NEW GATEWAY TO BEIJING

YOUR JOURNEY TO TIMELESS WONDERS AWAITS

Editor’s Note

Here we are at the end of 2024 and what a whirlwind of another turn around the sun this year has been! As we started to look at producing the last issue of this year, it was impossible to ignore the biggest thing that appears in everyone's mind around this time - travel. Whether it's about exciting new destinations abroad or somewhere closer to home, we had the most fun compiling the collection of recommendations in our extended BIG Beyond section which includes much coveted food experiences at Na Oh restaurant in Singapore's Hyundai Center, and we hope that you are inspired to visit at least one of these locations either now or put a pin on it for the future! At home, we took a quick road trip to the Labi Coffee Farm, thanks to NBT and the new Yaris Cross Hybrid EV model. It was very exciting to experience travel using sustainable technology.

And a sweeter ending there never was with our desserts themed Big Appetite that showcases the island's best places to indulge in sugary treats that come from all over the world. There are decadent chocolate drinks, comforting Asian desserts like the classic ABC, or a crisp Liege waffle topped with lovely whipped cream to take your fancy. If you're set on being home bound during the holidays season, you'll still be able to transport yourselves with our curated list of movies in this edition's Big Screen. Wherever you choose to be, we hope you've had a wonderful year and an even better one ahead! It's always a pleasure to hear from you and we welcome any feedback about what you'd like to see in future editions.

Power and Grace in the Capital

What a glorious occasion to celebrate! The 9th World Wushu Junior Championships touched down in Brunei for the first time ever - approximately 50 countries flew in to participate in this global sporting event, and it was a special occasion not just because of the inaugural hosting by Brunei but also for many of our budding national junior athletes who made their competitive debut here. Known for its impressive displays of

power, gracefulness and artistry, the competitive martial arts category has grown in popularity and recognition across the world.

It's now an official sport at regional and international competitions like the Asian Games and Southeast Asian (SEA) Games. Competitive Wushu is practiced through individual routines (taolu) where there are further subdivisions with fake props like swords and

spears used in choreography, and as a full-contact combat sport (sanda). Globally, the biennial World Wushu Junior Championships are the paramount of every Wushu athlete’s year. Brunei's own Wushu champion, Basma Lachkar, found international success and recognition for Brunei with her impressive gold medal at the World Games event - the first ever

such win for a Bruneian Wushu athlete at the time! This time, it was our junior athletes' time to shine and did they ever!

The exciting week was filled with intense displays of agility, skilful performances that were thrilling to be able to watch in person, and with a stadium filled with the loud clamor of supportive spectators it's clear that live sports events like this are a wonderful opportunity for the community to come together and show some love for their nation!

Oh So Famous!

Invited guests were thrilled with the opportunity to meet with famed Filipino lighting designers, Venzon Lighting, at a dinner event hosted by the Ambassador of the Philippines Embassy in Brunei to promote the lauded Filipino design and interiors expo, Manila FAME. Her Excellency, Marian Jocelyn Tirol-Ignacio, said in her welcoming remarks, that she hoped the evening would “be the start of new collaborations, new networks, and new opportunities to bring the beauty and brilliance of Philippine design to Brunei and beyond.” A local developer present said he had made it to last year’s expo, and was looking forward to seeing what the 2024 showcase would feature. “It’s so massive, there’s just so much

stuff. You really need the time to go around and look - and I suggest to anyone going, even if it’s just to see what’s out there and be inspired creatively - get the VIP packages because it’s really worth it and saves you time.” The dinner event brought together various esteemed members of the design, architecture and development sectors, who happily took the opportunity over dinner to speak with Jackie and Cris Venzon. The husband-and-wife duo have a combined experience of over 30 years in lighting design, engineering and manufacturing, and have award-winning designs such as the ‘Infinity Pendant’ from their Cherry Blossom collection - a version of which was present to view during the event. Manila Fame takes place on October 17-19 at the World Trade Center in Pasay City, Philippines.

Animal Adventures at ISB

Life-size frogs hopping away, fish on land and talking dogs made for an evening of excitement at the International School Brunei (ISB) production of ‘The Adventures of Doolittle’. The school production was a delightful musical based on the classic story of a quirky veterinarian with an extraordinary gift of being able to talk to animals. It featured a cast and crew of some 200 ISB primary and secondary students, and teachers and staff, with the stage adaptation written especially for

ISB. The story whisked the audience away on a journey from a quaint English village to exotic locations as Dr. Dolittle embarked on a quest to find the legendary Great Pink Sea Snail.

It was a night filled with laughter, music, and the power of understanding creatures great and small, while also exploring the wonders of friendship, empathy, and the importance of understanding and respecting all living beings. Mr. Dominic Morley, Executive Principal and Chief Executive Officer of ISB said, “This play, brought to life by the

Mindanao’s

Taste of Magic

dedication and talent of our wonderful, hard-working pupils, is a testament to ISB’s commitment to inclusive international education and excellence. Throughout the rehearsals, the children have demonstrated incredible enthusiasm, passion and tenacity to develop the skills and courage to perform.” The school production coincides with ISB’s 60th anniversary year, marking six decades of inclusive academic excellence since the school was first established in 1964.

The ISB musical production was sponsored by Standard Chartered Bank Brunei, Brunei Fertilizer Industries Sdn Bhd, Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd, Royal Brunei Culinary, Poni Divers, GoMamam, Ezy Printing, and D’Sunlit Sdn Bhd.

With the smell of burning coconut meat filling the kitchen, an intrusive thought creeps into the back of my mind. Does the house have a fire alarm? Or insurance. Our host for the afternoon, Filipino-Bruneian fashion designer and entrepreneur Anyati Abdullah Orcullo, on the other hand, seems to have no intrusive thoughts at all. Her happy chatter and shared explanations to the other guests in the back distract me enough to leave the burning coconut alone. Chef Datu Shariff Khaled Pendatun knows what he’s doing, after all. He’s on the last leg of a cultural exchange trip organised in partnership with the Philippines Embassy in Brunei and the Philippines National Commission for Culture and the Arts (Sentro Rizal), to Brunei. He spent time with students from the Laksamana College of Business’ Culinary School students, members of the public and diplomatic community, showcasing the culinary arts of Muslim

Mindanao. Captivating them with his profound knowledge and passion for traditional dishes, there were varieties from Luzon, the Visayas, and Mindanao, where Chef Pendatun is from. The highlight? It had to be Tiyula Itum, a traditional Mindanaoan black beef soup utilising the aforementioned burnt coconut meat, which surprised diners with its deep savouriness and rich flavours. At the heart of it all, the concept of ‘dulang’ - a traditional way of serving food on circular platters symbolising community and generosity - truly shone through on this wonderful occasion. ••

I’ll Bring You Flowers

Elegance and creativity were on full display during the Sogestu Ikebana Workshop at the Lifelong Learning Centre (L3C) in Lambak Kanan! Ninety participants joined the workshop on the true art of flower arrangement from certified Sogetsu Ikebana instructors from Japan. This was also under the arrangement by the Asahi Cross Cultural Exchange (ACCI).

Like many Japanese traditions, Ikebana is rooted in principles of harmony, balance and simplicity, featuring a minimalistic use of blooms, leaves and branches to create lines and spaces within an arrangement. ‘Anytime, Anywhere, by anyone’, is the core theory

It was all hands on deck for the 29th Consumer Fair in Brunei as people came out in droves to check out the latest brands and old favourites. Master Instructor Maeda Sanae comes from a long heritage of Ikebana practitioners, and has dedicated her life to the traditional Japanese art.

Ikebana keeps the mind sharp even while the body becomes slow, according to Maeda. The creativity and attention required to construct Ikebana is both freeing focused. Effortlessly articulate with a graceful demeanour in her wise age, it certainly seems true. Dan Lain-Lain Exhibition

If you managed to catch the Dan Lain Lain exhibition at the Creative Space Gallery recently, you were likely left with many more questions than you arrived with. A mark of the best kind of art, for sure. Thought provoking and exploratory, the exhibition invited viewers to explore beyond conventional artistic boundaries, and open conversations on overlooked aspects of society. The group show was available to physically view for a limited time to invited guests before moving to a digital platform where it is viewable to the public. Led by Minority Agenda, an initiative that advocates indigenous and marginalized communities in Brunei in Social Change, and curated by its founder Elroy Ramantan, this insightful and exciting art show “hopes to give awareness on the common social issue that different Borneo region has and in bringing conversations and advocate for positive community change”. The exhibit is also supported by the U.S. Embassy Small Grants Program. ‘Dan Lain-lain’ translates from Malay as ‘And Others’; this play on the idea of 'the other' and separation from mainstream sees a diverse group of minority artists from different regions of Borneo showcase thoughtful art

Brunei has achieved a new national record for planting 210 corals in local waters, Poni Divers revealed at the Ocean Week Brunei 2024 conference recently. The event was officiated by the Brunei Book of Records as the most corals planted at a single time, and done under the Big Blue Hope initiative. Producing tangle results towards improving the sultanate’s actionable practices and policies on ocean sustainability and care is a key takeaway from the event, according to PONI. One success for marine conservation efforts was the launch of the LAUT Brunei (Looking After Underwater Treasures of Brunei) Ambassador Programme. This new initiative is aimed at recruiting and training local ambassadors to advocate for ocean sustainability within their communities. There was also the launch of the world’s first LAUT Midi reef ball - a reef ball especially designed for Brunei waters - officiated by Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism Dato Seri Setia Dr Abdul Manaf Metussin. Many attendees expressed their approval at the relevance of this year's topics and

using unconventional art mediums. These post-modern artworks shed light and commentary on social issues that general societies tend to shy away from. With the huge success and glowing feedback Borneo Altered Natives has received from this show, it’s clear that their voices are loud and clear.

speakers, with a general consensus that they sincerely hoped the Ocean Week event would continue to spread awareness and change.

“We have delved into critical topics,... we have shared successes, faced hard truths, and most importantly, we have envisioned a future where our oceans are healthy, thriving, and resilient,’ observed Anna Aziz, Business Development Officer of PONI Group, in her closing speech. Ocean Week Brunei 2024 is an initiative by Poni Divers and Poni Foundation in partnership with the Department of Fisheries at the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism as part of the Brunei Mid-Year Conference and Exhibition (MYCE) 2024. Community engagement is a key factor in the success of such conferences and with a stellar turnout of participants across all activities and events planned, it’s clear that the feeling is mutual.

Faith & Devotion SIGHT OF

Lovers of art have a treat on their hands! A first-ever in Brunei, the ‘Faith and Devotion’ exhibit brings a touch of the international art scene to the nation. Featuring 19th century Orientalist art from prominent artists such as master painter and sculptor Jean-Léon Gérôme, Rudolf Ernst from Austria and Italian Hermann Corrodi, ‘Faith and Devotion’ paints a historical tapestry of figurative art celebrating the islamic world. Claude Piening, Senior Director Head of 19th Century European Paintings at Sotheby’s, noted in his opening remarks that this inaugural exhibit was hoped to be “enlightening and educational” for both the local community and foreign visitors alike.

The theme ‘Faith and Devotion’ explores depictions of the many parts of the Muslim

world termed as ‘the Orient’ in the 19th Century and sheds an important light on Islamic culture and religion at a time when artists from Europe, America and Ottoman empire (later Turkiye) were inspired by the culture and religious practices of the region bordering the Mediterranean and further east. His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Mateen was in attendance to officiate the opening of ‘Faith and Devotion’, accompanied by Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Anak Isteri Anisha Rosnah binti Adam. Curated by world-renowned art broker Sotheby’s, the art exhibition is open for viewing at the Balai Khazanah Islam Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah and will run until January 2025 according to the current schedule.

Singapore So Shiok!

The Singapore Food Festival returned once again to the Anjung Saujana restaurant at the Brunei International Airport recently, with crowds flocking to enjoy the various special menu items and buffet that was on offer during the promotion period. The festival also coincides with the celebration of 40 years of diplomatic relations between Brunei and Singapore this year. “As we celebrate this milestone, it is fitting that we reflect on our

shared values and friendship. The Singapore Food Festival, with its diverse selections, symbolises the spirit of cultural exchange and friendship that defines our relationship with Singapore,” said Dk Hjh Norulnazura Binti Pg Hj Hassim from Royal Brunei Catering in her opening speech for the event. Terence Voon, Executive Director for Southeast Asia, was present to represent the Singapore Tourism Board, mentioned how happy he was to have the support of Bruneians in building Singapore’s tourism avenues, particularly the Halal and Family Friendly travel sectors.

You Better WAK This Way in Miri!

The highly anticipated month-long What about Kuching festival returned with a focus that saw more satellite festivals cropping up in further Sarawak locations for the first time. Since its inaugural in 2017, the What About Kuching (WAK) Festival Movement has become an annual celebration that showcases the boundless hidden creativity inherent in the community. Coming to its sixth edition in 2024, the WAK team with the encouragement of its main sponsor, the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak, engaged the Sibu and Miri City Councils with the idea to stage WAK Satellite Festivals at these two major cities. Press from the WAK community stated that these satellite festivals are to become starting points of feature calendar events in these respective cities for years to come, and that “It is hoped that the creatives from the many communities will come forth to embrace both the WAK Sibu and WAK Miri Satellite Festivals as their very own”. Judging by the huge response that both cities received from high attendance numbers and vibrant crowd atmosphere, these events are definitely one to mark on the calendar for 2025!

KK Restaurant Week

They say food is the fastest way to the heart, and the Kota Kinabalu Restaurant Week certainly charmed its way into ours with its splendid roster of Sabahan food and beverage purveyors. The first of its kind, the KK Restaurant Week showcased over 20 establishments across Sabah with limited edition course menus that highlighted their incredible diversity and skills. Mind-boggling fine dining shone through dishes like ‘Night’, a contemporary dessert of milk ice cream, black sesame ganache and yuba chips, from chef Kong Han of the modern seafood-forward restaurant IN; OITOM’s Borneo Vanilla Gelato was an excellent study on locavorism and simplicity, full of heady vanilla bean grown locally in the foothills of Kota Kinabalu’s mountain farmlands. From Fusion to classic Asian and Western cuisines, there was truly so much to eat and so little time!

The ’Restaurant Week’ concept originated from New York City in 1992. Tim Zagat, creator of the Zagat Survey, and Joe Baum, a famous New York restaurateur created the promotional event first as a lunch-only affair scheduled to coincide with the Democratic National Convention to draw visitors, reporters, and politicians attending the event to local restaurants. Its huge success has meant a global adoption of the event concept. This year’s KK Restaurant Week initiative

was spearheaded by JUMPA PR and Media Agency and made possible through the collaborative efforts of restaurant owners and partners, with Sabah Tourism Board as an official partner. Together, they aimed to showcase the culinary excellence and vibrancy of Kota Kinabalu to locals and visitors alike. “Our intention was to synergize with key players in the food and beverage scene and for one week, curate a menu that showcases the variety of high quality dining experiences in Kota Kinabalu to regional holiday makers. There’s truly something for everyone.”

Missed out on this year’s KK Restaurant Week? Check @kk.restaurantweek for their updates on the next event that promises to be full of food, drink and more merriness for everyone!

MAKING MAGIC MOVIE

Don’t be shocked by the sight of people running around Bandar city with cameras or dressed up in costume this December - it’s just the annual Brunei Film Blitz, the nation’s very own film festival! The event is closing in on a decade of thrilling audiences with glitz, glamour and amazing films from local and regional participants, and 2024 promises to be even more exciting. The Brunei Film Blitz started with establishing a community of local filmmakers that share film experiences and techniques to eventually produce their own short films, which back in 2017 was a difficult task. “As organisers we weren't sure of the filmmaking level in Brunei so we held a workshop to teach the basics of cinematic language and visual storytelling,” Siti Kamaluddin explained. The award-winning director, filmmaker and musician, grew up with dreams of making movies but found the journey difficult due to lack of access to support programs or skill-based workshops in the Sultanate.

Cut to 2024 and the Brunei Film Blitz is one of the most anticipated events of the year, with filmmakers from all of the region descending upon the city of Bandar Seri Begawan for a hectic 96 hours. Last year, the event counted two feature film screenings in major local cinemas, international guests, and outreach programs such as “Best of Borneo” which brought festival directors from prominent

film festivals around the island to Brunei. CineSparks, their youth cinema development program, which is dedicated to the promotion of intelligent and ethical film journalism and film criticism, also cemented the growth of Brunei’s film-making and media capabilities. The inclusivity of regional films is also something the Brunei Film Blitz team is proud to have. “ It's such a treat to screen a blockbuster Malaysian, Thai or Filipino film from the 70’s or 80’s to a multi-generational audience. The films are a time machine as grandparents share recollections with their grandchildren, while simultaneously creating new memories. That’s the magic of a shared cinematic experience,” explained Alex Fischer, the Dean of Mahakarya Institute of the Arts Asia.

Magic is wonderful, of course, but in times where economy is a key contention for future development, why does building up our own film and creative industry even matter? “It’s a complete economic ecosystem. No matter the size of the production, there will always be a combination of business, art, culture and technology,” said Siti. Professional productions also contribute to other non-film industry sectors such as hospitality, transportation and fabrication, she added, pointing out that South Korea is a great case study for how a fledgling entertainment industry can become an economic powerhouse in just a few decades. “There is money in entertainment. People are always looking for distractions from real life.”

Ready for Adventure with

There’s no better time for a mini-adventure than the weekend and thanks to NBT Toyota Brunei and The All-New Yaris Cross Hybrid EV, we got to visit a destination that’s been on our list for some time now, and experience the amazing ride and tech behind a Hybrid EV vehicle!

KOPI, KOPI, KOPI

Imagine a huge expanse of coffee plants, lush greenery and nothing but you, nature and some darn good coffee. Sounds great, right? Labi Coffee Farm is probably the most underrated destination in Brunei! This budding Liberica coffee farm with over 10,000 coffee trees is the heart work of Yong Khian Fook, a cheery local and second generation farmer who was already initiated to the fields as a kid and fully employed to his family’s farm and small convenience store by his teen years. The land was originally planted with acres of juicy local limau manis (green-skin oranges) that were unfortunately devastated by a crop virus. After trying to repopulate the land with different types of produce, coffee beans were the most successful and the Labi Coffee Farm was born. While the coffee farm was initially not open to the public, it wasn’t long before demand started to grow for those who wanted to experience the coffee being produced at Labi Coffee Farm. NBT Toyota Brunei kindly lent us The All-New Yaris Cross Hybrid EV for the journey to the farm

so we could check out the great additional features the Hybrid EV version has!

ON THE ROAD AGAIN

We all have those memories as kids - tucked in the back of the family car, waiting to get through a crazy traffic jam or queue at the border. Depending on the car, you either felt every bump in the road or had the time of your life imagining you were the secondary driver in the Formula 1 races. Even with the Yaris Cross Hybrid EV, it’s surprising that a mid-tier car can still deliver such a smooth and seamless drive on hybrid mechanisms and all of this at an economical price point! I’m not sure what we were expecting since this is our first real experience driving a Hybrid EV car, but best believe our expectations were exceeded on this test drive. With a rapid pick up that takes you from 0 to 100 in around 10 seconds, and a load-absorbing transmission, zipping along to your destination never felt easier. Of course, the Yaris Cross has a powerful specifications like a 36 liter fuel tank with 1.5 liter Hybrid engine, that

@Labi Coffee Farm

can take to almost 550km on full! Both versions of the Yaris Cross contain the 4-cylinder engine, with an Inline DOHC with Dual VVT-i. We had heaps of fun testing the limits of the Hybrid EV on the long and winding road towards the Labi Coffee Farm, which is tucked all the way at the end of the Labi Road, closer to the Teraja longhouse- another great driving adventure to take! And thanks to the huge Panoramic Moon Roof there’s always a great view ahead in the Yaris Cross Hybrid EV.

BEAUTY IN THE DETAILS

One thing that is notable about the Hybrid EV is how quiet it isno engine noise cutting into your Spotify playlist or even letting you know the car is on. Just the push of a button and a little green ‘Ready’ sign on the wide and easy to read dashboard tells you it’s time to go! This compact SUVstyle car gives you the freedom to roam thanks to the self-charging battery (really, you don’t have to do anything!) that automatically switches between EV mode and normal petrol mode to save you the most on every adventure. That means more time making memories and less time doing boring things like waiting to buy petrol at the station. We barely

Cruise Control keep you notified of anything dangerous around the car - the DRC is especially useful if you are *ahem* prone to checking your phone at traffic lights or in jams, with its very vocal reminder that the car in front is moving! For long rides, the Lane Departure Warning is a definite lifesaver, beeping to let us know when we were drifting to the side and even automatically adjusting the wheel to keep us in line.

scratched the surface on the fuel meter with a round-trip from Bandar to Labi - and of course, we had to stop halfway in Tutong for some famous Rojak at KK Koya on the way back, and make some time for photo ops. As someone who lives outside of Bandar and always has a boot full of things, this is a great commuting car and one of the safest in the market. The Kick sensor Power Back Door feature is so useful, you might just want to shop or do more to keep using it!

SAFETY’S ON

Even on exciting explorations around the capital or island, the Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid EV has you covered in every way. They’ve really packed the full gamut of safety features into this compact SUV-style vehicle and it shows on the open road. Six airbags, seat belt reminders for all 5 seats, hill start assist control, vehicle stability control and anti-lock braking systems are just some of the standard safety features available across both models. They’ve gone the extra mile with Toyota Safety Sense features packed into the new Yaris Cross Hybrid EV and it’s still nifty enough to tuck around corners like a pro, with features like the Lane Departure Warning, Pre Collision System and Adaptive

FRESH FROM THE FARM

Although it was not quite yet the season for coffee berries to be ripe at the farm when we went (the season typically starts in October), we were still able to sample the local brew thanks to their ready stock of processed beans which are sold in Brunei via the farm, their pop-up cafe at the Ministry of Home Affairs mini gallery, as well as being shipped overseas to cafes in Japan. Mr. Yong is also planning to open a cafe at his horticultural office in Rimba Horticulture Center soon. Although there’s plenty of space at the farm’s indoor venue, we opted for a little al-fresco vibe just outside the building and what a scene! Brunei is of course home to some of the most beautiful greenscapes in the world but Labi has a similar ‘Jurassic Park’esque feel to Temburong. With the rugged background of a towering emerald mountain behind us and the (very hot) blue skies above, this was such a lovely day trip to take over the weekend. With the flavourful pour over that farmhand and barista Faid had made for us and the trusty Yaris Cross Hybrid EV to get us there, it really couldn’t have been a better road trip!

School's Out, Let's Go Holiday!

Are you panicked because holidays are just around the corner and you’re still not sure about what to do or where to go? Whether it’s a seven-day break, three weeks of time off or even a month-long holiday, finding something to do on the island is going to be a piece of cake with our Family-Friendly Holidays guide!

SUN, SAND & SEA

We’re on an island so staycation ideas revolving around the ocean are bound to make it on the list! Now, we know not everybody is a friend of the seaside so if this is not your vibe, skip ahead to the more land-based ideas. If you’re still here, listen up. Borneo’s got some stellar island adventures to be had and sometimes it just takes the willingness to try something different. East Kalimantan in particular is a hidden gem that you really need to try getting to once - and direct travel isn’t quite in place yet so if you’re short on time, closer spots in Malaysia-Borneo and Brunei will still give you a good saltwater fix. If you’re keen to make the trip regardless, Derawan Island and Sangalaki Island in the East Kalimantan island chain have great reputations for their marine biodiversity and turquoise blue waters for unparalleled world class diving and snorkelling. Derawan island is also considered the third best dive destination in the world!!

Want to stay closer to the water’s surface? Bruneians can check in with one of the marine companies like Oceanic Quest or Poni, who also offer water based activities like jetskiing, banana boats and island-hopping. There’s a lot of the coast to still discover and you may even find your own little beach atoll or sand spit to relax on! If you’re Sabah and Sarawak-based, there have been some excellent water activity vendors that have cropped up over the last few years! KK Yacht Rental, Sunbear Travel & Tours, North Borneo Cruises are some of the more prominent yacht and cruise rentals in Sabah, while Sailo.com and Sarawak River Cruise are fantastic options if you’re looking for a way to explore the incredible waters of Sarawak state.

PARKS & REC

Of course, an amusement park is a no-brainer when it comes to picking somewhere that the whole family will enjoy - with a variety of activities and attractions to suit every age, you’ll certainly enjoy a full day here. Jerudong Park is of course Brunei’s main and only amusement park so it’s the obvious choice here. If you’re just looking for a place to relax and hang out, there are plenty of great spots around the lawns you can picnic at. Catch the thrills and spills from a rollercoaster ride or a heart thumping seat on their giant swing that will even have the bravest of souls

@Jerudong Park Country Club

shaking. Cool off in the splash zone at the JP Waterpark , or head to the Little Kingdom Zoo that’s just outside the complex area. Furry friends are waiting to meet you and there are heaps of opportunities to feed and pet these unique animals.

Speaking of pets, The Noah pet cafe in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah is a wonderful place to go and get up close with unique furbabies like a chinchilla, prairie dogs and the ever-charming trash panda aka. Racoons. The owner of The Noah also has a sister farm in Donggongon, Penampang, which is a 30-minute drive from KK city centre. Perfect for those quick weekend getaways if you’re short on time and want to pack lots of activities in. National parks are a great way to enjoy some outdoor time and get out of the house without being too far away from creature comforts and Borneo is truly blessed with a ton of protected park areas that have great camping facilities that are great use even if you’re just heading there for the day.

The Matang Wildlife Centre in Sarawak is a wonderful park to take small and big kids to, for nature familiarisation. Far from being a zoo, this centre is home to endangered species such as orangutans who are rehabilitated and released into the forest around the centre. Matang Wildlife Centre also has rock pools, a swimming area, picnic spots, camping sites with scenic swimming spots and waterfalls, a viewing area and enclosures for viewing semi-wild animals.

Sky To Sea Kota Kinabalu

Sabah is a state full of wonderful adventures awaiting you; endless restaurants, entertainment venues, sandy white beaches, cultural landmarks and unique nature to discover. From the sky to the sea, there are incredible experiences to be had and when Kota Kinabalu is just a few hours away by car or less than by plane, there’s no excuse to not make it over for a little exploration! We’ve rounded up some of the best ways to explore Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, from the sea to the sky.

SITTIN’ ON TOP OF THE WORLD

Feel like you’re on top on the world at the highest mountain peak in Borneo and Malaysia! Ideally located in the renowned UNESCO Triple Crown Site (one of only two in the world!), Mount Kinabalu is a world-famous mountain trek you can achieve in just two days. Mount Kinabalu derives its name from the Kadazan-Dusun word, ‘Aki Nabalu’, meaning ‘the revered place of the dead’.

There are many fables and folklore of how Mount Kinabalu got its name - the indigenous Kadazan-Dusun believe upon death, spirits journey to the peak of Mount Kinabalu and rest there for a while before continuing on to the eternal world. It’s long been a place of spirituality for the local Sabahan tribes and many festivals are held to honour the mountain. It’s a towering monolith at 4,095 metres (13,435 feet) that exudes a truly magical atmosphere. Rocky granite peaks shrouded in wispy clouds,

located. Typically, people will rest for the night before taking one of two trails (the Kota Belud or Ranau Trail) to Low’s Peak for the presunrise summit.

dissipate on clear days to reveal its sharp and recognizable profile that was carved by glaciers long gone.

TIMPOHON AND THE IRON ROAD

Timpohon Gate is the starting point of the ascent and the trail up is truly beginnerfriendly due to well laid path that is clear all the way. No special climbing skills are needed so if you’re fit and in good health it’s worth a go. Resting ‘pondoks’ or huts are available along the way and there are plenty of stunning viewpoints for photo opportunities. As you ascend, there will be a noticeable change in the natural vegetation. Mossy forest and bamboo trees dot the way up Mount Kinabalu, abundant with cheery Rhododendrons and twisting pitcher plants. Ubah Shelter at 2,081.4 m, is where you’ll find one of Borneo’s most unusual pitcher plants – the Nepenthes lowii. All packages for climbing Mount Kinabalu end the first part of the trek at Panar Laban rest stop (3,273 metres), where all the huts that provide rooms, food and hot beverages are

Opting for a little more adrenaline on the way up? The Mount Kinabalu Via Ferrata installed at the crown of the mountain, and the highest in the world, is definitely not for the fainthearted! Italian for ‘Iron Road’, a Via Ferrata is a protected mountain pathway consisting of a series of rungs, rails, cables and bridges embracing the rock face. It’s a scenic section of the mountains that are typically available only to rock climbers and mountaineers and while much easier to do, the Via Ferrata on Mount Kinabalu requires some modest equipment and basic technique but with an experienced guide always on hand, all you really need is a good head for heights and you’re ready to go!

To reach the highest point of Low’s Peak, it’s a fairly reasonable trek that most of you can do provided you’re in generally good health! It’s this accessibility and relative ease of the 8.8 kilometre trek that draws thousands of people every year to do the ascent. The top of the trail runs along the southern side of Mount Kinabalu, over the Tinompok ridge and you could easily take just the weekend off to tick

this exciting experience off your bucket list! With the short two days’ trek to climb up and down Mount Kinabalu and an overnight stay at available huts in Panar Laban, grab a bunch of friends or family members and make this a trek to remember!

JUST KEEP SWIMMING

For watery adventures under the sea, Sabah’s got you covered! A host of excellent dive sites and turquoise blue water make for some serious sea tales to tell your friends back home. There is no shortage of dive shops and if you’re looking to learn how to dive for the first time, Sabah’s west coast is an ideal spot! Get certified with PADI courses for whichever level you’re ready for. Lesser known, the west coast of Sabah is a hidden gem for all underwater activities thanks to the massive biodiversity in the waters; from fluorescent fish to the thrilling variety of corals – it’s all just a short 20 to 30 minute boat trip from the bustling Kota Kinabalu city center.

DIVE RIGHT IN

Safe in the boundaries of the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park (TARP) lies the five main protected islands of Pulau Manukan, Pulau Gaya, Pulau Sapi, Pulau Mamutik and Pulau Sulug. Each island has its own charm, teeming with friendly fishy friends. If you fancy an island stay, there are a variety of accommodations for every budget available to really live the island life! These islands on

Sabah’s west coast are a great spot to get your feet wet before trying more challenging (but equally thrilling) dive sites like Sipadan and Mabul. Make sure you give the ‘Barracuda Bonanza’ site a try – the big shoals of swirling chevron barracuda are unforgettable. Love the mystery of exploring wreck sites? Be prepared for a step back into time at not one, not two but THREE World War II wreck dive sites. Usukan Bay, rice Bowl Wreck and Upside Down Wreck are all between the 25-45metre range and more suited to those with the required dive certification to reach these depths.

If diving’s not on the cards, the Borneo Reef World pontoon is an activity pontoon moored to the ocean floor off Pulau Gaya, and the largest one in Asia! Have fun jumping, sliding and slipping around in the massive inflatable water park, or pop on the crazy helmet for a unique sea-walking experience where you’ll be right in the middle of a fish frenzy. Take a walk around the underwater observatory for a drier way to check out the ocean – from little clownfish flitting about to big lobsters and fish, you can see it all. There’s even a gourmet café on board if you fancy a feed.

Here Comes the Sun

Going with the flow may not have been what Emma Agaki’s parents necessarily envisioned for her, but this former corporate girlie is a living embodiment of trust the process. Her varied resume includes time spent studying in the United Kingdom, Australia and Kuala Lumpur, with majors in Film and TV, International Relations, and a long career in communications and stakeholder management at the Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB). Like many others, the impact of COVID-19 left her looking for something more. She found a deep interest in the BodyTalk practice of refocusing your body's natural healing response to promote health and wellbeing by facilitating better communication within the body, and worked her way to becoming a certified practitioner – one of the very few in Brunei and regionally. We sat down for a good chat about hot takes on wellness, the business economy and just how hard it really is to listen to yourself.

Let’s delve into a bit of background for those who may not be familiar with you!

EA: Ok, sure! I have a background in Communications, majoring in Film & TV, and started my career in RTB coordinating news exchange with countries in ASEAN and Asia Pacific - that was a long time ago! Working in a news station got me interested in international affairs and what was going on in the world, so I decided to go back to Uni to study International Relations. I thought I’d like to work in diplomacy, but when I came back I ended up getting a job at the Brunei Economic Development Board. I had some great years at BEDB, and then in 2015 half of the organisation splintered off to form Darussalam Enterprise, which is where I was until I left the corporate world in 2021 to explore my personal interest in health and wellbeing. I can’t say that I had a clear path or purpose. I feel there’s some people who early on know what they wanna do and it’s like “Yeah I want to focus on this!” and I never felt that. I had an interest in a variety of different things, rather than a burning passion for one particular thing.

When I think back, it was more of going with the flow and just kinda figuring out and exploring interests. We have a lot of conditioning and we’re often led to believe that there is a “right” way of doing things. You can tick those boxes, but then at some point you start to question ‘is this really it?’.

You spent time being close to the action of budding SMEs and independent business owners while at BEDB/DARe, what do you think has changed since then in the ecosystem or approach?

EA: Interesting question. I would say there is a lot more drive now, there are concerted and tangible efforts to diversify the economy, especially with the rising unemployment. I also see a lot more awareness and effort in trying to help local businesses and encourage entrepreneurship, which is frankly very necessary, because ultimately a vibrant private sector is a key driver to economic growth and stability.

I do feel that there’s a bit of a gap in terms of the assistance given and what businesses actually experience, which I understand better now that I’ve been on both sides of it. On the one side, they are looking macro, what is good for the economy, how can we help businesses grow as fast as possible. And on the other side there’s the personal experience of the business owner in managing the day to day of their business. I didn’t really get it before. It’s one of those things that you can logically understand, but it’s not until you go through it that you really understand the felt experience. Starting or growing a business - particularly a micro or small business- is not just a business journey, it’s a personal growth journey as well - often times business owners are learning and

growing alongside their business. There’s an emotional component to it, your business can feel like an extension of you. So you don’t want to feel your livelihood is just a tick in someone's box.

You were one of the first adopters of the CrossFit regime. What was it that attracted you to CrossFit and the whole environment that came with it?

EA: When I got into CrossFit, that was probably around 2011, when Crossfit was first starting and GetFit was the first CrossFit gym in Brunei. I already had an interest in health and wellbeing, but at that time my focus was more on physical fitness. I liked the challenge of CrossFit, challenging yourself to do things you didn’t initially think you could do. It’s a mental game, a mindshift, and I had never thought of myself as that kind of person before, an “athlete”. Now there’s a whole big thing about mental health, but your mind and body are not separate. This is why BodyTalk appeals to me so much, because you’re dealing holistically. Our thoughts and beliefs affect our physical health, and that was also my experience with CrossFit - changing the way I saw myself and my capabilities opened up a lot of growth in terms of physical fitness. It’s like that saying, “whether you believe you can or you believe you can’t, you are right”.

Don’t Wake Me, I’m Only Dreaming

A one-woman show featuring the roles of mum, wife, designer, artist, entrepreneur, and many more, in the whimsical, wonderful world of Jellybean Dreams, Joanita Zain is finding that sometimes the best things in life are often all in good time, and best in His timing. Deviating from her original plans of saving the world with a Masters of International Politics majoring in Transitional Justice and Geopolitics and Climate Change, Joanita is now saving lives in her own little creative ways - almost a decade on, Jellybean Dreams has turned from a simple desire to decorate her firstborn’s room, into an inviting 2D extension of her colourful, wonderful approach to life that is now globally available in seven countries outside of Brunei, including London, Singapore, Malaysia, Dubai, and Australia. Her ability to be vulnerable with her real family life and struggles with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, make her not only relatable but ultimately, likeable. We sat down with the self-taught artist and graphic designer, to talk about leaving behind the corporate life to focus on her family, finding strength to rebuild after tragedy and how things really do just work out in the end.

How did Jellybean Dreams come about?

JZ: I first came up with the idea of drawing nursery prints when I had my daughter. I wanted to decorate her room but found there wasn’t much in the market for affordable, customized art, so I thought I’d try design myself. A few of my friends and family commissioned pieces from me and in 2014 I launched Jellybeandreams on Instagram. I still remember how nervous I was posting my first designs! Initially there were 12 different 'templates' for parents to customise. I thought that'd be it, but I've since done around 4000 custom art pieces and commissions from corporate and government too.

It seems like- and this is the thing I like about your journey - to have been dictated by your life and what your life has required.

JZ: Oh definitely! Nursery prints for my young children, to 'Baby's Blessed Milestones' in time for my 3rd child, to a matching game on Brunei and most

recently a Bruneian themed puzzle. As my kids have grown, so has my product range! Getting into product development meant steep learning curves for me, with designing taking weeks to months to complete. Then there's sourcing of suppliers, production, logistics, marketing and distributing - so many things go into bringing a passion project to life!

What do you think gave you the confidence to do the business?

JZ: To start it, I knew at the time what I offered hadn't been done before, so doing something niche is always good. Occasionally someone will share with me what my art has done for them, and reminds me of the 'why' I do this. I love that through art I can celebrate what is meaningful to people and recently with my products, put Bruneian made work into the international market.

Lets touch on your PCOS story... How do you find the strength to keep rebuilding after losses?

JZ: Trying to grow a family with PCOS has been a whole journey of loss, hope and joy. I now have 3 children but have experienced the loss of 3 pregnancies and they were each

very painful to go through. To rebuild, I felt comfort through trusting in His plan, and my family and close friends were there to lift me up. I think the struggles to conceive are too often done in silence and I'm glad to see that more and more, women feel they can share about their struggles and losses so we can help support each other. PCOS is unique to each woman, but typically a healthy diet and exercise always helps!

What’s coming up next Jellybean Dreams?

JZ: Earlier this year I launched the first Brunei themed puzzle and I'm so thankful for the love for it! I've been working on a new Bandar themed puzzle with lots of detail- landmarks, monuments, activities, the diversity found in Bandar. It will be a little more challenging to puzzle, think 500 pieces. Look out for it coming soon!

French Connection

Outgoing Ambassador of France to Brunei, Mr. Bernard Regnauld-Fabre, sat down with BIG on the eve of his departure to reflect on his three years in the Sultanate and matters of French trade and tourism.

biG: Please share some thoughts on your time as Ambassador of the French Republic to Brunei.

Mr. Regnauld-Fabre: Of course, it is a pleasure. My first impression of Brunei, where I had never been before was, as for many of my colleagues arriving in 2021, a medical one! As I left the airport on November 12, 2021, an ambulance was waiting for me with two nurses dressed as if they were walking on the moon! On a more serious note, I quickly came to appreciate the seriousness with which the authorities have taken the fight against the pandemic very effectively. My deepest impression of Brunei, where I lived and worked for almost three years, is that of having had the good fortune to live in a harmonious society where the signs of attention, support and solidarity between inhabitants are very important. This is exemplified, of course, by His Majesty the Sultan, who maintains a very close relationship with his people. This, and the strength of family ties, seem to be essential

biG: What are your hopes regarding increasing French tourism to Brunei and vice-versa?

Mr. Regnauld-Fabre: French tourism is still underdeveloped in Brunei. It concentrates on visitors who are already resident in Asia or who take cruises on ships that call at the Sultanate. I firmly believe that there is potential to be developed and that travel agencies should make attractive offers at trade fairs. I'm thinking of the discovery of Brunei's natural environment and eco-tourism, which has many fans among young people in search of a change of scenery. For Bruneians, Paris is a very attractive city that they often visit from the U.K. The recent Olympic Games have put the spotlight even more firmly on the 'City of Light', as we call it, which is still a popular destination for Bruneian visitors despite the lack of a direct air link.

We love Saadeddin’s versions for being packed with high-quality ingredients like loads of fresh toasted pistachios, almonds and cashews, and of course, the flaky Filo pastry, and shredded Kunafa that lends an irresistible crunch. PappaRich Brunei

For the ultimate Malaysian makan-makan, you need to go to Papparich! Savour the flavours you love of Malaysia’s multicultural landscape in the comforting setting of a Papparich restaurant. They’re big on quality, making sure each item served meets their service and kitchen standards and this is definitely reflected in their dishes! Dessert is a huge part of Malaysian culture and anyone who has truly

experienced Malaysian living will know this familiar bowl of childhood and the stalls that serve ABC Special. Papparich’s non-traditional version with fresh Longan pieces is loaded and so vibrant! Sweet and fragrant from ingredients like Rose syrup, mashed sweet potato and corn, sweetcorn kernels, milk, salted peanuts and more, these are the perfect conduit for a massive bowl of shaved ice - best eaten together for the perfect bite of ABC. For a more traditional dessert with a little twist, Papparich’s Sago Gula Melaka comes simply with chewy cooked sago pearls, fresh milk and fresh sweet corn. A separate bowl for the pure Gula Melaka sugar lets you adjust the sweetness level to just how you like it!

Walking into Yasfiani’s Bake Studio is going to be the best decision you’ll make this week. This self-taught baker makes desserts that are almost too pretty to eat - and they taste amazing! We are in love with the Ispahan and Bunga Telang especially. A stunning study on pink, the Ispahan is a tiered pavlova dessert combining the delicate flavours of lychee and rose with bolder sweet notes of ruby chocolate cream and ganache. The unique Bunga Telang marries the soft florals of the

Donut sleep on this fluffy cloud of happiness from Otto! Perfectly airy and light, Otto has been the premiere purveyor of donuts in Brunei since 2020. They first made an appearance on the menu of the owner’s previous cafe and the hype speaks for itself: donuts only and always. After taking time to perfect the ideal donut recipe, their original glazed version will make you say ‘Krispy Kreme, who?’. Their range of yeast donuts are fried fresh everyday. Otto’s donuts really come in all shapes, sizes and flavours - dare we say Wonka-esque? Whether you’re craving just a little sugar rush from the adorable bombolonis or want to try one of their many, many speciality flavours (Zesty Key Lime Pie for the win!), it’s always going to be a delicious experience. Stop in at their funky main branch in Kiulap or grab a bite from one of the kiosks around the city.

Smöoy

Mr. Baker

Eric Pui’s dream of running a bakery has given us 16 sweet years of yumminess and while we love everything on Mr. Baker’s menus, the lamingtons and macarons are the ideal treats when you want a little reward or tea time snack! Pipped from his uni days in Perth, he adapted the classic Aussie dessert to a richer sponge that reminds us of Kueh Kusui. Filled with lemon, custard, or mint cream, these bite-size squares are coated in quality dark chocolate and coconut shavings. Their special Macarons are also worth indulging in. The perfect crunchy shell and soft, chewy interior are best mates with their richly flavoured fillings that use high-quality ingredients for a superior taste. Get your delight on at their cool new cafe in Sumbiling that’s Insta-worthy!

Craving for a smooth, silky dessert that won’t make you feel bad? We love the freshness of indulging in Smöoy’s frozen yogurt or ice cream. Low fat and low in sugar, choosing from the yogurt or ice cream base is easy toppings that will make you spend most of the time wondering what to try! 36 types to be exact, and they all pair well with the deliciously mild sourness of the frozen yogurt. From crunchy bits like nuts, granola or chocolates, to fresh fruit and Asian-style jellies and popping boba, you’ll find endless joy in the multicombo fun to be had at the Spanish franchise. Of course, there are signature sauces for extra sweetness – their Pistachio sauce, the sticky

matcha sauce and smorröch is one of their best selling toppings! And with over 100 years of frozen dessertmaking experience under Smooy’s belt, you can be sure there’s a heap of quality control to guarantee every bite is wonderful. They even have a handy 500ml takeaway tub now that still comes with separate toppings so you can enjoy it any time of the day. ••

Kitchen 21

Get a taste of Taiwan at this sweet home restaurant that focuses on affordable, delicious Taiwanese meals! Kitchen 21’s co-owner, Carol, decided to start the restaurant at the suggestion of her husband, and showcase her heritage through some of the dishes she missed eating in Brunei. Alongside the quintessential savoury items, their Taiwanese dessert menu is as close as it gets to the real deal. Bowls of bouncy and chewy taro, glutinous rice and sweet potato balls match perfectly with the herbal, slightly bitter Grass Jelly chunks, cool shaved ice or Tau Fu Fa (sweet soy pudding). Of course, if you like it sweet there is the brown sugar syrup to drizzle all over! If you’re after something unique, the Roasted Bowl is a nutty, sweet and savoury delight of crushed, roasted peanut and soybean powder

generously dusted over your choice of Tau Fu Fa or Shaved Ice, and chunky Herbal Jelly. Best of all, nearly everything is homemade and kept as natural as possible! Whatever dessert you feel like having at Kitchen 21, it’s all going to be ultra refreshing, satisfying and best of all, easier on your wallet.

Fiorise

Flower power is in the house! It’s no secret that Fiorise is where you come for deliciously handcrafted bakes. Head pastry chef and co-owner, Melissa Gan, has been honing her craft and passion for baking since she was young and together with her partner Ivan Lin, they’ve created a dreamy, cosy space to eat well at. An amazing feat when you discover Melissa’s self-taught! The changing roster of items in the cafe are all hand-made and like the patisserie’s name, many are inspired by Melissa’s love for flowers - most popular are the Canelé or Petit Gateaux series, which are great reflections of Fiorise’s Korean and French fusion style . The challenging French pastry is near perfect here with the crisp of dark, roast caramel outer giving way to a pillowy custard-like interior that will put a smile on anyone’s face. Even better are the specialty flavours which add a whole new dimension to the pastry. If there’s one thing to start with here, it’s their signature Strawberry Daisy. A crisp tart shell housing a floral shaped filling of Korean strawberry gel, almond and pastry cream, with vanilla ganache, showcases such finesse that it’s almost a shame to bite into it. Sweet, slightly tart and full of fresh flavours, it’s easy to see why people drive for hours just to buy it!

Sabah

The Well Cafe

What started out as the owner's interpretation of a vision he had, The Well Cafe is a bright and cheery cafe franchise that is well known and loved for its welcoming atmosphere, delicious desserts and of course, some very good in-house roasted coffee. It’s a place that feels like you're dropping in at a friend’s house and everyone is welcoming with a warm smile and greeting. It turns out that Mr Andy, has quite a sweet tooth and came up with the majority of the dessert recipes on The Well’s menu! There’s a pleasant blend of ChineseKorean influences; the Well Bingsu series is the refreshing break you need from Borneo’s hot humidity, and whether you prefer sweet and heavier combos or fresh and fruity ones, there’s a bingsu to make you feel better! Traditional dessert lovers must try their unique Peach Gum Milk Birds Nest - a healthy, cooling treat packed with natural antioxidants and collagen that also puts a little zing back in your step.

Want a dining experience unlike any other in Sabah? OITOM’s commitment to community empowerment and showcasing heritage and premium locally sourced ingredients has translated into a bespoke menu showing Sabah as a serious contender in the global fine dining scene. Chef Raphael brought his nine years of experience to the table and boy, what an astounding result! Start off with the Borneo Vanilla Gelato, a dish you need to taste to believe. Featuring Sabah-grown vanilla beans and strawberries, delicate chiffon sponge and a delicate honey tuile, the mystery comes in the form of curry berry to the fruit

compote. Yep, you read that right. It’s the kind of ‘weird but it works’ combination that sends your palate on a wild trip and makes you question everything you know about flavours. Take a further walk to the dark side with their Chocolate Keluak Mousse with a Bambangan Siphon Donut! This complex dish has so many layers to the flavour profile that you’ll be surprised at every bite. Stewed Bambangan lends a transformative sweet and sour edge to the almost bittersweet Sabahan chocolate and keluak mousse. Time-consuming due to the many processes that each ingredient must go through to produce this dish, the ’warm’ essence of this dish is an impressive balance of contrasting flavours and textures - a little sweet, a little sour, and spiced with fragrant Keningau cinnamon for a perfect finishing touch.

TWO SONS BACKYARD

One of Brunei’s best cafes is a hidden gem by the poolside at Peak Club sports complex! Two Sons is a front runner when it comes to being the whole package. Great coffee, healthy protein lattes and gut-loving Kombucha round off the menu of artisanal bakes, plus the friendliest baristas around. With an impressive resume which includes managing an award-winning cafe in the UK for several years, and a stint at the fine dining eatery The Wilderness, Sal and Alex have turned Two Sons into a household name when it comes to the nation’s third wave coffee scene. Drawing from Alex’s heritage, they’re also working to introduce RussoEuropean bakes with an Asian twist (think Pirozkhi stuffed with a potato curry filling!). They’ve even made a name with their own brand of cold brew which has all the caffeine punch you want with bold flavours and a light mouthfeel. Perfect sipping for every day spent by the pool or mingling at one of their fun market and community events. Also known just as Two Sons Coffee, you can book them for catering or events.

A local place tucked away in the Kolombong industrial area is the coffee haven, Santola Bar Café. Not only do they serve their very own roasted grinds from Cap Kuda Coffee – the coffee conglomerate responsible for Sabah’s rise in coffee and f&b in the last decade –, they also have their own custom coffee printing service for a little magic latte art too. Established in 2001, Santola was set to be a place for the “new generation coffee drinkers”, and has around 10 types of coffee beverages for everyone to enjoy; from the ever-popular lattes and mochas down to the Malaysian favorite Kopi Tarik. The place can get busy. Head there at tea time to enjoy some scrumptious desserts like a carrot cheesecake, or perhaps a New York Cheesecake that definitely pairs well with a hot cup of mocha!

FEAST AND FURIOUS

A place for automotive lovers with nourishing good food, Feast and Furious presents a uniquely-styled interior of vehicle designs and motor accessories all packed and creatively decorated to admire as you dine. Dubbed an ‘automotive museum’, owner Alex Wong can even walk you through the interiors if you catch him there! ‘Furious’ referring to the bikes and cars is fitting and the ‘Feast’ they serve is definitely no joke; they’ve got piling dishes of bold flavors with generous portions all to cater to your satisfaction. Gotta try the Spicy Shrimpy Pasta if you’re brave enough to tackle the heat, or maybe a good thick slurp of the gorgeous Furious Laksa for an even spicier kick. Looking for something a little less intense? Classic crispy Ayam Penyet with fragrant rice with some spice or the Smoked Duck Aglio Olio are simply divine.

Some mosques will provide simple robes and shawls to meet these standards. Shoes are to be removed before entering a mosque. Please do not pass in front of people in prayer, and do not touch the Al-Quran. Please ask for permission before taking photographs – particularly inside! Mosques are usually closed on Thursday and Friday, and during prayer times – your hotel, tour guide, or Muslim locals can help you determine a good time to visit.
