Dear Reader, Welcome to the March edition of The Chiswick Magazine. Working on this month’s magazine has been a great distraction from the stormy weather! Whilst many of us might have been hiding out at home to avoid the rain and wind, you won’t want to do that this month with all of the exciting things happening in and around W4. You might want to head out to this year’s 10th anniversary Camellia Show at Chiswick House, you might want to head to the cinema to see Misbehaviour, or you might want to head to the Lyric Hammersmith. You can read about all of these things and much more in this month’s magazine. As always, I really hope you enjoy the read. Áine x

The Chiswick Diary FURTHER AFIELD Not only do we have exciting events here in Chiswick but we’re close enough to Hammersmith for a trip to the Lyric not to feel like too much work...

Lyric Hammersmith presents Love, Love, Love It’s 1967. The Beatles are performing All You Need Is Love on global TV for the very first time. Kenneth and Sandra meet. Love, Love, Love charts one couple’s journey forty years from the era of free love to the beginning of the 21st Century. Smoking, drinking, affectionate and paranoid, Kenneth and Sandra build their life and family together in a time of increasing national prosperity, when the future is always better than the past. Now they’re retired and their children grown, but why hasn’t it all worked out the way they thought? What happens when the children you think you’ve done everything for, believe you haven’t done enough? A family go to war over their personal politics in Mike Bartlett’s funny and scathing look at the opposing values of two very different generations. Rachel O’Riordan directs a major revival of this award-winning play that feels more relevant than ever. Cast includes: Rachael Stirling, Nicholas Burns, Patrick Knowles, Isabella Laughland and Mike Noble. To find out more and to purchase tickets, visit: https://lyric.co.uk/shows/love-lovelove/

hree local charities have received £5,000 each from the Chiswick Book Festival and Cookbook Festival, following record ticket sales at the festivals last autumn. Fundraisers from InterAct Stroke Support, Doorstep Library Network and The Felix Project were recently presented with cheques by the director of the Chiswick Book Festival, Torin Douglas, and two of the Cookbook Festival team, Jo Pratt and Jules Kane. The presentation took place at St Michael & All Angels Church, Bedfword Park, which hosts the Festivals, and which also received a £5,000 donation. Torin Douglas, director of the Chiswick Book Festival, said: “This is a significant increase in the amount we and the Cookbook Festival have given to our charities and we’re delighted for them. It’s our first year supporting The Felix Project, who were introduced to us by the Cookbook team, and we look forward to working with them to find more volunteers and raise more funds in Chiswick.”

is a significant amount and will make such a difference to the thousands of lives we touch daily.” InterAct Stroke Support and Doorstep Library Network have both been supported by the Chiswick Book Festival for several years. Nirjay Mahindru, chief executive of InterAct Stroke Support, which employs actors to read to stroke patients in Charing Cross Hospital, said: “This is wonderful news. £5000 is the equivalent of half a year’s work at Charing Cross being fully paid for. We cannot thank you and the team enough.” Annabel James, chair of Doorstep Library Network, which brings the magic of reading into the homes of families in disadvantaged areas of London, said: “This is fantastic news and an incredibly generous donation. Thank you so so much. As you know, it will make a real difference and enable us to continue our work with children and families in west London.”

Jules Kane, of the Cookbook Festival team, said: “I’m super proud to be part of the amazing Cookbook team that helped raise £5,000 for our chosen charity The Felix Project, who do fantastic work. Thank you to all who made it possible and supported us.”

The Chiswick Book Festival is run by St Michael & All Angels Church as an important part of its outreach in the community. To mark the 140th anniversary of its building in 1879 and consecration in 1880, the church is seeking more volunteers and donations for its arts, charity and community activities throughout the year.

The Felix Project is based in west London and distributes food to charities and schools that would otherwise go to waste. Isabella White, its community and challenge events fundraiser, said: “I am honestly so chuffed by how much was raised from this event. I announced this news to the entire office and we are all so delighted! This really

For more than 50 years, St Michael’s has organised the Bedford Park Festival and Green Days weekend and it will celebrate the 140th anniversary at this year’s Festival, which runs from June 12th to 28th 2020. This year’s Chiswick Book Festival will take place from September 10th to 14th 2020.

new invitation service has been officially launched, providing a simple, time-saving way to organise children’s parties and other celebrations, encourage sustainable gift-giving and raise money for charity. Based in Chiswick and called Fundzzle www.fundzzle. com, the online platform is the brainchild of co-founder and CEO Catherine White. She says: “I was inspired by my children, who wanted to help those in need and protect the environment. The idea is for people to be able to contribute towards one great gift, a charity or both. This then avoids unwanted presents and their wrapping ending up in landfill.” The invitation platform is free and enables the party host to create and send a personalised invitation, which has a link to RSVP. Hosts can then track responses, send messages and thank you notes to guests and collect good wishes for a group card from their private dashboard.

Local Life

If the host chooses the group gift and/or charity option, which is subject to a small management fee, they can specify the group gift and select from the list of charities partnered with Fundzzle to receive money. If they want to collect for both a gift and a charity, hosts will be asked to select what percentage of the funds they want allocated to the charity. The information will be shared on the invitations and guests are given the option to contribute when they RSVP. Once all the money is collected, Fundzzle will send the payment to the host for the group gift and the charitable portion direct to the nominated charity. All funds are held in trust and ring-fenced via payment provider partner Mangopay. There are no fees for the charities. “Our ethos is all about supporting good causes while having a good time, sustainably,” Catherine adds.

The SCHOOL OF BOB

By Katie Saunders

Art, Design and creative thinking for young minds, The SCHOOL OF BOB offers fun and inspiring experiences for children aged 7-16, that revolve around the business of art, design and creativity. They are a young business born out of frustration and a passion to push the boundaries of creative education for young people.

T

hey hold special events, after school clubs and private sessions for creative individuals to come together in a fun and creative environment. The children enjoy using their imagination in their art class and they love working with and learning from a real artist. The SCHOOL OF BOB run different workshops that explore all areas of the commercial creative world, such as graphics, fashion, editorial design and so on, while being inspired by actual industry professionals. Their workshops are mostly all industry-based with a heavy emphasis on the commercial design world; real-world creative subjects and briefs are given to the children, despite their age, they are taught about the ins and outs of the creative industries, creative jobs and the actual real-world processes, and these workshops are mostly led by industry professionals They aim to drive change and champion creative education in the UK. They want to provide an authentic platform where kids are able to exercise their creative muscles and improve their mental and social capabilities. Ultimately the SCHOOL OF BOB wants to be the catalyst that channels children towards a more positive and creative future, giving them the confidence they need to become their best selves. The SCHOOL OF BOB exists because the main thrust of their mission

stems from their belief that with automation and AI, the future job market will rely very much on the creative brains out there; the ones who can think laterally, who can problem-solve and weave bold new solutions. This creates positivity for the future and for the UK economy. They were at several events last year including Port Eliot Festival in Cornwall and at Sissinghurst Castle in Kent. They run from The Fashion School in Chelsea. They held two workshops in Chiswick last month. At the Chiswick Town Hall during half term, on Monday 17th February, the kids learnt from SCOOP Magazine about the process of magazine design, including typography, layout, imagery and illustration and on Friday 21st February they learnt about editorial, but from the illustrators perspective. In this photo story we wanted to show the works of the children and how great the effects of joining a place like the SCHOOL OF BOB can be for your child's development and fun, we love the art the kids have produced and hope they carry on making more. We're showing pictures from different classes, including sneaker design, oil painting, working from well known artists and sketch books. We hope you enjoy them as much as we have. We're so pleased they brought their creativity and inspiration to Chiswick and we support the cause for more art in education.

Marcus Wareing to host PITP Chiswick By Áine McGinty

ust in case you missed last year’s event at Chiswick House and Gardens - which I’m sure you would have regretted after a quick look at your Instagra feed I’ll give you a little lowdown. Brought to us by celebrity chef Tom Kerridge, Pub in the Park involves a wealth of famous chefs, tasty dishes and excellent live music. It’s a mix of supporting local talent as well as presenting some of the biggest names in food and music. The line-ups for all eight venues have started being announced and the one and only Marcus Wareing will be hosting the 2020 Chiswick event. This will be his first time in Chiswick and first time going to a Pub in the Park event. We spoke to Marcus after the announcement and his excitement, even through the phone, was contagious. As Marcus is quick to note: ‘‘Pub in the Park sums up what pubs are all about - music, food and entertainment.’’ He adds that he believes it works because Tom has great friends in the industry and is pulling everyone together. Some of the finest chefs in the business will once again be coming to Chiswick, they will be taking part in cooking demos, book signings, Q&As and more. ‘‘I’m really looking forward to seeing what everyone will be cooking,’’ Marcus says and you should be too. One of

Main Feature

the chefs will be Chantelle Nicholson, the multi-award winning Chef Patron at Tredwells and Group Operations Director for Marcus Wareing Restaurants. Other names include young talent Tom Brown and Chris King. There are more on the list and even more to be announced! Marcus doesn’t often get the chance to attend events like this, balancing a busy work schedule with family life. Luckily for W4 residents, this year’s event takes place from the 4th-6th September, when the summer holidays are over and when Marcus will be finished filming MasterChef: The Professionals. His mission for his first Pub in the Park is clear. ‘‘Let’s make it the best pub in the park of the series. Chiswick will be rocking!’’ he says. If the acts announced so far are anything to go by, Chiswick certainly will be rocking. So far, Chiswick’s music includes Basement Jaxx (DJ Set), The Feeling, The Kaiser Chiefs, Marc Almond (also from Marcus’s hometown of Southport) and Reef. A number of pubs from last year’s event will be returning this year and there are four new pubs for 2020! These are Atul Kochhar’s Vaasu, Cornerstone, Sabor and Tredwells. I’m starting to feel hungry just writing this!

Meet The Artist

Amelia Lucy Wood By Katie Saunders

and worked there for 5 years! When she came back to London she knew she just wanted to paint and she put all of her focus and energy into painting. To start with, she bought basic canvases and bog standard paints and started putting brush to paint and paint to paper. What’s so amazing about Amelia’s talent is that there is no planned picture or idea of what she wants the final piece to look like, instead the enjoyment and creativity comes from moving the colours around and seeing what happens through a creative process.

O

n the usual hunt for talented artists, I saw Amelia Lucy Wood’s work after she submitted a piece for the W4th Plinth. I clicked on her Instagram handle @amelialucywood via @abundancelondon (who organise the W4th Plinth) and I saw more of her art and loved it. Her style and use of colours is pleasantly engaging and pleasing to the eye, so I got in touch and arranged a meet-up at a halfway point in a coffee shop in Teddington, to catch up on how it all started. Amelia has a natural talent and began painting properly when she was 30, which seems late to some and even her closest friends didn’t know she had this artistic side to her. The change of direction happened when she came back to London after a break up. Before the move she was living in Oxford and working for a wonderful mental health organisation, for anyone struggling with mental health issues to call in and speak to someone. Amelia was the someone to listen and give support, she loved that job

Graduating from the University College of Creative Arts in 2007, her background is in graphic design but she knew that wasn’t the path she wanted to go down. Amelia also completed a foundation in art and design at Kingston School of Art and Design and getting into painting was a new lease of life for her. Her father was a creative and a photographer in the 80s and 90s. When she spoke to him about what she wanted to do next, he was very supportive of her. Amelia’s paintings were seen by friends, family and other people and her work was well liked. The ‘stuff of dreams’ happened after a year, when Millie, an artist representative from a gallery in Battersea, London, found out about her and became her agent. It was a real big boost, as you can imagine and Amelia’s work was also shown at the Affordable Art Fair several times in London and in New York, and at the ALWOOD Summer Show, where her paintings sold well. Things slowed down a little after a few years and they decided to part ways as agent and artist. Amelia continues to paint and her next exhibition is at Redlees Park in Isleworth this year. They exhibit twice a year, in winter and summer. Amelia has exhibited there the last two years and we’re looking forward to seeing her work on display there at the Summer Open Studios in May. Amelia is having a solo exhibition in October this year also at Redlees Studio!

Campaign to install Yeats artwork in Chiswick’s cultural quarter By Áine McGinty

A group of local residents have launched a project to install an artwork at the gateway to Bedford Park in celebration of Irish NobelPrize-winning poet William Butler Yeats and his London connections. Trustee, Hon.Secretary, poet and musician Cahal Dallat chats to The Chiswick Magazine about the project.

WB Yeats

Yeats's Home

any people know that Yeats was born in Dublin in 1865 and that a young Yeats developed his love of Irish landscape and lore and legends whilst staying with family in Sligo, in the West of Ireland. So why an artwork in W4? John Butler Yeats, William’s father, moved the family to London when he was just two and it was in Chiswick where he did most of his growing up. ‘‘It was in Bedford Park’s utopian artists’-colony, and by the river at Chiswick, and in the homes of local artists, authors, arts-&-crafts enthusiasts, actors and anarchists, that he found the ideas, inspiration and encouragement to become an internationally outstanding poet and dramatist,’’ Cahal tells me.

grants, pledges and donations from organisations such as The Embassy of Ireland and the Royal Academy of Arts as well as local individuals have taken the group to just under half of their £130,000 target. However, they need to raise a great deal more by the end of April.

M

Cahal has lectured all over Britain, Ireland and the US on the importance of Bedford Park and its community in Yeats’s artistic development as well as leading literary walks that explain Yeats’s Bedford Park and Chiswick. Often those attending question why there isn’t a significant marker in Bedford Park. ‘‘It’s about giving all those international poets and academics a place of pilgrimage that says ‘this place – as much as the sublime landscape of the West of Ireland – created great poetry: come and visit Chiswick!’’’ he adds. The project isn’t a new idea, they’ve been sounding local opinion for several years with support from many local residents who have been full of ideas. At the moment

‘‘We’re asking everyone who can to donate as much – or as little – as they feel they can, to show their support for art, poetry, history, local heritage, community and to support Bedford Park, Chiswick’s cultural quarter, as a creative, imaginative, go-to place,’’ says Cahal. Those behind the project will be circulating news of their planning approval application in the next few months which will be the first chance for local people to see how an artist will capture the idea of Yeats’s artistic genius being inspired by the unique atmosphere and ambience of Bedford Park. Importantly, no trees will be removed as part of the project, as Cahal states, the very reason for artists such as John Butler Yeats bringing their families up in leafy, tree-lined Bedford Park were the same reasons residents value today. If you’d like to keep in the loop with the project, make sure you check out their website, email them, join the mailing-list or even join the 750 other people following their Twitter page. You can also donate to the project online.

Chiswick’s Rebecca Frayn talks Misbehaviour By Áine McGinty

Chiswick resident and critically acclaimed novelist, screen-writer and director Rebecca Frayn chats to The Chiswick Magazine about her screenplay Misbehaviour ahead of its cinema release.

R

ebecca came to Chiswick in 1993 with her husband and their then twin boys of seven months. They were in search of a garden big enough to hold a trampoline so they could safely discharge their extraordinary energy levels! Luckily, Chiswick being renowned for its rich cultural heritage seems to fit Rebecca’s career nicely. ‘‘Chiswick is full of creative people; artists, writers and directors. I think its proximity to the river and beautiful green spaces makes it a lovely place to stroll and day dream new projects into life,’’ Rebecca tells me. In fact, the screenplay for Misbehaviour was written here in W4. ‘‘I wrote all of Misbehaviour in Chiswick. My study looks out over Turnham Green and since I am chair of a Friends group that look after it, that visual connection is very important to me,’’ she adds. The film tells the story of a monumental moment in feminist history, when a group of women teamed up to disrupt the 1970 Miss World show in London. The women were protesting against the way the contestants, on the then highest rated show in the world, were being treated like cattle. Misbehaviour is a film that has long been in the making, it has been a passion project for Rebecca and the film’s producer Suzanne Mackie since 2011. ‘‘For nine long years we have kept the flame burning through many many drafts and many many setbacks,’’ she says. It took some time to find someone who was willing to back the idea but finally, Rebecca wrote a draft that Pathe bought and the director Philippa Lowthrope signed up for. ‘‘Amazingly, only a few months later in 2017, the thunder clap of the Women’s Marches and Me Too took

the world by storm and our marginal story was suddenly - miraculously - very much part of the zeitgeist.’’ Both Rebecca and Suzanne, in different parts of London, happened to hear the same documentary on Radio 4 and became excited by its possibilities as a feature film. Rebecca writes novels and television drama too but knew film was the place for this story. ‘‘It had such scale and spectacle I couldn’t think of a better place to pose that question than in a feature film,’’ she says. Rebecca has always been passionate about telling stories about women and it was the fact that she witnessed this period, at just 8-years-old, that made her want to tell the story. Misbehaviour stars some huge names including Keira Knightley, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Jessie Buckley, Keeley Hawes, Phyllis Logan, Lesley Manville, Rhys Ifans and Greg Kinnear. Importantly, the film was made by an all female team, something which Rebecca is clearly pleased about. ‘‘Only 7% of film directors are women. The male gaze still rules. It’s time for our perspectives to be represented and our technical skill sets realised,’’ she says. The film is set to make its mark, showing at 500 cinemas worldwide, Pathe are backing it to the hilt and Rebecca says that anyone who wants to laugh and to cry should head to the cinema to see it. ‘‘Not only will it handsomely entertain you but it will make you reflect on issues of diversity - both in terms of gender and race. I’ve yet to meet anyone who hasn’t come out in floods of tears!’’ Misbehaviour is in cinemas from 15th March 2020. You can keep up to date with Rebecca’s work on her website: www.rebeccafrayn.com

It’s spurred us on to seek and develop more entertainment projects - alongside the ones we currently have in development,’’ says Adam Rae, Co-Founder of Tatata Studios. ‘‘It is also very reassuring to know that our work has been so well received; it’s a terrific sign that we are headed in the right direction,’’ he adds. The film itself was actually a project Tatata Studios embarked on at its very beginning - with initial meetings and brainstorms taking place around the kitchen table. The Devil’s Harmony walks a fun and fine balance between thriller, comedy and musical, Adam tells me. It tells the story of a bullied teenage girl who leads an a capella club on a trail of destruction against her high school enemies. ‘‘It’s Glee meets Carrie, which in itself was a very exciting proposition to us,’’ Adam explains. Based in the Barley Mow Centre in Chiswick, the integrated creative agency was founded by Adam and Nathan Craig in spring 2017. They chose Chiswick as their base after Adam fell in love with the area a number of years ago. Coming out of Turnham Green station to see the

Arts & Culture

terrace with all of its shops, lights and charm, inspired Adam to move there. Then, when it came to setting up a business, it made sense to base it in the same place. With both founders growing up in the countryside (Devon and Shrewsbury), it will come as no surprise to other local residents that they agreed that Chiswick felt the most countryside of all the London areas. ‘‘I think that wherever you feel most comfortable and at home is a good location. Chiswick has great transport links and is a wonderful place to be; connections to clients in the city and the business park alike are easy to get to - so location is no issue at all. I think that anywhere you work is what you make of it, and Chiswick certainly gives us a lot to work with.’’ Both founders combine their different experience to offer a well-rounded service including advertising, media buying, media placement and social media offerings. They’ve made social media films for IKEA, Krispy Kreme, Greenpeace, Bose, Nestle and many more, and TV commercials for clients including Vanish. The trailer for The Devil’s Harmony is available to watch online although where and when audiences can watch the film in full is yet to be determined. R

achel Staggs Aesthetics is located inside Roko Health Club, just off Hartington Road in Chiswick, W4. Rachel’s previous medi spa was in Richmond, called The Balcony, behind the Richmond Hill Hotel, meaning she’s been running her business in the area for 20 years now. Roko is the perfect location with its great inside space; creating that tranquil spa atmosphere. There are added extras outside too, having an on site car park with free parking for clients and for those on public transport it’s easily reached via the 190 bus to Hartington Road or a train to Chiswick station and just a 5 minute walk from there. Rachel and her team are friendly and very welcoming. I visited to have the WOW Facial for the first time. I was excited to experience the light therapy mask and to see what the stages of the facial would feel like, and most importantly I was looking forward to seeing the results. I was very lucky to have Rachel do my treatment, throughout she was confident and knowledgeable about the treatment, the products, the aftercare I should follow and the benefits of having this facial. The WOW facial is the kind of treatment that you’ll only really need 3 times a year, because of the nature of the peels and the depth they work to within the skin, you wouldn’t want or need to do regular sessions or you may overstimulate the skin. The beauty of this facial (no pun intended), is how it can be modified to work on all skin types. The WOW facial is a 6 stage treatment which achieves the ultimate in luxurious skin quality, texture and luminosity. The facial takes over an hour and results are achieved instantly but improve over the

Beauty

following 6 weeks. It is a hyper personalised protocol so you can be assured you are getting the best treatment for your skin type and this translates into real long lasting results. The facial begins with two cleanses to prepare your skin for the peels in the next stages. The peel in this facial is gentle, sometimes you experience tingling but I didn’t with this one. My WOW fusion device was personalised with vitamin C to increase radiance and a clearer complexion, by working on the congestion on my forehead and also the little open pores on my cheeks. The tiny needles in the micro-needling are 0.6mm, this allows the product to get deep enough for beneficial but not damaging effects. It was slightly uncomfortable and a little sore for a couple of minutes, but the light therapy mask went on and it calmed it down; light therapy is known for its anti-inflammatory effect. The face mask was applied afterwards and had a cooling and soothing effect that brought the redness down to basically nothing, it also had collagen to treat and boost the skin. Whilst the mask was on Rachel gave me a relaxing shoulder and neck massage which finished the treatment really nicely. The most important thing to remember after the facial is not to go into the sun or heated areas like the sauna, steam room or sunbeds to allow time for your skin to recover, and wear SPF everyday, even on cloudy days. I absolutely loved the WOW Facial and the results were visible just an hour afterwards; my skin was radiant, smoother and less dehydrated. Rachel Staggs offers many more treatments including massage, waxing and laser hair removal in a lovely environment.

Craniosacral Therapy

with Eloise Wall

By Katie Saunders

Wonderful woman and craniosacral therapist Eloise Wall invited me to join her for a taster session at her therapy room in the Bedford Park Pharmacy, just a few strides from Turnham Green station.

A

mutual friend of ours put us in touch so we could arrange this meet-up. Having had cranial osteopathy before I was really interested to experience craniosacral therapy and understand what it’s all about and get to know Eloise and how she became a therapist.

She treats all types of issues - physical, deeply emotional, mind and spirit. Her patients are of all ages and have been to her with sports injuries, backache or they come regularly over a long period as a form of self-care with the health benefits they get from the treatment.

Eloise’s introduction into craniosacral therapy is an inspiring story, to hear her say that three years ago she had no understanding of the transformative power of healing energy (used in many holistic therapies) and thought much of it as woo woo, was hard for me to believe because she is a natural at it. Sadly her middle sister became unwell with breast cancer several years ago. It was at that time Eloise wanted to do everything possible to make her better, which included prayer, asking a friend who is a healer to help, and learning all there was to know about the treatment her sister would receive at the Royal Marsden.

Craniosacral therapy is a gentle but powerful way of working with the body using light touch and it supports the body’s innate ability to find balance, restoring itself and healing. Eloise allows and holds the space for the treatment to take place and she tells me that she always looks for the health in the system, rather than giving attention to the symptom. Or, always looks for the health rather than for the problem.

“It’s amazing how faith driven you become when you need something badly. I was trying to find ways to cope,” Elaine says. Thankfully with the combination of treatments and their determination her sister recovered, infact Eloise tells me her aggressive tumour had disappeared after a month! The healing therapies were incredibly beneficial in her recovery, and she continues with them as part of her selfcare plan. This whole experience brought Eloise to working with healing therapies. Her original plan was to work with the NHS and offer her skills to the masses but, like many therapies that offer an energetic approach, the system does not allow for people like Eloise.

My experience of having a treatment with Eloise was really positive. When I got there I had been over-thinking that morning with numerous things on my mind. A few minutes into the treatment Eloise asked me to connect to myself and my thoughts quietened and I began to feel deeply relaxed. I felt more space to breathe and the tightness in my chest from anxieties softened. Towards the end, Eloise performed very slight movements around my head and neck area which was incredibly therapeutic. I was relaxing on a deeper level. In the end, Eloise shared a few things with me that she picked up on during the treatment, which was really interesting and very insightful.

“It’s ironic really that I feel like I’ve gone over to the other side. I rise above comments like ‘quackery’, because I have now experienced real results and know that what I offer is important and relevant. In the future it’s my belief that energy healing will be a mainstream treatment,” she says.

Eloise currently lives in Chiswick with her partner. She’s also a painter and runs meditative painting workshops within retreats in Cornwall. She is teaming up with her youngest sister this year and they have planned three transformative retreats in the Lizard, Cornwall. Using nature as a theme to aid healing, relaxation and joy they have devised a programme for people at a crossroads in life to aid in quieting the mind, seeking clarity and for living to potential. See their website inspiredbynatureretreats. com for more information or follow them on Facebook @ inspiredbynature.retreats.

Eloise is part of the Craniosacral Therapy Association and has been at the Bedford Park Pharmacy for a year and a half.

Matters of the heart Learning more about cardiac care

Dr Afzal Sohaib, Consultant Cardiologist at The Harley Street Clinic and Chiswick Medical Centre

A

s you may imagine, my patients visit with all manner of heart-related problems; more often than not after experiencing one or more of the below symptoms:

• • • • • •

Blackouts Chest pain Dizziness Fatigue Palpitations Shortness of breath

There are however some conditions which affect the heart that produce no obvious symptoms; including high blood pressure, raised cholesterol, and irregular heart rhythms such as atrial fibrillation. Keeping pace with your heart I attained my cardiology certification in 2017 with a special interest in heart rhythm problems, common symptoms of which include blackouts and palpitations (a rapidly increased and pounding heartbeat). Both of these symptoms can be distressing for an individual, and often occur out of the blue. The good news is that whilst undoubtedly worrisome, in many cases they are harmless. Heart rhythm problems affect all age groups. For example, the two most common conditions I see in younger people are: • Ectopic beats where due to “extra heart beats” you might notice your heart skipping a beat. This is usually harmless and rarely requires treatment. • Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) where the heart starts beating in a very fast and regular manner, due to extra electrical connections inside the heart. This can often be managed by adhering to your doctor’s advice, medication, and sometimes a procedure called “ablation”.

36

March 2020 | THE CHISWICK MAGAZINE

As a qualified doctor since 2005, I began practising at Chiswick Medical Centre a little over six months ago, and as someone who also lives locally it’s been my great pleasure to get to know more people in the community. Atrial fibrillation The most common sustained heart arrhythmia I see in my older patients is atrial fibrillation (AF). It is usually picked up when a chaotic irregular pulse is found. It occurs when the atria (the heart’s two upper chambers) produce out-ofcontrol electrical signals. This leads to a heartbeat far higher than the ‘normal’ heart rate of between 60 to 100 beats per minute. Approximately 1 in 10 people over 80 years old have atrial fibrillation . It is often associated with other pre-existing conditions such as: • • • • • • •

Abnormal heart valves Heart disease and/or failure High alcohol intake High blood pressure Lung disease Obesity Sleep apnoea

If you are over 65 or have other medical conditions, AF can increase your risk of having a stroke. If you feel you are at risk it’s essential that you seek medical attention, to ensure you are prescribed the correct medication. Specialist care and treatment At Chiswick Medical Centre, we offer the full range of state-of-the-art cardiac diagnostic tests. The most likely of these will be an electrocardiogram (ECG) - a quick and painless test where sensors are attached to your chest with stickers to record the electrical activity in your heart. You may also be asked to wear a Holter monitor to help provide a more accurate reading of your heart over an extended period of time.

THE CHISWICK MAGAZINE | chiswickmagazine.co.uk

If you require advanced treatments for any heart rhythm problems we can seamlessly refer you to renowned HCA UK hospital The Harley Street Clinic, for specialist procedures including: • Cardiac ablation; used to burn away areas of the heart muscle causing arrhythmias and palpitations, including abnormal circuits inside the heart. In many cases this offers a complete cure for the problem. • Pacemakers; small electrical devices implanted just below the collarbone, which help to regulate your heartbeat if it is too slow. If you have heart failure they can also improve the overall pumping of your heart. The key factors in looking after yourself Staying as fit and healthy as possible is something we should all try our best to aspire to. Of course, this means different things for different people, and dependent on our life situations and general health you may be limited in just how active you can be. When it comes to good heart health, I can’t emphasise enough how maintaining a healthy approach to diet and exercise can have such a positive effect on your wellbeing. Rather than targeting Olympic-level fitness, I recommend assessing and improving areas of your everyday life you feel are detrimental to your overall health. This may include: • A healthier diet; including eating your ‘five a day’ fruit and vegetables • Cutting down or stopping smoking • Following a regular exercise routine • Reducing alcohol intake All of the above are proven to have positive benefits for health concerns such as high blood pressure, obesity or general weight problems and stress. Enacting these lifestyle changes are not always easy of course, and from personal experience sharing the challenge with partners, family or close friends makes it far easier.

Health & Well-being

Exceptional surroundings Those of us living in or nearby to Chiswick are at a great advantage, as with all the green spaces and pleasant riverside views there are ample surroundings to enjoy whilst embracing outdoor activity. I can speak personally on this as since moving to the area I have joined Ealing Eagles, a well-established running club open to all levels (including beginners’ courses), which has been great not only for helping me to maintain fitness, but for getting to know likeminded people living and working in the local community. As well as Ealing Eagles, West 4 Harriers in Chiswick is an equally well-known and friendly running club, who run together three times a week and promote regular events anybody can sign up for. However running isn’t for everyone of course, and the most important thing is to try and participate in any exercise you feel you can best manage – even making the effort to go on regular walks is a fantastic start. Healthcare for the whole family in Chiswick Above all, at Chiswick Medical Centre we pride ourselves on ensuring our patients receive the very best in specialist cardiac care at all times. Therefore, if you or any of your family members are experiencing any of the symptoms I’ve mentioned, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us. Our leading expertise across all medical specialties, combined with advanced facilities that feature the latest medical technology, are dedicated to providing you with as positive an experience as possible in your local medical centre. Also, should you ever require further treatment, as mentioned be assured we can offer a seamless referral to any one HCA UK’s renowned London hospitals. The Studio 8 Cafe and Bar By Paul Williams

It’s all happening in W6 again... Riverside Studios is back and with it is Studio 8 Cafe & Bar

T

he world of theatre, TV shows and big names in the music industry disappeared from W6 when the Riverside Studios closed its doors for extensive redevelopment in 2014. The good news is that just before Christmas 2019 it opened its doors again to provide great spaces for a TV studio, 2 stateof-the-art cinemas, a rehearsal room and an adaptable 400 seater black box studio. The foundations of this thriving art and performance centre date as far back as 1933 having originally been an iron foundry. The Sex Pistols came here to rehearse. Legendary musicians such as Prince, David Bowie and Amy Winehouse filled the place with their amazing music. Art exhibitions by David Hockney & Yoko Ono were shown here to name but a few. If any of you enjoyed settling in on a Friday evening to watch TFI Friday and more recently, Celebrity Juice, this is all where it was broadcast from.

The whole of Riverside Studios has a very relaxed and laid back feel about it. Dress as you wish, you shall not be judged. The menu is well thought out. Enough choice without bombarding you. There’s an excellent choice of Small Plates, great as pre-theatre options such as Korean fried chicken with sesame in a sweet and spicy sauce or calamari with passionfruit syrup. There are 3 fabulous main meal salad choices and just like the Small Plates and salads the Large Plates have choices of vegetarian, vegan and meat/fish dishes. The same goes for the 3 tasty Sweets they have to offer.

The Studio 8 Cafe & Bar is an ideal place to stop by for coffee, drinks, light bites, full blown lunch / dinner or pre-theatre nosh. Simple, unfussy surroundings with black walls and foil insulated ceiling, it sits open plan in the vast reception area that leads to the TV studio, theatre, cinemas and other various spaces. Studio 8 Cafe & Bar doesn’t purport to be anything fancy.

If you are now tempted to pop into Riverside Studios, there is currently a stage production of Love, Loss & Chianti starring Robert Bathurst (Cold Feet) & Rebecca Johnson. If you buy a Premium ticket this will include a glass of Chianti!

The menu is reasonably priced and the fresh ingredients are locally sourced. The drinks menu has everything you want and again it’s not a menu to muddle you. No more than 7 red and white wines to choose from plus your beers and spirits.

left at their front door before waking. Founded in 2003 by foodie entrepreneur, Jennifer Irvine, The Pure Package has earned a long list of loyal clients, including celebrities and respected industry experts. Our features writer Katie had the pleasure of trying the service out for four days in January. With thumbs up for the overall outcome. Katie’s favourite part of the luxury service was how efficient and fresh it is. The packages arrive early in the morning (or maybe even in the middle of the night) in a smart black cool bag with ice packs at the bottom and on the top to keep everything cold. The bag unzips and inside, breakfast, lunch and dinner are packed perfectly to be portable to fit in with your day. There is a menu describing everything you have each day, along with heating instructions for dinner time. The portions are great, generous and the food is flavoursome. The cottage pie with parsnip was a favourite and also the king prawns with romanesca! They looked great as well as tasting great. Food intolerances were taken into consideration and during the days, there was no bloating after meals. Definitely a 5 star service.

Mellow down in Morocco By Áine McGinty

Thanks to the Vichy Célestins Spa Hôtel Casablanca, you don’t have to fly all the way across the world to experience a luxurious wellness retreat. Perfectly located less than an hour from both of the international airports in Rabat and Casablanca, the hotel may be out of this world but it is not out of reach.

B

oasting 130 rooms and suites, this new five-star hotel in Bouznika overlooks the Atlantic Ocean in the Bahia Golf Beach, in fact no matter where you stay in the hotel you will either have a view of the sea, the magnificent 18-hole golf course or the garden. The hotel perfectly combines the Vichy method of wellness and nutrition with nods to the culture of its location. Wellness The Vichy Célestins Spa Hôtel Casablanca is the home of Morocco’s first wellness clinic, a 3,200 m2 medical spa which holds a heated seawater pool, a cardio-training studio and various treatment rooms with high tec equipment for a wealth of needs. Due to the hotel’s proximity to Rabat, Moroccon royals tend to visit the spa, so since it is fit for royalty my expectations were just a bit high. All of the therapists in Vichy Célestins Spa Hotels are Vichy-accredited - travelling to France is a requirement as well as undergoing five years of studies and wow does that show when you experience a treatment. I had the Trilogy of Signature Treatments and this blew any spa treatment I’ve ever had before out of the water. The treatment begins with a seawater hydromassage bath, the multi-jet hydromassage combines with the salts of Vichy waters, delivering deep muscle relaxation as well as

chromotherapy benefits. This is inspired by Roman thermal pools as the Romans were the first to discover the benefits of Vichy’s thermal waters. Next up is the phyto-mineral mud wrap where mud with anti-inflammatory ingredients is applied all over your body before you are wrapped in a heated blanket and your therapist leaves the room- although very warm, it’s very calming. The best is saved for last with the Vichy thermal water shower and 2 hand massage- you can also opt for the Vichy 4 hand massage, Vichy’s most famous treatment. The water shooting down on you combined with the therapist’s magic hands means this is the height of relaxation any tension you have is soon a distant memory - it’s so good that I’d almost travel to Morocco again just for the massage. After your treatments you slip your bathrobe back on and are taken to the relaxation room with the option of either Vichy Célestins mineral water or Wright’s Herbal Tea to hydrate. The wellness clinic also offers a variety of high technology treatments including bodysculptor, cryotherapy and LPG endermologie of face or body care. There is also a Bahia wellness boutique which stocks Vichy cosmetics as well as marocMaroc products and a hairdresser and nail salon, meaning you can look as good as you feel.

Dining You can’t write about a Vichy retreat or a trip to Morocco without discussing dining, if there’s one thing I’m certain about after this trip it’s that Morocco is all about the food.

visits give you the perfect opportunity to get a taste of Morocco.

Health and nutrition are at the forefront of a Vichy retreat and of course the Vichy Célestins natural mineral water plays a huge part with the chef, trained in Vichy (France), using the water in traditional and European dishes.

The city of Rabat is known for its busy but enjoyable zouks where you can pick up everything from traditional clothing to carpets, handbags, jewellery and art work. There truly are some fantastic bits, although you might have to also buy another suitcase for coming home.

Breakfast at the hotel takes place in the V restaurant which also plays host to brunch and dinner. You can have a continental breakfast including fruit and pastries or have an omelette of your choice made.

When in Rabat you must also see the Mausoleum of Mohammed V and the Hassan Tower. Whilst the Kasbah of the Udayas provides some excellent views as well as a picturesque walk.

The hotel’s Sense restaurant is a gastro-diet restaurant where the chef works with dieticians to ensure that health and flavour become one - this is actually one of the first of its kind in Morocco.

Casablanca is also a must, where you can see the Hassan II mosque, the third largest mosque in the world and quite possibly the most stunning building I have ever seen. Casablanca also has some wonderful restaurants including the Umayya restaurant where you can enjoy dinner and watch the sunset with a sea view. There is also an outside shisha area, an excellent opportunity to get to know some locals. Most importantly though, for all the foodies out there, the traditional dish, B’stilla, is a must. It is a Moroccan chicken pie which mixes both sweet and savoury, delighting the taste buds.

My visit coincided with a Dîner d'exception in which Michelin star chef Joel Cezari joined renowned chef Sébastien Bontour to cook a delicious six course meal featuring delightful French dishes. The hotel organises special nights like these often and they attract local visitors as well as hotel guests. Lunch can also be eaten at the Italian restaurant, La Bella Vista, which is located at the Beach Club. Both the salad and the pasta are to die for - healthy and delicious, what a combination. You can also dine outside with a beautiful view of the golf course. Things to do Some people could easily go to the hotel and never leave but, as mentioned, in Bouznika you are located in the middle of both Casablanca and Rabat and, if you can bear to drag yourself away from the serene hotel, excursions and cultural

Visit the zouks, visit the mosques, and try some local cuisine to really get a sense of Morocco before returning to your calm haven. How to do it Ideally located between the cities of Casablanca and Rabat, the Vichy Célestins Spa Hôtel Casablanca is located in Bouznika facing the Atlantic Ocean in the splendid Bahia Golf Beach and its luxurious garden. It is less than an hour from each of the international airports (Rabat and Casablanca), accessible by the highway.

BREXIT AND ITS IMPACT ON DIVORCE Here, Helen Pidgeon, the Principal of Helen Pidgeon Solicitors, family law specialists in Chiswick, looks at how Brexit is likely to affect Divorce for EU couples in England

FINANCIAL SETTLEMENTS UPON DIVORCE AND HOW BREXIT WILL AFFECT THIS When a breakdown of a relationship involves a spouse from an EU country there is currently often a race for the financially weaker spouse to secure the divorce and financial proceedings to take place here in England. The English courts have a reputation for being more generous than a lot of other countries towards a financially weaker party. WHAT’S THE CURRENT POSITION OF FAMILY LAW UNDER EU LAW? Since 2001 all 28 EU Member States (except Denmark) have been governed by one EU Regulation known as Brussels IIa. Provided you meet the qualifying criteria and regardless of which EU country both parties live in, the EU country in which the divorce proceedings are first started will be where the divorce and financial proceedings are conducted. This is different for applications to resolve the arrangements for the care of any child which in England & Wales requires the child or a parent of the child to be resident here. Final court orders in divorce, related financial or children proceedings (except in exceptional circumstances for children applications) made in any EU member state can be registered to be enforced in another EU member state without having to rehear and determine the application again. This process saves both time and money. HOW THIS MIGHT CHANGE UNDER BREXIT? At present if you or your spouse meet the criteria for a divorce in England then that person can issue proceedings here. If you or your spouse is an EU citizen from another country and fit the criteria to issue in that country, then it is a simple race to be the first person to issue proceedings in their respective country and gain that jurisdiction to deal with the proceedings. It is not clear what the situation will be if there is a Brexit deal as that will depend upon the terms of that deal and whether Brussels IIa still applies.

It is our understanding that if there is a “no deal Brexit” then all EU countries would be treated in the same way we currently treat other countries such as the US, Canada and Australia. It would not be a race to the first in time that automatically secures jurisdiction, but there would be a contest to decide which is the most suitable country in which to have the proceedings. In that scenario, proceedings would become more time consuming and expensive as instead of simply looking at the date and time of the issue of the proceedings, the courts would need to consider: • The closeness of the connection you will each have with each country taking into account where the majority of the assets are held. • How easy it is to enforce any orders against those assets. • The award you are likely to receive in those countries. HOW WILL ENGLISH OR EU ORDERS BE RECOGNISED AFTER BREXIT? The UK and all EU member states are still signatories to several Hague Conventions that will apply in their own right to deal with: • The recovery of children who have been abducted from their habitual place of residence. EU procedures are already based on Hague Convention rules • Child residence and contact court orders and any other dispute relating to the child’s welfare Again, it is not clear what would happen under a Brexit deal and whether we remain part of Brussel II. However if there is a “no deal” unlike now not all EU member states (France, Spain, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Lithuania, Latvia, Malta, Romania, Bulgaria, Belgium, Ireland, Croatia, Slovenia and Greece) will recognise a final certificate of divorce (Decree Absolute) made in the UK. The party who is a national of that country will have to take advice from a lawyer in that country to have it recognised there. Being signatory to a Hague Convention means you still have to make an application in the country where the order was made to be enforced in accordance with that country’s domestic laws, but the order made in the originating country, so long as it is not contrary to the enforcing country’s domestic laws, should be upheld in the enforcing country without the need for the matter to be decided again. As is already the case, when enforcing an order made under EU law, legal advice from a local lawyer in the country where enforcement is to take place will still need to be sought. Helen Pidgeon Solicitors have connections with lawyers abroad and can help to obtain that necessary local legal advice in the other country quickly. Helen Pidgeon is a solicitor, mediator and collaborative lawyer and director of Helen Pidgeon Solicitors specialising in all aspects of family law. Do contact us if you require further assistance to help you decide what is right for you and your family. This article is intended as general information about the law. If you require advice about your particular circumstances then you should seek your own independent legal advice about the approach you should take and how this will affect you.
