Project Brief/ Introduction Project Overview

In this project students will be required to work through several exercises to create a framework for a mobile application. Students will be required to show a cumulative understanding of typographic design. New opportunities for exploring hierarchical grids will be explored.

Project Outcomes

Students will be responsible for: 1.) A finished comprehensive conceptual plan for a walking/wandering app. 1.1) The app must provide an interface for the various media made available with a mobile device; i.e., video, sound, geo location, etc. 2.) A digital process book and blog showing typographic, physical, historical, and psychogeographic research. 3.) A 12 page printed process book sewn using a pamphlet binding process.

conceptual Strategies I used wood as my background because a lot of bar/food counters are wood. I thought it gave it a rustic feel since everything is Fredonia is pretty old. I used the font Chalk Outline for my headers because I had seen a lot of chalk work when I was looking for inspiration and I felt like that was a big part of bars/food as well. I chose to use Baskerville for my text because I thought it helped with the rustic look since it is a Old Style font.

I wanted to do a scrolling app instead of a regular one becuase I like the idea of tapping on the bar/ food you want to read about and about and then all the information opens up around the name. I put the drink stains around ‘Bars’ and fries and ‘Food’ because it makes more playful and I think it would make people want to use the app more.

8

design Strategies The wood helps show that you should scroll down because the wood is vertical. I like the Chalk Outline font for the titles because it looks like it is a part of the background instead of sitting on top of it. I used baskerville for the text because it helps with the rustic feel and it is easy to read.

I chose the scrolling app version because counters are long and I want the app to look like a counter. I added the cup marks to ‘Bars’ so you got the idea that you will be getting drinks and every bar has cup marks left on their counter from peoples drinks. I chose fries for ‘Food’ becuase that is the most common food you can get and everyone likes fries.

Street Meat is the Food! grossest place to get Burgers food while out but it is Tacos the cheapest. You don’t Fries buy this when you are anything but drunk.

Process Essay I started this project by going on a walk downtown and lookign at all the different shops. I finally decided to do my app on the night life in fredonia; what bars to go to and where to get food after the bars. The bars I chose are Old Main, Sunnys, Valentines, Lil Magills, EBC, BJs, Tullys, and Coughlans. The food places I chose are Marias, Street Meat, Calios, and Pdubs. I took pictures of the inside and outside of all the places, got the drink specials and menus for all my places. Then I had figure out how I wanted to design my app. I knew that I wanted to do a scrolling app but I didnt know how I wanted to do it. I spent a lot of time on pinterest trying to figure out how I wanted the layout to be. I figured out that I wanted the app to open when you tap on the names of everything and it would expand from there.

Figuring out what background I wanted to use was the hardest part of this whole project. I tried making it look like sponge paint, I made symbols and tiled them, I tried making it look like a chalk board, nothing was working. Then I thought of wood. Wood made me think of bars and counters. I chose to use a darker wood so everything on top of it would pop more. I still liked the chalk idea so I looked up some chalk fonts and found Chalk Outline, I chose it because it was the best one out of the ones I had seen and it just fit with what I wanted to do. I chose Baskerville for my text because I really like the numbers and I wanted an old style font but nothing boring and I think Baskerville is just that. When you can see just the bar and food names, I didn’t want it to be just wood behind it.

12

I thought about continuing with the chalk idea so I made it look like things had been previously erased and then the ‘new bars’ had just been written in. Once you tap on the bar or food, all the information on it shows up. I chose my color palette because I had been trying to choose between pink or blue and then I found one with both colors so I did that one. I liked the pink because it was easy to see again the dark woof and I like the blue because it is a nice contrast to the pink. I made all the information and drink specials in blue and then the food in pink so you could distinguish what things were.
