1 A diamond tiara / necklace, early 20th century The tiara designed as a series of ten-ray stars, above a detachable line of graduating trefoil and crescent motifs, accompanied by a knifewire backchain, convertible into a necklace, set throughout with cushion-shaped and rose-cut diamonds, cushion-shaped diamonds approx. 17.70 carats total, necklace length 39.0cm, tiara inner diameter 13.0cm £4,000-£6,000 For many centuries head ornaments of various types have been worn to denote rank and honour, such as the laurel wreaths awarded to athletes in Ancient Greece. Due in part to improved lapidary techniques and a greater availability of gemstones, the nineteenthcentury saw the emergence of elaborately gem-set tiaras of the type which we are most familiar with today. Queen Victoria possessed an exquisite collection of jewels, and was particularly fond of tiaras, which she wore to establish her royal identity. This in turn prompted her female subjects to follow suit. The tiara became a mainstay of fashion amongst the British upperclasses throughout the Empire, which endured into the twentieth-century. A crowning glory, hair ornaments were a prominent mean’s of displaying one’s wealth and were worn to a multitude of events, from intimate social occasions and operas, to weddings and ceremonies of state. They were manufactured both at home and abroad, taking centre stage at grand spectacles both in Britain and throughout the colonial Empire.

In the midst of the Second World War, the birth of a princess lifted the spirits of the people and Georg Jensen saw the daisy as a perfect symbol of hope. 58 A dress ring, by Henning Koppel for Georg Jensen Of elongated form, designed to wrap around the finger, signed Georg Jensen, pattern 99, ring size M £100-£150 Henning Koppel (1918-1981) studied sculpture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. In 1945, he secured a contract at Georg Jensen and remained there for the entirety of his life. His works are highly sculptural and devoid of embellishment where the forms themselves are the decoration. Koppel was quoted as saying, “I’m sick to death of all that Functionalism nonsense. The utility value is not the main aim… it has to be a wonderful thing to look at. In my view everything must first and foremost be beautiful... 59 A silver bracelet, by Bent Gabrielsen Pedersen for Hans Hansen Designed as elongated triangular overlapping silver links, signed Hans Hansen, pattern 238, sponsor’s mark DSD, UK import mark, length 17.7cm £80-£120 This bracelet was designed in 1958 by Pedersen for the Hans Hansen firm. Hans Hansen (1884-1940) was a Danish designer and silversmith. In 1906, he opened a workshop in Kolding, Denmark, which was taken over by his son Karl Gustav following his death in 1940. Whilst Hansen retailed his jewellery independently, he supplied various designs which were manufactured and retailed by Georg Jensen. In 1991 the firm was taken over by Georg Jensen. The bracelet was later given the name ‘Peak’ and is still in production.
