Mike

JONES

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR JONES01@MC.EDU Mike Jones is stepping into his 13th season as the full-time athletic director after an incredibly successful basketball career at MC. Jones returned to his position as the full-time athletic director in 2008 after stepping down as head coach of the men’s basketball program following the 2007-08 season. During his 20-year coaching career, including sixteen seasons at MC, the Hall of Fame coach put together a career record of 436-130 (.770). As athletic director, Jones has helped build one of the top athletic departments in the American Southwest Conference. In 12 years overseeing the athletics department, he has given all of MC’s programs an opportunity for success with improved facilities through fund-raising. In the 2009-10 season, every MC athletics team qualified for postseason play, and all but two teams had winning records. Under his leadership, the athletics department was able to raise over one million dollars for the addition of an artificial playing surface to the football field and new surrounding track facility. Under his watch, a new soccer complex was constructed in 2005 and a new fieldhouse was constructed in 2011. Major renovations were also made to A.E. Wood Coliseum in 2008.

6

In his first round as head coach of the Choctaws, Jones led MC to 14 consecutive winning seasons overall, including five straight NCAA Tournament appearances at his alma mater. Jones led MC to four ASC championships in 1998, 1999, 2002, and 2007. In the 2007 season, the Choctaws reached as high as a #3 national ranking. Coach Jones earned three ASC Coach of the Year honors in 1998, 1999, and 2007, and his players consistently appeared on the All-Conference and All-Academic teams at the end of the season. Emphasizing defense, the Choctaws led the ASC in scoring and field goal percentage defense in 2007. Mike made the move to Mississippi College following a four-year stint at Copiah-Lincoln Community College where he dominated the state and earned national prestige. During his tenure, Jones’ teams were consistently ranked in the National Junior College Athletic Association’s Top-Twenty Poll. He took teams to the National Junior College Tournament where the 1988 team finished seventh. His teams were State Junior College Champions in 1998 and were two-time Region 23 Champions. For his accomplishments, Jones was named Region 23 Junior College Coach of the Year in 1986 an 1988. On October 16, 1996, the Copiah-Lincoln community game Jones the ultimate honor; they inducted him into their 1996 Sports Hall of Fame Class. Jones’ coaching success took no one by surprise after his stellar background as an assistant. Before going to Co-Lin, Jones spent eight seasons as an assistant at the University of Southern Mississippi.

Coach Jones helped raise over $160,000 at the MC Athletics Dinner in 2012, where former Atlanta Braves pitcher John Smoltz was the keynote speaker. The Athletics Dinner has hosted speakers such as Gene Stallings, Oakland A’s outfielder Seth Smith, Robert Khayat, Sylvester Croom, Mike Bianco, and Jeff Brantley.

After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Education at Mississippi College in 1975, Jones served as a graduate assistant at MC and was responsible for all scouting and recruiting. He later received a Master of Education in School Administration in 1977.

After a four-year hiatus, Coach Jones returned to the bench for two seasons from 2006-08 where his Choctaws compiled a 46-9 record overall and a 35-5 conference mark. In the ‘06-’07 season, Jones led MC to a third consecutive ASC Championship and a trip to the “Sweet Sixteen” of the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Mike is the son of Juanita Bridges of New Hebron, MS, and is married to Jane Jones of New Hebron. They have two children, a son Michael and a daughter Mandy. Michael is married to their daughter-in-law Amy. Mandy is married to their son-in-law Taylor Sisson. Coach Jones has four grandchildren, Zach, Ansley Kate, Will and Charlotte.

Junior TORY RICE is expected to make in immediate impact in the starting lineup after a stellar career at Itawamba CC. The Starkville native averaged 10 points and eight rebounds per game while being named to the MACJC Academic All-State Team. Rice has an uncanny ability to get to the basket to score and rebound with the best in the league.

OVERVIEW Season Outlook The Mississippi College men’s basketball team will enter a new and familiar era this season as they transition back to Division II and the Gulf South Conference. They were part of the league from 1972-96, winning two championships (1977-78 & 1994-95). MC has spent the last 19 years (1996-2014) in Division III and the American Southwest Conference, winning six conference titles and nine East Division crowns. While in transition from Division III to the GSC, the Choctaws will not be eligible for postseason play until the 2016-17 season, but the availability of athletic scholarships will allow MC to compete immediately with the top teams in the league. Head coach DON LOFTON enters his 11th season at the helm, sitting fourth in school history with 178 career wins. With another solid season, he could be on pace to move up to third, which is now held by James Q. Allen with 191 victories. “This is a great time to be a part of the Mississippi College athletic department,” said Lofton. “While this is a new experience for most, I believe this is where MC belongs and a place we can thrive for years to come. It will be a transition, but one our team is excited about taking on. The Choctaws return five players with significant starting experience and a recruiting class that will benefit the program immediately. Despite the jump in level of competition, the coaching staff is pleased where the team is heading into 2014-15.

POINT GUARD The Choctaws have a good mix of returning talent and newcomers to compete for the starting signalcaller. Junior CHRISTIAN HOWARD and sophomore JARED CASE each played big roles in their first seasons as Choctaws last year. Case started 19 games in his rookie campaign, averaging 4.5 points per game and leading the team with 60 assists. Howard provides athleticism at the point guard spot that allows him to defend the top guards in the league. Junior TRISTAN MOORE and freshman ANTONIO JOHNSON are going to be asked to contribute right away for coach Lofton and the crew. Moore, a transfer from Northwest Mississippi CC, can slash to the basket and score from the outside while leading the team. Johnson led the McComb HS Tigers to a 5A state championship last season, earning the Most Valuable Player honors as a result.

Junior CHRISTIAN ROBBINS and GIANCARLO SANTIAGO are also transfers that the Choctaws hope will contribute on the low block quickly. Robbins is a 6’10” player from Southwest Mississippi CC, who is known for his ability to block and change shots at the basket. Santiago possesses a great lowpost game and soft touch on the block.

EMMANUEL EZEJIOFO

WINGS On the outside, the Choctaws return one of the top three-point shooters in school history in senior JAY CASE. The Brookhaven native ranks 4th in the MC record books in 3-point field goal percentage (.466) and 8th with 61 made long balls last season. The Copiah-Lincoln CC transfer just got better as the season progressed, making at least four from behind the arc in six of the last 12 games of the year. Also returning with starting experience is senior JARON EDWARDS. The Franklinton, La. native opened last season as the starting point guard, but settled in more at the win as the season went along. He shot 39% from the three-point line and tallied 40 assists on the year. The William Carey transfer gives MC another steady option on the wing. While Case and Edwards are known for their outside shooting, the Choctaws also return a true slasher in senior EMMANUEL EZEJIOFO. The former Hillcrest standout is the team’s leading returning scorer at 13.9 points per game, also pulling down 5.1 boards per contest with 58 assists. “EZ”, as he is known on the team, is just about unstoppable when he gets his outside shot to fall.

The Choctaws landed one of their top recruiting targets in the spring in freshman STACEY MACK. The McComb HS standout helped lead the Tigers to a 5A state championship and was named a Second Team All-State selection after averaging 13.8 points, 9.2 rebounds and 2.8 blocked shots per game. Mack is a raw talent that will only get better as he develops.

SCHEDULE MC will play three exhibition games before the regular season starts, traveling to Southern Miss (Nov. 6) and Stephen F. Austin (Nov. 14) with a game in Jackson against William Carey (Nov. 8) in between. The Choctaws open the regular season at home against Spring Hill College on November 20th before closing out non-conference play on November 25th at Belhaven. MC’s first Gulf South Conference game comes on December 4th when they host West Alabama, followed by a home game against West Georgia. The first two road conference contests will come against Union and Christian Brothers the following weekend. After alternating home and road games over the next three weeks, the Choctaws will renew their rivalry with Delta State on January 17th in Clinton. They will travel up to Cleveland for the return trip to close the season on February 26th. Following the first game against DSU, the Choctaws will play the second half of their GSC schedule against the 11 other league teams. While they are ineligible for GSC or NCAA postseason, they can play for the NCCAA Tournament following the season.

Outside of the returning guards, the coaching staff is excited about junior JOHNNY RUCKER and freshman DAVID FISHER being added to the mix. Rucker is a transfer from Mississippi Delta CC and has a good mix of outside shot and the ability to cut to the basket. Fisher comes to MC from Rome, Ga. where he was a standout player at Model HS.

POSTS The Choctaws will have to replace their top scorer from a season ago in Lakin Ford, who averaged 15.1 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. The transfer from East Mississippi CC started nearly every game of his two-year career and will leave big shoes to fill down low.

JARED CASE 12

The lone returner on the block is senior RAYNER FREDRICK. The Overland Park, Kan. native started 15 games last season and averaged 9.4 points and a team-high 7.0 rebounds per game. He also finished second on the team with 59 assists. Fredrick provides unmatched energy on the floor and will have to provide leadership for the new group of post players in Coach Lofton’s scheme

Don

LOFTON HEAD COACH

Head coach Don Lofton enters his 11th season at the helm and 31st with the program, overall. The Choctaws went through their final season in the American Southwest Conference and Division III during the 2013-14 year, going 11-14 and finishing 8th in the league standings. Senior Lakin Ford and junior Emmanuel Ezejiofo earned All-ASC honors. The 2012-13 season saw the Choctaws advance to the ASC Tournament for the 15th time in 15 tries and as they earned the #3 seed from the East Division with a 15-11 record, overall. Junior Brandon Blake was named a D3hoops.com All-South Region selection, while also earning a spot on the All-ASC Team. Senior Adam Smith was a Second Team selection, while Turmonte Ragland earned an All-Defensive Team selection. The Choctaws advanced to the ASC Tournament in the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons, making them the only team in the league to qualify for every tournament. In 2011-12, MC landed Trevon Malone on the All-ASC First Team. In the 2009-10 season, Lofton led the Choctaws to their 22nd consecutive winning season and a trip to the American Southwest Conference Tournament. MC finished 19-7 overall and 14-6 in the ASC, while finishing second on the East Division. In the 2008-09 season, the Choctaws advanced all the way to the ASC Championship Game before being ousted by Texas-Dallas. It would be the 10th time in 11 tournaments that the Choctaws advanced to the championship game. MC led the league with a .509 field goal percentage. Lofton had an incredibly successful run as head coach of the Choctaws for four years from 2003-2006. In four seasons at the helm, Lofton produced a 92-23 overall record including two American Southwest Conference Championships and back-to-back appearances in the “Sweet Sixteen” round of the NCAA Tournament. In the 2005-06 he led the Choctaws to a school record 29-2 season that ended with another appearance in the “Sweet Sixteen”. Lofton collected NCAA wins over Maryville University and Maryville College as a regional host of the first and second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Choctaws were the highest ranked team in the NCAA South Region rankings the entire season. In the 2004-05 Lofton led the Choctaws to the third most wins in school history (24) and just their second appearance in the NCAA Tournament “Sweet Sixteen”

16

round. The Choctaws were ranked #1 in the NCAA South Region ranking every week and won their seventh ASC East Division title in eight years. They also beat Maryville College in the second round of the NCAA tournament. After taking over the program from Hall of Fame coach Mike Jones, Lofton maintained the same level of success with four straight appearances in the ASC Championship game. That same season Lofton kept the streak alive by leading the team to eight straight wins to end the season and reach the title game. His team also led the ASC in scoring defense. In 2002-03, Lofton’s original season as Head Coach, he led the Choctaws to their fourth ASC Championship in six years. MC won 20 games and appeared in the NCAA Division III National Tournament for the sixth straight year. Lofton was also a vital part of the success achieved by the basketball program during his tenure at MC as an assistant coach. As the recruiting coordinator, he was responsible for maintaining the talent level necessary to keep the Choctaws in the upper echelon of teams in the country year in and year out. He also filled the position as the primary assistant to former head coach Mike Jones and was vitally involved in building the program to where it is today. “Coach Lofton has been around Mississippi College basketball for a long time,” said Athletic Director Mike Jones . “He knows the game and has been a big part of the success that we have enjoyed and experienced over the past years. He knows what it takes to be successful here at MC and has proven that during his 10 seasons.”

Lofton built himself the reputation of being a top recruiter and talent evaluator. Since MC’s move to Division III in the 1996-97 season, he has helped recruit some of the best talent in the American Southwest Conference. With him filling the role of recruiting coordinator, the Choctaws made five straight appearances in the NCAA tournament. They also won the ASC Championship three five of five seasons. During his last three seasons as an assistant, the Choctaws had five first team All-ASC selections and one ASC East Division Player of the Year. Lofton began his coaching career at Mississippi College as a graduate assistant in 1978-79, working for Coach Doug Hines. He also served in the same capacity during the 1979-80 season. Before returning as an assistant, Lofton coached at West Jones High School in Laurel, Miss., for four seasons. He began as an assistant coach and was the head coach for three seasons, 1982-85. He led the Mustangs to several outstanding seasons and was named Coach of the Year in the Southern Athletic Conference in 1982-83. Lofton was honored after the 1998-99 season by the National Association of Basketball Coaches for his outstanding service with the Merit Award. A 1974 graduate of Brookhaven High School, he began his college career at Mississippi College, playing football and golf. He received his bachelor of science degree in business administration in 1978 and completed the master of education degree in1983. Don and his wife Madelyn have three children: Davis, Jay and Elizabeth.

GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE Academic excellence and a leadership role in the NCAA’s Division II make the Gulf South Conference (GSC) something special. The GSC is a charter member of Division II and enters its 44th year as one of the premier conferences at any NCAA level. In the summer of 1970, six college presidents met to discuss about athletics; when the meeting ended, a new league emerged—the Mid-South Conference—started by, and to this day run by, the CEOs, the first in NCAA history. It is that CEO-control and involvement that makes the league work and its 14 championships (football; men’s & women’s cross country, men’s & women’s soccer; volleyball, men’s & women’s basketball, men’s & women’s tennis, men’s & women’s golf, softball and baseball) so intensely contested--in a collegial manner, of course. From that point forward, the GSC has been giant steps ahead of the D-II pack. Beginning in 1997, the league found neutral sites paying sizeable guarantees for most of its team championships. NCAA Conventions regularly feature GSC-proposed or -inspired legislation. No one wins more regionals or earns more NCAA post-season bids. In 2004, the league purchased its own built-to-its-specification office space. But the crowning moment came in 2005-06, when the GSC debuted its highly successful “GSC-TV Live” package which included nine football games (now 11) and its men’s & women’s basketball tournament finals. Add to that the branded “GSC DigiNet” video platform and the live-streaming of most of its championships, and you can see why the GSC is a Conference paving the way in the 21st century! We take pride in our 48 National Team Championships in 13 sports and more than 100 regional titles, especially because there is no sacrifice on the academic side, where GSC student-athletes regularly earn Academic All-America. The GSC opened the 2012-13 year with NCAA Championships, thanks to West Florida’s first-ever NCAA Women’s Soccer Title and Valdosta State’s third all-time Football Crown. Delta State, Florence State (now North Alabama), Jacksonville State, Livingston (now West Alabama), Tennessee-Martin and Troy State were the charter members. Scheduling problems for the 1970-71 academic year limited the GSC to football, won by Jacksonville State. In 1971, the addition

of Southeast Louisiana (SELA) and Nichols State increased the membership to eight. The league opened an office in Hammond, LA, changed its name to the Gulf South Conference and began championships in nine men’s sports. Mississippi College and Northwestern Louisiana (NWLA, now Northwestern State) joined in 1972 and two years later, NELA left for Division I, followed by SELA and Nicholls State in 1979. The conference continued with seven teams until 1981, when the CEOs admitted Valdosta State and West Georgia (1983). In 1991, TennesseeMartin and Troy State went Division I, briefly dropping the GSC back to seven members. An aggressive expansion under the guidance of new Commissioner Nate Salant resulted in 10 new members: Lincoln Memorial (1992-93); Alabama Huntsville, Henderson State, Central Arkansas and Mississippi University for Women (1993-94); West Florida (1994-95); and Arkansas-Monticello, Arkansas Tech, Montevallo and Southern Arkansas (1995-96). Jacksonville State moved to Division I at the end of 1992-93. Mississippi College dropped to Division III at the end of 1995-96, and was replaced by Christian Brothers to keep the Conference at 16 schools. In July 2000, the GSC welcomed Harding University and Ouachita Baptist University, making it the largest NCAA-playing conference at any level with 18 schools. MUW dropped its athletics program at the end of the 2002-03 season, decreasing the membership to 17. Central Arkansas reclassified to Division I and Lincoln Memorial moved to the South Atlantic Conference following the 2006-07 year. Montevallo’s departure for the Peach Belt Conference dropped the number to 14. The GSC moved away from divisional play after the 2010-11 season after its six Arkansas members broke away, dropping the membership to eight. Thanks to an aggressive expansion plan, the GSC sponsored the Division II applications of Union University (TN) and Shorter University (GA), which were accepted into the NCAA process in July 2011, and are expected to become official members for 2014-15. The next step in bolstering its membership came in 2012, backing the Division II application of Lee University (TN) which was accepted by the NCAA in July of 2012. The league added its first-ever associate member, Florida Tech, in football only in 2013. The Conference added an old friend back into the fold when Mississippi College’s application to rejoin Division II was approved in September of 2013.
