Christmas with Chor Leoni : Angels Dance
W
elcome to this year’s Christmas with Choir Leoni, and for those of you joining us for our Saturday show at the Orpheum, our Angels Dance collaboration with the PREP dancers from Arts Umbrella. The holidays are about getting together, so in that spirit, I wanted to bring the world of contemporary ballet to the musical world of our seasonal offerings. My hope is that these old carols and folk songs will be made new through these incredible arrangements and extraordinary dance. Bringing our Christmas program to the Orpheum is no small undertaking. I am so glad we can utilize this iconic Vancouver space with a program which will truly fill the stage. Thank you for your loyalty to this choir and following us here. This holiday season, everyone at Chor Leoni wishes you joy and peace. I hope that the music of Angels Dance can be a gift of both, for this year and into the next.

Texts & Translations
Ave Maria The angel of God visited Mary and she conceived of the Holy Spirit. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. Mary said: Behold, the servant of the Lord. may it happen to me according to your word. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. And the Word became flesh and lived among us. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, Holy Mary, pray for us now and in the hour of our death. Amen.
Carols and Lullabies I. ¡Oh, mi Belén! Oh, my Bethlehem! Your hour has come, beloved, oh, my Bethlehem! Your light shines without ceasing, it is like a beacon that guides us on our way, night and day. II. El Desembre Congelat The frozen December retreats. The whole world admires April, crowned by flowers. When in a garden of love, a divine flower is born from a beautiful rose, fruitful and fragrant. Our first Father brought on the night which shrouded the world in darkness. But at midnight, the risen sun shines

announcing a beautiful dawn, delighting the sky. The month of May has blossomed, not yet in full flower, a white and polished lily, of such rare fragrance, that from East to West, all the world can breathe in its sweetness and scent with blessedness. III. Alegría Towards Bethlehem they walk, Mary with her loving husband, traveling in the company of an almighty God. Refrain: Joy and pleasure! For the virgin passes by, with her husband, towards Bethlehem. When they arrived in Bethlehem, they searched for an inn, but no one would accommodate them, because they were so poor. Refrain The birds of the forest, seeing Mary and Joseph, sang songs with their harmonious trills. Refrain IV. A la Nanita Nana My Jesus is sleepy, blessed be He. Fountain that runs clear and sonorous, Nightingale in the forest, singing sadlyHush, while the cradle rocks. VII. En Belén Tocan A Fuego In Bethlehem a fire begins, from the manger come the flames; for they say he was born, the Redeemer of souls. Refrain: Fish in the river jump and dance, they jump and dance to witness God’s birth. Fish in the water jump and dance, they jump and dance to witness the dawn’s birth. In Bethlehem’s stable, 8

a carnation was born, the incarnate, that by redeeming the world, has turned into a purple lily. Refrain The Virgin washes clothes, and hangs them on the rosemary bush. The birds sang, and the water flowed rejoicing. Refrain X. El Rorro Refrain: A la rurru, little child, go to sleep now, my tiny Jesus. From the elephant to the mosquito, keep quiet, do not make noise. Refrain Divine night, night of joy, Blessed be sweet, divine Mary. Refrain Celestial choirs with your sweet voices, sing the blessing of this birth.
Maybe This Christmas Maybe this Christmas will mean something more. Maybe this year Love will appear Deeper than ever before. And maybe forgiveness will ask us to call Someone we’ve loved, Someone we’ve lost For reasons we can’t quite recall. Maybe this Christmas. Maybe they’ll be an open door, Maybe the star that shone before Will shine once more. And maybe this Christmas will find us at last In heavenly peace, Grieve for the least, For the love we’ve been shown in the past, oh Maybe this Christmas. 9

ABOUT Chor Leoni Described as “one of the best male choirs on the continent” by Oregon Artswatch, Chor Leoni is one of the most active amateur ensembles in North America and performs more than 35 concerts a season to over 15,000 patrons. With stylistic grace and an adventurous spirit, Vancouver’s Singing Lions have enriched and transformed people’s lives through singing for over twenty-five years. The choir is fortunate and privileged to sing on the unceded traditional territory of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations. In 2019 the ensemble received the Margaret Hillis Award for Choral Excellence from the professional choral organization, Chorus America. The award recognizes artistic excellence, contribution to the choral art form, and organizational stability over a long period of time and may only be given once in an ensemble’s lifetime. The ensemble has been honoured with many awards at the national and international level including five first place awards in the CBC National Radio Competition for Amateur Choirs. Chor Leoni’s recordings are regularly featured on CBC, Minnesota Public Radio, KING-FM in Seattle and WFMT Chicago. The choir’s Wandering Heart recording received a perfect five-star rating from the UK’s prestigious Choir and Organ magazine.
About Performance Research Project at Arts Umbrella The Performance Research Project is a post-graduate Arts Umbrella program for emerging professional dancers. The Performance Research Project, led by Lesley Telford, functions in parallel with an emerging artist’s professional path, providing opportunities for dancers to participate in projects and performances. This year the dancers are working with Ballet BC, Chor Leoni, Bard on the Beach and other local organizations. Conceived as a stepping stone into a career in dance, this program focuses on the development of an intensive artistic practice through workshops along with daily training. Delving into the choreographic process, dancers research and develop new work and investigate existing repertoire. In past years, the dancers have created new work with local choreographers such as Serge Bennathan, Vanessa Goodman, Noam Gagnon, David Raymond, Heather Myers and Lesley Telford.
Erick Lichte Enjoying a diverse career as a conductor and composer, Erick Lichte has been hailed by Washington Post for the “audacity” of his programming and noted by the Chicago Tribune for the “meticulous preparation” of his choirs. The New York Times recently called his direction and composing “thrilling” and said of his work that the “sensation is tremendous and the musical chill effect engulfing.” As a founding member, singer, and Artistic Director of the male vocal ensemble Cantus, Lichte created and sustained one of only two full-time vocal ensembles in the United States. From 20002009, his programming and artistic direction were heard in over 60 concerts a year and Lichte has collaborated with artists such as Bobby McFerrin, the Boston Pops, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Doc Severinsen, and the Minnesota Orchestra. In January 2013 he began his tenure as Artistic Director of Chor Leoni and has grown the choir into one of the continent’s most active and popular amateur choirs. His first recording with Chor Leoni, Wandering Heart, received a perfect five-star review from the UK’s prestigious Choir and Organ Magazine, and Oregon Arts Watch has declared that, under his 10
chor leoni men’s choir
leadership, Chor Leoni is now “one of the best male choirs on the continent.” In the summer of 2018, he led Chor Leoni to multiple awards and Grand Prix appearances at both the Singapore and Bali International Choral Competitions. His work with Cantus and Chor Leoni garnered him both the 2009 and 2019 Margaret Hillis Award for Choral Excellence, the highest honour from the professional choral organization Chorus America. An active proponent of new music, Lichte has commissioned over 250 new works from composers such as Lee Hoiby, riks Ešenvalds, Gavin Bryars, Jocelyn Morlock, Edie Hill, Mary Ellen Childs, Zachary Wadsworth and more. He is an active composer and arranger, especially known for co-creating All is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914 which has toured North America annually and been performed on three continents. The work’s off-Broadway run in Greenwich Village garnered Lichte a Drama Desk Award for both his composing and his musical direction.
