Letter from the Editor We wanted to say thank you for your great response to our ‘Reverse Advent’ article in our December edition. I have just had feedback from one of the organisers here and she said it’s been really successful and they’ve had a massive response. St. Peter’s Field Broughton also received a great response to the article published in Grange Now as they are exploring links to the names on their memorial; particularly poignant as we enter 2018 and look towards the 100th anniversary Remembrance Day. Looking back on the year, it is these type of community connections that makes Grange Now what it is. There is a always something new coming along, with people bringing in news stories, memories of past events or updates and changes to the clubs and societies they attend. A big thank you to all the contributors who help make a vibrant community newspaper that is fresh and useful every month. Dementia is an issue that impacts on many families, so the article on page 14 is both useful and offer the chance for carers to learn more and develop their skills. Looking ahead to 2018, I am sure many people will be planning a new start of healthy living and more exercise. If that sounds like you why not sign up to support Growing Well with their Run Every Day challenge for January. Don’t worry - walking is an option. More on page 5. Finally a big thank you to those involved in ‘Articles for the Blind’ - a service whereby a small group of our readers take the time to read this paper out onto a disc which is then posted out to those who appreciate it, and is a great community contribution. Wishing you all a positive year ahead, looking on the bright side of life.

Cover story

Allithwaite pupils get a golden ticket Barn Owls have been reading Charlie and the Chocolate factory and they celebrated with a Chocolate day!

“In technology we have designed our own chocolate bars and made our own wrappers. Mr Doran from the Hazelmere Café came into school to help us make our chocolate bars. He brought some special Belgian chocolate that we melted and added our own ingredients. He also brought some white chocolate which we drizzled over the top of our bars. When we made our bars, we picked our own ingredients : mint sticks, jellybeans, marshmallows, popping candy, Oreo biscuit, caramel, toffee, smarties, white chocolate and dark chocolate. The chocolate making was great fun and we loved making and eating the chocolate.

“After making the chocolate bars we made truffles with Mr Doran. He told us his secret ingredients and we rolled the truffles in vermicelli. We had to roll them until they went shiny so the sprinkles stuck to the ingredients. Thank you to Mr Doran and the Hazelmere Café for helping us and donating the ingredients.” Written by Mackenzie Hodgson and Harry Spibey – Barn Owls Class Allithwaite C of E School.

Grange pupil wins Christmas Card Competition Six year old Sophie Armitage from Grange Primary School got an early Christmas present when her Christmas Card was chosen as the winning design in a competition organised by South Lakeland District Council (SLDC).

SLDC’s Chairman, Councillor Eric Morrell, picked out Sophie’s entry to become the design for his official 2017 council Christmas card. Cllr Morrell said: “Instead of choosing a standard design from a catalogue I decided to ask the school close to where I live in Grange-over-Sands if they’d like to have a competition to create one for me. “Imagine my surprise when more than 100 children from Grange C of E Primary School took part, creating some wonderful, colourful, interesting, entertaining and original work.

“Sophie’s winning card design has very strong colours and the overall image works so well, it really stands out and makes me smile.” Sophie’s prize for winning the competition was a framed and

enlarged print of her drawing, an art set and 12 of the cards for her own use. The runners-up, six year-old Charlie Hirst and five year-old Elana Scott, both received a set of colouring pencils and also had their designs made into 12 cards.

Cllr Morrell says he hopes SLDC will do something similar next Christmas to involve the local community, “I would particularly like to thank the school and congratulate all the children who took part in the competition which has made a very special start to my Christmas. I know people who receive my cards over the coming weeks will be absolutely thrilled,”

Michelle Jurd Memorial Trust

St Mary’s Hospice benefit from collaboration

More than 130 guests attended the 8th Annual Michelle Jurd Memorial Trust (MJMT) Ball held on Saturday 18th November, at the Netherwood Hotel in Grange over Sands. The ball raised an incredibly impressive £15,500. Since the launch the MJMT has raised over £125,000. The money raised goes to promote adventurous training and arts based extracurricular activity for young people, and also makes large donations to military charities including the RAF Benevolent Fund and Gurkha Welfare Trust. Ball guests arriving at the Netherwood were welcomed by the Corps of Drums of Lancashire Army Cadets, who lined the very grand steps up the Netherwood Hotel’s imposing entrance. The MJMT has previously made donations to both Cumbria and Lancashire Army Cadets. Following the 3-course dinner, Neil Jurd

spoke to guests about the purpose of the charity, and thanked ball organiser Alison Read for her hard work and dedication. Guests then saw the short film that the MJMT has produced, showing the work of the charity. The film features pupils and teachers from Grange and Allithwaite primary schools, and Colonel Anthony Steven from Cumbria Army Cadets. The auctioneer, Mr James Leeper hosted the auction of a number of very special prizes, including a private

tour of Windsor Castle, a trip in a flight simulator, a VIP tour for the Aston Martin factory, dinner for 4 at Holbeck Ghyll Hotel and a helicopter flight over Windermere. Next year’s ball will be on 24 November, at the Netherwood Hotel.

Crompton’s Director Barbara Purcell and Lakes Beauty Products owner, Vanessa Burrow teamed up to offer a day of treatments and treats along with a raffle to raise money for St Mary’s Hospice. Many local business very generously gave prizes: Cromptons, Lakes Beauty, Scissor Sisters, Flounders fish and chip shop, Johnston’s of Grange, Hot Wines, Cartmel Brewery, Robinsons Electric, Higginson’s, Gentleman’s Room, Debs Cowperthwaite and Colin Burrow. A cheque for £350 was presented to Dr John Culling, who is one of the Doctors from the hospice. Many thanks to all who attended and donated.

Sign up to support Growing Well with RED Horticultural mental health charity Growing Well is asking people to sign up to R.E.D January as a way to beat the month’s infamous blues and to fundraise in support their work in South Cumbria.

Run Every Day (R.E.D) January is a 31-day challenge to walk or run each day of the month with the aim of getting people into exercise and feeling better. As well as being good for mental health, Growing Well’s General Manager, Clairelouise Chapman, hopes people will take part in this national initiative and fundraise for them. “One amazing nine-year-old has already pledged to raise money for us and Bay Search and Rescue with R.E.D January” said Claire Louise.

“Nancy Carr has also persuaded her mum Bex to join her with a daily 2k run and dad Darran will also be running and raising money for us” added Clairelouise. Bex Carr, an occupational therapist at Growing Well, says her daughter is committed to fundraising for local causes and chose two that she knows a lot about and wants to support. The family live in Grange over Sands so Nancy sees Bay Search and Rescue

at work. Nancy explained why this is important to her, she said:

Local Consultant opens the new Acute Stroke Unit at RLI

“I’m doing it because it helps people and it’s a good thing to do. I’m doing it for Growing Well because it helps people with mental health issues and they don’t always get the chance to do things. I’m doing it for Bay Search and Rescue because they help people who get stuck or trapped on the bay and they save lives… in fact both charities save lives in different ways”. Mum Bex says she and Nancy started running last year whereas her husband, a local postman, is more experienced and competes in the Lakeland Trails series.

l good health; they include growing fruit and vegetables, cooking in the field kitchen and helping with the running of the charity” added Clairelouise. Every year Growing Well helps over 100 people who are feeling depressed, anxious or finding everyday life difficult. Their support is free and people are usually referred to the charity by their GP or another NHS service but they can self-refer. Staff, patients and guests gathered on Monday 6th October for the opening of the new Huggett Suite at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI) by retired local Consultant Dr Isabel Huggett. The suite, which specialises in acute stroke care and cost over £1million, was named after Dr Huggett in recognition of the contribution she made to stroke and elderly medicine during her 32 years with the Trust. Now patients in South

Cumbria and North Lancashire will benefit from the unit in the Centenary Building, and will provide the area with six acute stroke beds and an assessment bay.

Dr Huggett said ”I am thrilled and honoured to officially open this new facility. The designated unit with staff skilled in the management of acute stroke gives patients the best chance of recovery and is a big step forward for patients attending RLI with a stroke”

Investment Matters By Gary Richardson FCIB, APFS I hope all readers had an enjoyable and relaxing festive break and are looking forward to a prosperous 2018. The 22nd November saw Chancellor Hammond’s first autumn budget. Whilst several key changes had been mooted there was little by way of major reform. On the one hand that was not a surprise given the delicate situation with Brexit negotiations, yet on the other hand the first major budget of a new government is often the time to release the bad news. First time buyers certainly won with stamp duty abolished below £300,000 on their first purchase. Most of the tax free allowances remained intact either at the same level or with some inflationary increase. Further change to pension legislation was predicted but absent which was certainly welcome. The comments in this Editorial are only general and should not be taken as specific advice. It is important that you seek independent advice before taking any action on the above, or any other, subjects. It should be noted that the value of some investments can fall as well as rise therefore you may get back less than originally invested. Past performance is not necessarily a guide to the future. Tidal Energy and Tidal Gateways The following article has its origins in a talk given to Grange Probus during November; you might have seen the summary in the Grange Probus Monthly report. GN asked Sean Jameson if he would be prepared to expand his report to give a more complete picture of the subject. This is therefore his personal opinion framed from the original talk and some additional online research’

A bit of an Introduction For some time the subject of Alternative/Green Energy has been in the forefront of the Nation’s, if not the World’s, consciousness. There is an undoubted recognition that traditional forms of power generation are not going to see us through the next peak in energy demand/consumption. Energy is nearly as critical to survival as water and food and is of course a key component in the production /provision of both. The challenge for us all now is to find a solution to the demand/ production equation. Talk of a silver bullet is clearly nonsense but a viable addition to the energy mix is essential.

What is Tidal Energy? They say that the only certainties are death and taxes; I suggest we add to those the rise and fall of

bays and estuaries by routing rail road and even cycle ways on top of them. These connectivity improvements will lead to significant carbon reduction due to a reduction of mileage/journey times and exhaust emission. There will also be benefits of flood control and protection from storm surges which could protect estuaries and intertidal habitats and feeding grounds.

There have been various concepts considered to harness the power of the sea, from different wave turbines to floating generators that flex and bend to generate electricity. Tidal Energy uses tidal movement, not wave motion, to generate electricity. Tidal Energy Gateways (which used to be referred to as barrages) involve the construction of a marine Hydro Electric Power Station across a bay or estuary. Inside it are turbine tunnels containing bi-directional turbines which utilise the tidal flow in both directions to turn them thus generating electricity. This occurs on both ebb and flow thus providing energy on four separate periods within a 24hr period

A particularly successful example of such a construction is across the Rance Estuary near St Malo in Brittany, France. The Gateway, built over 5 years between 196166 was, for 45 years, the largest tidal power station in the world until overtaken in 2011 by a South Korean installation. With a design life of 120 years and an average annual output of 500GWh, it now produces the cheapest electricity in France. See below.

Tidal Gateways are multifunctional in that they not only produce clean, renewable, reliable, predictable energy but also can improve connectivity across

Bay and The Duddon Estuary envisages power generating turbines and transport links from the M6 in the south to Millom with the potential to reach Moorside Nuclear Power Site, near Sellafield, should that project move to completion. The proposed gateways would carry roads that would reduce the distance around Morecambe Bay from 48 miles to 11/15 miles straight across and similarly The Duddon Estuary from 19 miles to 4 miles.

During the last century sea levels rose by 20cm; over the next 60 years they are predicted to rise by a further 47cm! Given that 50% of the prime farmland in the UK is below the 5metre contour and natural feeding grounds and habitats are at or very close to present sea level, we have no room for complacency.

UK Schemes The UK is second in the World only to Canada in the number of potential accessible and presently useable tidal energy. It is important to remember that tidal variation is the most important factor, not just coastline. The UK has 48% of the European total and the North West has 40% of the UK total; this would be enough to supply 5million homes for 120 years, which is the design life of a tidal gateway. Current schemes include that in Pentland Firth, between Caithness and the Orkney Islands and proposed between the Lleyn Peninsula and Bardsea Island. A very ambitious project, effectively linking tidal gateways across the Solway Firth, The Duddon Estuary, Morecambe Bay, The Ribble Estuary, The Mersey Estuary, and The Dee Estuary could make the North West a world leader in tidal energy. This would start with Morecambe Bay and The Duddon Estuary.

Morecambe Bay and Duddon Estuary Proposed Northern Tidal Power Gateways across Morecambe

The Northern Tidal Power Gateway Project has the potential to generate over 7500 construction jobs with the inherent benefits to the local economies. The long term benefits for Lancashire and Cumbria could also be significant, with new employment opportunities in key growth sectors such as advanced manufacturing, logistics and tourism.

The Future A government commissioned independent report (The Hendry Report) has commented favourably on the feasibility of Tidal Power contributing positively to UK energy production. It recommends the formation of a new body – Tidal Power Authority – and the funding of a ‘Pathfinder Project’ to test the concepts more thoroughly. It is hoped that in the near future there will be sufficient positive research to move into the feasibility phase of the Northern Tidal Power Gateway Project where all the necessary planning requirements will need to be met. Environmental concerns such as the effects on habitat types, biodiversity and impacts on water quality will also need to be addressed so that a start may be made. It is worth pointing out that technological advances in gateway and turbine design have led to significant reduction in these impacts. Consultants Mott MacDonald are already doing the necessary research in Morecambe Bay and the Duddon Estuary and have provided exhibitions in Barrow, Morecambe, Liverpool and other relevant agencies including Lake District National Park, Environment Agency, Natural England and the RSPB.

and present threat to Mankind, notwithstanding President Trump’s doubts. We, as a country, have agreed to the various global accords and EU reduction targets but seem to be consistent only in our failure to meet them. No one is suggesting that Tidal Energy is the solution to all our energy or environmental woes but it could play a significant part.

Using approximately 130 low head, bi-directional turbines the proposed gateways have the potential to generate over 6500GWh of electricity per annum; the equivalent of powering 1.6 million homes.

Grange Town Council

All councillors were in attendance for the full Council Meeting on Monday 11th December. The police were not in attendance and a police report was not submitted. Councillors voted to co-opt a new Town Councillor to fill the vacancy left by Lyndon Howson. Claire Logan was co-opted onto the Council by a majority vote.

Councillors considered options for the 2018/19 budget and unanimously voted for no increase in their portion of the precept. However, SLDC have yet to confirm the Street Lighting Charge for the coming period and if an increase is voted for this will appear under the GTC section of your council tax bill. When this happened in April 2017 Grange Town Councillors asked for this to be put under a separate heading of ‘Street Lighting’ but were told that this is unlikely to happen. Network Rail held a public consultation on Wednesday 6th December. Opinion on whether Bailey Lane Crossing should be closed was split and GTC has informed Cumbria County Council that there isn’t enough evidence to make an informed decision on this matter. The Town Council encourages Network Rail and the County Council to take action to resolve this situation. Next meeting: Monday 15th January 2018 at 7pm in Victoria Hall.

ADVERTORIAL

The Doctor can see you now When Steve Howard took voluntary redundancy at 55, he knew he didn’t want to tread water until retirement in a job for which he felt no passion.

After lengthy discussions with his partner, the couple decided that not only would they would bring their plans forward to move to the country, but that Steve would disregard the headhunters’ calls, leave employment and buy a franchise.

As the former regional director of a European spirits brands distributor, Steve had a strong commercial background and a wide range of international business experience. He wanted a franchise that would allow him to make use of his skills in a hands-on way. And after meeting with the operators of several business coaching, consultancy and mentoring franchises, Steve decided that home-grown SME consultancy franchise Business Doctors was the best fit for him.

“Business Doctors stood out because their values and aspirations fitted exactly with my own,” he said.

“There was no hard selling, no prescriptive ‘one size fits all’ programme to sign people up to and the service they offered was very much working on the ground alongside SME owners, helping their companies to grow.”

Now relocated to the beautiful Lake District, Steve says he has been welcomed with open arms by the local business community. “I have found people extremely receptive to what I have to offer and will be able to tap into a real need from local entrepreneurs and family businesses for hands on support with business growth.

“I knew I didn’t want to start my own business at the same time as moving to a new area, but being a franchisee gives me the freedom to be my own boss alongside enough support and guidance that I don’t ever feel out on a limb.”

Cathedral. Having studied at the Grand Chaumiere in Paris under Bourdelle, Rodin’s assistant, her flowing naturalistic carvings were strongly influenced by her faith. They also contrasted with the fashion of the period, when the abstract styles of Moore and Hepworth dominated. We have two of De Vasconcellos’ resin sculptures due for sale in March. One, an 11-inch long sculpture, may have been a working model for a 10ft statue sent to the Church of St Bartholomew, London.

Fortunately, her work can also be appreciated closer to home in churches around Cumbria and Abbot Hall Art Gallery, Kendal.

County Matters

Happy New Year to all our Library Users! The Library will be open as usual on Tuesday 2nd January 2018.

2017 was a year of contrasting elements especially weather wise.

An after School Code Club for children will be starting in the Library on Monday 15th January 2018. This will be for 6 weeks (excluding half term week) from 3.30 to 4.30 pm and is FREE for children aged 9 to 11 years. There are still some places available and booking is required. Drop into the Library or reserve a place by phoning 32749.

This year the Library will be celebrating 50 years since opening on 12th July 1968. We will have a number of activities to mark this occasion during the year, further details are to follow.

Storytime for pre-school children will restart on 9th January, for half an hour of stories and rhymes from 10.30 am on the 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th January. The Alzheimer’s Society will be holding their regular Drop In on the morning of Tuesday

The extremes of our weather system are becoming even more profound with an abundance of wet weather. We have had many instances of road and property flooding across our County and also in the Grange area. I have found that in these conditions neighbours and residents pull together to help each other. There have been a

30th January from 10.30 am to 12.30 pm. The next dates are 3rd April and 5th June. If you have been diagnosed with any form of Dementia, are a carer, or just want to find out more or get advice regarding support, please pop in for a chat.

Do you have old Wellies, Mobile Phones, Stamps, Glasses or Wool you no longer need? Why not bring them into the Library to recycle. They are collected in the blue boxes in the Library porch and marked with details of the charity they benefit.

few instances in the past year when some people especially drivers ignore flood warnings. They have proceeded through flooded roads and caused major disruption and danger to local residents as the bow wave from their vehicles has forced water into people’s properties. This is not only inconsiderate and dangerous it can also result in putting the emergency services in danger rescuing them from abandoned and flooded cars. The County Council have put out their budget consultation

document which is available on line and at your local library. The Lib/Lab Administration are recommending an increase of 3.99% for the forthcoming year 2018/19.The on line document is available at cumbria.gov.uk/ budgetconsultation until Monday 8 January 2018. As a new year starts I hope we can all help with a new year’s resolution to help a neighbour and make 2018 a year to remember.

Kindest regards, Bill Wearing, County Councillor Grange Division

The

Plot

GROWN WITH RANDOM LOVE

The word January is derived from the Latin word for door ‘ianua’ as it provides egress from one year onto the next, I had always thought it had something to do with that chap with the face on the back of his head, Janus, but Wikipedia has decreed he is the God of gates, doorways and passages and the month isn’t his at all. As cold, wet and miserable as this month is, you might struggle to get through your own doorway and down to the allotment. Luckily, for the majority of this month that’s fine, take a bit of time to order seeds and check over your tools, fix the punctured wheel on the wheelbarrow, sharpen things and have a think about the details of projects for upcoming months. On any rare clear bright days arm yourself with some insulating

leftover Christmas spirit(s) and have a good tidy up; look for overwintering slugs and snails and their weird opaque gelatinous eggs (that they will often lay under sheets of plastic) and squish or dispose of them in the least personally troubling way you can. Open up fruit cages to let wild birds in to scratch round in the earth for grubs and the larvae of various pests, remove old rotten plant matter, repair raised beds and other permanent structures. You can split rhubarb crowns to create new plants for forcing towards the end of this month. It’s also a good time for planting bare root raspberry canes or other woody plants, consider adding some mycorrhizal fungi in powder form to the planting hole to help them settle in, mulch with compost or leaf mould and stake against the wind. The stake in this case is to stop the roots moving around too much so the can grow into and become accommodated to their new surroundings happily.

On a bright sunny morning 16 Ramblers set out from Askham (near Penrith) for the 7 mile / 700 feet ascent of Heughscar Hill and Moor Divock before dropping down to the Green in Helton for lunch. The return leg included a gentle walk by the River Lowther to Askham Bridge and then back to Askham. The photograph shows ponies on Heughscar Hill with Ullswater in the background. Our arrival back in Askham was perfectly timed as the Queen’s Head Inn was just opening for us to enjoy some post walk refreshments.

Milk Kefir As a way of preserving food, fermentation dates back thousands of years but lately it has begun to be seen as an important way of producing friendly, health-giving bacteria that is good for our digestion. We need these good bacteria, or probiotics, to fight off harmful bacteria, restore the balance of our immune system and help our body work at its best. Here in the Low Sizergh Barn farm shop we have been gathering inspiration from Felicity Evans’ new book Probiotic Drinks at Home, and this month’s recipe is one of hers:

A New Year Diet, that won’t feel like a diet! Many find January a gloomy and uninspiring month, particularly when faced with the task of rebalancing the scales after the inevitable excesses of the Christmas period. But a New Year’s diet needn’t be all carrot sticks and herbal tea. It is important to retain a healthy and balanced diet even when you want to restrict calories or fat intake. A diet consisting of lean protein, fresh fruits and vegetables mimics the diets of our ancient ancestors and, proponents believe, best suits our genetics and digestion. We all know about the vast array of health benefits from eating vegetables and fruits, but what of the health benefits of lean protein? Lean meats are a good source of protein and are a great daily choice for those following low calorie and low fat diets, but lean meats have also been found to be able to effectively help achieve weight loss, ease stress and keep hair and nails looking shiny and healthy. This is due to the fact that lean meats are a good source of iron, B-complex vitamins, zinc, omega 3 fatty acids (the good kind of fat) and amino acids. Iron is important for promoting healthy red blood production, preventing anemia helping to

maintain energy levels. The B-complex vitamins help protect against inflammation, ease systems of anxiety by nourishing the nervous system and promote healthy skin, hair and nails. Amino acids are responsible for thousands of important bodily functions such as providing immunity and proper liver function. Why not try some of these delicious, lean meats this month as part of your balanced diet to start your 2018 the right way? We have some healthy meat options in our great value ‘Meat for a Week Box’ but our super healthy recommendations are as follows: Chicken breasts – super lean and versatile, great source of selenium, vitamins B3 & B6 and choline Turkey breasts – very lean and a brilliant source of vitamins and minerals Venison – tasty, healthy, very low fat content and has a great flavour Extra Lean Beef Mince – healthy and great for cooking a wide range of meals Don’t forget that our knowledgeable staff are always available to advise you on what to buy, to help with your dietary requirements. All the best for a healthy 2018 from the Higginsons Team!

Dignity in Dementia Dementia is an umbrella term used to describe a range of progressive diseases that cause problems with brain functioning. Each type of dementia will have its own set of symptoms, which relate to the specific part or parts of the brain that become damaged. The two most common types of dementia are Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia, however there are many other types. Some people can also have a mix of different types of dementia. How dementia affects an individual will vary depending on the type they have, how it travels through their brain, their environment and their life experiences. However common symptoms can include:

experience will inevitably impact on close family members and friends too. Family carers can often feel overwhelmed by the situation, out of their depth and even isolated. After all, very few people undergo training, which prepares them for the role and therefore they do the best that they can to get by, generally with very little on-going help and support. No wonder then that they can feel engulfed by the enormity of the situation. And when they are feeling stressed, the person that they care for is likely to feel anxious and tense too as they will pick up on their emotions. It then becomes a bit of a ‘Catch 22’ situation with each feeding of the stress of the other.

• Problems with vision.

However, Dignity in Dementia, an award winning social enterprise based in the South Lakes has designed an 8 hour programme (over 4 weeks) for family carers to help them develop understanding and skills which will assist with their caring role. It’s practical and easy to use dementia guidance, help carers connect more effectively with the person they support, leading to an improved quality of life for both.

When someone gets dementia, it’s not only the individual that is affected. The changes they

It provides much needed information to cope with dementia.” The programme is equally useful for people who have been carrying out their caring role for some time or those who are new to it. Dignity in Dementia’s next programme will be starting on Wednesday 31st January, 10am – 12 noon at The United Reform Church Hall, Grange-overSands and then the following 3 Wednesdays. CHURCH NEWS ADVERTORIAL

Remembrance Reminder with Christmas Links

Lifting the Veil on Boarbank

At St Peter’s Field Broughton we have 12 names on our War Memorial, so we decided to remember each individual on a monthly basis leading up to the 100th Anniversary Remembrance Day in 2018. The response to the article Grange Now published on this a few months back has been amazing. As a result, we were honoured and delighted to welcome Cyril, the nephew of Timothy Benson, to our first special ‘remembrance’ in November. It was a very moving part of the service, especially as Cyril had brought along his uncle’s medals and the original letter which came with them. Our Nine Lessons and Carols on December 10th was our next ‘second Sunday in the month’ and we remembered

John Churchman: a poignant start to our Christmas celebrations, but appropriate as we mentioned the carols sung in the trenches before

St. Paul’s

United Reformed Church Wow! Christmas is over! We had wonderful services to celebrate this special time of the year. Thank you to all who helped to make them so.

Our Christmas Fair on the 2nd December was a great success, raising £1800 and with around 300 people visiting. There was a lovely atmosphere in the Church and all the various stalls were busy. The catering team had to work hard to keep up with demand; bacon sandwiches seemed particularly popular. The Church was full for the opening of the Christmas Tree Festival on the 8th December. Tim Farron gave the opening address and involved the children in the combined Grange and Lindale Schools’ choir by asking them about their favourite Christmas films. He concluded by stressing that there was only one important story at Christmas, the birth of Jesus. During the first carol the 30 Christmas Trees were lit along with candles down the sides of the aisles. The schools’ choir closed the first half of the evening with three songs – including ‘Jingle Bells’ and

the famous 1914 Christmas Eve truce, and the first Nine Lessons and Carols service held at King’s College Cambridge in 1918 to celebrate the end of the war. If there are any relatives who would like to attend these services please contact the church via the website for further details and the names of those to be remembered.

Thank you also to all who supported our Christmas Coffee Morning. Now to the New Year; The Women’s Guild will resume their meetings on Wednesday, January 10th at 2.30pm. Also the next Dementia Friends Tea Service will be held on Monday, January 22nd at 2pm. Don’t forget that we have a mid-week Service at 10.30am on Thursday mornings. Everybody welcome! ‘I’m Still Standing’. During the interval drinks and nibbles were enjoyed by all. The Bay Singers then sung a variety of songs from traditional to modern, including a Beatles medley. Our Curate Andrew closed the event, thanking the choirs, organisers and those who had decorated the trees. Donations were collected for St Mary’s Hospice and the Food Bank. A joyous occasion.

Happy New Year to you ALL.

All welcome The Church meets every first and third Sunday each month at 10.30am. at Grange Primary School.

As another year draws to a close and the new one is just around the corner, full of promises, wishes and hopes, it’s a time of reflection at Boarbank.

We ask ourselves: did we do our best? Did we make a difference? Did we learn any lessons? The answer to all three is yes. With the constant unwavering support from the Sisters, we cared for so many patients, relatives and friends. We made a difference to those in need and we all learned valuable lessons about ourselves and each other. All of which have brought us closer together as a team. We have shared laughter, tears, sympathy and love and throughout remained professional. I am proud of my team and I am proud to have served another glorious year as Matron of Boarbank. So dear readers, we at Boarbank would like to wish you a peaceful New Year and by this time next year as strangers we will have become friends.

If you didn’t manage to get along to one of the performances of Dick Whittington & his Cat, by the youth of Grange & District Amateur Operatic Society, then you missed an absolute treat.

Grange Panto was the perfect start to Christmas

The professional, polished cast had the audience singing, clapping and crying with laughter. The acting, dancing and comedic timing are to be applauded. Toby Wright who played the London-dwelling, Yorkshire-speaking, Alderman was a firm favourite with the audience with his scenestealing hilarious performance.

But the laughs didn’t stop with him as Dolly Dumpling (Amy Shepherd) and her son, Idle Jack (Reece Carter) were on top form and brought many more laughs with their slapstick routines. Tom Shepherd, (always funny) played Captain Cuttlefish and was aided and abetted by pantomime newcomer, Alice Payne. This tiny nine year old bounced onto stage and was superb in her role as the Captain’s hapless mate Scupper. Faye Hill took on the lead role of Dick Whittington and showed what an accomplished singer she is while Emily Kate Unsworth played Dick’s cat to purrfection (sorry!) Jason Mason was brilliant as the evil King Rat and we’re sorry to report that this was James’ last pantomime as he goes off to University next year but we wish him well with his studies. His son, Prince

Rat, was magnificently played by Max Burrows surrounded by his scary looking and very well-played Ratlings: Amos Rand, Anna Wilson, Annabel Holcroft, Holly Lloyd, Lily Lloyd and Nerissa Blatchley. Caitlin Mason showed off her singing and acting ability as The Alderman’s daughter and Dick’s true love, Alice while Martha Rand was in fine voice as her friend Victoria.

The story was narrated in true pantomime fashion by ‘London Fairy’ Zoe Tunnadine in her second outing at the panto. Izzie Shires played her role, The Sultana, with aplomb with scathing looks at the hapless crew washed up on her shore but all was well when they managed to rid her palace of rats. Katie Gregory not only danced but she choreographed the

beautiful routines for this year’s show and she said the dancers: Alice Kerr, Emily Payne, Katie Shepherd, Rebecca Wilson and Nerissa Blatchley worked really hard. The sets and scenery, produced once again by Sarah and Steve Shires, were outstanding Jean and Mick Malkin have once again produced and directed a pantomime which absolutely delighted the audience with many saying, “They just keep getting better and better”. As do the fabulous costumes thanks to Hilary Stubbs. Thanks to Ann Heap for everything she does. There isn’t room here to mention everyone who makes sure these productions are as slick and professional as they are.

There’s Much Ado at Cartmel Priory Calling all actors, professionals and Stage Managers! If you’re looking for your next big theatrical adventure, we have an offer you can’t refuse. 2017 has been an exciting year for Cartmel Priory. It is now officially the home of ‘The Marshal’s Theatre Company’ where the sell-out production of Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ first aired in September. Following the play’s enormous success with the local community, ‘The Marshal Theatre Company’ are already planning their next production. This shall be one of Shakespeare’s best-known plays, ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ and will be a prominent part within The Priory’s annual Arts Festival

next September. Professional director, Sandra Williams, is excited to lead the helm: ‘We’re all absolutely thrilled at the positive response and feedback we had about ‘Dream’. ‘It was a complete success. “We not only covered our costs, it also proved to be a highly enjoyable experience for the cast, crew and audience. “The team at the Priory were a tremendous support; especially given it was a new venture for them and at times it must have been very unnerving.’ ‘It’s a credit to them that they want The Priory to be our official home.” ‘The Marshal’s Theatre Company’ is unique in being the first community theatre group to be so affiliated

and tied within a C of E establishment. As a first for Cumbria and nationally, such a partnership is exciting and revolutionary. Following on from the success of ‘Dream’, hailed as ‘fresh and innovative’ by its audiences, there are a number of opportunities for local actors, professionals and amateurs, to get involved in the new play. In addition, there is a vacancy for a Stage Manager/Assistant Director and an Assistant Stage Manager. This is a voluntary community theatre company, professionals and amateurs are welcome and it is open to all faiths and none.

Auditions will take place in mid-January/early February. Anyone interested should email: willimc@btinternet.com

ART & MUSIC

On the Grapevine

Have you heard that the first Play Reading of 2018 is coming up later this month: Thursday 18 January 2018 at Grange Institute, starting at 7.30 pm. Members and friends of Grange Drama together with Margaret McDonagh will turn to a script based around the life of working people between the two World Wars and into the 1940’s. Taking a serious subject, Lee Hall, a playwright possibly better known for his successful screen and stage work Billy Elliott, has filled this play with the dry humour of working miners.

The Pitmen Painters by Lee Hall Hall was first inspired by the writings of William Fever and thus had at his disposal a wealth of documented material

about life in the mining communities of the north east. The few leisure hours of pitmen were often taken up with drawing and painting, some became unexpectedly famous. For example the work of the Ashington group of miners together with Norman Cornish of neighbouring Spennymoor, today hang in museums and art galleries for us all to see. Somehow the graphite and charcoal sketches echo coal dust and show to advantage the miners’ daily toil underground. The same men are recorded at their local pub, enjoying a beer and a chat, often complete with their dogs. This was a life which has long since disappeared but Lee Hall has taken up the story for us to hear about the importance and value of community education when those leaving school at a very early age were forced to work down the pit. The north east accent is written into the text, a

challenge for any actor, professional and amateur but readers can choose to ignore it and just enjoy. Why has the play been such a sell out wherever it has been staged including The National Theatre? Of course it cannot be overlooked that Norman Cornish was first introduced to TV viewers, promoting his Newcastle Art Exhibition on the South Bank Show. Yes, Cumbria’s Melvyn Bragg, like always, introduces a piece of social history close to his heart, opens our eyes and ears! Ears - there is talk of developing specific workshops and recording radio shows later this year so why not come along and see if the rumours are just rumours, but for definite and for one night only ‘Nine Readers Wanted’ - seven men, two women and maybe a dog called Geordie. A very special year for Jean Malkin Not only has Jean completed her 70 lakes and tarns swimming challenge in this, her 70th year, but she’s also just produced and directed a fantastic production of Dick Whittington & his Cat. At the end of the final performance, on Sunday 10th December, a Northern Operatic & Dramatic Association (NODA) representative took to the stage to present Jean with her 50 year service Gold Bar Award. Congratulations Jean.

Victoria Hall Support Group Since the Group was formed about 8 months ago, the community response has been really encouraging, showing high regard for the Hall and determination to preserve it as a meeting place. More and more groups are using the Hall, developing it as a vibrant Community

Centre, and not only as a Performance Hall. VHSG events are well-attended, and the money receipts from these, and donations, mean we can now apply for full charity status. This will mean we can bid for funds from nationwide grant-aiding bodies. Every penny raised by the VHSG goes directly into improving the Hall’s facilities. The current major project is refurbishment of the balcony seating. In the

New Year, besides continuing with regular community events, like monthly Bingo, Jazz evenings, and ceilidhs, ideas are being worked-up for new, unusual events (watch this space!); and we’ll have our first AGM. The VHSG Committee welcomes suggestions for any sorts of activities from anyone – that’s a challenge to readers. A full programme of events or 2018 will be published soon.

IB School of the Year

Windermere School has been named in the Sunday Times as the International Baccalaureate (IB) School of the Year for 2018. The Sunday Times published its 25th edition of Parent Power which identifies the 2,000 highest-achieving schools in the UK, which are ranked according to their examination results. Among the winners this year was Windermere School, where all sixth-formers follow the International Baccalaureate programme, as they have done since 2009. In 2017, and for the second year in succession, the school celebrated record-breaking IB results. The mean score of 35.03 is the highest average score the school has achieved since the IB was introduced. The Diploma Programme offers a more rounded education to A-levels, comprising six subjects, which must include Mathematics, English, at least one foreign language, one science subject and one humanity subject.

Headmaster, Mr Ian Lavender was quick to acknowledge the role of the students, their families and the staff, stating; “This staggeringly impressive achievement is a reflection of the whole school community. We were awarded this prize because of what we achieve with an academically non-selective intake of students. In short, we have been recognised for delivering the best outcome for all of our students.

Flookburgh Primary

We have had an extremely hectic end to our Autumn term with much to cram in! Early in December our Enterprise Day saw us holding a Christmas Market where the children sold products of their own design and making to the local community. Our school choir also ventured off to Holker Hall where they performed some traditional carols for the attendees of the Holker Christmas Fayre. Our last week of term saw us performing two different Christmas productions, with Early Years and Key Stage 1 performing their Nativity in the packed our church! The whole school led their two performances of ‘Lights, Camel, Action!’ which raised many a

laugh from the audience. Our Lego Team ventured off to the tournament in Barrow-in-Furness on the 14th, and did really well with their robot scoring many points on its obstacle course. The children rose to the challenge admirably considering this was the first time we had participated! For further details and pictures of all

of these events, please check out our website and our new Facebook page. We hope everyone comes back to school refreshed after the Christmas break!

Hopefully you have all had a really nice Christmas and New year, but as is often the case, carpets and upholstery can take a bit of a battering during the party season; so if like the lady in the illustration your home is looking a little the worse for wear, give us a call to revive your carpets and upholstery to a pristine condition. We are a local, independent carpet and upholstery cleaning company utilising 21st century processes allied with state of the art equipment to deliver exceptional results at very competitive prices.

We also clean upholstery, including leather.

SCHOOL REPORT

Cartmel Priory

Cartmel Primary December at Cartmel CE Primary School was packed with Christmas activities, led by a superb Nativity.

The Christmas season is always a special time, with many festive activities taking place. Cartmel Priory School’s evening of ‘Carols & Music by Candlelight’ was certainly a special event. There were talented individual performances from: Tom C – Piano, Marth R – Viola, Becky McC – Guitar & Vocal, Tom L – Saxophone, Andrew B - Saxophone & Piano, Isabel W – Saxophone, Charlie R – Saxophone, P Bell – Piano, Libby E – Flute & Piano, Sophie J – Piano, Suzannah B – Saxophone, Joe W – Flute and Rebecca W – Vocal.

Stunning joint performances included ‘We Three Kings’ by Philippa and Andrew B on the Flute and Sleigh Ride by the Flute Group, accompanied by Mrs Heath. The School Band (pupils and staff) performed ‘Can You Feel the Love Tonight’ by Elton John and Christmas Potpourii, arranged by Jan van der Goot. The evening finished with the Band performing ‘We Wish You a Merry Christmas’ accompanied by the audience – a rousing end to the concert! The School’s Christmas Service was held on Thursday 14 December in the magnificent location of Cartmel Priory, Rev Nick Devenish and Year 9 pupils leading the service. Christmas Dinner followed with the Catering team pulling out all the stops with traditional festive fayre and sticky toffee pudding for afters!

The Talent Show was held on the last day of term, with children performing for the staff and their peers. The show is always lots of fun and finished the Autumn Term on a high note. May we take the opportunity to wish our school and community a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Allithwaite Primary This month we have decided to include some quotes from our children so that you get a feel for the events through their eyes… As you would expect, December is very much about Christmas! We have performed our whole school Nativity ‘Children of the

Every child at the school had a part to play in the performance, which was staged against the backdrop of a Christmas tree in the beautiful Cartmel Priory. We are very lucky to have such a stunning setting for our Christmas celebrations. Children took part in two more events at the Priory, singing carols outside for Cartmel Market visitors on the last day of term, and performing at the ‘Light up a Life’ service with St Mary’s Hospice. They also took a trip to see the pantomime of Aladdin at the Dukes

Theatre in Lancaster—Oh yes they did!—and had a special turkey lunch together. A Christingle service and a Christmas fair that raised nearly £1,000 for the school’s Friends group completed our festive fun. In amongst this there was still time for children to

enjoy all of the school’s regular activities and after-school clubs. These have included a club to produce our first ever school magazine, featuring the best of classes’ work, reports from recent school trips, puzzles and revealing interviews with teachers. Copies are available now!

Grange Primary Grange CE School choir joined with the Lindale School Choir to entertain everyone who attended the Christmas Tree Festival on Friday 8th December.

It was a magical evening with candles and tree lights as the children performed three songs including I’m still standing and Jingle Bells. Thanks go to Lydia Scales and Emma Kerr, who as parents and volunteers, have worked so hard to prepare the children for this event – they are stars! Well done to Edwin who also played piano during the festival. The school nativity play ‘Busy Busy Bethlehem’ was performed to a full house during the penultimate week

World’ and each and every child was truly amazing.

“We really liked making props and using them. We felt that the nativity was a great opportunity for the younger children to gain confidence and everyone of them were superstars!” The Eagle Owls sang carols at Abbott Hall. We would like to thank them for their generous donation. We are also looking forward to singing at Boarbank and the Old Vicarage before the

of term. This was enjoyed by all and will be followed by the nursery sharing their nativity tableau with parents and friends on the last day of term. Our School Councillors and Rotakids were invited to the Netherwood hotel on 6th December to meet the local Rotarian group over lunch and to sing carols around the

end of the month. Alesha: “Although I felt nervous singing solo, it was a really enjoyable experience and it was a beautiful setting to go and sing in. It was lovely to see how happy us singing made the people, it was great fun being able to sing with our friends.” Our Christmas fair was amazing. Thank you to all our donors, you made many raffle winners very happy!

piano; a great time was had by all. Mrs Jamieson, our Rotakids leader, presented a collage of photographs to the Rotary group which illustrated the many events and projects the children have been involved in over the year. These include collecting for the food bank in Barrow and planting crocus bulbs to mark the Polio Campaign.

We have consolidated our learning around our Christian value: ‘Responsibility’. Some of our Year Six children planned and led their own Church worship in front of the whole school and visitors, well done! The children who led worship commented:“We really enjoyed acting as part of the worship and had fun putting it together. Rev Rach was really good at helping plan the worship.”

Grange Lecture Society

Retired forensic pathologist Michael Green spoke on 21st November about medical mysteries from the Old Testament in a humorous lecture entitled ‘Priests, Piles and Parasites’. He discussed some of the mysterious afflictions mentioned in the Old Testament, diagnosing what they could or could not have been, and explained how in rendering the original Hebrew early translators could only refer to diseases they knew, some of which, like leprosy, weren’t around in biblical times.

Antique Roadshow’s Paul Atterbury spoke on 5th December about Britain’s lost railways. In an enjoyable lecture Paul looked back nostalgically on the 19th Century origins of the railways and how they changed Britain with the rapid expansion of their buildings and infrastructure and the important economic and social effects of their countrywide freight and passengercarrying services.Despite the closures of the Beeching era, we still needed railways and he noted initiatives like the opening of heritage lines. His accompanying photographs showed the railways in their heyday and relics of lost lines today. On 9th January Christine Robinson talks about her experiences as Housekeeper at Chatsworth and on 23rd January John Beatty reports on more ‘Adventures in the Wild’. Lectures begin at 7.15pm in the Victoria Hall.

North Lonsdale Tennis Club

Tennis doesn’t stop for us through the winter, just need the right clothes! The recent rain has, however, disrupted some of our social and winter league matches. The Flukes and Flounders managed 3 games in November with the weather causing 4 cancelled fixtures.

The astroturf courts were unfortunately flooded in the recent severe rain but drained quite quickly and continue to provide an excellent playing surface often commented on by visiting clubs. Recently we have installed additional wind screening which helps to keep the wind off the courts keeping the ball flight true. Social sessions are now at 1pm on a Sunday and a good number of our members are regularly attending maximizing the sunlight in these short days…

A good time was had by all at the Pheasant Inn, the venue for our Presentation evening. 30+ members discussed the season which had

just been and the possibilities for next year. Prizes were presented to the club champions. Following the presentation the club held its Annual General Meeting and the club was felt to be in a good state and also in good hands!

Grange over Sands Golf Club Unfortunately we had to cancel the Jazz night but we hope to hold it next year, so keep a look out for details.

The ladies have been busy decorating the Clubhouse in readiness for our Christmas Lunch, it is looking very festive and a big thank you to the ladies who helped. The Junior section are having a great time with the lessons put on by our Pro, Nick and are coming along very well.

Due to the heavy rain a couple of weeks ago, our Pro’s shop was flooded and is still drying out. Grange Lions

The coffee morning held last weekend at Flookburgh Village Hall was very well supported as usual and we are grateful to those who attended and enjoyed our bottle tombola, cake stall, raffle and other attractions. The sum of £413 was raised which we will donate to local good causes. We will have completed our rounds with the sleigh by the time you read this. Our first trip round Grange was well supported and we hope the cold weather doesn’t interfere with our future trips round Lindale, Allithwaite, Flookburgh and Ravenstown.

We are a small and very focused team who enjoy each other’s company and would welcome with open arms anyone who would like to join in with our activities. We meet on the first and third Wednesday of each month

Grange-Over-Sands Society

Civic

On 15 December a “self-selecting” group of members enjoyed a visit to the National Trust property at High Lickbarrow Farm (which was featured recently on BBC1’s Countryfile programme).

The visit began with an extremely informative and entertaining talk on the history of the Bottomley family (who bequeathed the property to the NT), the house, the farm and its livestock by Fiona Green who manages the property on behalf of the National Trust. A unique feature of High LickbarrowFarm is that visitors are allowed to self-explore the property and spend as long they wish on each area of the house and farm. In addition we were allowed to handle artefacts (for example the farm diary for 6 January 1980 showed that the forms for farm subsidies had been completed!)rather than view them from behind ropes.

Although the weather prevented extensive outdoor exploration (unsurprisingly for December) it was possible to appreciate the tranquillity of the farm and its surroundings. A return visit to the farm during Spring or Summer will be considered. Further details about the Civic Society may be found via its website at http:// www.g-o-s-civic-society.btck.co.uk/ or its Facebook page at www.facebook. com/GrangeOverSandsCivicSociety/.

Grange Over Sands NSPCC

On Saturday, 25th November, the Grange over Sands NSPCC held their Annual Christmas Coffee Morning in the United Reformed Church Hall. This was a great success thanks to everyone who came to support the work of the NSPCC in this area. The grand sum of £314.56 was raised, all of which will go to help vulnerable children in Cumbria. We look forward to seeing everyone at our forthcoming events this year. Meanwhile, Grange over Sands NSPCC would like to wish all our supporters a very Happy New Year.

GRANGE GARDEN SOCIETY In November we held our AGM which, despite poor weather, was wellattended and lively. This was followed by a sociable Jacob’s Join and lighthearted “gardening” quiz.

To round off our varied Programme of Events for 2017 members and friends enjoyed a festive Christmas Lunch in December. Our first meeting of 2018 will host Alan Oatway, a well-known local plantsman and alpine specialist, who will give a talk entitled “Woodland and Rock Gardening in South Lakeland.”

Prior to the talk, members old and new will have an opportunity to renew their annual subscription to the Society.

The meeting on the 12th December was well attended and presided over by president Caroline Blee with flowers artfully arranged by Jean Mallinson.

The talk by Dr. Ruth Alcock, ‘Lancaster University and its Global Partnership’ was far more interesting than the title would suggest. For a start, we all got a free pen and the competition winners got goody bags. The University is a world leader in Environmental Sciences and has partnerships with Malaysia, China, India and Brazil and a campus in Ghana, West Africa. It also works closely with local agencies such as the Lake District National Park on water quality and businesses such as Witherslack Woodland on tree growing and butterfly habitats. Building of phase one of a medical department, the ‘Health Innovation Campus’ is due to start in January 2018. All very impressive and the home made mince pies were delicious too. January’s talk will be ‘Barrow to Baghdad’ by Philip Caine. Happy New Year.

The annual Christmas Lunch featuring the usual fun packed Chorley raffle raised a goodly sum for Friends at Christmas and we hope our participation in Santa’s Sleigh around Lindale village the following day will do the same.

At our November meeting Janet Ferguson led us in a fun festive craft evening and we made our own Xmas table decoration in a cracker. A feast of food followed helped down with mulled wine. Eating and drinking continued into December with a delicious festive meal at Hampsfell House Hotel. Janet led us once again with a festive party game which required great concentration and skill – won by Jen Hewitt. The winners of our monthly competitions were announced at the meal – Jane Hoggarth and Denise Wain. Members displayed their creative skills with our decorations for the Xmas tree in St Pauls Church. Lots to look forward to in 2018 with a programme of talks, outings and craft events. Jane Bradley visits in January to demonstrate willow weaving. New members are very welcome. Contact Margaret on 36735 for more details.

New Master of the Arthur John Brogden Lodge The new master of the Arthur John Brogden Lodge of freemasons based in Grange is Chris Band. Chris is one of the senior figures of the masonic area of West Lancashire.

His installation as master attracted the attendance of Tony Harrison who is the head of West Lancashire Freemasons. Tony was accompanied by members of his provincial team. Their role, which is mainly ceremonial, added great colour to the occasion.

Chris joined Arthur John Brogden lodge on moving to the South Lakes area and was previously the head of a lodge in Fleetwood. Following the ceremony a three course meal was enjoyed in the lodge. To mark the occasion Tony was presented with a donation of £1,200 for distribution by the national masonic charity. Earlier in the month a fundraising evening was and £2,063 was raised for St Mary’s Hospice in Ulverston. Event organiser Barry Saunders and lodge charity officer Bob Woods visited the hospice to present the donation

FRIENDLY HONEST PROPERTY ADVICE Recycling Resolutions? Repeating Revelations! So we find ourselves facing up to another New Year. Twelve months have flown by all too quickly and once again the promise of another successful year is in front of us. Tempting as it might be to recycle last years Property Talk, as we generally tend to do with last years resolutions, I thought it might be fun to reminisce over the property market past, present and future – A Grange Property Christmas Carol, Charles Dickens would be proud! New Year 2017 brought with it early activity. No sooner had the turkey been discarded than the property market shrugged off the merriment of the season and picked up pace. Tradition expects the market to pick up at the end of February – by this time we had already agreed 16 sales and begun marketing a further 21 new instructions. This turned out to be a fitting prediction for the year. As the year progressed so did the market. By the end of May Poole Townsend had a healthy 32% share of the property sales in the area, leading the market once more. On the summer horizon came a new agent but more importantly a new image for Poole Townsend. Our re-brand introduced a revitalised product individually tailored to your requirements. Extended contact hours, live chat on our property centric website and video tours all improved our already impressive sales package. Coupled with our exceptional customer service standards and No Sale – No Fee promise this saw the results really come into their own.

SALE PRIC

Since June the market has been as vibrant as ever. As always property prices are relatively unaffected by national fluctuations and the continued draw of the local area meant that property just kept selling. Poole Townsend continued to dominate the market place to the extent that for the period between the 1st September to the 30th November we agreed as many property sales as the other ten agents listed sold all together! Reason to celebrate over the Christmas period.

! HURRNYDS

So to the future. The property market yet to come. Continue in our ways and further success will surely follow (although unlike Ebeneezer Scrooge our past year has been filled with helping others). The hope that the healthy market from last year is mirrored in the next fills us all with excitement. We hope to see you in the near future should you decide now is the time to make that move.

E SALE XT N IN E S 21 DAY

Here at Poole Townsend we hope you have had a very Merry Christmas and a would like to wish you all a happy and prosperous New Year.
