Are local markets threatening Hogarth’s statue? by Dia Stronach
Some local residents have begun to raise concerns that the statue of William Hogarth on Chiswick high Road could be put at risk by market activity.
S
everal stalls at Chiswick’s Antique and Vintage Market were positioned very close to the artist's statue. Whilst the positioning was in accordance with the plots allotted by Hounslow Council’s Licensing Department, some described it as ‘squeezed in’-- including Cllr John Todd. Cllr Todd was reportedly shocked by the treatment of the statue, describing it as ‘smothered’ and citing a risk of damage to delicate parts like Hogarth’s palette and paint brush.

its reputation as a place brimming with illustrious heritage.
Local historian Val Bott added: “That looks awful, very crowded and disrespectful to the statue.
“So it is really depressing to see how thoughtlessly the stallholders appear to have treated our statue of the great artist William Hogarth and his dog. So far it doesn’t look as though they have tied their tent to his paint brushes, though that would be a concern for the future as this could damage or break them. But it does remind us that these markets must be well-managed in sympathy with Chiswick and the environs of its High Road, so they can contribute to Chiswick’s reputation as a pleasant place to visit and live, and not harm it.”
“The statue project was intended to provide a landmark for the High Road and to celebrate one of Chiswick's most famous residents. It also made use of the fine Victorian railings which had been removed from a site further along the road. “The William Hogarth Trust would very unhappy indeed if the local authority had given the market the right to place stalls within the railed enclosure.”
Hounslow Council’s Licensing and Culture Departments have since Councillor Todd that the stalls would not return to this location.
Fellow Chiswick resident Tracey Logan said: “If street markets are to benefit Chiswick they must not harm

Cllr Joanna Biddolph, a Chairman of the Chiswick Area Forum, said: "As we return to the area forums, I want residents to be sure that we Chiswick councillors really do want to hear from and listen to residents, business owners and people who work in Chiswick.
Councillor Biddolph said that the sessions in October and January will have full agendas, ensuring Chiswick residents have a public platform to connect with councillors and neighbours over the issues that really matter to them.
"This hiatus was a good opportunity to re-evaluate the format, and as this is the first area forum to be held in eight months, I hope it will inspire more ideas and change for other area forums in the Borough.
Seats must be booked to manage numbers due to social distancing measures. The area forum will be held in the main hall, the largest room at Chiswick Town Hall. Masks must be worn when moving around the room and the Town Hall.

arking the start of Black History Month, and planned as an ongoing project throughout 2022, Chiswick House & Gardens are today, 1 October 2021, launching Black Chiswick through History, a community research project, funded by English Heritage, which aims to interpret and understand its collections through a wider lens.

He said: "Reflecting the cultural diversity of society through our heritage institutions is one of the great challenges of our times. It’s one that requires new ways of seeing and looking at our collections and resources to make them accessible and relatable to many who see us as irrelevant to their heritage. To discover the embarrassment of riches which lie in Chiswick House & Gardens and to assist in interpreting them through stories and different perspectives that attract new audiences has been one of the real privileges of my professional life.” Harvinder

Participation Manager at Chiswick House & Gardens added: "This is an incredibly important project that has the capacity to redefine how we understand Chiswick House and our local history. I hope the project challenges us and what we think we know, but also gives us the tools to better talk about our shared history. Having Raj Pal on board to help guide the process and working in partnership with Chiswick School and Hogarth Youth & Community Centre, to respond creatively to the research, will help us tell the stories that need be told, through a diversity of voices and perspectives.” Throughout 2022 the project team will select five ‘objects-in-focus’ from Chiswick House & Gardens to kickstart these rewritten narratives. er description of the event explains, “Cleopatra, the woman for whose love’s sake Antony is imagined to have given up the chance to rule the Roman world, has been inspiring painters, poets and (more recently) film-makers for over two millennia. It is this scenery and wildlife that Six Senses would like to preserve for future generations through sustainable operations and tourism. The island’s flora, fauna and reef have survived for millions of years without human assistance, and Six Senses Laamu adopts a ‘noninterference’ approach. Megan O’Beirne the Sustainability Manager is on hand to meet ecoconscious guests and talk them through sustainability initiatives at resort – from the Earth Lab to the organic gardens to all the wonderful marine work that that The Maldives Underwater

Initiative (which is made up of resort marine biologists and three partners, the Manta Trust, Blue Marine Foundation and the Olive Ridley Project) does for marine conservation. At the resort, the 97 sustainably-built villas are strung along the powder soft beach or hover lightly above the crystalline lagoon waters and all have that essential Maldivian ingredient – sublime tropical views. Dining is world-class, with six bars and restaurants, an ice cream studio, a wine cellar and deli. For water lovers, the world-class Yin-Yang surf break is located just offshore. Wakeboarding, diving, waterskiing and windsurfing are all also available. Snorkelling from the Chill Bar is fantastic, where playful Spinner Dolphins enjoy regular morning and evening swims in the atoll. Those looking to truly unwind can enjoy the exceptional Six Senses Spa set right on the beach, surrounded by the island’s natural vegetation. Here, highly skilled Six Senses Spa therapists and Visiting Practitioners use natural products to provide a comprehensive range of award-winning signature treatments and locally specialised holistic treatments. HOW: Scott Dunn offers seven nights at Six Senses Laamu from £3,099 per person based on two people sharing a Lagoon Water Villa on a B&B basis including flights & transfers. For more information please visit www.scottdunn.com or call 020 8682 5055.

The Chiswick Herald has Launched a News App! The Chiswick Herald app will allow you to easily access local news - ranging from politics to culture - from your phone.
We are thrilled that we can now provide our readers with an app that makes it easier than ever to access our articles.
The app is free and can now be downloaded from the app store and the google play store. On the app, readers can see the latest articles that have been published and browse through different topics including local life and council news.
The editor of The Chiswick Herald, Lucy Bacon, says, “I am very excited that our readers can now have all the local news that they need right at their fingertips.”
You can also save the news stories you enjoy so you can come back and enjoy them later. COVID-19 means that we are now an entirely digital newspaper, and this has opened exciting new opportunities for us.
“Lockdown and COVID-19 have shown us how important our local community is and that it is crucial that we all stay informed about what is happening in Chiswick. This is just another way that we can help keep Chiswick the thriving community that we all love.”
