Student Privileges That Take You Places
Editor’s Note
Well, here we are again folks! Another year has flown by and now we find ourselves at the start of 2025 – for many this number alone is a wild fact that reveals perhaps a little too much about age! Nevertheless, we sit at the cusp of a fresh new start, and a year ripe with possibilities and new beginnings. We hope that whatever year you’ve had in 2024, that this one is filled with renewed gusto to do better with whatever your heart wishes. In this same spirit, our January/March issue is packed with ideas to approach this theme in different areas of your life. Whether you’re looking for a room refresh, healthier eating options (which we know in Brunei to be difficult – but not impossible as our Big Appetite shows!) to feed your body and heart, ways to practice the skill of kindness, or just in need of a little bit of extra oomph in your every day, we’ve got the gamut of features to inspire and excite. We’re certainly looking forward to this year’s National Day celebrations for Brunei on February 23rd, as well as the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Chinese New Year celebrations, and hope you enjoy our special hijab styling feature with famed Saudi brand, Sharqiaa Hijab Brunei, who show us that it is possible to find new ways to do things! Again, thank you for staying with us on another journey around the sun and we’re looking forward to sharing a year of exciting content with you once more.

1, 2, 3, KOPI!
How much coffee can you drink? Well, at the 7th annual Coffee Con this year, there were not one but TWO days of everything coffee! The former single-day event has garnered so much interest that an extra was added to include a huge mix of cafe vendors, contests and impressive latte art demonstrations, community talks and cupping sessions. This year’s Coffee Con was also graced by renowned international guests like Mohamad Helmi, founder of KL-based Arkib Kopi – a wonderful addition to an already packed programme, facilitated by Shaikh Fadilah, of Dil’s Café fame. Shaikh Fadilah has previously mentioned that he’s seen the quality and exposure of the event grow over the years, a sentiment echoed by one of its co-founders, the BIG BWN Project. Judging by the packed crowds on both days, Brunei clearly loves its kopi!

MORE THAN A CUPPA
Students from local education institutions got a zap of fresh inspiration thanks to an Australia Embassy-organised visit where Jack Simpson, Australia’s two-time Barista Champion and the runner-up World Barista Champion, shared his knowledge of specialty coffee with students at IBTE Sultan Saiful Rijal campus and Laksamana College of Brunei, with the goal of training their hospitality and culinary students in coffee making, customer and hospitality services and other related skills – sectors which Australia has proud expertise in. According to Jack, spending time with the students was one of the best
I hope it was as memorable for them as it was for me!
parts of his trip, especially knowing the students took time to come in on their day off. “I had expectations of only a few students showing up, but was blown away with the amount of interest and people attending! To see the willingness of all the students wanting to learn more about coffee was incredible,” he explained adding that for him, coffee is more than a beverage, it’s about the connections and experiences you make with it. From growing coffee in the right conditions, roasting, all the way up to barista training, specialty coffee is what makes “just coffee” into something that is memorable. Baristas are the last link in that chain and need as much dedication in preparing the coffee as possible, he pointed out.
Simpson added that one of the messages he hoped to impart on students was that work as a barista or in the hospitality industry is a worthwhile option to enter into. “It’s definitely not the easiest path but with lots of hard work it’s something that is truly valuable for the community. It's a passion that’s easy to share and is contagious; hopefully I could show them that if this is what they want to pursue in their life then it is possible!”. According to local coffee guide Homage & Snippets, at the time of its publishing, there were an estimated 200 cafes (and growing!) in the sultanate alone. Simpson shared that he was very impressed by his short but immersive trip. “This is a very strong community of committed and knowledgeable coffee professionals. The specialty coffee scene here is in its infancy but it’s amazing to see so many people really pushing to grow. It was inspiring to witness while I was there.”
He added that for a local coffee convention like Coffee Con, which recently had its 7th annual event, to fill out both days of events speaks volumes to the hard work and interest in specialty coffee in Brunei which he was very glad to witness. Jack’s trip to Brunei was made possible thanks to Royal Brunei Airlines’ sponsorship, connecting Jack from Melbourne to Brunei and subsequently to Tokyo where he was scheduled to attend Asia’s biggest specialty coffee exhibition, SCAJ2024 organised by the Specialty Coffee Association of Japan.

Sing Songs, Sing-a-long!
Everybody, clap your hands! Music lovers and soulful singers were in abundance at the recent instalment of the Kuching International Busking Festival. Featuring over 40 acts from across the performing arts spectrum, including music, dance, Chinese opera, and public speaking, the event brought alive key areas of movement in the city such as Carpenter Street, the Kuching Waterfront, India Street, and Plaza Merdeka. According to a statement by the organisers, this is not just
Go,
go, go, Wushu go!
The 9th World Junior Wushu Championships touched down in Brunei recently and it was a thrilling showcase of the best young wushu athletes from all over the world. Interested in an elegant show of flying kicks and smooth back flips? Then, the National Indoor Stadium was a great place to be. You could see the Wushu athletes with their colourful and sparkly outfits popping and showing off some incredible moves that you never knew a human could ever do. Some were seen with such poise and intimidating aura, especially when holding weapons like swords and spears (fret not, they are not using real ones!). The cheers from the crowd were truly unforgettable - everyone was stomping their feet and screaming their lungs out. It was certainly the most ear-deafening and heartpumping tournament many in Brunei have ever spectated! Brunei managed to cinch three gold, three silver and two bronze medals for this championship, with Walid Lachkar triumphing in the Boy’s Daoshu ‘A’ category with an outstanding score of 9.186. The other gold medalists Meagan Marie Keasberry and Samuel Yong Jun Ong, topped the Girl's

Japan Culture Festival
With the rhythmic pounding of drum beats reverberating through the shopping centre, it’s easy to imagine being smack in the middle of an ancient Japanese ritual or performance. A quick look around reminds me that we are in fact, in the middle of Times Square shopping centre, in Berakas, and the drumming is courtesy of Marunone, a Japanese drum performing group utilizing traditional ‘wadaiko’ and setting a truly festive atmosphere at the venue. We’re here to celebrate the opening of the Japanese Culture Festival 2024, organised by the Embassy of Japan in Brunei Darussalam, where members of the public got to experience aspects of traditional and contemporary
Japanese culture and lifestyle, as well as Japanese language through stage performances and booths, over two days. The event is part of a year-long celebration of Japan and Brunei’s 40th year of diplomatic relations; Ambassador Maeda Toru cohosted the opening ceremony with Yang Mulia Haji Awang Mohd Abdoh bin Haji Awang Damit, Director of Culture and Arts at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, and Yang Mulia Dr. Noor Naasirah Abdullah-Teo, in attendance.

IN BORNEOJazzy Beats
It seems like there is some misconception that jazz is just a music genre for older generations. This is completely wrong, and the Borneo Jazz Festival 2024 returned to prove that jazz is to be enjoyed by music lovers of all ages!
Held at the lush green surroundings of the Eastwood Valley Golf and Country Club in Miri, Sarawak, the lineup was an incredible return for the anticipated event featuring international artists like Makkaya Mccraven, Rio Sidik, Ta’dan, and the inimitable Malaysian Queen of Jazz, Sheila Majid. Sarawak’s Assistant Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Dato Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, mentioned in his opening speech at the festival’s launch that music is important and helps to transcend across boundaries to connect people from different countries. With ‘Jazzy Miri’ as the theme for this year’s event, he said that he hoped that Borneo Jazz Festival would also spark more interests from tourists to come to Miri and enjoy the fun and festivities the city provides. Cue the soulful sounds of Indonesian jazz artist Rio Sidik’s trumpet, and the opening for

The various kids and adults workshops gave you an opportunity to learn something new, and even meet some of the artists themselves. A star-studded lineup ensured the nights were filled with a diverse range of styles, from slow, groovy beats to energetic and soulful performances. The smooth and melodious songs of Ta’dan and WVC Jazz Ensemble were sway-inducing while artists like Gerhana Skacinta and Sheila Majid bumped up the energy with seriously high-octane performances that made you wanna jump and sing your hearts out! The Idea of North
On the surface, the cities of Singapore and Brunei appear to be like night and day – but Bruneian creatives learned that things may not be all that different after all! “(The delegation of creative industry representatives) learnt more about Singapore’s current creative landscape at the festival, which is not too different from us,” shared Syazni Bakar, cofounder of the Bruneian creative lab and think tank Kitani Kreatif, of their experiences at the inaugural edition of the festival. Bakar, who is also a founder of 247 Studios, also shared about the National Theatre Festival Brunei (NTFB) with counterparts in Singapore such as Buds Theatre, who organizes the Asian Youth Theatre Festival (AYTF), which they’ve also been a part of since 2020.
This year’s edition of The Idea of North was focused on Brunei and Singapore’s creative scenes and held in conjunction with the 40th anniversary of the Sultanate’s independence and its diplomatic ties with Singapore. Website You'll Love Visiting
(and Revisting!)
We’re all guilty of doom scrolling – in today’s digital world, it’s almost impossible not to turn to the world wide web when you need some answers, inspiration or distraction. Thankfully, the internet is also a wonderful and endless place to find your next spark of creativity or ideas. While Instagram and Tiktok currently reign supreme for an easy fix, we’re challenging you to give these tried-and-true websites a go the next time your brain needs a little stimulus. Full of great content, visuals and just as scrollable as social media, these are our top five websites you’ll be bookmarking for all future inspo days!
1 www.mubi.com
Alright, this one’s actually a movie streaming platform but Netflix this definitely is not! Full of wonderful films both by the MUBI production house and emerging or established filmmakers, many of which are exclusively available on its platform. Originally coined ‘The Auteurs’ before its name change in 2010, the global streaming platform, production house and distributor, has been running for the last seventeen years. MUBI Fest, its annual film festival opened in worldwide locations like Chile, Colombia, Argentina, Mexico and Brazil, expanding to cities in Europe and North America a year later. Bibliophiles will appreciate that MUBI also has a publication arm –MUBI Notebook, available online and Notebook Magazine which is a limited sale print magazine published semi-annually. The films may not be everyone’s cup of tea but at the very least, thought-provoking and always great for those wanting some inspiration from outside the box.
An art and visual culture blog founded by Chicago-based editor Christopher Jobson, this is where to go if you’re looking for some sparks in art, design, and photography, visual aspects of science and general creativity. The landing page is already a swoon-worthy example of how less is more. Simple visual squares with short descriptions make this an easy scroll through for something to catch your eye. It’s almost exclusively non-digital artwork, which makes this a unique source of inspo for those who prefer things done traditionally. Jobson has said in a previous interview that although Colossal began as just a thing “to do”, he “found quickly that not only did I enjoy it but that I was also somewhat good at curating content”. It’s the ultimate version of ‘I tried it so you don’t have to” and we’re very thankful for it!
If you’re looking for some help with colour or developing a colour palette for work or a creative project, Coolors is the place to be! They’ve got thousands of free colour palettes in their library that you can choose from, with a range of simpler palettes in a 5-way color scheme to more complex ones that can give you a range in a single colours or even provide contrasting scopes of colours. Use the free generator tool if you’ve got specifics in mind or opt for the Pro subscription which gives you a bunch of extra features like palettes with colour theory behind them or get to save unlimited palettes.
If beautiful buildings or incredible interior design is what sparks your noggin, you’ll be well fed with ArchDaily’s great content. Touted as ‘The World’s Most Visited Architecture Platform’, the website is focused exclusively on the various niches within architecture; news, projects, products, events, competitons, op ed pieces – you name it, the Archdaily’s probably got it, as long as it’s directly related to Architecture. Ogle at the latest Urbanism project in China or simply browse the Image gallery for hours of ‘Ooh, that’s pretty!’, and come back often for a visual refresh.
An oldie, but a goodie for a reason! This simple to use, visual heavy collection of resources may have lost some of its luster over the years due to competing sites and new sharing platforms like TikTok, but it still remains a great source of inspiration and a fun way to collect visual samples and you can save videos or photos. The sharing pinboard function is particularly useful if you need or want to share ideas with other people! Of course, it’s best known for a huge variety of pretty interior photos, DIY hacks and plethora of recipes, but keep scrolling and you’re sure to find lots of gems worth saving.
Kindness The Effect
@Sarah Reza
It may seem strange to think about kindness as a social concept – after all, aren’t we as humans just hardwired to be nice to others and want the same? With World Kindness Day happening late last year, it struck me how odd it was that we should even need an official reminder to think actively about being kind. And there is a difference, yes, between being ‘nice’ and ‘kind’. As easy as this sounds, we also know that being kind takes effort and sometimes it can be tough, especially if you’ve got to be kinder to yourself. Doing things for others without the expectation of receiving in return is a great way to show genuine kindness to others whether it’s a person, animal or your environment. Acts of service can be wonderful ways to show care and love, and have a return effect on the giver by initiating a chemical response of dopamine. Yup, that’s right. We’re biologically hardwired as social creatures and the brain likes to reward us for helping others. In fact, the brain likes to reward us even when those acts of service don’t involve other people. Doing good deeds like community service, helping clean litter up, or helping stray animals can also give you the same feel-good factor as other happiness-boosting activities like exercising.
Acts of service you can do for yourself or others can look like:
Calling a friend you’ve not caught up with in a while, or check in with someone you think might be struggling
Let the compliments fly. Challenge yourself to only send out compliments all day to people around you (random or not!), or show some love to yourself
Give way in traffic to others, or look out for other road users
Be an active listener in your conversations with people
Feed or adopt a stray animal that needs your help
Buy secondhand or thrift items
Practice saying ‘thank you’ every time someone does something for you

This one maybe seems a little obvious but doors are an entry point for energy, so taking care of the area around or behind them could help. Doors that can’t fully open to at least a 90-degree angle are often seen as blocking the flow of ‘chi’ or energy into a space. If you like to store things to the side, make sure they’re not taking up too much space and that any door hooks for hanging items are not cluttered with unnecessary or unused items. Keeping a neat area around the front door is also meant to help welcome good energy in – plus when you come back and the first thing you see is a mess, it sets the tone for the rest of your living
A BIG FEATURE
Ever notice how your eye is drawn to certain visual cues? This is a fun and cheap way to create some extra zing to a room without breaking the bank. Adding in a block colour or some designs like vertical stripes to your wall or floor, not only changes the whole aesthetic of the room, it can even make it seem more spacious! If you’re keen to try adding vertical elements, make sure you go for complementary hues to your existing background wall so the room stays cohesive in style. Feeling a little extra creative? Adding unique decorations or homewares is a quick and easy way to spruce up a tired looking room. Think cute plates (yes, the ones you eat off of!) for a funky wall piece.
If you can only invest in smaller items, check out statement pieces like a stylish drinks caddy or unique side table like these choices from Thomson Furniture. Statement pieces like this Albia couch also work to draw the eye in so if you’re not fond of changing the whole room, all eyes will be on this comfy couch that has the staying power to last through the year thanks to the plush feather-fibre cushion with stain-
resistant performance fabric. No need to worry about accidental spills and cat scratches!

GREEN, GREEN GRASS OF HOME
You guys know this already –plants can liven up any space with their amazing endless variety of shapes, sizes and colours. So why are you still hoarding those fake sunflowers from five years ago? Investing in real living plants and flowers over fake ones is another great way to liven up the energy of a stagnant space plus real plants grow so over time so the atmosphere changes as they do too! Some plants also clean or purify the air quality which is genius hack for a better living environment. Just make sure to double check that all plants you place in the house are safe if you’ve got kids or pets!
GET RUGGY
If you can only change one thing in the house, let it be your rugs! These underdogs of interior design do so much for a space, all the while giving your feet a plushy surface to walk on. There are heaps of designs, shapes and colours nowadays so the old adage of throwing a right-angled carpet down and hoping it’ll do just doesn’t work anymore –especially when you could literally customise the rug of your dreams! If you’re invoking energy flow concepts from holistic interior approaches, round rugs generally only work for very large spaces. Investing in quality rugs made from thick piled natural fibers like wool, are also recommended to improve the flow of natural energy into a space. Plus, it’s heaps better in the long run as these items will stand the test of time and wear. No cheap tattered carpets here!
Hard Work from Heart Work
shops and tailor. And also my elder sister, who was very fashion conscious. Later on my first designs were wedding dresses for my cousins! In secondary school at St. Thomas in Kuching, I was keen on wood block prints and experimented using banana stem printing on my old shirts!
How do you walk that fine line between innovating and creating versus keeping to traditions?
He’s known as one of the leading authorities on indigenous Bornean textiles and traditional crafts, and with a resume that has led Edric Ong down a lifetime of discovery and tireless dedication to preserving and showcasing Borneo’s unique traditional heritage crafts to the rest of the world. The former architect spent almost 30 years crafting buildings before diving into the world of fashion with his own brand Edric Ong. Over the years, Ong has not only helped to showcase the beauty of Borneo’s crafts and traditional knowledge but elevated its status to couture worthy outfits and international platforms. His now iconic hat inspired by the Iban’s ‘topi tunjang’ is a key feature at all Edric Ong shows. We had a great chat about the fun in fashion, the beauty of putting a little spin on things, and what’s next for the intrepid crafty man.
Fashion is as much about letting go of borders and boundaries, as it is about respecting them - can you share more about your fashion journey in this respect?
EO: I was interested in preserving these endangered crafts, and creating traditional dyes. I also introduced silk dyes to the Iban tribe I work closely with for Edric Ong Fashion; it’s not traditional in that sense but this was the best way to pitch the traditional crafts to the international fashion real and market, and to get it noticed there. My family is Peranakan, so we have a very varied family- lots of intermarriages with other indigenous tribes like Bidayuh, Iban, etc. I follow my Dad to the interiors of Sarawak when he was Director of Inland Fisheries and I saw that the cultural materials were being lost. So I founded the atelier with this intention in mind. In 1985 I had my first major exhibition and in 1988 I started to distribute silk to different tribal groups with the challenge to see if they could work with it and only one managed to come back with successfully dyed fabrics.
How did you get started with moving from architecture to designing clothes? Did you take any lessons or courses or did you already have an existing passion for clothes and textiles prior to the shift?
EO: I have no formal training in fashion. As a teenager, I followed my mother (an immaculate Nyonya lady who innovated the Kebaya dress for herself) to the fabric
EO: I guess you’re talking about cultural appropriation in this context? I’m always trying to look into the future and you know, culture isn’t stagnant - it’s something that is always on the move. This new fabric also made them proud and it gave prestige to their leaders to wear silks. They’d also wanted to do something different and have supported me with all the things that I’ve done. I work with them very closely so there were no objections there as I’m also always promoting the weavers artists and working for them to be recognised.
Your latest ‘Tempest’ collection seems to be focused more on a very wearable silhouette - almost city chic - Was that intentional?
EO: Yes, Tempest is definitely a more ‘wearable’ collection! Last year’s was more artsy and couture. I was looking for a tropical equivalent to the Japanese ‘kakishibu’ technique, and I've got a lot of wild figs growing in my garden which I crushed and processed, dyed the fabrics and then just let it out in the sun to set. No need for a mordant! The fermented juices of this naturally abundant fruit creates that distinct khaki colour, and I’m really very proud to have discovered this as I really wanted to create all the details in this collection. It’s all inspired by climate and you can see that in the motifs as well with the clouds and other designs.

The Times They Are A-Changin
What began as a fledgling pipe dream, has turned into an illustrious decades long career for news anchor Steve Lai – a move he attributes to his wife Wei – without whom, he says he would surely be still living in Brunei, many kilos heavier! The real-life anchor man has recently joined the ranks at BBC as Chief Presenter based in Singapore where he still resides with his wife and kids, after 12 years as co-host of Channel News Asia’s morning news show and award-winning special programs. We sat down for a chat with Steve to talk new beginnings, where he gets his news and what life in a faster lane feels like.
First of all, congratulations on the move to BBC, very exciting for you! How have you adapted to the new position and what did you not expect to experience or that you’ve been surprised by?
SL: Hm, well I didn’t think I’d be doing quite as much travelling as I have been doing. The BBC obviously is a big operation but the Singapore office is small in comparison and Asia’s quite a big place (laughs). But soon after joining I found myself travelling quite a bit for coverage of the Taiwan and Indonesian elections. I knew there would be some travel involved and the chance to do different things but I was a little bit surprised at just how much opportunity to travel I’ve had with the job.
Skills-wise, is there anything that you were really excited to learn more about or to do more of in terms of perfecting that?
SL: Yeah, I was predominantly studiobased at CNA, and especially during COVID, there wasn’t much travel, but being at the BBC I’ve had the opportunity to do different types of presenting, like presenting outdoor broadcasts, playing the role of a correspondent, to doing some radio and things like that. And because I am the main presenter for Asia that means I’ve had the opportunity to do more of everything, really. It’s been quite a learning curve because everything at the BBC is so fluid; for example, when I was on a rooftop in Taiwan during the election coverage and we were doing normal
news bulletins at the same time. So I would interject with bits of the election and then come back to general news, then go back. There’s a big emphasis at the BBC to be “live and breaking” all the time. I had people talking in my ear during live interviews that I’m having, that are getting me up to speed with other news. There’s a lot to juggle but that’s the fun of being somewhere, trying new things and going to different places to do such big stories.
You’ve got to juggle a lot in the moment. How do you kind of manage that ‘stress’ and stay calm?
SL: Yes, it comes with practice and the more you do it the more you learn ‘What’s the important bit I need to get out’. I don’t think too far ahead in the program when it comes to that sort of thing. As long as I know where I am, what I’m doing and where I am going next in terms of the bulletin, then I’m ok. You have to have the trust of the people in your ear telling you what’s going on. One example; I think I was in the middle of a conversation talking about Taiwan and then someone in my ear said “Okay, we got some breaking news - the UK and the US are launching missiles into Yemen at the Houthi rebels” and it was like wait, but I’m talking about Taiwan (laughs). So you’ve got to find a way to segue smoothly into “Okay we’ve got some breaking news to get you up speed with in the Middle East”.
On that note, what do you usually read? Are you a newspaper guy or are you scrolling on the phone?
SL: I don’t remember the last time I picked
up a newspaper to read it - there’s just so much information out there online and the BBC is obviously a great resource for that. There are also other news organisations that specialize in different things too. I listen to a lot of podcasts, politics podcasts, business podcasts… I find that a good way to receive information. I spend so much time looking at a screen and reading things and it's easier sometimes, if I’m on a commute, or if I’m in the gym or something to just have a podcast on, so I pick up little nuggets here and there.
You are fully into dad life now. And there’s this mantra that you apparently say to your kids. Where did that mantra come from or what was it inspired by?
SL: Yeah, it kinda started along those lines when my oldest daughter was going to school, and we just wanted her to have something to be mindful of throughout the day. It was ‘Work hard, Play hard, Be kind, Be brave, Have fun’. So, I think if you can do all of those things or think about one of those things each day, then you're on the right track. It feels like a bit of perspective right, like you gotta work hard but you gotta find time to play hard too. Be kind to those around you, be brave because things aren’t always going to be easy, and to have fun along the way. That was our little mantra for the family.

ARTEFACTS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE TO FROM
From the Overland Telegraph Line to artificial intelligence, First Nations’ storytelling and the cutting-edge technologies of tomorrow, a new Australian museum explores our relationship with technologies and the role they play in our lives. Melbourne's first major museum to open in 25 years, the National Communication Museum opened in September last year, with exhibitions and programmes centered around cutting-edge communication technology through the ages: the hits and the misses and the downright weird. It also answers the questions about technology you are too afraid to ask.
Through its extensive collection of artefacts and the innovative use of technology, including robotics and responsive AI, NCM connects audiences with past, current and future technologies. NCM Co-Chief Executive Officer Emily Siddons describes the NCM as “a trip
down memory lane for those who remember retro tech like MSN messenger, rotary phones, the talking clock, the iconic burger phone and the first Internet cafes.” The museum spans two levels of dynamic and changing gallery spaces, with a working historical telephone exchange, immersive rooms, interactive experiences, temporary exhibitions and a dedicated Kid’s Hub. There is something for all ages to marvel at here – amongst our favourites is the Collections Gallery, a cacophony of objects sourced from the NCM collection. Here, visitors can find their own unique connections between seemingly disparate technologies through delving through objects of interest in a connected digital interface.
This display is a powerful visual statement that technological innovation is not a linear process, instead it draws on many fields of knowledge – scientific, engineering, mathematical,
historical and cultural. Speaking Clock, a mainstay of worldwide telecommunications offerings until it ended in 2019, restored and featuring the familiar voice of Gordon Gow, along with a mysterious humanoid robot visitor named Diamandini, who listens to the voice of Gordon Gow and develops her own sonic systems. There is also the Cyber Café, stepping back in time to the mid1990s and the beginning of the Information Age; Lone Phone brings you on an interactive sonic adventure inspired by the iconic imagery of glowing phone booths at night in regional Australia, and many more. Two major temporary exhibitions are also on display at NCM; an invisibility coat, robotic birds, a WW2 enigma machine, police-made malware, 4.7 million LinkedIn passwords and a yellow umbrella are among the Instruments of Surveillance exhibition. The Artificial Sky exhibition explores the humanmade constellations orbiting our planet and revolutionising communication and connectivity, on Earth and beyond. Artificial Sky has been developed in partnership with Swinburne University of Technology and Space Machines Company,
which is showcasing its prototype Optimus Satellite.
The new, not-for-profit museum is also uniquely housed in a refurbished 1930’s telephone exchange building on Burwood Road, in front of a working exchange building that is still used today. NCM aims to be an industry-led institution that serves as both a dynamic chronicle of humanity's journey in communication technology and a hub for industry to showcase its latest breakthroughs and cutting-edge projects. It is a hands-on learning experience for children of all ages with a Kids Hub and an extensive schools and education program for primary and secondary students. It also promotes research and further learning, through its partnership with Swinburne University of Technology.

Sleep on Don't SEATTLE
On the last leg of the International Visitors Leadership Program, after a whirlwind tour across the United States, I had landed in Seattle. The West Coast seaport city is of course world-famous for many things, including Starbucks, the Space Needle and the 1993 rom-com ‘Sleepless in Seattle’. I anticipated tourist-traps filled with halfdecent food, or perhaps some waning attractions struggling to remain relevant in such a vast and varied country that is reticent on the new and shiny. A question that was often asked amongst my program colleagues was ‘Which city do you think you’d come back to?’. Many of us, ironically, found the answer in Seattle right before we were due to return to our respective home countries – a sentiment similar to the 2018 report in The Seattle Times citing more people moving to the city than leaving it. But what makes this city so special?
Seattle’s metropolitan area had a population of 4.02 million in 2018 and its growth rate of 21.1% between 2010 and 2020 made it one of the country's fastestgrowing large cities.
Netizens
seem to agree on a few things – that the public transport in Seattle is by far better than many other cities in the U.S., Seattle’s natural attractions and landscape are among, if not, the best in the country, and as with most popular cities it is the city’s culture that draws so many to move here.
If nothing else, the Chihuly Garden and Glass art museum is a unique attraction that I would happily frequent again and again. Not one to typically fancy a museum dedicated to just one artist, I was so very pleasantly proven wrong upon setting foot inside. Born in 1941 in Tacoma, Washington, Dale Chihuly was introduced to glass while studying interior design at the University of Washington. In 1968, after receiving a Fulbright Fellowship, he went to work at the Venini glass factory in Venice, which would become critical in his work later. His work appears in more than 200 museum
collections worldwide and he has been the recipient of many awards, including twelve honorary doctorates and two fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts. His sculptures and installations are at once whimsical, fun, thoughtful and visually arresting, and it was certainly easy to become lost mesmerised by works like Ikebana and Float Boats, which was inspired by the Japanese art of flower arranging and spherical fishing lures during a trip there.
If you’re a foodie, well then be ready to have your wallets emptied by the time you leave the Emerald City, if you even get that far. Besides the obvious OG Starbucks branch and Reserve Roastery, Pike Place is an obvious attraction thanks to hundreds of shops winding along the famous market building. It's surprisingly also an integral part of Seattle life. Yes, it is packed with tourists (both international
and local) but there remains a solid number of locals around, which is always a promising sign. It won’t be hard to find something delicious to eat here but if you have limited time, then make this your unofficial quick list:
Fish and Chips at The Athenian or Lowell’s, is best enjoyed at the restaurant’s outdoor seating or on any available bench along the wharf area. If you’re a movie buff, The Athenian was used as a set for the 90’s romcom Sleepless in Seattle’!
Pike Place Chowder for Seattle’s famous seafood soup (Ivar’s just a few blocks down the road is equally good).
Le Panier for delicious French bread and pastries.
Wild Fish Poke in the outer galleries of Pike Place is the US equivalent of going to Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo. Fresh as fish, on a slightly more affordable scale.

Growing up with a family that focuses on fitness and healthy eating, Dilys Chai created a space called Comfort Greens where people can come to enjoy a variety of healthy dishes, from breakfast to dinner, and even outdoor dining after a workout. Their menu is made as vibrant as possible to be appetising and flavourful while remaining wholesome and nutritious. We tried their Chicken Salad Sandwich with Micro-greens; the chicken is nicely cooked, and the microgreens add a sliver of freshness, while the whole grain sourdough provides a satisfying crunch. Not to mention their Chicken Avocado
Eating healthy doesn’t have to be bland, nor boring. At least that’s the ethos at Roots. This friendly restaurant serves delicious DIY ‘Nourish’ bowls alongside a stellar menu of healthy breakfast options and desserts, that are truly joyful to eat. Only good stuff here! Feeling a little extra? Add on a premium selection or more anything for equally decent prices. Almost everything is made in house, down to the moreish sauces like a toasty Roasted Red Pepper Miso dressing or in-house Blueberry Vinaigrette, and while this takes much time to prepare it’s clear that that there’s no substitute for quality at Roots. Sweet treats are a wonderful surprise here, with a wide variety of desserts that either vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free or all of the above! If you don’t know where to start, let it be the Vegan Yam Cake or the Strawberry Matcha Cake. It’s hard to believe these are entirely vegan with their soft and most sponge cake crumb and deliciously fluffy icing. If you’re after something hearty for breakfast, they’ve also got a dedicated menu that also includes their signature Kolo Mee!

Salad; a balanced mix of protein and healthy fats, topped with a generous serving of locally sourced veggies from Rimba Garden Central. The chicken is cooked to perfection and mixed with creamy avocado, crunchy veggies, and a drizzle of homemade hummus dressing - a great option for those looking for a filling and nutritious meal. And who said you can’t consume desserts in a healthy diet? Taste their popular Moringa Loaf; a soft and tasty bread made with locally sourced Moringa, which adds a subtle earthy flavour (not as strong as matcha!). The Moringa Loaf is perfect for those looking for something that is indulgent and delicious, yet good for your body! ••

YAMYAM Korea
If you want to be satisfied and kanyang (full), YamYam Korea doesn’t disappoint. The Korean restaurant is practically an institution in the local restaurant scene thanks to their tasty food and huge portions. For something heartwarming and soulful, it’s hard to beat a bowl of Bibimbap or Samgyetang! Loaded with health benefits found in most Korean food, these are packed with lots of protein, vegetables and helpful herbs to heal. Dolsot Bibimbap is one of those dishes where not only do fresh veggies like crisp red cabbage, seaweed and cucumber, play a starring role, but they make a beautiful symphony of flavours when mixed altogether with the requisite minced meat, egg and gochujang - a spicy red pepper paste that is a key link in giving this dish its warming, slightly
spicy and umami kick.
The quintessential Korean soup, Samgye-tang, is a stuffed chicken soup that is perfect for boosting immunity and vitality. There’s Korean ginseng and red jujube dates to get your blood flowing while the whole chicken has been cooked to fall-off-the-bone tenderness. Slurpalicious and good for you?
That’s a winning combo right there. YamYam has two versions for you to try – the traditional style and a simpler version with just ginseng and glutionous rice-stuffed chicken.

Aura by TienSing
Get ready to embark on a vegetarian adventure at Aura by TienSing! This restaurant is a foodie’s paradise that highlights healthy-eating and how it helps to nurture your “aura”. The current owner, Hui, is a vegetarian and self-proclaims to be a picky eater. This influences how she designs the menu; only the best quality ingredients are used, and a lot of thought and care is put into
every dish and its processes. We enjoyed their Taiwanese Braised Rice; a dish that replaces the traditional protein of chicken with an inhouse imitation meat. The result is something smoky, chewy, and even a ‘fried’ feeling to it - you won’t believe that it's actually made from tapioca starch and coconut milk! Their Three Egg Congee can warm your belly and heart, with a rich rice porridge that fills your mouth with flavours of the perfect comfort food. Most of the dishes do not have onions and garlic, ensuring a clean feeling in your mouth and there will be no strong smell of food sticking on your clothes after eating! They’ve made the menu affordable so more people can try vegetarian food without worrying about the price. Quoted from Hui herself, running Aura feels like a “labour of love”!

T's Coffee
Fresh and funky flavours abound at this hidden gem in Sungai Hanching that offers great Vietnamese fare like noodles, banh mi and strong coffees; T’s Coffee started with the owner’s desire to fill what she saw was the lack of traditional cuisine in the country at the time. The keen womenpreneur has since refined her own recipes to make the business a standardised franchise with a second branch in The Mall, Gadong. We love the unexpectedly addictive Bun Cha Gio for its perfect balance of springy rice noodles, lots of fresh condiments like crunchy lettuce and cabbage shreds, pickled cucumber and carrots, chunky spring rolls, and a herbaceous lemongrass chicken that marries altogether with the spicy, sour and salty dipping sauce. It’s the kind of dish you have multiple servings of and still feel good about yourself. Sammie lovers will find joy with their Banh Mi selection! It’s an affordable and accessible meal that guarantees unique flavour profiles. Cap your meal off with a good strong Vietnamese coffee or a wholesome homemade yogurt drink, and rest assured you’ve done one good thing for yourself today.

The best thing is that you get to customize your meal just the way you want to – whether you want 3 proteins or just a big bowl of veggie and protein, the choice is truly yours at Peachy. These curated bowls are wholesome, delicious and best of all, filling without feeling excessive. Almost everything is made in-house and we love the protein packed Warrior Chicken bowl for its savoury goodness thanks to the key ingredients of roasted chicken, sweet potato mash and veggies; fish

Wonderboom
Kuching’s original brunch spot has been going strong thanks to a killer menu that serves up hearty and wholesome eats consistently. This light filled and airy restaurant is a wonderful place to come for any meal, and with an extensive range of Asian and Western styled dishes, there are so many choices for you to eat food that makes you happy inside and out. We love the Wonderboom Parisienne Tartine for an easy nutrient packed breakfast option. This open-faced sandwich is piled high with fresh chunks of smoked salmon and pickled radish on delicious homemade sourdough that’s been slathered with an addictive herb and garlic cream cheese spread and served with a side of fresh salad. You’ll be full, but not too full to indulge in more food! Those needing a little more oomph in their meal will enjoy The Frenchie, Wonderboom’s version of a vegetarian sandwich. This is an irresistible French Onion and Sautéed Mushroom Grilled Cheese Sourdough sandwich served with Sweet Potato Fries for a hearty, and heart-healthy meal any time of the day. The freshness of the ingredients sing in harmony with the generous slab of imported cheese, and of course, who doesn’t love sweet potato fries with their crunchy, almost caramel like flavour? If you’re in need of a sweet pick-meup that won’t put you down with guilt, go for the Dragon’s Breath Wonderbowl – packed with antioxidants from the red dragonfruit and
papaya, it just get better with the additions of fresh berries, potassium-rich bananas and chia seeds. It’s certainly a wonderful feeling to dine at this Kuching establishment!

REV & BREW KAFFEE HAUS
Are you ready for a revving good time? Rev & Brew is an automotive-inspired space where coffee is king, and anything on wheels goes. You know, the kind of place where the smell of freshly brewed coffee mixes with that hint of engine oil in the air outside. Owner and fellow gearhead, Azim, wanted to create a place of community for like-minded lovers of automobiles and the general public to come and enjoy amazing café fare and good vibes. The café has an undeniably cool atmosphere as a result, with lots of memorabilia and fun auto-themed décor. More often than not, there are a heap of gorgeous bikes parked outside to ogle. Big plus? The coffee and food are excellent. From fresh and tasty sandwiches made daily, sweets to satisfy and plenty of quality coffee options, you’ll find yourself staying long enough to make new friends and perhaps even gain a new passion!

SIGNATURE 9
There is no better feeling than hanging out with your friends in a comfy space of a coffee shop after a long week - or “mengupi” as how the cafe-hoppers say it these days. Located at Sunway Center, Signature 9 not only serves you good coffee and drinks, but also tasty food alongside it! Those who like their coffee sweet and fun should try the Signature Sip; coffee perfectly paired with sweet peach foam and orange. Dare I say, it is giving a perfect balance of caffeine and vitamins! If you love pasta, then try their new addition to the menu - Caramelised Onion Crab Pasta. Traditional Italian tagliatelle with spinach sauce and soft crab meat, finished with a delicate touch of roe. Dyanamic with flavours and texture each bite is a savoury moment to remember. So whether you’re a coffee connoisseur, a foodie, or simply someone who appreciates the art of a well-crafted meal, then Signature 9 is the place for you.

ZINC RESTAURANT & BAR
A delish dining experience awaits in this fusion restaurant known for their Asian and European influenced menu that ranges from tapas to vegan and vegetarian options. Even the captivating drink menu will quench your thirst with their refreshing combinations and some very good mixologists behind the beverages. The live music element here is always a plus. Try the captivating Peruvian-style Salmon Ceviche for a bright bite, or perhaps you’d like something more classically European? They’ve got lots of options to take your tummy around the world - buttery Escargot (snails, guys!), a crispy Pork Belly or for a little bit of extra indulgence, the mouthwatering grilled Chorizo sausage with sauteed potatoes or a plate of fatty Jamon Iberico slices – it all makes for a backslapping meal. No meat? No problem. Their Pan Con Tomate is a tangy beaut to be crunched and munched, and if not, a simple bowl of warming mushroom soup is at the ready too. The Spanish Josper Oven is a huge feature here, and most of the dishes center around this special charcoal oven.
