67 67 THOMAS HARTLEY CROMEK (BRITISH 1809-1873) and other 19th Century hands An album of 52 watercolours and sketches belonging to Edward Law Durand An album of 52 drawings and watercolours by various hands compiled by Edward Law Durand (1st Barnonet 1845-1920). Including: three signed views by Thomas Hartley Cromek (1809-1873) depicting Rome, Athens, and Mycenae; three signed sketches by Arthur John Strutt (1819-1888); four sketches of New Zealand dated 1847-8 and other subjects including: views of Haddon Hall, Chatsworth and Hardwick Hall; Dresden, Avignon, Corfu. The earliest dated sheet is 1807 but the majority of the works appear to date around the 1840’s. Most of the unsigned works are inscribed in English. Album size 37.5 x 27.5cm (14 3/4 x 10 3/4in.) (52) The album appears to have belonged to Sir Edward Law Durand (1845-1920). He was one of three sons of Sir Henry Marion Durand (1812-1871), who had served with distinction in the First Afghan War and the Indian Mutiny. Edward was educated in Bath, Repton and Guildford. He entered the 96th Regiment of Foot in 1865 but transferred to the Indian Political Service in 1868 and in 1870 was selected as ADC and Private Secretary to the Lieutenant-Governor of the

Punjab. From 1871-77 he filled various posts in Rajputana and Central India, before briefly serving as Acting Political Agent in Manipur in 1877. In 1878 he was appointed Acting Assistant Resident in Bushire. During this posting Captain Durand was sent by the Resident in Bushire, Colonel E.C. Ross (q.v.), to survey Bahrain. It was on this occasion that he became the first European writer to comment on the Bronze Age burial-mounds there, and had the fortune to discover a cuneiform inscription which he brought back to his family home in Scotland but which was later moved to London where it is believed to have been destroyed during the Blitz. Durand’s report on the island was forwarded by Ross to A.C. Lyall, then Secretary of the Government of India’s Foreign Department, and was later published in 1880 in the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society (New Series) vol. XII (Part II), pp. 189-227, where it was entitled Extracts from Report on the Islands and Antiquities of Bahrain. In 1881 Durand was placed in charge of the former Amir of Kabul and from 1884-86 he was Assistant Commissioner for the Afghan Boundary Commission. In 1888 he was appointed Resident in Nepal , where he served from 1889 until his retirement in 1893. He was author of Cyrus the Great King (verse; London 1906), and Rifle, Rod, and Spear in the East (London 1911). He died in London in 1920. £1,200-£1,800

André Mare participated in the Camouflage unit during the First World War, applying Cubist theory to create trompe-l’oeil effects when disguising weapons and military materials from the Germans. He worked on the Somme Offensive of 1916, and assisted the Italians camoufleurs in 1917. Mare’s training in camouflage is evident in his cubist watercolours, with many reflecting his war experiences. A pioneering figure of the Art Deco movement, during the 1912 Salon d’Automne he Exhibited his controversial Maison Cubist alongside sculptor Raymond Duchamp-Villon and other artists. Mare later joined forces with Louis Süe and established a design practise specialising in Art Deco furniture and interiors. He died in 1932 of tuberculosis caused by being subject to multiple mustard gas attacks during the war. In 1797 he moved to Dublin and married Marianne Vigne. There he enjoyed some success as a portrait painter, his sitters including many of those involved in Irish politics. On the Union of England with Ireland in 1801, his clientele virtually disappeared, and he returned to England, briefly, before setting off to India, to Madras, where his second brother, John was in business. Arturo Uriarte y Piñeiro

Leopoldo Uriarte y Piñeiro

Originally from the Basque country, the brothers, physicians and collectors Arturo and Leopoldo Uriarte y Piñeiro divided their time between Europe and South America. Leopoldo, a respected scientist, dedicated his life to research, studying in depth the bubonic plague. A professor at the University of Buenos Aires, he founded the Instituto Bacteriológico at Muñiz Hospital (now the Instituto Malbran). In acknowledgement of his outstanding contribution to research in his field a prize in his name was established that is still awarded to this day by the National Academy of Medecine. As well as art he was a great bibliophile, and his library was donated by his widow to the National Library, Buenos Aires. Arturo was a clinical doctor and an outstanding surgeon. He founded the Juan Antonio Fernandez Hospital in Buenos Aires, supported a wide range of charitable causes, and on his travels in Europe acquired a wide range of art works. On the death of Leopoldo in in 1941 he donated part of his and his brother’s collection to the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Buenos Aires, where the works remained until 1991, when they were retuned to the descendants of the family.

Brook (lower right) Oil on canvas 20 x 15.5cm (8 x 6 1/4in) Provenance: Downton Gallery, New York Charlotte Kaufmann, New York (acquired from the above on 7th January 1936) Thence by descent to the present owner Alexander Brook, an American artist and critic, began painting when recovering from a serious illness as a child. He joined the New York Art Students League in 1915, and was taught primarily by Kenneth Hayes Miller during his four year studies. After leaving the League he married Margaret Frances ‘Peggy’ Bacon, a fellow artist with whom he had two children. Peggy Bacon was an American print maker, illustrator, painter and writer. She was best known for her humorous and ironic etchings and drawings and her satirical caricatures of prominent personalities in the late 1920's and 30's. She studied under Brook’s tutelage at the Art Students League. Here she met and became friends with Charlotte Kaufmann, mother of the present owner, who was also an artist. Brook painted many family portraits of Charlotte Kaufmann's family. In her diary, Kauffmann records acquiring the portrait of Peggy Bacon on 7th January 1936. At about the same time there is an entry about Alexander Brook concerning his tutelage and criticism of her painting technique.

Six works by Harald Mahrenholz (lots 260-265)

260

261

Harald Mahrenholz was from a cultured Jewish family. His maternal grandfather had been a cellist, his mother was a concert pianist, and his brother established himself as a portrait and fashion photographer. In his home city of Berlin Mahrenholz studied in the studio of the Expressionist painter Ludwig Meidner, and subsequently worked for the stage and film director Max Reinhardt. From Berlin he moved to Paris, where he came under the influence of the Fauve painter and society portraitist Kees Van Dongen, was introduced to Matisse and Picasso, and met Christian Dior. Dior, then a young co-director of the newly established Galerie Jacques Bonjean on rue de la Boétie, took up Mahrenholz’s work, exhibiting his paintings alongside others that he championed, from Leonor Fini, Salvador Dali and Joan Miró to neo-Romantics Eugène and Léonide Berman and Pavel Tchelitchew. Through Dior the painter was introduced to the Parisian intelligentsia and beau-monde amongst them Gertrude Stein and Coco Chanel. Mahrenholz moved to London in the late 1930s where he continued to paint, but also set up a haute couture salon on Curzon Street in Mayfair. His clients included Princess Margaret, Margot Fonteyn, Barbara Hutton, the Duchess of Argyll and Vivien Leigh. He was introduced to Daniel Wildenstein by fellow designers Elizabeth Arden and Coco Chanel. Wildenstein held a one-man show of Mahrenholz’s paintings at his New Bond Street gallery in 1947.

Glossary of Picture Cataloguing Terms Any Statement as to authorship, attribution, origin, date, age, provenance and condition is a statement of opinion and is not to be taken as a statement of fact. The Company reserve the right, in forming their opinion, to consult and rely upon any expert or authority considered by them to be reliable. 1.

JMW Turner: In our opinion a work by the artist. When the artist’s forename(s) is not known, a series of asterisks, followed by the surname of the artist, whether preceded by an initial or not, indicates that in our opinion the work is by the artist named.

2.

Attributed to JMW Turner: In our opinion probably a work by the artist, but less certainly as to the authorship expressed than in the preceding category.

3.

Studio of JMW Turner: In our opinion probably a work by an unknown hand in the studio of the artist, which may or may not have been executed under the artist’s direction.

4.

Circle of JMW <]ZVMZ" 1V W]Z WXQVQWV I _WZS Ja IV I[ aM\ ]VQLMV\QÅML J]\ LQ[\QVK\ PIVL KTW[MTa I[[WKQI\ML with the named artist and of the period, but not necessarily his pupil.

5.

Style of…; Follower of JMW Turner: In our opinion a work by a painter working in the artist’s style, but not necessarily his pupil.

6.

Manner of JMW Turner: In our opinion a work in the style of the artist and of a later date.

7.

After JMW Turner: In our opinion a copy (of any date) of a known work of the artist.

8.

The term ‘signed’ and/or ‘dated’ and/or ‘inscribed’ means that in our opinion the signature and/or date and/or inscription are from the hand of the artist.

9.

The term ‘with signature’ and/or ‘with date’ and/or ‘with inscription’ means that in our opinion the signature and/or date and/or inscription have been added by another hand than that of the artist.
