Three-year-old Zachary Doyle, of Newport News, could barely contain his excitement when Elmo came to visit CHKD. Zachary, who has spina bifida, was completing a five-week stay in the hospital’s inpatient rehabilitation unit. “When we arrived, Zachary couldn’t move,” says his mother, Susan Doyle. “By the time we left, he was pulling to stand, crawling, scooting, and walking in a gait trainer. The staff members in the rehab unit are phenomenal. Seeing Elmo before we headed home was icing on the cake!”

athan Freeman is not shy about introducing himself. “Hi, I’m Eathan, also known as Spider-Man!” The 8-year-old Portsmouth boy recently strolled confidently down the hall at CHKD, gave a hug to a child life specialist, and stopped to chat with nurses. He took a moment to show off his muscles by flexing his biceps. If Eathan acts like he owns the place, there’s a reason. He spent a month here as a baby to have surgery to treat a cyst in his brain and another month last September for repair of a shunt that takes fluid from his brain to his belly. That’s when he earned a superhero title – “Eathan the Brave” – from nurses and child life specialists who introduced him to CHKD’s facility dog, SaraLee. “Come on, SaraLee, come dance with me,” he said when he saw the sandy-haired dog in the hallway. “She took good care of me,” he explained. “She helped me walk by getting me out of bed.” Eathan’s story with CHKD began before he was born. That’s when Katrinia Freeman, his mother, had an ultrasound that showed Eathan had a cyst – a sac filled with fluid – in his brain. It was causing a buildup of the fluid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord. The condition is called hydrocephalus, and the pressure can cause headaches, vision problems, confusion, developmental delays, and difficulty walking. Katrinia was referred to Dr. John Birknes, a pediatric neurosurgeon at CHKD. He showed Katrinia and Eathan’s father, Sean Nash, a model of a brain to point out where the cyst was located, the various options to treat it, and the range of possible results. The cyst continued to grow, and not long after that, Katrinia had an emergency Cesarean section to deliver Eathan, who was immediately transferred to CHKD. When Katrinia was wheeled from Sentara Norfolk General Hospital to CHKD to see Eathan, the first person she saw was Dr. Birknes. She felt a sense of relief. SUMMER 2019

“He’s always been there for us.” The cyst caused Eathan’s head to be larger than a normal baby’s, and his eyes bulged out a little and seemed to dart around. “But he was beautiful,” Katrinia remembers, “He had a head full of hair, and he was my baby.” Dr. Birknes and his team performed surgery to drain the cyst, and later inserted a catheter to drain fluid from the brain to a shunt that would carry it past his ear, across his collarbone, to his belly where the fluid would be absorbed into the bloodstream. Dr. Birknes said his philosophy is to explain a condition honestly, simply, fully, and in the way he’d want to be told if this were his child. “I would want to know what the truth is,” Dr. Birknes said. “I don’t want it watered down or sugar-coated. I’ll even tell them, ‘I’m telling you what I’d want to be told. If it’s not a good message, it’s not because I don’t care, it’s because I’m being honest.’ ” Eathan spent a month recovering and growing in the NICU, during which time CHKD nurses, therapists, chaplains, social workers, and child life specialists gathered around to support Eathan and his family. For instance, before his brothers, Gabriel and Julian, saw Eathan for the first time, a NICU nurse prepared them by saying that Eathan looked different from other babies, and he was in a unit with other special babies who had tubes and monitors all around them. “So … he’s like a superhero?” his brother asked. The cyst and fluid buildup came with other diagnoses for Eathan – a seizure disorder, a hormone deficiency, and vision problems. After discharge, he’d need physical therapy, occupational therapy, and monitoring of the shunt by neurology specialists, along with regular visits to his endocrinologist and his pediatrician. Case managers with CHKD’s Care Connection for Children would help manage those appointments.
It wasn’t long before the best part of his development surfaced – his personality. “He’s so outgoing,” Katrinia said. “He’s always been strong. He’s like a little adult. Full of life. Always a fighter. He’s my bundle of joy.” That’s why she knew something was wrong last September when Eathan’s outgoing personality faded. He was tired and sleepy. He had headaches. He lost his appetite. “When he was awake, he was in tears, saying that he was in pain,” Katrinia said. He was admitted to CHKD. The first time child life manager Shannon Hood saw him he was sleeping with the lights off. She came in hoping to get Eathan up and walking. His doctor and healthcare providers wanted to check his balance and mobility to help figure out whether he needed surgery to fix the shunt that had been inserted in his brain. Hood couldn’t get any response from Eathan, so she asked his mom, “Does he like dogs?” Before Katrinia said anything, Hood had her answer: Eathan opened his eyes. Hood said she’d bring CHKD’s facility dog, SaraLee, to his bedside, and he could pet her. And, if he got out of bed, he could even walk her. The deal was struck, and Eathan’s signature heartwarming smile surfaced again. He sat up on the edge of his bed, rubbed the dog’s soft ears. He stood up, and walked by SaraLee’s side. That assessment along with other tests showed signs of a shunt malfunction. “Mom, I’m sorry to say we’re going to need to do surgery to see what’s going on,” Dr. Birknes said. “You have never steered us wrong,” Katrinia said. Sure enough, the catheter in the brain was clogged, which would take additional surgery to repair. Throw into that equation this quandary: Eathan’s birthday was coming up. SUMMER 2019
7
No one wants to spend their birthday in the hospital, and for that reason, child life specialists keep track of patient birthdays, talk with parents, and make sure there’s a celebration crafted to the child’s favorite things. In Eathan’s case, superheroes immediately came to mind. Spider-Man and Captain America superheroes showed up in their full regalia on his special day to wish Eathan a happy birthday. Local companies donated superhero toys, a bouquet of balloons, trinkets, and superhero posters. Twisted Sisters Cupcakes created a cake in the shape of a character from one of Eathan’s favorite shows, the PAW Patrol. “I ate his whole entire nose,” Eathan remembers. Eathan stayed in the pediatric intensive care unit after his surgeries, then returned to the 7th floor for further recovery. Hood would put the dog between the two of them – she calls it a “SaraLee sandwich” – to walk around the rehab unit. “OK, we’re going to walk super confidently,” she’d say. “Walk with purpose. Relax your hands. Look straight ahead.” Soon, Eathan left behind a wheelchair, then a walker. His impish smile and upbeat attitude returned. Today, Katrinia credits Dr. Birknes with saving Eathan’s life, and the entire CHKD village with lifting his spirits and restoring his spunk. “He’s a funny guy,” Eathan said of Dr. Birknes. “He tells me knock-knock jokes.” Dr. Birknes also has been known to break into song to distract Eathan from a procedure that might be uncomfortable. Katrinia has a video in which she captured Dr. Birknes belting out a song. Eathan yells, “Stop singing!” but laughs in spite of himself. In turn, Dr. Birknes appreciates Eathan’s spirit: “There’s absolutely nothing that takes away from his personality.”

Surgery Program Earns Elite Status CHKD named Level I Children’s Surgery Center
When it comes to children, there’s no such thing as minor surgery. Whether it’s an outpatient ear, nose, and throat procedure or major craniofacial reconstruction, safety dominates every surgical decision from start to finish at Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters. That’s one reason why the American College of Surgeons (ACS) recently gave CHKD its highest level of certification for pediatric surgical care. The certification makes CHKD one of 15 pediatric surgical centers nationwide – and one of five in the East Coast region – to attain Level 1 Children’s Surgery Verification from the ACS, an organization dedicated to raising the standards of surgical care in the United States. “We’re extremely proud to achieve this recognition,” says Dr. Robert Kelly, chief of surgery at CHKD. “It verifies, independently, that we do surgery as well as other top children’s hospitals in the country.” To receive this prestigious certification, the hospital’s surgical program, which includes the main hospital in Norfolk and surgery centers at Concert Drive in Virginia Beach and Oyster Point in Newport News, met rigorous criteria for staffing, training, facility features, and protocols for care. CHKD began the application process three years ago after Dr. Craig Derkay, a pediatric otolaryngologist at CHKD and a lead site surveyor for the ACS children’s surgical verification executive steering committee, recommended the hospital apply for the recognition. In addition to a lengthy application, the verification required a site visit by a team comprised of a pediatric surgeon, pediatric anesthesiologist, and pediatric nursing leader. The ACS team identified several strengths during its certification process. Reviewers were especially impressed with the collaborative leadership between surgeons and administrators, the hospital’s culture of safety, and its international leadership in treating chest wall deformities. “Most notably, there is a strong level of commitment to providing high quality and safe surgical care to children,” the reviewers wrote in their assessment. Much of what allows CHKD to provide exceptional surgical care occurs behind the scenes in the way surgical staff members collaborate with each other and specialists throughout the hospital. For instance, surgeons now serve as co-directors in the NICU and PICU, bolstering those units’ direct access to surgical experts. Another example is the commitment by surgical staff members to constantly assess their performance to look for ways to improve. A surgical performance improvement committee works continuously to develop better medical practices and protocols and improve outcomes. “The Level I verification is a noteworthy achievement for our surgical program,” says Dr. Kelly. “It’s also a reflection of the full commitment of every partner on the team, and a testament to the high level of care we provide to children throughout the region.” 10

Chest wall surgery restores stamina, helps teen achieve goal to play Division I soccer her childhood, Madeline Allburn remembers picking out looseT hroughout fitting clothes so that no one could see the way her lower ribs stuck out.
As she entered her pre-teen years, the flare of her ribs became more pronounced, especially on her right side. She couldn’t lie on her stomach comfortably. In her soccer uniform, her ribs stayed hidden. She could forget about them unless another player knocked into her, which would hurt. Her mother, Lauren Allburn, remembers the heartache of watching her daughter struggle with the way she looked. “When Madeline would wear a bathing suit, her ribs would noticeably protrude,” Lauren says. “She felt very self-conscious.” To the Allburns, Madeline’s rib flare was more than a cosmetic issue. They worried about the psychological toll it was taking on their 12-year old daughter. Fortunately, a close friend of the family – a pediatric surgeon practicing outside the region – and Madeline’s own pediatrician, Dr. Kristina Powell, of Pediatric Associates of Williamsburg, were both aware that the premier center for pediatric chest wall treatment was right around the corner at CHKD. They referred the family to CHKD surgeon, Dr. Frazier Frantz, who recommended monitoring Madeline with periodic visits as she grew. Unbeknownst to the Allburns, this was the beginning of a medical journey that not only revealed a serious chest wall defect in Madeline, but also in her sister, Clare. The sisters are sharing their experience to give hope to other young girls who have a chest wall deformity. Madeline had pectus excavatum – a condition where the sternum and rib cage grow abnormally, giving the appearance of a sunken chest. It’s much more common among boys than girls. It can show up at birth or develop during puberty, becoming more severe with growth spurts. In serious cases, the depression of the chest wall can crowd the heart and lungs. A child with pectus excavatum may have chest pain, tire easily, and have a hard time breathing during exercise. 12

During an exam when she was 14, Dr. Frantz determined that Madeline would need surgery. In addition to the rib flare, her sternum was starting to cave in. The Allburns were stunned. “Her sternum was getting close to the point of pushing on her lungs and heart,” says her father, Sean Allburn. The surgery would have to be scheduled soon, because the older Madeline got, the harder it would be to reconstruct her chest wall. During a breath test, the Allburns realized how serious the situation had become. Their daughter wasn’t using her lungs to full capacity. It explained why the star athlete would sometimes tire more quickly than her teammates. Dr. Frantz and the Allburns came up with a plan to minimize the surgery’s impact on Madeline’s blossoming soccer career. Several colleges were already recruiting her. If they timed it right, Madeline could be back on the field in time for the spring season of her freshman year. Like many parents whose child faces surgery, the Allburns started researching any information they could find about their daughter’s condition. It was then they realized that CHKD attracts patients with chest wall deformities from all over the world. The hospital is home to the Nuss Center, named after Dr. Donald Nuss, a CHKD pediatric surgeon who revolutionized the field of chest wall reconstruction when he invented a minimally invasive surgery for pectus excavatum. During the Nuss Procedure, as it’s now referred to worldwide, a curved metal bar is inserted under the ribs and sternum through small incisions on each side of the chest. Once in place, it’s rotated 180 degrees to push out the sternum. “It creates a space where the heart should have been,” Dr. Frantz says. “The heart moves back to its proper position.” The bar stays in place until the new chest wall shape becomes permanent. The procedure works best on young patients because their bone structure is still flexible. Following the success of the Nuss Procedure, CHKD became an international center of research and innovation for chest wall deformities, providing many therapeutic options for patients such as Madeline, who required a different surgical technique to correct her condition. The family met with Dr. Frantz who explained that to fix Madeline’s chest deformity, he would need to put a crack in her sternum. A metal plate and screws would permanently keep it in position. He would also remove portions of ribs from both sides to address the flare. Dr. Frantz detailed how Madeline’s surgery would proceed. He answered every question they had. “We knew we were in an outstanding facility,” Lauren says. “But we didn’t realize that the surgeons here are the best of the best at this type of surgery.” Knowing that Dr. Frantz has performed hundreds of chest wall reconstruction surgeries gave the Allburns a great sense of comfort. “Dr. Frantz won our confidence so fast,” Lauren says. “He put us at ease with his kindness.” The Allburns braced themselves for the surgery. “Madeline was very scared,” Lauren recalls. “We just kept telling her it will be over soon, and you’ll be able to breathe better. It will look better, too.”
Dr. Donald Nuss
The Nuss Center at CHKD CHKD is home to the Nuss Center, where a world-renowned team and a state-ofthe-art clinic are devoted exclusively to the evaluation and treatment of chest wall conditions in children and young adults. The center is named for CHKD’s retired surgeon-in-chief, Dr. Donald Nuss, a pioneer in the treatment of chest wall deformities. While serving at CHKD, Dr. Nuss developed the minimally invasive Nuss Procedure for the correction of pectus excavatum, or sunken chest, which has become the worldwide treatment of choice for this condition. Since the development of the Nuss Procedure, CHKD surgeons have continued to innovate with additional surgical and non-surgical techniques for the treatment of a multitude of chest wall issues, including pectus excavatum, pectus carinatum, Currarino-Silverman syndrome, Poland syndrome, rib flaring, and more.

“From start to finish, the staff at CHKD was phenomenal. They were amazing. I can’t say enough about them.” – Lauren Allburn, Madeline’s mom
Lauren watched her daughter head off to surgery. When she was finally alone, the stress overcame her. Lauren sobbed so hard she could barely catch her breath. Dr. Frantz told them the surgery would take roughly two to three hours. It ended up lasting closer to six. The surgical team kept the Allburns updated throughout the procedure. “At one time, even Dr. Frantz got on the phone with us,” Lauren remembers. When the surgery was over, the family was relieved to hear that Madeline’s repair looked great. “From start to finish, the staff at CHKD was phenomenal,” Lauren says. “They were amazing. I can’t say enough about them.” After five days in the hospital, Madeline was discharged to complete her recovery at home in Williamsburg. The first week was rough. She had to sleep in an upright position. She wasn’t allowed to reposition her body on her own. Lauren dug out an old baby monitor from when the girls were little, so she would know if Madeline ever needed anything. “For about a month, life was very uncomfortable,” Madeline recalls. Like many athletes, the hardest part of recovery was waiting to be cleared for activity. Initially, she was only allowed to work out in the weight room to strengthen her lower body. But, within three months of the surgery, she was back on the soccer field. “Except for two tiny scars, it looks like I never had anything wrong with me,” Madeline says. “It’s crazy how much better I felt afterwards. Dr. Frantz really is the best.” With Madeline’s recovery complete, the Allburns turned their focus to Clare, who, at age 12, was also showing signs of a sunken chest and rib flare. Fortunately, she did not require surgery. Instead, Clare could benefit from another treatment innovation offered at the Nuss Center – a vacuum bell device, which sits on the chest and uses suction to slowly pull the sternum into proper position.
Again, the Allburns felt overwhelmed with gratitude. “Sean and I often reflect how unbelievable it is that we live so close to CHKD, which was the only hospital using the device at that time,” Lauren says. “It’s a miracle.” Clare used the vacuum bell for more than a year. She was embarrassed at first and didn’t like wearing it in front of people. It also was challenging with her school and soccer schedules, but Clare made sure to use the device for the recommended amount of time each day. As the months passed, her sternum flattened until she no longer had any depression to her chest. “When I got the bell at first, I thought it was a really big deal,” Clare says. “But it’s not at all. It’s temporary and prevented me from needing surgery.” Today, both girls are healthy and thriving on the soccer field. Madeline carries a medical card that says she has metal inside. Her family likes to joke that she’s Iron Man, her favorite Marvel character. This fall, she will head to Wake Forest University where she will play Division I soccer. Clare continues to sharpen her soccer skills with hopes of also playing at the collegiate level. “We’re at a point now where we’re just incredibly grateful that both kids have gotten past a pretty notable health issue,” Sean says. “We just realize how thankful and lucky we are. We owe it all to Dr. Frantz and CHKD.”

Image Gently “It’s not about getting the quickest answer, but the safest.” – Dr. Neil Vachhani, medical director of radiology at CHKD
WRITTEN BY Elizabeth Simpson Earley • PHOTOGRAPH BY Susan Lowe
Safety measures protect young patients Step into the radiology department at CHKD, and the “kid-centric” nature of the place pops up immediately. The X-ray shields that protect children come with purple sparkles, for instance, and a new low-dose digital X-ray machine features a cheerful turtle cavorting with smiling sea creatures. That’s what meets the eye, but it’s what you can’t see – an “image gently” philosophy – that raises the standard of care at CHKD and its outpatient locations. That philosophy is built with years of education, training, and expertise from a team that is uniquely poised to treat children – from the doctors who order the scans to the technologists who operate the imaging equipment to the pediatric radiologists who read the images. “It’s not a cookie-cutter approach at all,” said Dr. Neil Vachhani, medical director of radiology at CHKD. “We tailor each scan specifically to the child. One of our principles is to determine how we can avoid or minimize the exposure to radiation and still address the concern of the patient and clinician.” That takes into consideration an array of factors. What is the age and size of the child? What part of the body is being examined? Does the child have an acute injury or a chronic condition that’s likely to need a lifetime of monitoring? Dr. Christopher Foley, chief of medicine at CHKD, says the extra years of training required of a pediatric radiologist helps them distinguish subtle changes that are normal in a developing body from abnormalities that signal disease. “If pediatric scans are all you look at every day, you get very good at it,” Foley says. “And ensuring everything is done right the first time means there’s no need to repeat it. This limits radiation and unnecessary tests and ensures accurate results that are correctly interpreted.” Vachhani said choosing the proper “modality” – ultrasound, MRI, X-ray – is key when imaging children. There are situations where a non-radiation option, such as ultrasound, is best. An MRI also doesn’t use radiation, but requires a patient to lie still over time, so children may need to be sedated. At CHKD, a pediatric sedation team oversees that process, including child life specialists who can calm anxious children. Providing safe sedation for children is an essential part of getting the best images. The equipment itself also makes a difference. CHKD recently purchased six new mobile imaging machines that use up to 50 percent less radiation and also provide a higher quality scan. Over the years, exposure to radiation has become a prime concern to pediatric specialists, who follow strict guidelines in ordering a scan in the first place, according to Foley: “For small children, you need a different threshold. You want to be sure to order only the tests that are necessary, and you need to consider lifetime exposure.” That premise guides CHKD specialists every step of the way, Vachhani says: “It’s not about getting the quickest answer, but the safest.” SUMMER 2019

t 6 weeks old, Alex Doan was facing surgery to repair a cleft lip. His mother, Dana, and father, Lucas, worried more about putting their infant son under anesthesia than about the tiny sutures that would close the small gap in Alex’s lip. The Norfolk family came to Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters to meet with Dr. George Hoerr, a pediatric plastic surgeon in CHKD’s Craniofacial Center. Dr. Hoerr quickly put the Doans at ease as he told them about CHKD’s expert pediatric anesthesiology team. “He told us they were top notch,” Dana remembers. “And, this is what they do, every day.“ CHKD could not provide the level of care and surgical expertise to children like Alex without the generous support of our donors. For this reason, we recognize those who have contributed $500 or more during the year in our annual Honor Roll. The support and commitment of these individuals and organizations gives kids the best chance of continuing to grow, play, and learn as they navigate life with severe illnesses and recover from traumatic injuries. “We are so thankful that CHKD is here in our backyard,” Dana says. “Dr. Hoerr and his team gave us a level of care beyond our expectations.” During Alex’s surgery, a nurse came out to the waiting room to keep the Doans constantly updated. When they saw Alex after surgery, they couldn’t believe how well his lip had come together. Today, Alex is a healthy toddler who loves to head outdoors to the park and play with his toy cars. The scar on his lip is barely noticeable. His mom admits she forgets it’s even there. On behalf of Alex and his family – and the thousands of children in our community who need CHKD – we thank you. 20

Virginia Fall Classic Rolls Toward Major Milestone
Jay Laros, of Gloucester, and Sam Harper, of Newport News, are among several volunteers who organize the annual fundraiser.
“ We love the fact that at CHKD, no child is turned away.” – Hal Hartel, event co-founder
J
ay Laros remembers every detail of the day his son, Tyler, almost died on a family camping trip 21 years ago. His voice quavers as he recalls trying to keep the 8-year-old conscious on the frantic drive to a nearby hospital in rural Tappahannock. Tyler was suffering from diabetic ketoacidosis – a life-threatening condition that is often the first sign of Type 1 diabetes. He was quickly sent by ambulance to CHKD, where he would spend four days getting the specialized care he needed. “Without a doubt, I would not have my son without CHKD,” Laros says. It’s a story Laros shares every year during the Virginia Fall Classic – a fundraiser to benefit CHKD. Laros, who serves as chair of the event, also emcees the awards presentation at the event’s car, truck, and bike show. This October will mark the 17th year of the Virginia Fall Classic, which has raised a total of $489,000 to support services provided at the CHKD Health and Surgery Center at Oyster Point. Organizers hope to surpass the $500,000 mark this fall. Over the years, the fundraiser has created a community of devoted volunteers from the Virginia Peninsula Car Club Council, Classic Cruisers Car Club, the City of Newport News, Ferguson Enterprises, and more.

“It’s unreal the number of people involved whose children have needed CHKD over the years,” says Hal Hartel, one of the event’s co-founders. Hartel and Wayne Smith, a retired lieutenant from the Newport News Police Department, started the fundraiser out of a desire to help children. “We love the fact that at CHKD, no child is turned away.” says Hartel, who still attends the event even though he now lives in South Carolina. This year, the three-day event, held October 25 to 27, will kick off on Friday night with a “Kasual Kruz-in” that includes trunk-or-treating, food vendors, and a children’s costume competition in the parking lot of Ferguson Enterprises on Jefferson Avenue. On Saturday, attendees will enjoy a car, truck, and bike show in Newport News Park. In years past, up to 700 cars of all makes, models, and years were on display. Families can also enjoy live music and a police K9 demonstration. The festivities will conclude on Sunday with a poker run. The course takes players on a picturesque tour of fall scenery. “We’re hoping for a great turnout this year,” Laros says. “We’re excited to reach the half-million mark and continue our support for CHKD.” Visit VaFallClassic.org for more information.

From the Front Row
Julie Childress Beck, president of The King’s Daughters, experienced CHKD from a new perspective when her granddaughter Aela was rushed to the hospital.
A personal story from Julie Childress Beck, president of The King’s Daughters
M
uch of what I do as president of The King’s Daughters takes place in meeting rooms and fundraisers and events to support Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters. As a long-time member of the board, I’ve given my share of tours at CHKD, taking visitors to the NICU where tiny babies are hooked up to monitors and machines that help them breathe. The mission of my volunteer work has always been clear, just as it was for my mother, who passed along the legacy of volunteering for The King’s Daughters. But there’s nothing that drives home the meaning of that work quite like this: Watching my own 9-month-old granddaughter struggle to breathe. It began with a simple cold. One January night, Aela started wheezing, getting more fitful by the minute. Her tiny chest sunk in with every breath. She was gasping and wailing. My son-in-law called 911, and the ambulance took her to the nearest emergency room. Doctors there called the CHKD transport team to take her to CHKD. Ironically, just months before, I helped dedicate one of the transport units that The King’s Daughters raised funds to purchase. Now my precious granddaughter was reaping the fruits of our efforts. Aela first was treated by the transport team’s paramedic, nurse, and respiratory therapist, then the CHKD emergency

department staff took over to stabilize her further. After that, it was off to the pediatric intensive care unit. That’s where I caught up with her. Oxygen and air were flowing through tiny tubes inserted in her nose. Sensors on her chest were monitoring her vital signs. Steroids were being delivered through an IV bag. Instead of her usual cheerful self, she was miserable. But she was breathing. She was stable. She was in good hands. Seeing the hospital from this vantage point, though sobering, was also affirming. There was the attentiveness of the nurses to Aela and the whole family. The kindness of the chaplain. The equipment perfectly suited for babies. The calm assurance of the pediatric specialists. We are so fortunate to have this hospital where a baby can go from struggling to resting easy in a matter of hours. It was also eye-opening to see other families in the unit, holding vigil over children hooked up to tubes and machines. You don’t see that kind of medical action at a fundraising event, or walking down the hallway to give a tour through CHKD’s cheerful lobby. But I know it now in a way I didn’t before, from the front row with family members of children they love. As I go forward, I will keep the faces of the children and families of the PICU and throughout the hospital in mind as we work to keep CHKD strong. ~ Julie Childress Beck

Volunteers
Honoring CHKD Volunteers In 2018, CHKD was fortunate to have the support of 766 dedicated volunteers who contributed 31,762 volunteer hours in support of our children. The estimated monetary equivalent of their donation of time to CHKD was an astounding $849,634 (calculated using the 2017 Independent Sector average hourly value of volunteer time in Virginia). The Buddy Brigade pet therapy program continues to be a favorite among patients, providing more than 12,600 handshakes, hugs, and cuddles with patients and visitors last year. This program allows certified pet therapy dogs to comfort patients in the hospital and the child abuse program. Interested donors can support both CHKD and the Buddy Brigade by making a donation through the Adopt A Buddy program at CHKD.org/AdoptABuddy. CHKD boasts one of Virginia’s largest hospital teen volunteer programs. Last summer 227 high school students volunteered at CHKD through the junior volunteer program. Program information is available on CHKD.org/JrVolunteer and the CHKD Junior Volunteer Facebook page. Many volunteers reached milestone award levels in 2018. We extend our special appreciation to everyone who donated time to help the kids. We invite interested individuals to visit us at CHKD.org/Volunteer for information about becoming a volunteer.

Dedicate your next event, birthday, holiday, or special occasion to local kids at CHKD. Your support helps improve the lives of children in our community.
Get creative. With Team CHKD’s online fundraising program, the opportunities are endless. Donate your birthday, create a fundraising page in honor of a loved one, or fundraise on a larger scale by organizing a charity race or sports tournament for CHKD. Set goals. Decide how much you want to raise. Set a deadline to achieve your goal and create a sense of urgency. Write a list of supporters. Reach out directly to friends, family, neighbors, colleagues, and acquaintances. Invite people to contribute a gift or participate in your event. If they donate, make sure to express your appreciation. Showing gratitude can encourage continued support.

Make it personal. Whether you’re sharing on social media, by email, text, or phone, explain why you’re asking for support. Form a team. Several people working toward a goal will raise money faster than fundraising alone. Recruit family and friends to share on social media. Stay organized. Make sure you follow up and send reminders to your supporters. Let them know that their donations are tax-deductible. And, be sure to keep track of all donations.

Philanthropy Matters | Making a Difference
Making a Difference Individuals, businesses, and organizations throughout the community hold campaigns to support the children at CHKD. Here’s a look at some of our all-star supporters.
David Wright, former captain of the New York Mets, poses with creatively dressed guests (from left) Corey Doe, Mark Epley, and John Proctor at the 9th Annual Wright Night. This Vegas-style fundraiser, hosted by Wright, raised $180,000 this year, bringing its cumulative total to $1.5 million. The date for next year’s 10th anniversary event is January 17, 2020.
Love Run to benefit CHKD is an annual 5K race held by students at Princess Anne and Cox high schools in Virginia Beach. The event raised $14,500 this year, bringing their 15-year cumulative total to $90,000. Pictured here are organizers Ben Werve of Cox High School (left) and Cuda Zmuda of Princess Anne High School (right) presenting a check to Susan Carriker of CHKD.
Finley Hooker-Tidwell, pictured here with Kate Ryan of CHKD, visited the hospital to deliver a donation from her 13th annual Party with a Purpose. Finley suffered a stroke at 3 days old and was rushed to CHKD. Each year on her birthday, Finley asks friends and family to make a donation to CHKD instead of bringing her gifts. She has raised more than $17,000 over the years.

ECPI donated 50 iPads and cases to CHKD to be used for patient experience projects, translation services, and in the child abuse program. Pictured here (L to R) are Barbara Larar and Andrea Lipsmeyer of ECPI, with Lauren Kiger and Kamil Cak of CHKD.
CHKD received a $10,000 grant from Huggies’ “No Baby Unhugged” initiative to support its volunteer cuddler program. Pictured here is Dale Pearson, who has been providing comfort to babies in the CHKD NICU for 15 years. The extra hugs from these cuddlers help NICU babies develop and grow. The Huggies grant will be used to buy recliner chairs and footstools and fund volunteer expenses.
CHKD recently hosted a Miracle Makers party at Norfolk Waterside to honor individuals and businesses who participate in fundraising efforts to benefit CHKD through Children’s Miracle Network. Pictured here (left to right) are CHKD mom, Genene Milligan; Dan Kennedy of WVEC/13News Now; CHKD patient, Tymiere Grayson; Mike Powers of 94.9 The Point; Ashley Smith of WVEC/13News Now; Lauren Kiger of CHKD; and Mary Kathryn “Woo Woo” Wood of 94.9 The Point.
Matt Fanghella, a member of CHKD’s Future Generations Board, brought 30 riders together at Tidal Wheel’s new Virginia Beach location to spin for the kids. They raised $725 during their ride. To host your own fundraiser for CHKD, visit TeamCHKD.org.
The Sassy Snappers of Portsmouth, pictured here with Kate Ryan of CHKD, are a local chapter of the Red Hat Society. These ladies raise funds throughout the year through group outings and other activities to present a check to the hospital each December. This year’s donation brought their total raised since 2004 to more than $40,000.
