apples that have a lot of sugar, plus a certain amount of acid and tannins. These apples would taste horrible if you were to eat one. We have our own orchard so we can use proper cider apples. We want to own cider to be made naturally and simply; Which is also how we want our cider to taste. We think we’re doing a pretty good job at it.

History

-

People have been drinking cider in america since we arrived here in 1607. Johnny Appleseed wasn’t planting all his apples for eating, he was planting apples to make cider! Back then cider was safer to drink than water was. Sadly, Hard Cider went through a rough patch from 1840 until the 1990’s when microbrewerys started making hard cider again. As settlers started moving farther out west and German immegrants came over with beer, hard cider fell to the way-side because peo ple were getting a taste of something new and different. The Prohibition didn’t help at all either.

Process The apples are washed and then crushed to extract the juice. The apples are crushed multiples times to ensure then we get all of the juice out of the apples. Next, we put all the juice we have collected into large tanks to let the natural yeast in the cider begin turing the natural sugar in the cider, into alcohol. This process takes a few weeks. Occasionally, extract yeast or extra sugar is added to the batch if there isn’t enough (We do not do that). This is usually done when cider apples are unavailable. Once the cider has fermented for long enough, depending on what kind of cider is being made you can add cherry juice, hops, anything you want! It is then bottled, some carbonation is added and we ship it out for you to enjoy!

Today, many varieties of cider apples are no longer being grown in the U.S. Cider makers have been using cooking and dessert apples as a substitute, others are growing their own cider apples. Cider apples are starting to be grown more in orchards because hard cider is becoming more and more popular again.

Process Essay I chose to package hard cider for my senior project. I had originally wanted to brand a restaurant as my project, but that was too similar to the food truck I made last semester. I enjoyed this project and I’m glad I got to make labels because that is what got me into graphic design in the first place. There were many difficulties while doing this project, but I like the final result. I plan on working on this more until we have our senior show. I have always found labels very interesting as design pieces. I became interested in graphic design and decided to major in graphic design because I have always liked label design. I thought that it might be something I could enjoy doing and would be good at. We had not done too much label design in previous classes and I wanted to get a chance to try it out before I graduated and got into the real world. I do like label design, and I think it might be something I want to do. I also realized while doing this project that I am a minimalist and really enjoy minimalism. While I wish my life could have more minimalism in it, I could make my work as minimal as I like. It is very challenging making minimalist work. You need to make sure everything is aligned perfectly and everything is spaced out perfectly. Once you have done that, though, it always looks really clean and polished. It was challenging to line everything up really well, but it was also difficult figuring everything else out. Picking the colors was difficult because I wanted there to be visible cardboard on the packaging. I had to make sure the colors I used would not look too dull or washed out next to cardboard. I went through tons of different names. The main ones I went through were, Shocked mouse, Uptown, and I decided to go with Wickson. I chose Wickson because while I was researching cider apples, it said that wickson apples produced a sweet but tart and crisp hard cider. This is exactly what I wanted my cider to taste like. I think that many of the labels I made are good and I am really happy with the one I chose to use for my cider. I chose to basically use the same design/layout for my packaging as my labels so everything works well together. The infographic was the most difficult part or this project. I never wanted to create one and so it took me a long time to get started on it and everything I made did not look good. I am not happy with the final infographic I have now and I am going to work on that a lot more before the senior show.
