SALEROOM NEWS SEPTEMBER | OCTOBER 2018 East, West, Antiques are Best September sale preview Chorley's kick off the autumn season of auctions with an Interiors sale with an Oriental twist. Offering a range of affordable decorative pieces, it will be the perfect sale for interior designers, home furnishers and collectors alike.

Lot 198

Elsewhere in the sale, a good sized French farmhouse table would make a perfect centrepiece to a Cotswold kitchen at £1,000-1,500 (Lot 756) while an interesting 'Trotter's Patent Cabinet' is a multi-purpose library companion featuring reading stand, magazine rack and drawers which looks great value at £200-300 (Lot 536).

Lot 536

Artworks which catch the eye are a 17th Century AngloFlemish school painting of two putti supporting the coronet of a Marquess (Lot 982). It has been suggested this could be an 'over-bed' panel to be hung within a state bed. With bags of decorative appeal, this carries pre-sale expectations of £1,000-1,500.

An early 19th Century Derby porcelain dinner service (Lot 198) would make an impressive decorative feature, but if you are planning a dinner party, then with 64 plates you can cater for quite a few guests! Decorated in the Imari palette with prunus branches it may be English but it has a distinctive Oriental look, estimate £400-600. Similarly, an eight-day mantel clock (Lot 842) retailed by Howell James & Co is set with finely decorated porcelain panels of chinoiserie figures. Howell James & Co were synonymous with quality and took part in the Great Exhibition of 1851, as well as being clockmakers to the Queen for a time, estimate £600-800.

Lot 982

Lot 842 A strong Asian art section has a lot of crossover appeal to the decorative market. A Chinese blue and white floor vase (Lot 264) stands at an impressive 59cm high and is decorated with landscapes. This 19th Century piece will appeal to Asian art collectors as well as decorators, estimate £800-1,200. Also dating to the 19th Century is a large tile, probably once set into a table top (Lot 221). Decorated in colourful enamels with a scene of galloping Mongolian horsemen, this bold statement piece is set to achieve £600-800. Lot 221 Lot 264

A bronze bust (Lot 373) by a founder member of the preRaphaelite brotherhood, Thomas Woolner (1825-1892), would be a perfect addition to a gentleman's library and depicts a figure of some note, Sir John Simeon, 3rd Baronet (1815-1870). After pursuing a Naval career, Simeon became a Liberal Member of Parliament for the Isle of Wight in 1837. He was a member of the Canterbury Association which sought to establish an Anglican colony in what is now the Canterbury region of New Zealand. He later he converted to Catholicism and resigned his seat in Parliament but was elected to the same constituency in 1865, serving for a time as the only Roman Catholic Member of Parliament from an English constituency.
