Jean Després (1889-1980) was born in Souvigny, France. His father owned a small jewellery shop and sent his son off to be apprenticed in Paris when he was 16. There he studied design at night and spent his free time in the artistic quarters of Monmartre, where he met Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso and Amedeo Modigliani amongst others. During World War I he became a draughtsman for the French Air Force, which was also to later influence his modernistic designs. After the war, Després took over the running of the family business, which was to mark the beginning of his design career. Innovative with his use of materials, inspired by his artist friends in Paris, he embraced the dramatic contrasts of silver, enamel and semiprecious stones exhibiting at the 1925 Exposition Internationale in Paris. His work was well received and was collected by many important writers and artists including, Anatole France, Paul Signac and Andy Warhol. Literature: Gabardi, Melissa, “Jean Després; Jeweler, Maker, and Designer of the Machine Age”, Thames & Hudson, New York, 2009.

Literature: A version of this necklace is illustrated in Cailles, Francoise, “René Boivin Jeweller”, Quartet Books, London, 1994, page 48. This necklace had been verbally authenticated from images by Francoise Cailles, April 2018. René Boivin (1864-1917) established one of the most original and respected jewellery houses of the 20th century. Boivin was considered “the jeweller of the intelligentsia”. He was particularly drawn to naturalistic themes, including flowers and animals. He also had a preference for using unusual materials and semi-precious stones such as wood and moonstones. “For his more daring clients, he would design bold, unconventional models that prefigured future trends.” (Cailles, page 29.) Around the year 1910 Boivin developed an interest in the Iron Age, Mesopotamian, Assyrian and Japanese themes in his jewellery. The collections met with mixed reception and some of the more unusual pieces are now highly prized as collectors’ pieces. Following Boivin’s premature death in 1917, his wife took the unusual move to continue the company. Her strong design Image courtesy of ethic was complemented by her assistants, Francoise Cailles and including Suzanne Belperron, and brought Quartet Books the house global acclaim. 259 A collection of jewellery boxes (18) £80-£120 *See inside front cover for information regarding fees
