transitionary laboratory architecture for architecture students

Type: Experimental Architecture School Year: 2016 (Final Year Project) Location: Adelaide CBD Tutor: Margit Brunner Softwares: Rhino3D, AutoCad, Maxwell Render, Illustrator, Photoshop and Indesign. Description: The project is an experimental architecture school where students participate in a compeition and the winning design gets built as part of the school cirriculum. The scaffolding structure that floats above the regular functional school is a 1:1 scale laboratory space where temporary structures are built. Through the construction of temporary structures, spatial creativity is challenged and developed. These temporary structures designed as furniture have no fixed programme/function and can be inhabited by the students and their tutors in whichever way they deemed fit. Hence the constant changing structures allows it to be a transitionary laboratory.

CREATING FORM For a period of one month, the state of the bed will be photographed upon waking up. The photographs are then translated into physical models for further processing.

1.

In order to explore the theme of transitional fabrics, the models created were used in this exploration. The word transition meant that the pieces change yet somehow remain connected together. Here an analogue method of cut and ‘stich’ is used.

2.

3.

Each photograph is divided up into 2cm strips and then numbered. Strips of the same number are rearranged in areas where they appear to flow.

4.

A new photograph image is formed.

CREATING FORM

The models reproduced from the photos were used for this experimentation. Here both the front and back elevations of the models were cut into the strips, numbered and rearranged. These strips were then arranged both in the forward direction and then in the reverse direction as well, for example, Front Elevation-Forward direction. Both directions allowed new lines to be formed creatively.

Lines from all those in the same category (i.e Front Elevation- Forward/ Reverse) are then lofted together to form the new fabric.

FENESTRATION

1. A Piece of fabric

2. Fabric is cut into strips

3. Strips are flown along a surface

4. Strips are tilted to become less homogeneous and appear experimental.

PLAN CUT Plan showing the different heights and levels the surfaces are as well as the circulation within the structure. Also shows the radius at which the cranes can rotate.

SECTIONS C1

Sections showing the experimental space sitting above a regular architecture school (existing building) and in their varies stages of constuction. There is no fixed programme within the experimental space, various activites can take occur. As the surfaces within the experimental spaces are curvy and not flat, perforated metal platforms have been introduced to allow some functional spaces to be created.

the colony on franklin

Type: Mix-used Development in the Adelaide CBD Year: 2016 Location: Adelaide CBD Tutor: Francesco Bonato Softwares: Rhino3D, AutoCad, Illustrator, Photoshop Description: The Colony is a mixed-used development in the Adelaide CBD. The structure and cohesiveness within Australian ant-hills is the main inspiration for the project. Through the play of light, the project brings out reminiscent of the former Uniting Communities Church. The project has been divided into three zones, Firstly the public zone which comprises of the entrance foyer and retail spaces, the semi-private zone which houses the commercial offices and lastly the residential zone that has been split into two blocks, connected by linked bridges, The organic shapes help redefine the rigid landscape of the surrounding context while tackling issues such as solar penetration, natural ventilation and greenery. The the curtain wall glass facade of the podium allows the upper levels to appear as though floating.

Issues to address: - Response to Sunlight/ Solar Penetration - Response to Ventilation - Response to Greenery - Response to the Norm of a mixed- use development Problems: - Lack of greenery and vegetation around site. - Topography of Adelaide is relatively flat - Buildings are rectangular and rigid SITE: - Located along Franklin St and Pitt St in the Adelaide CBD - Site footprint measure: 98m x 32m - Total Area: 2941sqm

THEME: LET THERE BE LIGHT - Genesis - Reminisce of the former church site - Reflection on one’s state

Solutions: - Introduce greenery to building - Introduce a building that transforms the visuallandscape of the CBD both physically and metaphorically

AUSTRALIAN ANT- HILLS/MOUNTS - Various programme, zones and structure within the hill - cohesive and harmonious living - Porousity

FUNCTIONS Each of the two blocks have their own vertical movement core which comprises of 4 service lifts and 2 stairwells which also is the emergency fire stairs. The stairs are 7.5m away from the lift core and provides quick access to the occupants living on either ends of the block. The cores made from reinforced concrete helps reinforced the structure. Link Bridges connect the two blocks on the 10th and 15th floor.

The building has been divided into 3 zones: The public zone which contains the entrance lobby, retail and the public plaza. These areas provides access to the other two zones. The second zone is the semi-public which has the commerical offices and auditorium and the third zone is the private residential zone. Not shown is the basement carparking. The top floor consist of the plant room with the ME- facilities and on-site power generation.

The building is constructed out of concrete. Concrete slabs run perpendicular to the columns. The 300x 300 pilotis columns help transfer the vertical load down. Furthrmore this structural solution allows the residential area to appear as though floating above the curtain wall system podium.

oasis for the visually-impaired

Type: Urban Playground for the Visually-Impaired Year: 2015 Location: The Depot, Adelaide CBD Tutor: Dr Jo Russell-Clarke Softwares: Sketchup, AutoCad, Illustrator and Photoshop Description: The Oasis- an urban jungle playground is a space where the visually-impared can feel safe and not alienated from society. The non-visually impaired are also welcomed to use the space. The proposal aims to encourage the interaction between both groups through the design of the park. The proposal is called the urban jungle playground as it will also include sensory gardens, trampolines and structures (all fall proof) to hopefully provide the visually impaired an experience they would not normally have. The space also aims to help these visually-impaired people to improve their confidence/self-esteem, orientation skills, independency while considering a multi-sensory approach to cater their auditory, haptic and olfactory needs.

dharamshala sarnath

Type: Hotel in Varanasi, India Year: 2015 Location: Sarnath, Varanasi, India Tutor: Mirai Morita Theme: Culture, Geometry, Light & Shadow Softwares: Sketchup, AutoCad, Maxwell Render, Illustrator, Photoshop and Indesign. Description: The Dharamshala, Sarnath is a boutique hotel located next to an Archeological site in the city state of Sarnath. The hotel’s main concept drew inspiration from Rock-cut Ajanta Caves where geometrical shapes where found throughout. In the Ajanta caves, there were the contrast of hard and soft, light and dark, nature and built forms. All these were taken into the design approach. Though most of the caves were geometrical or symmetrical, in the design of the hotel, there was the usage of these shapes to create a form that doesn’t look symmetrical. From the first impression, the plan is made to be perceived as a three-dimensional drawing. But it is actualy two-dimensional.

DESIGN PROCESS

Basic square geometry found in the caves are placed on site.

Ajanta Caves which are surrounded by nature.

Square geometry is converted to hexagonal shapes, a shape widely used in buddism.

Symmetrical geometry found in the caves.

These Planes are then overlapped to form geometrical patterns that is laid all over the site.

contextualgami house Type: A Complex of 6 Residential Units Year: 2013 Location: Adelaide CBD Tutor: Mirai Morita Theme: Rethinking the Verandah Softwares: Rhino3D, AutoCad, Vray

Description: This project is about creating a residential complex of 6 houses in the Adelaide CBD. The main concept was rethinking the common verandah found in Victorian style house around the city. It started of with the idea of the japanese paper craft technique of Origami and through a series folds and bends, a residential complex is created. Each individual housing pod is connected by a series of verandahs. I wanted each pod to be sort of a studio pod for one to two people. Most of the walls are slanted due to the folding and triangulation.

an ornithologist’s retreat Type: A Studio Retreat for an Ornitologist Year: 2012 Location: Kangaroo Island, South Australia Tutor: Gavin Chow/Lucy Crawford Theme: A Studio Retreat for a Hobbyist Softwares: Rhino3D, AutoCad, Vray

Description: This shack retreat is a tall structure allowing uninterrupted views of the surrounding landscape. This also provides a view above the tree canopy, which is ideal for bird watching. This bright and airy retreat is constructed mainly out of timber and aims to co-exsist with the surrounding landscape. Made to mimic a living ‘human-birdcage’/living aviary, the retreat is semi-open where birds can fly in and out freely. The ground floor houses the bathroom and pantry while the main living area is on the third and mezzanine level. The veranda acts as a human perch while the bay window acts as a reading box. Here, the interaction between human-bird, interiorexterior is strong. Any boundaries present are blurred. This shack is an ideal place for an Ornithologist to retreat in away from the bustling city life.
