PROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF CHRISTOPHER FRY Playwright, Educator, Poet, Actor 1907-2005 (Lots 121-130, 171)
Christopher Fry (18 December 1907 – 30 June 2005) was one of the most celebrated English poets and playwrights of the 20th century and the leading figure, together with T.S. Eliot, in the revival of poetic drama. In 1948 he emerged with his lively verse play, “The Lady’s Not for Burning” and was able to consolidate his position in the 1950’s and 1960’s with a series of plays in free verse, including Venus Observed, Ring Around the Moon and The Boy With the Cart. He worked with all the biggest names of the British stage, from John Gielgud to Laurence Olivier and occasionally lent his talents to Hollywood, helping with the script of Ben Hur and other movies. In the 1970’s and 1980’s he worked on several translations and wrote TV series and a short play about the early religious poet Caedmon for performance in Chelmsford Cathedral. He was a passionate collector of fine art and amassed a large collection with a focus on British 18th, 19th & 20th century artists. Christopher Fry had a tremendous respect and love for David Tindle. They communicated frequently and visited each other. The Fry house was filled with works by Tindle and the artist was regarded as part of the family. Lots 121-126 are a great selection from the collection and most of them have never been shown to the public before.

‘Few British painters have provided in their drawings so complete and revealing a conspectus of their aesthetic, intellectual, and intuitive objects, as L. S. Lowry. His drawings for the most part are intended to be complete in themselves… Lowry learned how to extract from the medium of pencil a rich, wide range of qualities. Even an approximation of ‘colour’…In his industrial drawings, the artist gradually refined a composite townscape which was to be no place in particular, and yet all places of its kind. At the same time he was evolving a race of people; no particular people, and yet all people, of their kind’. (See M. Levy, Drawings of L. S. Lowry, London, 1963, pp.7, 14.)

172 ARR WILLIAM RATCLIFFE (1870-1955) The breakfast table signed ‘W. Ratcliffe.’ (lower right) oil on canvas 311⁄2 x 251⁄4 in. (80 x 64 cm.) Provenance: with Ernest, Brown, Phillips, Leicester Galleries, London. £8,000-£12,000
Ratcliffe spent almost 20 years designing wallpaper before turning to painting upon the strong encouragement of Harold Gilman who he met in 1908. In 1910 he attended the Slade School of Fine Art and in the meantime attended Fitzroy Street meetings. He was part of the Camden Town Group before World War I and amongst the founder members of the London Group. With the guidance and support of Gillman, Ratcliffe spent time with Sickert painting in Dieppe and also went to Sweden. He exhibited in a number of the leading London galleries at the time: Carfax, NEAC, Goupil, Roland, Browse and Delbanco and in America. Typical for his interiors, The breakfast table focuses on the domestic kitchen space and view behind. The paint is applied in a broken touch, a technique learned from Lucien Pissarro, who moved to London in 1890. His use of separate touches of pure colour inspired many of the Firzroy Street Artists. The breakfast table with its luminous palette and beautiful details is a great example of Ratcliffe’s own approach to still life and a showcase for the need of a wider appreciation of the talent of this lesser known Camden Town Group artist. I want a simple approach to living and doing. I want a life and work that reflects the balance and continuity of nature. Identifying with the time and energy of the tree and with its mortality, I find myself drawn deeper into the joys and blows of nature. Worn down and regenerated; broken off and reunited; dormant faith is revived in the new growth on old wood David Nash, 1978
Birch Bowl was created in Otoineppu, Japan as part of the Three Seasons project Nash was invited to work on in 1994. In his own words the artist describes the special nature of the Otoineppu village as a place: ‘where the crafts and arts are very much alive. The Ainu sculptor Sunazawa Bikky moved from Sappporo in 1978 to the village where his art and personality worked into the community. Inside and outside the post office, railway station, forestry office and village office there is sculpture. The High School has an unique emphasis on the crafts and woodwork, weaving and ceramics. Sunazawa Ryoko, Bikky's widow, hosts a sculpture workshop every summer. The Hokkaido University experimental forest is based at Otoineppu. The village is alive with the art of growing and carving wood...All these factors...created a very special environment in which we could realise this project through the seasons of Spring, Summer and Winter 1993-94.’ (See D.Nash, David Nash Otoineppu Spirit of Three Seasons, Sapporo, 1994).
