Basket-weave engine turned decoration throughout, with an literary inscription to one side “Sublime tobacco! which, from east to west, Cheers the Tar’s labor or the Turkman’s rest; Which on the Moslem’s ottoman divides, His hours, and rivals opium and his brides; Magnificent in Stamboul, but less grand, Though not less loved, in Wapping or the Strand; Divine in hookahs, glorious in a pipe, When tipped with amber, mellow, rich and ripe; Like other charmers, wooing the caress More dazzlingly when daring in full dress; Yet they true lovers more admire, by far, Thy naked beauties – Give me a cigar!”. The initials and coronet are attributed to Henry Hyde, 4th Earl of Clarendon and 2nd Earl of Rochester (1672-1753). Although these titles became extinct in 1753, the Baroncy of Hyde and Earldom of Clarendon was revived in 1756/76 respectively for Thomas Villiers married to Charlotte Capel, granddaughter of Henry Hyde. The 1847 extension of this service likely being commissioned by the Hyde-Villiers family as Earl’s of Clarendon (second creation) where the original mid-18th century French service descended through the female line. Thereafter by descent.

398 An early George III antique sterling silver pair of candlesticks, London 1760 by John Hyatt & Charles Semore With stepped and gadrooned square form bases, the column with spirally fluted junction and gadrooned knops. The capitals partmarked with lion passant and makers mark for John Hyatt (Grimwade 1369), each with removable square shape sconces, both bearing a lion passant and one with the same maker’s mark. Engraved to the central knop with a crest of a lion rampant regardant holding between the paws a fleur-de-lis, remnants of the same crest to the sconces. Hollow cast, each fully marked to the inside base. (2) Height – 25.2 cm / 9.9 inches Weight – 1214 grams / 39.03 ozt £800-1200 The crest is that of Pryse of Gogerddan, Cardiganshire, Wales for John Pugh Pryse (d.1771) who was MP for Cardiganshire in 1761 and for Merionethshire. The I*H mark has previously been tentatively attributed to John Horsley, however the presence of this mark on this pair of candlesticks and its sconce demonstrates that this mark is definitely actually that of John Hyatt as separate from his short-lived partnership with Charles Semore, which given extant examples appears to have disbanded in 1760. This mark would have been in the lost large workers register of 1758-1773 and its presence on the main candlestick as well as the partnership mark can be explained by the modular construction of cast candlesticks within one workshop.

Sir Moses Montefiore was an important Italian and British Sephardic Jew, whose efforts in financing and philanthropy are seen as pivotal to the development of Proto-Zionism. 44
