Letter from the Editor It was a lovely moment to see Jeremy and Mandy Voakes visit our office to announce the fundraising total from their fabulous Christmas lights.
Sheila Tyson, represnting the NSPCC was just thrilled as the couple informed her that this year’s total came to over £5,330 - a whopping 44% increase from the year before. It was like watching someone being told they had won the lottery. Well done to everyone involved and all those who donated. Read more on page 7.
So is it finally time for the Lido to be refurbished. After numerous false alarms over the years, SLDC’s press relations officer was happy to be quoted as saying...

Investment Matters By Gary Richardson FCIB, APFS When managing your investments it is important to have the correct basic structure in place. Retaining sufficient cash reserves aside, this covers key elements such as fully utilizing all of the tax free or tax privileged allowances available (and there are many), ensuring the risk profile matches your own, income flexibility, accessibility etc. At first glance the benefits may only be small for any one aspect. However, the cumulative effect of ensuring all elements are maximized (and repeated each tax year if relevant) can be significant. To use an analogy, when Bradley
Wiggins won the Tour de France his coach Sir David Brailsford explained it was the accumulation of marginal gains that made him better. In other words, every key core element was done to the maximum and the accumulation of each of the small gains resulted in large gains. When spring cleaning your portfolio it is a good mantra to follow.

To look at her, it’s very hard to believe that Jean Malkin is in her 70th year but that she is and she’s decided to celebrate it by doing something which will ultimately help others. Along with the support of husband, Mick, Jean is going to swim 70 lakes and tarns before the big day on 14th October. Jean has already completed her first swim. On 1st January, on a beautiful clear day when the temperature was just about above freezing Jean plunged into the icy water at Simpson Ground above Staveley in Cartmel, a favourite swimming place for Jean, her daughters and grandchildren but not usually in the middle of Winter! Jean intends to do one a week
in Winter and a lot more in Summer.

PTA style committee wanted As has been well documented in this paper, the future of Victoria Hall is under threat and, despite a well-attended meeting and many good ideas and suggestions being put forward, what the ‘Vic’ needs is a pro-active committee to drive it all forward. Using the ethos of a PTA (Parent Teacher Association) the Vic needs an FVA (Friends of Victoria Hall Association) made up of people who have the skills to make a real difference. Victoria Hall Manager, Sally Haines, will be there for guidance but Sally has a very busy and demanding job
and can’t run the committee herself. What is needed is someone with great organisational and people skills to chair the committee, a secretary, a treasurer along with someone with a flair for PR and event management. Victoria Hall was discussed under item 15 on the agenda and Councillor Peter Endsor reported back on an evening of festive carols, music and readings, organised and hosted by Victoria Hall manager, Sally Haines. Councillor Endsor praised Sally for all her hard work, not just for that evening (15th December) but for all the effort she puts in throughout the year which goes above and way beyond anything which is expected of her. The other Councillors were all in full agreement. Another thank you went to the Lengthsman, John Gilmore. On Christmas Day, the toilets at the lido were broken into and a lot of mess and damage caused. However, no money was taken.
Councillors thanked John for responding very quickly and for managing to get the facility open again on Boxing Day.
Item 8 included the Budget for 2017 -18. It was resolved, by five votes to one, to increase the precept so the Council can continue to run facilities and maintain the Victoria Hall. The Precept is the amount of money that the Town Council asks South Lakeland District Council to collect as part of the Council Tax demand. The effect on Council Tax bills in Grange will be that the section raised for the Town Council will increase by 5.8%. This means that a Band D household will pay an extra 36p a month.
On 24th January, South Lakeland District Council will inform Grange Town Council if an election is required in respect of the Casual Vacancy which came as a result of the resignation of Judith Shapland. The next meeting will take place in Victoria Hall at 7pm on Monday 13th February.

kerbside collections, but it will take several days to complete. “If anyone hasn’t received a blue bag by the end of January and thinks they should have got one then please give us a call and we will arrange for one to be sent out.’’ County Councillor Bill Wearing told Grange Now: “I’m looking forward to making use of this service and there’s no doubt many residents in our area will benefit. My only wish is that we could have had it sooner!” Guide’s Lot and Berners Close recycling sites are still open for refuse, clothes and shoe donations and carrier bags etc.

Electric Bike Network Grange Now (sister paper to Dalton & Ulverston Now) is delighted to be appointed as a charge point for the new and exciting initiative – the Electric Bike Network for Morecambe Bay. The network will be up and running later in the spring of 2017 and should encourage more visitors to the area. The future, for both the Electric Bike Network, and increased cycling tourism in the area looks hugely positive and should be of benefit to many local businesses. Now I know you are asking yourself...how is someone going to carry their bike up
to the Grange/Ulverston Now office (on Main Street in Grange) to charge their battery? We did consider installing a lift or perhaps long wires hanging from the windows, but it turns out that the battery on an electric bike can be removed and easily brought in for charging. This leaves the owner some time to visit the local cafes and shops, before returning fully recharged! Now where do I put that puncture repair kit? One very young lady said it was nice to not be invisible and many were overwhelmed by all the items they were given. At the end of a day which I will never forget, we gave the remaining Christmas bags to two homeless shelters. I can’t thank everyone enough and I will continue to give each time I visit a city now.

I hope you are all enjoying your new recycling bags and getting used to putting them out regularly for collection from your door rather than having to pack your rubbish into the car and drive it along to the old recycling centre. I know that having to sort through your rubbish and put it all into different containers is a bit more work than simply putting it all in a bag and heaving it into your grey bin. But please trust me it really is worth it. Last year the amount of recycled waste collected by South Lakeland District Council was at the highest level ever and with the addition of plastic and cardboard to the list of things that they will collect from outside your door I am fairly confident that this year will be even better still. We are getting very close to the point where we can claim that more waste here is being recycled than put into landfill with the figure standing at 47% recycled last year, up from 43% the year before. I do know, however, that this success can sometimes bring its frustrations when the council needs to reschedule deliveries because their wagons are not big enough to take all of the rubbish that you are putting out for them to collect. So please bear with them, especially at these early stages and take any delays as a sign that you are doing a brilliant job at avoiding sending unnecessary stuff to landfill. It is amazing what some of the things you put in the recycling end up being used for. In Cumbria our council is the first one in the
country to trial using recycled plastic in the resurfacing of roads. Apparently mixing the plastic with the other stuff they use to resurface makes the surface last longer and reduces the carbon footprint. So think about that when you put out your bag full of plastic bottles and tins, you could even be doing your bit to reduce the potholes in our roads! On other issues. I am continuing to press our local hospital trust to provide an Urgent Care Centre at Kendal. Last year we saw a 15% increase in the number of people going to A&E and clearly at times the hospital in Lancaster simply couldn’t cope. We saw several occasions during December when ambulances had to wait more than 2 hours to deliver their patient into the hospital. This is clearly unacceptable. What worries me most is that under the Government’s current plans our local health service needs to find over half a billion of savings over the next four years. That is a frighteningly large amount of money particularly when all we see is demand rising. Finally, I was really pleased that Northern Rail decided to reintroduce their discounted season tickets for students aged between 16 and 18. The additional costs were causing great difficulties for parents not just around Grange but also in Windermere and Staveley where many students also need to use Northern to get to school or college. Let’s just hope that 2017 brings us even more positive news. Thanks Tim

County Matters
At our January meeting of the Full County Council I raised the issue of Unitary Governance for the whole area of Cumbria. This would involve removing the confusing system we have at present of six Districts and one County Authority. It would provide all the services from housing, social care, children’s services, transport and highways plus a raft of other services under one Council, leaving the Parish Councils alone to do their local work. This would be a major reorganisation but from a recent report from Ernest Young the Accountancy firm this would result in a saving of between 50 to 80 million pounds over a five year period. I have been an advocate for this for some time and will keep on pressing all colleagues from all Councils to bite the bullet and make the decision to help simplify our Council system and make

The Mayoral chain has so far had no 2017 outings, though the period just before Christmas was fairly busy, firstly with an invitation to the very well attended Flower Arranger’s Christmas Gala where we were taken through the construction of an amazing array of Christmas themed floral displays. This was followed a few days later by the Service of Nine Lessons and Carols at St Paul’s Church where the choir excelled itself. Looking forward into the New Year I await the results of SLDC’s Lido Consultation which I really hope will bring a sensible and affordable answer to the Lido conundrum, a result which brings
it easier for residents to access all services in a more timely and efficient way. I have just had a reminder from our Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service asking us all to test our smoke detectors every month.Smoke detectors do save lives and it only takes a few minutes each month to check them. At present the County Council Scrutiny Board is looking at the provision of Extra Care Housing in the County. This is housing which meets the requirements of those who do not need high – level residential/nursing care over the next decade. The Strategy is to work with partner councils, developers and housing partners to introduce more schemes where people have their own accommodation rather than residential care or shared housing. Capturing the true meaning of the season ‘Friends at Christmas’ are delighted to report that 45 residents of Grange joined together for a meal on Christmas Day at Fishover-Chips. Although not our usual venue we were treated to the usual high quality full Christmas turkey dinner with all the trimmings. The meal was expertly cooked for the second year running by Robert and Sharon Sanbrook and we are most grateful. We are also grateful to Andy Webb for providing excellent musical accompaniment during the day. Planning for this event starts in January and activity begins in earnest in September. We have a dedicated team of volunteers who year after year work tirelessly over many months to bring the event together. For Christmas 2016 we were delighted to have
help from younger members of the community including Maisy Lawton-Thompson who made name badges and William Mitchell Parr. Maisy and William also helped Santa hand out gifts on the day. Our team of volunteers take on various other roles on Christmas Day including collecting guests, preparing and serving food, washing up and organising entertainment. None of this could happen without the contributions we receive on the day and the support of businesses and individuals in Grange who have generously provided cash and gifts of food and other services over the last 10 years. Poached Eggs with Toasted Ciabattas and Caramelised Pancetta We have multi-talented members of staff here at Low Sizergh Barn and Hannah Storton is no exception. Look out for her working in the milking parlour and in the farm shop, which proudly stocks eggs from her flock/flush/paddling/raft of ducks (please choose your favourite collective noun - and yes, we did have to Google them).
Hannah’s duck eggs have inspired our recipe for this month, which is a variation on one featured in Peter Sidwell’s Simply Good Taste (available in the farm shop Shippon, £14.99). Ingredients 2 tbsp vinegar 8 duck eggs Butter 4 Ciabattas, toasted ground pepper
8 rashers of pancetta or streaky bacon
2 tsp honey or icing sugar Method
1. Grill the pancetta until it is crisp, then brush with a little honey or dust with icing sugar. Place in the top oven to keep warm.
2. To poach the eggs, bring the saucepan of salted water to the boil and add the vinegar. Reduce the heat until the water is just bubbling and stir with a spoon to create a whirlpool motion. 3. Crack the eggs into a small bowl so you can slide them into the water rather than dropping them in. 4. Cook for four minutes then remove the poached eggs with a slotted spoon.
5. To serve, butter the toasted ciabattas and top with the pancetta and poached eggs. Mill a little black pepper on top and serve.

Funding available for students Students being educated for the farming, forestry and the horticultural industry are being encouraged to apply for funding.
The Swales Trust Fund, which is administered by Cumbria Community Foundation, provides awards up to £1,000 to support students who are working towards land- based qualifications. Examples of activities supported include study materials, specialist equipment and exceptional study travel costs. Students who are studying in Cumbria will be given priority. Individuals who are living in Cumbria but are studying outside the county at appropriate institutions, will also be considered. There are no age restrictions on who can apply.
In the previous round of funding, one applicant received funding towards specialist equipment and clothing required for an agriculture diploma at Newton Rigg College.
Ellen Clements, Grants Officer at Cumbria Community Foundation said: “We’re very proud to be managing the Swales Trust, which helps young people who wish to pursue a career in the landbased sector. Given the rurality of Cumbria, it is essential that we invest in our future farmers, foresters and landscapers.”

More news from across the pond Grange Now recently reported on the 23 new ducks which were introduced to Grange Duck Pond throughout 2016. To follow on from that, volunteer, Tom Ross, has put together some figures which show what was, and what is estimated to be spent, throughout 2017. Total amount received from the donation pillar was £1664 and out of that, £1205 was spent on new ducks, £303 on floating pellet duck food and £35 worth of miscellaneous costs.
Tom told Grange Now, “Sadly, five ducks have died (monetary loss of £200) some of them are through feeding the ducks bread, and at least six ducks have been stolen,

GROWN WITH RANDOM LOVE
In February, there’s a sniff of spring in the air but we’re not out of the wintry woods yet. Harvest any left over brassicas you might have still clinging on and try and clear any remaining beds. If you haven’t mulched these, do it now, and it’s also probably a good time to throw any other supplements (lime, fish blood bone, etc) you use onto your beds (except wood ash which will be washed away).
If you want to take advantage of any sun that there is, you can cover the beds with black plastic sheeting to try and warm the soil a little more quickly but take care not to let rain pool on them as this will compact the soil underneath. At home, you can begin populating your window sills with seedlings of broad beans, leeks and lettuces. As for tomatoes, I tend to get my best results from the cherry varieties and Sungold is my absolute favourite. Tomatoes and Chilli peppers benefit
greatly from an early start, the longer their season the longer they get to fully ripen.
I’m going all out for lettuce this year. I recently visited a fruit and vegetable market in France on holiday and was amazed at the number of different textures, colours and flavours of the varieties on offer some of which are as beautiful as any flower. Lollo rosso, Cos, Batavia, Escarole and Butterhead sound like glamorous and much more favourable destinations compared than a boring old Iceberg. Sow lettuces in seed trays indoors and plant out when they have couple of pairs of true leaves, they don’t need full sun but a decent bit of room and regular watering so they don’t bolt. You could try growing them in between well spaced rows of broad beans.
The ability to reproduce something like this hopefully is one of the great things about growing your own, I usually also grow Tomatilloes (at odds with the way it sounds these more like physalis or Chinese lanterns than tomatoes, each one growing inside a papery husk) and Padron peppers (a naturally occurring form of Russian roulette where one in ten of these, usually exceptionally mild mannered chilli peppers, being devilishly super spicy) every year as kind of living souvenirs.

We’re delighted to say that our artist of the month this month is the extremely talented, David Kay. Many of you will have seen David perform locally but if you haven’t, you really should. I know you live locally, are you Grange district, born and bred? Do you have siblings? I’ve lived in Cark-in-Cartmel all my life (20 years) but I was actually born in Lancaster so not quite born, bred and buttered. I love living around here, there’s a lot of beautiful places in the area that mean a lot to me and I forget how lucky I am to live here sometimes. I have one brother who is two years my senior; he’s a primary teacher and lives in Bolton now, so it’s always nice when he comes home for a while. We’re very close and he’s one of my best mates too so that’s nice, I know a lot of brothers fight but we’ve grown out of that now I like to think. When did your love of music start? Are other members of your family musical? I can’t really remember a time when I wasn’t listening to music, I’ve been lucky enough to have been brought up in a house where music always seems to be playing. I distinctly remember having an early love for The Beatles; me and my brother used to sing Yellow Submarine and Can’t Buy Me Love with my Dad when we were very young. Both my parents have an awesome music taste, which is where I’ve picked up some of my favourite artists from, particularly Jackson Browne and James Taylor from my Mum and The Jam and Damien Rice from my Dad. My

brother is into some great music too and is an extremely talented bass guitarist. Which instruments do you play and are you self-taught? I play guitar, mainly acoustic nowadays, but I started with electric. I sing, play harmonica, a little bit of bass and I’m currently trying to learn the piano (New Year’s resolution) but that’s still in its very early stages so there’s still time to burn our piano and give up completely - it seems to be going okay at the minute. I’ve had guitar lessons through school and college from Richard Tordoff, Paddy Garrigan and Steve Porrit, all of whom are great musicians and have been a great help. I’ve not had lessons for years now and just learn things myself; writing my own music seems to help a lot. When and where was your first gig? My first gig was on New Year’s Eve of 2012 at The Engine Inn in Cark. It was a nice night filled with a bunch of friends and family. I played with my brother on bass that night which was fun too. I’ve since played over two-hundred gigs of my own material which include tours around the UK and a tour in Europe, playing in Germany, Czech Republic and Vienna back in June 2016 with my mate and fellow singer/songwriter Joe McCorriston. I’m itching to get touring again… What inspires you, and/or what has inspired you when writing songs? I can get inspired by anything depending on the mood I’m in. I love to write songs about people and relationships between them, that’s something that’s always
interested me greatly. I make up a lot of characters in my songs or exaggerate characteristics of people I already know to make new characters. I’ve just finished writing a new EP that follows a relationship between two fictional characters and that’s been a lot of fun to write. I’m inspired a lot by the music of Billy Bragg because I think he’s the master of writing songs about everything and nothing. Some of his music is incredibly powerful and political, but then other times he writes about the simplest things in life. He’s the kind of writer that I reckon could write an amazing song about literally anything and that’s the kind of songwriter I aspire to be like. What have you got planned for this year? This year I want to write and play as much as possible, continuing to try and get more and more people to hear my stuff. I’m currently recording a brand new EP that I’ve mentioned and I’m really excited about releasing that because it’s totally different to the music I’ve released previously and I believe it to be the best stuff I’ve written, musically and lyrically. I’m going to try and do more touring around the UK and hopefully do a few full-band gigs; I’ve got the foundations of a band together so it’s just a case of rehearsing and booking the gigs now. I feel like at the end of 2016 I relaxed a bit on the music front due to other commitments, but I’m eager to start writing, playing and promoting again now. Levens Choir named as finalists In the second Cumbria Life Culture Awards, Levens Choir are one of five choirs who have been nominated for ‘Choir of the Year’. The awards presentation takes place on Friday February 3 at Theatre by the Lake, Keswick, from 7.30pm and will be hosted by Stuart Maconie. Former Artist of the Month, Jess Gillam will be performing. Organ Recital with Peter Crompton
On Saturday 4th March, Peter Crompton is giving an organ recital at Cartmel Priory with all proceeds going to Christian Aid.
Peter received the honorary title of Organist Emeritus on his retirement as Director of Music at the Royal Hospital School, where he presided over the magnificent four manual organ of the cathedral sized chapel for nearly forty years. As a recitalist and accompanist, Peter has appeared at many major venues including St Paul’s Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, Liverpool Cathedral and the Royal Albert Hall, where he has played the mighty Willis organ for the Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance for twenty years! It is broadcast on BBC television and radio and attended by Her Majesty the Queen and other members of the Royal Family as well as the Prime Minister and other leading members of the government.
He has also performed at many leading concert venues and cathedrals throughout this country and abroad. Peter has also broadcast on BBC Radio 2 & 3 and has made several highly acclaimed recordings on the organ of the Royal Hospital School. The latest entitled ‘Encore’ on the Regent label will be available on the night of the recital. Peter was also recently the subject of the popular ITV programme ‘Surprise, Surprise’ playing the iconic Wurlitzer organ in the Tower Ballroom in Blackpool. Recent recitals have included the Organ Festival at St Edmundsbury Cathedral, the Moot Hall in Colchester and the Corn Exchange, Ipswich and future recitals include the Victoria Hall, Hanley, the Chapel of the Royal Hospital School and Westminster Cathedral. This romantic show has not yet been performed in Grange, and has some incredible players, some new and others who are tried and tested! ‘Some enchanted evening’, sung by Emile (Steve Low) to Nellie Forbush (Eleanor Font – Tom Gray’s sister) will carry you up into the clouds that surround the magical island of Bali Hai, an island full of native girls, french girls, marines, sailors and seabees, who remind us that ‘There is nothing like a dame’, and also singing about the irrepressible “Bloody Mary” (Ann Heap) and her beautiful
daughter Liat (Daisy Skyrme). Whilst Lieutenant Cable (Simon McCleery) uses is lovely tenor voice to tell of his love for Liat in ‘Younger than Springtime’. The nurses try to help Nellie, ‘Wash that man right out of her hair’, but to no avail.
New faces, Mark Payne and Alistair Rae join with Mick Malkin to complicate the action until a happy ending beckons with the adorable children – Amos Rand and Alice Payne, Nerissa Blatchley and Max Burrow bring a tear of happiness with “Dites mois” as this happy show climaxes. Jane Thedham and Jean Malkin continue their winning formula from last year’s show ‘Annie’ as Musical Director and

Two local lasses release very different books! This month, Grange Now was contacted by two young ladies with a connection to the area, who have each published their debut books.
Firstly, Justine Atkinson contacted us about her book ‘Cartmel Characters - Modern Life in a Medieval Village’. The book provides an insightful account of the array of colourful characters that reside within the village; from world-renowned Michelin star chef Simon Rogan, to a once surgeon to the Royal family, the village dog, founders of the famous Cartmel Sticky Toffee pudding, a local landlord, a young lady who rears birds of prey, and most importantly the longstanding residents of the village. Grange Drama Grapevine The reading of Blithe Spirit, an improbable farce written by Noel Coward heads Grange Drama’s Spring Play reading programme and there is talk that Hay Fever will follow in the summer! Grange Drama first staged Blithe Spirit at the Cumbria Grand Hotel in 1990 and record audiences attended and they witnessed a never to be forgotten delivery by Eve Baynes of Madame Arcati’s famous line - “Is there anybody there?” This role is one many actors still dream of performing and the next best thing is to come along and read the part in this well known and highly improbable farce. 2017 has well and truly begun now but February can often feel very wintry and cold. Please remember that a warm welcome awaits at all our services. This includes our joint services with our Methodist friends, second Sunday of the month at the URC and third Sunday at the Methodist Church.
Our Women’s Guild continue their sessions on Wednesday afternoons at 2.30pm, to which everybody is welcome. Rev’d Jo Rand leads a Devotional meeting on 1st February, while on 8th February there is a games afternoon. On 15th February Alison Adam is speaking and on the 22nd, Zelma Hallett’s talk is entitled ‘I Remember’. As part of the Cartmel Peninsula Team ministry, we began the new year on January 1st with a very meaningful service of Holy Communion at St Paul’s Church, Grange. This was a joint service for all the churches in the team and we look forward to working more closely together in the coming year. The following week at St Mary’s we hosted a very successful curry night which included a presentation about the work of ‘Children of Hope’ in Uganda – a charity which seeks to provide education and health care as a means of empowering orphans and other children from impoverished families with

Christmas was a wonderful time of diverse services, something for everyone, with the Boarbank Advent Carol Service in a beautiful setting, the Grange CE Primary School nursery nativity with lots of ‘oohs and aahs’, traditional singing and words at the Carol Services at both Fell Church and St Paul’s, Christingle with crib, lights and candles, special Communion services on Christmas Eve and
hope for their future. One of our members is part of a short term team of medics and others who are visiting Uganda this month and we look forward to an update on their return. The proceeds from the curry night, together with a recent sponsored 40 mile bicycle ride by one of our church
families, raised just over £1,000 for this work.

As usual, we had pleasure in supporting a range of charities through our Christmas services including The Children’s Society and Water Aid.
We now look forward to Cake and Candlemas, a service by candlelight, at 3.30pm on Sunday 5th February. Cake services started in 2016 and have been very successful with all generations. They are short, lively and everyone is invited to take part. At our after school event on 2nd February we will be making candles to use in the service – and we will have enough for everyone! So come along to the service on 5th and enjoy the warmest of welcomes.

The music and singing was superb; costumes were creative and at times, wonderfully amusing; acting by the main characters showed them to be true thespians; stagecraft was evident with timely entrances and exits and the children shepherded by their Headteacher, Teacher and School Governor, flouting their excellent sheep masks, were delightful!All in all a real success and a very entertaining performance. To say this was just a rehearsal was astounding!Could this become an annual treat? Let’s hope so!
New Year’s Day was celebrated as a Cartmel Peninsula Team service, led by Rev’d Rachel Stavert in St Paul’s. About 120 people attended and greatly enjoyed this opportunity to worship together.

Toast Church at Grange Methodist Church did a modern presentation of the Nativity story. Martha, studio presenter from ‘Bethlehem Today’, was in contact with Amos, a roving reported, delayed by a traffic jam. He was able to interview some bystanders, (members of the congregation), shepherds, the innkeeper’s wife, and the kings, travelling from the East. This was
interspersed with appropriate carols, new and old. Music was provided by guitars, viola, cello and piano, and Jo, our minister, reminded us of the truth of the story and the true meaning of Christmas.
In the evening, children from Grange and District, all involved in the Grange Pantomime, presented a carol service, where the leader, Mick Malkin, went through the alphabet, bringing

out significant words to do with Christmas. Members of the congregation, appointed as shepherds, wise men and angels, had calls when their roles were mentioned. Again, Jo closed the service with thoughts of Christmas and prayers. The children and congregation then tucked into a delicious buffet spread, provided as a Jacob’s Join, by parents and friends. Wishing everyone a very Happy New Year.
Better Care Together is an initiative that brings together local people with health and care staff from the NHS and Local Government. SOCIETY ROUND-UP Allithwaite & Cartmel WI At the first meeting of 2017 , members were welcomed and wished a Happy New Year by the President. Following the business, the speaker, Ken Taylor was introduced and gave a fascinating talk about a holiday in Peru. As this was predominantly a bird watching trip, he showed some wonderful shots of the very brightly coloured native species. The journeys within Peru were hair raising but more than worthwhile as his slides so clearly showed. Machu Picchu was a highlight of the trip and he gave a wonderful photographic account of its discovery. The next meeting will be Tuesday February 7th. Grange Soroptimists Club members met early in January for a business meeting. Singing for Memory restarted on 12th January and will be held weekly on a Thursday morning at Allithwaite Community Centre except for half term. At the present time, we are working in the Ornamental gardens at the end of the pond by the sluice gate, with the agreement of SLDC, cutting back overgrown shrubs, brambles and tree pruning. Continental Landscaping is assisting by chipping the debris so that it can be used as mulch on the shrub beds. We have also put in a request to SLDC for repairs to be done to cracked paths and collapsed pond edges during the next financial year. LOWER HOLKER WI At our December meeting we spent a relaxing afternoon making Christmas decorations whilst enjoying far too many Christmassy refreshments (don’t mention the diet). GRANGE PROBUS CLUB On Monday 9th January 2017 a mixed audience of Grange Probus members were entertained to an informative talk by Bob Mathews on Hugh Lowther the 5th Earl of Lonsdale. Known as the Yellow Earl for his penchant for the colour, the earl led an extravagant, some might say dissolute, lifestyle which ultimately led to the collapse of the family fortune. Nonetheless he was a world renowned sportsman and explorer and is remembered among many things for donating the original Lonsdale belts for boxing and as the founder of the Automobile Association. Bob encouraged all to visit Lowther Castle which is the subject of significant investment particularly on renovating its gardens. PROBUS is a club for retired men and women of the area to get together once a month to chat, have coffee and enjoy a talk on a wide range of topics from invited speakers. The Club meets on the second Monday of each month in the Netherwood Hotel. We will be crafting away for the various shows in the summer months, then baking and jamming for the Edwardian Festival and treasure-hunting around the town to name but a few things. Grange Lecture Society On 10th January photographer Keith Holmes returned to talk about the villas and gardens of Lake Como in Northern Italy. His lecture, while also taking in the city of Como and the picturesque small towns around the lake, concentrated, with the aid of some stunning photography, on the historic lakeside villas, most of them still in fine condition, and their colourful gardens full of exotic plants and trees. Starting with the Villa d’Este, now a famous luxury hotel, Keith’s photographs featured some of his favourites, among them the Villas Melzi and Balbianello, all pictured against a backdrop of mountains and lake. He talked about their history, architecture and the various layouts of the gardens, and mentioned some of the famous people who have lived in them. Keith’s lecture will have tempted many of his listeners to visit (or revisit) the area. On 7th February, in an illustrated lecture entitled ‘Storm Chaser’, Tom Lynch, who goes in pursuit of violent storms as a hobby, shares his experiences of the area known as Tornado Alley in the midwest of America, and on 14th February historian Peter Warwick returns to talk about Captain James Cook.

Witherslack WI Ann Walshaw chaired the January meeting, attended by 18 members.The £10 challenge quiz raised a good deal of money & Jackie Ratcliffe won 1st prize. Final arrangement were made for the late Christmas dinner on January 24th. The 6 resolutions for the AGM were read through and 3 were chosen by a show of hands. Competition winners for the last year were: 1st Sarah Bradley 2nd Dorothy Ainsworth 3rd Jean Hudson. The speaker Claire Louise Chapman spoke with great enthusiasm about the mental health charity “Growing Well” which is based at Low Sizergh Farm on a 6 acre site.”Volunteers” in need of some support can come one day a week and help in the growing of 5 tons a year of organic vegetables.These are sold to Crop Sharers who commit to taking a bag every week for a year.The paid staff are professional mental health experts.Many people are helped by this gentle form of therapy and gain confidence to get on with their lives. Mothers and Others Members had several festive meetings in the run up to Christmas. November 29th - A pottery demonstration by Ken Lumb produced a Christmas tea light holder and members did their very best to produce an identical one. December 6th - A cookery demonstration by Julie Woodburn provided savoury and sweet items which were sampled and enjoyed. The evening ended with our 3M’s: meringues, mince pies and mulled wine. December 13th - Some members attended the Cartmel and District Flower Club’s annual gala. The flower arranger, Alison Cooper, demonstrated her art with some fabulous arrangements to celebrate Christmas. On 10th January a bingo evening and Jacob’s join supper was enjoyed by all.

Builders will now start the dismantling of the chimneys mid January. The main hall is to be rewired this week and the kitchen was rewired in December, all of these undertakings would have not been possible without the generosity of you good folk. As the new year progresses we hope to have a new kitchen installed (which would have been done but for the trouble with the chimneys taking priority), so please all keep supporting all the activities the hall provides . On 25 January we welcome Colin Milner who was formerly Head Teacher of Grange-over -Sands Primary School. Appropriately his talk is titled, ‘Reflections of a Head Teacher’.
Our own Dr Richard Fell will be our speaker on 1 February. His subject is, ‘Expensive Scare’. Knowing Richard as a Cartmel Character and as a man of one thousand and one stories we look forward with anticipation to this one. On 9 February, the Club has arranged a social lunch at Kendal College of Education’s Catering Department. We hope to support the students and give them an opportunity to showcase their culinary skills. On 15 February the Club will be testing their grey matter in the form of an inter-committee quiz to be held at The Pheasant Inn Allithwaite. Grange and District U3A The 2017 general meeting programme got off to a splendid start with “ Music in Nature” presented by Edward Lawton. A very varied programme follows throughout the year at 10.15 am on the third Tuesday of the month at the Victoria Hall except in July when we will have our summer event. On 21st February Sophia and Brian Fuller will visit us again with one of their outstanding slide presentations – this time “Norway Nature”. The Victoria Hall was the venue for our Burns Night Supper which was accompanied by a feast of entertainment. Whilst members enjoyed the traditional fare, a display put together by our Digital Photography Group portrayed the mountains, lochs and valleys of Scotland with towns, castles and monuments along with words from Burn’s poems. We learnt about the Highland and Border pipes with Duncan and Elisabeth Bell and enjoyed listening to their songs and the pipes and fiddle. There were recitations all followed by dancing to the music of the Sands Band. Cartmel and District Flower Club On Monday 16th January members met for a ‘Dabble Day’ and we made felt brooches, paper flowers and decorated containers which will be used for the next meeting on Monday 20th February. This is when we will celebrate the club’s 50th anniversary and when we welcome Carol Philpot’s ‘Travellers Tales’ in Cartmel village hall at 2 pm. This is also subscription day. We hope it will be a memorable meeting for our Golden Anniversary. Grange Lions The Lions were very active in the run up to Christmas being out and about with the sleigh and holding a well-attended coffee morning in Flookburgh Village Hall. The Village Hall event raised over £400 which we will use to support local causes and individuals and we raised over £1,000 with the sleigh in conjunction with local groups. We would like to offer our sincere thanks to all those who supported us over this period. We’d like to remind you that every penny raised goes to the events we support as each Lion member pays a subscription which covers all administration costs. We have also sent some money to an orphanage in Kenya to pay the education costs of some young people who otherwise would not be able to attend school. Our social whirl continues with a weekend away in Blackpool at the end of January. The Lions are accompanied by a few friends and have had an excellent time in previous years. We are a small and very focused team who enjoy each other’s company and would welcome with open arms anyone who would like to join in with our activities. Lawrie Woodley on ‘Growing old’ (part 2) Last month, we ran the first part of an article written by Grange resident, Lawrie Woodley, on ‘growing old’ from a male point of view. Men are very often not keen to discuss their health or feelings on the matter and we are very grateful to Lawrie for writing this article for us. This month he concentrates on eyesight and exercise. Eyesight will, probably, have deteriorated to the point of needing glasses much earlier in life as will have loss of hair. This really is down to luck with one’s genes as some people will keep their hair and their good vision much later in life than others. Those who now have glasses will, not unexpectedly, have a change in prescription as time goes by. All of these signs are to be anticipated with advancing age and are quite easily accommodated but it is the more serious ones that mustn’t be ignored. Is one’s breathlessness due to overweight or lack of physical exercise or is it the early indication of heart trouble? Is loss of balance (and, in some cases subsequent loss of confidence due to getting older) the precursor to something more sinister? This is where there is a need to discuss matters with someone else. Initially it could be one’s wife who can, perhaps, give a cogent explanation for any concerns and, at the same time, reassure. However, this may be where the idea that a GP should be consulted could arise. At the same time there’s someone who’s looking out for you and trying to identify how serious your concerns are – be it your wife or GP. Unless your concerns are unfounded and there’s nothing to worry about, often the GP’s remedy can be a course of medication. Invariably, once this course is adopted it will be for the rest of one’s life and then another problem can rear its head. This can either be that the body has an adverse reaction to the tablets etc. and causes unwanted side effects or that they’re not doing the job. In the first case further medication may be prescribed to counter these side effects or,in the second case, the GP will use the dreaded words ‘Let’s try something else’. Whichever way, you’re hooked! On the positive side, many of the conditions presented by old age can be counteracted by surgery. With heart problems this can be by way of Pacemakers, Stents, By-passes or replacement parts. With dodgy knees or hips, replacement or corrective surgery is almost ‘run of the mill’ and can be carried out until quite late in life.
Another aspect of growing older is that one’s reactions slow down but this can be so gradual that it’s not noticed until a problem occurs. How many times have we chided the slow driver ahead when we finally overtake them to find out that it’s an older person? It could be that they are simply unaware that they’re going too slowly or that they’re just driving within their capability of taking any evasive action should a problem arise. It could, of course, be that, unlike you, they’re in no particular hurry to get anywhere! Any road traffic accident where it’s reported that one of the drivers is 75+ will invariably evoke the response, ‘They shouldn’t be on the road at their age!’ But when it comes to you, you’re reluctant to give up your independence and that’s when someone else has to make the decision for you. It’s either going to be, again, your GP, family members or, in the worst case scenario, the Authorities. The sad fact of life is that when your licence is taken away you’re probably going to have to visit the doctor or hospital more often, anyway; you now have to rely on fairly basic public transport or outside bodies such as Council Community Transport Schemes. It just makes your frustration that much more infuriating. Exercise is important at any time, but more so as one ages. The inability to drive could be offset by being able to walk to a place you may have driven to before. This may be just ensuring you can walk to the nearest bus stop or it may be walking into town to do some light shopping. That house you bought when you were young and had such a lovely view may now be a nightmare when you have to get back up the hill to get home. Regular exercise before then will help to reduce that worry. It could be worthwhile joining a local gym. Not because you’re going to run the London Marathon or lift heavy weights etc., but because you can walk on a treadmill in all weathers and just get off when it suits. You’re not stranded out on a walk in the locality if you do get into difficulty and you have to get home; if you do feel you are in any trouble in the gym there will be a supervisor who will be able to help. There are also static bikes that you can use which are a non-impact form of exercise and don’t involve worrying about road traffic; again, you can dismount when you feel you need to. There are, of course, ailments that come with ageing against which we seem to have no defence, e.g. Cancer, Dementia or Parkinson’s Disease and these must, inevitably be excluded from any suggestion of prevention by exercise etc.

The little bus service passes the new Medical Centre [Grange] about every two hours. This is not much help if you cannot walk that far and have no alternative transport. Giving up your car is a huge decision to make. It would be easier if you could rely on local transport when you needed it. SLDC have to follow certain guidelines of course, before a taxi licence can be issued. However, the stringent route planning knowledge required might be putting someone applying for a licence. Last month’s Grange Now reported that I had resigned from the Town Council, so I would like to inform readers that it was for two reasons which I said at the time.
I could not agree with six others on the Town Council to give the franchise of running the recreation area on the promenade to a firm for five years rent free, and secondly I did not agree with the proposal to increase the Council Tax. Judith Shapland
May I enlighten residents in view of the comments made at December’s meeting of the Town Council and reported in Grange Now, by 2 cycling enthusiasts for the promenade to be designated as part of the Morecambe Bay Cycleway with a stated 78% of residents in support.
Despite the SLDC on- line survey, compiled by Morecambe Bay Partnership with the questions heavily weighted to produce the desired result and aggressively promoted to cyclists to respond, only 248 replied, the majority not residents.
These are the facts, extracted from a SLDC on line survey report, just 95 were from the LA11 postcode area, 59 were cyclists. Considering the thousands of residents in the area who use the promenade, to state 78% of residents supported the inclusion of the Promenade as a listed route is misleading.

SCHOOL REPORT A joint performance with The Priory Church Choir of ‘Rock Nativity’ on Sunday 8th January had us celebrating Epiphany in true style. This was certainly a whole community event in which the Headteacher, a teacher and Governor from school played the shepherds and the children, their sheep. The choir played a vast array of other roles from Mary and Joseph to Angel Gabriel and Herod. There was a large audience of around 150 people and the experience for the children of performing in live theatre, with Musical Director, Producer and Choir was superb!
As Spring approaches, we have many exciting trips and events planned. We are working on the Bright Stars Competition with our ‘business partner’ Cartmel Racecourse. This seeks to encourage entrepreneurial skills, giving

We have begun to discuss how courage takes bravery and perseverance, reflecting on the first time we tried to ride a bike. We have watched and been amazed by the bike skills of Danny McAskill. This has inspired us to want to try new sports, musical instruments and other experiences in school this term, showing the

Grange Primary The children at Grange School would like to thank St Paul’s Church for welcoming them to church on the last day of term and helping to make the Nursery Class Nativity so special.
There was a sense of anticipation when the candles along the isle were lit and the children, who were watched by their friends and families, made their way to the front to create the tableau. Music was provided by pupils in the school choir and the school recorder band. The spring term has started well and we have already competed in the local Cross Country event at Casterton School, where one pupil was

selected to represent us at the Championship Cross Country. The children in KS2 are looking forward to taking part in Young Voices in Manchester on 10th February. Children from all over the North West will
be joining together to be part of the largest children’s choir on the planet. At the Manchester Arena there will be up to 8,000 young people creating an amazing sound and brilliant atmosphere!

The festive season at Cartmel Priory
The Cartmel Priory School Christmas Concert took place on 15 December. There were accomplished musical performances and readings from individuals and groups of students, including a beautiful solo performance at the beginning of the carol Once in Royal David’s City by Lydia D, Amy S singing ‘Yours’ by Ella Henderson, Andrew B playing pieces by Bach and Joplin on the Saxophone, ‘Away in a Manger’ sung by Martha R accompanied on flute by Joe W and Suzannah B on saxophone,and Lewis B on piano playing his own interpretation ‘Butterflies and Hurricances, Caves, Fragments’. The audience also had the opportunity to sing carols accompanied by the school band, comprising both pupils and teaching staff, creating much seasonal jollity.It is only possible to detail a small number of performances but every pupil should be proud of their confident and skilful singing and the music played. Thank you to everyone that came along to support the Christmas Concert, which we hope will become an annual event. Emily C, Jess H and Charlie E were the winners of the Cartmel Priory School Christmas Gingerbread House Competition. In total, 28 pupils took part, including GCSE pupils and lunchtime club members from Years 8 & 9. All entries were fantastic, showing great variety, skill and innovative use of ingredients. New Beginnings at Flookburgh school
Storytime/Rhymetime for pre-school children is on Thursday mornings from 10.30 am on the 2nd, 9th & 16th February (not on 23rd which is Half Term). Parents, grandparents and carers are welcome to come along with their little ones for half an hour of stories and rhymes.
As well as welcoming in 2017 at Flookburgh we also welcomed our new nursery children into school. It hasn’t taken long for them to settle in and begin enjoying all that our fabulous nursery has to offer. This term our Christian value is ‘Courage’ and all the children from nursery through to yr6 have showed a great understanding of what it means to be courageous and brave. We have a fantastic new facility for our EYFS at Flookburgh called Tapestry, a very useful piece of educational software. Each child in Class 1 (inc Nursery) has an online learning journey which allows the teachers to upload the children’s work, photographs and observations enabling parents/ carers to have constant access to their child’s progress. Parents also have the option of logging in and adding achievements and ‘Wow! Moments’ so that their teachers can see what they are doing at home too. There are some fantastic topics and activities to look forward to this term for all the children in school and all information can be found on our website. The New Year has come and gone, January has passed us by, the days are slowly getting longer and spring is approaching. What better time to venture out after rainy days and dark nights in to learn something new?

Welcome to our Winter Newsletter, the last few months have been filled with a wide range of activities, culminating in an amazing December. October
The calm before the busy months of November & December, we spent October making a wide range of arts & crafts, including Halloween decorations, pressed flower ornaments, our mural for the Somme anniversary, carving pumpkins for Halloween and making an amazing guy for Bonfire Night. We used the pumpkins to make delicious spicy soup. During the month we had singer Rachael Mercer come and visit us for the first time. She sang and danced with our residents and we look forward to having her back.

Our month began with our bonfire & firework display. It was cold but we were fortified by our homemade soup, hotdogs, hot drinks and gingerbread cake and we had lots of friends and family to make it a great night.
There was lots of music with another great visit from Jean Marks the accordionist and we were generously invited by Cartmel Priory School to see their performance of Oliver. Several OLD residents wentVIC and they loved it. We can’t wait for the next one.
Home Safari visited during the month and we invited pupils from Allithwaite Primary to join us in meeting their python snake, skunks, meerkat, tortoise and iguana. The residents loved stroking and holding the animals. Rachael Mercer making her debut performance singing old time songs

We had our Residents’ Christmas Party with music from John Mario with our now customary singing and dancing. Both Allithwaite Primary School and Acorn Montessori came to perform their Christmas plays – the only thing better than one group of adorable child entertainers is two. A volunteer choir came from Kendal to give us a traditional carol service and our residents also attended the St. Mary’s Church carol concert. With their final concert of the year our Vicarage Voices performed with a string quartet - we haven’t had one for a long time and Glen Giffney, the brilliant local pianist visited after Christmas for a New Year Concert.
After enjoying playing during our Old Vicarage Olympics we had a series of scrabble competitions throughout the month. Some of our residents are so good they should be starring on Countdown! Origami Artist Visit
The month started with Folksy Theatre coming to perform their traditional Christmas Show.
We started early on our Christmas decorations making baubles, wreaths and a huge banner.
It may have been dark and grey, but that didn’t stop us from going out for coffee and cake in Grange.

Home Safari with Pepe the skunk We ended the month with haggis to celebrate St. Andrew’s day – it tasted divine.
We viewed the Christmas lights in Cark and went out to get two fresh trees from Stribers Farm. Christmas Day came and so did Santa with huge bags of presents. We had a 3 course Christmas Meal with lots of wine and sherry.
