SALEROOM NEWS SEPTEMBER 2021 September auction preview
Lot 949
After the Summer break, we have a busy schedule of auctions planned for the Autumn. In October we will focus on art and design from the 20th Century to Contemporary, and in November our sale will make a feature of fine jewellery, silver and toys, but September’s two-day auction highlights the beauty and longevity of traditional antiques and objects. The Cotswolds has strong Sporting traditions, and it is no surprise that our auction offers a good selection of sporting prints, ceramics and collectables.
Lot 1041
Lot 976
Ever popular, no less than 18 prints by ‘Snaffles’ will be sought after by collectors of his amusing depictions of the trials and tribulations of horsemanship. The Gent in Ratcatcher (Lot 949) shows a rider in ‘ratcatcher’ jacket puffing on a pipe while in the vignette below a groom diligently brushes a horse until it gleams. Equestrian portraits always do well and among the oils, Lot 976, attributed to John Boultbee (1753-1812), depicts a bay hunter, Fearnought, standing in a landscape, estimate £500-700. Other sporting effects in the sale include a wide selection of taxidermy and mounted antlers, as well as other sporting related antiques. From less local origins, the sporting theme continues with the Glen Tutssel collection of Western saddles, spurs and chaps assembled over the course of many years. A leather Western saddle (Lot 1041) by N Porter & Co. Phoenix, Arizona, circa 1920, is one of several in the sale, estimate £400-500. Antiquarian books from the Library at Spetchley Park include a book of psalms, exquisitely designed by William Morris and printed by the Kelmscott Press in 1894, estimate £2000-3000 (Lot 154). A remarkable private collection of books by Winston Churchill includes an 1898 first edition copy of The Story of the Malakand Field Force with maps and plans, estimate £2000-3000 (Lot 240) as well as novels by H G Wells and H E Bates. Proceeds from Peter Little Collection will be donated to 7 different charities.

Having been involved in one of the world’s most important sales of ceramics in the late 1980s and early ‘90s, Chorley’s are thrilled to have been instructed by the third generation of the beneficiaries of the Rous Lench estate to sell the last pieces from the important porcelain collection. Among the English ceramics, the eye is drawn by the charming Chelsea porcelain figure of Hogarth’s pug ‘Trump’, modelled on a sculpture by Louis-Francois Roubiliac. Created in the mid18th Century by Nicholas Sprimont, manager of the Chelsea porcelain factory and friend of both Hogarth and Roubiliac, this is a rare hand coloured example and is estimated to realise £3000£4000 (Lot 340). The pug, together with most of the pieces Lot 340 now offered from the collection, was not included in any of the previous sales.
Lot 813
We are fortunate to have the space to be able to show off large pieces of antique furniture to its best advantage in our salerooms. Several finely carved and gilt wall mirrors will require a new home with tall ceilings. Lot 813 is a giltwood and gesso oval wall mirror of 18th Century style, standing over 2 metres high, estimate £3000-5000. From an important local country house, a pair of William IV mahogany library bergère armchairs exude quality and impeccable pedigree, estimate £3000 -5000 (Lot 619). On a rather smaller scale, three tiny but perfectly formed chairs for children will appeal to parents and grandparents alike, with estimates starting at just £40-60 (Lots 797 to 799).
