Every Sunday: The Food Market

10th May: Dead Ringers Live at the Tabard Theatre

15th May-1st June: Harper Regan at the Tabard Theatre

A Dukes Meadows Trust initiative, The Food Market ‘‘opens every Sunday come rain or shine!’’

Special preview show before their run at the Barbican Theatre.

‘‘If you go, I don’t think you should come back’’

Step in the world of one of the most influential and critically acclaimed radio shows of the last 20 years as the legendary BBC Radio 4 programme is taken out of the studio and onto the stage.

On a startlingly bright autumn night in 2006, Harper Regan walks away from her home, her husband and daughter, and keeps walking. She tells nobody that she is going. She tells nobody where she is going. She puts everything she ever built at risk. For two lost days and nights, until it looks as though her entire life might unravel, she doesn’t turn back.

Each week, approximately 25 top producers from around the country come to Chiswick to sell their produce. Attend one this month and meet the producers who are more than willing to talk to you about their produce and often give you great recipe ideas. In Chiswick, every producer takes time and effort into producing the very best of their product. Where: Dukes Meadows Trust Pavilion Car Park, Market Drive, off Alexandra Gardens, Chiswick, W4 2RX For more information visit thefoodmarketchiswick.com

9th May: South African Wine Tasting Luxury Tour Operators, Elite Travel Destinations have partnered up with winners of the Platter’s Wine of The Year award, Mullineux & Leeu to host a special South African wine tasting event at The Hogarth. The event takes place from 19:00 22:00. Tickets cost £25. Admission includes entry, canape pairings by Crucial Cafe, 10 wine tastings, and a prize draw entry to win a 2 night stay for two people at the luxurious Leeu Estate in Franschhoek, South Africa plus complimentary wine tasting at Leeu House for 2 and dinner at the Marigold Indian restaurant. To book visit thehogarth.co.uk

Dead Ringers has seen some of the biggest names in comedy come through its ranks since it was created by comedy polymath Bill Dare, producer of Spitting Image. First aired on BBC Radio 4 in January 2000, it has poked fun at the great, the good and the ridiculous without censor. These shows will star the Dead Ringers dream team - Jon Culshaw, Jan Ravens and Duncan Wisbey - cue cards in hand, in a show of sharp political humour. Expect special appearances from Donald Trump, Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Jeremy Vine and John Humphrys, given the Dead Ringers treatment. With a mixture of classics such as Disney Takes Over The Today Show and their unique take on The Archers combined with new sketches, this is a show that promises to make audiences laugh - and cry - at the state of our political life in 2019. To book visit tabardtheatre.co.uk 12th May: Choral Evensong at St Nicholas’ Church A Choral Evensong is to be held on 12 May at 6pm. Head along to this sung service and, if you would like, stay to become a member of the Friends of St Nicholas, whose annual general meeting follows, at 7pm. St Nicholas’ Church, Church Street, W4 2PJ.

Harper meets several men - by a canal, in a pub, in a hotel room by arrangement. It is a violent, comic, heart-breaking odyssey that strains towards truth but finds acceptance is more important and unveils the dark and secret heart of Harper’s family life. Contentment Productions has been created to champion exciting female leads and to help redress the balance towards 50:50 equal representation for female actors. The

CHISWICK clean-up

Fed up with seeing parts of their local area lined with litter and other unpleasantries, local councillors and residents organised a clean-up. What was meant to be a small project has now turned into a monthly clean-up initiative, bringing the community together. For part of this month’s local life, we decided to meet the people behind the inspiring project.

T

he idea for the project first came about when Turnham Green resident Mitra Alam went along to a Friends of Turnham Green meeting in which she spoke about the possibility of organising to clean-up the green. Turnham Green is used by a lot of different people and Mitra was fed up of picking up pieces of plastic on the way to work. Councillor Ron Mushiso has since become the driving force behind the successful initiative running with Mitra’s idea, liasing with parents of Chiswick’s youth and ensuring the events run as seamlessly as possible. Speaking about the ‘‘amazing’’ response that the initiative has had from local people, Mitra says that Chiswick is a unique area because there are an awful lot of people who have lived here for a long time and therefore they are interested in looking after their community. ‘‘People love it here and just want to stay.’’ With her original idea, Mitra was solely thinking about the Turnham Green area but the project quickly extended further afield with one clean-up concentrating on West Chiswick and Gunnersbury. They had only expected three or four volunteers to show up to their first event and although Cllr Ron was apprehensive within minutes 30 people had turned up. The minute they started working and the energy they created whilst going around the green assured him that it would soon gather momentum. However, they couldn’t have predicted that so many as 50 people would turn up to one of the most recent clean-ups - there were so many volunteers that they even ran out of bin bags and gloves! The support of so many residents is a testament to Chiswick. ‘‘I don’t know how many neighbourhoods would replicate that kind of coming together,’’ says Mitra. There are even local residents who have shown up to all clean-ups, with two showing great dedication and bringing visiting family to one of them! Those behind the initiative hope that the monthly clean-ups will raise awareness of the issue of littering and not looking after your neighbourhood. Mitra says we all live in a lovely neighbourhood and if you’re going to enjoy what Chiswick has to offer then you must look after it.

Another plus to the initiative is the socialising after the cleaning is finished. After one clean-up residents got together at Rocks Lane for pizza and a kickabout. This part of the initiative is creating a community even if they are only meeting once a month and enabling residents to exchange their different ideas. Cllr Ron says that every time this has been the part that people have been most looking forward to - where they can make connections. It becomes more than just about litter and instead about socialising and getting to know each other and neighbours. Of course local councillors are involved but this is not about politics, Cllr Ron was careful to state that it doesn’t matter what party you align with, ‘‘if we’re all proud of where we live, we have done our job.’’ Cllr Ron wanted to be involved as he believes people should be proud of the area they live in and treat it that way by not letting it decay, he wants young people to be proud of Chiswick and believes this comes from them doing something in Chiswick - like getting involved with an initiative like this. Already as part of the Great British Spring Clean, which this project did take part in, other clean-ups in surrounding areas have been organised. The plan for this project is clear, Cllr Ron wants to empower residents to do it for themselves. He would like to see the idea developing with residents cleaning up their own streets in their own time once a month. If any of you are thinking about heading along to the next clean-up but haven’t totally made your mind up, or are apprehensive about heading along on your own, Cllr Ron says “everyone’s a stranger at first, after that hour we’re friends, and it’s exercise!’’ Mitra is currently in talks with the Chiswick councillors about the next project towards the end of this month. It promises to be slightly different but very special. Keep an eye on our newspaper The Chiswick Herald where we publicise the monthly clean-ups and keep up to date with their progress.

“Chiswick is a unique area because there are an awful lot of people who have lived here for a long time”

Bedford Park Festival 2019

Green Days Fete and Craft Fair

Torin Douglas writes about Chiswick’s inaugural Green Days weekend that marks the start of the Bedford Park Festival. This year’s event runs from 7th - 23rd June.

W

here will you be on the second weekend in June? For thousands of people in Chiswick, the answer is Green Days weekend – the huge church fete which has been held opposite Turnham Green tube station every summer for over 50 years. This year’s village Green Days Fete and Craft Fair on June 8th and 9th marks the start of the Bedford Park Festival, long regarded as “Chiswick’s favourite fortnight”. It’s a date many would not dream of missing: an occasion to catch up with family and friends and have a good time.

For the past 20 years, I’ve been the MC on the bandstand, introducing lots of live music and other performances. I’ve welcomed many of Chiswick’s best-known celebrities - actors, artists and broadcasters - to open the Festival and I’m delighted that this year Andy Nyman, currently starring in Fiddler on the Roof, is going to do the honours, before appearing in the Saturday matinee at the Playhouse Theatre. He’s also making time to judge the children’s fancy dress competition with the vicar of St Michael & All Angels Church, Father Kevin Morris.

THE CHISWICK MAGAZINE | chiswickmagazine.co.uk

Local Life

The theme, appropriately, is ‘Musicals’ which should give children and parents great scope to produce some fantastic costumes. For children, there’s lots more to enjoy, including a five-a-side football tournament, face painting, games and activities in the children’s corner. A gleeful nine-year-old once called it “the best day after Christmas”! The weekend also includes fairground rides, lots to eat and drink, a high-quality craft fair with 20 exhibitors offering their work for sale, many different stalls, competitions and a Cycle Zone, where experts will offer cycling advice, free bike maintenance and security marking - as well as a chance to win a bicycle. There’s also an Electric Vehicle Zone where companies can display their latest models and talk to people about the environmental benefits of going electric. We also recycle all rubbish as part of our Make Every Day A Green Day campaign, which has been running since 2005. Green Days is just the start!

Father Kevin Morris with actor Kevin McNally

In the following fortnight, there are more than a dozen arts and social events in St Michael & All Angels Church and other venues in Bedford Park. All raise money for charities and the church’s work, with the support of the community and local businesses. This year’s highlights include an interview with the Pirates of the Caribbean star Kevin McNally – whose remarkable range extends from playing King Lear at Shakespeare’s Globe to Tony Hancock in The Lost Hancocks on radio and TV. He will soon be seen as Captain Mainwaring in three lost episodes of Dad’s Army and in the Festival he will be in conversation with Susannah Simons. Another fine actor, Rohan McCullough, will be playing the wife of Sir Winston Churchill in My Darling Clemmie, ahead of its run at the Edinburgh Festival in August; and TS Eliot’s Murder in the Cathedral will be performed by the students of St Paul’s School in St Peter’s Church, Acton Green. Concerts in St Michael & All Angels Church include a return (by popular demand) for the London Welsh Rugby Club choir; a special concert by the London City Orchestra commemorating the 75th anniversary of D-Day; a serenade for flute and strings by internationally acclaimed flautist, Paul Edmund-Davies, with fellow Chiswick resident and violinist David Juritz and others; and a lunchtime concert by The Oxbridge Organ Duo, Benedict Lewis-Smith and Julian Collings, on St Michaels’ magnificent pipe organ. There will also be the regular events, including the Bedford Park Summer Exhibition, which has been displaying paintings by local residents for more than 30 years; the Photographic Exhibition and Competition; the poetry evening; and literary walks. On the final Sunday, June 23rd, there’s the magnificent Festival Mass in St Michael & All Angels Church and the Bedford Park Open Gardens, when a dozen of the finest local gardens can be visited, ending the Festival where it begins on Green Days - back in the open air!

Green Days weekend has been part of the social calendar in Chiswick for over 50 years

And it’s all in a good cause. The charities that will benefit this year are: The Upper Room, which provides meals and other support for the needy in Shepherd’s Bush; The Amber Trust, which helps blind and partially-sighted children fulfil their musical potential; and WaterHarvest, which works with rural communities in India to harvest the monsoon rains, enabling the poorest people to reap the benefits of safer and sustainable water.

The Bedford Park Festival runs from June 7th to June 23rd 2019. Tickets will go on sale shortly, with full programme details, on the Festival’s website: bedfordparkfestival.org

“I

fell in love with Chiswick House the first time I set eyes on it, and I knew straight away I would like to create an outdoor proms festival there. Chiswick has the most amazing community, and so I wanted to create a special event that would celebrate this in the most stunning setting,’’ says Mike Christie, Chiswick Proms founder. Mike’s company Amick Productions puts on hundreds of live shows every year across the UK and beyond. The 3-day open-air festival comprises ‘Chiswick Does Comedy’ on the Friday night, starring comedy legends Jason Manford and Shappi Khorsandi, ‘Chiswick at the Musicals’ on the Saturday night, starring leading lady Ruthie Henshall and a host of West End stars, and ‘Last Night of the Chiswick Proms’ on the Sunday, starring Britain’s most cherished soprano Lesley Garrett and the Chiswick Proms Concert Orchestra. ‘‘I really feel the Chiswick Proms will offer something totally unique, as we will be showcasing comedy, musical theatre and classical music all in the same place over three days. It’s amazing to have had such an incredibly positive reaction from the Chiswickians already,’’ adds Mike.

“I have found the story of Chiswick House absolutely fascinating. For the Chiswick Proms, we will be updating the 18th century tradition of promenade concerts in the pleasure gardens of London”

There will also be a family show on Saturday afternoon where children go free. The perennial favourite by Sergei Prokofiev, Peter and the Wolf, helps children to enjoy the experience of going to a concert by making it fun and entertaining. In addition, Chiswick resident Clare Balding will be making an appearance to talk about the latest book in her Racehorse Book Series, and signing copies. Mike himself is first and foremost a singer, he has been singing professionally since the age of 8. He told us that he was fortunate to have had many performing opportunities and to be surrounded by inspirational people who encouraged him to follow his dreams so now he has decided to give something back.

Mike Christie, founder of Chiswick Proms

Chiswick PROMS

Already establishing itself as one of the ‘must-do’ events in London this summer, the Chiswick Proms launches on 7-9 June at Chiswick House & Gardens.

The Chiswick Proms will also be offering an exciting line-up of free arts workshops for hundreds of people who will have fully-immersive involvement in the arts in ways that they would not otherwise ever experience, and all of them are completely free to take part in. This includes musical theatre in association with ArtsEd, participants will learn a song and routine from a West End show, and then perform it amongst West End stars at ‘Chiswick at the Musicals’ on the Saturday. In addition, there will be stand-up and improvisation in association with Chiswick’s School of Comedy. This truly will be a fantastic celebration of Chiswick’s community. The Chiswick Proms will have high-class entertainment in an informal setting, satisfying both the most seasoned concert-goer and those who have never been to such an event before. ‘‘I love delving into the narrative of historic buildings, so I have found the story of Chiswick House absolutely fascinating. For the Chiswick Proms, we will be updating the 18th century tradition of promenade concerts in the pleasure gardens of London, where the audience would stroll about while listening to the music and a variety of entertainment, hence the name ‘proms’. Instead the audience will be sitting down, maybe even enjoying a picnic on a blanket, then strolling to our various food and drink concessions,’’ explains Mike. Mike told The Chiswick Magazine that the Chiswick Proms will become an annual fixture and they already have next year’s dates booked at Chiswick House (5-7 June 2020). They plan to make each year bigger and better and to grow and develop the event. For more details and to join the mailing list: chiswickproms.co.uk

Chiswick’s Natural Health Apothecary

Zen Maitri

Local residents no longer have to travel across the world to find peace or struggle alone with their health concerns and can instead find solace on their doorstep on Turnham Green Terrace.

THE CHISWICK MAGAZINE | chiswickmagazine.co.uk

W

e paid a visit to Zen Maitri, which opened in W4 at the beginning of the year, to have a chat with co-founder Krishan Dhokia and to find out more about the Natural Health Apothecary that has everyone talking. Zen Maitri has called upon decades of experience in the health and wellness industry to develop their unique store concept. They have an integrated approach to healthcare combining herbal medicine with nutrition, meditation, breathwork and pranayama.

Their focus on herbal medicines provides customers with a range of accessible products to take home. You can either pop in and pick up a prepared product for your health concern from the shelf or have one of their medical herbalists develop medicines, teas, creams or oils specific to your concerns. All products are made from an extensive list of plant-based ingredients.

Photo Story

Zen Maitri chose to open their store here in Chiswick for a number of reasons, mainly because of the tight knit community and village feel to the area. They were aware of Turnham Green’s reputation as a hub for independent businesses and the people of Chiswick have certainly not disappointed in their support of this independent business. Although people are coming from all over London to check out Zen Maitri much of the support they have received has been from local people. It seems that they are on their way to their dream of becoming a ‘‘health and wellness hub for the community.’’ They are already keeping the community at the forefront, including providing free workshops.

They believe nutrition is hugely important as what we eat is one of the single biggest factors in determining our health and well-being. Nutritionists are also available for consultations. What is really great though, is that their in-house nutritionist can work alongside their herbalists to develop bespoke products for you. In addition, they believe that the positive impact of herbal products and dietary changes can be enhanced with breathwork, pranayama and meditation. If you are looking for a way to destress, popping in to one of Laurent Roure’s group meditation classes on a Thursday evening could be the answer. These classes are proving popular so be sure to head online and book early in the week. In addition to Laurent Roure, their team of healthcare professionals includes four medical herbalists, one nutritionist and a pharmacist. Together they take a holistic approach to clients’ needs and challenges, with consultations covering all aspects of well-being and packages available to those who wish to combine different treatments and classes on a regular basis. Zen Maitri’s Natural Health Apothecary is a collaboration between Zen Resort Bali, a holistic Ayurvedic wellness resort in Bali, Indonesia, and Maitri Health, a natural health store in Streatham, south London, which has been around for 27 years. Krishan told us that the resort in the north of Bali has been up and running for 10 years and specialises in sustainability as well as providing jobs for the local community. Zen Maitri, therefore, is also committed to sustainability. They had promised when opening that all products would be packaged using glass and/or recycled paper and that incentives would be offered to customers who return their bottles for re-use. They have stuck true to their word and currently a 5% discount is available to those who bring back bottles to be recycled.

They are on their way to their dream of becoming a ‘‘health and wellness hub for the community.”

20

THE CHISWICK MAGAZINE | May 2019

Zen Maitri believe in the importance of delivering health in a modern, community setting. The influence of Zen Resort Bali is also evident in the design of the store which is as modern as it is soothing. It consists of stunning Balinese furniture, there are benches and chairs for anyone wishing to sit down for a chat as well as a serene downstairs studio. The environment is certainly welcoming and comfortable providing an easy atmosphere for visitors to open up about their concerns. As Krishan puts it, people ‘‘shouldn’t have to go halfway around the world to find peace’’ and now we no longer do! At the time, Nicki says, she thought she was better off behind the scenes as ‘‘a coach not a player.’’ Then in 2008 she took a gamble realising that if people kept suggesting this line of work to her then they must have been seeing something in her that she couldn’t see herself. The rest is history with Nicki a regular on TV screens across the country hosting Escape to the Country or Wanted Down Under and more. Nicki actually delved back into her pop industry background last month fronting a show titled TV Talent Shows at War. In three one hour specials, the show took an exciting look behind the scenes of entertainment talent shows like Popstars and Pop Idol. Of course, with her background, Nicki was heavily involved with the recent show, securing interviews with the likes of Simon Fuller, Louis Walsh, Kate Thornton and Arlene Phillips. ‘‘It really has taken me back,’’ says Nicki. Fans of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show will be expecting to see Nicki on their TV screens later this month but will be sad to find out that Nicki is unable to present this year. No need to fret though - Nicki will be back next May! ‘‘It’s the jewel in my presenting crown,’’ says Nicki. Spring has sprung and how better to get inspiration for your garden than tuning in to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Nicki herself is a keen gardener, she says that she has a small garden in her home in west London but is always changing it, describing it as her ‘‘little bit of sanctuary.’’ Gardening, she adds, is good for us and she says that the beautiful areas in Chiswick keep her feeling inspired.

T

he Baby Box explores just what it was like to be in a mother-and-baby home, pregnant, young, and heavy with the weight of society’s disapproval. Set in the 1960s, it is a unique memoir, revealing Jane’s honest experience of being a pregnant teenager. Jane’s mother, horrified of the shame her daughter brought to the family, banished the young Jane to a mother-and-baby home, where adoption was the normal conclusion. With its strong subject matter, the book is a piece of social history.

Nicki Chapman

The memoir is actually advertised as ‘uplifting’ which might surprise some people considering the topic. ‘‘I was very happy there,’’ explains Jane. Jane was in a Church of England home which she has described in a very positive manner. The matron, she says, was very helpful to her and even arranged for the father of the baby to visit the home. Some days, Jame would be very down but she says it is not in her nature to be negative about life which ultimately explains her approach to her book.

As well as her struggle to find any loving support, Jane’s book describes the outlook of the 1960s towards teenage sex, the unbearable tension, even violence, between her and her mother, countered by the happy atmosphere of the home, with entertaining tales of the other girls living there. This is because on the most part, Jane’s experience We catch up with the much-loved presenter was happy. On sunny days, the girls were allowed to go out,TV on rainy days they would dance to the record player, and on Sunday they would Nicki talks work, gardening and life in W4. go to Holy Communion.

It will come as no surprise then that Nicki is also taking the helm of Channel 5’s new primetime show The Great Garden Challenge, which sees Nicki, alongside garden designer Diarmuid Gavin, gardening expert Carol Klein and landscaper Mark Gregory - judge a competition in which eight teams battle it out to win the prestigious title of ‘Great Garden Challenge Champion’ and the chance to exhibit their garden at the prestigious RHS Garden Wisley. Channel 5’s first evening garden show could be one for those of you, who like myself, might not yet be blessed with green fingers but who are looking for inspiration. The gardeners in the show will be leaving behind incredible gardens for worthwhile causes such as in day care centres and they keep their needs in mind whilst designing. Once they leave, it will be up to the community to look after them. The show is scheduled for summertime. As as soon as you mention Chiswick to Nicki you can sense the love she has for her local community. Nicki told us that she is ‘‘really, really proud to live in Chiswick’’ and unsurprisingly when she isn’t away for work, she uses Chiswick High Road for her shopping as much as she can. ‘‘If I’m home, I’m on the High Road every single day.’’ She places great emphasis on the need to preserve the array of independent businesses in the area. ‘‘Sometimes we forget how lucky we are,’’ adds Nicki. Nicki feels that local people are very well serviced here in Chiswick with everything on their doorstep and should make use of the array of things on offer.

“Really, really proud to live in Chiswick’’

Nicki recently delved back into her pop music past with TV Talent Shows at War last month. Here she is pictured with Nadine Coyle

and Chiswick resident.

The legacy of those two years is still so strong, it is only after half a century that Jane is ready to speak out for herself, for other unwed mothers and for the adults who were, as babies, given away in adoption, and who still wonder if their birth mothers loved them.

Nicki and Kate Thornton, first presenter of The X Factor

Nicki certainly isn’t short of ideas for brilliant ways to spend your time in the local area. She says the walk from Chiswick to Hammersmith is one of her favourite ways to spend her free time as well being grateful to live so close to Kew Gardens. She is a regular at the Headliners Comedy Club at the George IV and also loves to visit The Raven. Nicki also uses The Hogarth Health Club to keep fit and healthy despite her busy schedule. In addition, she often uses Blo Bar Chiswick for her hair styling before work and couldn’t speak highly enough about their professionalism and speed. They even open up early occasionally to help her out before she heads on location for Escape to the Country. Nicki is very invested in her local community, even volunteering at Mary’s Living & Giving Shop for Save the Children. Nicki says that she enjoys this job as it isn’t just about making money but there’s time to chat which is what she believes community shops are all about. She also regularly donates her outfits there so if you are a fan of the clothes you see Nicki wearing on television, pop in there to see if you can bag one of her outfits… Nicki might get to travel far and wide as part of her extensive TV work but she knows she has ‘‘the best of both worlds’’ right here in west London. Join Nicki on Escape to the Country, Wanted Down Under and very soon on Channel 5’s The Great Garden Challenge. You might also see Nicki in Blo Bar Chiswick at the crack of dawn…

Discover more about Chiswick’s local pub The Queens Head Pub & Kitchen in Chiswick is tucked away amongst residential houses on Sutton Lane North and has been described as a ‘‘hidden gem.’’

T

his is a pub with history. It has undergone various name changes over the years, formally being the site of the Smokehouse. But many Chiswick people still remember its original name, the name owner Aneta Barratt chose to go back to following research. Chiswick’s Queens Head pub was established in the 18th century as a village pub and this was the first listed name of the building. Back in the day it was a local pub with a brewery in the back. Famous comedian Tommy Cooper was often spotted there. It was successful in serving the community and Aneta wanted to return to this. Aneta took over the pub in January 2018 and has been running it successfully for over a year. Now, the Queens Head Pub & Kitchen is a gastropub serving delicious food, playing host to various parties and serving families. The pub is also special because your pup does not need to be left at home and can instead relax with you in the open bar area. This gastropub has a unique menu, serving traditional foods with a modern twist. Their Head Chef is Danielle Nuscis, from Sardinia, he boasts years of experience in a French restaurant and has lived in London for more than ten years. Their food therefore is mainly a mixture between Italian, French and English. Their Sunday roast has received rave reviews too with one customer claiming it to be ‘‘the best in Chiswick!’’ They are still serving a selection of smoked food, including their signature dish, smoked ox cheek and mozzarella croquettes. They have a seasonal menu which they change every three months meaning regular visitors get the chance to try an array of food.

Their Sunday roast has received rave reviews too with one customer claiming it to be “the best in Chiswick!’’ The pub also plays host to a variety of beers on tap, bottled beers, sourched wines and whisky. In addition, they have their own gin infusion based on six neat gins, every week they offer a different variation and flavour. As well as non-alcoholic drinks. It is also the perfect spot to have a party or a function, their whisky-snug room can host up to 30 people. Whilst the well-loved dining room seats up to 50 guests. Their garden can seat up to 120 people, a perfect way to spend a sunny day. On such days, the Queens Head can prepare individually created open BBQ parties in their secluded terrace and garden area. The garden is fully secure so adults are able to sit down and relax knowing their children are safe, something very important for a family orientated pub.

They plan to make use of their garden space in the summer with various activities, they will be holding a beer festival or two and even hope to host open cinema nights in their garden - hopefully beginning this month, weather permitting! This revamped local pub has received tremendous support from residents, Aneta expressed gratitude saying, ‘‘we’d like to thank local residents for coming to us’’ adding that seeing a familiar face coming through the door to support the pub really lifts her spirits. As always, the people of Chiswick seem to be rooting for this independent family-run pub restaurant to succeed. This is important as the pub is away from the high street and doesn’t tend to get that trade. This does have its benefits though, as once you pop in a few times, you can approach the door and be recognised, becoming a part of the pub and a part of their community. I

am the youngest sister of the late Hazel Goddard, who was a life-long member of The Hogarth Health Club and had lived in Chiswick for over 40 years. Hazel would often take me there when I was a child back in the 70’s, during school holidays when I would come to stay with her, her husband and their son. After attending Hazel’s wake at The Hogarth in 2016, I felt it only fitting that I exhibit my work there as a small tribute, and to hopefully raise funds for ‘MIND’, the National Association for Mental Health, a charity I feel compelled to support. Twenty percent of all sales will be donated. I grew up in Lewes, East Sussex, where I began my art career as a young adult with no formal training. My desire was to try and develop my own representations, so I emerged working part time, on commission and exhibited local landscapes. Over the years I have become inspired by the surrounding woodland countryside of Sussex and the raw beauty of wild foliage and I now paint landscapes in oils as well as large semi-abstract impressions, inspired from time spent in New Zealand some years ago. Through years of experimenting, these atmospheric semi-abstracts have organically evolved into natural formations of woodland, forests, caves and water. The freedom to oscillate between two different styles of interrelated artwork is very liberating for me. I work full time as a professional artist living and working in rural West Sussex. I exhibit independently, within groups as well as working on commission and am a proud member (and treasurer) of the prestigious Association of Sussex Artists. In 2017, one of my botanical oil paintings was voted 3rd best by The People’s Choice at The Association of Sussex Artists exhibition and later purchased by The Horsham Museum and Art Gallery. I have also received notable portrait commissions in the past, one of them being presented by Lord Monk Bretton of Barcombe, near Lewes, East Sussex in 1983, and another from the Arthur Conan-Doyle Association (Crowborough) in 2003. Its Young Ambassador, Katie Shalka, has brought together stars of the West End to perform in ‘Songs for Jeremy’, an evening of musical theatre, on 12 May, in memory of her father, Jeremy Shalka who died when she was 14. Isabella is one of two young performers singing, the other is Asha Banks, 15, from Hertfordshire. All the others singing are adult performers. Isabella will perform alongside current West End stars such as Trevor Dion Nicholas - who is currently playing the Genie in the West End show Aladdin. Neck Pain

Do you suffer from neck pain? How do you know when it’s serious?

I

n the UK approximately one third of men and women experience regular spinal pain, this includes pain in the lumbar region (lower back) and cer vical region (neck). Whilst back pain is not a new complaint to the UK, neck pain is a growing concern in our population and it is on the rise. Interestingly, neck pain is almost twice as likely in women than it is in men. Recurrent neck pain can be associated with many different, and often multiple causes, which is why it ’s always a good idea to have this looked at by a specialist. Our expert of choice for this is Mr Sanj Bassi, Consultant Neurosurgeon at the London Neurosurgery Partnership (LNP), part of HCA Healthcare UK. We asked Mr Bassi exactly what happens when a patient with persistent neck pain comes to see him at his clinic. Mr Bassi, can you explain how patients with neck pain are referred to LNP? There are three routes by which a patient can be referred. By GP referral, through private healthcare insurance or by simply calling our team directly. At LNP we work as a close-knit group of 11 consultants which means that we can usually offer our patients an appointment the same day or the next working day. We have clinics across London and the South East, including Chiswick, which makes our services easily accessible for all patients. When a patient comes to see you in clinic what can they expect? When a patient arrives at the clinic they will be greeted by one of the HCA UK team at reception before coming into one of the consultation rooms. An initial consultation lasts approximately thirty minutes, depending on the complexity of the case it may take longer. I use this time to get to know the patient, gain an understanding of why they are here and discuss their symptoms and medical history. By the end of the consultation I aim to have a complete picture of what is going on, then work with the patient to form a plan for any tests and potential treatment options if required. What sort of questions will you ask your patients? Some of the questions we would ask a patient presenting with neck pain would include: • Where is the pain located and does it radiate? • What type of pain is it and how long does it last? • What are the aggravating or relieving factors? • Are you getting any pain down your arms or fingers?

What tests may be required for a patient with neck pain? There are various investigations depending on the patients presenting symptoms. The first test I would conduct is an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) which is a scan that uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to produce images of the brain and spinal cord. A nerve conduction study is another test which can identify nerve damage which may be causing neck pain. Finally, blood tests may be required depending on the patient’s symptoms. What are the treatment options? Some patients may not require any treatment, we can reassure them that neck pain in some cases can cure itself within a couple of weeks. In the interim, pain relief may be prescribed or physical therapies can be recommended to help relieve the neck pain. If neck pain persists over several weeks into months we may recommend steroid injections which will provide pain relief for up to three months. We also use radio frequency ablation and this disrupts the pain pathway for six to twelve months. A very last resort for treatment would be decompression surgery, which is used to treat compressed nerves in the lower spine. The choice of treatment is based on the severity of symptoms and how these affect day-to-day life for the patient. What symptoms should patients look out for? Well the most obvious symptom is the neck pain itself, this pain may accumulate and persist over a period of a few days to a week and cause headaches. Patients may also have reduced mobility of their head; you can assess this yourself by moving your head from side to side and up and down and monitor any decline in movement. It is important to seek immediate help if the pain travels down the limbs and if this causes any weakness, tingling or numbness in the extremities. What are some of the common causes of neck pain? We often see patients that experience neck pain as a result of working at a desk and hunching over a computer or due to a trauma from a trip, fall or accident. Other causes include joint wear and tear, nerve compression and diseases, for example osteoarthritis. Less commonly, neck pain can be the result of something more sinister which is why it is important to have your symptoms investigated.

If you are suffering from neck pain or know someone who is then you can contact the London Neurosurgery Partnership, call 020 8131 6232 or visit www.hcahealthcare.co.uk/lnp

Then we would look to ascertain whether there is any impact on neurological function. To assess this, I would ask if the patient has had any problems with dexterity, if day-to-day tasks have become difficult or interrupted their sleep, and if their bladder and bowel function has changed.

Newquay’s

Riding a new wave

THE CHISWICK MAGAZINE | chiswickmagazine.co.uk

The de facto surf capital of the UK is on the up, enjoying a renaissance that perhaps is somewhat overdue, but nonetheless will ultimately bring fresh impetus on the town, the stunning nearby beaches and coastline. Paul Williams takes a weekend break in the South West.

ith major private and council backed investment, tourism is enjoying a resurgence in Cornwall as a whole with Newquay at the forefront of, forgive the pun, a new wave of growth. Cornwall has never been more accessible. With a new route from London Heathrow, travel time is cut significantly but I’m a bit old school and love the drive down the 303 to Exeter, down through Bodmin excitedly waiting for the Atlantic to come into view. I have fond memories of Cornwall, visiting often as a child for those long summer hols. I remember dinghy-ing (like surfing but with a massive inflatable dinghy) the huge surf, and traversing the beautiful coastline spending days on end fearlessly jumping from rocky cliff edge to dubious crag like structures. Arriving in around five hours after leaving London, it’s evident the town is undergoing a bit of a revamp. Quirky bars, independent restaurants and shops have replaced the tacky high street stores that pedal bawdy beside-the-seaside tat. It’s great to see people are taking a leap of faith and pursuing their dreams within business without the money attributed to selling up in London. There is a genuine hive of entrepreneurship and this is certainly the case with my first port of call- a spot of lunch at Sprout Health Foods, a delightful whole foods store providing a daily set meal of whatever’s in the pot, today’s offering being a sweet potato curry, keeping it simple and hassle-free.

It’s on little trips like this that you meet some great local characters The bar at The 55 Yards

The communal table is a great idea offering diners the chance to socialise with like-minded folk, or ignore everyone and mind your own business; no pressure at all, it’s up to you! Claire and Sebastian have a great little place here and I seriously recommend you pop in, even just for a browse - the products they stock are pretty unique, eco-friendly, and the food stuff will keep you healthy for millennia. Accommodation is plentiful in Newquay suitable for any budget. Surf lodges, B&Bs, and well appointed hotels are all within walking distance of the shore and town centre. None more so than the wonderful 55 Yards Bar and Townhouse, just off the high street - 55 yards in fact. What a great idea, my kind of place - well appointed rooms with all the mod cons above a boutique bar that caters for locals and visitors alike. Paul the owner has it right here as far as I’m concerned when it comes to this type of accommodation; there is no breakfast included in an overnight stay, keeping Paul’s overheads down which reflects the beyond reasonable room rate. But don’t worry, he won’t let you starve! Cereal and fresh bread are provided every morning at no extra cost in the kitchen area. Paul is a very warm, welcoming and knowledgeable chap, so any questions you have about the town or Cornwall in general just ask him.

Of an evening the town centre is a busy place with an abundance of restaurants and watering holes and of course during the summer months it becomes extremely busy. Nonetheless, whether you like busy night life or quaint traditional pubs, you’re pretty much spoilt for choice. Dinner was an exquisite example of pan Asian fusion at Kahuna, owned and run by Ryan and Kelly. They have a fantastic selection of vegetarian and vegan dishes too, wonderful service and great atmosphere. I settled for an early night to get the most out of the next day. At first light it ’s a walk down to Towan Beach where early morning surfers pepper the breakers and courteous dog walkers honour the day to you, pretty reassuring in this day and age of isolation and minding your own business. A brisk walk, certainly drives an appetite, and it ’s not often I say this, as I’m no foodie, but the breakfast I had at Bush Pepper was without any shadow of a doubt the best breakfast I have ever eaten in my life. I shall say no more on the matter other than visit and eat - owner and chef Chris Brookes is a culinary visionary without the BS.

What is particularly great about Newquay is its near location to some of the best beaches in the UK, actually while I’m at it, the world. The headland at Pentire has stunning panoramic views across Newquay Bay and Fistral Beach. Clifftop walks here won’t cause any problem for the least rambling minded person, just get out, breathe in the clean Cornish coastal air and thank your parents for bringing you into the world. After a 2-3 hour walk, at the Headland Hotel you can pick up afternoon tea relatively cheaply but without labouring the point, it is really about the views not necessarily the tea and scones. The surf culture is here to stay, attracting visitors from all over the world, which has been a draw for many and a fantastic driver of the local economy. It ’s great to see a town like Newquay on the up, new blood helping develop the town for UK holidaymakers that like to spend a little more than the average and don’t necessarily wax their boards ever y day. This new wave will surely be ridden for years to come.
