21 ATTRIBUTED TO LUCA DELLA ROBBIA (ITALIAN, 1399-1482): AN IMPORTANT 15TH CENTURY TIN GLAZED EARTHENWARE RELIEF DEPICTING POPE MARTIN V the rectangular maiolica relief panel depicting a portrait of Pope Martin V in profile in white on a blue ground, facing left, dressed in cope and papal crown, his coat of arms (a column within a shield) to the upper left corner, inscribed at the base ‘MARTINVS V’, the reverse signed ‘LRO’ in blue, later mounted on a walnut panel with four fleur de lys iron brackets holding the panel in place, 46.5cm high x 33.5cm wide, the wooden mount 73.5cm high x 52cm wide Sold with a copy of a thermoluminescence analysis report dated 1/8/2018 from Arcadia Tecnologie per I Beni Culturali, Milan, stating that the sample taken indicates that the date of the object is consistent with the presumed dating of the piece, 15th century. Pope Martin V was known as Otto di Colonna (1368-1431) before his papal election, hence the column depicted in the top left corner. His greatest achievement was ending the Western Schism at the Council of Constance in 1417, and he remained Pope until his death in 1431. Luca Della Robbia was the head of a family of artists famous for the glazed terracotta technique used in the present relief. Luca invented the technique which was to revolutionise terracotta sculpture in the 16th century. The bright glaze which has survived six hundred years and is still rich in colour, meant that his sculptures and portraits were easily seen in dark interiors or chapels, and the terracotta was easier to produce than carving in marble or stone. 21 (detail) Literature: A comparable relief is illustrated in Catalogue of Gothic and Renaissance Italian and French Art, The Tolentino Collection, the American Art Galleries, April 1924, New York 1924. Here attributed to Luca della Robbia. £12,000-£18,000

40 AN ITALIAN RENAISSANCE TERRACOTTA RELIQUARY BUST, PROBABLY 16TH CENTURY the young female saint or Virgin Mary with centrally parted hair flowing down her shoulders, wearing a gown with circular aperture to reveal the relic, now filled, the interior with an old red wax seal, the exterior later painted, 37cm high The form of the present bust, modelled in the full round and cut at the shoulders was developed in the 15th century but probably derived from an ancient prototype. As well as religious and reliquary busts, portrait busts of particular patrons were produced for specific commissions, for example see the late 15th century terracotta portrait bust in the Metropolitan Museum, New York which depicts a young man, probably a member of the Medici family. Museum No. 41.100.239, which is of similar form to the present bust. Reliquary busts were also produced in carved wood such as oak and polychrome and gilt decorated, for example the reliquary bust of Saint Balbina, also in the Metropolitan Museum, which was produced in the South Netherlands ca. 1520-30. Museum No. 67.155.23 £4,000-£5,000 41 A LATE 15TH / EARLY 16TH CENTURY LOWER RHINE OR NETHERLANDISH POLYCHROME DECORATED LIMESTONE BUST OF THE VIRGIN the carved stone bust with original painted decoration (refreshed in some places), wearing a blue veil and red mantel, her eyes downcast and looking to sinister, later mounted on an ebonised plinth, 27cm high x 26cm wide The exaggerated facial features of the Madonna are reminiscent of the polychrome oak sculptures produced in the Lower Rhine in the early 16th century, with wide set, heavily lidded eyes. £3,000-£5,000 42 A RARE 13TH CENTURY GOTHIC PERIOD CARVED AND POLYCHROME STONE FIGURE OF CHRIST BLESSING the standing figure carved in the full round, an orb in his left hand, his right raised in blessing, stood on an integral shaped base, with original polychrome decoration, 37cm high £1,500-£2,000

44 43 A LARGE PAIR OF 18TH CENTURY SOUTH GERMAN / AUSTRIAN BAROQUE CARVED WOOD PUTTI circa 1730, the winged cherubs with arms gesturing, with iron loops applied to the back to hang, 86cm high (2) The Baroque notion of putti as plump baby boys was derived from ancient Roman reliefs and statues, usually lightly clad or naked and often with wings, so that pagan images of Cupid could be confused with those of angels (cherubim). They were pioneered in early Renaissance art by Donatello, and became especially useful adjuncts in sculpture, where they performed supporting, mourning, or comforting roles on and around shrines, tabernacles and tombs. Such flying cherubim became one of the favourite motifs of the Baroque in Rome, often inspired by the need to lighten the sombre mood of images of cruel martyrdoms that were so emphasised in the imagery of the Counter-Reformation. Originated there by Algardi, Bernini and Duquesnoy, they rapidly became standard features in the repertory promulgated by their followers and throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. The present pair of putti were most likely part of a large decorative scheme around an altarpiece, gesturing towards a large painting or panel. £4,000-£6,000 44 AN EARLY MEDIEVAL CARVED WOOD RELIEF PANEL DEPICTING LIONS probably a 13th / 14th century coffer panel, carved with two lions passant centred by a Maltese cross and flanked by a palm leaf either side, within a border of scrolls, 147cm wide x 44cm high £1,000-£1,500

49 AN 18TH CENTURY FRENCH LEAD MODEL OF TWO PUTTI PLAYING WITH A GOOSE the two boys wrestling with the goose, modelled in the full round and on a naturalistic integral base, 25cm high £1,500-£2,000 50 A MID 18TH CENTURY FRENCH BRONZE FIGURE OF A GIRL WITH A DOG the reclining nude youth being licked by a playful hound, on a naturalistic base over an ormolu Rococo style base cast with C scrolls and flowers, the underside with later gilt metal panel, 13cm high x 18cm wide £500-£800 51 A LATE 17TH / EARLY 18TH CENTURY GERMAN GILT BRONZE FIGURE OF FORTUNA the nude figure in mid step, her left leg raised and balanced on the toes of her right, her arms raised and supporting her flowing drapery, raised on an ebonised, stepped plinth base, the figure 30cm high, 35cm high overall The distinctive facial features of the dancing Fortuna represent an ideal of beauty very different to ours, her round face and double chin, overly large, wide nose and heavily lidded eyes further defined by the lower eye lids as well as the upper give her an appeal far from the classical ideal. Her eyebrow hairs have been individually tooled and her hair swept back. Her physique is strong and stocky with her small breasts very close together, the nipples well cast over the delineated rib cage. The drapery has been finely tooled in places to suggest different textures and a pattern throughout, cast separately it is screwed on to the back of her left arm and the side of her left thigh, with a further separately cast part attached just below her bottom. A supporting bronze bracket has been applied to the base and screwed to her back. These physical features show the influence of the important German sculptor Leonard Kern. £2,000-£3,000

52 A PAIR OF 17TH / EARLY 18TH CENTURY BRONZE GROUPS DEPICTING LION ATTACKING A BULL AND LION ATTACKING A HORSE AFTER GIAMBOLOGNA (ITALIAN, 1529-1608) the dramatic groups with dark brown patination and finely delineated fur, the Lion and Horse inscribed: 18652B and: 137-1 to the underside, and each base incised: CC51 to the underside, one with remnants of a label, raised on gilt bronze mounted solid portor marble plinths, the bronzes: 20cm x 27cm and 21.5cm x 25cm, the plinths each 10.5cm high x 27cm x 26cm (2) The finely delineated hair and fur apparent in the present pair of bronzes, worked into the surface with minute incisions indicate a 17th century date of manufacture and are also visible in the casts of the sculptor Francesco Fanelli. Giambologna derived the Lion Attacking a Horse from an ancient Greek
fragment (now in the Palazzo dei Conservatori, Rome); and produced Lion Attacking a Bull as a pendant bronze. Both are typically high Baroque in their dramatic depiction of a life and death struggle between the lion and the domesticated beast, in each example the lion’s claws tearing at the delicate flesh as the contorted body of the animal wrestles to survive. Typical of Giambologna’s compositions, the bronzes are small scale and designed to be viewed from multiple angles rather than a single frontal plane. Examples cast by Antonio Susini (Italian, 1558-1624) are in the J. Paul Getty Museum (Inv. no. 94.SB.11.1) and comparable examples are recorded in the following museums: Bargello Florence Frick Collection, New York Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna Louvre Museum, Paris Similar models were in the 1978 Arts Council Giambologna exhibition at the V&A Museum, London. £12,000-£18,000 17
