et’s go faster!” Faith Bohrer giggles as her mom, Karen, peddles the specially designed tandem bike they ride together near their home in Norfolk. It’s a typical request from a seemingly typical 9-year-old who loves cupcakes, puppies, polka-dot prints and Polka Dot – a small stuffed bear. Whether propped up in Faith’s bike basket on a sunny spring day or tucked under her arm during a chemotherapy treatment at CHKD, Polka Dot has been a steady source of comfort and companionship for Faith during treatment for her brain tumor.

So, it wasn’t a surprise that when Faith was chosen to represent CHKD and the state of Virginia at the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals’ national convention in Orlando, Florida, this year, she asked whether Virginia’s flag could be hot pink with – of course – polka dots. “Now that would be funny,” Faith declares, with the spunky and audacious attitude that inspired CHKD to nominate Faith as a CMN Hospitals Champion. Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals partners with children’s hospitals across the country, including CHKD, to raise local funds and awareness. Faith was announced as Virginia’s Champion earlier this year. She’ll be one of their 52 Champions nationwide – one from each state, plus Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico – to illustrate why children’s hospitals are so important to their communities. Faith’s journey with CHKD began shortly after she was born with a birthmark on her thigh. “One mark is not uncommon,” says Karen. “But over the next few weeks, she had a number of these birthmarks pop up.” Concerned, Karen sought advice from Faith’s pediatrician, Jennifer Holland-Hinton with CHKD Medical Group’s Pediatric Specialists, who referred the Bohrers to the late Dr. Virginia Proud, a medical geneticist with CHKD. Faith’s multiple “birthmarks” were actually “cafe-au-lait” (French for “coffee with cream”) spots, associated with a genetic disorder called neurofibromatosis, or NF. The presence of six or more of these distinctive marks increases the likelihood of an NF diagnosis. Faith had 20. Faith is never without her stuffed bear, Polka Dot, who has joined her for many bike rides, doctor visits – even a trip to Paris. 4

therapy at CHKD’s Health Center at Oakbrooke. “She always left me feeling like it was going to be a great day, no matter what.” Dr. Bevan has watched Faith mature over her years of treatment in the cancer clinic and enthusiastically supported her nomination as the CMN Hospitals Champion. “She can brighten up the room,” he says. Karen says CHKD’s support – from backing the Bohrers’ decision to homeschool, to doctors kneeling on the ground to talk to Faith at her level – has meant the world to her family. “Throughout a family’s difficult journey, CHKD does a wonderful job of emphasizing what your child’s strengths are,” says Karen. “They really have a way of finding beauty from brokenness.” When asked what she’s most looking forward to during her time as a 2014 Champion, Faith doesn’t hesitate. “A lot of parties!” she says. Karen and husband, Merv, will accompany Faith during her tour. She says they feel like ambassadors, too. “There are plenty of parents like us, who go to the doctor’s office and hear what no parent wants to hear. We want to create awareness for those families, and every family in the community, about how incredibly blessed we are to have CHKD in this area,” says Karen. “We want to put the spotlight on CHKD. CHKD is a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital. The mission of CMN Hospitals is to raise awareness and money for children’s hospitals across the United States and Canada. Donations raised through CMN programs remain local to support training, research and equipment purchases and to pay for uncompensated care. As a national CMN Hospitals Champion, Faith will go on the Champion Ambassador Tour to visit Washington, D.C., in October, where she will meet with Congressional representatives and visit the White House. From there, she’ll fly to Orlando, Florida, for the CMN Hospitals’ national convention at Walt Disney World, and receive a medal for meeting her medical challenges with courage. CHANGES This spring, CHKD completed a much-anticipated, year-long redesign of the entrance, lobby and the hospital’s first floor walkways implemented to improve patient access and traffic flow. These welcome changes increased the number of accessible parking spaces; improved patient check-in, drop-off and pick-up; and created a warm and inviting welcome to Virginia’s only freestanding children’s hospital. 1

very day, more than 100 children are treated for scald burns in emergency rooms throughout this country. In many cases, including that of 9-year-old Zechariah Davis, hot liquid from noodle soup prepared in the microwave is the cause of these painfully serious accidents.

Hungry from a long day as a fifth grader at Chesterfield Elementary School in Norfolk, Zechariah heated his favorite instant noodle soup in the microwave and set the hot cup of soup on a pillow beside him on the sofa. Before he could take his first sip, the cup tipped, splashing its hot contents down his left leg. Hearing his screams, Zechariah’s mother, Marian Wilkins, rushed to his side. The skin on her son’s leg and foot was hot and red. Blisters were already beginning to form. Marian immediately cooled the area with wet compresses and wrapped it carefully before packing Zechariah into the car and heading to the emergency department at CHKD. “Zechariah was in a lot of pain, but I knew CHKD could help,” says Marian. “He is my youngest, and I have trusted CHKD with all my children from day one. They know how to treat kids better than anyone. I just wouldn’t go anywhere else.” At CHKD, emergency medicine physician Joel Clingenpeel examined Zechariah and suspected that his burns would need debridement, a surgical procedure to remove the dead and damaged skin to improve healing of the remaining healthy tissue. Zechariah was admitted overnight so the hospital staff could prepare him for surgery immediately the next morning. “Zechariah came to us with partial thickness burns (also known as second degree burns) from his upper thigh down to his ankle and foot,” explains

Dr. Robert Kelly, the CHKD pediatric surgeon who would perform Zechariah’s debridement procedure. “Fortunately, his burns did not penetrate the full thickness of his skin, and he did not require admission to the intensive care unit.” Zechariah chose bubble gum from the 15 flavors of anesthesia offered by CHKD as he prepared for surgery early the next morning. During the procedure, Dr. Kelly removed the burned tissue from the boy’s leg, foot and ankle, creating a neat edge around the wound to minimize scarring, then applied a sterile dressing to reduce the chance of infection. The procedure took less than an hour, and Zechariah was able to go home later in the day with special instructions for follow-up care of his burns as an outpatient. “At CHKD, we specialize in burn care exclusively for children and are well-equipped to handle burns like Zechariah’s, and even those that are much worse,” says Dr. Kelly. “Burns can be extremely painful injuries, and our ability to help children manage pain is especially strong. It’s important to keep our patients as comfortable as possible.” Marian never expected Zechariah’s burns would need anything more than ointment and bandages, and the news that he would require surgery was frightening. But she knew she’d come to the right place. “Dr. Kelly walked me through everything they were going to do in surgery and explained how

The Point of the Matter

or over a decade, radio DJs Chuck Doud and Mary Kathryn “WooWoo” Wood have been sharing CHKD stories on the air at 94.9 The Point. But their connection to the hospital runs much deeper than their participation for 13 years in the four-day radiothon broadcast live each fall from the CHKD lobby. “I was born and raised in Hampton Roads,” says Mary Kathryn, whose mother, Peggy Young, has supported the hospital as a member of the Alice Davis Circle of The King's Daughters since 1981. “When I was a kid, my mom was always doing something for CHKD. She held Circle meetings in our home and fundraisers at our school. Supporting CHKD is a tradition I knew I would carry on,” she says. Mary Kathryn joined a Junior Circle in middle school and is currently active in the Union of Hands Circle. Like her own mother, she is already involving her daughter Maggie in the cause. The 3-year-old recently joined her on the runway at a fashion show event to benefit CHKD. For Chuck, it was a childhood experience that initially drew him to support the hospital. “When I was a kid, my life was saved by a doctor who helped me and didn't charge my family,” he says. “I know what a difference a children’s hospital can make when families are struggling with a sick child.” Chuck’s children have followed their father’s philanthropic example. Ten-year-old Charlie and 8-year-old Theresa collect spare change as part of the radiothon’s Change Bandits and host Anthem LemonAid stands in the summer to raise money for cancer care at CHKD. “As a parent, it’s a huge comfort to know CHKD is here,” says Mary Kathryn. Maggie makes regular visits to pediatrician Kimberly Schindler at Pediatric Associates, a CHKD Medical Group practice. She has even been to CHKD’s emergency room several times over the last few years. “We hear it a lot from other parents, but when it’s your child who is sick, you understand why CHKD is so special.” Chuck’s children have also been patients at CHKD, and he believes that there are few things more important than supporting the health and wellness of children. “I’ve always cared about CHKD, but as a parent, I now have a personal investment in the hospital and a true understanding of how important CHKD is to so many families in our community.” WRITTEN BY Dawn Midgette • PHOTOGRAPHY BY Eric Lusher

rs. C.W. and Marilyn Gowen share traits that come with decades of marriage: They sometimes finish each other’s sentences and, instinctively, often know what the other is thinking. They also share an interest that has molded their lives personally and professionally – a love of CHKD and a strong commitment to see it thrive, now and in the future. C.W., a CHKD neonatologist and chairman of the EVMS department of pediatrics at CHKD, and Marilyn, a pediatric pulmonologist with Children’s Specialty Group, joined the hospital in 1990. They were attracted to CHKD’s child-focused environment and its mission to care for every child. “Everyone who works at CHKD is here for the kids,” Marilyn says. ith helping hands and generous hearts, dedicated CHKD volunteers provide extra care and comfort to our young patients every day. Last year, 654 volunteers contributed 23,543 hours to support CHKD – the equivalent value of $580,100 (calculated using the 2012 Virginia average hourly value of volunteer time). CHKD’s Buddy Brigade pet therapy program had 850 patient and visitor interactions each month at CHKD’s main hospital and locations throughout the Health System. As Virginia’s largest hospital volunteer program for teens, the Junior Volunteer Program at CHKD works with over 200 high school students each summer and was recognized by Volunteer Hampton Roads with an Award of Excellence. Gratitude A very special evening with Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters & CHKD Donors

In appreciation for their generous gifts, CHKD welcomed hospital donors who gave an annual contribution of $1,000 or more for an evening of gratitude and fellowship. Held in the TowneBank Atrium at CHKD, attendees of the April event explored the hospital’s new interactive fish pond and mingled with artist Therman Statom, who created a unique glass installation for the hospital.

This gift helps provide care for approximately 1,000 abused and neglected children in Hampton Roads each year.
