W

elcome to Chor Leoni’s 28th annual Remembrance Day Concert and the choir’s 2019-20 season. We are honoured to mark this day in song and glad that you are here to share in our choir’s prayer for peace.

There are only a few unqualified masterpieces of the male choir repertoire and today we will present two of them. Samuel Barber’s A Stopwatch and an Ordnance Map and Veljo Tormis’ Varjele, Jumala, Soasta are not only some of the most original and challenging works of voices, but they each are powerful responses to the horror and pain of war. We present these masterworks alongside numerous new works, written for Chor Leoni in the past few years — Bob Chilcott’s 5 Ways to Kill a Man, riks Ešenvalds’ Long Road and a new choral setting of Kurt Weill’s Dirge for Two Veterans by B.C.’s own Nicholas Ryan Kelly. Today, we will also sing two works by our Composer-In-Residence Zachary Wadsworth, including a new setting of Francis Ledwidge’s poem “To One Dead” as well as an excerpt from Zach’s oratorio When There is Peace which is being released today in a new recording of last year’s premiere. In just a month we will return to the Orpheum for an exciting holiday collaboration with Arts Umbrella Dance Company as they dance to the musical merriment of Chor Leoni. It is sure to be one of the great performances of the season and we hope you can join us.

Texts & Translations

5 Ways to Kill a Man Music: Bob Chilcott Text: Edwin Brock There are many cumbersome ways to kill a man. You can make him carry a plank of wood to the top of a hill and nail him to it. To do this properly you require a crowd of people wearing sandals, a cock that crows, a cloak to dissect, a sponge, some vinegar and one man to hammer the nails home. Or you can take a length of steel, shaped and chased in a traditional way, and attempt to pierce the metal cage he wears. But for this you need white horses, English trees, men with bows and arrows, at least two flags, a prince, and a castle to hold your banquet in. Dispensing with nobility, you may, if the wind allows, blow gas at him. But then you need a mile of mud sliced through with ditches, not to mention black boots, bomb craters, more mud, a plague of rats, a dozen songs and some round hats made of steel. In an age of aeroplanes, you may fly miles above your victim and dispose of him by pressing one small switch. All you then require is an ocean to separate you, two systems of government, a nation’s scientists, several factories, a psychopath, and land that no one needs for several years. These are, as I began, cumbersome ways to kill a man. Simpler, direct, and much more neat is to see that he is living somewhere in the middle of the twentieth century, and leave him there.

The Turtle Dove Music: Ralph Vaughan-Williams Text: English traditional Fare you well, my dear, I must be gone, And leave you for awhile; If I roam away I’ll come back again, Though I roam ten thousand miles, my dear, Though I roam ten thousand miles. As fair thou art my bonny lass, So deep in love am I; But I never will prove false to the pretty girl I love, Till the stars fall from the sky, my dear, Till the stars fall from the sky. The sea will never run dry, my dear, Nor the rocks never melt with the sun, But I never will prove false to the pretty girl I love, Till all those things be done, my dear, Till all those things be done. O yonder doth sit that little turtle dove, He doth sit on yonder high tree, A-making a moan for the loss of his love, As I will do for thee, my dear, As I will do for thee.

Boots Music: Don Macdonald Text: Rudyard Kipling We’re foot—slog—slog—slog—sloggin’ over Africa! Foot—foot—foot—foot—sloggin’ over Africa— (Boots—boots—boots—boots—movin’ up and down again!) There’s no discharge in the war! Seven—six—eleven—five—nine-an’-twenty mile to-day— Four—eleven—seventeen—thirty-two the day before— (Boots—boots—boots—boots—movin’ up and down again!) Men—men—men—men—men go mad with watchin’ ’em, And there’s no discharge in the war!

Varjele, Jumala, Soasta Music: Veljo Tormis Text: Kanteletar II: 323, 326 Varjele, vakainen Luoja, kaitse, kaunoinen Jumala

Protect us, steadfast Creator, protect, beautiful God.

kavioista vainovarsain, sorkista sotahevosten, rauan valkian varasta, terän tuiman tutkaimesta, tykin suuren suun e’estä, rautakirnujen kiasta, suurilta sotakeoilta, uron tappotanterilta, varjele vahingon teiltä, kaitse kaikista pahoista!

From the hooves of enemy foals, from the cloven hooves of war horses, from the fire of the iron, from the harsh point of the blade, from the front of the large mouth of the cannon, from the mouth of churning iron, from the large war fields, from the killing fields of the hero, protect us from the roads of harm, protect us from all evils!

A Stopwatch and an Ordnance Map Music: Samuel Barber Text: Stephen Spender A stopwatch and an ordnance map. At five a man fell to the ground And the watch flew off his wrist Like a moon struck from the earth Marking a blank time that stares On the tides of change beneath. All under the olive trees. A stopwatch and an ordnance map. He stayed faithfully in that place From his living comrade split By dividers of the bullet That opened wide the distances Of his final loneliness. All under the olive trees. A stopwatch and an ordnance map. And the bones are fixed at five Under the moon’s timelessness; But another who lives on Wears within his heart forever The space split open by the bullet. All under the olive trees.

Dirge for Two Veterans Music: Kurt Weill, arr. Nicholas Ryan Kelly Text: Walt Whitman The last sunbeam Lightly falls from the finish’d Sabbath, On the pavement here, and there beyond it is looking, Down a new-made double grave. Lo, the moon ascending, Up from the east the silvery round moon, Beautiful over the house-tops, ghastly, phantom moon, Immense and silent moon. I see a sad procession And I hear the sound of coming full-key’d bugles, All the channels of the city streets they’re flooding, As with voices and with tears. 9

chor leoni’s Protect Us from war

I hear the great drums pounding, And the small drums steady whirring, And every blow of the great convulsive drums, Strikes me through and through. For the son is brought with the father, (In the foremost ranks of the fierce assault they fell, Two veterans son and father drop’t together, And the double grave awaits them.) Now nearer blow the bugles, And the drums strike more convulsive, And the daylight o’er the pavement quite has faded, And the strong dead-march enwraps me. O strong dead-march you please me! O moon immense with your silvery face you soothe me! O my soldiers twain! O my veterans passing to burial! What I have I also give you. The moon gives you light, And the bugles and the drums give you music, And my heart, O my soldiers, my veterans, My heart gives you love.

To One Dead Music: Zachary Wadsworth Text: Francis Ledwidge A blackbird singing On a moss-upholstered stone, Bluebells swinging, Shadows wildly blown, A song in the wood, A ship on the sea. The song was for you and the ship was for me. A blackbird singing I hear in my troubled mind, Bluebells swinging, I see in a distant wind. But sorrow and silence, Are the wood’s threnody, The silence for you and the sorrow for me.

Long Road Music: riks Ešenvalds Poetry: Pauline Bärda, Translation by Elaine Singley Lloyd I love, I love you night and day as a star in the distant sky. And I mourn for this one thing alone that to love, Our lifetime was so short, so short. A long road to heaven’s shining meadow, and never could I reach its end. But a longer road leads to your heart, which to me seems distant as a star. High above the arch of heaven bends and light so clear is falling. Like a flowr’ing tree the world is blooming. Overwhelmed, my heartt both cries and laughs. Oh, like a flow’ring tree the world is blooming. Overwhelmed, my heart both cries and laughs, and laughs. A long road to heaven’s shining meadow, and never could I reach its end. But a longer road leads to your heart, a longer road leads to your heart, my love! . . . which to me seems distant as a star. A long road.

In Flanders Fields Music: Zachary Wadsworth Text: Moina Michael Oh! you who sleep in Flanders Fields, Sleep sweet – to rise anew! We caught the torch you threw And holding high, we keep the Faith With All who died. And now the Torch and Poppy Red We wear in honor of our dead. Fear not that ye have died for naught; We’ll teach the lesson that ye wrought In Flanders Fields.

Erick Lichte Enjoying a diverse career as a conductor and composer, Erick Lichte has been hailed by Washington Post for the “audacity” of his programming and noted by the Chicago Tribune for the “meticulous preparation” of his choirs. The New York Times recently called his direction and composing “thrilling” and said of his work that the “sensation is tremendous and the musical chill effect engulfing.” As a founding member, singer, and Artistic Director of the male vocal ensemble Cantus, Lichte created and sustained one of only two full-time vocal ensembles in the United States. From 20002009, his programming and artistic direction were heard in over 60 concerts a year and Lichte has collaborated with artists such as Bobby McFerrin, the Boston Pops, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Doc Severinsen, and the Minnesota Orchestra. In January 2013 he began his tenure as Artistic Director of Chor Leoni and has grown the choir into one of the continent’s most active and popular amateur choirs. His first recording with Chor Leoni, Wandering Heart, received a perfect five-star review from the UK’s prestigious Choir and Organ Magazine, and Oregon Arts Watch has declared that, under his leadership, Chor Leoni is now “one of the best male choirs on the continent.” In the summer of 2018, he led Chor Leoni to multiple awards and Grand Prix appearances at both the Singapore and Bali International Choral Competitions. His work with Cantus and Chor Leoni garnered him both the 2009 and 2019 Margaret Hillis Award for Choral Excellence, the highest honour from the professional choral organization Chorus America. An active proponent of new music, Lichte has commissioned over 250 new works from composers such as Lee Hoiby, riks Ešenvalds, Gavin Bryars, Jocelyn Morlock, Edie Hill, Mary Ellen Childs, Zachary Wadsworth and more. He is an active composer and arranger, especially known for co-creating All is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914 which has toured North America annually and been performed on three continents. The work’s off-Broadway run in Greenwich Village garnered Lichte a Drama Desk Award for both his composing and his musical direction.

TINA CHANG Vancouver pianist and coach Tina Chang is currently on the music staff at Vancouver Opera as répétiteur and coach, and was most recently assistant conductor with the company’s production of Nico Muhly’s Dark Sisters. Past engagements include music directorship with Fear No Opera in Victoria, and as pianist and coach with the Atelier lyrique at the Opéra de Montréal. Tina regularly tours with mezzo-soprano, Barb Towell, performing traditional to contemporary song repertoire and melding it with theatre. She has toured with the group QuintEssence (vocal-piano quintet) to bring Classical music to communities throughout British Columbia. Tina is on the music staff at Wexford Opera Festival in Ireland where she most recently assisted with Jacopo Foroni’s opera Margherita, last heard in 1852, as well as music directed Rossini’s La Scala di seta. She is also on staff at the soundSCAPE New Music Festival in Cesena, Italy, a musical exchange program between composers and performers.
