Letter from the Editor Happy Easter to you and Happy Birthday to us! This month sees the first anniversary of our sister paper Ulverston Now. It is hard to believe that only 12 months ago we nervously sent our first issue to print.

One year in and the paper is certainly gathering momentum. A huge number of reports now come in from all areas of the community, and long may it continue. It is after all a real community newspaper dedicated to the people who live and work in Dalton and Ulverston, just as Grange Now is dedicated to you. Please be careful of telephone scams as there are several very active campaigns around at the moment. It is all too easy to fall victim to this faceless crime. Those on the phone are very adept and persuasive. Last month we reported on a scam relating to safety packs in schools. Readers have recently reported scams relating to HMRC threatening legal action, Microsoft software updates, BT internet access, and I am sure there are others. If you are in a club why not mention it to everyone there at your next meeting. In particular watch out for people who may be more vulnerable to this. If anyone calls with anything strange or unusual, perhaps best to be on your guard. I must thank Sarah and Sharon and Glenn for all their commitment and hard work in bringing the paper together.

Our next deadline is 13th April, the Thursday immediately before the Easter weekend. As we lose 2 working days over Easter please can I ask for all contributions to come in as early as possible. Happy Easter to all our readers.

Butterfly Hugs and the Keswick to Barrow On Saturday 6th May, teams representing Butterfly Hugs will raise money for local families by participating in the Keswick to Barrow and Coniston to Barrow walks. This annual event involves participants walking 43 miles through the Lake District. The Coniston walk is 21 miles long, allowing walkers to raise money and reduce the number of blisters they may acquire. Dr Heather Lovatt and Dr Julie Colclough from Cartmel Surgery were the catalysts for Butterfly Hugs’ involvement because they wanted to actively raise money for the charity. The Coniston to Barrow team consists of Nicola, Ian and Connie Elson, Joe and Connie’s grandma Lily

Daly, Allithwaite mum, Karen Bradshaw and her daughter, Hannah, Allithwaite teacher Nicola Spibey and fitness instructor Cate King. Twelve year old Hannah particularly wanted to get involved because she was one of Joe’s buddy’s at school. Connie will be assisted by her parents who will take it in turns to push her all terrain wheelchair the 21 miles of the walk. The hardcore walkers

participating in the 43 mile Keswick to Barrow walk are led by the doctors from Cartmel Surgery who are accompanied by members of Grange Fitness Evolve. Hopefully, all participants will have recovered by the following weekend so that they can enjoy the third Joe and Connie Calling which takes place on Saturday 13th May.

Keep on running Gill Longfellow, from Kents Bank, will be competing in this year’s London Marathon for the 7th year in a row, in aid of charity. Gill, who ran her first London marathon at the age of 52, was inspired to help the local hospice at Ulverston, after the support they gave to a close family member. That experience gave her the desire to keep running, in support of the charity, ever since. She has raised thousands of pounds over the years for the Anthony Nolan trust, helping their brilliant work, curing cancers associated with blood. Many local people see Gill training three to four times a week along the promenade in Grange and beyond, and like all dedicated runners, she’s seen in all

types of weather. She gets regular support from family and friends and local businesses, for which she is very grateful and would like to thank all of the people that have sponsored her over the years. Last year, she achieved a lifetime best time of just over 4.26 mins, so getting better with age! Good luck Gill.

If anybody would like to support Gill this year they can sponsor her through the website: www.virginmoneygiving.com/gilllongfellow

Investment Matters

By Gary Richardson FCIB, APFS The spring budget by Chancellor Hammond was on the 8th March and was the last spring budget. Future budgets will be every autumn. There was very little by way of substance in the budget for savers other than what had previously been announced (such as the ISA allowance increasing to £20,000 per person from 6th April 2017). Below are a few of the key points.

UK growth forecasts were revised upwards and inflation is expected to peak at around 2.4% in financial 2017/18 before reducing.

The only announcement of real note for savers is that the personal tax free dividend allowance will reduce from £5,000 to £2,000 from April 2018.

There are no changes to income tax with the personal tax free income allowance to rise as planned to £11,500 from the 6th April (up from £11,000). The self-employed will pay an increase in the rate of Class 4 National Insurance Contributions from April 2018.

In summary, little to change one’s financial strategy for financial year 2017/18 with perhaps some tweaking for 2018/19 when the dividend allowance is lowered albeit seeing what is announced in the autumn budget later this year. The comments in this Editorial are only general and should not be taken as specific advice. It is important that you seek independent advice before taking any action on the above, or any other, subjects. It should be noted that the value of some investments can fall as well as rise therefore you may get back less than originally invested. Past performance is not necessarily a guide to the future. occasion there has been high levels of support for the ideas being developed. The decision by the Local Committee of the County Council on Tuesday was on one aspect of the project. Parking and traffic congestion issues were the main concerns of residents and the implementation of the Traffic Regulation Order which involves free short term time limited parking in the village and resident parking passes and double yellow lines should help. This is a project which was commissioned by the Parish Council and covers issues raised by residents in the Community Plan.

It has taken about four years and has involved a dedicated group of residents working hard with consultants and Local authority agencies. During that time there have been a number of consultations and on each

The group will now start work on other aspects of the project such as river bank enhancements including a new pedestrian footbridge, cycle racks, and improved lighting down to the car park.

The group has been supported by District Councillor Mary Wilson and County councillor Sue Sanderson who have helped by securing officer support and grants to fund the project.

Mayor’s Charity Concert Mayor, Tricia Thomas, is holding this year’s concert on Thursday 6th April at Victoria Hall. Not just a very enjoyable evening out, the event is also a fundraiser for two worthy causes. Entertainers for the evening include (in alphabetical order): Bay Community Singers, Glen Giffney, Ian Wilson, The Sands Band, Grange and Lindale School Children’s choir and singers Victor Hindle and Sue Harrison accompanied by Sylvia Trohear. Ian Wilson will be your compere for the evening which includes refreshments and a raffle. Starting at 7.30pm, admission is free, but there will be a Retiring Collection in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society/ Victoria Hall Fund.

He leaves the business, which is set to become Wareing & Hodgson, in the capable hands of son, Garry, grandson Josh and Steve Hodgson. On Saturday 18th March, Cark dance teacher, Kym Walton, took part in a spectacular star studded show, at the London Palladium, to celebrate the 100th Birthday of Dame Vera Lynn. Kym, who has been teaching ballet, tap and modern at Elite Dance in Cark for the last nine years, rejoined her dance group from the 70’s and 80’s. She told Grange Now: “Dougie Squire’s Young and Second Generation dancers were synonymous with singing and dancing on all the top television entertainment shows in the UK.” “I first worked for Dougie at the Royal Albert Hall in 1977 for the Queen’s Silver Jubilee show and went on to perform in many pantomimes, summer shows, and cabarets. Working for Dougie was my ambition from the age of 12 after seeing them perform locally. It was incredible to achieve that dream at the

age of 16, and to now have the opportunity to do it all again is just fantastic!” In 2016, a reunion of all the dancers, who had worked for Dougie over the years, took place. This became a monthly dance class and then the idea came up to perform in the show when Dougie was asked to direct the tribute to Dame Vera. The show, which featured stars including: Sue

Pollard, Bradley Walsh, Hayley Westenra, Wayne Sleep, Antony Andrews and Brian Blessed. The Tiller Girls also featured 75 of the original Dougie Squires dancers, who were renamed the Palladium Generation Dancers, for the show. The Queen, who trained as a driver and a mechanic with the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS), attended the show.

Furness Building Society customers have shown they’re all heart by raising an incredible £10,196.39 for the British Heart Foundation’s (BHF) life saving research. By opening a BHF affinity account with Furness Building Society customers can get interest on their savings whilst also supporting the BHF. Each year, the Furness makes a cash payment – from its own funds – to BHF based on the average balances held in the accounts. Mandy Rowe, Branch Manager at the Grange

branch said: “Heart disease affects us all in some way and so, for us, it’s important that we are working with the BHF to be a part of the fight against it.” Barbara Dunn, BHF Fundraising Manager for this area said “It’s thanks to the dedicated efforts of our supporters, including our corporate partners, that the BHF is able to fund worldclass research into heart disease. The amount raised already, through this partnership, is incredible and we look forward to continuing our work together.”

This small Quarry has been owned by the Parish Council since 1978, when they successfully registered it as Common Land. For the last 6 years the Butterfly Conservation group have managed this area, organised work parties and cleared away most of the rubbish and scrap which was dumped there when the Quarry was used as the village rubbish tip. The Parish Council now wants to get residents views about how the Quarry could be made more widely used and visited by the community. Ideas so far include: developing well signed paths, making the Lime Kiln safe and putting up information boards. They will be holding a drop in consultation on April 26th from 2pm to 6pm. They will also be organising some guided walks around the Quarry at that time. All local residents and anyone interested in the future of the area is welcome to come along and comment.

DAVID SAVILLE READ

As Clare House opens for its 49th season in the Read family, we remember David Saville Read, late Proprietor, who died after a short illness on 6th January 2017 aged 80. David was a Yorkshire lad, but after visiting a friend in Grange he decided it was a great place to live, and moved here with his wife June and four children in 1969 [although still taking the Yorkshire Post daily!] This was the start of his lifetime’s work. June and David built up the business together from its beginnings as a five bedroom, one bathroom guest house, with metered electric bar fires in the bedrooms, a temperamental coal-fired Aga with a hole in the grate where the coals fell through (replaced as soon as possible!), and a wooden annexe for the family quarters. He was a founder member of Round Table and June of Ladies Circle – where they made many lifelong friends. A member of Grange Golf Club he enjoyed a round

of golf whenever possible, being Treasurer, Captain and President, proudly reaching the national finals of the Teacher’s Whisky Scramble at Gleneagles. David also loved music and enjoyed playing his favourites from the Great American Song Book. He supported various musical societies being Treasurer of Flookburgh Opera, and singing with K Shoes Male Voice Choir for over 20 years. He was not one to sit down and worked tirelessly to look after the little things that made the hotel run. His ‘to do now’ list was always full. He was very pleased to have been awarded an AA Top 200 Hotel in 2004 and every year since. He was always there for his family and leaves wife June and son Andrew as Partners, plus staff, to cherish his legacy.

County Matters

Over the past twelve months, I have worked with residents and the local communities in both Windermere Road and Meathop Road to help alleviate flooding problems. With the support of all the agencies involved in the projects, I will continue to help these communities.

The Saturday bus service,532, has been reinstated with the assistance of financial subsidies from four Parishes. This is an essential link for our local residents for which I will provide continued support. Highways work has been carried out recently to improve pavements in Charney road and traffic calming measures have been put in place on Allithwaite and Lindale Roads, coming into Grange.

Over the past twelve months, I have managed to find County funds for various projects and improvements within the area.

New halo lighting has been installed on the zebra crossing in main Street to improve its visibility and safety.

Grange and Lindale schools have benefited from funding towards new computer tablets, providing pupils with further access to the digital world. Likewise Grange Library has been provided with computer tablets and

Tim’s Column

a wireless printer to help us all have greater access to Council and other services.

County funds have helped provide extra colour in the gardens with the purchase of tulip bulbs for the wall beds around the ornamental gardens and new water lily plants in the ‘moat ‘ surrounding the bandstand. The gardens in the town are again looking well thanks to a dedicated band of volunteers who work tirelessly all year round to make the area so attractive for residents and visitors alike. Volunteers are now in place in the library and providing yet another valuable service for the community.

The past twelve months has seen major improvements made to High Newton Village Hall. Financial help has been provided by the County Council along with other sources and the Committee have done a magnificent job in upgrading the hall. This is another example of so many people volunteering their time to make this hall the centre of village life again. Finally, I would like to express my sincere thanks to all the volunteer organisations for their contributions over the past year without whose commitment we would not be such a healthy and vibrant local community. Bill Wearing Conservative County Councillor Grange Division

I have been pushing the Government on a couple of local issues this month.

As I mentioned here last month our local teachers are very worried about the funding their schools will be getting over the next few years. Under new plans proposed by the Government they will be left having to fill a funding hole of about £23 million in their budgets. This equates to the salaries of about 625 teachers across the county.

The gap is caused by the fact that the Government is keeping the funding that is provided for each pupil at the same levels whilst increasing the things that schools have to pay for such as national insurance and pensions.

I have tabled an Early Day Motion calling on the Government to think again about its plans and invest in education rather than reducing the expenditure in that area. As we come out of Europe and face the world by ourselves having a well-educated population is surely more important than it ever has been. Now is certainly

not the time to be cutting investment in this area. I have also arranged a meeting with the schools minister Nick Gibb MP to discuss the issue and I am taking along all the other Cumbrian MPs as well. It is important that he doesn’t just see this as a political issue. I only hope that he listens to us.

In his budget the Chancellor announced a £100 million pot for capital investment to reduce the pressure on our A&E services. As you know I have been pushing to upgrade the facilities at the hospital in Kendal to an Urgent Care Centre to reduce the undoubted pressure on A&E in Lancaster and Barrow. So when I heard the Chancellor’s announcement I felt surely we were exactly what he had in mind when he put this money to one side. I have written to the Health Secretary and our local health chiefs calling on them to commit to spending some of this money on making our plans into a reality.

As ever if I can help you with these or any other issues please do get in touch, my email is tim@timfarron.co.uk and the phone number is 01539 723 403. Thanks for your support Tim

Mayor’s report

As a non-driver, I spend a lot of time walking around the town. During my wanderings, I have been admiring the beautiful gardens, orchard and promenade and their amazing spring planting. Without the continued dedication and hard work from groups of volunteers these green spaces would look very different and the town would be a different town. So here comes a massive ‘Thank you’ to all those green fingered individuals who give up their time to make our town so special. For some time now I, along with Sally Haines, have been working hard towards the setting up of a group to support the Victoria Hall. As you probably already know SLDC have helped over many years with funds towards the maintenance of the Hall but this will stop in the near future. We have now found a core of people who are ready to form a committee to run more fundraising events, look at grant funding not available to the Council and generally raise the profile and hopefully income

of the lovely building we call the Victoria Hall. We know there are also many people in the town who will support this committee by giving time for the more day to day things like selling raffle tickets, washing cups, putting up posters and similar worthwhile tasks, without which, events just can’t run. Thank you all for stepping forward. This year’s Mayor’s Charity Concert will be on Thursday, April 6th at 7:30 in the Victoria Hall. We will be spoiled by appearances from the Sands Band, the Bay Community Singers, Glen Giffney, Victor Hindle and Sue Harrison accompanied by Sylvia Trohear, Ian Wilson and last but by no means least, the Schoolchildren’s Choir made up of singers from Grange and Lindale schools. There will be refreshments and a raffle and rather than sell advance tickets there will be a Retiring Collection. All monies raised will be shared between the Alzheimer’s Society (the Mayor’s charity this year) and the Victoria Hall Fund. I hope we will be seeing lots of you there. Tricia Thomas

ART & MUSIC

A choir of eight thousand young voices

Kendal Concert Band

Thirty children from Grange Primary school recently travelled to Manchester Arena to take part in the 2017 Young Voices choir concert. With eight thousand children taking part, it was unarguably the largest school choir in the world! Headteacher, Phillipa Summers told Grange Now: “The Pupils from years 3, 4, 5 and 6 spent weeks learning a variety of songs, from pop medleys to welsh lullabies, they even had a song in sign language. Favourites among the children included, ‘Five Guys Named Moe’, ‘Sing!’, ‘Ain’t no mountain’ and a Justin Timberlake remix. They also enjoyed performances from the Beatbox Collective, Tabby Callaghan and a dance troupe, Urban Strides. All the children, and teachers, had an amazing experience, the atmosphere was electric and they are already looking forward to the next one.”

Young Voices has been going for twenty two years and their aim is to “inspire children to discover their lifelong connection with music.” At a single concert, parents, family and friends of the children performing will see 5,000 - 8,000 performing together and as their website states: “Nothing can prepare you for the sound of thousands of children singing in harmony. With

a full live band, backing singers, and the internationally acclaimed conductor, David Lawrence, it makes for one of the most exciting and memorable musical experiences you can imagine.” The concerts next year will take place at Manchester Arena from 22nd - 25th January inclusive. Registration is open to schools now.

the meal was served, by Victoria Hall Manager, Sally Haines, with her crew of very able assistants (who also managed a very busy bar.)

Friday 17th March, St Patrick’s Day, saw the Victoria Hall echo to the sound of music. Grange U3A’s own Sands Band, together with Common Ground from Sedbergh put on an evening of ‘Music and Merrymaking with a Celtic Flavour’. The instigator and organiser of the event was David Ramsbottom who managed to sing, play in both bands and write the quiz questions as well as arranging a packed and varied programme.

The tone of the evening was set from the beginning, with David Binks making the safety announcement to the tune of a Welsh hymn, with suitable harmonising from the audience. A small choir, put together specially for the evening, sang an unaccompanied four part version of A Gaelic Blessing before

Under the baton of its new Musical Director, and Grange resident, Robert Duesbury, Kendal Concert Band’s Spring Concert will be held at the Victoria Hall on Saturday 29th April at 7.30pm. Tickets, priced £8 for adults and £5 for under 18’s are available from The Information Centre.

Grange now | APRIL 2017 - Next deadline 13th APRIL

The two bands played both during the meal and afterwards, with many fine Irish, Scottish and Breton tunes and songs. After the quiz was marked and prizes awarded the tables were cleared for ceilidh dancing, first with Common Ground then to the music of The Sands Band, interspersed with audience participation in whole hearted renditions of The Wild Rover and Black Velvet Band which were described by one of the audience as having a ‘walking home from a party at three o’clock in the morning’ feel to them. Long before three o’clock, the last dance was danced, the final slice of Chocolate Guinness cake was eaten and musicians and dancers departed, all with the knowledge that as well as enjoying themselves, they had started the long trek towards securing the future of the Victoria Hall. A wonderful night was had by all, and not only that, a massive £1100 was raised by the event.

The first concert of the season features the Pelle´as Ensemble who have taken the chamber music world by storm by winning, not only the grand prize and the audience prize in the 2016 St Martin in the Fields chamber music competition, but also the Tillett Trust Young Artists Programme for 2017. They appear in the Victoria Hall on Friday 7 April at 8pm. Admission is £10 at the door but free to accompanied children and also students. All are very welcome.

Levens Choir concerts Levens Choir, winner of the 2017 Choir of the Year Award in the Cumbria Life Cultural Awards, welcomes Spring with two performances, in Kendal and Lancaster, of works by a varied group of composers, ancient and modern. Saturday 22nd April in St Thomas’ Church, Kendal and Lancaster Priory on Saturday April 29th. Both performances start at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £12. For further information visit: www.levenschoir.net

Cast of South Pacific in fine voice

Congratulations on Noda long service awards

Grange Amateur Operatic Society (GAOS) were in fine voice when they took to the stage with South Pacific. Lionel Warner very kindly sent this review of the production.

Following the Saturday night performance of South Pacific, leading man, Steve Low, was presented with a Noda twenty five years long service medal. Jill Baker also received a long service award, hers being the forty years bar.

The prelude to this wonderful show, was the orchestra playing a selection of all the memorable songs contained in the show. No doubt most people present would recall at least one or two, if not all, of these melodies.

Cartmel Choral Society go it alone In January of this year, Cartmel Choral Society became independent of Adult Education. The choir is a large one which currently boasts fifty eight enrolled members. They are always happy to welcome anyone who enjoys singing, so please feel free to join them on Monday evenings at 7.15pm, between September and Easter, in Cartmel Village Hall. You could always just go along for a listen first.

A spokesperson for the choir told Grange Now: “The Choral Society has been in existence since 1906 and we are very privileged to have Adrian Self as Director, admirably supported by John Shippen. Adrian has been with the Choral Society since 1990. He is a fine composer and organist and he holds the post of Director of Music at Cartmel Priory.

A Solo Exhibition by Fiona Clucas An exhibition, ‘Highlands, Islands and Still Life’ which will showcase oils, graphites and mixed media works will be held at Halecat from Saturday 29th April until Sunday 14th May. From an early age, Fiona, who is a member of the prestigious Society of wildlife Artists and a member of The Lake Artists

Grange Drama Grapevine The company are busy taking steps as they gear up for rehearsals later this month of Alan Ayckbourn’s farce, Taking Steps. The play had its world premiere at the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough almost forty years ago and the opening night there was renowned. Why? The volume of laughter blew the sound relay system, resulting in an extra

John, an accomplished organist and pianist, with a fine tenor voice, is Assistant Director at the Priory. Their amazingly talented rapport in rehearsals, every Monday evening, is one of South Cumbria’s best kept secrets. Cartmel Choral Society’s Spring Concert takes place in the Priory on Saturday 8th April at 7.30 pm. Under the directorship of Adrian, the choir will be performing Handel’s Messiah Part 2, which includes the wonderful ‘Hallelujah!’ Chorus, and Faure’s Requiem. The concert features soloists Pamela Self (soprano), Lesley Gaskarth (contralto) and the talented young bass-baritone singer Charlie Murray, together with Andy Plowman on organ.

The whole show was lively and the storyline was engaging throughout. The big part of Bloody Mary was grasped by Ann Heap who proved to be a catalyst on stage. The two romantic leads were a constant thread in the story and Eleanor Forth, playing Nellie Forbush, was outstanding in her acting, singing and dancing roles. Steve Low, playing Emile de Becquerel, her suitor, carried the part honestly and, to the relief of all, won his prize in the end! The scenes were constantly changing, with the United States troops stationed on the island, languishing in the sticky heat of the Tropics, playing their raucous parts very well,

ably led by Mark Payne who played Luther Billis. Order was occasionally restored by the appearance of Captain Brackett (Mick Malkin). The four young actors, Nerissa, Alice, Amos and Max, were superb as the children of Emile de Becquerel.

The chorus lines, both male and female, never missed a step; and the ladies, in their white US uniforms were a delight to see. Congratulations and thanks to the many people who in so many ways behind the scenes made the show a success.

Special appreciation must be recorded for Jean Malkin, Producer/Director and Jane Thedham, Musical Director and the orchestra.

seventeen minutes added to the running time that night! Described as Ayckbourn’s only true farce, it is his twenty third play and was written specifically for theatre-in-the-round. Traditional farcical elements of doors are replaced by floors with all three floors of the building present on the same level. Director, Deborah Powell, has a cast and backstage crew all raring to go and everyone is looking forward to the challenge of a second production staged ‘in the round’ at the Victoria Hall.

FOOD & DRINK

Kale, mushroom and sweet potato frittata Celeriac, swede, spinach, radish and rutabaga...with the recommendation that we all double our intake to ten portions a day, it’s going to be the year of the vegetable.

Feast your eyes on the pick of the crops coming into the Low Sizergh Barn farm shop this Spring and enjoy a fresh and tasty recipe that puts us well on the way to reaching our new daily target. It’s taken from Good Good Food by Sarah Raven, which is available downstairs in our shippon, £25.00. Ingredients

Serves 4

500g sweet potatoes Sea salt and black pepper 3 tbsp cold-pressed rapeseed oil 200g kale 1 red onion thinly sliced 2 large garlic cloves, crushed 300g chestnut mushrooms,

1 red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped ½ tsp smoked paprika

2 spring onions, finely sliced

6 Low Sizergh Farm medium eggs, beaten Handful of roughly chopped parsley

Method • Preheat the oven to 180°c/gas mark 4 • Place the sweet potato on a baking sheet and season with salt and black pepper. Drizzle with 1 tablespoon of the oil and roast for about 30 minutes, until caramelised around the edges. • Wash the kale, de-stalk and steam for 5 minutes, then squeeze dry. • Gently fry the onion in the remaining oil in an ovenproof, non-stick frying pan for 5 minutes until soft. Preheat the grill. • Add the garlic and mushrooms to the onion and cook for 3 minutes, then add the chilli, paprika and spring onions. • Briefly cook, coating the vegetables in the spice. Stir in the kale and sweet potato. Pour in the beaten egg, seasoned with salt and black pepper and fold through the vegetable mixture. • Cook over a gentle heat for 7-8 minutes, then place the pan under the hot grill (not too close to the element) until golden brown and set in the centre, about 5 minutes. • Turn the frittata out onto a flat plate and then flip it over again. Scatter with plenty of parsley and serve with a green salad.

Celebrate Spring in style with an Easter Roast Dinner! If you are planning to enjoy quality time with loved ones this Easter holiday, Easter Sunday is the perfect opportunity for the ultimate roast dinner served with all the trimmings (after the obligatory chocolate egg hunt around the garden and the big family walk, of course). Tradition dictates the consumption of Roast Lamb or Chicken, but Roast Beef or a Glazed Ham have grown increasingly popular. Local Spring Lamb is the perfect seasonal treat, and a simple roasted Leg of Lamb is hard to beat! Slow roasted with rosemary and garlic, it makes a delicious centrepiece to any dinner table but also makes a lovely cold cut for light lunches. Don’t miss our Easter Children’s Colouring Competition: Between 10th and 14th April, colouring sheets will be available from the shop. All entries will receive a small gift and the winner will be drawn on Good Friday. St George’s Day is a celebration

of all things English. Beef is an undoubted British favourite and British Beef Week starts on St George’s Day. To celebrate this, Higginsons are running a Special Offer of 10% OFF ALL BEEF ROASTING JOINTS between 21st and 29th April! Look out for our Special Mini Beef Roasting Joints! Our St George’s Recipe Suggestion: A tender, Roast Topside of Beef with a home-made gravy, golden Yorkshire puddings and buttered vegetables make a mouth-watering feast. Why not try covering your joint with a simple home-made rub to make it even more special? We particularly love a herby pepper & rosemary rub made from ground peppercorns, chopped fresh rosemary and olive oil. In the Shop this Month: During the Easter Period, we will have plenty of roasting joints in stock, including local Spring Lamb. Please note that Higginsons will be closed on Easter Monday.

ADVERTORIAL

Lifting the Veil on Boarbank

By Matron So spring has finally sprung. I can’t believe I’ve been at Boarbank for a year, time has just flown. I can honestly say I am still in love with the place. I was asked to describe what it’s like to work at Boarbank: as I said before it is a joy to see Boarbank appear in the distance when I drive to work, the positive comments and compliments I have had about my staff are too numerous to mention, all I can say is I feel honoured to be part of the team. If you have never been to Boarbank you’ll be able to come and visit us in May when we hold our famous Coffee Morning and then you’ll be able to see for yourself. Another event was the church away weekend at Lytham St Anne’s. The programme included plenty of opportunities for relaxation as well as some stimulating and thought

On Saturday 18th February more than hundred people squeezed into Cartmel Primary School dining hall to participate in ‘Curry and Quiz’. There was a wonderful mix of primary school families and staff, members of the Priory congregation and villagers all there to be quizzed by Ben Crossley and fed by Diana Devenish and her team of curry chefs. Thank you to a wonderful team of helpers and village businesses who generously supported with raffle prizes. It was a great evening with both Junior and Senior winners and the several hundred pounds raised will be used to support our annual ‘Ice-cream Sunday’

Phase 1 of the re-ordering of the Church is nearing completion. The floors in the social area, office and flower room have been sanded and sealed. New tables and chairs are now in the social area. Units have been installed in the new kitchen and work to convert the old kitchen into a toilet will begin shortly. The chairs from the Parish Hall, which had been in store since the hall was sold, have been donated to our Curate Andrew’s home church, St Mary’s Holme Cultram Abbey on the Solway Firth. There was a fire in the church in June 2016 that destroyed everything. Reconstruction is still in progress but the Abbey is now in use for services.

The Women’s Network meeting, Sylvia Trohear, spoke of her love of music. She started playing the piano at a very young age and eventually, also took singing lessons. She has sung with various choral societies in the Cumbria District, is in the choir at the URC church and frequently plays the organ there. After her talk, she asked for favourite hymns and played these for the ladies to sing. Marion Briddock chaired

The Well

On Saturday 11th March, as England were beating Scotland in the rugby, the first gathering at The Well was taking place at Grange Methodist Church. The Well is a new style of church gathering offered by Grange Methodist and United Reformed Churches. There are no hymns or sermons – instead there is conversation, the opportunity to do something creative, share a simple meal and enjoy

the meeting and Elizabeth Armstrong was the pianist.

Christian Aid Week in support of Refugees

A joint service of Methodists and URC members took place. A count was taken of the feelings of both congregations as to merging into the one Church. Joint services have been taking place over a period of time and future plans are that the services will be held alternately for a month at a time. This will test our working together and lead us to the next step. Members are to go to view three churches in the area where amalgamations have taken place.

Christian Aid Week starts this year on 15th May. This year’s theme is ‘Refugees’. When planned, it was to be particularly for those stranded in Greece and their work to help them. Much work is also being done elsewhere, such as in Africa with the hunger crisis. But this cannot wait until May. The great need is NOW.

Recently, a group of us went over to Capernwray Hall for ‘An evening with Jaime Saint’. His ‘story’ told through music, drama and personal testimony was the true events that took place 60 years ago in the life of Jaime’s grandparents and their group of friends. This group of men and their wives felt God calling them to reach out to the Auca tribe in Ecuador and following a great deal of prayer this is what they did. The men made contact with the tribe but after initial successes, all five of the men were killed by tribe members. Despite this, the work with the tribe continued and gradually many came to know Jesus. Throughout the evening as

which will be visual displays and texts, remembering Jesus and His disciples. Everyone is welcome, Open Monday 3rd - Saturday 15th 11am - 3pm; Sunday 16th 2 - 4pm and Tuesday evening 6.30 - 7.30pm. The AGM of Churches Together is to be held on Tuesday 25th April in the Methodist Hall, Grange over Sands at 2pm. Everyone welcome. Jaime talked about the lives of his grandparents, he said how much they relied on prayer which they used in all circumstances as a means of bringing all their needs to the God in whom they placed their trust. As Christians, we at Hope Church believe that prayer is so important. This Easter Sunday, April 16th, following a special morning service of praise, worship and a short talk, we are afterwards having an open time of prayer. We would like to invite anyone to come and join us to be prayed with and to receive God’s blessing. If you have a need and would like someone to pray for you, please come along and join us at Grange Primary School at 10.30am. We love to pray, we enjoy praying and we would love to pray for you.

SCHOOL REPORT

Flookburgh Primary

This term Flookburgh welcomes the newly elected Values Group. Pupils from Reception through to Year 6 have been democratically elected, by their peers, to represent them within school. The group are very keen to get to work and we look forward to see what the focus will be! Well done to everyone involved. World Book Day was very well supported and the costumes the children came to school in really showed their enjoyment of the books they read. We even saw some costumes that were based on characters from our Power of Reading titles. Each child received a book gift on the day provided by Friends of Flookburgh School (PTA) to contribute to the school’s ongoing commitment in supporting and encouraging reading in school and at home. Class 4 took a trip to Windermere School to see the Chemical Magic Show. Reactions, mystery and explosions were the order of the afternoon and the children (and teachers) had a fantastic time and also enjoyed afternoon tea refreshments. Please see our website for pictures and information about all our events and fantastic work going on in school.

We have had lots of exciting things going on in school over the past few weeks! We have had a focus of Science as part of National Science Week.

Lindale CE Primary School and Pre-School Nursery

This has involved a whole school Science morning where the children worked in mixed age groups to do lots of experiments on the theme of changeeven making their own bouncy balls! We are looking forward to working with graduates from BAE Systems on robotics and designing egg protectors for our Easter competition. Class 3 have also been working very hard on their ‘Europe’ themed dance to perform at the Dance Platform at Ulverston. This has linked to their other classroom about Europe, including some fabulous sketches of famous European landmarks. Classes 1 and 2 are also learning about Europe this half-term. Class 2 have produced some very informative travel brochures about Italy and found out lots more about Italian food through our class visit to Pizza Express in Kendal. Class 1 now have a pizza restaurant in their role play

area; complete with pizza boxes for home delivery! Lindale Pre-school Nursery have been enjoying getting outside into the play area and garden and learning lots about Spring and new life. It is great fun watching the new shoots appear in the garden.

Our choir is busy rehearsing for Easter and for a concert towards the end of term. On the sporting front, we were very proud of all our runners at the recent cross country event at Windermere School. A particular well done to

Sophie Rylance who won the Year 6 girl’s race and is running for Cumbria in the national cross country later this month. As we approach Easter, we are very aware in school that this is a special time when we think of others. We have been taking part in ’40 Acts of kindness’, where the children are given a simple challenge each day to show kindness to others. Finally, we have a new school website – have a look at all that we have been doing at www.lindale. cumbria.sch.uk

We LOVE a challenge at CPS! On 14th February, Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9) students experienced a ‘Schools’ Puzzle Challenge Day’ hosted by The Happy Puzzle Company.

Students had fun working in teams to conquer a variety of puzzles, some against the clock. Tasks included: completing a jigsaw of roads, junctions and roundabouts without creating ‘dead-ends’ from potentially thousands of combinations, constructing a continuous section of pipe using all the various pieces without creating any holes, as well as creating a mosaic design without any of the same coloured tiles touching each other. The programme of practical ‘hands on’ tasks required good collaborative learning skills, careful strategic planning and effective teamwork in order to find

a solution to the various problems posed. The students enjoying working in a different environment, further developing their thinking skills. This approach also aims to demonstrate how goals can be achieved by working together. In the afternoon, pupils from Allithwaite, Cartmel, Dean

Barwick, Flookburgh, Grange, Leven Valley and Lindale Primary Schools attended their own session. It was great to see the primary children also enjoying activities that will further encourage their learning and thinking skills in school. Ms E Charnock Subject Leader for Maths

The highlight of the month has been the continuation of The Bright Stars Competition.

There was a buzz of excitement throughout the whole school when we took part in the NSPCC Number Day 2017.

As planned, we worked on two events: a ‘Storytelling and Poetry Evening’ and an ‘Auction of Jobs’. Our Bright Stars Leadership Team, comprising of Year 6 pupils, worked extremely hard to plan and manage the event at The Grandstand, Cartmel Racecourse. They worked in roles such as Managing Director, Events Manager and Head of Design.

On the night, the turnout was overwhelming and this could have proved daunting to

the young people, about to individually read their creations to the crowd. Yet, each child got up, sat in the chair and read with such confidence and expression.

Cartmel Racecourse, along with Absolute Digital Print in Kendal, also supported the printing of a booklet of stories, poetry and drawings about Cartmel, created by the children. We hope this will serve as a lasting memory of the project. The evening, and auction, raised money both

Allithwaite Primary Eagle Owls had a visit from Mr Russell from Cartmel Priory and they explored the function of the brain and how our reflexes work. A trip to Windermere school to watch the chemical magic show where many potions were mixed and spells were created - a super lead up to our whole school science week. Our focus has been looking at the anatomy and how we can take care of our bodies. The whole school created healthy

The children wore an item of clothing with a number on it and had a great day of maths problem solving, fun maths games such as mathionaire and fraction frenzy. Thank you for all donations; we raised £100 for the NSPCC.

We are extremely proud of everybody who took part in the Key Step cluster competition on Wednesday 15th February 2017. Key Steps 1 won, Key Steps 2 won and Key Steps 3 came 2nd. Thank you to all staff and parents involved with this.

for school and for St. Mary’s Hospice, Ulverston. The competition as a whole has been a wonderful experience, providing the children with valuable life skills and serving our wider community in a variety of ways, in line with the Christian Values of our school.

Key stage two have also had lessons in bandaging up wounds and what to do in an emergency. Each class moved around the school to learn about various parts of their body and their uses. Mrs Humphries arranged Heart-start training for parents after school to ensure people are familiar with using defibrillators. recipes which included: Fruit salad, vegetable soup, fruity flapjacks and zesty smoothies. The children were surprised by how much they liked them. The children have all taken part in the training for HeartStart, learning resuscitation.

Flooks 4 Youth is now the only Youth Club on the Cartmel Peninsula, and is attended by young people aged 8 to 16 years. The Committee would like to thank the three people who attended the recent meeting and volunteered to organise and run the Club sessions. The plan is to restart after Easter. Before then, they do need to attract additional volunteers to help on Club nights on a regular basis. They also need to form a new Steering Committee (working in the background eg as Chair, Secretary, Treasurer etc). SOCIETY ROUND-UP Grange Garden Society According to a recent survey by Homebase, roses topped the list of flowers which if you have them in your garden are most likely to help sell your home. Catherine Perry whose home is Clearbeck House, High Tatham has a garden full of these gorgeous plants and knows plenty of other reasons to grow them. Catherine led the Garden Society members through the history of the rose from China four thousand five hundred years ago. Six hundred years ago.the Alba rose the ancestor of white and pale coloured roses first appeared in England followed by the red roses of the Galicia family, famed for its perfume. Through time a succession of new varieties were bred and these, described for their form and qualities included the Cabbage rose, Moss rose, Damask rose Portland rose Bourbon rose, Scots Briars and many, many others . Cartmel Peninsula Local History Society At the March meeting of Cartmel Peninsula Local History Society, June Hall talked about Cumbrian vernacular buildings and the Cumbria Vernacular Buildings Group that was set up in 2013. We heard how, in the 1950s, Dr Brunskill developed a system for recording traditional historic buildings that were not designed by architects. Subsequently a national group and affiliated local societies were established to record local buildings. The history of the development of Cumbrian buildings was covered and where the building materials came from. The key features such as window and door styles, wall thickness and layout helped to date a building.Documents can give clues to the age of the building and can help to understand how the building was used. The talk ended with a review of the wide ranging activities of the Cumbrian Group during 2016. This illustrated how the Group covers the whole county and how diverse are the styles of buildings. In the summer June will lead a walk around High Newton looking at the features of vernacular buildings in the village The next lecture on April 6 is a talk about the Matchless Disaster of 1894: Morecambe Bay’s worst boating disaster.

Please remember: our limit for society reports is 200 words, to ensure everyone gets in. Allithwaite & Cartmel WI The well attended March meeting was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. Our speaker was Diana Matthews, a former High Sheriff of Cumbria, whose talk, together with a variety of slides, began by explaining the various parts of the traditional regalia and how she cleverly adapted the Sheriff’s dress for comfort and practicality. The role is more wide ranging than many realised. The various functions and charitable events which formed part of her year in office were highlighted including the introduction of the High Sheriff’s Certificate which was presented to members of the emergency services for outstanding conduct or bravery. The next meeting is at 2pm Tuesday April 4th and the Spring Fair Saturday April 22nd at the Community Centre Leven Valley Bowling Green Leven Valley Bowling Club at Haverthwaite have opened their green for the season. With kind donations from all our friends we hope to have a new kitchen installed. Flookburgh Knit & Natters gave £100 and SLDC have contributed £2,500, and with contributions from our lunch club, bonus ball, library club, raffles and various other fundraisers we hope to reach our target of almost £7000 for the cost of the job. The committee cannot thank enough all who continually support the hall in any way . Without all their help and assistance we, as a group, could not carry on. Newton & Field Broughton WI The March meeting of Newton and Field Broughton WI was held on 8th March in Lindale Village Hall. the month, are held at the Catholic Church (Father Magna Room), Kents Bank Road, Grange. The next meeting will be on 7th April at 7pm - 9pm. Generally we paint what we like; occasionally there is a demonstration. Cost per meeting is £4, or £5 for a demonstration. This includes tea and biscuits. Contact Pat on 015395 35811

Grange Forum Our talk on 7th March, saw a change to the printed programme. Instead we were treated to a glance back into Victorian and Edwardian Ulverston. Jenny Snell projected on screen sepia post cards of streets empty of cars and lorries. Many fashions worn by ladies then were big wide brimmed hats and trailing skirts. A thoroughly informative and enjoyable presentation. Our numbers of new members continue to grow since our opening our doors to the fairer sex. Though our season closed on March 21st at the AGM, we have our Summer Outing arranged with a trip to the New Lanark World Heritage site. This fascinating place has been restored as a living community and visitors can explore the history of a village which is close to the Falls of Clyde - walking shoes are recommended. We are limited to 49 places on the coach so people interested in joining the party need to ring Alan Anderson on 015395 33696 to secure their seat. The date of this trip is Thursday June 22nd when we depart from Berners Close car park at 8.30am returning at 6.30pm.

Cartmel & District Flower Club On Monday 20th March, we welcomed Susan Wareing from Lindale, a very talented local demonstrator. Sue delighted us, as usual, with her beautiful display of arrangements on the theme, ‘A touch of Spring’. Susan very generously shared with us her hints and tips to help us all in our flower arranging. A lovely start to the spring season with beautiful flowers expertly arranged. Our next meeting will be on Monday 24th April. Debbie Davies, Formby,’Thro my garden gate’, held in Cartmel Village Hall at 2pm. Visitors and new members welcome.

Grange Lecture Society Historian Peter Warwick returned on 14th February (coincidentally the anniversary of Captain James Cook’s death in Hawaii in 1779) to talk about Cook in a lavishly illustrated lecture entitled ‘To the Far Side of the World’. After outlining Cook’s life and naval career, Peter celebrated, with reference to their impact on the ‘Age of Enlightenment’, the three great voyages of discovery on which Cook showed his cartographical genius in mapping the Pacific and brought back a wealth of information, including exquisite pictorial illustrations, assembled by the scientists and artists on board concerning the peoples and places, fauna and flora they discovered. The season closed on 7th March with Ian Caskie’s well received illustrated talk ‘SS Great Britain: from launch to re-launch’, which told the remarkable story of the world’s first iron-hulled, propeller-driven ocean-going steamship. Ian, a volunteer with SS Great Britain Trust, described Brunel’s visionary original design, traced the different phases of her working life, and ended with her salvage and return to Bristol from the Falklands in 1970 and her re-launch as an award-winning museum. At the AGM preceding the lecture Alan Kelsall was elected President for 201718. The new season of lectures begins on 10th October. Grange over Sands NSPCC We have now come to the end of our financial year and would like to thank everyone who came to our various events; all our helpers; and those individuals who contributed in many other ways. Throughout the past year the amount of £10,448.96p has been raised because of the hard work and generosity of NSPCC supporters. Of course, we are continuing to help vulnerable children in this area via the NSPCC and will once again be holding sociable, friendly events during the coming year. The first one will be a welcome return by Joan Bentley, who will be giving a flower demonstration, entitled ‘Fun with Flowers’. This will be held in the Allithwaite Community Centre on Wednesday, 19th April, tickets £5 (including coffee/tea and shortbread biscuits). There will, of course, be a raffle of the floral arrangements and a gift stall. We look forward to seeing all our friends and supporters in the coming year. Grange and District Art Society Our meetings finished at the end of March, and we now look forward to the exhibition in July - details to be announced later. Evening meetings, on the first Friday of

Grange and District U3A March 21st was our Enrolment day when members old and new gathered to find out more about what our 40 interest groups have to offer and to socialise over refreshments. The big screen illustrated what a huge range of activities and events we have on offer whilst many of our interest group co-ordinators chatted to members. On April 18th we have our AGM at 10.15 am in the Victoria Hall followed by a talk by Malcolm Kimber on ‘The Dales High Way’. Our Local Explorers Group visited Augill Castle in March and forthcoming visits include Swarthmoor Hall and the Midland Hotel and Winter Gardens in Morecambe. For these visits places must be booked with the organiser. Bookings have been heavy for the Out and About Group visit to Hadrian’s Wall in May and we are expecting a full coach. We have another Quiz in April which will be the last until the autumn, members and visitors are always welcome to join in. There are several other social events planned for the coming months where we welcome visitors and members to attend. Grange Rotary On 1st March, the Club was entertained by our President Elect, Stuart Harling, who gave us the benefit of his life story: ‘What made me what I am’. He has certainly been a pillar of the community and prominent in many organisations aside from his day job as a, now retired, Grange Solicitor.

Dr Linda Butterworth spoke about Malaria on 8th March; the toll it has taken worldwide toll and the hope for the future that, with Rotary support, it can be eradicated by 2030. A party of members attended the Rotary District Conference at Southport commencing 10 March. The theme was ‘Inspiration’ and it has to be said that the quality of speakers, including TV presenter Nicky Chapman, lived up to that theme. On 22 March, Phil Russell of Blood Bikes will be our speaker. Blood Bikes supports the NHS and is staffed by volunteers (both riders and controllers) who transport emergency supplies (breast milk, blood, samples and documents) on an out of hours basis over evenings, weekends and Bank Holidays. The major fundraising event of the year, our Grand Charity Auction, will take place at The Netherwood Hotel on Friday 31 March. Witherslack WI President, Caroline Blee, read through the Newsletter with its busy programme of events. Lin Bowman will be the delegate for the half yearly Council Meeting. Those who missed out on last year’s cream tea at The Villa will get priority this time. A proposed trip to Harewood House on May 14th has still to be checked for viability, and a visit to the Hawkshead Relish workshop is planned. Speaker Andy Lowe, on his 25th visit to Witherslack WI, kept us spellbound with his talk, ‘Lakeland Bridges’, although he did include some from elsewhere. He explained how they were built, repaired, widened, what their purpose was and much, much more. Next meeting on 11th April, Joan Bentley will be demonstrating ‘Flowers for Easter’ Visitors welcome. Tel.52302 Grange Soroptimists Club members met early in March for a business meeting. During the meeting the club agreed to the distribution of monies raised by the club for charities. It has been a very successful year and they were delighted to distribute over £2000 between National, International and local charities. Additionally the club raised money during the year for Breast Cancer Care, Toilet Twinning, ShelterBox and Water Aid. Singing for Memory continues to run successfully and the club are very grateful for the donations received for the running of this service. The last session for the Spring Term is on Thursday April 6th. Sessions start for the summer term on Thursday April 20th. If you or someone you know has problems with memory, mild or moderate dementia or problems with speech why not consider attending. Ring Isabel 36378 or Janice 58001 for information and to book. Anyone interested in joining the club or getting further information on events or our work/ Singing for Memory sessions see our website www.sigbi.org/grangeover-sands/ Cartmel Art Society 8th March. Backward thinking… Thinking in reverse was added to the list of skills required to tackle this week’s challenge - monoprinting. This involves drawing your image in reverse, so that when placed face down onto a bed of ink to be printed it is the right way round… We were fortunate to have the renowned artist from Arnside, Tracy Levine, as our demonstrator. We got covered in ink, trying various textures such as leaves, string and bubble wrap, to produce interesting effects in various ways. When we were all worn out, Tracy wowed us by demonstrating many more effects achieved using colours in overlays. The winner of our competition for our favourite painting entitled ‘Over the wall’ will be decided by member’s vote at our next meeting. This will be followed by a Jacob’s join lunch, and an auction of unwanted art materials to round off the day.

Grange Ramblers Feb 15th : Fourteen Ramblers walked from Levens Bridge, through Levens Park and along the route of the old canal to Hawes bridge, Natland and back along the eastern bank of the River Kent, returning via Levens Park again. The 5 mile walk was enjoyed in cool but sunny weather. 23rd February 8 walkers had lucky escape of the Doris decided to went south, we walked Middlebarrow Wood, Arnside Tower and around Arnside Knott, en route had to zigzagged our way to avoid the floods in places, the 5 miles walk was finished at the Ship Inn Sandside. Well done to the walkers on 9th March made 8 miles 1700 feet strenuous walk around Easedale Tarn, Blea Crag and Silver Howe, few slipped but soft landing, no major casualty, first toughie of the year, many more to come! 15th March : On the cool but occasionally sunny day, 12 Ramblers walked from Low Borrow Bridge along the valley to Low Borrowbridge farm then ascended over Belt Howe and round Mt Jeffrey, returning to the start point via Roundthwaite and the River Lune. The 7.5 mile walk enjoyed by all was followed by tea at the Cross Keys Inn Tebay. Mothers & Others 28th February. Members attended the opening night of GAOS production of South Pacific. A very enjoyable evening. 7th March meeting. ‘25 years in the air’, with a glass of champagne in hand, members took off on an evening flight with Mr Tony Shaw as their Air Steward. Tony had decided at primary School that he wanted to be an air steward and was determined to do so. He described the initial training that had to be undertaken to ensure the safety of passengers. He told of the short and long haul flights and all the numerous destinations. He ended his career as a number one flight officer on board British Airways. Tony was an excellent speaker and members thoroughly enjoyed his company on the way. Coffee Club In February Steve Chedgzoy told us about Operation Mobilisation’s 60 year history from its beginning as an outreach by George Verwer to Mexico to become a ministry to over 110 countries. Much of this is by distributing the Gospel of Jesus Christ as literature. He spoke particularly of the OM ship ministry that takes knowledge, help and hope worldwide recently to ports in Asia, Europe, Africa and today the Caribbean. Since 1970, 45 million people have visited the ships in 159 countries and bought over 5000 different titles of literature. Homes and water filtration plants have been built, medical aid hygiene training given , eye glasses fitted by experts and much needed shoes made for naked feet. Thousands of young people have come aboard as volunteers and discovered how they can use their God given gifts to benefit others and in doing so many have discovered their life’s work On April 18th, well known trumpeter Anthony Thompson, will explain how, according to his surgeon, he died several times following an operation that ‘went wrong’. His recovery was miraculous and his story ‘not to be missed’. Abbot Hall Hotel, Kents Bank at 10.30am preceded by coffee from 10am. All are welcome. Grange Probus Grange Probus Club’s AGM heard how declining membership had been turned around by the previous AGM’s decision to include lady members, with numbers rising from around 30 to over 50. This success had been reflected in the club’s finances and the meeting agreed to increase its annual grant for attendance prizes at Grange Primary

School. Chris Harris was voted in as the new chairman. The club meets monthly on the second Monday at 10.30 for 11am at the Netherwood Hotel and has an interesting programme of talks. Information on activities and membership can be obtained from the chairman on 015395 34221 or the secretary, Sean Jameson on 32105. The next meeting will be on Monday, April 10th when Robert McIlveen will talk about “Global Warming Old and New”. Non-members are welcome to attend for £5, which includes refreshments. Grange-over-Sands Civic Society The Society’s AGM was held on 16th March. After the business of the meeting there followed an Open Forum. The discussions included the future funding and running of the Victoria Hall, the refurbishment and development of the lido (open air pool) site on the Prom, potential sources of grants and funding for projects, the traffic and parking problems in the town and future activities of the Society and its programme for 2017/8. Suggestions for places to visit and topics for talks will be welcomed. The Society still needs someone to become the Secretary. If anyone would like to volunteer or wants more information, please make contact via our website. Grange WI Our speaker in February was local dentist David Tomison. He had volunteered some years ago to give his dentistry skills and expertise to help those in poorer countries. For the last 10 years he has been treating patients in Peru and had many heart-warming stories to tell us. Seven members joined about 250 women at the Coronation Hall, Ulverston to mark International Women’s Day on 8 March. It was a very lively and entertaining day – a good mix of talks, folk music, singing and even a Thai cookery demonstration. All around the Hall were stalls with items from around the world, including a very popular stall with items made by women in Rwanda. The sale of goods from this stall alone raised over £1,000. In April we can look forward to Sue Coyle who will be taking us around her grandma’s attic. New members are very welcome. Contact Margaret for more details on Grange 36735. Grange Lions We are again putting together a range of activities over the spring and summer months. Our golf competition will take place in August, our summer raffle will commence shortly, and we hope to organize a 5 a side football competition for youngsters and have a fun run. We have resumed our weekly raffle at the Cumbria Grand Hotel where we raffle whisky, wine and chocolates and raise money for Jigsaw and the many local and national charities we support as well as continuing to provide educational support for orphans in Kenya. We are a small and very focused team who enjoy each other’s company and would welcome with open arms anyone who would like to join in with our activities. We meet on the first and third Wednesday of each month and have regular social meetings in between. We also have a Friends group who support us and follow our activities. Please call me, Lion Dave Stubbins, on 07807 836591 for more information.

Dear Editor, Flookburgh Village Hall - Table Top Sales. Thanks to all who supported last year’s table top sales as £400 was raised for local charities. The first table

Dear Editor, I wish to thank the gardeners who have transformed the rock garden, in the grounds of Yewbarrow, back to its former glory. My children grew up in the 1950’s and spent their time collecting frogspawn and running around the little pathways and it has given me great pleasure remembering those

Dear Editor, A farewell from Whoopie-Doo To those of you who knew me and those of you that may have seen me (the big friendly St Bernard) this is my goodbye message to you all.

I am afraid that I am no longer with you on this side of life. I had been having trouble with my front legs which caused me to limp it was thought to be arthritis but sadly it was something much more unpleasant. My companion had to make a very difficult decision as to whether to have me back home for a very short time or end my pain and suffering whilst I was still under the anaesthetic for the x-ray. I understand how hard and upsetting it was for her but she made the right choice. With my being such a big girl it was very painful for

me to walk and going up and down stairs was a nightmare.

To little ‘Molly’ and her companion and the lovely couple and their two dogs, ‘Holly & Millie’, who stepped in to help with my walkies when my companion became unwell, I say to you I shall be keeping any eye on you. To all at Brookes Supplies and Lamberts, I thank you for the food supplies and my ‘[shampoo and blow dry’ and to kennel Maids and Dog Tails who looked after me when needed, I send my thanks. Lastly, to those at The Old Vicarage Care Home, thank you for making me welcome and making a fuss of me when I came to see you, I am sorry that I was unable to visit you for a while but I just was not well enough. Love to you all, Whoopie-Doo (who went to sleep on 9th March 2017).

Can either of our District Councillors put some pressure on these developers? We already have four empty shops in the town so it does not create a good impression. Judith Shapland.

VISIT OUR NEW PREMISES AT REGENT HOUSE Open Mon to Fri 9am–5pm and Sat 9am–1pm

Local People – Expert Knowledge Walking through Grange with my family the other day I started thinking how Grange has changed whilst managing to stay the same. Our route led us past Senior’s Bakery, Flooks and Trenouth’s to the duck pond to feed the ducks. Obviously these are now Grange Bakery (a weekly visit for Saturday cakes), The Keg & Kitchen and Lakeland Optical, whilst I am currently sat writing this in Asplin’s shoe shop! It strikes me how much in-depth local knowledge of an area can be extremely useful in knowing your market and the properties that come available in that area. Grange still exudes the Edwardian charm that comes with the period properties, ornamental gardens with bandstand and picturesque walks along the Promenade which makes it such a popular area for people to visit and move to. As progress marches on and new build properties seem to grow with the daffodils then Grange and the surrounding villages grow and develop alongside. Here at Poole Townsend we pride ourselves on our expert local knowledge of the area that we cover. With staff born and raised in the area, local knowledge becomes a valued tool in selling property and allows us to fully advise prospective sellers on the processes involved and enables us to achieve the best possible price for your property. Latest Land Registry figures show that Poole Townsend were responsible for 40 % of all property sale completions in the LA11 post code last year, leading the local marketplace again! Coupled with this is the fact that we have instructed and sold the most property so far in 2017. If you’re thinking of marketing your property in the near future come and speak to one of our local experts about the active local property market and how we can guide you through the selling process with a wealth of expert local knowledge and experience in successful property sales. Visit us in our Main Street office or call us on 015395 33316 and we can arrange a FREE and NO OBLIGATION property appraisal or simply discuss the local market and the delights of Grange and the surrounding area.
