Jayden’s treatment began immediately with an aggressive chemotherapy regimen to shrink the tumors. Six weeks later, in mid-December, CHKD surgeon Robert Obermeyer,

removed the tumor on Jayden’s right kidney, leaving most of the organ intact. Then Jayden went through another course of chemotherapy in preparation for the most challenging aspect of his treatment: removing the grapefruit-sized mass from his left kidney without removing the entire organ.

“Even after two rounds of chemo, the tumor was huge – larger than any other organ in Jayden’s body,” says Dr. Obermeyer. “It was pressing on his aorta and his diaphragm.

And we knew the surgery would affect drainage from the kidney into the bladder.”

To prepare for the complex procedure, Dr. Obermeyer created a detailed, written plan for the operation and reviewed it step-by-step with the entire surgical team, which

included fellow pediatric surgeon Michael Goretsky and pediatric urologist Louis Wojcik.

The surgery took eight hours. When Dr. Obermeyer met with the Lees afterwards, he was able to share good news. The surgical team removed the entire tumor and managed to save 30 percent of Jayden’s left kidney. Dr. Wojcik reconstructed the path of kidney drainage to the bladder.

“A healthy kidney has about a million tiny structures called nephrons, which filter waste and produce urine. In cases like this, every nephron is important,” says Dr. Obermeyer. “Though the remaining kidney is small, Jayden is going to grow – and his kidney will have an opportunity to grow too.”

Jayden spent the following month in the hospital as his kidney slowly healed. “That was an especially tough time,” Tiara says. “It seemed like he was in the hospital forever.”

During that time, Tiara specifically recalls the importance of the support CHKD provided to the entire Lee family. Child life specialists kept Jayden entertained during treatments, helped Javon during visits with his brother and regularly lifted Tiara’s lagging spirits. “I cried on the shoulder of Bryan Sellitti, a child life specialist in the cancer clinic, plenty of days,” she admits.

Despite the seriousness of his condition, Jayden never lost his smile. When he was finally able to get up and walk, he gave it his all. “He took off running down that hall with the tube hanging out of his back,” Tiara remembers. “Jayden is a strong kid. He is my warrior child.”

Today, Jayden is a happy, healthy pre-kindergartner who is back to making mischief alongside his brother. “Jayden is doing great. He will continue with follow-up tests every three months for several years,” Dr. Owen says. “His prognosis is excellent.”

Most of all, the Lees are grateful to CHKD for doing everything possible to save Jayden’s kidneys and ultimately his life. Dr. Obermeyer is also very pleased with Jayden’s outcome. “When you care for children, it makes you want to fight for them more because they have so much life ahead of them,” says Dr. Obermeyer. “You want to make sure you do everything you can.”

Urgent Matters Expanding to meet the healthcare needs of children

When the first CHKD Urgent Care opened in January, families were waiting at the doors. Twelve-year-old Dale Vick was one of the center’s first patients.

“Dale had hurt his hand the day before and kept complaining that his wrist hurt,” says Dale’s mom, Tracey, who made the 50-minute drive from their home in Franklin to the urgent care center in Chesapeake. “Instead of going through the hassle of an emergency room visit – or even a regular urgent care center – I wanted to go somewhere that specialized in kids,” she says.

Dale was examined by Dr. Vicky Leff, a pediatrician with CHKD Urgent Care, who was able to diagnosed him with a sprain after an X-ray was taken by the center’s radiology services. “It’s great for families who need medical attention when their pediatrician’s office is closed or are looking for a child-friendly place to get lab tests or X-rays done,” says Dr. Leff.

Since opening day, more than 4,000 patients – ranging in age from infants to teens – have visited CHKD Urgent Care for strep tests, sprains, stitches and more. Plans are in place to establish more CHKD Urgent Care throughout Hampton Roads, with locations in Virginia Beach and Newport News scheduled to open in 2016.

BACK ON HIS FEET CHKD saves Landyn’s foot.

A

t first, little Landyn Gutierrez’s foot looked too horribly mangled to save.

While the bottom surface and toes of the 3-year-old’s right foot were intact when he arrived at Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters last June, the entire top section – everything between his ankle and toe joints – had been shredded by a riding lawnmower. He was missing tissue and bone.

The tendons to his toes were destroyed. The wound was filled with dirt and grass, leaving the preschooler at risk for a life-threatening infection.

Landyn’s injury occurred at his family’s home in rural Hertford, N.C., when a family member accidently ran over his foot with the mower. Accidents like his are more common than most people realize, occurring approximately 17,000 times a year. Landyn had been helping his mother, Crystal, carry in groceries from her car. Landyn set his bags down in the kitchen and dashed back outside, with Crystal following close behind him. But as she reached the front door, she heard screaming.

“Landyn was still trying to run on his foot,” says Crystal. “There was blood everywhere.”

Crystal frantically dialed 911. Her husband, Jason, wrapped Landyn’s foot in a towel and applied pressure to his ankle to stem the bleeding. The couple put the child in the car and drove to meet an ambulance at a nearby gas station, which took Landyn to the local hospital. From there, Landyn was flown by helicopter to CHKD’s emergency room, where pediatric surgeons and specialists were standing by to assess his traumatic injury.

Dr. Allison Tenfelde, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon at CHKD, was on call that night. “This was an extremely

complex and traumatic injury,” she recalls. “Looking at it, you couldn’t even discern the shape of a foot. I knew that we were facing a very real risk of having to amputate his foot.”

The immediate concern was avoiding infection.

Lawnmower blades are covered with dirt and whirl at 3,000 revolutions per minute, driving debris deep into the wounds they cause. That night – and almost every day in the weeks that followed – Landyn went to the operating room to have his wound flushed with a high-powered saline spray and re-bandaged to avoid infection. Dr. Tenfelde and a team of CHKD pediatric surgeons, medical specialists, nurses, physical therapists and child life staff members connected with the family after every procedure to assess the current state of Landyn’s injury.

As the days passed, the risk of infection lessened, and Dr. Tenfelde consulted with multiple colleagues including Dr. George Hoerr, a pediatric plastic surgeon at CHKD, on how to repair the foot with the limited healthy soft tissue that had survived the accident. “Of course I wanted to see Landyn up and walking on his own foot, but it was always about what was best for him,” says Crystal. “They worried about Landyn like he was their own child.”

Unlike more common injuries, such as a fracture or sprain, severe pediatric trauma injuries are unique, and the healing process can be unpredictable. “Every case is completely different,” says Dr. Tenfelde. “There is no standard surgical approach to treating trauma cases like Landyn’s.”

Almost three weeks after the accident, Dr. Tenfelde operated on Landyn, hoping to reconstruct his foot.

bone grafts and surviving bone before closing the wound.

While she warned his family that his foot could be much smaller after surgery, Landyn lost only a half-inch of length in his injured foot.

“In general, children have better healing potential than adults,” says Dr. Tenfelde. “If this had been an adult patient, an attempt to save the foot might not have been made.

Even with Landyn, it wasn’t clear at first whether we could or should save his foot. That was a big responsibility and required a very careful approach.”

CHKD staff did their best to make the family feel comfortable during Landyn’s month-long stay in the pediatric intensive care and inpatient units. “Everyone, especially Dr. Tenfelde, just put their hearts into my son,” says Crystal. Dr. Tenfelde shared games on her cell phone with the little boy, and child life specialists talked with him and his upset siblings. Though he’d have months of physical therapy ahead of him, Landyn left CHKD after a month in the

hospital … with both feet.

Due to the complexity of Landyn’s injury, Dr. Tenfelde was reluctant to celebrate fully until a follow-up appointment about nine months later. “When I saw him running and jumping, I could breathe a sigh of relief,” she says.

“He’s gone right back to his old self,” Crystal says. “He’s a handful. He runs, jumps down steps and jumps on both feet like nothing ever happened. It doesn’t hurt him at all.”

The family hopes their experience can raise awareness of the dangers posed by lawnmowers. CHKD sees at least one traumatic mower injury each summer, whether lacerations from blades, falls from riding mowers or wounds from kickedup debris such as rocks and sticks. “It’s important to keep kids off of and away from all mowers,” Dr. Tenfelde advises.

“Children should be inside when a lawnmower is going.”

Crystal is looking forward to putting the accident behind them and is thrilled to watch her youngest son back in action.

“Landyn is so full of life,” she says. “I’m so grateful to CHKD.”

Involvement, support and leadership: CHKD Board Chairman John Lawson

For more than three decades, John Lawson, president and CEO of W.M. Jordan Company, has provided support and leadership for CHKD.

ohn Lawson began his longstanding relationship with CHKD more than three decades ago. “When our company was selected to construct the hospital’s first-ever operating suite, I learned a lot about CHKD, and I knew I had to get more involved. CHKD increases the quality of life in our community, which is vitally important. I wanted to make sure other people saw that too,” he says.

As John’s commitment to the mission of CHKD grew, so did his involvement.

In 1996, he agreed to join the board of directors, where he served for nine years. “It was wonderful to be part of the hospital’s growth back then. CHKD grew in size and influence while maintaining the core values it had established,” he says. “CHKD’s ability to not only help people but to innovate is inspiring.”

During the past 30 years, John has given generously to CHKD and worked tirelessly

to encourage others to do the same. This October, W.M. Jordan Company will host its 25th annual charity golf tournament to benefit CHKD. Proceeds from the event, which has raised more than $875,000 for the hospital and its programs over the years, have made a profound impact on the lives of children who depend on CHKD. In 2011, as CHKD entered a new era of growth and opportunities, John agreed to return to the board as its chair. “I have experience that can be of value to CHKD right now. Helping others and making an impact, in any way you can, is the right thing to do,” he says. “And, honestly, it feels good too.” John’s term as chairman will end in July but, the effects of his sound leadership and focus on meeting the needs of the community will have a far-reaching impact on the organization in the future.

“We have been incredibly fortunate to have John’s leadership on the board,” says

Jim Dahling, president and CEO of CHKD Health System. “His contributions and business development insights have been invaluable as we plan the future of CHKD, and we are grateful for his commitment to our mission.”

John says the example set by his father, Bob Lawson, had a strong and lasting impact on his philosophy of giving. “I learned that if you only help your best friend or neighbor, but never help a stranger, or never help a child, you don’t have the same ability to magnify your efforts to many times greater than what one individual can do,” he says.

John hopes to pass that same lesson along to others through his support of CHKD. “Helping comes in many forms. When people see a kindness, they are much more likely to replicate the kindness to others,” says John. “The more people who understand that, the better our community will be.”

Tender care inspires decades of annual giving

hen Lynn Schoenbaum’s daughter Rachel was just a few weeks old, the new mother learned her baby would need surgery at Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters. Lynn still vividly recalls the special care they received during those anxious days – an impression that has inspired her annual gift to CHKD for the past 25 years.

Though Rachel seemed healthy, she struggled during feedings and grew fussier each week. “Rachel was 6 weeks old, and she couldn’t keep any food down,” Lynn says.

Her pediatrician recommended testing, and an X-ray confirmed her daughter’s diagnosis. Rachel had pyloric stenosis.

The condition causes a thickening of the muscular valve between the stomach and the small intestine, blocking the passage of food. In order to relieve the blockage, 16

Rachel would require surgery. “In the grand scheme of things, it was not what I would call a ‘big deal’ surgery,” Lynn recalls. “But at the time, it was a big deal for me and my six-week-old baby.”

The moment Lynn arrived at CHKD with her new baby, she knew the hospital was different. “They had to fit us into the surgery schedule that day, and they let me know every step of the way exactly what was going to happen with Rachel,” Lynn says.

“When the time came to take her to surgery, they put me in a wheelchair and wheeled me to surgery with Rachel in my arms. I was able to hand her to the surgeon. It was so personal and caring. And it left a very big impression on me.”

Lynn immediately began to support the hospital. In addition to volunteering at fundraising events, Lynn has faithfully given a donation to the hospital every year since

Rachel was born. “In my brief experience at CHKD, we were treated so incredibly well,” Lynn says. “I could only imagine what it must be like for parents of children with really serious health issues and how important that kind of care and treatment would be.

That meant a lot to me.”

Today, Rachel is 25 years old and thriving on the West Coast, where she works for a creative agency. Despite the miles between their homes, the bond between mother and daughter remains strong, as does their support of CHKD. Lynn still lives in Norfolk, not far from the hospital that helped her daughter so many years ago. “I feel it is important to give back to such a wonderful place. I know I’ll never need the hospital again, but others will,” Lynn says. “It’s a comfort to know CHKD is there.”

W

hen executives at Capital Group select an organization to support through philanthropy, they look for two main qualities: the impact it has on the region it serves and the connection it has to their associates.

Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters has always been an easy choice.

“We have so many associates here whose families have directly benefitted from CHKD,” says Scott Duncan, general manager of the investment management company’s Norfolk location. “They’ve not only found top-notch medical care at the hospital, but an oasis where they can feel loved and supported in the midst of difficult situations.

We understand CHKD’s very real and meaningful impact on people.”

The local office of Capital Group, a Los Angeles-based company that manages $1.5 trillion in assets worldwide, has

made generous annual donations for many years and also established an endowment for CHKD’s child abuse program. The 550-employee Norfolk site has also sponsored the annual David Wright Vegas Night fundraiser since it began five years ago.

Dee Pritchett, chairman of the branch’s contribution committee, has an especially deep connection to CHKD: his young daughter, Morgan, battled brain cancer for more than a year at CHKD. Morgan was two weeks shy of her 7th birthday when she passed away in 2009. Having access to cutting-edge cancer treatments near the family’s home gave Morgan precious time with her parents and two little brothers who were 3 and 1 when she was diagnosed.

“It made such a difference to her quality of life – to our whole family – to not have to travel away from home,” Dee says. “Everyone

we met on Morgan’s journey, from doctors to nurses to hospice workers, was there out of love for the kids. The medical care is at the core of CHKD, but it’s so much more than that.”

Scott found that same caring environment on a recent tour of CHKD’s child abuse center, which has grown into a nationally recognized resource that also trains pediatricians to be medical experts on child abuse and neglect. “Child abuse is something people don’t like to think about,” he says. “That’s one of the reasons we have specifically earmarked funds for the program.

Volunteers In 2014, volunteers provided an invaluable service to CHKD. Six-hundred and fifty four dedicated volunteers contributed 24,480 hours in support of our children, and the estimated monetary equivalent of their donated time was $552,024 (calculated using the 2013 Independent Sector average hourly value of volunteer time).

CHKD’s Buddy Brigade program, which uses certified pet therapy dogs to comfort CHKD patients, was recognized by the Association of Healthcare Volunteer Professionals with the 2014 Traditional Program Excellence Award.

More than 240 high school students participated in CHKD’s Junior Volunteer program last summer, making it Virginia’s largest hospital teen volunteer program.

Philanthropy Matters | Support for CHKD

Support for CHKD

Many events are held during the year to support the children at CHKD, hosted by individuals, businesses and organizations throughout our community.

Princess Anne and Frank W. Cox High Schools joined together to host the 11th annual Love Run for CHKD. Students, faculty and families ran the 5K race in support of the kids at CHKD. Northwestern Mutual, in partnership with Starlight Children’s Foundation, donated three Starlight Fun Centers to CHKD. The mobile units are equipped with a video game system children can use at their bedsides. CHKD patient Austin Salazar, center, with parents Jennifer and Jeff Salazar (to the right) presented the donation to CHKD staff in the hospital’s playroom.

Community leaders, families and students came together to celebrate CHKD’s BeKindDoKind campaign, an educational campaign to help foster kindness, helpfulness and compassion supported by Kohl’s Cares®. The Sassy Snappers Portsmouth Chapter of the Red Hat Society presented a $4,500 check to CHKD from their annual fundraiser. They have raised more than $21,000 for the kids over the past 12 years.

Students and hospital supporters raised more than $13,000 For The Kids (FTK) at CHKD during the College of William & Mary’s first TribeTHON – a Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals® Dance Marathon organized by students at the college to benefit the hospital.
