FRIERSON FIELD Frierson Field has been the home of the Choctaws for over three decades thanks to the generosity of Pete Frierson and Frierson Building Supply. The facility features a grandstand area directly behind home plate that seats up to 1,200 people, and an enclosed pressbox atop the grandstand. The pressbox has heating and cooling and features two levels of seating that can accommodate up to twelve people and two broadcast crews. In 2005, a covered practice facility was constructed on the third base side of the stadium. The facility has enough space for two full-length batting cages, as well as bullpen. The scoreboard was added in 2002 giving the Choctaws one of the larger boards in the American Southwest Conference.

Charles and Aline Williams Strength Center Mississippi College boasts one of the premier strength facilities in the country among Division III universities. The Charles and Aline Williams Strength Center has more than 5,000 square feet of working area and provides Choctaw athletes with top of the line equipment necessary to the success of an athletics program. The facility was originally furnished with state of the art strength equipment made possible by the donation of Mrs. Aline Williams in memory of her husband Charles H. Williams. In 2011, the strength center underwent a renovation as new equipment was brought in throughout the building. The strength center contains the latest and best equipment such as Hammer strength equipment, three power clean platforms, rubberized dumbbells for Olympic lifts, three squat racks, cardiovascular equipment, and numerous other machines for use by all Mississippi college student athletes. The strength center is located adjacent to Robinson-Hale stadium and provides a deck overlooking the football field for recruiting visits. The field can also be seen from inside the weight room with wall to wall windows on three sides of the facility.

Mike

lege Coach of the Year in 1986 an 1988. On October 16, 1996, the Copiah-Lincoln community game Jones the ultimate honor; they inducted him into their 1996 Sports Hall of Fame Class.

JONES

Athletic Director jones01@mc.edu Mike Jones is stepping into his 13th season as the full-time athletic director after an incredibly successful basketball career at MC. Jones returned to his position as the full-time athletic director in 2008 after stepping down as head coach of the men’s basketball program following the 2007-08 season. During his 20-year coaching career, including sixteen seasons at MC, the Hall of Fame coach put together a career record of 436-130 (.770). As athletic director, Jones has helped build one of the top athletic departments in the American Southwest Conference. In 12 years overseeing the athletics department, he has given all of MC’s programs an opportunity for success with improved facilities through fund-raising. In the 2009-10 season, every MC athletics team qualified for postseason play, and all but two teams had winning records. Under his leadership, the athletics department was able to raise over one million dollars for the addition of an artificial playing surface to the football field and new surrounding track facility. Under his watch, a new soccer complex was constructed in 2005 and a new fieldhouse was constructed in 2011. Major renovations were also made to A.E. Wood Coliseum in 2008. Coach Jones helped raise over $160,000 at the MC Athletics Dinner in 2012, where former Atlanta Braves pitcher John Smoltz was the keynote speaker. The Athletics Dinner has hosted speakers such as Gene Stallings, Oakland A’s outfielder Seth Smith, Robert Khayat, Sylvester Croom, Mike Bianco, and Jeff Brantley. After a four-year hiatus, Coach Jones returned to the bench for two seasons from 2006-08 where his Choctaws compiled a 46-9 record overall and a 35-5 conference mark. In the ‘06-’07 season, Jones led MC to a third consecutive ASC Championship and a trip to the “Sweet Sixteen” of the NCAA Division III Tournament. In his first round as head coach of the Choctaws, Jones led MC to 14 consecutive winning seasons overall, including five straight NCAA Tournament appearances at his alma mater. Jones led MC to four ASC championships in 1998, 1999, 2002, and 2007. In the 2007 season, the Choctaws reached as high as a #3 national ranking. Coach Jones earned three ASC Coach of the Year honors in 1998, 1999, and 2007, and his players consistently appeared on the All-Conference and All-Academic teams at the end of the season. Emphasizing defense, the Choctaws led the ASC in scoring and field goal percentage defense in 2007. Mike made the move to Mississippi College following a four-year stint at Copiah-Lincoln Community College where he dominated the state and earned national prestige. During his tenure, Jones’ teams were consistently ranked in the National Junior College Athletic Association’s Top-Twenty Poll. He took teams to the National Junior College Tournament where the 1988 team finished seventh. His teams were State Junior College Champions in 1998 and were two-time Region 23 Champions.

Jones’ coaching success took no one by surprise after his stellar background as an assistant. Before going to Co-Lin, Jones spent eight seasons as an assistant at the University of Southern Mississippi. After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Education at Mississippi College in 1975, Jones served as a graduate assistant at MC and was responsible for all scouting and recruiting. He later received a Master of Education in School Administration in 1977. Mike is the son of Juanita Bridges of New Hebron, MS, and is married to Jane Jones of New Hebron. They have two children, a son Michael and a daughter Mandy. Michael is married to their daughter-in-law Amy. Mandy is married to their son-in-law Taylor Sisson. Coach Jones has four grandchildren, Zach, Ansley Kate, Will and Charlotte.

MC Athletics Mission Statement The philosophy of intercollegiate athletics at Mississippi College is inherent to, and compatible with, the vision statement of Mississippi College. The vision statement reads: “Mississippi College seeks to be a university recognized for academic excellence and commitment to the cause of Christ.” Intercollegiate athletics is one way the university provides activities and an environment which stimulate the intellectual, spiritual, social, emotional and physical development of its students. It is in keeping with the vision of Mississippi College that the Board of Trustees voted in March 1995 for the university to become a member of Division III of the National Collegiate Athletic Association in the fall of 1997. Mississippi College is committed to the NCAA Division III Philosophy Statement: “Colleges and universities in Division III place highest priority on the overall quality of the educational experience and on the successful completion of all students’ academic programs. They seek to establish and maintain an environment in which a student-athlete’s activities are conducted as an integral part of the student-athlete’s educational experience. They also seek to establish and maintain an environment that values cultural diversity and gender equity among their student-athletes and athletics staff.” Intercollegiate athletics at Mississippi College are committed to adhering to the letter and spirit of rules and regulations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the American Southwest Conference (ASC).

For his accomplishments, Jones was named Region 23 Junior Col2014 CHOCTAW BASEBALL

Susan

MUSSELWHITE Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance Senior Woman's Administrator musselwh@mc.edu Susan Musselwhite enters her eighth year as the Assistant Athletic Director and 14th as Senior Woman Administrator / Compliance Officer

ADMINISTRATIVE As the Assistant Athletic Director, Susan Musselwhite is involved in many facets of the day to day operations of the athletics department for both the men and women. Musselwhite also directly oversees the planning and organization of special athletic department events including but not limited to fundraising, home game administration and facility use from outside entities. As the Senior Woman Administrator, Musselwhite’s main responsibility revolves around the well being of our athletes and the growth and development of our programs. In this role, Musselwhite was responsible for initiating the first Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). “Every campus is required to have a SAAC group per NCAA rules. This group was established to give student-athletes a voice on campus, as well as to the American Southwest Conference and the NCAA.” The SAAC is also a way for our athletes to be involved and promote many community service projects.

Since joining the American Southwest Conference in 1998, Coach Musselwhite led the Lady Choctaws to a 205-152 overall record. In 1999, the Lady Choctaws finished 22-9, which at that time, ranked as one of the best records in school history. In 2002, the Lady Choctaws produced a 26-14 record and finished second overall after losing to East Texas Baptist in the ASC Championship game. In 2005 Musselwhite received Co-Coach of the Year honors that she shared with Louisiana College coach Tim Whitman. The 2006 season concluded with the Lady Choctaws finishing with a 24-16 overall record and a third place finish after losing in the semi-final game of the ASC Championship tournament. Several Lady Choctaws received post season honors and Musselwhite was named the East Division “Coach of the Year.” Musselwhite attributes the programs success to the growth of the sport of fastpitch softball. “When I started coaching at Mississippi College, fastpitch softball was new to most of the high schools in Mississippi and non existant at the junior college level. The emergence of fastpitch softball as an Olympic sport drew immediate recognition to the sport. The NCAA quickly followed by adding the sport as a championship sport and it has not stopped growing since.

PERSONAL A native of Southaven, Mississippi, Musselwhite received her Bachelor of Education degree from Mississippi College in December of 1994 and completed her Masters of Education in August of 1996. Musselwhite was inducted into the Mississippi College Sports Hall of Fame in April 2006. Musselwhite also serves an instructor in the Department of Kinesiology and has been a Clinton Parks and Recreation Advisory Board member since 2005.

Serving as the Compliance Officer, Musselwhite is responsible for certifying the eligibility for the more than 400 student-athletes on campus as well as serving as a campus liaison between Mississippi College, the American Southwest Conference and the NCAA regarding ever changing rules and regulations. “I am very fortunate to be able to continue my career at Mississippi College in this role. I am especially grateful for the opportunity to work with Mike Jones, our coaches and our staff and to be a part of such a successful program.”

COACHING Before being named Assistant Athletic Director in the Fall of 2006, Musselwhite served as the Head Softball Coach at Mississippi College. After completing a four year career and serving one as a graduate assistant, Musselwhite took over the softball program in its Division III inception and guided the program to 7 consecutive 20+ win seasons and 9 winning seasons in a row. As the Head Softball coach, Musselwhite tried to be an ambassador for the sport of softball by being a community resource. Musselwhite conducted many player clinics as well as coach’s clinics trying to improve the knowledge level and skill level of players and coaches around the state of Mississippi.

Season Outlook SEASON PREVIEW

The Mississippi College baseball team will enter their final year in Division III looking to improve upon a tough 2013 season. The Choctaws dropped seven of their final 10 games and did not qualify for the American Southwest Conference Tournament for the first time since 2000. The Choctaws bring back six position players that saw significant starting time last year, including All-ASC performer Kyle Blount. The Independence, Miss. native led the team with a .333 batting average and just six strikeouts in 135 at-bats. Starting pitcher Brooks Fortenberry also returns after an all-conference campaign as a sophomore in which he went 4-2 with a 2.85 ERA and 49 strikeouts. “We are pleased with the group of guys we have coming in this year to go with our returners,” said head coach Brian Owens. “We’re ready to take a step forward this season in our final year in Division III.”

PITCHING The Choctaws will have to replace two weekend starters from a year ago with Ryan Glover and Mack Murray no longer with the program. BROOKS FORTENBERRY comes back and will look to continue the progress made since his freshman year. The Magee native finished second on the team with 60.0 innings pitched and walked just 15 over that span. MC does have three pitchers returning with starting experience in seniors BLAKE MCILWAIN, BLAKE ROBERTS and ZAC TUCKER. Mcilwain assumed the mid-week role last year and had his best game against Rhodes when he struck out seven and allowed just one earned run over 6.0 innings.

Also looking to see playing time at the position this year are J.D. TACKETT and COLTON MEARS. Tackett is a transfer from Northwest Mississippi Community College, while Mears is a freshman from DeSoto Central High School. Freshman DILLON PETTIGREW was a mid-year transfer from Brandon, Miss. that will push for playing time.

INFIELD The Choctaws return the left side of their infield from last season as ROBBIE JERNIGAN and TATE RATCLIFF come back for their senior year. Jernigan is a slick-fielding shortstop that posted a .938 fielding percentage, only making 11 errors on the year. Ratcliff is a versatile infielder that could see action at second, third or short. He hit .250 last season with 17 runs scored. The Choctaws will have to replace the production of second baseman Josh Perez, who will be a graduate assistant with MC this season. He hit .327 with a team-high 49 hits, 27 runs scored and 16 stolen bases. MC has plenty of newcomers on the infield that will look to fill the other two spots and possibly push the starters for playing time. CALEB MORRIS is a transfer from Wallace Community College-Dothan, and he appears to be one of the front-runners to play third base. TREY PIRKLE from Missouri both look to see time at second base. Senior CHRIS CASTO will look to see some time at first base with the departure of Brett Hightower, who started for three seasons at the position. Casto can also play in the outfield and will see get some innings on the mound this year. Also looking for time at first base will be MARTY STRINGFELLOW from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.

Roberts started five games last season and posted a 4.94 ERA in 27.1 innings pitched. Early in the season, he was effective and became an important reliever later in the year. He has gotten into shape and will look to fill a huge role on this staff. Tucker has been an integral part of the team since his freshman year and looks to continue in his final season. He has made 20 appearances in his career, starting six games.

The Choctaws return two outfielders with starting experience from a season ago in Kyle Blount and Spencer Wilson. Blount was an All-ASC performer a year ago and finished second on the team with 23 runs scored and 45 hits. He also tallied six stolen bases on the season and rarely struck out. Wilson made the most of his 10 starts on the year, collecting nine hits with a home run and five RBI. MC will have to replace the production of right fielder Pate Shackelford, who held down the position for the past two seasons. He started his career on the basketball court, but finished on the diamond. Shackelford his .264 with 15 stolen bases as a senior.

SCHEDULE The Choctaws will play 33 conference games out of 40 total in their final season in the American Southwest Conference. With 12 teams remaining in the league, MC will play each team in a three-game series. The other seven games are comprised of three against Belhaven and three against Millsaps with the annual game against Illinois Wesleyan at the beginning of Spring Break.

The Choctaws have three newcomers they expect to see action right away. JON MARK HERRINGTON comes from Jones County Junior College, while JAYME MONROE and GRADY TURMAN are from Hinds Community College. Monroe could see a weekend starter position, while Herrington and Turman will be weekend relief and mid-week starter options.

Two newcomers looking for playing time in their first season will be Layton Grant from Wallace Community College-Dothan and freshman Hunter Bolin from Starkville Academy.

Two returners that will look to make an impact in the bullpen for the second straight year will be senior BUCKY SHIPP and junior ANDY OLMSTED. Shipp allowed just one earned run in five appearances last year, while Olmsted recorded a 2.35 ERA and a save.

Senior ZACH EVANS returns for his senior season after starting 29 games behind the plate last year. He struggled at the plate with just a .167 batting average, but his ability to call a game and keep the opponents’ running game in check make him a valuable asset on the field.

MC opens the season on Tuesday, February 18th when they play Belhaven at Smith-Wills Stadium in Jackson. They open ASC play on Friday, February 21st when they host Hardin-Simmons for a three-game series. OWENS Head Baseball Coach owens@mc.edu 601.925.3353 Mississippi College Head Coach Brian Owens enters his ninth year in the program and eighth season as the head coach of the Choctaws. Over his six seasons, he has compiled a record of 172-135 overall, and a 75-50 record in the American Southwest Conference. Over his six-year career, the Choctaws are 86-45 in games at Frierson Field. The 2013 season got off to a slow start, but the Choctaws would get things going as they grabbed a three-game sweep of Huntingdon in Clinton at the end of March. Each of the games were decided by one run, but the most exciting game came on Friday night when MC scored six runs in the ninth inning, eventually winning in extra innings, 7-6. Four Choctaws earned All-ASC recognition as Brett Hightower and Josh Perez were Second Team selections and Kyle Blount and Brooks Fortenberry were Honorable Mention. In 2012, the Choctaws advanced to the ASC Championship Tournament after pulling out a series win at Texas Lutheran in the ASC Championship Series. The Choctaws went 21-24 but won four of their last five games to clinch the #3 seed in the ASC Tournament. MC was 4th in the league with a .309 batting average and finished 3rd in the league with 292 runs scored. J'Marcus Brooks and Mike Kerdock were First Team All-ASC selections, while Ryan Glover and Brett Hightower earned Second Team nods. Hightower and Kerdock were also named to the ABCA All-West Region Team. The 2011 season saw the Choctaws advance to the ASC Tournament for the 11th consecutive time and 12th time in 13 tries, which is the most of any team in the league. MC led the nation in home runs (50) and home runs per game (1.19). The Choctaws also led the American Southwest Conference in batting average (.330), slugging percentage (.504), runs scored (373), and runs batted in (329). The pitching staff also led the league with 321 strikeouts. MC went on a streak of winning 11 of 12 games to help clinch a berth in the conference tournament. Four different Choctaws were named to the All-ASC teams (Brandon Benton, Spencer Brunson, Clay Crosswhite, and Stuart Magee). In 2010, Owens led the Choctaws to the most wins (39) and least losses (11) in school history as MC advanced to the West Region championship game for the first time. The Choctaws led the league in ERA with a mark of 4.06 in 423.0 innings pitched. MC opened the season 17-1, including a 15-game winning streak. In 2010, MC set school records for at-bats (1786), runs scored (456), hits (620), batting average (.347), doubles (114), triples (22), total bases (910), and runs batted in (397). MC also set pitching records in 2010, including strikeouts (351), wins (39), losses (11), and innings pitched (423.0). Overall, 12 Choctaws earned All-ASC selections with Bo Bell being named Hitter of the Year and Tyler Seaman being named Pitcher of the Year. In 2009, Owens led the Choctaws to an ASC East Co-Championship with a 30-16 overall mark and a 14-4 conference record. The Choctaws eliminated Mary Hardin-Baylor in the ASC Championship Series and advanced to the championship game of the ASC Tournament. MC finished third in the ASC with a .337 batting average and led the league with 111 stolen bases. Under Owens' tutelage, the Choctaws had two All-Americans in Brett Hinson and Bo Bell. Hinson and Bell also earned ABCA-Rawlings First Team All-West Region honors with Hinson being named the region's Pitcher of the Year. Tim Bruss, Tyler Seaman, and Bell earned All-ASC First Team honors. Seaman was named ASC Newcomer of the Year after throwing two no-hitters on the year. Overall, eight Choctaws earned All-Conference honors.

14

In 2008, Owens led the Choctaws to the ASC Championship Tournament and a 24-19 overall record, inclduing an outstanding 14-5 mark in the conference. The Choctaws reached the tournament after beating Mary Hardin-Baylor in two games in the ASC Champioship series. Owens is the primary pitching coach and watched the team ERA improve from 6.41 in 2007 to 5.40 in 2008. For his efforts, Owens was named ASC East Division Coach of the Year and had five players earn All-ASC honors. In 2006, Owens served as the pitching coach and top assistant coach for the Choctaws and put together one of the top pitching staffs in the ASC. Under his tutelage junior pitcher Jonathan Russell earned ASC East Division Pitcher of the Year honors. Russell led the conference in wins (10) and innings pitched (88.2). He finised the season 10-3 with a 3.05 earned run average and 79 strikeouts, good enough for second in the league. The entire staff ranked 4th in the ASC with an earned run average of 4.87 and led the conference with 324 strikeouts. They were second in the league with an opposing batting average of .271. Before joining the staff at MC, Owens spent two years at Tennessee Tech where he filled the position of pitching coach. At Tennessee Tech, Owens was responsible for the pitching staff as well as field maintenance. He also was involved with fund-raising efforts and recruiting. Owens spent his first season of coaching as a student assistant on Ron Polk's staff at Mississippi State University. There he assisted with the pitching staff and performed gameday duties with the staff. He oversaw the bullpen during the games. He also worked summer camps with the Bulldogs as an instructor. Prior to his coaching career, Owens spent his collegiate playing career at Mississippi State and also Hinds Community College. He and his wife Anna of seven years have a five-year old daughter Ella, and a two-year old son, Parker Michael.

2014 ASC Preseason Release RICHARDSON, Texas – Defending American Southwest Conference champion The University of Texas at Tyler has been picked to win the 2014 ASC baseball regular season title after a vote of the league’s head coaches, sports information directors and media members, announced Wednesday (Jan. 22). Texas-Tyler received 33 of a possible 35 first-place votes and collected 418 points in the preseason poll. In his first season as coach, Chris Bertrand led the Patriots to the 2013 ASC championship, the NCAA Division III regional semifinals and posted the second-most wins in program history (37-12). Texas-Tyler returns 24 players from last year’s team and enters 2014 ranked in the top 15 in two national polls. Three-time ASC champion Concordia Texas was picked second with 352 points. Louisiana College came in third with 309 points and received two first-place votes. Texas-Dallas was picked fourth (304), Hardin-Simmons fifth (260) and Mary Hardin-Baylor (258) was tabbed sixth to round out the top half of the poll. East Texas Baptist (7th, 209), Mississippi College (8th, 163), LeTourneau (9th, 161), Howard Payne (10th, 125), Sul Ross State (11th, 90) and Ozarks (12th, 79) complete the polling. In addition to the preseason poll a total of 23 players – 12 position and 11 pitchers – were named to the ASC Baseball preseason watch list by the head coaches. Among the players are 13 returning all-conference selections, including the 2013 ASC East Division Player of the Year senior utility player Kevan House (Whitehouse, Texas/Whitehouse HS). A West All-Region first-team selection by D3baseball.com, House led the league in hits (65), doubles (16), total bases (117) and slugging percentage (.684). Other notable returning players include East Texas Baptist senior first baseman Philip Windham (Keithville, La./Calvary Baptist Academy HS), Ozarks senior outfielder Freddy Prince (Jonesboro, Ark./ Westside HS), Howard Payne junior outfielder Jake Sadler (Liberty Hill, Texas/Liberty Hill HS), and Texas-Dallas junior pitcher Calvin Campbell (Plano, Texas/Plano HS). Windham, a preseason first-team All-American by D3baseball.com, tied for third in NCAA Division III in home runs (12). Prince was first-team all-conference in 2013 after leading the ASC with a .406 batting average and Sadler was named second-team after putting up a league-best .477 on-base percentage. Campbell recorded the top ERA in the conference (1.15) in 2013 to earn second-team honors. The 2014 baseball season is the 18th in ASC history and marks the return to a single division format since the 1997 and 1998 seasons. American Southwest Conference The American Southwest Conference, one of the largest intercollegiate athletic conferences in NCAA Division III, enters its 18th season with the 2013-14 academic year. Founded in May 1996 to provide a structure for intercollegiate athletics among the member institutions, the American Southwest Conference includes former members of the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association (TIAA) and other institutions outside the Texas border. From the eight founding institutions to today’s present group of 14 college and universities, the ASC encompasses institutions sharing similar educational and athletic philosophies. Spreading across four states -- Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi -- the ASC offers student-athletes competition in 16 sports with opportunity for advancement in both conference and NCAA Division III championships. The American Southwest Conference has a multidimensional mission to create an environment characterized by opportunities to learn, friendly competition and activities for the conference membership. ASC members believe team and individual sports provide learning opportunities, and its membership strives to create an athletics environment supportive of teaching and learning. Conference and NCAA resources also provide student-athletes, coaches and administrators access to academic, leadership, sportsmanship and career enhancement opportunities. Traditional standards of ethical conduct and fair play are respected among the ASC members. CHOCTAW TRAITS

Bravery, Fairness, Speed Mississippi College athletic teams have been known as the “Choctaws for many years, but not many people know from whence it came. The late Rev. Montie A. Davis of Pascagoula, Miss. was the man that brought it into being and was proud of it, too. In fact, Davis believed providing the school the nickname for the athletic teams brought him more recognition than almost a half-century of service as a Baptist minister or the fact that he was wounded three times in combat during World War I. Davis entered Mississippi College shortly after World War I, and although he had played football while in high school, he was not able to do so in college. Wounds from combat prevented it. He did not lose interest in athletics, however. The 1921 football team, which in-

cluded legendary Edwin (Goat) Hale, now a member of the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame and one of the greatest backs ever to play at the college, marched through a 7-2-1 record against stiff opposition. Hale led MC to wins over Tulane University (14-0), Louisiana College (680), Union University (35-0), BirminghamSouthern (27-6), University of Mississippi (27-7), and Millsaps (56-0), plus a 7-7 tie with the University of Florida. Prior to that great year, the college football team was known as the “Collegians.” The students got together and decided that the name collegians just didn’t fit such a great team. A contest was announced and students were to submit possible nicknames which were to be voted on. “I looked around me and I found that one of the old Choctaw trails actually crossed the college campus marking the site,” said Davis. It was part of the original Natchez Trace. Thus, he entered the name “Choctaws.”

His suggestion, plus three other --- Yellowjackets, Dutchies and Warriors --- were among the final four to be voted on. Davis was quick to point out to his fellow students why three of the names would not be acceptable. “Yellowjackets,” he said, “were good only in dry weather and just the week before the football team had played on a muddy and wet field. Dutchies was in honor of the president of MC, Dr. J.W. Provine, and wouldn’t mean anything to people outside the school. Warriors? What Warriors? “I studied up on the Choctaws and knew what they could do. I let the students know that Choctaws were noted for their bravery and fair play and they had speed to burn and could run like a deer. They could also swim like a fish, if necessary.” His research and persuasion paid off, for when the final vote was taken, the name “Choctaws” won by a clear majority. Since that 1921 season athletic teams have been known as the Choctaws.
