10 10 ENGLISH SCHOOL, CIRCA 1630 Portrait of a lady, half-length, in a black and white embroidered dress, embellished with pearls and a ruff collar oil on canvas 303⁄4 x 25 in. (78.2 x 63.5 cm.) PROVENANCE: Colonel Frederick Arthur Irby, Boyland Hall, Moningthorpe, by 1907, and by descent to, Mrs Victor Ramsay Fairfax of Brook House, Great Waldingfield, Sudbury, Suffolk, her sale; Christie’s, London, 18 April 1957, lot 10 (as Zuccaro). 11 AFTER SIR PETER LELY Portrait of King Charles II (1630-1685) with inscription ‘Charles the Second / King of England’ (lower right) oil on canvas 49 x 39 in. (124.4 x 99.1 cm.) £2,000-£3,000

12 ENGLISH SCHOOL, CIRCA 1660s Portrait of a gentleman, traditionally identified as Andrew Marvell (1621-1678) oil on canvas, unframed 293⁄4 x 29 in. (75.6 x 66 cm.) The sitter has been traditionally identified as Andrew Marvell, an important poetical figure in the English metaphysical movement alongside John Milton and John Donne, best known for his poem, To his Coy Mistress (1681). It has been called into question whether the sitter is indeed Marvell, because he has been depicted with blue eyes. An earlier depiction of the poet in the National Portrait Gallery depicts him with brown eyes, a rounder face, and shorter hair. Also, John Aubrey’s Brief Lives, a contemporary account of Marvell, describes him as ‘of middling stature, pretty strong sett, roundish faced, cherry-cheek’t, hazell eie, brown haire’. £2,000-£3,000

13 CIRCLE OF JOHN MICHAEL WRIGHT (LONDON 1617-1694) Portrait of George Monck (1608-1670), 1st Duke of Albemarle, threequarter-length, in armour, a landscape with Charles II landing at Dover in 1660 beyond inscribed ‘GIORGIO MONK [sic] DUCA DI ALBERMALE [sic] CAPITAN GENERALE / DEL REGNO D’INGHILTERRA, E DUE VOLTE AMMIRAGLIO DEL M’ (along the top edge) oil on canvas, unframed 495⁄8 x 403⁄8 in. (126 x 102.5 cm.) This portrait celebrates the key role that Monck played in the Restoration Settlement in 1660 that led to the return of Charles II to Great Britain, which undoubtedly marked the very height of Monck’s distinguished career. Monck had skilfully masterminded the
agreement between Parliament and the exiled Stuart court. He was ideally positioned to negotiate a peaceful change of power; he was a member of the council of state and commander-in-chief of all military units in Britain. In return, Monck was created Baron Monck of Potheridge, Beauchamp, and Teyes, Earl of Torrington and Duke of Albemarle. He was also made Master of the Horse in the restored Royal court and presented with the insignia of the Garter by the King himself. The prime version of this particular composition is in the Uffizi Gallery, Florence. Two further portraits by Wright of Monck, which differ in composition from the present lot, exist. One of which appeared on the art market in 2009, formerly at Powderham Castle, and the other currently at Longleat House. £7,000-£10,000 9
14 14 JOSEPH WRIGHT OF DERBY (DERBY 1734-1797) Portrait of a lady, traditionally identified as Susannah Fenton, in a blue and pink dress with a feathered hat, feigned oval with inscription ‘Miss Fenton Granddaughter to / John Wedgwood Esq of Harracles / Drawn in Yr Year 1755.’ (on an old label on the stretcher) oil on canvas 297⁄8 x 247⁄8 in. (75.9 x 63.2 cm.) LITERATURE: (probably) B. Nicolson, Joseph Wright of Derby: Painter of Light, London and New York, 1968, I, p. 196. We are grateful to Brian Allen for confirming the attribution on the basis of a photograph. The label on the reverse identifies the sitter as Susannah Fenton, only daughter of Susannah Wedgwood (b.1699) and John Fenton (16931743). Miss Fenton was the granddaughter of John Wedgwood of Harracles (1669-1757), Harracles Hall, Longsdon, Staffordshire. According to the London Chronicle of 16-22 February 1763, Miss Fenton married Captain John Daniell in Litchfield. Daniell was a captain in Colonel Burton’s regiment, an infantry rifle regiment of the British army who fought successfully against the Cherokees in the Anglo-Cherokee war (1758-1761).
10
The present lot is an excellent example of Wright of Derby’s early portraits. A Miss Fenton is recorded three times in the artist’s account book. Nicholson noted it amongst the early portraits of c.1760. However, the more recent discovery of the portrait of Anne Bateman, which is signed and dated 1755, shed a new light on dating the artist’s early works. Wright of Derby commenced his training in Thomas Hudson’s studio in 1751 and returned to Derby in 1753, where he settled for a while and painted family and friends. The present lot can be dated to this period. In 1756 he returned to Hudson’s studio to finalise his training. Wright of Derby had close ties with local community and was associated with members of the illustrious Lunar Society, a group of Midlands intellectuals, industrialists and scientists that challenged established beliefs and pioneered in research and innovation. The likes of Erasmus Darwin (grandfather of Charles) and Josiah Wedgwood were members of the society and the latter was one of the artist’s most important patrons. Furthermore, Josiah was a distant relative of the sitter’s grandfather. £6,000-£8,000

There is another portrait by Lawrence, of the same size as the present in lot, at Windsor Castle. Goldsmith was a Conservative Party politician who served as a MP. Born in Germany, the Major’s political career came to an end due to anti-German sentiment during the First World War. Goldsmith, a friend of Winston Churchill, left Britain to serve in Gallipoli and never returned due to his feelings of betrayal. He settled in Paris subsequently where he became a director of a chain of luxury hotels. The present lot refers to a famous fresco depicting the Nursing Madonna in the Santuario della Madonna del Sangue, in Re, Val Vigezzo, Italy. In 1494, a stone hit the fresco and it miraculously started to bleed. Therefore this painting depicts the Virgin with drops of blood on her forehead.

FROM THE COLLECTION OF CHRISTOPHER FRY (1907-2005) Playwright, Educator, Poet, Actor Lots 48 & 49
Christopher Fry was one of the most celebrated English poets and playwrights of the 20th century and the leading figure, together with T.S. Eliot, in the revival of poetic drama. In 1948 he emerged with his lively verse play, “The Lady’s Not for Burning” and was able to consolidate his position in the 1950s and 1960s with a series of plays in free verse, including “Venus observed”, “Ring Around the Moon” and “The Boy With the Cart”. He worked with all the biggest names of the British stage, from John Gielgud to Laurence Oliver and occasionally lent his talents to Hollywood, helping with the script of Ben Hur and other movies. In the 1970s and 1980s he worked on several translations and wrote TV series and a short play about the early religious poet Caedmon for performance in Chelmsford Cathedral. He was a passionate collector of fine art and amassed a large collection.

76 FRANCESCO TREVISANI (CAPODISTRIA 1656-1746 ROME) Mary of Egypt oil on canvas 383⁄4 x 52 in. (98.4 x 132.1 cm.) PROVENANCE: Anonymous sale; Christie’s, Rome, 3 June 1997, lot 430. Karin Wolfe has confirmed the attribution after first-hand inspection. This is an autograph version of the original in the Galleria Nazional d’Arte Antica, Rome. Though the subject of the prime version is described as being Mary Magdalene, it has recently been discovered that both the present lot and the version in Rome include three loaves of bread, traditionally the only food that Mary of Egypt took with her into the desert after her conversion to Christianity.
The story of St. Mary of Eygpt originated in Jacobus de Voragine’s Golden Legend. She was a prostitute in ancient Alexandria before she went to Jerusalem, where she became a Christian. She lived in the desert as a hermit, going without food for years. According to the Legend, the three loaves of bread lasted her for seventeen years. Francesco Trevisani was taught how to draw by his father Antonio, an architect, and trained under the artist Antonio Zanchi (1631-1722) in Venice. He settled in Rome and counted Cardinal Flavio Chigi (1631-1693) and Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni (1667-1740), nephew of Pope Alexander VIII, amongst his patrons. Ottoboni was Trevisani’s most significant supporter for over 35 years. Trevisani shared the Cardinal’s enthusiasm for art in all its forms, in addition to being a painter, he was also a poet, amateur actor and dramatist. By 1713 Trevisani became one of the most prolific and prosperous painters in Rome. His works were greatly in demand from the clergy, Roman nobility and across Europe. £5,000-£7,000

(54.3 x 107.3 cm.); 223⁄4 x 441⁄8 in. (57.8 x 112.1 cm.) a pair (2) PROVENANCE: (the former) Property of Sir Harold Parkinson, J.P., Christie’s, London, 9 May 1969, lot 57. (both) The Clive Lloyd Collection. In these powerful paintings, the line of prison ships form a dark diagonal across the images from the left foreground to the centre of the picture. Behind these ships, to the south-east, lies the town of Portsmouth, its skyline visible against the sky in the centre, with Gosport to the right and the entrance to the Harbour in the centre.
46
To the right other ships, with pennants flying, are also anchored ‘in ordinary’ (reserve) in the Upper Harbour. A swathe of pink cloud dominates the sky, but the sea contrasts darkened areas on the hulks to the more brilliant light above the channel, which leads the viewer’s eye to the open sea and France – an emotional longing by Garneray to escape his long internment. Pirate, privateer, French Naval officer and Painter to the Emperor Ambroise Louis Garneray was an archetypal ‘Renaissance Man’. His father was an artist and pupil to the great Jacques-Louis David, which gave Garneray an excellent artistic upbringing. Ambroise, however, persuaded his father to let him go to sea at the tender age of 13 as part of the French Navy, and he soon found himself in the Indian Ocean off Ile de France (modern day Mauritius). When there was a shortage of Naval vessels, Ensign Garnerary decided to join the famous Breton privateer Robert Surcouf, and become the scourge of East India Company shipping in the Indian Ocean. During this time Surcouf captured the Royal Navy’s HMS Kent near the coast of India thus taking a fortune in prize money, and Garneray not only received his share of booty, but was also asked to paint pictures of the heroic action as an eye-witness and crew member. In March 1806 after various privateering and trading trips, Garneray was captured by the English and spent the next 8 years on a Prisoner of War hulk in Portsmouth harbour. The loss of the American colonies in the 1770s as a place to send prisoners condemned to transportation, created an acute shortage of prison space. There was no time to build more prisons so as a temporary measure some ships were converted into prison hulks,

which could easily be made secure although the conditions aboard their often-rotting hulls were tough. It was during the French Wars of 1793 to 1815 that the greatest use of hulks was made to accommodate additional prisoners of war. In order to make his incarceration more bearable Garneray managed to paint and sell views of the hulks via a local art dealer. This helped improve his conditions in captivity, in the way that many other prisoners also did
by making ship models or other handicrafts. When Napoleon abdicated in 1814, the British freed their prisoners and Garneray returned to Paris, continuing to work as an artist. He later wrote three popular autobiographies recounting his adventurous double career as a sailor, corsair and artist. ÂŁ10,000-ÂŁ15,000
