500-£2,500

Joseph Edward Southall RWS NEAC RBSA (23 August 1861 – 6 November 1944) was an English painter associated with the Arts and Crafts movement.A leading figure in the nineteenth and early twentieth-century revival of painting in tempera, Southall was the leader of the Birmingham Group of ArtistCraftsmen—one of the last outposts of Romanticism in the visual arts, and an important link between the later PreRaphaelites and the turn of the century Slade Symbolists.A lifelong Quaker, Southall was an active socialist and pacifist, initially as a radical member of the Liberal Party and later of the Independent Labour Party. Southall was elected an Associate of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists (RBSA) in 1898 and Member in 1902. He became President of the Society in 1939 and stayed in this post until his death in 1944. In 1937 Southall underwent an operation from which he never really recovered. After several years of ill health, during which he doggedly continued to paint, he died of heart failure at his home in Edgbaston in 1944. The present work was painted in the year he died at his home in Edgbaston and may have been one of his last works. £500-£700

200 FRANCIS NEWTON SOUZA (INDIAN 1924 - 2002) Secretary Bird and Cobra Signed top left, Souza 59 Ink 23.5 x 15.5cm (91⁄4 x 61⁄4in) Footnote: The cobra appears to be female in form, a Nagin, but is here perhaps an object of prey poised to retaliate rather than one of veneration. In its more dangerous posture, the power of the snake in Indian art is expressed in an erect form with hood open. The drawing was produced during his time in London, at the height of his success there at Gallery One. 1959 was also the year of publication of his autobiographical book, Words and Lines. “I do not unwrap myself when I paint. I unwrap myself when I write. When I press a tube, I coil. Every brush stroke makes me recoil like a snake struck with a stick. I hate the smell of paint. Painting for me is not beautiful. It is as ugly as a reptile. I attack it. It coils and recoils making fascinating patterns. I am not, however, interested in patterns. Otherwise I’d spend my days watching clouds or women’s fabrics. It is the serpent in the grass that is really fascinating. Glistening, jewelled, writhing in the green grass. Poisoned fangs and coldblooded. Slimy as squeezed paint. Green hood, white belly from chin to tail, yellow eyes, red forked tongue, slimy; careful not to put your foot on it; treacherous like Satan yet beautiful like Him”. (Words and Lines, Villiers, London, 1959; p. 10/11) £1,500-£2,000

202 ATTRIBUTED TO ROGER DE. LA FRESNAYE (FRENCH 1885 1925) Three sketches on one sheet of figurative subjects in landscapes Pencil 20 x 12cm (73⁄4 x 43⁄4in) Footnote: Roger de la Fresnaye is most commonly considered a disciple of Cubism, even though his subjects remained representational and never fully abstracted. Fresnaye studied at the Académie Julian, the École des Beaux-Arts, and Academie Ranson where he worked under Maurice Denis and Paul Sérusier, both of whom were hugely influential in Fresnaye’s work. He was also attracted to both Symbolist and Expressionist styles before finally adopting Cubism’s geometric deconstructions of form. Fresnaye also became involved with the Puteaux group, which assembled in the studio of Jacques Villon, and the Section d’Or. He drew inspiration from Paul Cézanne’s abstractions and Robert Delunay’s Orphism. Towards the end of his career, he abandoned avant-garde forms and became a champion of traditional realism. £800-£1,200
