CHARLES AND ALINE WILLIAMS STRENGTH CENTER Mississippi College boasts one of the premier strength facilities in the country among Division II universities. The Charles and Aline Williams Strength Center has more than 5,000 square feet of working area and provides Choctaw athletes with top of the line equipment necessary to the success of an athletics program. The facility was originally furnished with state of the art strength equipment made possible by the donation of Mrs. Aline Williams in memory of her husband Charles H. Williams. In 2014, the strength center underwent a renovation as new equipment was brought in throughout the building. The strength center contains the latest and best equipment such as Hammer strength equipment, three power clean platforms, rubberized dumbbells for Olympic lifts, three squat racks, cardiovascular equipment, and numerous other machines for use by all Mississippi college student athletes. The strength center is located adjacent to Robinson-Hale stadium and provides a deck overlooking the football field for recruiting visits. The field can also be seen from inside the weight room with wall to wall windows on three sides of the facility.

Susan

MUSSELWHITE Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance Senior Woman's Administrator musselwh@mc.edu

Susan Musselwhite enters her ninth year as the Assistant Athletic Director and 15th as Senior Woman Administrator / Compliance Officer

ADMINISTRATIVE As the Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance, Susan Musselwhite is involved in many facets of the day to day operations of the athletics department for both the men and women. Musselwhite also directly oversees the planning and organization of special athletic department events including but not limited to fundraising, home game administration and facility use from outside entities. As the Senior Woman Administrator, Musselwhite’s main responsibility revolves around the well being of our athletes and the growth and development of our programs. In this role, Musselwhite was responsible for initiating the first Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). “Every campus is required to have a SAAC group per NCAA rules. This group was established to give student-athletes a voice on campus, as well as to the American Southwest Conference and the NCAA.” The SAAC is also a way for our athletes to be involved and promote many community service projects.

After joining the American Southwest Conference in 1998, Coach Musselwhite led the Lady Choctaws to a 205-152 overall record. In 1999, the Lady Choctaws finished 22-9, which at that time, ranked as one of the best records in school history. In 2002, the Lady Choctaws produced a 26-14 record and finished second overall after losing to East Texas Baptist in the ASC Championship game. In 2005 Musselwhite received Co-Coach of the Year honors that she shared with Louisiana College coach Tim Whitman. The 2006 season concluded with the Lady Choctaws finishing with a 24-16 overall record and a third place finish after losing in the semi-final game of the ASC Championship tournament. Several Lady Choctaws received post season honors and Musselwhite was named the East Division “Coach of the Year.” Musselwhite attributes the programs success to the growth of the sport of fastpitch softball. “When I started coaching at Mississippi College, fastpitch softball was new to most of the high schools in Mississippi and non existant at the junior college level. The emergence of fastpitch softball as an Olympic sport drew immediate recognition to the sport. The NCAA quickly followed by adding the sport as a championship sport and it has not stopped growing since.

PERSONAL A native of Southaven, Mississippi, Musselwhite received her Bachelor of Education degree from Mississippi College in December of 1994 and completed her Masters of Education in August of 1996. Musselwhite was inducted into the Mississippi College Sports Hall of Fame in April 2006. Musselwhite also serves an instructor in the Department of Kinesiology and has been a Clinton Parks and Recreation Advisory Board member since 2005.

Serving as the Compliance Officer, Musselwhite is responsible for certifying the eligibility for the more than 400 student-athletes on campus as well as serving as a campus liaison between Mississippi College, the American Southwest Conference and the NCAA regarding ever changing rules and regulations. “I am very fortunate to be able to continue my career at Mississippi College in this role. I am especially grateful for the opportunity to work with Mike Jones, our coaches and our staff and to be a part of such a successful program.”

COACHING Before being named Assistant Athletic Director in the Fall of 2006, Musselwhite served as the Head Softball Coach at Mississippi College. After completing a four year career and serving one as a graduate assistant, Musselwhite took over the softball program in its Division III inception and guided the program to 7 consecutive 20+ win seasons and 9 winning seasons in a row. As the Head Softball coach, Musselwhite tried to be an ambassador for the sport of softball by being a community resource. Musselwhite conducted many player clinics as well as coach’s clinics trying to improve the knowledge level and skill level of players and coaches around the state of Mississippi.

Senior AnnMarie Harris, a transfer from Florida A&M, looks to have what it takes to step in right away and play. She played in 31 games, starting 17 for the Rattlers last season, shooting 47% from the field. Harris has good size down low and is a solid rebounder after averaging nearly four per game at the Division I school.

OVERVIEW Season Outlook For the first time since the 1995-96 season, the Mississippi College women’s basketball team will be playing a full Division II schedule and be competing in the Gulf South Conference, a league MC was a part of from 1972-96. While in transition from Division III to the GSC, the Lady Choctaws will not be eligible for postseason play until the 2016-17 season, but the availability of athletic scholarships will allow MC to compete immediately with the top teams in the league.

Sophomore Zaneta Kubicka, from Wschowa, Poland, is another player that gives the Lady Choctaws some athleticism in the post. In Coach Duke’s postheavy offense, Kubicka is the type of player that can thrive. She transfers from Lander University after a solid high school career that saw her average 14.6 points and 9.8 rebounds per game.

Head coach PAUL ALLEN DUKE enters his 20th season at the helm as the winningest coach in school history with 331 career victories. He is on pace to coach his 500th game this season on January 24th against West Alabama. “We are excited to be making this transition back to the Gulf South Conference,” said Duke. “It will be a big challenge but one that our team is ready to tackle.” The Lady Choctaws return two starters from last season, and five total players come back from a team that finished 11-14 and 6th in their final year in the American Southwest Conference. Mix that with a talented group of recruits, and the Lady Choctaws are poised to have a great year in 2014-15.

POINT GUARD The Lady Choctaws return senior LAUREN BETHLY, who started 16 games at point guard last season. The transfer from the University of Mobile made an immediate impact on the team in 2013-14, finishing second on the squad with 77 assists and 41 steals. While not called on to score often, Bethly has a quick first step and can get to the basket and finish. She will be looked at to lead a young team with several newcomers being asked to contribute.

MOLLIE BLAIR

WINGS Sophomore MOLLIE BLAIR also returns to the team after starting 20 games at multiple positions last season. She was called upon to play point guard in spots, but with Bethly and Hill emerging as the signal-callers this season, she can move back to her more natural position on the outside. Blair is a smart player that is always in the right spot. She averaged 4.5 points per game in 2013-14. Senior Jaianah Matthew also returns with starting experience after starting the final 10 games of the season last year. She led the team with 36 made three-pointers and was 30-of-35 (86%) from the free throw line. She scored a season-high 25 points against Mary Hardin-Baylor last year and was in double-figures in 11 contests.

Coming in to compete for the starting spot will be junior ALLIE HILL, a transfer from the University of Texas-Pan American. The Plainfield, Ill. native played in 26 games at the Division I school, scoring a season-high 12 points against Grand Canyon University. She also led her high school team to two state championships at Bolingbrook High.

Also returning at the wings will be senior SHUNTEQUA LOFTON and sophomores TORI EARNHART and SHANIQUA LOVE. Lofton is an extremely athletic player that plays solid defense and can slash to the basket. Love returns after missing all of 2013-14 with an injury and Earnhart has really improved her shooting since arriving on campus.

Freshman Shuntavia Rodgers is the lone rookie on this year’s team. The coaching staff feels that she has a huge upside and will contribute to the team in big ways going forward.

The coaching staff brought in two wing players that will be asked to contribute from the opening tip in juniors ASHLEY MINOR and KRISTEN SAMPSON. Minor is a transfer from Copiah-Lincoln CC where she averaged 12.5 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. The athletic wing scored a season-high 25 points against Pearl River CC. She brings a good mix of slashing to the goal and outside shooting.

The Lady Choctaws also bring in three transfer post players in Khadijah Jones, Deizarae McCoy and Kourtney Steele. Jones has a good size advantage inside and good touch around the basket. McCoy is a relentless rebounder that plays suffocating defense. Steele has a good outside jumper and uses her size well to rebound and score in the paint.

SCHEDULE The Lady Choctaws open the 2014-15 season with non-conference home games against Spring Hill and Selma before hosting the FCA & Zaxby’s Tip-Off Classic in A.E. Wood Coliseum. They will face Lane and Selma in the tournament and open conference play with two more home games against West Alabama and West Georgia. The Lady Choctaws will then hit the road for the first time in the league, traveling to face Union and Christian Brothers in West Tennessee. MC will close out the 2014 portion of the schedule at home against West Florida and Valdosta State. After opening up 2015 with road games against Alabama Huntsville and North Alabama, the Lady Choctaws will return home to play three straight against Shorter, Lee and rival Delta State (January 17). Following the game against DSU, the conference opponents will each show up on the schedule one more time. The Lady Choctaws close out the 201415 season on February 26th when they travel to Cleveland to face the Lady Statesmen. MC will be eligible for the National Christian College Athletic Association MidEast Region Tournament, which begins the first week in March.

Sampson is a transfer from Meridian CC where she scored 19.3 points per game, including scoring in double-figures in 24 of 25 contests. She scored a season-high 32 points and was a 55% field goal shooter with the Lady Eagles. The tandem of Minor and Sampson should open up opportunities down low for the post players.

POSTS

LAUREN BETHLY 8

The Lady Choctaws do not return a single post player and will have to deal with the losses of their two leading scorers from a season ago in Cara Beverin and Dominique Walker. The two combined to average nearly 30 points and 16 rebounds per game last season and averaged 55 minutes played per game. Both were All-ASC selections and leave a hole that will be difficult to fill.

Paul Allen

DUKE

HEAD COACH

Paul Allen Duke is heading into his 20th season as head coach of the Mississippi College Lady Choctaws. In 19 seasons, Duke has an impressive 331-152 (.685) record, an average of more than 17 wins a season. The Lady Choctaws went through their last season in Division III and the American Southwest Conference as Coach Duke was a part of all 18 seasons in the league. Seniors Cara Beverin, Alexus Stirgus and Dominique Walker all earned All-ASC honors on the year. The 2012-13 season was one that saw injuries really take a toll on Duke and the Lady Choctaws. Three season-ending injuries kept MC out of the ASC Tournament, snapping a streak of 10 consecutive years in the postseason. Seniors Traci Rodgers, Valeri Stewart and Ebony Williams were All-ASC selections following the season. In the 2011-12 season, the Lady Choctaws made their 10th consecutive American Southwest Conference Tournament and 13th appearance in 14 tries. MC won 10 of their final 14 games to close the season with a 16-10 overall record, and Duke won his 300th career game. Elizabeth Brooks, Caitlin Brown, Ebony Williams, and Madelyn Cross each earned All-ASC honors. The 2010-11 season saw Paul Allen lead the Lady Choctaws to their ninth consecutive ASC Tournament. The Lady Choctaws finished the season 17-9 overall and 12-8 in the ASC, which landed them the #3 seed in the ASC East. MC led the conference in field goal percentage (.480) and finished second in scoring (71.6 ppg) and three-point field goal percentage (.350). Jalessa Taylor, Randa Lee, and Jennifer Wair each earned All-ASC honors with Taylor being named First Team All-ASC and Wair earning East Division Defensive Player of the Year honors. In 2009-10, Duke saw the Lady Choctaws qualify for the ASC Tournament and break the record for three-point attempts in a season with 368, with the previous record being 314. The Lady Choctaws went 10-1 at the “Golden Dome” and had four players named to All-ASC Teams, led by Jalessa Taylor with a First Team All-East Division selection. Jennifer Wair was named the ASC East Division Newcomer of the Year. The 2008-09 season was arguably the most successful in Coach Duke’s career as the Lady Choctaws finished 22-5 and went to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. Coach Duke’s team finished first in the nation in field goal percentage (47.1) and three point field goal percentage (40.1). Rosemary Green was named to the All-ASC First Team, while Green and Anesia McBride were East Division First Team selections. Brittany Dukes, Casie Hilton and Anna Patterson also earned All-ASC honors. In the 2007-08 season, Coach Duke led a team to the #2 seed in the ASC East after a 2-6 start to the year. For his efforts, Duke was named Tri-Coach of the Year as his team finished 15-11 with a trip to the ASC Tournament.

12

In the 2006-07 season, Duke became the all-time winningest coach in Mississippi College history with a 56-41 win over Louisiana College on January 16th in Pineville. The Lady Choctaws made an appearance in the conference tournament. In 2005-06, Duke led the Lady Choctaws to a 19-7 season and their third American Southwest Conference East Division title in four seasons. The Lady Choctaws also made their ninth appearance in the ASC Championship Tournament in ten seasons. In 2004-05, Duke led the Lady Choctaws to a 17-9 record and another appearance in the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament. The 2003-04 season saw the Lady Choctaws finish with an overall record of 22-4 and an American Southwest Conference Eastern Division title for the third time in four years. Duke coached his third ASC Player of the Year in Lacey Palomarez. Former players Chastidy Sandifer and Latoya Hopson also were recipient’s of the award under Duke’s leadership. Six players were selected to the conference All-Academic team, as well. In 2002-03, Duke led the Lady Choctaws to a 22-4 season, an ASC East Division title and appearance in the ASC Tournament. Lacey Palomarez was the league’s choice as the ASC Freshman of the Year under Duke’s guidance. During the 2001 season, Duke led the Lady Choctaws to a 20-5 season and a 15-3 record in ASC divisional play. The twenty-win season was the second for Duke at Mississippi College and the first since 1998. The Lady Choctaws won the ASC East Division and narrowly missed qualifying for the NCAA tournament. That team had four different players selected to the ASC All-Conference team. Under the direction of Duke, the Lady Choctaws claimed a share of the 1997-98 American Southwest Championship and finished with a 21-4 record. The Lady Choctaws began the 1998-99 season with a

winning streak of 12 games and continued the streak through an impressive 27 games, the longest winning streak in the Lady Choctaw basketball history. That squad finished with a record of 18-7. Duke has been named the American Southwest Conference East Division Coach of the Year in five seasons. Coach Duke has made a habit of coaching players who finish the season receiving post-season honors. Before entering the NCAA Division III ranks, Duke had much success in the Gulf South Conference and at the NCAA Division II level. Duke had two players to make the All Gulf South Conference Team and one to make the All-South Regional Second Team. Prior to becoming head coach, Duke served the university as the assistant women’s basketball coach for seven seasons. As assistant coach, Duke was part of the Lady Choctaws team that finished in the finals of the Gulf South Conference Championship Tournament. He also served as a graduate assistant under Mike Jones for one year. Before arriving at Mississippi College, Duke coached at Woodland Hills in Jackson (1986-1987), at St. Andrews Episcopal School in Jackson (1980-1985), and at Sylva Bay High School before that where he served as the athletic director, head football coach, and head coach for the men’s and women’s basketball teams. Duke has worked basketball camps all across the country. He has worked at North Carolina University (Dean Smith), Mississippi State University (Bob Boyd), Villanova University (Rollie Massimino), and Mississippi College (Mike Jones). Duke attended Mississippi State University, where he played for one year, and completed his bachelor of science degree in 1976. He received a master of education degree at Mississippi College in 1987. Paul Allen is married to the former Cathy Lovvorn.

2013-14 SEASON REVIEW The Mississippi College women’s basketball team played their final season in the American Southwest Conference in 2013-14, finishing with an 1114 record and a 9-13 mark in league play. They wrapped up their time in the conference with four East Divsion championships and 14 trips to the postseason tournament, including a spot in the 2008-09 NCAA Division III Tournament.

and went 6-of-10 from the three-point line. They would also defeat ASCleading Howard Payne at home, finishing the season with an 8-6 mark in the “Golden Dome.” MC would proceed to lose their next four games and struggled to get over .500 the rest of the season. However, in the final game of the season, they hosted rival, Louisiana College, and walked away with an 84-73 victory to finish up their run in the conference. The seniors (Beverin, Stirgus and Walker) combined for 57 points and 35 rebounds, shooting 65% from the floor.

Head coach Paul Allen Duke had three seniors on the squad and all three earned All-American Southwest Conference honors. Alexus Stirgus was a Second Team selection, averaging 12.2 points per game and leading the way with 80 assists. Dominique Walker played just one season in the “Blue and Gold” but was named the league’s Newcomer of the Year and an Honorable Mention honoree. Cara Beverin also earned an Honorable Meniton, averaging 14.3 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. The Lady Choctaws opened the year with a 6-5 record, including a 12077 victory over Sul Ross State that saw MC score more points in a single game since the 1994-95 season. In the game, they shot 64% from the floor

GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE Academic excellence and a leadership role in the NCAA’s Division II make the Gulf South Conference (GSC) something special. The GSC is a charter member of Division II and enters its 44th year as one of the premier conferences at any NCAA level. In the summer of 1970, six college presidents met to discuss about athletics; when the meeting ended, a new league emerged—the Mid-South Conference—started by, and to this day run by, the CEOs, the first in NCAA history. It is that CEO-control and involvement that makes the league work and its 14 championships (football; men’s & women’s cross country, men’s & women’s soccer; volleyball, men’s & women’s basketball, men’s & women’s tennis, men’s & women’s golf, softball and baseball) so intensely contested--in a collegial manner, of course. From that point forward, the GSC has been giant steps ahead of the D-II pack. Beginning in 1997, the league found neutral sites paying sizeable guarantees for most of its team championships. NCAA Conventions regularly feature GSC-proposed or -inspired legislation. No one wins more regionals or earns more NCAA post-season bids. In 2004, the league purchased its own built-to-its-specification office space. But the crowning moment came in 2005-06, when the GSC debuted its highly successful “GSC-TV Live” package which included nine football games (now 11) and its men’s & women’s basketball tournament finals. Add to that the branded “GSC DigiNet” video platform and the live-streaming of most of its championships, and you can see why the GSC is a Conference paving the way in the 21st century! We take pride in our 48 National Team Championships in 13 sports and more than 100 regional titles, especially because there is no sacrifice on the academic side, where GSC student-athletes regularly earn Academic All-America. The GSC opened the 2012-13 year with NCAA Championships, thanks to West Florida’s first-ever NCAA Women’s Soccer Title and Valdosta State’s third all-time Football Crown. Delta State, Florence State (now North Alabama), Jacksonville State, Livingston (now West Alabama), Tennessee-Martin and Troy State were the charter members. Scheduling problems for the 1970-71 academic year limited the GSC to football, won by Jacksonville State. In 1971, the addition

of Southeast Louisiana (SELA) and Nichols State increased the membership to eight. The league opened an office in Hammond, LA, changed its name to the Gulf South Conference and began championships in nine men’s sports. Mississippi College and Northwestern Louisiana (NWLA, now Northwestern State) joined in 1972 and two years later, NELA left for Division I, followed by SELA and Nicholls State in 1979. The conference continued with seven teams until 1981, when the CEOs admitted Valdosta State and West Georgia (1983). In 1991, TennesseeMartin and Troy State went Division I, briefly dropping the GSC back to seven members. An aggressive expansion under the guidance of new Commissioner Nate Salant resulted in 10 new members: Lincoln Memorial (1992-93); Alabama Huntsville, Henderson State, Central Arkansas and Mississippi University for Women (1993-94); West Florida (1994-95); and Arkansas-Monticello, Arkansas Tech, Montevallo and Southern Arkansas (1995-96). Jacksonville State moved to Division I at the end of 1992-93. Mississippi College dropped to Division III at the end of 1995-96, and was replaced by Christian Brothers to keep the Conference at 16 schools. In July 2000, the GSC welcomed Harding University and Ouachita Baptist University, making it the largest NCAA-playing conference at any level with 18 schools. MUW dropped its athletics program at the end of the 2002-03 season, decreasing the membership to 17. Central Arkansas reclassified to Division I and Lincoln Memorial moved to the South Atlantic Conference following the 2006-07 year. Montevallo’s departure for the Peach Belt Conference dropped the number to 14. The GSC moved away from divisional play after the 2010-11 season after its six Arkansas members broke away, dropping the membership to eight. Thanks to an aggressive expansion plan, the GSC sponsored the Division II applications of Union University (TN) and Shorter University (GA), which were accepted into the NCAA process in July 2011, and are expected to become official members for 2014-15. The next step in bolstering its membership came in 2012, backing the Division II application of Lee University (TN) which was accepted by the NCAA in July of 2012. The league added its first-ever associate member, Florida Tech, in football only in 2013. The Conference added an old friend back into the fold when Mississippi College’s application to rejoin Division II was approved in September of 2013.
