A RARE AND IMPORTAINT WHITE JADE ‘BUFFALO AND QILIN GROUP’ CARVING FROM A EUROPEAN COLLECTION.

The carved jade buffalo is perhaps the most iconic subject in animal carving and an important symbol of Imperial power. The buffalo is emblematic of agricultural production and the springtime, but more importantly is a symbol of strength, endurance and prosperity. James Lin argues in The Immortal Stone, 2009, p 51, that from the Ming Dynasty onwards buffaloes were often depicted at rest with their head turned at a right angle to its body, as seen in this carving, to indicate that the world was at peace.

To complement this, the qilin, a fabulous creature that appears only during the reign of a benevolent ruler and embodies grandeur and happiness, long life, illustrious offspring and wise administration.

Their combination is rare and is a testament to a peaceful and prosperous reign as a direct result of the heavenly mandate upon the Emperor.

Published: Ryokusho vol. 25, the special edition, Makie p 25. ÂŁ400 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 600 ĆĄÇŞĹ&#x2C6;Ă&#x2021;ǞǚžƊ Shibata Zeshin (1807 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 1891), is regarded as one of the pioneers among Japanese lacquer artists in the 19th century, reinvented the surface decoration techniques with texture assimilating natural objects, such as bronze and stone that had traditionally been used to coat samurai sword scabbards. Zeshin and his pupils used the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;gritty coating methodâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; achieved by mixing metal or charcoal powders with lacquer, to decorate everyday objects such as inro and stationery boxes. Such work became popular amongst sophisticated townsmen during the Edo period.

Comprising five trays, five rice bowls, five soup bowls, ten mukozuke, five shoyu-ire, five hashioki, five sake cups, one sake ewer, one teapot, three further sake cups on a stand and a large sweet bowl. The trays are finely decorated with flowering vines and fruits in hiramaki-e in gold and coloured lacquer on seido-nuri ground, a kashiki with autumn flowers in hiramaki-e, two wooden storage boxes. (46) £3,000 – 4,000 èóJƦ ·ěĝĞǾǹǭƩ Umezawa Ryushin (1807 -1891), the third son of Shibata Zeshin, studied maki-e under Ikeda Taishin (1825 – 1903). The gourd is a symbol of good fortune and health. Dried and lacquered gourds are often displayed at shrines and houses in order to exorcise evil spirits.

This dinner service is likely being commissioned to entertain important guests for a tea ceremony dinner.

The clear globular body on a short circular recessed foot, rising to a lipped rim, painted to the exterior with peonies emerging from behind rockwork, 7cm H. £2,000 – 3,000 Ǭ ǘ ƐƆǒ ŰŏŭǩǦƄǟƊ Enamelled and gilt-decorated clear glass wares are extremely rare, and extant examples exhibit a high level of variation. A Qianlong mark and period circular box and cover published in Arts of the Scholar’s Studio, cat no 95, p 126, has incised floral details infilled with blue pigment and gilt. A glass washer of similar, but more compressed form and decoration, catalogued as Qianlong mark and period, is in the Cheng Xun Tang collection (Treasures of Chinese Glass Workshops, 1997, cat no 23) but has very different consistency and translucency of the coloured enamels. Another washer, of similar form, decorated with plum blossom, but on white opaque glass, and with a Gu yue xuan mark to the base is published as Luster of Autumn Water: Glass of the Qing Imperial Workshop, 2005, cat no 10.10. Other examples of clear glass pieces include those purely decorated in gilt. As such precisely categorising and dating the present piece is difficult, however, it adds to the intriguing variety within glass making.
