In 1953, he was tasked by the firm to transform the backroom with an entrance on to Albemarle Street into a ‘boutique’. The idea behind the boutique was to attract a new type of clientele with more affordable pieces of jewellery and a range of leather goods and accessories. Mr Vanson also served his community for over thirty-five years as a Labour Councillor for Elmbridge. When asked at various stages in his life how he could be a left-winger in politics and work in the world of jewellery, he maintained ‘I considered myself a very good jeweller whereas I would have been a very poor miner or steel worker. Fate had decided what I should become. The raison d’etre of my work at Cartier was to create beautiful items to be sold for export most of the time, therefore bringing money into the national ‘kitty’ and giving work to hundreds of creative people. There was nothing anti-social in that.’ 42 A ruby and diamond three-stone ring, by Pravins The oval-cut ruby, between brilliant-cut diamonds, all in four-claw settings, to an 18 carat gold band, signed Pravins, partial UK hallmark, ring size L, maker’s case and box £500-£700 9

He primarily produced nature studies and landscapes, with some of his larger pieces now in the collection of the National Museum of Art, Copenhagen. In 1904, he began to work in a freelance capacity for Georg Jensen, producing his most iconic design of the dove within a wreath shortly thereafter. His work is characterised by a rich Art Nouveau aesthetic, combining naturalistic motifs.

The design was produced in great numbers and was worn by Danes to demonstrate their resistance to the German occupation. Malinowski was the recipient of numerous awards, including the Eckersberg medal and Carlson prize. His work is characterised by naturalistic motifs, such as animals and plants, which he combined with the pure forms of Functionalism.

The earclips appear to have been inspired by one of Georg Jensen’s earlier designs, produced from 1927 to 1931. For a pair of cufflinks of a similar design, see Jens Ingvordsen, The Jewellery Box: Danish Jewellery Art of the 20th Century, Den Gamle By Strandberg Publishing, Copenhagen, pages 126, 175. 32

It is said that one day Charles Arpels was shocked to witness Mrs Gould putting her accessories in to a Lucky Strike tin. This prompted him to invent a stylish jewel-like box, capable of holding the various objects a lady would require for an evening out. The object’s name was inspired by Estelle, the wife of Alfred Van Cleef, whose gentile mannerisms, or ‘minauderies’, widely ingratiated her.
