FRIERSON FIELD Frierson Field has been the home of the Choctaws for over three decades thanks to the generosity of Pete Frierson and Frierson Building Supply. The facility features a grandstand area directly behind home plate that seats up to 1,200 people, and an enclosed pressbox atop the grandstand. The pressbox has heating and cooling and features two levels of seating that can accommodate up to twelve people and two broadcast crews. In 2005, a covered practice facility was constructed on the third base side of the stadium. The facility has enough space for two fulllength batting cages, as well as bullpen. The scoreboard was added in 2002 giving the Choctaws one of the larger boards in the American Southwest Conference.

RICE FIELD HOUSE On September 25, 2014, the Rice Field House was officially dedicated in a ceremony on a sun-drenched day at Frierson Field. MC President Dr. Lee Royce, Athletic Director Mike Jones, Head Coach Brian Owens and the entire team joined up to personally thank Mike Rice, a 1977 MC graduate, former Choctaws baseball star and member of the university’s Board of Trustees. A member of the MC Sports Hall of Fame, Rice played 100 games during his career with the Choctaws. He batted a solid .332 and was a Gulf South Conference leader in home runs, triples and doubles. At one point, the MC baseball player ranked No. 2 in the nation in home runs. “We give thanks to the man who made this vision come true,’’ Owens said. “This is an outstanding facility. In future years, Mississippi College fans will see future Major League Baseball draft picks using the Rice Field House at Frierson Field.”

CHARLES and ALINE WILLIAMS STRENGTH CENTER Mississippi College boasts one of the premier strength facilities in the country among Division II universities. The Charles and Aline Williams Strength Center has more than 5,000 square feet of working area and provides Choctaw athletes with top of the line equipment necessary to the success of an athletics program. The facility was originally furnished with state of the art strength equipment made possible by the donation of Mrs. Aline Williams in memory of her husband Charles H. Williams. In 2014, the strength center underwent a renovation as new equipment was brought in throughout the building. The strength center contains the latest and best equipment such as Hammer strength equipment, three power clean platforms, rubberized dumbbells for Olympic lifts, three squat racks, cardiovascular equipment, and numerous other machines for use by all Mississippi college student athletes. The strength center is located adjacent to Robinson-Hale stadium and provides a deck overlooking the football field for recruiting visits. The field can also be seen from inside the weight room with wall to wall windows on three sides of the facility.

Mike

JONES

Athletic Director jones01@mc.edu Mike Jones is stepping into his 13th season as the full-time athletic director after an incredibly successful basketball career at MC. Jones returned to his position as the full-time athletic director in 2008 after stepping down as head coach of the men’s basketball program following the 2007-08 season. During his 20-year coaching career, including sixteen seasons at MC, the Hall of Fame coach put together a career record of 436-130 (.770). As athletic director, Jones has helped build one of the top athletic departments in the American Southwest Conference. In 12 years overseeing the athletics department, he has given all of MC’s programs an opportunity for success with improved facilities through fund-raising. In the 2009-10 season, every MC athletics team qualified for postseason play, and all but two teams had winning records. Under his leadership, the athletics department was able to raise over one million dollars for the addition of an artificial playing surface to the football field and new surrounding track facility. Under his watch, a new soccer complex was constructed in 2005 and a new fieldhouse was constructed in 2011. Major renovations were also made to A.E. Wood Coliseum in 2008.

6

In his first round as head coach of the Choctaws, Jones led MC to 14 consecutive winning seasons overall, including five straight NCAA Tournament appearances at his alma mater. Jones led MC to four ASC championships in 1998, 1999, 2002, and 2007. In the 2007 season, the Choctaws reached as high as a #3 national ranking. Coach Jones earned three ASC Coach of the Year honors in 1998, 1999, and 2007, and his players consistently appeared on the All-Conference and All-Academic teams at the end of the season. Emphasizing defense, the Choctaws led the ASC in scoring and field goal percentage defense in 2007. Mike made the move to Mississippi College following a four-year stint at Copiah-Lincoln Community College where he dominated the state and earned national prestige. During his tenure, Jones’ teams were consistently ranked in the National Junior College Athletic Association’s Top-Twenty Poll. He took teams to the National Junior College Tournament where the 1988 team finished seventh. His teams were State Junior College Champions in 1998 and were two-time Region 23 Champions. For his accomplishments, Jones was named Region 23 Junior College Coach of the Year in 1986 an 1988. On October 16, 1996, the Copiah-Lincoln community game Jones the ultimate honor; they inducted him into their 1996 Sports Hall of Fame Class. Jones’ coaching success took no one by surprise after his stellar background as an assistant. Before going to Co-Lin, Jones spent eight seasons as an assistant at the University of Southern Mississippi.

Coach Jones helped raise over $160,000 at the MC Athletics Dinner in 2012, where former Atlanta Braves pitcher John Smoltz was the keynote speaker. The Athletics Dinner has hosted speakers such as Gene Stallings, Oakland A’s outfielder Seth Smith, Robert Khayat, Sylvester Croom, Mike Bianco, and Jeff Brantley.

After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Education at Mississippi College in 1975, Jones served as a graduate assistant at MC and was responsible for all scouting and recruiting. He later received a Master of Education in School Administration in 1977.

After a four-year hiatus, Coach Jones returned to the bench for two seasons from 2006-08 where his Choctaws compiled a 46-9 record overall and a 35-5 conference mark. In the ‘06-’07 season, Jones led MC to a third consecutive ASC Championship and a trip to the “Sweet Sixteen” of the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Mike is the son of Juanita Bridges of New Hebron, MS, and is married to Jane Jones of New Hebron. They have two children, a son Michael and a daughter Mandy. Michael is married to their daughter-in-law Amy. Mandy is married to their son-in-law Taylor Sisson. Coach Jones has four grandchildren, Zach, Ansley Kate, Will and Charlotte.

Susan

MUSSELWHITE Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance Senior Woman's Administrator musselwh@mc.edu

Susan Musselwhite enters her ninth year as the Assistant Athletic Director and 15th as Senior Woman Administrator / Compliance Officer

Administrative As the Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance, Susan Musselwhite is involved in many facets of the day to day operations of the athletics department for both the men and women. Musselwhite also directly oversees the planning and organization of special athletic department events including but not limited to fundraising, home game administration and facility use from outside entities. As the Senior Woman Administrator, Musselwhite’s main responsibility revolves around the well being of our athletes and the growth and development of our programs. In this role, Musselwhite was responsible for initiating the first Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). “Every campus is required to have a SAAC group per NCAA rules. This group was established to give student-athletes a voice on campus, as well as to the American Southwest Conference and the NCAA.” The SAAC is also a way for our athletes to be involved and promote many community service projects.

After joining the American Southwest Conference in 1998, Coach Musselwhite led the Lady Choctaws to a 205-152 overall record. In 1999, the Lady Choctaws finished 22-9, which at that time, ranked as one of the best records in school history. In 2002, the Lady Choctaws produced a 26-14 record and finished second overall after losing to East Texas Baptist in the ASC Championship game. In 2005 Musselwhite received Co-Coach of the Year honors that she shared with Louisiana College coach Tim Whitman. The 2006 season concluded with the Lady Choctaws finishing with a 24-16 overall record and a third place finish after losing in the semi-final game of the ASC Championship tournament. Several Lady Choctaws received post season honors and Musselwhite was named the East Division “Coach of the Year.” Musselwhite attributes the programs success to the growth of the sport of fastpitch softball. “When I started coaching at Mississippi College, fastpitch softball was new to most of the high schools in Mississippi and non existant at the junior college level. The emergence of fastpitch softball as an Olympic sport drew immediate recognition to the sport. The NCAA quickly followed by adding the sport as a championship sport and it has not stopped growing since.

Personal A native of Southaven, Mississippi, Musselwhite received her Bachelor of Education degree from Mississippi College in December of 1994 and completed her Masters of Education in August of 1996. Musselwhite was inducted into the Mississippi College Sports Hall of Fame in April 2006. Musselwhite also serves an instructor in the Department of Kinesiology and has been a Clinton Parks and Recreation Advisory Board member since 2005.

Serving as the Compliance Officer, Musselwhite is responsible for certifying the eligibility for the more than 400 student-athletes on campus as well as serving as a campus liaison between Mississippi College, the American Southwest Conference and the NCAA regarding ever changing rules and regulations. “I am very fortunate to be able to continue my career at Mississippi College in this role. I am especially grateful for the opportunity to work with Mike Jones, our coaches and our staff and to be a part of such a successful program.”

Coaching Before being named Assistant Athletic Director in the Fall of 2006, Musselwhite served as the Head Softball Coach at Mississippi College. After completing a four year career and serving one as a graduate assistant, Musselwhite took over the softball program in its Division III inception and guided the program to 7 consecutive 20+ win seasons and 9 winning seasons in a row. As the Head Softball coach, Musselwhite tried to be an ambassador for the sport of softball by being a community resource. Musselwhite conducted many player clinics as well as coach’s clinics trying to improve the knowledge level and skill level of players and coaches around the state of Mississippi.

OVERVIEW Season Outlook The Mississippi College baseball team will begin a new era this spring when they get back into Division II and the Gulf South Conference, playing their first full GSC schedule since the 1996 season. The Choctaws had a successful run in Division III and the American Southwest Conference, advancing to the ASC Tournament 14 times in 17 seasons and qualifying for the NCAA Tournament three times. They would win the ASC championship in 2003 and set a school record with 39 wins in 2010. Head coach Brian Owens enters his 9th season at the helm and 10th in the program. The former Mississippi State standout has tallied 193 career victories and will look to reach the 200-win milestone this season. “This is an exciting time to be part of the Mississippi College athletic department,” said Owens. “I believe we are going back to where we belong. The Gulf South Conference is one of the best in the country, and we have a big challenge ahead of us. I think it’s a challenge that this program is ready to accept head on.”

PITCHERS While the Choctaws have several new faces in the lineup this season, they will rely heavily on two returners in the starting rotation. Senior Brooks Fortenberry and Jayme Monroe combined for nine wins in 22 starts in 2014, each posting an ERA below 3.30. Fortenberry will climb up the MC pitching record books this season as he is poised to finish in the top-10 in both innings pitched and strikeouts in his career. The Magee native had 71 strikeouts in 81.1 innings last season.

Two other newcomers pushing for time in the weekend rotation will be junior Taylor Olsen and freshman Jake Fraze. Olsen is also a transfer from Gulf Coast and played his high school ball at Mississippi powerhouse, Pascagoula HS. Fraze is a left-hander from Plano, Texas that was impressive in fall ball and should see time on the mound in his rookie season. Coming out of the bullpen will be juniors Tyler Scholl and Wesley Wilkinson. Scholl is the all-time saves leader in Northwest MS CC history, and Wilkinson helped lead Hinds CC to the 2014 NJCAA World Series, where the Eagles finished 2nd in the nation.

The recruiting class boasts several impressive arms that will make an impact right away. Junior Kyle Cumlander transferred from Mississippi Gulf Coast and has been named to the GSC Top Newcomers List. The Mobile native will push for time in the starting rotation.

The battle for the starting spot at third base looks to be coming down to junior J.C. Heflin and freshman Colton Johnson. Heflin is a transfer from MS Gulf Coast CC, while Johnson is a rookie from West Jones HS. The competition for the corner infield spot could last until opening day.

CATCHERS The Choctaws will be looking for a new signal-caller in 2015 as Zach Evans graduated following the 2014 season. The Taylorsville native was the starting catcher for three seasons, and MC will have to work quickly to find someone to fill the hole. Junior Caleb Upton appears to be the favorite for the starting spot after an impressive fall season. The Hinds CC transfer also helped lead the Eagles to a runner-up finish at the NJCAA World Series. Upton was also a quarterback in high school, where he was a two-time All-State selection at Cathedral HS. Senior Caleb Morris and freshman Grant Veteto will also push for playing time this spring. Morris was the starting second baseman in 2014 for MC, but with a talented recruiting class in the infield, Morris made the move behind the plate. Veteto is a rookie from Spain Park High School, where he hit .360 with six home runs in his career.

Monroe went 5-5 with a 3.28 ERA and posted two one-hit performances in 2014. The Clinton native is expected to miss the first portion of the season due to surgery following last year, but should be ready to contribute quickly. The Choctaws are also bringing back a couple of relief pitchers in seniors Andy Olmsted and Grady Turman. Olmsted missed the first part of last year due to a collapsed lung suffered in preseason workouts. The Brandon native is expected to play a huge role out of the bullpen this season. Turman went 3-2 with two saves in 2014. The Clinton native walked just three batters in 12.2 innings pitched.

Also joining Hall up the middle will be juniors Tanner Densford and Logan Ferrell. Densford is a transfer from Northwest MS CC where he posted a .981 fielding percentage in two seasons. Ferrell is a versatile player that will see action at second, third and short this season.

AKIKO THOMPSON

OUTFIELD The Choctaws will also have the majority of their outfield being new faces, but sophomore Hunter Bolin will come back after starting 35 games in his rookie season. The Starkville native his .298 with 15 runs scored and 13 stolen bases, making just two errors in center and left field last season. While they will have new faces in the outfield, the Choctaws will have a senior roaming center field in Southeastern Louisiana transfer, Akiko Thompson. The Clinton native was a two-sport star at Clinton High School and played ball at Hinds CC for two years before going to SE Louisiana. The superathletic outfielder will give the Choctaws some pop and speed at the top of the lineup.

CALEB MORRIS

INFIELD Senior Marty Stringfellow returns as the lone starter on the infield from last season. The Lucedale native started 31 games at first base in 2014 and led the team with a .362 batting average. He tallied 20 RBI and did not make an error all season.

Juniors Colton Caver and Garrett Odom will also be in the mix in the outfield for MC this season. Caver is a smart hitter that can drive the ball to all fields. The East MS CC transfer will likely hit in the 3-hole and play right field opening day. Odom can play any of the outfield positions and possesses talent at the plate that will keep him in the lineup. Also joining the talented group of outfielders will be freshman Kyle Smith. The former Petal HS standout was MC’s starting quarterback in 6-of-10 games last season, leading the Choctaws with five rushing touchdowns.

Backing up Stringfellow at first base will be junior Toler Robinson and sophomore Austin Warkentin. Robinson was also a part of the Hinds CC team last season and his power will find him a spot in the lineup. Warkentin comes to MC from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and is a tranfer from Wayland Baptist University.

ANDY OLMSTED 12

The middle infield is loaded with talent as junior Hunter Hall will be the opening day starting shortstop after transferring from Pensacola State College. The Hoover, Ala. native joined Cumlander on the GSC Top Newcomers List.

Brian

OWENS Head Coach

Mississippi College Head Coach Brian Owens enters his 10th year in the program and ninth season as the head coach of the Choctaws. Over his eight seasons, he has compiled a record of 193-154 overall. Over his eight-year career, the Choctaws are 112-64 (.636) in games at Frierson Field. The Choctaws played their final season in Division III and the American Southwest Conference in 2014, finishing with a 21-19 record and a 5th-place finish in the league. Brooks Fortenberry was a Third-Team All-ASC selection, while Robbie Jernigan, Spencer Wilson and Blake McIlwain were Honorable Mentions. The 2013 season got off to a slow start, but the Choctaws would get things going as they grabbed a three-game sweep of Huntingdon in Clinton at the end of March. Each of the games were decided by one run, but the most exciting game came on Friday night when MC scored six runs in the ninth inning, eventually winning in extra innings, 7-6. Four Choctaws earned All-ASC recognition as Brett Hightower and Josh Perez were Second Team selections and Kyle Blount and Brooks Fortenberry were Honorable Mention. In 2012, the Choctaws advanced to the ASC Championship Tournament after pulling out a series win at Texas Lutheran in the ASC Championship Series. The Choctaws went 21-24 but won four of their last five games to clinch the #3 seed in the ASC Tournament. MC was 4th in the league with a .309 batting average and finished 3rd in the league with 292 runs scored. J’Marcus Brooks and Mike Kerdock were First Team All-ASC selections, while Ryan Glover and Brett Hightower earned Second Team nods. Hightower and Kerdock were also named to the ABCA All-West Region Team. The 2011 season saw the Choctaws advance to the ASC Tournament for the 11th consecutive time and 12th time in 13 tries, which is the most of any team in the league. MC led the nation in home runs (50) and home runs per game (1.19). The Choctaws also led the American Southwest Conference in batting average (.330), slugging percentage (.504), runs scored (373), and runs batted in (329). The pitching staff also led the league with 321 strikeouts. MC went on a streak of winning 11 of 12 games to help clinch a berth in the conference tournament. Four different Choctaws were named to the All-ASC teams (Brandon Benton, Spencer Brunson, Clay Crosswhite, and Stuart Magee). In 2010, Owens led the Choctaws to the most wins (39) and least losses (11) in school history as MC advanced to the West Region championship game for the first time. The Choctaws led the

league in ERA with a mark of 4.06 in 423.0 innings pitched. MC opened the season 17-1, including a 15-game winning streak. In 2010, MC set school records for at-bats (1786), runs scored (456), hits (620), batting average (.347), doubles (114), triples (22), total bases (910), and runs batted in (397). MC also set pitching records in 2010, including strikeouts (351), wins (39), losses (11), and innings pitched (423.0). Overall, 12 Choctaws earned All-ASC selections with Bo Bell being named Hitter of the Year and Tyler Seaman being named Pitcher of the Year. In 2009, Owens led the Choctaws to an ASC East Co-Championship with a 30-16 overall mark and a 14-4 conference record. The Choctaws eliminated Mary HardinBaylor in the ASC Championship Series and advanced to the championship game of the ASC Tournament. MC finished third in the ASC with a .337 batting average and led the league with 111 stolen bases. Under Owens’ tutelage, the Choctaws had two All-Americans in Brett Hinson and Bo Bell. Hinson and Bell also earned ABCA-Rawlings First Team All-West Region honors with Hinson being named the region’s Pitcher of the Year. Tim Bruss, Tyler Seaman, and Bell earned All-ASC First Team honors. Seaman was named ASC Newcomer of the Year after throwing two no-hitters on the year. Overall, eight Choctaws earned All-Conference honors. In 2008, Owens led the Choctaws to the ASC Championship Tournament and a 2419 overall record, inclduing an outstanding 14-5 mark in the conference. The Choctaws reached the tournament after beating Mary Hardin-Baylor in two games in the ASC Champioship series. Owens is the primary

pitching coach and watched the team ERA improve from 6.41 in 2007 to 5.40 in 2008. For his efforts, Owens was named ASC East Division Coach of the Year and had five players earn All-ASC honors. In 2006, Owens served as the pitching coach and top assistant coach for the Choctaws and put together one of the top pitching staffs in the ASC. Under his tutelage junior pitcher Jonathan Russell earned ASC East Division Pitcher of the Year honors. Russell led the conference in wins (10) and innings pitched (88.2). He finised the season 103 with a 3.05 earned run average and 79 strikeouts, good enough for second in the league. The entire staff ranked 4th in the ASC with an earned run average of 4.87 and led the conference with 324 strikeouts. They were second in the league with an opposing batting average of .271. Before joining the staff at MC, Owens spent two years at Tennessee Tech where he filled the position of pitching coach. At Tennessee Tech, Owens was responsible for the pitching staff as well as field maintenance. He also was involved with fund-raising efforts and recruiting. Owens spent his first season of coaching as a student assistant on Ron Polk’s staff at Mississippi State University. There he assisted with the pitching staff and performed gameday duties with the staff. He oversaw the bullpen during the games. He also worked summer camps with the Bulldogs as an instructor. Prior to his coaching career, Owens spent his collegiate playing career at Mississippi State and also Hinds Community College. He and his wife Anna have two children, Ella and Parker Michael.

GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE Academic excellence and a leadership role in the NCAA’s Division II make the Gulf South Conference (GSC) something special. The GSC is a charter member of Division II and enters its 44th year as one of the premier conferences at any NCAA level. In the summer of 1970, six college presidents met to discuss about athletics; when the meeting ended, a new league emerged—the MidSouth Conference—started by, and to this day run by, the CEOs, the first in NCAA history. It is that CEO-control and involvement that makes the league work and its 14 championships (football; men’s & women’s cross country, men’s & women’s soccer; volleyball, men’s & women’s basketball, men’s & women’s tennis, men’s & women’s golf, softball and baseball) so intensely contested--in a collegial manner, of course. From that point forward, the GSC has been giant steps ahead of the D-II pack. Beginning in 1997, the league found neutral sites paying sizeable guarantees for most of its team championships. NCAA Conventions regularly feature GSC-proposed or -inspired legislation. No one wins more regionals or earns more NCAA post-season bids. In 2004, the league purchased its own built-to-its-specification office space. But the crowning moment came in 2005-06, when the GSC debuted its highly successful “GSC-TV Live” package which included nine football games (now 11) and its men’s & women’s basketball tournament finals. Add to that the branded “GSC DigiNet” video platform and the live-streaming of most of its championships, and you can see why the GSC is a Conference paving the way in the 21st century! We take pride in our 48 National Team Championships in 13 sports and more than 100 regional titles, especially because there is no sacrifice on the academic side, where GSC student-athletes regularly earn Academic All-America. The GSC opened the 2012-13 year with NCAA Championships, thanks to West Florida’s first-ever NCAA Women’s Soccer Title and Valdosta State’s third all-time Football Crown. Delta State, Florence State (now North Alabama), Jacksonville State, Livingston (now West Alabama), Tennessee-Martin and Troy State were the charter members. Scheduling problems for the 1970-71 academic year limited the GSC to football, won by Jacksonville State. In 1971, the addition of Southeast Louisiana (SELA) and Nichols State

increased the membership to eight. The league opened an office in Hammond, LA, changed its name to the Gulf South Conference and began championships in nine men’s sports. Mississippi College and Northwestern Louisiana (NWLA, now Northwestern State) joined in 1972 and two years later, NELA left for Division I, followed by SELA and Nicholls State in 1979. The conference continued with seven teams until 1981, when the CEOs admitted Valdosta State and West Georgia (1983). In 1991, Tennessee-Martin and Troy State went Division I, briefly dropping the GSC back to seven members. An aggressive expansion under the guidance of new Commissioner Nate Salant resulted in 10 new members: Lincoln Memorial (1992-93); Alabama Huntsville, Henderson State, Central Arkansas and Mississippi University for Women (199394); West Florida (1994-95); and Arkansas-Monticello, Arkansas Tech, Montevallo and Southern Arkansas (1995-96). Jacksonville State moved to Division I at the end of 1992-93. Mississippi College dropped to Division III at the end of 1995-96, and was replaced by Christian Brothers to keep the Conference at 16 schools. In July 2000, the GSC welcomed Harding University and Ouachita Baptist University, making it the largest NCAA-playing conference at any level with 18 schools. MUW dropped its athletics program at the end of the 2002-03 season, decreasing the membership to 17. Central Arkansas reclassified to Division I and Lincoln Memorial moved to the South Atlantic Conference following the 2006-07 year. Montevallo’s departure for the Peach Belt Conference dropped the number to 14. The GSC moved away from divisional play after the 2010-11 season after its six Arkansas members broke away, dropping the membership to eight. Thanks to an aggressive expansion plan, the GSC sponsored the Division II applications of Union University (TN) and Shorter University (GA), which were accepted into the NCAA process in July 2011, and are expected to become official members for 2014-15. The next step in bolstering its membership came in 2012, backing the Division II application of Lee University (TN) which was accepted by the NCAA in July of 2012. The league added its first-ever associate member, Florida Tech, in football only in 2013. The Conference added an old friend back into the fold when Mississippi College’s application to rejoin Division II was approved in September of 2013.
