Happy New Year. With the Christmas period well and truly behind us the opportunity of a fresh start that January offers is very much under way. As with many up and down the country, the New Year begins with a new resolution, in which a person resolves to change an undesirable trait or behaviour, to accomplish a personal goal or otherwise improve their life. This tends to be channelled towards a healthier lifestyle by either eating more greens or dusting off the gym membership. And with health and wellbeing at the forefront of people’s minds, not just on a personal level, businesses have also started to adopt this mindset in an effort to become more sustainable — especially in our industry. 2018 saw many designers, manufacturers and retailers look into how their business can be more environmentally friendly. It was pleasing to report on numerous stories that embraced this culture and it’s a trend that will certainly gather pace during the year ahead. One particular trend that is set for change is the use of plastic. Did you know that nine in 10 people in the UK now use ‘bags for life’ when shopping — and while this is a positive step in the right direction, it isn’t enough to tackle the estimated 12.7 million metric tonnes of plastic dumped into the ocean every year. Mike Murray, managing director at Land of Beds, is trying to change the way mattresses are packaged and is working tirelessly with partners to develop environmentally-friendly products; however, he says around 90% of mattresses are still delivered in huge plastic

bags. It’s not just mattresses either. If you think of every piece of delivered furniture or carpet, there are elements of plastic throughout. Even if its just the small plastic bag that contains the screws and washers! The challenge in how products are packaged should be one that moves closer to the top of the agenda during 2019. There are businesses out there that are already making ground in this new arena. Austrian flooring supplier Danzer recently announced a new initiative to reduce plastic packaging. The company has changed over to oxo-biodegradable packaging, which is made from recycled plastics and breaks down under exposure to ultraviolet light in around two years, for a significant portion of its products. Perhaps this is something that can be adopted elsewhere in the industry? There are companies that are getting set to unveil their sustainable, recyclable and compostable alternatives to plastic during 2019 and Mike expects this growth to ‘explode’ during the year. Exploring new ways to become a sustainable business is one New Year’s resolution worth committing to, as Mike concludes: “If you can buy fresh meat and get it home safely for human consumption without plastic wrapping, then surely we can do the same!” What do you think?

NEWS IN BRIEF TAX FRAUD

The owner behind Norton Carpet Centre has been given a suspended prison sentence after pleading guilty to tax fraud. Rockwell Adams Senior admitted income tax evasion at Teesside Crown Court, where he declared £54,000 from income of £178,000. Mr Adams’ son, Rockwell Adams Junior, also pleaded guilty to the same charge, only declaring £44,000 from income of £173,000. They were sentenced to 18 months in prison, suspended for two years.

Product recall

IKEA has issued a product recall on its GLIVARP extendable table after receiving reports of the extension leaf detaching from the rails and falling, which may lead to the extension leaf collapsing. This has resulted in isolated reports of leg and foot injuries. IKEA added that customers are asked to stop using the product and return it to an IKEA store for a full refund.

AIS preparation

Furnishings manufacturer Nathan Furniture has confirmed it will launch four new collections during the AIS Show. These include its new Palma collections (dining & living, bedroom), as well as a new bedroom extension to the Somerdale range by its Charltons brand, and a further selection of colours in its painted dining range.

Mattress brand appoints new marketing lead

Debut TV ad

Bed manufacturer Harrison Spinks has launched its first ever TV ad as part of a multimillion-pound consumer marketing campaign. The 30-second TV spot follows the journey of a Harrison Spinks mattress, from farm to factory, alongside one of the company’s handreared sheep. The campaign runs until June 2019 and is aimed to drive brand awareness and support commercial growth for the £57m-turnover bedmaker.

FURNITURE PRICE RISE

According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS) Consumer Prices Index (CPI) for November 2018, the total furniture price rate increased by 0.1% on last month, whilst rising by 0.8% from 2017. Floorcovering prices also increased on an annual and monthly comparison, up by 0.8% and 1% respectively. Overall, the 12-month UK CPI rate was 2.3% in November, down from 2.4% in October 2018.

New flooring designs

British wood flooring brand Havwoods has introduced six new plank designs to its popular Henley collection. Henley now has over 30 designs and surface finishes, which are catered to suit high footfall areas, where any natural scuffs and dents accumulated over time will only add to the natural look of the boards. The latest designs to join the Henley collection include new Rustic Grade and Fine Aged textured planks.

Boxed mattress brand eve Sleep has announced the appointment of Cheryl Calverley (above) as its new chief marketing officer. Cheryl, who officially joined last month, moved from The Automobile Association (The AA), which she joined in 2015 as head of marketing before progressing to marketing director. Prior to The AA, Cheryl held a number of senior marketing positions for six years at Birds Eye Iglo, culminating in a role as Masterbrand Marketing Manager in 2012, where she oversaw the £21m budget and held creative control of the communications and brand strategy. Before joining Birds Eye Iglo, Cheryl was a marketing manager for Unilever for seven years, working on UK brands such as Marmite and Pot Noodle, then globally on Axe (Lynx). Commenting on the new appointment, James Sturrock, CEO of eve Sleep, said: “With a wealth of consumer brand experience, Cheryl is a natural fit for the business and the delivery of eve’s refocused growth strategy. “Her proven track-record in developing and managing high profile brands will be crucial to further differentiating our brand positioning, enhancing customer experience and helping to achieve our ambition of becoming Europe’s leading sleep and well-being brand.” Cheryl added: “I’m thrilled to be joining the company at this stage in its development. FIRA CONFIRMS 2019 OPEN DAY SCHEDULE FIRA International has released its open day schedule for 2019, confirming three dates. The open days will take place on Thursday 21st February, Thursday 16th May and Thursday 10th October. Sales grow for sixth straight year at furniture retailer

BED MAKER REVEALS FIRST ANNIVERSARY WINNERS

Home furnishings retailer Furniture Village has reported a sixth straight year of turnover growth. According to its latest filed accounts for the year ended 1 April 2018, total sales rose 10% to £262.2m from £238m in 2017. Total order intake rose 9% to £317.6m from £291.9m, which was driven by uplifts in both like-for-like store volumes and online, along with significant increases from new stores. Gross profit also increased by 7% to £122.5m from £114.3m, whilst its pre-tax profit of £1.8m recorded last year fell to a loss of £242,000. Furniture Village said that costs of £1.1m, due to investing in a new ERP System, as well as new store opening costs of £2m, impacted profitability, but only in the short-term. EBITDA resulted at £4.2m for the year, with net cash remaining strong at £15.2m. The company continued to expand its store estate with the opening of two in Chelmsford and Rugby, bringing its total to 52 — an increase of 12 stores over the past few years from 2015. During the year Furniture Village implemented a cost reduction programme ‘Fight the Climate’ to offset the impact of the economic and weather led downturn in trading. Under this initiative, the business identified over £10m of savings. Looking ahead, Furniture Village said that it believes the company has the ‘appropriate store network’ for the medium term and will take a ‘cautious’ approach to potential new openings. The company added that with the previous investments expected to contribute significantly in the year ahead, the business expects profitability to return to historical levels.

Lancashire bed and upholstery manufacturer Sweet Dreams, celebrating 30 years in business, launched a special Anniversary competition for retailers in the autumn — and the first three winners have been announced. The competition is for stores that order models from Sweet Dreams’ new Anniversary collection. A number of these buyers are drawn from a hat and win their bed free. Winners were Terry’s Bed Centre of Nuneaton, with a Carnival 2000; New Divan Man of Chesterfield, with a Celebration 3000; and The Sleep Centre of Middlesbrough, with an Occasion Silk 1000. Nick Williams, Sweet Dreams sales manager, said: “It’s gratifying to create winners. We’re sure the stores and the ultimate owners of these wonderful luxury beds will be delighted.”

Retailer to expand beds offer with more brands Carpet and beds retail group United Carpets has announced the opening of two new stores. New corporate stores were opened in Altrincham in October and in Bristol in December, bringing its network to 60 stores across the UK. United Carpets said that its St Helens store has been converted, by mutual agreement, from being a franchise to become a corporate store to ‘support corporate activities in that area’. The previous franchisee of St Helens continues to successfully franchise two other stores within the network.

British mattress manufacturer Mansion House Bedding Group has reported a decline in turnover and profit.

Commenting on the store network, Paul Eyre, chief executive, said: The group continues to look for sites that fit within the existing store network, represent a suitable retail location for the United Carpets brand and ideally can be matched with a new franchisee. Recent openings have been in slightly higher profile locations from which higher returns are anticipated.”

According to its latest filed accounts for the year ended 31 March 2018, total sales fell 6.9% to £8.8m from £9.5m in 2017, ending seven years of successive top line growth.

Within its product categories, floorcoverings continues to be its core market but experienced a downturn in like-for-like sales of 1.6%, which was due to ‘adverse market conditions’.

Gross profit also experienced a decline of 6.9% to £4m from £4.3m, whilst pre-tax profit resulted at £581,852, down by 37% compared to its profit of £933,311 recorded the previous year.

United Carpets revealed that grey remains the most popular colour choice, whilst its interest free credit offer has grown and is expected to lead to ‘significantly higher average transaction value’.

RETIREMENT IMPACTS BEDDING BUSINESS

Stated within its report, the company said that sales fell due to ‘difficult market conditions’ alongside the retirement of a senior sales manager. The business added that its reduction in profit was due to the fall in sales as well as one-off costs associated with its office and factory refurbishment.

The group’s other product category, beds, saw like-for-like sales fall by 3%, again reflecting difficult market conditions. With beds being sold in over 85% of its stores, the group said it is committed to continuing to develop the beds offer, through ‘further expansion of the range of brands being offered’.

Furniture designer prepares for debut exhibition Furniture designer and maker Harriet Poppy Speed has announced the launch of her debut solo exhibition. The event focuses on the THIS GIRL MAKES project, a movement that Harriet founded after taking inspiration from the THIS GIRL CAN initiative that celebrates women in the craft and design industries and in pursuit of removing the outdated view of gendered job roles. Commenting on the event, Harriet — or Hattie — told Cabinet Maker: “This exhibition documents the project’s development and celebrates the community of craftspeople that it has so far brought together. “Following the success of the blog, THIS GIRL MAKES now consists of an online community, events programme, and printed publication, which will be officially launched as part of this show.” The exhibition is at the Old Fire Station gallery in Oxford and will official launch on 17 January. As part of her first solo exhibition, Harriet will showcase her work as a furniture design and maker graduate from Oxford’s Rycotewood Furniture Centre. There will also be a stool making workshop and a 60-minute insight into furniture maker Harriet’s research project entitled ‘A Maker’s Guide To Grief’. Both will take place on 2 March.

NBF WELCOME NEW WASTE STRATEGY The National Bed Federation has welcomed the Government’s new waste and resources strategy. The report specifically mentions mattresses, stating that manufacturers could have to pay for dealing with those that are sent to landfill, in order to encourage more recycling. Jessica Alexander, executive director of the National Bed Federation, said: “We welcome the announcement and the opportunity to work with the government on reducing the number of mattresses going into landfill. The NBF has its own Circular Economy Committee ,which recently announced a target to divert 75% of mattresses from landfill by 2028. “We believe that, ultimately, a well-designed Extended Producer Responsibility Scheme is the most likely solution and we are keen to work with government on that. If we are going to increase the rates of recycling immediately (they are currently about 15%), costs will inevitably increase and who should pay for that is an important question. It is too early to say how much and by what mechanism, but one thing we will be looking at how mattresses are designed and constructed to make it easier to disassemble and recycle them — which might mean costs aren’t in the end any more than they are now. “And it’s not just about end of life management — some of our members have been working on designs with the most sustainable materials.”

FURNITURE SPECIALIST SECURES INVESTMENT; APPOINTS NEW CHAIRMAN Children’s furniture specialist The Children’s Furniture Company has secured new investment to expand. Foresight Group LLP has announced a ‘substantial investment’ into Caphan Trading Limited, trading as The Children’s Furniture Company, on behalf of the Midlands Engine Investment Fund. Based in Milton Keynes, The Children’s Furniture Company designs, manufactures and sells a wide range of children’s furniture. After developing its own e-commerce store, the firm now supplies several national retailers — offering durable furniture at an affordable price point compared to its competitors. This investment is to allow the firm to widen its product range and marketing channels - supporting the entrance into new international markets. Paul Hanson, founder and CEO, The Children’s Furniture Company, said: “We are looking forward to working with the Foresight team during this exciting period of growth for The Children’s Furniture Company. The investment will help us to develop our offering to customers and enhance our position in the marketplace.”

NEW SIGNINGS FOR 2019 LONDON FABRIC SHOW Two new companies are exhibiting at the London Fabric Show in March later this year. The UK’s Bill Beaumont Textiles and Ragolle N.V from Belgium are both renowned fabric producers, with long histories and extensive collections of upholstery and soft furnishing fabrics. Bill Beaumont Textiles is based in Lancashire and, as well as supplying upholstery fabrics, it is a leading brand in the supply of curtain fabrics, made-to-measure soft furnishings and wallcoverings. The company is currently run by the sixth generation of the Beaumont family to take the reigns. Daniel Beaumont is the eldest son of ex-England Rugby star Bill Beaumont.

Foresight has appointed Gareth Williams, the ex-CEO of Sofa. com, as chairman of The Children’s Furniture. Gareth has extensive experience in scaling furniture businesses and will support the management team in executing a new growth strategy. It is expected that 12 new jobs will be created over the next two years following this finance injection, all based in the South East Midlands region. Ben Dawson, senior investment manager, Foresight, added: “Paul and Clare have done an excellent job in building The Children’s Furniture Company on limited resources. Swedish furniture retailer IKEA has announced the opening date for its sustainable Greenwich store.

The London Fabric Show features over 35 high-end fabric producers from the UK and Europe and is organised by the BFM (British Furniture Manufacturers Association).

In addition to the traditional product range, inspirational room sets, crèche, restaurant, Bistro and Swedish Food Market, IKEA Greenwich will offer unique facilities, flexible work areas, workshops and free green spaces.

The 2019 event takes place on Monday 4th and Tuesday 5th March at Chelsea FC in Fulham.

New mattress brand earmarks UK entry Mattress brand Hilding Sweden has confirmed plans to expand after delivering a first year of ‘strong growth’. Max Fischer and Jens Kopke founded Hilding Sweden, which is backed by main shareholder Hilding Anders Group. The business has seen turnover accelerate to just under 20million euros from more than 150,000 mattresses sold in its first year of trading. The brand said that its partnerships with online retailers Amazon and Otto boosted the business’ sales, with its own website also performing well. Looking ahead, the company plans to expand into the UK and French markets, whilst maintaining a core focus on the German market. Jens saidt: “Internationalisation is on the agenda for the coming year, with a focus on the United Kingdom and France. In terms of product portfolio, we will continue to rely on mattresses, and selectively expand the areas spring core and latex.”

BED FIRM LAUNCHES UK MANUFACTURING FACILITY Bed manufacturer Medstrom Healthcare has announced that it will start manufacturing specialist profiling beds in the UK in early 2019. The ultra-low 5000 bed has achieved significant commercial success since its launch in 2015. Medstrom will now manufacture the 5000 bed range at its brand new facility, Medstrom House, located close to the company’s headquarters in Castle Donington, Derbyshire, and production is scheduled to commence in early 2019. The move will provide a number of benefits to customers and will also provide a level of security against the uncertainties and risks relating to Brexit. The move will also provide a boost to the local economy, creating a number of new jobs in the area. Commenting on the expansion, Medstrom said in a statement: “Customers have recognised the many unique benefits offered to patients and caregivers, the main feature being a low and customisable height to prevent falls and promote safe mobilisation.”

FURNITURE MAKER REDUCES WASTE VOLUME Furniture manufacturer Eximious Furniture Limited has invested in a new RWM75 waste baler to tackle the amount of daily waste it produces. Handling three different material streams — cardboard, plastic and metal paint tins — this vertical compact baling press from Riverside Waste Machinery is significantly reducing the volume of unwanted packaging held in the company’s 18,000sq ft factory. Leicestershire-based Eximious is passionate about improving the health and safety of its premises, in addition to contributing to the UK’s recycling targets. With the new technology in place, the machine has enabled the baling of approximately 200kg per month of materials to be quickly and efficiently size-reduced. In addition, any health and safety risk surrounding the storage of bulky waste has been minimised, and the company’s recycling processes are better supported.

Claire Geary, Eximious’ commercial director, said: “The whole of the UK has a part to play in the reduction of waste at source, in particular plastic. Initially, we looked into machinery that would assist us in crushing paint tins, but we quickly realised that we could minimise all waste materials we produce during our manufacturing activity — and our research brought us to Riverside. “As 2018 has unfolded, we have witnessed the numerous improvements made by the machine, and would recommend a baler to any company that is looking to boost its recycling agenda.”

FOAM BUSINESS NAMES NEW CENTRE AFTER FOUNDER

Foam and adhesive supplier Apollo has announced the opening of its new technical centre (above). Apollo Adhesive Solutions has invested significantly in the new technical centre in response to growing business demands and commitment to customer support. Work started on the centre back in March, and features new product development and testing labs, as well as dedicated customer training areas, and new offices for its technical team. The new technical centre has been named the Robert Saunders Building in memory of the business’ founder who sadly passed away in 2014.

FURNITURE SPECIALIST IMPLEMENTS NEW SYSTEM Bathroom specialist Utopia Furniture Group has rolled out a 5 in 1 cloud-based system from BigChange that combines mobile apps, including electronic Proofs of Delivery (POD) and vehicle tracking, with customer relationship management system (CRM). After the successful implementation of BigChange as a realtime transport management system, Utopia has now begun extending BigChange to improve back office and sales force automation. Utopia has developed a bespoke enterprise resource planning (ERP) system to underpin its growing business but needed to further automate logistics. BigChange was introduced initially to provide electronic Proof of Delivery (POD). David Conn, MD of Utopia Furniture Group, said: “We have developed a unique build-to-order manufacture and logistics business and that requires us to innovate and invest when it comes to technology. It’s that technology that ensures we retain a competitive advantage. “When we discovered BigChange we realised that their technology was way ahead of anything else. Marketing drive boosts sales Retail group United Carpets has reported a growth in HY sales. According to its latest trading update for the six months ended 30 September 2018, total sales rose 1% to £10.8m from £9.9m against the same period in 2017. Like-for-like sales decreased by 1.8%. The company stated that pre-tax profit had declined by 79% to £121,000 from £589,000. Current trading has seen like-for-like sales improve to a modest 0.1% up on the prior year. Paul Eyre, chief executive, said: “We worked hard to maintain sales levels but to do so required increased investment in marketing and further support for the franchise network. We continued to invest in online and future business development opportunities to better prepare the group during a challenging period of changing shopping habits. Retailer to close 40 UK stores

CARPET MAKERS SUPPORT CIRCULAR ACTION

Homewares and fashion chain Laura Ashley has revealed plans to close 40 UK stores as focus turns to China expansion.

Carpet manufacturers and civil society join voices to make the carpet industry go circular.

Laura Ashley, which is owned by Malayan United Industries (MUI), said that its store estate would reduce from 160 to 120, with its remaining stores to be expanded.

Launched by Zero Waste Europe, the call to action is supported by DSM-Niaga, Interface and Tarkett, which urges the European Commission and Member States to adopt mandatory rules to push the whole sector in this direction.

The move follows the businesses previous closure of 40 stores back in 2015 and said that affected staff would potentially be moved to larger outlets. With the UK footprint set to decline, MUI said that its focus has turned to China, with store openings expected once it has built up a customer base. Currently, the group has a regional office in Singapore that is solely focused on ecommerce into China. In a statement, Andrew Khoo, non-executive director of the company and current executive chairman of MUI, said: “Once we get a significant foothold in digital retail in China, we can look at the physical stores rollout.” On the UK market, Andrew added that Laura Ashley’s furniture division has been ‘slow’, despite an uplift in clothing sales and that the environment remains ‘challenging’. “My long-term view of the UK is I have confidence in the UK and we will continue to invest in the UK. As long as Laura Ashley stays relevant there’s no reason we can’t get over this little speed bump,” Andrew concluded.

In order to make this a reality, the sector must phase out hazardous substances and virgin materials, and transition towards safe and healthy components including an increasing rate of recycled or renewable content. The toolkit proposed by Eunomia provides a range of options that policy-makers can choose from to accelerate circular economy in the carpet sector while, at the same time, helping to achieve the EU waste recycling and landfilling targets.

Furniture retail sales grow in November

HIGHER COSTS IMPACT PROFITS AT MATTRESS MAKER

Furniture retail sales rose during November on both last month and compared to 2017. According to the latest November 2018 figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the total value of furniture and lighting sales increased by 18% to £1.3bn from £1.1bn in October. The increase marked a return to growth following last month’s decline from £1.4bn in September, as well as registering as the second joint highest value this year along with sales in March. Compared to November 2017, furniture and lighting sales rose 8.3% from £1.2bn. Floorcoverings retail sales reported a mixed bag, with sales up on last month but down on an annual comparison. Sales increased 10.5% to £148.3m from £133.9m last month, whilst, compared to the previous year, sales declined by 10.3% from £165.5m. In overall terms, the quantity bought in the retail industry during November increased by 3.6%. The total amount spent within retail during the month represented £37.4bn, up by 5% compared to November 2017. Online sales as a proportion of all retailing exceeded 20% for the first time, with all online retailing accounting for 21.5% of total retailing on a non-seasonally adjusted basis. Commenting on the figures, ONS senior statistician Rhian Murphy said: “Retail growth continued to slow in the three months to November with strong increases in household goods offset by falling spending in department stores and food shops. “Black Friday boosted sales in November, helped by internet promotions with online spending accounting for over 20% of total retail sales for the first time. Household goods, department stores and clothes shops all saw a boost in their online sales.”

CHEMICALS GROUP SELLS TEXTILES BUSINESS Chemical manufacturer Stephenson Group has confirmed the sale of its textiles business to Belgium-based EuroDye CTC. Leeds-based Stephenson Group has disposed of Stephenson Textiles, which also produces specialised products for carpet manufacture, for an undisclosed sum. It was the group’s last non-core division following the sale of Alkon Solutions to US-based Polymer Solutions Group in 2016. In a statement, Jamie Bentley, chief executive of Stephenson Group, said that the sale allows the group to focus on its personal care business, with significant investment planned. Jamie added that Eurodye CTC was the ‘best partner to ensure the long-term prosperity’ of its former textile chemical business.

Mattress manufacturer Tempur has reported a slight decline in turnover and profit. According to its latest filed accounts for the year ended 31 December 2017, total sales fell 0.3% to £46m from £46.2m in 2016, ending a seven-year run of growing turnover. Gross profit declined 8.5% to £9.7m from £10.6m, whilst pre-tax profit resulted at £1.1m, down by 26.6% from its profit of £1.5m recorded the previous year. Detailed within its report, Tempur stated that the highest proportion of net sales was through its retail segment. It said that the costs involved in the new range roll out had a ‘material effect’ on profits, but added that the new collections have ‘performed well since their launch’. Tempur added that trading conditions ‘remained challenging’. Despite this, the company has continued to make ‘significant’ investments into national advertising to boost future growth. Tempur UK Ltd is the UK arm of American-based Tempur Sealy International Inc and sells throughout the UK and Ireland.

West Elm owner takes legal action against online retailer US-based Williams-Sonoma, the business behind furniture brand West Elm, has launched a lawsuit against online marketplace Amazon. The business claims that Amazon.com has set up an WilliamsSonoma-branded store as well as infringing designs from its West Elm furniture brand to create ‘cheaper’ alternatives. In documents seen by Cabinet Maker, the lawsuit highlights that Williams-Sonoma has recently received various complaints from customers who made purchases via Amazon’s website thinking they were buying directly from Williams-Sonoma. The report claims that Amazon pages indicated the items were being sold ‘by Williams-Sonoma’ or that they were ‘Best Selling Products from Williams-Sonoma’. Furthermore, a claim of Amazon using the Williams-Sonoma mark in direct email marketing campaigns has also been disclosed, whilst adding that Amazon’s ‘Rivet’ furniture brand has allegedly infringed trademarks and design patents for the group’s West Elm products that include the Orb and Slope dining chairs. The lawsuit, which was filed by law firm Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe, asks for an injunction banning Amazon from using the Williams-Sonoma mark. The group is also seeking damages worth up to $2m per mark used on goods sold as well as other damages in relation for trademark infringement.

Steinhoff outlines investigation conclusion Global group Steinhoff International has confirmed that its investigation into financial irregularities is expected to come to an end this year. Revealed within an updated statement, Steinhoff, which owns UK brands Bensons for Beds and Harveys, said that the investigation is ‘now expected to be complete by the end of February 2019, with the final report being available to the company shortly thereafter’. Steinhoff added that the forensic investigation being undertaken by PwC has ‘progressed well’, although the investigative process has been ‘significantly more complex than initially anticipated’. Furthermore, the group confirmed that full implications of the accumulated findings of the PwC report on the group’s 2017 and 2018 financial statements are ‘still being analysed to ensure that the correct accounting treatment and related disclosures are adopted’. ‘The company now estimates that it will publish its group audited financial statements for 2017 and 2018 by the middle of April 2019’, the statement read.

FLOORING GROUP PLOTS FACTORY EXPANSION Belgian floorcoverings and fabrics business Beaulieu Flooring Solutions has announced plans to increase capacity at its JUTEKS Russian Vinyl Rolls plant. The addition of a second production line at its location in Kameshkovo, Vladimir region, scheduled to come on stream in Q2 2020, will also create new job openings. Since acquiring the JUTEKS Russian plant in 2012, Beaulieu Flooring Solutions has invested in supporting manufacturing capabilities with a local design studio for the creation of regionally-tailored designs, the acquisition of a local distributor, and an extensive warehouse complex for raw materials and finished products. New warehouses were opened in Saint-Petersburg, Russia, and in Astana, Kazakhstan in 2018. James Neuling, vice-president Beaulieu Flooring Solutions, added: “The decision to invest in more capacity is a great way to mark its 10-year anniversary and also our confidence for the future. Independent furniture business Express Furniture is contemplating relocating after a string of burglaries. Express Furniture, which is situated on Caroline Street in Wigan, has been the victim of numerous break-ins, with the latest incident occurring over the weekend of 15 December.

Bespoke furniture maker NEJ Stevenson has announced the launch of its new website as well as a new appointment.

The business, owned by sisters Liz Connelly and Vicki Maclugash, said that thieves targeted the shop both days and stole products, as well as leaving ‘thousands of pounds worth of damage’.

Warwickshire-based NEJ Stevenson launched its new website at the end of last year, which features a fresh new look.

The number of burglaries has increased over the past 10 years for the business, which has been at its current site for 15 years. In a statement through local press and social media, the company said that it ‘cannot afford to keep replacing security systems destroyed in previous raids’ as well as repairing constant property damage and replenishing stock. Return to profit growth Tillicoultry-based furniture retailer Forrest Furnishings has reported a return to profit growth. According to its latest filed accounts for the year ended 28 February 2018, total sales resulted at £7.5m, down by 16% compared to its turnover of £9m in 2017, although this was over a 14-month period. Pre-tax profit increased to £715,363 from £33,174 reported last year. Forrest Furnishing, which is part of the Sterling Furniture Group, said within its report that the Brexit vote continues to negatively impact consumer confidence. Other implicating factors included low levels of housing activity. Sterling Furniture Group reported a growth in sales of 3.3% to £58.6m, marking a fifth straight year of turnover growth. Pre-tax profit reduced from £1.8m to £1.5m, which was impacted by increased costs.

FURNITURE FIRM SECURES MAJOR HOTEL CONTRACT

Danish furniture brand reveals Thailand expansion Danish furniture brand JYSK has announced the opening of its first store in Thailand.

Furniture manufacturer LiDR Contract Furniture has secured a major hotel contract worth £900,000.

The opening, which is based in a shopping centre in Ratchapruk in the capital city of Bangkok, is the first of six to launch and forms part of a much wider expansion plan in the country.

The Stoke-based business will supply all the fitted and loose furniture in the bedrooms, bars, dining area and reception for Hanley’s new Hilton Garden Inn hotel.

JYSK plans to open around 30 new stores in Thailand over the next five years, with its first store operated by its local franchise partner, Boonthavorn Group.

The contract furniture firm is also working with designers on brand new designs for the bedroom furniture. Genr8 Developments will be the 140-bedroom hotel developer and owner and forms part of the Smithfield scheme, which is also backed by Stoke-on-Trent City Council.

The other five stores confirmed for launch include city stores within Boonthavorn shopping centres, a JYSK flagship store, and a store at Jatujak subway station in Bangkok. The move into Thailand becomes the retailer’s 51st country, adding to its expansion into Dubai earlier this year.

Eleanor Owen, company director at LiDR, said that winning the contract is testament to businesses growth and that its team is ‘looking forward to working on this significant project’.

Recently JYSK also confirmed plans to open its first store in Ireland in April next year, when the company will be celebrating the 40th anniversary of the first JYSK store in Denmark.

LiDR is based on Campbell Road and has been a family-run business for 30 years.

Cautious approach despite growth

Furniture and homewares retailer Dunelm has reported a strong second quarter with online sales growth continuing to dominate.

Textile furnishings group Designers Guild has reported a second straight year of turnover growth, despite UK sales slipping.

According to its trading update for the 13-week period ended 29 December, 2018, total sales rose 9.6% to £304m, with like-for-like sales up by 9% to £282.5m. Like-for-like store sales increased 5.7% to £24634m, whilst online sales rose 37.9% — or by £9.9m — to £36.1m.

According to its latest filed accounts for the year ended 31 March, 2018, total group sales rose by 2.1% to £53.1m from £52.1m in 2017. UK sales fell 0.5% to £17.5m from £17.6m, whilst sales from the EU increased by 1.9% to £26.3m from £25.8m. Sales from outside the EU also rose by 6.9% to £9.2m from £8.6m.

Dunelm said that it expects pre-tax profit to be around £70m in first half of the year after taking an impairment charge of £3.8m in relation to the Fogarty brand, which went into administration during the quarter. During the period, Dunelm did not open any new stores, but did confirm it plans to open one new store towards the year end. Nick Wilkinson, Dunelm’s chief executive, said: “We remain cautious on the outlook for the second half, given the ongoing uncertainty in the UK economy. However, in the medium term, we see significant opportunity to grow the business by focusing on our customers and seizing opportunities in a digital world.”

Gross profit rose 2.2% to £27.5m from £26.9m, whilst pre-tax profit resulted at £1.3m, down from its profit of £1.7m recorded the previous year. Stated within its report, the company said that the luxury end of the home furnishings market played an important part within its growth, whilst also adding that tight cost control measures and continued focus on margins sustained the businesses profitability for the year.

Homebase signs up bed brand Homebase has signed a concession partnership with Silentnight, adding to its already agreed concession link-up with carpet retailer Tapi Carpets. The partnership marks a return into beds for Homebase and will see several concessions rolled out over the next six months, with its Haringey location to be the first in February. Birstall-based Easy Bathrooms has secured £2m of funding from investment firm ThinCats. Independent furniture retailer Annie Mo’s has confirmed plans to close one of its stores this week.

Carpet supplier Abingdon Flooring has reported a third consecutive year of turnover growth as sales climbed back towards record levels.

Annie Mo’s is currently holding a closing down sale ahead of its official closing date on 13 January, 2019, as well as confirming that its Aberdeen store on Union Street will remain open alongside its website. Home improvement retailer Homebase has finished in last place in the latest Which? annual online shop survey. Which? conducted a consumer survey to find the best online shop with more than 10,000 Which? members taking part during June and July 2018. Homebase came in dead last in 118th place with a customer score of 55%. In contrast, specialist skincare site LizEarle.com was crowned the champion with a score of 94%. Detailed in the survey, Which? asked respondents to tell them about their online shopping experiences over the past six months, including how satisfied they were and whether or not they would recommend it to a friend. Also in the home furnishings category was Made.com, which scored a low level of 67% and came in joint 110th position. Behind Made.com was another home improvement retailer in B&Q, scoring 62% in 115th. Catalogue retailer Littlewoods finished in 108th, scoring 68%, whilst department store retailer John Lewis soared to sixth with a score of 90%. Harry Rose, from Which?, said: “The online shops with the happiest customers tend to be the ones that offer a personal service, quality items, and deliver quickly and conveniently. “Where the big players are lacking, either with poor service or confusing websites, smaller more specialised online retailers have seized the opportunity to make their mark and give shoppers exactly what they want.”

According to its latest filed accounts for the year ended 31 May, 2018, total sales rose 15.6% to £13.3m from £11.5m in 2017. Its the company’s highest turnover since 2001 when sales reached £13.1m. Gross profit increased 19% to £4.9m from £4.1m, whilst its pre-tax profit of £385,000 recorded last year, fell into the red at a loss of £437,119. Detailed in its report, Pledge said that its London showroom in Clerkenwell continues to be ‘instrumental’ in the promotion of its Edge brand, as well as using the platform to forge progress into the A&D, design and build markets. Looking ahead, the company plans to expand the sales team in London to further develop the business in the city and greater London area.

Kitchen unit manufacturer Richmond Cabinet Company Limited has been placed into administration. Paul Dumbell and David Costley-Wood, from KPMG’s Restructuring practice, were appointed as joint administrators of Richmond Cabinet Company Limited on 20 December, 2018. The company was a family-owned designer and manufacturer of kitchen units operating out of a leasehold site at Hadfield Industrial Estate in Glossop. It serviced retail customers and commercial developments in the private rented and student accommodation sectors. An increasingly competitive market led to declining trading performance in recent years, while several loss-making contracts put significant pressure on the company’s working capital. Following their appointment, the joint administrators granted a business operating licence to Richmond Furniture Limited. All 123 employees have been transferred over to the licensee under TUPE regulations. Paul Dumbell, director at KPMG and joint administrator, said: “The licence arrangement allows us to fulfil outstanding contracts and in turn, protect the debtor book while we explore options to sell the company’s assets. We would encourage any interested parties to come forward as soon as possible.”

Furniture business suffers Christmas Day break in Independent furniture retailer Global Interiors became a victim of a break in over the Christmas period. Thieves targeted the Bolton-based business, which is situated on Blackburn Road, on Christmas Day, with CCTV capturing numerous items stolen. The footage saw two hooded offenders force entry into the store between 6pm and 7.30pm and steal two ornate Indonesian lamps worth around £300. The latest break-in is the fifth in the past six months, costing the business around £20,000. The CCTV footage was passed on to Greater Manchester Police, which issued an appeal for any witnesses to come forward. Following the appeal, two men were charged with criminal damage and have been bailed to appear before court on 15 January. In a statement on social media, Global Interiors said: “We were broken into on Christmas Day. The thieves calmly looked in every window, picked what they wanted, and smashed our windows.”

Property firm acquires five logistics warehouses

MATTRESS MANUFACTURER CONFIRMS NEW APPOINTMENT

UK Commercial Property REIT has announced the acquisition of a portfolio of five distribution warehouses in core locations across the Midlands from Clipstone Logistics REIT for a sum of £85.4m.

Mattress manufacturer Tempur UK has announced that managing director Tobin James (left) has been promoted. Tobin James, managing director at Tempur UK Ltd, has been given additional market responsibilities in 2019 and has been appointed to the new role of managing director (UK and Benelux region) for Tempur Sealy International.

The acquisition has been funded from existing cash resources and is a continuation of the management’s strategy to recycle capital from the sale of lower yielding assets into higher yielding opportunities with sustainable income. The portfolio totals 909,030sq ft and is 100% let to a diverse mix of tenants, including Clipper Logistics, Roca Limited, Bestway Pharmacy NDC Limited, Rhenus Logistics Limited and TJX UK (owner of TK Maxx and Homesense). The assets are strategically located on established industrial parks across the East and West Midlands at Cannock, Derbyshire, Leicester, Stoke-on-Trent and Newcastle-UnderLyme. EU SALES DRIVE GROWTH AS FLOOD IMPACTS UK MARKET Furniture manufacturer Boss Design has reported a return to sales growth. According to its latest filed accounts for the year ended 31 March, 2018, total sales rose 0.3% to £36.9m from £36.8m in 2017. UK sales, its core market, fell 2.1% to £26.2m from £26.7m, whilst EU sales saw growth of 18.5% to £3.2m from £2.7m. North America sales slipped slightly from £2.1m to £2m, as did sales in Asia, down from £4.9m to £4.5m. Gross profit remained static at £11.4m, whilst pre-tax profit resulted at £2.3m, slightly down from its profit of £2.4m recorded the previous year. Stated within its report, the company said that it had experienced a flood at its London showroom during July 2017, which impacted trading.

Tobin will continue to manage the UK business with his team and the Benelux managing director, Marcel Hoogendoorn, will also now report to him. Commenting on his new role, Tobin said: “I am delighted to begin working with Marcel and the Benelux team. Tempur is an established and successful brand in both the UK and Benelux markets and I am looking forward to working on our plans to take our business to the next level. “In 2019 we will launch our ‘mattress like no other’ advertising campaign, which will continue to grow consumer awareness and increase footfall to Tempur retailers.”

Festive period proved challenging as shop prices rise Shop prices experienced a slight rise during December although non-food prices were cheaper than last year. According to the latest BRC-Nielsen Shop Price Index for December 2018, overall shop prices increased by 0.3% year-onyear. Non-food prices fell by -0.4% on last year, whilst food prices rose 1.5% compared to December last year. Helen Dickinson OBE, chief executive, British Retail Consortium, said: “December’s Shop Price figures only serve to underline how tough conditions are in the retail industry. Despite Non-Food goods being cheaper on average than last year, early indications suggest that retailers faced a challenging environment throughout the festive season. “Shoppers may have become accustomed to great value, but Brexit uncertainty means that a continuation of the low prices is by no means guaranteed.

This led to increased costs by 4.9% to treat and refurbish the showroom following the flood, which was completed in April 2018.

“Without a trade deal with the EU, the cost of importing many of the goods we buy day to day will go up significantly and retailers simply do not have the room in their margins to protect consumers from those costs.

Furthermore, the business has launched a new extension project at its Dudley HQ, as well as committing more funds into product development, allowing the business to expand into new markets.

“Unless Parliament comes together behind a deal that ensures frictionless, tariff free trade we could see prices paid by UK households rise substantially.”

trail Cabinet Maker takes a second look at the upcoming January Furniture Show with a focus on the new Contract Trail.

Happy New Year! Now that the Christmas festivities are over for another year, full attention can turn to the January Furniture Show (JFS). In Cabinet Maker’s first look at the event that takes place from 20-23 January 2019 at Birmingham’s NEC, the editorial highlighted the array of all things new. This second preview continues on the same path. In fact, it’s more of a trail — the Contract Trail. Along with requests for more beds, more accessories and more lighting at the January Furniture Show, the organisers also received many requests for companies which supply contract furniture and furnishings to be identified. The organisers listened and acted. JFS in 2019 will introduce its new Contract Trail. It is the last piece of the jigsaw puzzle to fulfil all of the major requests received from visitors, and it will identify all of the 170 exhibitors who either regularly, or occasionally, supply contract orders. On arrival at the show visitors will be able to collect a handy fold-out map, which identifies the contract supplying companies in each hall. The Contract Trail will also be available on the JFS website in advance of the show, making it easy for buyers to plan their stand

Eagerly anticipated by the independent furniture sector, the AIS Furniture Show has once again taken over Cranmore Park, offering the group’s members and the wider trade an opportunity to source exciting ranges and brands. The show will open its doors on 20-21 January, following two days of private trading reserved for AIS members. Who is Iconography? How was 2018 for the business? 2018 has proven to be our best year ever — increasing our turnover, profits and headcount. In quarter four we focused our marketing efforts on engaging with furniture retailers. As a result, we have been retained by several new clients. We have also developed an exciting new relationship with a company that provides a progressive EPoS and furniture retail management solutions. What would you say was a particular highlight of last year? We continued to develop our agency and eCommerce platform to offer a range of additional branding and marketing services for digital and print. Has the company made any recent investments? We are investing in a marketing agency to broaden our ability to service clients in the furniture market. This will include retailers as well as manufacturers and other brands. Will you be attending the January Furniture Show? The January Furniture Show is always a great event. It’s the perfect opportunity to network with clients and speak with potential new clients. When the name Peter Andre appears in the headlines, you would most likely think back to 1996 when the popular pop-reggae single ‘Mysterious Girl’ stormed to number two in the UK singles chart. Or perhaps your thoughts would lean towards Peter giving up his luxury items and braving the jungle in 2004’s I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! programme, and then again in 2011. Fast forward to the present and Peter Andre has hit the headlines with his new furniture venture, announcing the launch of A by Andre.

The new collection is made up from four luxury beds, with the idea of creating ‘something for everyone’. Peter has not been alone in this concept’s birth, as interiors retailer HOS Home, led by Dan and Layla Chapman, have been acting as a furniture guide to the pop-star’s debut beds launch. 11th January 2019 | 44

A by Andre officially launched on 12 November and Peter explains why the mysterious move into the beds market was a good fit. “My desire to start this new venture stems from my family history. My dad was one of the first to build luxury designer homes on the Gold Coast in Australia. My brother, Michael, worked for media 5, which is the biggest architect and interior design company in Australia. My dad wanted me to follow this route but I wanted to go into music. Clearly it’s in our blood, but it has just taken 25 years to get the ideas together. “Taking this inspiration forward, I teamed up with Layla and Dan Chapman, of HOS Home, who I had already forged a great relationship with as they helped transformed the bedrooms at home. So, the progression was a natural one and in terms of the idea

behind the brand and designs themselves, we wanted to create a selection of luxury, bespoke beds at an affordable price. “It was an 18-month idea turned into reality. When my wife, Emily, and I bought our house it was a new build, so it was a complete blank canvas. When I was looking at bespoke furniture it was so outrageously expensive. That’s when I got in touch with Dan and Layla. We’ve designed four beds, with different tastes in mind to appeal to everyone.” And the initial feedback has been overwhelming, with the launch proving to be a ‘huge success’. Peter was very clear in the fact that A by Andre is a separate venture and not part of HOS Home. It is an independent brand, project and business, which Peter, Layla and Dan are equally involved in.

With the formation of the brand, the next step for Peter was to focus on a market that appealed to his and the team’s vision. “In a market place that has become ever crowded by choice and e-commerce solutions, we are committed to ensuring our stockists get full support from the A By Andre team, with a commitment to putting physical retail stores at the fore front of our plans,” Peter said “Applications and retail accounts will be monitored strictly to ensure that we work with a select number of exclusive stores, to maintain the credibility of the brand. The

general public cannot purchase via abyandre. com, however, they can visit us, and search for the nearest stockist via the ‘stockist’ page. “The beds will be available at hoshome. com, but will not be listed on the A By Andre website as a stockist. The beds will not be available on any other online-only retailer websites, a further showcase in our commitment to our physical retailer partnerships.” The drive to champion selective retail partnerships is one of its core strategies and, with production being here in the UK,

the brand has scope to grow at its own rate. Peter said: “Currently, we only design and manufacture the beds, not mattresses. All manufacturing, including frame production and upholstery, takes place in Yorkshire, at our dedicated factory. We have invested over £100,000 in the design, product development, branding and launch.” The team behind A by Andre has worked tirelessly over the past 18 months in developing the brand, which includes the Wentworth, Mayfair, Kensington and Chelsea models. Peter was quick to add that he recruited Paul Bell, who brings over 39 years of furniture industry experience to the business, to head up the design, branding, sales and manufacturing team. And so far, so good. A by Andre has drawn plenty of plaudits during its young life, with Peter beaming that the journey has been nothing short of ‘incredible’. “The launch was a huge success and we have had a great response from retailers, press and the general public. People seem to really like the beds,” said Peter, revealing: “We already have well known, credible luxury furniture retailers committed to stocking the beds in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. eventually internationally.” Global expansion is one area that the business has earmarked for the future, but first it has its sights on growing its product range, with initial plans already under way, as Peter teased: “We may expand the collection of beds but also accessories for the bedroom. We are already prototyping designs for additional bedding, soft furnishings and upholstery. This is just the beginning, so watch this space!” Cabinet Maker, and perhaps the rest of the industry, will certainly be keeping an eye on A by Andre’s progress. With the January

EXPANSION on ALL Fronts Bed manufacturer Sweet Dreams reveals its expansion plans into new product offerings following a successful anniversary year.

Lancashire manufacturer Sweet Dreams is continuing to celebrate its 30-year anniversary and is looking forward to 2019 and beyond with an expanded offering. In addition to divans, bedframes, bedroom furniture and upholstery, January Furniture Show 2019 will also see the official launch of Sweet Dreams’ brand new living collection. Included are dining tables, with for example, attractive solid oak/acacia mix Fern complemented by matching living room furniture, plus occasional tables, and decorative mirrors, clocks and lamps.

Bases come in a choice of two colours and the beds are available in four sizes, with a wide range of storage options. Two of the four beds in the new Anniversary luxury collection, Celebration 3000 and Carnival 2000, also feature encapsulated springs — and a sprung cushion top. Both models contain natural wool, silk and cashmere in their fillings and sport a luxury knit microquilted top. Consumers choose from three colours in the textured-velvetupholstered Anniversary base and headboard. Beds come in three sizes with a full choice of storage options.

Retailers were wowed at the September NBF Bed Show with the latest bed frames in sensational fabrics and there might be one or two on display in January. If you missed them in Telford, don’t miss Vivien or Garland at the NEC — and there’ll be other new upholstered frames too. Sweet Dreams’ adjustable range, which goes from strength to strength and has been augmented with new Latexmatic, with its pro-biotic mattress cover, will be shown off. Those who love the new Sweet Dreams fabrics will also be in for a treat with models from this range. If you prefer wood, Bacall is an unusual bedframe sure to turn heads, in oak or white finish. Sweet Dreams’ wooden frames and furniture for the bedroom reveal a vastly extended collection this year. New Vincent and Spencer are stand-out ranges, composed of rich, dark acacia and solid oak respectively. Both ranges feature ready-assembled chests and cabinets, as well as wardrobes and a bedframe in three

To show off all the collections, and the very best examples of each, Sweet Dreams is taking more space than usual at the exhibition. This year Sweet Dreams products can be found on stands J10, H1 and H10 — all in Hall 5. It promises to be quite a display. However, expansion of the company’s bedroom furniture collection doesn’t end there; there are also seven new fully assembled ranges of furniture, encompassing finishes from walnut to white high gloss. The choice, like the quality, is remarkable. Before turning to downstairs delights, it’s impossible to forget children’s beds — or at least, not exciting ones like these! Treble, Cheshire and Whiz are the latest versatile bunks, joining favourites Space and Jazzy in the range. Daybeds also form part of the range, and new mink velvet Laurie is one to watch out for. The daybed idea approaches the more traditional sofabed concept, and again Sweet Dreams has expanded this range. There is one brand new model, as yet unnamed, with an altogether different kind of action, plus two-fold-action models with fully sprung, tufted damask mattresses, and clic-clacs too. Don’t miss Dawn, with its plump, inviting looks, available in three sizes and a wide range of fabrics.

Finally, the major story for January: upholstery. Sweet Dreams has gradually been evolving and honing its UK-manufactured range and the 2019 collection is stunning. There are fresh models: traditional 3-21 suites Harvey and Fraser are hugely commercial, while Carmen Corner is a development of a favourite sofa style that remains in the range, together with many others. Still under wraps is a brand new British-made corner unit, which incorporates both storage and a sofabed — the best of all worlds, and expected to delight. It will get its big reveal at the NEC. In addition, there are standalone chairs — including another range so new it didn’t make the 2018 brochure. Then there’s the recliner range from overseas; Rutland, a fabric manual recliner, has ‘showstopper’ written all over its comfy cushions. A 3-2-1, it comes in a choice of two colourways; dusk and marle. Also new is Rome, another manual recliner suite in a soft-

touch fabric: this time in silver or pecan. These join the models that made such an impact for Sweet Dreams last year: Trieste and Urbino. It’s an upholstery range that is making a strong impression on retailers and consumers, and which has established the thirty-year-old company as a force to be reckoned with downstairs, as well as upstairs. Sweet Dreams complements its product range with excellent service, speedy delivery and above all the reputation of a family business bursting with integrity. Ambition is always paired with quality; consolidation with forward-thinking. It’s an outstanding modus operandi that should serve the company well as it embarks on its next 30 years.

The flagship Highgrove brand has gone from strength to strength in recent years and the introduction of the Ambassador Stockist programme in 2017 has brought real benefits to both the company and its appointed independent retailers. In the past year, more than 50 new bespoke Highgrove in-store displays have been installed throughout the UK, with more than £150k invested. Highgrove head of marketing Shane Harding is confident that the investment has paid dividends. “The modular nature of the displays means that we’ve been able to tailor each one to our customers’ needs and despite a challenging

market, we’ve seen a 34% incremental sales increase where displays have been installed,” he said. The company aims to at least double this number in 2019. Highgrove will also be adding to its Equasleep temperature control and ErgoSense soft foam

In 2019 the UK market will be facing probably the most challenging time of the last few decades — and the furniture sector is acknowledged to be one of those that will be most affected due to the great historical link with Italian flair. The world has changed, from the times when handmade quality was the only option available to modern days when we can almost dream about handmade products. The golden days when every craftsman fed his children by creating his handmade wonders are completely gone. Coopers, swillers, woodturners, blacksmiths and many more are on the brink of extinction because the modern digital time has no demand for them. When they disapper there will be no one left to recreate and pass on those incredible centuries of old crafts. Every one of those craftsman needed to master many techniques to be a master at his craft. For example, every cooper and woodturner had to listen to the wood, know how to select it in the nature, how to cut it and shape it, and how to store it — and all that without the use of any kind of technology. That was art infused with passion, no matter what the world says today. When the digital age came on the scene, we started to turn into a global village where we suddenly need all those products from every corner of the Earth thousands of miles away, regardless of their quality. Modern technologies such as the internet, mobile phones, computers, television and all other gadgets have simply erased everything that people created and mastered for centuries. Today, everything has to be available to us, any place and any time as we imagine it. Just order it and it will be on your doorstep in 24 hours. But the real value is far from that — it can’t be done right away and in unlimited quantities, it just takes time. The more we have to wait for it, the more it will be appreciated and looked after as many

heirloom pieces really are today. Economic pressure is high to be creative and passionate as people once were, and it just takes us even further from the reality and the truth. The truth should be pretty obvious, get back to basics, go live in the countryside, form a family, become a farmer and grow your own food, throw the gadgets through the window and learn all those ancient skills. It will make you tired but truly happy. Luckily there are still some ‘weird people’ who persist in an attempt to revive and produce something of real value, handmade with passion and knowledge as opposed to mass factory-made in China. Those are the people that we all need to support in order to enable them to pass on their skills to young people, therefore offering them some real knowledge and insight. Every handmade object requires a lot of time, sweat, skill and patience, so next time when you think about buying cheap alternatives please consider where is the real value hidden and are you supporting your fellow countryman and craftsman or some cheap factory ten thousand miles away that produces extremely low quality products only for profit.
