SALEROOM NEWS MARCH 2020

Lot 404

Tuesday 17 & Wednesday 18 March PRIVATE COLLECTIONS SALE Following the excitement of our January sale of items from Spetchley Park, Chorley’s March auction provides another fascinating glimpse into the lives of the inhabitants of some of Britain’s great estates. The auction will feature printed maps, porcelain and paintings collected over centuries by families living in some of Britain’s most historic houses including Ombersley Court, Priors Court Forthampton and Spetchley Park. These are complemented by a wonderful array of antique boxes and tea caddies and 18th Century porcelain consigned to us by a private Cotswold collector.

Lot 400

The private Cotswold collection offers a good selection of English and European porcelain, including Worcester, Derby, Sevres and Meissen. Ranging from delicate botanical plates painted in pastel shades, such as a Derby sweet-pea plate Lot 379, £120-180, to showstoppers like a gold and green Worcester (Flight, Barr & Barr) vase on stand, Lot 346, £1,500-2,000, the collection has been carefully curated over many years and now makes a spectacular display in our saleroom.

From Ombersley Court, a pair of Worcester mask head jugs, circa 1785, are estimated at £800-1,200, Lot 404. Ceramics from the Priors Court Forthampton collection include two Worcester circular baskets with an estimated value of £400-600, Lot 400. From Spetchley Park comes a First Period Worcester double tea service, circa 1770, estimated to achieve £500-700, Lot 423.

Among a group of paintings that graced the walls of Priors Court Forthampton, Lot 1122, a characterful portrait of Oliver Cromwell after Sir Peter Lely is set to achieve £1,500-2,000. By coincidence, this auction also includes a terracotta bust of Charles I, Cromwell’s opponent during the English Civil War, Lot 554, £300-500. Another charming portrait, by Sigismund Christian Hubert Goetze, depicts a young boy, Guyon Philipson Philipson-Stow, who once lived at Priors Court. He stands by the doorway carrying a basket of blue and white Canterbury bells and wearing a white dress decorated with pale blue smocking. It is not hard to see why this painting was known affectionately by the family as “Grandpa as a girl”! The portrait is estimated to realise £2,000-3,000, Lot 1125.

Charity of the Year 2020 | Stroud Court Community Trust We are pleased to announce that this year we will be fund-raising for a charity located just down the road from our saleroom. It was very close to the heart of our much-missed former colleague, Simon Bruton, and our selection this year is made in memory of him. Stroud Court Community Trust is a specialist residential charity, founded in 1983 by a group of parents of autistic young adults. Their original aim was to secure a life time of understanding and respect for their autistic family members and these principles remain firm today. On a seventeen-acre site near Minchinhampton, residents benefit from personalised autistic care and support. Many autistic adults live reasonably well in society. However, for a small minority a predisposition to profound anxiety coupled with severe learning disabilities makes urban living arduous, challenging and overwhelming. It is for these people that Stroud Court exists. Working within a calm and structured environment, the team strives to improve the life of every single autistic adult living there. We aim to raise money for this charity in various ways over the coming year, but will start off with a Cake Sale during the Sunday view day for our March auction. Please come along and support us on Sunday 15 March 10-4pm, by buying a delicious cake as well as browsing the fascinating items in the forthcoming auction.
