APRIL SALE RESULTS

Collections from The Laskett: The Property of Sir Roy Strong Tuesday 27 April 2021

Modern Art & Design Wednesday 28 April 2021

Three months of planning and six months of waiting resulted in a remarkably successful Laskett House contents auction. The initial promotion of the sale began in the autumn but finally in April Chorley’s were thrilled to open the doors for the first time since October. Three view days brought in over 400 visitors, socially distanced, but excited by the opportunity to view the fascinating collections of Sir Roy Strong. The popularity of Sir Roy, such a well-known character in the art world, was obvious from the number of enquiries and the sale attracted more than 2,000 registrants across the firm’s two bidding platforms. Sale highlights: David Hockney, Portrait Study of Sir Roy Strong 1969 pencil sketch - £19,000 Early 17th Century English School, Portrait of Anne Shirley 1603 oil on panel - £6,500 Cecil Beaton, Portrait Study of Lady Diana Cooper pencil sketch - £6,000 Laura Knight, Tamara Karsavina in ‘The Firebird’, watercolour sketch - £3,800

The demand for 20th Century art and design continues to grow, and Chorley’s bi-annual auction on 28th April smashed through its presale expectations. After this past year of being cooped up at home, many are dreaming of beaches and the sea, so there was no surprise a stunning view of St Ives by Bryan Pearce was hotly contested to £9,000. Studio ceramics also performed well, most notably a collection of pieces by John Maltby, who sadly died last year. Always popular for his colourful designs and quirky shapes, the Maltby group performed well with a typically colourful slab vase reaching a staggering £1000 despite a little damage. A near full size bronze figure of a girl just waking from stretched slumber was one of just eight examples of a sculpture produced in 1981 by Ralph Brown RA. Exquisitely modelled, she found a new home at £6,000. Entries are now being accepted for our next sale of Modern Art & Design in October. Contact: catrin.hampton@chorleys.com
