It ain’t over yet!

F

or 25 years, Chor Leoni’s shows at Bard on the Beach have meant the end of our singing season and the beginning of summer. But this year, these performances are but a send off for the choir as we travel to Asia to represent Canada at the Singapore and Bali International Choral Festivals and competitions. We are thrilled to be able to bring our artistry to a continent unfamiliar with Chor Leoni and to meet many singers from throughout the world — folks from different walks of life who share our passion for the transformative power of singing. We are also delighted to represent Canada and Vancouver abroad. I know that the men of Chor Leoni are some of the best ambassadors anyone could wish for. We will do our best to make you proud! We also look forward to new beginnings next season. As we say goodbye to our shows at Bard on the Beach we look forward to offering our first PopCapella program at the Playhouse in March, in collaboration with bassist and bandleader Jodi Proznick. We will continue our tradition of shaking out our manes at our new event Lions Share, at the Queen Elizabeth Lobby next June. Of course VanMan, C/4, and our holiday shows return next year and we are thrilled to mark the 100th anniversary of the World War One Armistice with a newly commissioned oratorio. When There is Peace features a libretto crafted by the creative team of All is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914 and the music of Canadian-American composer Zachary Wadsworth. It is going to be a great year! Happy summer and we can’t wait to share pictures and stories of our adventures across the globe!

TRANSLATIONS

Trinque L’amourette On my way home from the bakery (here’s to love and let’s dance) On my way I encountered Her cute little Louis, his pretty silhouette, her gluttonous husband. (here’s to love and let’s dance) Three well mounted horsemen, Two are on horseback and the other on foot. The one on foot asked me Where will we be sleeping tonight? In the house as per usual. You lied honest cavalier! We’ll be sleeping in the hen house, The roosters and the chickens will sh*t on you.

O Yo Yo I went into a church Where nothing was there. I saw further on A little monk in a corner Who was giving confession to three women. With a glass in his hand, Starting with the youngest, Because she stayed the furthest away. And he says to the other two, Come back tomorrow, Tomorrow at the same time Or a little earlier in the morning, We’ll go and gather hazelnuts And drink some wine.

Ariana is thrilled to have been choreographing for Chor Leoni since Bard Boyz in 2011. She is also one fifth of the indie band, The Argyle Embargo, alongside several Chor Leoni members and alumni. Rob McAllister, Costumier Rob has no qualifications for his role, except for sewing a floorlength chocolate-brown satin dressing gown in Grade 5, causing his mother to “wonder” for the first time. He thanks the men for allowing him to put them in outfits that were elegant, ridiculous, classy, tight, short, hot, scratchy, goofy, sexy, colourful, drab and everything in between; James for putting up with an apartment littered with sequins, feathers, fun fur, glue, and pins for so many years; and lastly Diane for trusting him.

ERICK LICHTE Erick Lichte has been hailed by Washington Post for the “audacity” of his programming, and noted by the Chicago Tribune for the “meticulous preparation” of his choirs. Fanfare Magazine declared that he created and helmed “the premier men’s vocal ensemble in the United States.” As a founding member, singer and Artistic Director of the male vocal ensemble Cantus, Lichte created and sustained one of only two full-time vocal ensembles in the United States. From 2000-2009, Lichte’s programming and artistic direction were heard in over 60 concerts a year and he has collaborated with artists such as Bobby McFerrin, the Boston Pops, The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Doc Severinsen, and Minnesota Orchestra. His work with Cantus garnered the 2009 Margaret Hillis Award for Choral Excellence, the highest honour from the professional choral organization Chorus America. In January of 2013 he began his tenure as Artistic Director of Vancouver BC’s Chor Leoni Men’s Choir. Lichte is an active proponent of new music and has commissioned over 250 new works from composers such as Lee Hoiby, riks Ešenvalds, Gavin Bryars, Jocelyn Morlock, Steven Sametz, Edie Hill, Mary Ellen Childs, and Imant Raminsh, among many others. An active clinician and guest conductor, Lichte is especially passionate in his work to get young men singing and believes in the transformative social power choral music can have on male culture. He is also an active composer and arranger, especially known for co-creating All is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914 which has been taken on ten North American tours and been performed on three continents. In November 2018, All is Calm will make its off Broadway debut for a two month run at the Sheen Center in Greenwich Village.

ABOUT CHOR LEONI Praised for its excellent intonation and wide palette of vocal colour, CHOR LEONI MEN’S CHOIR is one of the most active amateur ensembles in North America and performs more than 35 concerts a season to over 15,000 patrons. With stylistic grace and an adventurous spirit, Vancouver’s Singing Lions have enriched and transformed people’s lives through singing for over twenty-five years. The ensemble has been honoured with many awards at the national and international level including five 1st place awards in the CBC National Radio Competition for Amateur Choirs. In 2012, Chor Leoni won a dozen awards at the 51st Concorso Internazionale di Canto Corale “Seghizzi” (Italy), including 1st place trophies in the 19th and 20th Century categories, two Audience Favourite awards, and second place in the competition’s overall Grand Prix. Chor Leoni’s recent Wandering Heart recording received a perfect, five-star rating from the UK’s prestigious Choir and Organ magazine, and has been a featured CD for Minnesota Public Radio and WFMT Chicago.
