ALACA IMARET MOSQUE

SOUVENIRS

Alaca Imaret Mosque, literally the “colorful mosque”, is a 15th-century Ottoman mosque located at Kassandrou street in Thessaloniki, Greece. It was built by order of Ishak Pasha in 1484 or 1487. It consists of a mosque with an imaret, public charity kitchen. The mosque has a reverse T plan common to early Ottoman architecture, the prayer hall where is under two large domes, and a portico covered by five smaller domes. The monument was rich in interior decoration and painting. A part of the dome with geometric clusters is preserved, on the “spherical triangles” of the main second dome and on the walls. Restoration of the monument had started in the early ‘90s, by the Municipality of Thessaloniki. Today Alaca Imaret is in very good condition and serves as an exhibition space where various events and periodicals take place.

The main task of this cource was the investigation of morphogenetic methods by parametric design tools, and the production of physical models using digital fabrication techniques. More particularly, the generated digital designs were materialised by 3D printing, laser cutting and CNC milling router. In addition, there were analogue fabrication methods applied for model creation. Specifically, vacuum forming and paper pulp molding. METHODOLOGY There are three staring models. - The first one is the intersection of the mosque. Four digital models were generated based on that, one of which materialised by 3D printing. - Second one is α quadrant part of the first main dome. From this architectural element six digital models were generated, two of which materialised by 3D printing and one by laser cutting cardboard. - The last one is a detail from the quadrant part. There were two models generated, one of which produced by laser cutting cardboard. This model was digitally modified in order to design a mold 3D printed for the paper pulp. In addition, a similar digital design was materialised in dow foam by CNC milling router. Finally, the dow foam model used as a mold for vacuum forming PVC sheets.

CARTE POSTALE There are three thematics of the presented card postals. LOST SITES A series of five images that represent imaginary architectural sites, have emerged by a few digital models that did not acquire any physical substance. In these coloured and textured images human figures are appeared to explore each site. Square frame (14.5x14.5cm) print. PHOTOS There is a series of 12 photos that capture the physical models created during this course. These photos focus on the materials texture, the morphological and structural patterns of each physical model. Square frame (13x13cm) print. DRAWINGS This is a group of card postals that consist of line drawings. More specifically these are details from selected blueprints of particular models. The blueprints were engraved by laser on cardboard. Square frame (10.5x10.5cm) engraved cardboard. https://www.thinkfree.gr/why-not-breakfast-at-tiffanys-%CF%83%CF%84%CE%BF%CE%B1%CE%BB%CE%B1%CF%84%CE%B6%CE%AC-%CE%B9%CE%BC%CE%B1%CF%81%CE%AD%CF%84/
