Special award for Ella Edwinstowe Brownie Ella Howarth (7) was presented with a special award at her unit meeting by Girlguiding Nottinghamshire’s County Commissioner Jackie Brocklehurst. The Celtic Cross is given to mark exceptional courage, loyalty and commitment, particularly in the face of illness or disability. Ella, who was a member of Rainbows before moving up to 2nd Edwinstowe Brownies, is in remission from cancer and was nominated for the award by Brown Owl Linda Broom. ‘Ella is one of the happiest and most caring girls I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting,’ said Linda in her nomination. ‘She always shows great kindness to her Girlguiding friends and rushes through the door on Monday evenings with a huge eager smile on her face!’ Ella and her fellow Brownies shared a massive cake after the presentation – it was decorated with sweeties with ‘Well Done Ella’ in bright icing across the top. ‘Ella’s citation reminds us of how incredibly brave she has been, and of how much she is valued by all her Rainbow and Brownie friends, said County Commissioner Jackie
Brocklehurst. ‘She’s a very special and courageous girl - and is a true credit both to her family and to Girlguiding in Nottinghamshire.’
RUFFORD Abbey Country Park has been named visitor attraction of the year at the Nottinghamshire Hospitality STARS Awards. Rachael Dolan, events and marketing manager, said 2018 had been a busy year for the park. Highlights included a 1940s living history weekend, outdoor cinema screenings, the Great Food And Drink festival and
new facilities, such as an inclusive play village — including a castle and zip wire — as well as adventure golf, archery and boating. Visitor numbers have increased since a partnership between Nottinghamshire County Council and Parkwood Outdoors to run the facility. Andrew Cox, general manager at Rufford Abbey, said: “I have worked at

Our Meeting on Wednesday evening, 21st November, was an interesting talk by Helen Mitchell of Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, who spoke about all aspects of their work, including training volunteers, organising workshops and activities for children and young people, repairing footpaths and dry stone walls, removing debris from rivers, collecting seeds for the Millenium Seed Bank, preserving endangered flora and
fauna and carrying out surveys of them. Helen answered questions during and after her talk, following which the raffle was drawn with the first prizewinner being Christine Cooper. Our next Meeting will be our Members’ New Year Dinner and Social Evening, which will take place at the Fox, Kelham on Wednesday, 20th January, 2019.
Bilsthorpe Flying High Academy hold beautiful Christingle Service Rev Anna Alls said, “Christingle is a lovely service and I love to be a part of what the school children are doing to recognise it. The orange with a candle is so simple and effective and it captures children’s imaginations. I think this is a wonderful opportunity for children to think about what it means to be a Christian and a great reason for me to talk to children about my own faith and to give them an opportunity to explore theirs.” Pupil Charlotte Frost said, “I really like Christingle because it reminds me of God and Jesus. We sing songs at the Christin-
gle service and I don’t get nervous in front of all of the parents, it’s nice way to start Christmas for us.”

AW Safety Management a H&S Consulting and Training company based in Edwinstowe have once again come together with the help of the local community to collect Christmas goodies and treats for the local food bank in Ollerton. With the help of Edwinstowe House Business Community, St Mary’s Church and both St Mary’s and King Edwin School we’ve managed to spread some Christmas cheer and donate to make someone else’s Christmas that little bit more special.
Foodbank Manager Lynn Matthews commented that “recently their supplies were down to their last 2 tonnes but thanks to the support of local business they are now back up to 6 tonnes and the addition of our “Christmas Goodies” food drive would be weighed in and distributed this week to those in need of assistance”

Jephsons brings early Christmas cheer to Portland College Mansfield-based national interior fit-out specialists Jephsons Shopfitters brought some early Christmas cheer to Portland College with the manufacture and installation of a brand-new bar in the College’s Eastwood Suite.
Jephsons has been a long-standing supporter of the college, which works with disabled people to develop their employability, independence and communication skills. It also works with employers to create an inclusive workforce and support business growth.
Jephson’s commercial director, Ian Jephson, unveiled the new bar to a gathering of business owners and managers at the Mansfield and Ashfield 2020 networking event with the help of Santa Claus.
The college approached Jephsons to see if it could help with the installation of a new bar, but it had no idea it was in for an early Christmas present when Ian revealed that the company had contributed £5,000 worth of work and materials for free.
“Portland College is one of our chosen charities that we support. The Eastwood Suite is a great venue for all sorts of events and we are proud of our contribution to its future success. We also make good use of Portland Print, the College’s print workshop which prints all our stationery. We think it’s really important to support enterprise like the College in our community and would encourage others to do the same, not just at Christmas, but all year round,” said Ian Jephson.

How to ventilate your own home - and stay healthy Rex Nye, from independent builders merchant D.W Nye, explains how good ventilation improves energy efficiency and boosts your family’s health. As winter sets in, it’s only natural that we spend more time tucked up inside our cosy homes. In fact, we spend 90% of our time indoors, but health experts say poor air quality in the home could be bad for our health. Indoor air can be up to 10 times more polluted than outdoor air. Smoking, gas cookers, faulty boilers and heaters can all lead to poor air quality, which has been linked to respiratory problems. Meanwhile, lack of circulating air can cause condensation, leading to damp and mould problems. Aside from looking unsightly, mould spores can cause health issues, such as nasal congestion, reduced lung function and chronic conditions including asthma and allergies. Ventilation is the key to both health and energy conservation. For centuries, homes without ventilation never developed problems, so why go to extra expense and effort to ventilate our homes today? Unlike today’s homes, old houses didn’t have insulation in the walls, so fresh air could enter through the gaps, cracks and holes. Also, building materials were mostly produced using natural products, whereas many of today’s building and decorating materials contain chemicals that may be harmful to health. Good ventilation benefits Most houses are so draughty they’re impossible to heat, or they’re so well-sealed that the air becomes stale. The ideal balance is to make sure air can travel freely in
and out of your property without wasting money by letting heat escape.
Try these quick fixes to ventilate your home naturally: •Make sure you open the door and windows in the kitchen when you’re cooking to allow odours and gases to escape. If you have one, turn on the extractor fan too. •Always open the window when you’re having a bath or shower to prevent buildup of mould. If there’s an extractor fan, leave it on for at least half an hour after bathing to allow steam to escape. •Don’t hang clothes over radiators as this creates mould spores, which can quickly become airborne. If you must dry clothes inside, hang them on a clothes horse and open a window to ventilate the room. •Aim to air your home as often as you can. In winter, opening windows three times a day will make a real difference to the air quality in your home. •If your windows have vents, leave them open to allow stale air to escape and fresh air in. Don’t worry about cold air - leaving vents open will make little difference to the temperature in the house. Adding vents is a simple, relatively inexpensive way to ventilate your home and will help prevent problems such as dry rot and mould. Professional ventilation Many modern ventilation systems are capable of removing dust particles and other allergens, as well as improving indoor air quality. These include Heat Recovery Units, which maintain stable humidity levels, removing condensation and mould.
Stale air is drawn out as it passes over a heat exchanger, which recovers the heat from the outgoing air in order to warm the incoming fresh air. Passive ventilation uses the natural buoyancy of hot air and wind to encourage airflow through the property. The positioning of vents is important to make use of positive pressure from wind to encourage air movement through the house. Passive Stack Ventilation (PSV) uses natural forces to ventilate a house by installing stacks and ducts which draw warm, moist air through grilles from a bathroom or kitchen and out through the roof. Positive Input Ventilation (PIV) works by drawing in fresh, filtered air via a unit that’s usually installed in the loft. The units control humidity levels and remove indoor air pollutants, such as carbon monoxide and radon gas. If you feel your home is in need of a ventilation makeover, consider contacting a specialist to review your home’s requirements.
Council provides grants to improve home heating Newark & Sherwood District Council currently has grant funding available to help local residents on low incomes to repair or replace inadequate heating systems. If you or someone you know is on a low income and suffering with a long term health condition made worse by living in a cold home, the council may be able to help thanks to the Warm Homes on Prescription scheme.
Last year Newark & Sherwood District Council supported more than 30 home owners (and two tenants renting from private landlords), to make their home warmer, potentially avoiding unnecessary hospital admissions due to cold-related illnesses. A Newark resident who recently benefitted from the scheme said: “I suffer with mobility problems so spend
a lot of time at home and feel the cold. My old back boiler broke down last Christmas. I couldn’t afford to repair or replace it and I was getting a bit depressed with the situation so phoned the Council – they were brilliant. Blidworth & District Historical MP Mark Spencer supports Blidworth & Heritage Society The December meeting began with Chairman Alan Higgins conducting an open forum in which he informed members of our new website which is in the process of being revised and of the questions and enquiries that we receive from people attempting to discover information about relatives and friends who had connections with Blidworth and district. Some of these were put to our membership and some useful information was shared. Time permitting, this is likely to become a feature of future meetings.
Corner. We are now pleased to announce that both the Blidworth Parish Council and the Notts County Council have given their approval. Designed by our Society, the plaque has been supplied and generously donated by 'Offscreen Graphics' based at Crewe Close, Blidworth. It will shortly be installed onto the planter that stands between the pavement and the car park. Hopefully, many people will see this and enquire about James Prior; we will be only to pleased to answer.
Alan also congratulated our member Robert Bradley, who is to be awarded an Honorary Degree from the University of Nottingham for outstanding success and distinction. Former Mining Surveyor Robert Bradley is now a historian and an authority on the subject of coal mining. He has written many articles for mining magazines, has produced several publications on the subject, and has nine volumes held in the archives of the British Library. We look forward to seeing official photos of Bob receiving his 'Master of Letters Degree' in July.
Perhaps the highlight of the evening was when Sheila Hall put together a friendly quiz that became quite competitive during the answers session. The eventual winner was finally decided upon by using a tiebreaker. Being the beginning of the festive season we entered into the spirit and had our end of year 'fuddle' with 'nibbles' and the odd drink. This was most enjoyable and a good time was had by all. Our next meetings are as follows: •Please note that there is no meeting in January. •February 5th 2019 - Lily Ann Dawes and a Cabinet of Curiosity. A Story of both the origins of the British Museum and the Duchess of Portland. •March 5th 2019 - This month will be the occasion of our Annual General Meeting followed by Steve Wright, (not the one 'in the afternoon') and his talk entitled, Beautiful Britain. LOCAL Member of Parliament, Mark Spencer, visited a number of small businesses in the Sherwood Constituency to mark ‘Small Business Saturday’. Discussing his support for small and local businesses, MP Mark Spencer said they are “the backbone of the British economy. Nearly 16 million people in the UK are employed by small businesses, which is an absolutely huge number.” “Small business Saturday is designed to emphasis, promote and support small and local businesses across the country, which is a fantastic idea and something I’m absolutely more than happy to do.” As part of his campaign to promote small businesses across Sherwood, Mark visited ‘Bison IBC Ltd’, based in Blidworth. Bison is the foremost UK manufacturer of Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBC’s) in the UK, and are the only UK based manufacturer of stainless steel IBC’s, and have in their range a number of unique and patented products. Discussing the company, Mark said it was “great that such a specific industry is based right here in the middle of Sherwood. He and I are both from a practical background”. Local MP Mark Spencer organises litter pick in Rainworth MARK Spencer, The Member of Parliament for Sherwood, organised a community litter pick in Rainworth. The MP, who organised the event as part of his ongoing campaign to help clean up litter across the whole constituency, said he was “really pleased to be able to organise the litter pick in Rainworth.” “I’ve organised several litter picks now all across the constituency, such as in Bilsthorpe and Calverton, and they’re always really positive. It’s great to be able to get out with your boots and high vis jackets on, and just crack on!”
“I also want to thank the ladies that gave up their time to volunteer with my team on the day.”
When asked why he had chosen to organise the litter pick in Rainworth, the MP explained how a constituent in Rainworth had contacted Mark to complain about litter in the Village, so Mark decided to take some litter pickers and his team into Rainworth and spend the morning litter picking. Mark has organised a number of upcoming litter picks for the new year across the constituency. Having a ball in memory of Cazi A DETERMINED fundraiser has smashed his five-year target to collect £20,000 in memory of his wife. Mike Farley, 62, of Ravenshead, who was head of service at Mansfield District Council, managing the engineers’ and architects’ departments, has taken part in five Shine Night Walks in London in aid of Cancer Research UK. His wife, Carol (Cazi), who also worked at the council, died from secondary breast cancer five years ago. As well as collecting £2,200 from his fifth night-time marathon-distance walk, Mike also organised a Shine 4 Cazi Ball, which raised a further £5,700. It took his total raised for the cancer charity to £24,900. Mike said: “I was astounded at how much I managed to raise. “I have smashed my original £20,000 target.” He said the weather was not looking good for his Shine marathon walk. “It looked like it was going to be very wet so I wasn’t looking forward to powerwalking in heavy rain for six hours plus,” he added. “But I think Cazi came to the rescue as miraculously it stopped raining just before the start, then began again shortly after we crossed the finish line just after 4am.”

More than 150 people attended the ball, which included music from The Hypertones, at the Derbyshire Hotel, South Normanton.
“I have been astounded with the support I have received over the last five years and how much together we have managed to raise to help support Cancer Research UK in its ongoing quest to beat breast cancer and create a lasting legacy in Cazi’s name.
Mike said: “My inaugural Shine 4 Cazi Ball in aid of Cancer Research UK went very well with 150 people attending. The atmosphere was fantastic and everyone seemed to enjoy it.
“I am grateful to the many local businesses who have supported me this year with sponsorship or items for the raffle and charity auction.”
Mike said Cazi was the inspiration for his fundraising. “I am sure Cazi is with me every step of the way,” he said. “Her inspiration and determination gives me the strength to take on the Shine every year. “She was my soulmate, a truly inspirational person who always had time for everyone and lived life to the full.”

£50,000 grants on offer to help improve lives GRANTS of up to £50,000 for projects and schemes that improve lives, champion heritage and support communities are available from Nottinghamshire County Council’s Local Improvement Scheme Capital Fund.

Bilsthorpe Heritage Museum On Wednesday, 14th November, two representatives attended a Newark & Sherwood Tourist Action Group Meeting at the “Robin Hood Theatre”, Averham, after which there was an opportunity for a guided tour of the theatre. Thank you to everyone who supported our pre-Christmas Coffee Morning on Saturday, 17th November. Altogether over £800 was raised. Special thanks to everyone who donated goods to sell and raffle and tombola prizes, especially Messrs. Strawsons, Bilsthorpe, Tesco, New Ollerton and Enva, Bilsthorpe for their generosity. Thank you also to all our helpers on the day and those who helped “behind the scenes” and those who helped us set-up. We could not function without all this support. Member, Brian Jackson, gave a

We also appreciate the support given to our stalls at Blidworth Christmas Lights event and Bilsthorpe Welfare Christmas Lights event. On Tuesday afternoon, 20th November, we were pleased to welcome Year 6 children from Bilsthorpe “Flying High” Academy, who came to see an exhibition of their work , researching the lives of four Bilsthorpe servicemen, who died during World War I. The children also looked at artefacts from both World Wars. They were very interested and asked some in-depth questions. On Wednesday evening, 28th November,
three Members attended an evening of Mining Poetry, Prose & Song at the City Arts Centre, Nottingham, organised by Mining Historian, Dr. David Amos and Head of Linguistics at Nottingham Trent University, Dr. Natalie Braber as part of the “Pit Talk” project.
On Friday, 7th December, Members enjoyed a Christmas Lunch at the” Dukeries”, Edwinstowe. Thanks are due to the staff of the” Dukeries” and to event organiser, Linda Goodman, to whom a vote-of-thanks was given by Chairman, George Cooper. Abbey Gates Primary School news Amazing Artwork Year 6 have been working hard on producing some magnificent artwork inspired by their topic on Charles Darwin.

Remarkable Runners The runners of Abbey Gates Primary School did exceptionally well over a three race championship between all of the Nottinghamshire schools. Everyone gave their all during the races. In this championship we are proud to report that the girls were fantastic managing to do very well against all of the other competing schools. The boys also did ran sensationally doing well in the teams and as individuals. Overall Jude Ryan came 1st with Jacob Nugent closely following in 2nd place. Everyone is extremely proud of them all. It’s still panto time — oh yes it is... CHRISTMAS may be over and the annual pantomime at the Palace Theatre, Mansfield, is about to finish its run, on 6th January. But there is still time to get involved in the seasonal fun with two amateur companies staging pantomimes at the theatre in January. Westfield Folkhouse will be giving its take on Aladdin, from 12th to 20th January, and Mansfield Hospitals Theatre Troupe is putting on Beauty And The Beast, from 26th January to 2nd February. Last year the hospitals theatre troupe’s Cinderella production raised more than £5,000 for local good causes, including
S.H.E. UK, Make A Wish and King’s Mill Hospital urology clinic. Tickets are priced £10/£8. Westfield Folkhouse will be staging 13 performances of Aladdin, including two Sunday morning shows and weekend matinees.

Bengals head to Mansfield Superbowl On Tuesday 18th December the whole club visited the Mansfield Superbowl in the evening for the annual club get together of bowling and food, taking 90 plus children, this was a real spectacle and fun experience for the players to interact and have fun with their team mates before the Christmas festivities, We would like to thank the Coaches, Parents and all the children for coming and making this a fantastic evening, We really can’t believe how quickly this period has come round again and we look forward to the next one in 2019! Club Legends Photo Shoot: We had a fantastic evening in December where Club Legends came into visit us and photograph the Coaches and children in their home Orange and Black Kits in Premier League Style poses! The photographs are simply stunning and in particular the Fifa style prints are on another level!

U10s & U12s visit Sheffield Steelers Sheffield Steelers Ice Hockey was our second trip as we headed up the M1 to see the Steelers in action at the Sheffield Arena. Dressed in our orange uniforms we really provided the noise for the home team in roaring them on in their league match. This was a first time experience for a lot of the children and they really enjoyed the atmosphere and the experience of watching a new sport live in action. The club hired a mini bus and had a fantastic evening with the boys being fully submerged in the action of the evening. This as a club was our first venture to watch Ice Hockey but we had so much fun I am sure we will be back again very soon! Baby Bengals We run football sessions for chil-dren aged 3-4 years called Baby Bengals. This is held every Wednesday 5-6pm indoors at Blidworth
Oaks Primary School. Sessions are all fun and realistic to the game and is our feeder group into competitive football.
