Bike Odyssey 2017: An experience that you have to live!

Pindos, the biggest mountain range of Greece, will host for the 5th consecutive time one of the toughest races in the world, Bike Odyssey 2017. Eight days-eight stages, 620 km, 19.800 m altitude gain differences in an intense experience of mountain biking. From village of Smixi in Grevena to the beautiful town of Nafpaktos, this race is indeed a bike odyssey. The route will contain trails and roads in wooded areas but also small section of flat road and will be a real adventure for the lovers of mountain bike. Bike Odyssey is certainly a magical journey as it crosses 57 mountain villages of extreme beauty and historical importance.

USEFUL INFORMATION Pasta Party At the end of every stage a pasta party will take place. In the pasta party every athlete will be served with a dish of pasta.
Bike wash In every finish station there will be specific areas with the appropriate equipment so the participants will be able to wash and take care of their bike. The bike wash service is provided free.

Every day the participants can spent the night in well prepared areas, where shower and wc are available.
Food supplies - Pit stops
The main food and water supplies in every stage will be available in three points along the way. The distance between those three pit stops is going to be almost equal. (for example in a stage of 100 km, there is going to be a pit stop at 25 km, the second at 50 km and the third one at 75 km). At the same time there are going to be five points where water is going to be offered. At the start of every stage, along the way and at the finish.
Rescue Team The voluntary rescue team will support the race. A team of 15 people will be present at the start, at the pit stops and at the finish of every stage, ready to provide health services if it is needed.
Luggage transfer The participants have to declare the number and the type of the luggage that they will have. Every participant has the right to have one backpack with the absolutely necessary that is going to be given in the organization team every morning from 7.30 to 8.00 am. At the end of every stage athletes can claim their luggage. Every luggage will have a number that all the athletes will be given from the race office.

Every participant will be given a name tag that will operate as an access card to the services of organization. Also at the back of the card there will be a list of the useful phone numbers that every athlete might need. The card must be carried from the athletes during the race from the start to the finish.
Participant’s number
Every participant will be given a number that will be placed at the front of its bike. The number must be visible. The number is unique and every athlete must keep it until the end of the race. Cards that will curry the same numbers will be placed in the luggage also so it can be recognized witch luggage belongs to who.
STAGES OF THE RACE Prologue Total Distance: 11,3km Altitude Gain: 346m Starting race of 11,3km at 1.220m altitude a small loop around 1km and then a paved path associated with a steep dirt path of 400m. Then 250m downhill asphalt right uphill dirt road 400m left downhill path which lasts for 4,5km where the lowest elevation 1.047m. It starts the first major uphill dirt road 3.3 km with a maximum slope close to 20%, reaching the highest point of the race 1271m. Then downhill initially with dirt road and towards the end a small asphalt track about 1km to the finish.

VILLAGES SMIXI Smixi is a mountainous village in the prefecture of Grevena, derived from the union (smixi means union in greek) of Pinakades village and Biga village, whose inhabitants wanted to escape from malaria. It is built at an altitude of 1,220 meters on the hillside of Smolikas Mountain and is one of the most mountainous villages of Greece. Ιts population is 750 residents. Due to its proximity to the ski resort of Vasilitsa it has become an important winter resort in the region. It located 38 km from Grevena.

Stage 1: SMIXI - KALLIROI Total Distance: 112,82km Altitude Gain (+): 3.219m Prestart race 6km asphalt road. The first 3 km are downhill and uphill the rest. From Smixi passage from Strangopetra at 1.537m towards Avdella and passing through the village. In Avdella take course for Stani Tiza and then take the E6 and pass the Salatoura Stavrou. Cross the core of Valia Calda with course for the neck of Milia. Leave the E6 and cross the provincial road Metsovo - Milia with course for the provincial Ioannina - Trikala. At the Snow Removal Station (old building) suddenly take right turn to the Anilio Ski Center on the Mount Dokimi and descend after the crossroad right and at the second crossroad left and descend to the village Stefani. CAUTION shaky ground! After Stefani continues downhill asphalt track, followed by 1,5km uphill to finish in the village of Kalliroi. 1st pit stop: 35 Tita 2nd pit stop: 63km Provincial Road Metsovo-Milia 3rd pit stop: 79km Anilio Ski Center ** Water there will be also in the square in Avdella.

KALLIROI Kalliroi is a mountain village of S. Pindos, at 1,040 m. between the peaks of Dahlia (1,500 m.), Kroutsia Paplou (1,700 m.) and Bournteni (1,750 m.), between Krania and Polythea. It is 60 km. away from Kalambaka. The approximately 200 residents (during the summer) engaged in logging (8,500 ha. forests with fir trees, pine trees and beech trees) and livestock. The natural environment remains unspoilt and this way has permitted the preservation of many wild animals in the forests such as deers, wolves, foxes, hares, bears and squirrels. The river of Kallirroi poured in Aspropotamos River is habitat for trout.

Stage 2: KALLIROI - PYLI Total Distance: 81,52km Altitude Gain (+): 2.608m Prestart 3km and then is given freeride uphill dirt road. At 10.9 km we pass over Krania village. Shortly after we meet the arcuate stone bridge Gikas, pass from Konakia village and head to the neck Golemi of Triggia Mountain. Downhill shaky sandgravel ground to Paleochori. At the 30th km wefind a crossroad right and come to the main road of Aidona - Trikala. At 34th km turn right and find bad dirt road, ascent, descend and find asphalt road and at the crossroad turn left and we come to Pertouli-Trikala road. We pass in front of Pertouli and shortly after abandoning the road, turn right and come across a dirt road and head towards the Vlacha village that is found at the 46th km. Follow the neck to Petrochori village where we descend to the village. At the crossroad turn left and shortly after right, we find a straight downhill and at the crossroad turn right to Pyli and pass over the stone arcuate bridge and then move in parallel with Portaikos River and finally passing a pedestrian bridge at the height of the Aghios Visarionas village terminate at Pyli. 1st pit stop: 26km Paleochori 2nd pit stop: 35km Chrysomilia 3rd pit stop: 46km Vlacha

PYLI Pyli is one of the most picturesque villages of Prefecture of Trikala. It has a population about 1.850 inhabitants, in an altitude of 230 meters and it is 18 km away from Trikala. There resides and the homonymous Municipality of Pyli. Previously, the settlement was called Porta (it means gate), because of the location where it is built, at the entrance of the canyon that leads to the mountain villages of Pindos. Through the village flows the river Portaikos, which then poured into the Peneus river.

Stage 3: PYLI - AGRAFA Total Distance: 82,78km Altitude Gain (+): 3.343m Prestart 7km in asphalt and then is given freeride. We continue along a dirt road ascent-descent until Vatsounia where we find a small asphalt track and begin to ascend 200 meters to the village Drakotrypa. Then we take the asphalt road for 12 km and turn left on the gravel road and ascend to the position Tympano (antennas). Right traverse Mount Karavas at 2.184m to palce Aghios Nikolaos and take course to Petrilo. Ascent to crossroad Tria Synora and descent for Koustesa through the village (we are alongside E4). Ascend to Vraggiana, descend to the Agrafiotis River and get riverside path and at the crossroad to Agrafa. 1st pit stop: 20km Platania 2nd pit stop: 45km Petrilo 3rd pit stop: 61km Vrangiana

AGRAFA Agrafa is one of the most well-known geographical and historical areas of our country and is an extension of the southern side of the mountain range of Pindos. Agrafa region consists of several peaks, some of which belong in the highest mountains of Greece. Agrafa Mountains are crossed by two rivers: Tavropos or Megdovas and Agrafiotis. Vast, beautiful forests cover the area. There are almost all kinds of trees. The landscape is amazing and the view from the various villages of the region is unique.

Stage 4: AGRAFA - KRIKELLO Total Distance: 108,72km Altitude Gain (+): 3.587 m Prestart after the village and after 1km uphill, is given freeride. We ascend the east Agrafa to reach 1.700m approximately (Morforachi 1783), we move right on the neck to descend to the village of Dafni. Before the village turn left for the Monastery of Metamorfosi and pass Tavropos from the bridge Papadia. Then we meet the asphalt, we turn left for Domianoi and Ag. Triada and traverse Velouchi from the east side to vertically cross the provincial road Lamia – Karpenisi with direction to Ag. Nikolaos. After dirt roads we fall into the provincial road Krikello - Karpenisi and take the dirt road that along with the provincial and ending in the village Krikello. 1st pit stop: 33km Dafni 2nd pit stop: 57km Aghia Triada 3rd pit stop: 80km Aghia Paraskevi at Aghios Nikolaos

KRIKELLO Krikello is located in Southeast Evritania. It is built at an altitude of 1.120 meters on the eastern side of Mount Kaliakouda near the sources of Krikellopotamos river (or Krikelliotis), and is one of the most mountainous villages in Greece. Once you enter the village you see seven water sources that run from the stone mugs. The cathedral church, Agios Nikolaos is the newest monument and is located in the central square of the village among dense trees.

Stage 5: KRIKELLO - ATH. DIAKOS Total Distance: 86,71km Altitude Gain: 2.461m Prestart 6km from which the first 4.5 km are downhill and then uphill the rest. We start from Krikello and take the asphalt to Domnista, pass the bridge of Krikellopotamos and then turn left to the village Stavloi. We climb the mountain Oxia to the top of Sarantena 1.923m to descend and find the gravel road Fardi Gardikiou - Grammeni Oxia. We turn right to Grammeni Oxia and pass through the village. We take the asphalt and we descend the bridge of Evinos, ascent to Artotina and move alongside Karyotis stream to reach the Mousinikiotika Livadia at Mount Vardousia. Leave at our right hand the mountain refuges and descend to Ath. Diakos. 1st pit stop: 25km Sarantena 2nd pit stop: 43km Grammeni oxia 3rd pit stop: 57km Artotina.

ATHANASIOS DIAKOS Athanasios Diakos (Ano Mousounitsa), is a village with many visitors throughout the year. The village is located on the north side of Vardousia at an altittude of 1.100m in an amazing landscape surrounded by a dense forest of firs, cedars, oaks, chestnuts, wild flowers, wild forest animals, wild ravines and springs, a landscape of rare beauty. Worth visiting: the archaeological sites, artificial lake of Mornos-Lidoriki, green plateaus on the tops of Vardousia-Iti.

Stage 6: ATH. DIAKOS - ANO CHORA Total Distance: 84,42km Altitude Gain (+): 2.119m Prestart 5km in asphalt road. Then is given freeride in Kato Mousounitsa and enter the dirt road, we find the village Koniakos at 13th km, descend to the asphalt and go alongside the lake of Mornos. Pass Kallio at 25th km and abandon the asphalt ascending the dirt road to the village Pentagioi. At 45th km enter asphalt and then at the 55th km take the forest road Elatou - Ai-Lias and in the end we enter in a 4.5km technical path to finish in the village of Ano Chora. 1st pit stop: 25km Kallio 2nd pit stop: 50km Pentagioi 3rd pit stop: 62km Forest road Elatou - Ai-Lias

ANO CHORA Ano Chora is a mountainous village of prefecture of Aitoloakarnania at the area of Mountainous Nafpaktia. It is built at an altitude of 1,060 meters on the western edges of Vardousia on the slopes of the hill called Kerasovouni, and is one of the most mountainous villages of Aitoloakarnania. It is approximately 52 km from Nafpaktos, which is the nearest big city. Located in the middle of an amazing forest of fir and chestnut trees that penetrate to the village. It is an area very special and unique in Greece and has fairly characterized as the “Alps” of Greece.

Stage 7: ANO CHORA - NAFPAKTOS Total Distance: 51,69km Altitude Gain (+): 1.046m Prestart 1.5km in asphalt road and then enter the dirt road and come across the first path that is uphill at first and then technical downhill for 1km. We ascend to the 8th km to find the second path with length of about 2.5 km and then descend to Kentriki from forest road and then on asphalt turn right on the gravel road to ascend to Makrynoros (1.380m) at the 23rd km where descent, we pass Agia Kyriaki and head to Chrysanthopoulos Inn where begins the third path mediating a small forest track. The trail is about 6 km and at the end of it we find the Ploumis Inn. Then we descent until we fall to Mornos River and biking in parallelwit it to its mouth. NAFPAKTOS Nafpaktos is a seaside town of prefecture of Etoloakarnania at the Corinthian Gulf, the capital of the former province of Nafpaktia. It is built between Antirrio and at the mouth of the River Mornos and is one of the oldest Greek cities enjoyed great prosperity periods and was linked to important historical events. This is confirmed by the excellent fortification, which begins from the port, continues with three successive walls and leads to the castle. It has been characterized as a traditional settlement and its population is 19.768 residents.

Penalties and other sanctions It would not be impossible to list all the possible violations of the rules of the race. Therefore, only some of them listed below. However, the director of the race in conjunction with the organizers may impose sanctions for acts and offenses not listed in the list below.
