What a difference a year makes! Just a year ago, Alexa showed off her Beads of Hope necklace during her stay at CHKD for cancer treatment. You can see Alexa just one year later, on the previous page, appearing this spring with curly hair, a sweet grin and very happily free of cancer.

Alexa’s Beads In the fall of 2015, Alexa’s pediatrician ordered several tests to determine the cause of the 3-year-old’s recurring fevers and stomachaches. Her parents were shocked when an ultrasound revealed a large mass on one of Alexa’s kidneys. Additional testing at CHKD revealed lesions in both of her lungs. Alexa had cancer. She was diagnosed with Stage IV Wilms’ tumor, a rare kidney cancer that primarily affects children. “When we first got the news, we were devastated. We couldn’t believe our little girl had cancer, but the entire team at CHKD was there to answer all our questions. They supported us from the very beginning,” says Alexa’s mom, Anne. Alexa spent the following months traveling from her home in Williamsburg to CHKD for chemotherapy treatments to fight her disease. CHKD child life specialists introduced Alexa to the Beads of Hope program, which helps patients understand and cope with the complexity of their care. First, Alexa received a “starter” necklace of beads that spelled out her name. After each chemotherapy treatment, blood test or other treatment milestone, she collected another meaningful bead to symbolize her completion of that step. “The Beads of Hope program is a great way to help children and families celebrate every small victory during their battle with cancer and at the same time build a tangible, lasting record of their child’s journey,” says Stephanie Langevin, nurse manager of the Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders Center at CHKD. “The kids get excited about collecting their next bead, which sometimes helps distract them from the many procedures and tests they have to endure.” For children like Alexa, a starter necklace can quickly turn into a long, colorful strand. “Alexa has collected 72 beads, and her favorite is a teddy bear that represents her nurse, Mr. Rob,” says Anne. “When she was in the hospital receiving treatment, getting a new bead was something she could look forward to, and she enjoyed carefully stringing each one on her necklace.” Last summer, Alexa celebrated the end of her treatment, adding a very special bead to her necklace – a lion to signify her courage and strength. And a year after her diagnosis, she and her family received the news they were hoping for – Alexa was cancer-free. Today, Alexa’s string of beads isn’t getting any longer – and that’s a good thing. Still, it hangs prominently on the dresser in her bedroom and remains a colorful chronicle of hope for a happy and healthy future.

even-year-old Layla Annabelle enters the CHKD auditorium, filled with 50 doctors-in-training, as a special guest speaker from the pediatric medical genetics department. She flashes her contagious smile, waves her tiny hand at the crowd and announces, “Hello, all of you. I’m Layla. This is so amazing you’re all here!” Layla is a happy-go-lucky child who is extraordinarily outgoing. Her personality is one of the characteristics of Williams syndrome – a rare genetic disorder that is marked by medical issues, physical characteristics and, most noticeably, a joyful demeanor with essentially no social fear. When Layla was born, doctors detected a heart murmur. Tests revealed she had supravalvular aortic stenosis, an obstruction of blood flow through the heart caused by narrowing of the large blood vessel that carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body. This discovery, along with some distinctive facial features, triggered a genetic test confirming that the 7-week-old had Williams syndrome. “My husband and I were in shock. We had never heard of Williams syndrome and had no idea what it would mean for our daughter’s future,” says Layla’s mom, Michelle. Williams syndrome is rare, occurring in only 1 in 20,000 people. It is caused by the absence of roughly 25 genes on chromosome 7. This deletion appears to occur randomly with no known cause. And, although humans carry more than 20,000 genes, the loss of just 25 can have profound effects on an individual’s physical, behavioral and cognitive makeup. The syndrome is characterized by a variety of medical problems, developmental delays, learning difficulties, small stature and distinctive facial features including a small turned-up nose, wide mouth, full lips and a small chin. But, it’s the strikingly social personality, gift for language and affinity for music that makes these patients truly unique.
“As fun-loving as Layla is now, it didn’t start out that way,” says Michelle. Infants with Williams syndrome often have digestive issues and extreme colic during the first year of life due to increased blood calcium levels, which can result in extended periods of crying and difficulty establishing sleeping patterns. “In addition to being a first-time mom of a child with a rare diagnosis, I was overwhelmed with a screaming infant who only slept 10 minutes at a time.” When Layla was only a few months old, the family moved from their hometown in Connecticut to southeastern Virginia, where Layla’s father, Richard, was stationed with the Navy. Michelle and Richard were relieved to discover Layla could get all the care she needed at Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters, just an hour away from their new home. During her first visit with Dr. Samantha Vergano, a pediatric medical geneticist at CHKD, Michelle immediately knew they were in the right place. “Dr. Vergano was amazing and made us feel so confident in the quality of care we would receive from CHKD,” says Michelle. “She not only had experience with Williams syndrome, she quickly became a compassionate advocate for us. She coordinates all of Layla’s care, anticipating needs we may not even think of, and has connected us with wonderful specialists all along the way.” CHKD’s medical genetics and metabolism program plays an important role in the diagnosis, counseling and treatment of children with a wide range of genetic disorders, birth defects and developmental delays. The team is led by Dr. Vergano, who SUMMER 2017

is board-certified in both pediatrics and medical genetics, and includes board-certified genetic counselors, a metabolic dietitian, nurses, an education consultant and a social worker, all of whom are trained to help children and families manage the needs associated with a wide variety of genetic diagnoses. It is the only clinic of its kind in southeastern Virginia. “We develop an individualized treatment plan to meet the very unique needs of each child we treat and their families,” says Dr. Vergano. “We also provide recommendations, referrals and coordination of care with the wide range of pediatric specialists and services each child may require. ” In addition to medical genetics, Layla’s CHKD care team includes specialists in cardiology, neurology, audiology, developmental pediatrics and therapy services. By working together to ensure her physical, emotional and developmental health at an early age, they give Layla the best chance of reaching her full potential. “It’s been a pleasure to watch Layla grow and thrive over the years. Her cardiac issues are stable and, other than an early speech delay, she has hit every milestone within a normal range,” says Dr. Vergano. “Both Michelle and Layla have become an amazing resource for other Williams syndrome families as well as the doctors we train.” Though Michelle’s life is now busier than ever, with a family that has grown to include three more children, three dogs and 22 chickens, she is happy to talk to anyone about the special challenges and gifts that come with Williams syndrome. “If someone is in a bad mood or having a bad day, Layla has a way of 8

making them smile,” Michelle says. But Layla’s fearless social nature presents a special challenge. “She’s impulsive and can’t really understand the need for caution in many situations. So, it’s important that we are extremely vigilant in her supervision. She even has an aid in school to make sure there is an extra set of eyes on her.” Though Layla may always need some extra support, with the continued efforts of her family, and her team at CHKD, her future is bright. Many children with Williams syndrome go on to college or to jobs in a variety of fields, often using their gifts for music, language and social interaction to bring joy to others. “I do have worries about Layla’s future, but mostly I have a lot of hope,” says Michelle. “Having access to a great care team that really understands our needs is so important - for any parent of a child with special needs or health challenges. We’re so thankful for Dr. Vergano and CHKD. We couldn’t have ended up in a better place.”

Road to Recovery The ocean-themed mural displayed on this medical vehicle may look playful, but behind the colorful design is serious business. This CHKD transport offers the highest level of pediatric intensive care available on wheels, designed to provide life-saving care to children en route to the hospital. And standing in front of it are the heroes who make it happen. KD4 is one of four CHKD transports in the health system’s fleet designed to provide critical care. Nearly 30 critical care team members, most pictured here, include registered nurses, respiratory therapists and paramedics. They work in teams of three and are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to transport children with serious medical or surgical conditions to CHKD’s main hospital in Norfolk. The teams make more than 1,500 transports each year. “About 30 percent of our transports are newborns transported to CHKD’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Most are premature or have breathing problems,” says Jamie Carter, director of the transport program. “Our other transports involve children who have serious breathing problems or injuries due to traumas, illnesses, seizures, falls or car accidents and need the pediatric care only CHKD can provide.” The critical care transport team is often the first introduction many parents get to CHKD. “We are the front door to CHKD for many families who have never been to the hospital. We all recognize the importance of that first impression, especially in a time when things are chaotic, stressful and emotional for the family,” says Chris Cannon, who has served with the department for 14 years. “We work to help parents understand everything that is happening and reassure them that their child is in good hands.” Working with families during an unexpected health crisis can be stressful, but incredibly rewarding, explains Cannon. “We all have many stories that stick with us. One of the most intense situations we had last year involved a mother and baby who both went into cardiac arrest. Our team was able to resuscitate the baby,” says Cannon. Today, mother and child are doing well. “Everyone works so hard for our patients, not just in transport, but throughout CHKD – from the emergency department to the pediatric intensive care unit to rehabilitation,” says Cannon. “When you see all the pieces come together for a positive outcome for a child, it’s pretty inspiring.” SUMMER 2017

L
ook, the doors actually open and close,” says Hunter Blankenship as he shows off his latest Lego construction, a realistic replica of the famous station wagon from the “Ghostbusters” movie series. The car was a gift for his 13th birthday this past spring. Like many kids his age, Hunter loves building things, and his collection of intricate creations is so large it has taken over an entire room in his family’s Windsor home. Now officially a teen, Hunter and his family are celebrating the milestone with extra enthusiasm and gratitude. “We feel very fortunate,” says Hunter’s mom, Amy, a local preschool teacher. “Without the team at CHKD, Hunter might not be here.” In 2007, 3-year-old Hunter was suffering from chronic respiratory problems. His mother took him to see Dr. Laura Leverone at Suffolk Pediatrics, a CHKD Medical Group practice. Dr. Leverone referred Hunter to CHKD’s pulmonology clinic for evaluation and testing. His parents were stunned when their only child was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, as neither of them knew of any family history of the disease. “At first, we were overwhelmed. I remember wondering how we were going to be able to care for Hunter,” says Amy. “But the team at CHKD was so informative and supportive. They have been by our side from day one.” Cystic fibrosis is caused by mutations in the gene that produces a protein that regulates the flow of salt and fluids in and out of cells in the body. The malfunction of this protein causes the body to produce thick, sticky mucus that can block airways, cause severe lung infections and even lead to respiratory failure. The mucus also prevents digestive enzymes produced by the pancreas from reaching the small intestine where they are needed to break down food and absorb nutrients. People with cystic fibrosis often experience shortness of breath, persistent coughing, and they may have trouble growing and gaining weight. Although there have been great advancements in the treatment of cystic fibrosis, it is a chronic, life-threatening disease that does not yet have a cure. 12

At each checkup, Hunter tests his lung function by blowing out virtual candles on a cake. The computer program uses spirometry software to measure how much air Hunter can pull into his lungs and how quickly he can exhale air out of his lungs.
Dr. Cynthia Epstein, a pediatric pulmonologist and the director of the Cystic Fibrosis Center at CHKD, has been part of Hunter’s care team since his diagnosis. “One of the greatest things about our program at CHKD is that children and young adults have a multidisciplinary team of pediatric specialists working together at every visit to provide all of the medical care, support and education they need,” says Dr. Epstein. “Kids like Hunter see pulmonologists, infectious disease specialists, nutritionists, respiratory therapists, social workers and nurses.” As an accredited member of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s care center network, the Cystic Fibrosis Center at CHKD helps shape best practices in caring for patients with cystic fibrosis and participates in the latest clinical research. Since the discovery of the cystic fibrosis gene in 1989, continued genetic research has led to some of the most significant improvements in care. Today, there are more than 1,700 known mutations of the gene. Care centers like CHKD share data including the exact genetic mutations of individual patients. This 14

collaboration has led to the development of medications that improve symptoms and some that even correct defects caused by specific genetic mutations. Last year, about 140 children and young adults received care at the CHKD Cystic Fibrosis Center. These patients must make frequent visits to stay healthy. Hunter has made over 100 visits to CHKD since he was diagnosed. “I remember walking down the hallway with Hunter in his stroller in the early days,” says Amy. “The staff here has cared for him almost his entire life.” During his first admission, Shannon Hood, a child life specialist, gave Hunter a toy medical kit, which he still has today. “Hunter is a kid with a lot of energy who doesn’t let a hospitalization bring him down,” says Shannon, who has watched Hunter grow up during the past decade. “We get to know our patients over the years and try to create fun environments for them while they are with us.” “I like all of the movies and video games, and sometimes I even get to leave with a new set of Legos,” says Hunter of his time in the hospital.

“One of the greatest things about our program at CHKD is that children and young adults have a multidisciplinary team of pediatric specialists working together at every visit to provide all of the medical care, support and education they need.” - Dr. Cynthia Epstein
Cystic fibrosis requires lifelong care management and ongoing health education. At CHKD, the cystic fibrosis team helps patients understand their illness at an age-appropriate level and teaches patients how to take care of themselves with a goal of reducing hospital visits. “Today, the predicted median survival age for a person with cystic fibrosis is almost 40, compared to the 1950s when children with the disease barely reached elementary school age,” says Dr. Epstein. “Even in just the last five years, we have seen great advances in treatment. New medications have been shown to reverse mucus buildup, aid in weight gain, greatly improve lung function and prevent further damage. There are even two drugs that target the underlying cause of cystic fibrosis—the defective CFTR protein—in some patients. And there are many more in the pipeline. There is optimism in the field that I think is important to communicate to families.” Hunter’s current treatment plan includes many medications, some of which are available because of the ongoing clinical research that CHKD participates in. In addition, Hunter wears a specialized therapy vest three times a day that oscillates his chest wall to help move mucus out of his lungs. Today, Hunter is feeling good and looking forward to his summer vacation. “It has definitely been quite a journey,” adds Hunter’s dad, Brandon. “The support of the CHKD team and other patient families has helped us tremendously.” Hunter doesn’t focus on his cystic fibrosis. He’s more interested in building robots, working in the mechanic shop with his grandad and starting the eighth grade this fall. When asked how he feels about living with cystic fibrosis, he responds without hesitating. “I only wish for one thing,” he says. “A cure.”

hen 6-year-old Julian was a baby, he was diagnosed with a rare illness that impairs the function of his liver and muscles. Managing his condition is a daily challenge, and his closely monitored diet is supplied through a gastrostomy tube – just like the one his nurses put on his little stuffed dog. Julian often uses a wheelchair to help him get around due to severe muscle fatigue. Despite more than 200 visits to CHKD, Julian is smiling. Because, even though he has endured multiple hospital stays, visits to CHKD also include hugs from our therapy dogs and afternoons in the playroom. CHKD helped Julian get the special wheelchair he needs to keep up with his friends at school and the medical care he needs to manage his disease. And on this day, a surprise visit from CHKD’s Healthy Bear had Julian grinning from ear to ear. CHKD could not provide this kind of care for Julian without the generous support of our donors. For this reason, we recognize those who have contributed $500 or more during the year in our annual CHKD Honor Roll. The support and commitment of these individuals and organizations gives kids like Julian the best chance of continuing to play, grow and learn as they navigate life with severe illnesses and recover from traumatic injuries. So, on behalf of Julian and his family – and the thousands of other children who need CHKD in our community – we thank you.

N
ew York Mets captain David Wright may be well known for his success as a professional baseball player, but he won special admiration from local fans long ago when he first visited CHKD with gifts for kids in the hospital on Christmas Eve. A decade later, David and his wife, Molly, continue their visits and support, which to date have raised more than $1 million to provide care to children at CHKD. A graduate of Hickory High School in Chesapeake, David credits his parents, Elisa and Rhon Wright, with inspiring his sense of responsibility to the community. He found an opportunity to give back at CHKD and began making regular visits with the kids in the hospital more than 10 years ago. “It is always such a pleasure to hang out with these kids, play games and just talk,” says David. “I want to cheer them up, but they’re the ones that end up making me smile.” After several visits to CHKD’s eighth floor playroom, David donated $25,000 through the David Wright Foundation to provide activities and entertainment for hospitalized kids, including an extensive movie and video game library. In 2011, David raised more than $100,000 by hosting his first Vegas Night fundraiser for CHKD, which has since become his signature event. 20
Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters
When David and Molly were married in 2013, the couple asked that donations be made to CHKD in lieu of wedding gifts, and Molly began to accompany David during his regular visits with the children. “He is amazing with kids – that’s one of the things I’ve always admired about him,” says Molly, who shares David’s commitment to CHKD. “He genuinely cares about the children at CHKD. And since I’ve joined him, I completely understand why he feels so strongly about giving back to the hospital.” This year, David and Molly celebrated a benchmark when the seventh annual David Wright Vegas Night fundraiser achieved record-breaking attendance, bringing the cumulative proceeds from the annual event to more than $1.1 million. “We truly appreciate everyone’s enthusiasm for this event each year and are humbled by the generosity of our community,” says David. The couple enjoyed an exciting personal milestone last year when they became parents to daughter Olivia Shea. “Now that we’re parents, we have a whole new understanding of just how important it is to have access to excellent healthcare resources for children,” says Molly. “We are so grateful for the opportunity to help local children and do our part for CHKD.”

Reaching out to inspire support
Bobby Lawrence understands that by supporting CHKD, his gift benefits the entire community.
“I want to do whatever I can to help CHKD continue to provide care and services to kids when they need it.” – Bobby Lawrence
B
obby Lawrence, a Norfolk native and longtime real estate agent with Howard Hanna William E. Wood Real Estate Services, made his first gift to CHKD more than a decade ago. He was inspired when a particularly moving story about a young patient caught his attention during the hospital’s annual Radiothon. “Even though I don’t have any children of my own, I have always had a soft spot for kids, and I remember how listening to that story really touched my heart,” says Bobby. “Before I realized it, I had picked up the phone and made a donation.” Since his first contribution, Bobby has been a committed supporter of CHKD. Over the years, he has attended various events and participated in fundraisers to benefit the hospital. He also included CHKD in his will to help ensure children will receive the care they need for many generations to come. “The work that CHKD does is amazing,” says Bobby. “I know many families whose children have received life-changing care here, and I want to do whatever I can to help CHKD continue to provide care and services to kids when they need it.”
Last year, during CHKD’s annual Radiothon, Bobby’s efforts came full circle when he reached out to inspire support from his network of colleagues and clients. “It was a little intimidating making that first call, but it was easy for me to advocate for such a great cause,” says Bobby. Through his own calling efforts and the generosity of those he reached, Bobby raised more than $12,000 for the kids at CHKD in less than one day during last year’s Radiothon. “It quickly became clear that the people in this community are happy to support CHKD.” Bobby believes that his investment in CHKD is an investment in the health and future of the community. “My career has enabled me to do a lot of things in my life, and I believe it is important to give back,” says Bobby. “In my opinion, there is no better organization to give to than CHKD. It feels good knowing that my support goes towards something that benefits the entire community.”

In honor of a giving heart
Trudy Hoff (center), founder of RE/MAX Alliance, and daughter Kathleen (right) visit a playroom at CHKD along with Traci Lewis VanCamp (left), who has been coordinating the company’s annual toy drive for more than a decade.
“We have had many clients and team members whose families needed CHKD over the years, so this is a very personal cause for the entire company.” – Trudy Hoff
F
or Trudy and Mick Hoff, supporting CHKD was a revered holiday tradition shared with their family business. When Mick passed away, Trudy and daughter Kathleen found a way to honor his memory and keep his generous spirit alive through an endowed gift to help the children at CHKD. Mick Hoff was a devoted husband, loving father and Navy captain. When he retired from the service after 27 years, Mick and Trudy settled in Virginia Beach and established RE/MAX Alliance, to serve the Hampton Roads area. They wanted to use their experience as a military family to help others relocating to the region. To give back to the local community, RE/MAX Alliance began making a donation from each home sale to support CHKD. Inspired to do more, Mick and Trudy also started a company toy drive to benefit the kids and families at the hospital during the holidays. Mick dressed as Santa Claus and brought the RE/MAX Alliance team to the hospital to deliver gifts. “Mick would begin to grow his beard in September – because a fake one just wouldn’t do,” Trudy recalls. “It was so important to him to bring a 24

smile to every child, sibling and family member in the hospital. It became a true expression of his heart.” When Mick passed away in 2013, the team at RE/MAX Alliance carried on his traditional visit to CHKD each December. To further Mick’s legacy, Trudy and Kathleen established the first endowment specifically for the child life department at CHKD. “For Dad, helping kids be kids—even when they were in the hospital—was the ultimate goal. So a gift to support the child life department, which works every day to do just that, is the perfect tribute,” says Kathleen. With over 35 years of experience helping families settle in Hampton Roads, Trudy recognizes the value of CHKD to the community and the importance of supporting the hospital. “We are very fortunate to have a children’s hospital in our community,” says Trudy. “We have had many clients and team members whose families needed CHKD over the years, so this is a very personal cause for the entire company. I know Mick would want to continue to support CHKD in any way he could, and this endowment is a great way to do just that.”

Philanthropy Matters | Donor Event
GENEROUS HEARTS Celebrating those who support Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters
CHKD hosted two events this spring to honor members of the Beth Duke Legacy Society and those donors who gave an annual contribution of $1,000 or more. The groups gathered at the James River Country Club in Newport News and the Town Point Club in Norfolk. During each celebration, patient families shared personal stories about how donor-supported services and care made a profound difference for their children in the neonatal intensive care unit at CHKD.
