COVER STORY

Working Together Work on garden plots, cleaning waiting room walls and ceiling, starting to rub down and paint the metal railings on the Kentsford Road boundary (to be completed by volunteers over the next few weeks.

On Friday 31st March, twenty four volunteers teamed up with professionals from Network Rail, Northern, Carillion and Cumbria Rail Partnership for a ‘Kents Bank Station Community work day’. Friends of Kents Bank Station and Foreshore Committee member, Val Kennedy said: “I would like to say a big thank you to all our local volunteers and volunteers from Northern, Network Rail, Carillion and Community Rail Cumbria who all worked so hard; you really made a difference.

“Also, a special thank you to Jane Murray, Northern Station Manager, Furness Line, for convincing her colleagues at Network Rail and Carillion that Kents Bank station deserved their support and to Jim Trotman, Community Rail Cumbria for his invaluable advice and support.” In a very short space of time, the station and foreshore at Kents Bank has been transformed and it is thanks to the many hours of hard work volunteers have put into it.

Sean wins ‘most promising’ award It is less than eighteen months since Sean Kerr picked up a cornet and started learning to play and, just to prove that practice does indeed make perfect, Sean has picked up the Robert J Lacey Memorial Award for a Promising Young Brass Competitor. Sean (8) received the award after playing the theme to ‘Star Wars’ at the gala evening of the South Cumbria Music Festival. Mum, Emma, told Grange Now: “I’m really proud of him, he’s done so well. Sean loves Star Wars and the ‘force’ certainly was with him on the night”.

Letter from the Editor

First of all this month a shout out for our local firefighters. If you want to get involved with supporting your local community in a hugely worthwhile and rewarding role, on-call firefighters are needed in both Grange and Arnside. For more information, please visit cumbria.gov.uk/ oncallfirefighters As always there is a huge amount of activity from arts and drama events, clubs and societies and musical concerts on both sides of the estuary. Talking of concerts, don’t miss the Rusty bullets on 13th May. Tickets for Grange Drama are now on sale (7-10 June) while across the estuary in Arnside, tickets are on sale for the summer concert on 10th June. Lots to read from our local schools this month on pages 20 and 21. Best of luck to everyone who is working towards their exams - it’s that time of year. Don’t miss our ‘look back in time’ on page 27. We have lots more to show you over the coming months but as always if you have an interesting photo to share, why not pop in and see us. Finally we are a free paper and acutely aware of the environmental impact we make on the environment. Grange Now delivers 2.5 million printed pages a year. Paper is, of course, the biggest potential source of waste. Therefore all paper is responsibly sourced, certified to FSC and PEFC chain of custody standards. Grange Now is printed using only vegetable based inks from renewable, naturallyoccurring sources (soya oil, linseed and rosin) rather than non-sustainable mineral oil. So, dear reader, you hold in your hands a marvel of sustainable production. But don’t forget: once you’ve read from cover to cover, make sure to pass along to a friend or recycle your issue of Grange Now. Thank you to the hard working team at Grange Now behind this issue. We are already planning the next one so don’t forget the deadline on 19th May. Doesn’t time fly when you are having fun!

At the full Town Council meeting on Monday 10th April, Councillors voted to co-opt a new member. At just twenty years old, it has to be said that Lyndon Howson is certainly the youngest Councillor currently serving on Grange Town Council but it is probably worth mentioning that Tom Harvey was the same age when he became a councillor Employed as a Supervisor in the Age UK Superstore in Grange, Lyndon hopes to bring a younger perspective to meetings and also hopes to get more young people to engage, not just with the council, but with the town. Lyndon takes up the position left vacant by Judith Shapland following her resignation in March. He told Grange Now: “I’m totally unfazed by all of this and said all the moving around has helped his grow in confidence as had his time spent in Grange panto and Grange Operatic Society. I’m also delighted to be following

in my Auntie, Gillian Howson’s footsteps. She was also a Councillor and was also Mayor (1979-80). Under ‘Have your Say’, Robert Leach announced that Prom Art has become a Community Interest Company (CIC), and event management, following tenders, will be undertaken by Groupe Geraud. Cllr. Eric Morrell is the Director of the newly formed Prom Art CIC, Sam Spodofora, Rose Ivison and Harry Hughes are members of the Oversight Committee. Robert Leach

County Council Leader calls for local elections to be delayed Just as we go to print, Stewart Young, current county council leader has called for local elections, which are due to take place on 4th May, to be delayed until 8th June.

the original founder of Prom Art, is appointed as a Lifetime Member, without Robert’s endless work Prom Art would not exist today. Cllr. Tracy Hathorn confirmed that the Games court has been successfully resurfaced and is used regularly by local and visiting families. Cllr. Hathorn has worked very hard to bring this to fruition. New cycle racks are to be installed at pig Lane. Next meeting: Monday 8th May at the Victoria Hall, 7pm.

On 18th April, PM Theresa May announced that a General Election will take place on 8th June and Mr Young is calling for the local elections to be held on the same day. Mr Young said: “If they had been on the same day the cost would have been split

and saved us hundreds of thousands of pounds.” The cost of the local elections is expected to be in the region of £400,000. Mr Stewart went on to say that it doesn’t make sense to ask people to go out and vote twice in the space of a month.

Investment Matters By Gary Richardson FCIB, APFS

Beneficial new rules came into force on 31 March 2017 with regards to exit fees on pension plans. It is not uncommon to find pension plans (generally older longstanding plans) with high fees or charges to transfer elsewhere. Further, these plans are often not compatible with the new pension legislation which allows (amongst other things) the fund to be inherited on death and unlimited access to the value. Government rightly identified such policyholders were at a significant disadvantage as a result. Since 31 March for those aged 55 and over any exit fee is capped at just 1%. You do not have to be drawing benefits from the pension for this to apply so it will also apply to transfers.

Natwest to close in Grange The decision by Natwest to close local bank branches “lets customers down” and leaves many local residents facing long journeys to access bank services, according to local MP Tim Farron. Natwest has decided to close its branches in Grange-over-Sands and Ambleside, as part of plans to close 128 of

its branches across the country this year. The bank said there has been a “dramatic shift” in the way customers choose to bank, with many shifting to mobile and online banking. The Ambleside branch is due to close on the 9th October 2017 and the Grange Over Sands branch on 3rd October 2017.

Ospreys are back to breed at South Lakes nature reserves

For the fifth year running, a pair of breeding ospreys has returned to Foulshaw Moss, near Witherslack giving rise to the hope that chicks will be soon be hatching. The two claimed the same nest they have used since 2013 and arrived a few days earlier this year, helped by the southerly winds.

Given the significant enhancements following the pension freedom legislation this latest rule could be hugely beneficial for those aged 55 and over with accrued pension funds. It would be sensible to check whether or not you benefit from this.

A pair of Ospreys have also returned to Natural England’s Roudsea Wood and Mosses National Nature Reserve on the Holker Estate. The Ospreys were first seen on the site in 2013 but it was not until the following year after the construction of a purpose-built nesting platform, that the pair adopted the platform and began to build their nest. They reared two chicks successfully in 2014 returning in 2015 and 2016.

We’re all over the place the Neighbourhood Plan has arrived

Can you help your local Hospital save money? The Trust would be very grateful if everyone, when they have recovered, would return them. They always check they are safe, clean them thoroughly before giving them out to the next patient. This releases money for them to spend on other important patient care and equipment. If you have a metal walking stick, crutch or walking frame in the back of your cupboard, or under the bed, please return it to

The policies in the Draft Plan are built from everything you’ve told us over the past two years about what you want for the future of Grange. We had to stick to planning-type matters - we couldn’t improve people’s parking habits! - but we’ve done our very best. When planning applications come forward in future, developers will be in no doubt what the residents of Grange and Kents Bank require of them and why. To find out more, have a look at the full Draft Plan, or just read the bits you’re interested in (it even has a House Design Guide!). The full Draft Plan, a Summary and Comments Form are available in three locations from Monday 8 May to Sunday 18 June Grange Library (please note that the Library is closed 12-18 June), the Information Centre in Victoria Hall and Reception at the Abbot Hall Hotel, Kents Bank. The documents are also available on the Grange Town Council website www. grangeoversandstowncouncil.gov.uk. Please use the Comments Form for your views or you can write a letter and send it to the Town Council, Victoria Hall, Main Street, Grange-over-Sands, LA11 6DP or email your comments to: gosneighbourhoodplan@ gmail.com. All the details are also on the Information Sheet. You are also invited to a Drop-In Display. Here you can ask members of the Steering Group questions about the policies you’re interested in and make your views known. Places and times below, everyone welcome. • Victoria Hall Friday 12 May 11am to 7.00pm and Saturday 13 May 11.00am to 1.00pm • Abbot Hall Hotel Tuesday 16 May 2.00pm – 4.00 pm • Grange Library Wednesday 17 May 10.00 am to 1.00pm Most importantly, tell us if you think we have got anything wrong. There will be a Referendum later in the year when you will be able to vote on the Plan but this is the last major opportunity to make changes, so tell us now before time runs out. Your deadline for telling us is 9.00am on Monday 19 June 2017. We look forward to your comments.

Every year, Morecambe Bay Health Trust spend £63,000 on metal walking sticks, walking frames and crutches. Once recovered, patients often put them aside and forget to take them back.

A heartfelt thank you to CO-OP members Over the last six months, under the Co-op Local Community Fund project, Coop members and customers have been supporting three voluntary local community services and we at Grange Responders were fortunate to be chosen as one of these to benefit from the scheme. Essentially 1% of customers’ money spent on Coop branded goods was designated for their chosen charity. Towards the end of the period we were thrilled to be informed that the total would be around £850. So, imagine our surprise and delight on 13 April when we received the final communication from the Co-op Community Team which told us this amount had grown, and we were to receive

£2331.62! In our application we said we planned to use the money to purchase training equipment and a few weeks ago we expected to have to supplement the Co-op funding with money from our reserves. Now we can purchase outright a sophisticated manikin for responders to enhance their advanced life saving skills and also a replacement projector to use for team training and at local Heartstart sessions. Thank you Lee and your colleagues for nominating us and customers and members for supporting Grange First Responders in this way. We are truly grateful. Plumbs-Grange-Now-Covers-Ad-Apr17-P.indd 1

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

Panararmer Panararmer’s distinctive yellow van is seen regularly around the town and with good reason. As a family business who have been established for over 34 years, they have built up a strong local reputation for designing supplying and installing kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms to the highest quality.

All those years ago. the company was founded by two brothers and their wives and built up using high quality suppliers and their own in house tradesmen to ensure fitting is to the highest standard. Panararmer have their own showroom where you can browse for room sets and ideas or they will come to you. The vast majority of customers are private homeowners but they have worked in a number of B & B’s and holiday cottages across the Lake District.

Renowned for excellent service, and their wide choice of products, there is something for every home. Talking of products, the kitchens they offer come from French based Mobalpa and UK based The Kitchen Works, Bedrooms are from Symphony, while bathrooms come from Utopia, pottery from Ideal Standard and Shower Enclosures from local manufacturer Kudos. Now owned by one of the brothers, John, his daughter Alison and two long serving team members Colin and Marcin, Panararmer is a great local success story, and our congratulations go out to them. info@grangenow.co.uk

County Matters Many of you will have observed the new handrail in main street. I must thank our highways team for an excellent job in fixing and locating it all in one day.

I would also like to thank the landowners( SLDC and Lisa at Lakeland Opticians) for allowing the County Council permission to erect this much needed facility on their walls. To Lawrence for reminding me of the commitment I made last year that I would find the funding and make this happen. Recently we have had a spate of warnings from the Police and Trading Standards regarding scam telephone calls from people pertaining to be from your bank or even more disturbingly from HMRC (Her Majestys Revenue and Customs).

If in any doubt regarding these organisations never release any personal details and report the incident to the authorities. As we are now entering the summer season with hopefully a lot better weather please be aware of the problems of door stop traders. If ever in doubt contact County Council Trading Standards. Cumbria County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service has recently launched a new recruitment drive to find additional on-call firefighters to serve their communities. On-call firefighters are needed to join crews at 27 fire stations across the county including Grange-over-Sands. Mayor’s Report

I have had a very busy month one way and another and one thing I am particularly pleased about is that we now have a Victoria Hall Support Group committee – VHS Group for short! They will be working with a number of others to support the future of the Victoria Hall by raising the profile of the Hall and running fundraising events and activities. The highlight of the past month however has to be the Mayor’s Charity Concert on Thursday April 6th at the Victoria Hall. This event was very well attended indeed and we were treated to an evening of music with performers aged from six to well over sixty. The calibre of the performers was astonishing. We really do have a plethora of talent in the town and it starts with our local school-age children and continues well into retirement years. A huge thank you goes out to all those who played

and sang so amazingly for us. You really were appreciated. Of course, like any large event, it doesn’t just happen, so a massive vote of thanks also goes to all those who helped on the night, selling refreshments, raffle tickets and programmes and holding the ever heavier buckets for the retiring collection. And I really can not thank Sally Haines enough – without her there would have been no concert. As I write this we haven’t quite worked out the final figure but we made something in the region of £1200 to be shared between the Alzheimer’s Society and the Victoria Hall Fund.Thank you all for your generosity. This will be my final Mayor’s Report as I shall be stepping down in May to be succeeded by my present deputy, Peter Endsor. I have really enjoyed my year, in particular meeting so many interesting and inspiring people. You have all been great. Thank you. Tricia Thomas

Tim’s Column I am writing this just after Mrs May has announced her intention to call a General Election. As a result here we are all facing the County Council Elections in May and then another election in June. So if you haven’t already seen me at your door recently then the chances are very high that you will be over the next few weeks. Sadly the same cannot be said for my wife Rosie and our children. Meanwhile you can rely on me to keep on with my job as your current MP. I have had a meeting with a senior official at Natwest to urge them to reconsider their plans to close their branch in Grange. They say this is in response to the dramatic shift they have seen in the way people do their banking. The point

that I made was that this shift will have been so much more noticeable in cities than in places like Grange where the population is older and much less likely to use online and mobile services. Many of their customers in Grange will not even be online let alone have a smartphone and yet they are the ones who are expected to lead this change. In all honesty this is really just a convenient way for Natwest to try to save money whilst pretending to respond to customer needs and it really is not acceptable. As ever if I can help you with any issues then please do get in touch by emailing tim@ timfarron.co.uk or calling 01539 723 403. Thanks for your support and whichever candidate you support please do remember to vote in both elections. Tim Farron

Set in an artist’s studio the audience were kept on the edge of their seats by the storyline and performances, as well as admiring the array of paintings on stage. Arnside Choral Society’s summer concert

First Aid will be provided by BAE Systems again this year. A big thank you to Gill Pocklington and Heather Wilson who support the event every year by making sure everything runs smoothly, by ensuring all of the legalities and arrangements for the use of the playing fields and centre are met. Everyone at Butterfly Hugs is very grateful for all of the time and effort local people have put in to enable the event to take place.

This year’s Summer Concert is full of joyous, rhythmic music from Will Todd, Michael Tippet & Jonathan Willcocks, guaranteed to get your feet tapping! It features jazz, spiritual and native South African rhythms.

Allegri launch summer concert with Te Deum Allegri will begin their summer programme this year by commemorating the death, 250 years ago, of Georg Philipp Telemann, a composer who was compared favourably in his lifetime with Bach and Handel. From his vast list of compositions, the choir and players will be performing the extensive first chorus from his cantata ‘Machet die Tore Weit’. This chorus will be followed by a canticle by Ralph Vaughan Williams - his Te Deum for the enthronement of the Archbishop of Canterbury in 1928 – and the first half rounded off with a choral setting of Vaughan Williams’ ‘Serenade to Music’, his muchloved tribute to Sir Henry Wood. The second half of the programme will be taken up by the glorious Te Deum by Georg Friedrich Handel which he wrote to celebrate the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. Based on Purcell’s Te Deum, this piece became highly popular in Handel’s lifetime and was performed regularly at St Paul’s Cathedral in London until superseded by a later Handel setting of the same canticle, this one written in 1743 to mark a military victory in Dettingen. Saturday 3rd June at St Andrew’s Church, Main Street, Sedbergh LA10 5BZ - 7.30pm and Sunday 4th June at St Cuthbert’s Church, Kentmere LA8 9JL again at 7.30pm. At both concerts there will be retiring collections for the church and choir. For more information contact: Owen Davies, owen@odavies. plus.com on 01539 621261

Grange Concert Club The April concert given by the Pelleas Ensemble was outstanding and it was easy to see how this harp, viola and flute trio are taking the world of chamber music by storm. In May, we welcome post graduate opera students by kind permission of the Royal Northern College of Music, where they all currently study. Again, all are hugely talented. Samantha Clarke is an Australian soprano studying for an advanced postgraduate diploma of music and was a top 5 finalist in the prestigious IFAC Australian Singing Competition performing with the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra. Francesca Letch, mezzosoprano, is currently a member of the Philharmonia Chorus’ young singers professional scheme. Stuart Orme, baritone, hijacked a staged interview with Gethin Jones, at the Rugby League World Cup opening ceremony at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff in 2013, to perform the song “Delilah” as part of a flash mob in front of 50,000 people. Michael Vincent Jones, tenor, has toured extensively with the National Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company, and Benedict

The wonderful work of Grange based photographer, Andy Mortimer, has often graced the front cover of Grange Now and many of his canvasses adorn the walls of our offices. Andy started his photography business when, unable to find a decent postcard to send to his friend, he decided to have a go at making his own. His postcard and greeting cards continue to be very popular. Andy’s latest venture is an exhibition entitled ‘Layers’. He told Grange Now: “I have

As with most choirs, tenors are in short supply; a special ‘Tenner for a Tenor’ scheme has been launched in an attempt to attract a few more male voices into the choir. There are no auditions, you do not need to read music, you just need

Grange Drama Grapevine Our Summer Production, ‘Taking Steps’ by Alan Ayckbourn, one of our favourite playwrights, is something different. Described as his most technically challenging farce, the play will be set in an acting area resembling a ‘light bulb’ shape within the auditorium of Victoria Hall. Patrons, like the cast, will experience ‘house hunting’, theatrically speaking, with ‘shore side’ seats abutting a ‘three storey house’ up for sale. Grange Drama extends a special welcome to two new members of the cast: Mark Payne, who is full of enthusiasm after appearing as Luther Billis in South Pacific, will play Leslie, and fellow Grange Opera member, Howard St Quinton, steps into the role of Tristram. Together with Sue Almond as Kitty, Benita Finch as Elizabeth, Steve Pollard as Roland and Jim Robson in the role of Mark, they are rehearsing

with first time director (for Grange Drama) Deborah Powell, supported backstage by Hilary Stubbs, Alyson Irving and Bob Somerset, to name but three. The play runs from Wednesday 7th June to Saturday 10th June at Victoria Hall Grange. Doors open at 7pm and Grange Drama suggest you get there early to ‘view the set’ and choose your seat. Tickets are priced at £8 for adults and £4 under 16’s and are available (from mid-May) from Grange Information Centre, www. trybooking.co.uk or on the door. Curtain up at 7.30pm

Spring Fritters with Wild Garlic Mayonnaise It’s the time of year when a walk through Low Park Wood is accompanied by the heady fragrance of wild garlic. And the Low Sizergh Barn chefs have been foraging and then creating with their fresh pickings - introducing customers to garlicky Spring specials on our café menu. Ingredients

Serves 4

For the fritters 150g plain flour A good pinch of salt 330ml lager 2 egg whites A selection of fresh herbs, leaves and flowers Groundnut or sunflower oil for frying

Get set – Barbecue! They’re nearly here… those long, sunny summer days of flip flops, barbecues and ice cream. It’s our favourite season!

We’re all eagerly anticipating a return to al fresco eating, so we’ve brought back a wonderful range of delicious barbecue foods and summery flavours that will really help your summer sparkle. From the most mouth-watering

For the wild garlic mayonnaise 2 egg yolks 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard Juice of 1 lemon 150ml groundnut oil a handful of wild garlic (about 30g) 2-3 tablespoons water Sea salt and black pepper

cuts of minted local spring lamb, to juicy smoked Beef Ranch Burgers and our vast range of fresh and zingy dipping sauces, rubs and marinades, you will never be out of ideas for creating the tastiest crowd-pleasing cuisine! Many of our family Barbecue favourites are now included in our great value “3 for £10’ range, including marinated Pork Riblets, Hamburgers and Grillsticks. For those of you who are planning trips to the races, the beach or even a cross bay walk, don’t

Method • First make the mayonnaise. Put the egg yolks, mustard and lemon juice in a food processor and blend briefly. With the machine running, gradually add the oils, pouring them in very slowly at first while the emulsion begins to form. Add the wild garlic and some salt and pepper and continue to blend. Mix in enough water to thin the mayonnaise to a good dipping consistency. Transfer to a bowl and leave in the fridge. • For the batter put the flour and salt into a mixing bowl and add the beer in a slow, steady stream, whisking constantly and being sure to knock out any lumps, until you have a smooth, thin paste. Leave this to sit at least half an hour. Just before you begin cooking the fritters, whisk the egg whites until stiff and gently fold them into the beer batter. • Heat some groundnut or sunflower

forget that we offer our Higginsons gourmet Deli Picnic Bags, which cost just £20 and contain all you need to feed a family of four. A selection of pies, cheese, cold meats, cold salads, chutney, bread, Eccles cakes or scones and even bottled water is all included, as is the disposable cutlery, plates and napkins – so picnic the easy way this summer with a little help from Higginsons! oil in a large, heavy-based frying pan over a moderate heat – a centimetre deep is plenty. Drop a little of the batter in to gauge whether the oil is hot enough to begin frying; the batter should sizzle when it meets the oil and turn golden within about a minute. Then gently dip a few leaves of flowers at a time into the batter, lift out and allow any excess batter to drip off before placing them in the hot oil. Be generous with available space in the pan; a fork is useful for flipping over the fritters. Cook for 3-4 minutes, until both sides are golden, then lift out on to some kitchen paper and season with salt immediately. You can gather the fritters together and flash them in a hot oven for a minute before serving, or eat them as you go along. Serve with mayonnaise for dipping.

Wild Garlic Pesto By Neil Mulhall

Wild Garlic or Ramsons is growing profusely at the moment. It can be found in abundance in broadleaf forests and hedgerows. You can usually smell it before you see it, a real pungent garlicky smell. It is a member wild member of the alliums family and all parts including the flowers are edible. We use wild garlic for many culinary uses in the kitchen from risottos and stews to soups and salads but one of our favourites is Wild Garlic Pesto and it’s so easy to make. This recipe will make one small jar. And when stored in the fridge will last several weeks. INGREDIENTS

50g washed Wild Garlic leaves 30g pine nuts very slightly toasted in a dry frying pan 35g freshly grated

parmesan cheese, a mixture of coarse and fine works well 70ml olive oil Freshly ground black pepper and sea salt

METHOD

The easiest way is to pop Wild Garlic leaves and the pine nuts into a food processor and blitz for a few seconds, until it’s all chopped. We prefer it quite coarse. However if you don’t have a food processor simply chop the leaves and crush the pine nuts with a pestle and mortar. Transfer to a bowl and add the grated parmesan and olive oil and mix really well and season to taste. RECIPE IDEAS

Simply use as you would basil based pesto. It’s delicious with pasta with a little tomato puree or a favourite of ours is to spread nice and thick on bruschetta with cherry tomatoes

CHURCH NEWS

ADVERTORIAL

Lifting the Veil on Boarbank

By Matron It’s nearly Coffee Morning time. We have our annual coffee morning on the last Bank Holiday in May so this year it’s the 29th May. Last year was my first one and I was astounded at how many people attended. I’m not surprised as there were so many stalls. The kitchen had surpassed itself with tables laden with cakes, pies, scones, tray-bakes and biscuits. There was a wonderful selection of Italian food alongside bread, chutneys and jams. Not to mention the books, clothing, plants, flowers and antiques. We have marquees on the lawn filled with goodies and children’s entertainment. So if you’re looking for something to do on the 29th May, why not pop and see us? The morning begins at 9am. Come over to the Nursing Home and say hello, I’d love to meet you. Telephone: 015395 32288 manager@boarbankhall.org.uk

The members of committee and officers, were all returned for the coming year, and then the main business was the distribution of funds. It was decided that a gift be given to the Church, and the remainder of the funds would be divided between the Calvert Trust, Eden House, District Network and Chernobyl Children.

On Wednesday, 29th March, the Women’s Network organised a slide show presented by Maurice Steele, a retired farmer, with a wonderful eye for a picture and great talent for putting together an engaging show, with music and commentary. His ‘Travels with a Camera’ featured many properties of the National Trust. We visited the nature reserve at Blakeney,

United Reformed At a joint meeting of the congregations of the United Reformed and the Methodist Churches in Grange it was agreed that procedures would be put in place for joint worship together every Sunday morning, alternating between the two churches month by month, commencing in June. This is a further step along our road of cooperation, which we hope will continue.

The presentation in the Methodist Church, ‘Journey to Jerusalem’ during the last 2 weeks of Lent was a joint effort, which was much appreciated by those who came in. All our Easter services were combined, which made for a great sense of fellowship.

On Easter Monday, there was the Coffee Morning in the URC hall. As usual , this was a happy & well-attended event. Thank you for all your support. Once more, Roger Jones, the

This has now been edited and copied onto DVD, and will be shown in the Church Room on Tuesday 2nd May at 7:30 pm. THE OLD VICARAGE NEWSLETTER Allithwaite, Grange-over-Sands

Welcome to our Spring Newsletter - we’ve had a busy few months and we’ve got even more planned for Summer January

We were pleased to welcome Lizzy Walker back to the Old Vicarage – and were entertained with a jazz concert which left us feeling relaxed and mellow. It was a great way to start the year.

We embarked on a range of projects including decoupage lamps, a decoupage flower bowl, new photograph display boards and a Valentine’s Day banner and decorations. We also had time for what can only be described as a mammoth series of scrabble games, with residents regularly trouncing the staff!

We started a knitting group under the skilled guidance of Elizabeth Soni. Our first project is knitting a blanket.

February

Neither wind nor rain could keep us from going outside as we headed into Grange for our regular café visits. There was more arts and craftwork as we finished some of our projects and started on others. We enjoyed making decoupage art jars and creating a memory table with photos of important events pasted onto it. As spring approached, we planted irises and also made flower arrangements using daffodils from The Old Vicarage garden.

March It was another musical month which started with some of us going to see South Pacific performed by Grange Amateur Operatic Society – it was brilliant and we have asked the society if they can visit us for our own personal performance. John Mario came and sang for the residents and had us dancing in the lounge.

In the middle of the month Richard Bromley returned for a musical extravaganza and had us singing along to the old classics.

The ladies from Lakeland Willow Weaving came to show us how to make some living craft work.

John Mario rocking & rolling with the residents

We had a St. Patrick’s Day meal – and The Old Vicarage was decorated with shamrocks. We also had a delicious three course meal on Mother’s Day.

It’s the Richard Bromley Singalong

Willow Tree Craft Making

We were entertained by the accomplished musician Penny Legat who plays both the violin and keyboard, much to our delight. We celebrated Burns Night with haggis – we weren’t all sure if we would like haggis but we found it very tasty.

We had pancakes on Shrove Tuesday – from ice cream to syrup to honey, we tried as many combinations as possible!

Forthcoming Events

Beetham Garden Centre – May

Holker Hall Afternoon Tea – June Old Vicarage Strawberry Fete – 15th July

We had flower arrangement sessions twice during the month and so every room at The Old Vicarage was filled with brightly coloured flowers! We were then inspired to start a flower bouquet paper quilling project. At the end of the month the children from Acorn Montessori came and sang for us. They are talented and entertaining and we were thrilled to see them.

SCHOOL REPORT

Lindale School

Grange CE School

Science Week began with year 6 visiting Windermere School to take part in a Science Performance. Explosions, bangs and pops was certainly the stimulus needed to get the children talking about science.

At Lindale School we have been loving getting outside more now that the weather has improved. Our Reception and Year 1 children have been excavating in the Reception garden and have made. dinosaur dens. We have also been improving our Class 1 playground with newly painted fencing and sheds. The children have also been fascinated in learning about who might be coming to live in our mini-beast hotel’ that they have helped to make. The whole school took part in French day earlier this month. As well as learning more of the language, we also had a geography focus and learnt about French food and ‘Le Tour de France.’ Our toddler taster this month had a ‘springtime’ theme. As well as planting in our garden, the children did some wonderful observational paintings of spring flowers. Lindale pre-school Nursery have been exploring the village and looking at different features in the environment. The children have been taking photos of what they have seen to create a large map and photographic display in the Nursery. We finished the term with an Easter celebration of worship, puppets and crafts in St Paul’s Church Lindale. We also held our Easter egg decorating and Easter garden competitions. As usual the entries were outstanding! Our photo shows some of the winners.

Image Theatre visited once again to stage the Jungle Book with funding through Michelle Jurd Memorial Trust. KS2 children were involved in the chorus and some children even took on key acting roles. Comic Relief was a sea of red with all children and staff showing their support by dressing up and donating £1. The day began with a fun assembly where the children gave a makeover

School Council/Rotakids took action by collecting enough food to feed 160 people for a day. This was delivered with help from Grange Rotary to the foodbank in Barrow, where they met one of the

Cartmel Priory In March, the Cartmel Priory School Design Technology Department took part in the annual Rotary Technology Tournament.

We took three teams of four, comprising Year 7, 8, 9 and a team of Year 10 students. Our students competed with others from schools in the South Lakes area on a challenging design brief to complete a pipe mole. This device had to perform a range of tasks that increased in difficulty depending on the age category students competed in. The pipe mole was a buggy with a shovel, powered by a battery and motor. Flookburgh Primary

It’s been a jam packed half term for everyone at Flookburgh with plenty more to look forward to after our well earned Easter break. British Science Week was celebrated throughout the year groups and a fun filled day of science was planed for all. There was plenty to get involved in, from

to blindfolded staff members and led them through an assault course, followed by a foot soak (in strawberry jelly!). £317 was raised.

had to produce a simple pine frame and mount the motor, before using pulleys to transfer power to the wheels. This presented a significant challenge to all students, but one that they all rose to. Solutions varied in performance and were demonstrated during the testing phase of the competition, where all other continental jigsaws to making Volcanoes and a Glacier goo! Our year 5 and 6 children have taken part in posy making which they delivered in person to the residents at Bridge House Care Home. It was clear to see that those receiving posies were so very pleased to see the children and grateful to them for the attractive gifts. Community connections are so important to us at school and to celebrate this further parents, family and friends

organisers and helped to label and sort the items ready for making into food boxes. Thanks go to all pupils, families and friends of the school for donating the 67Kg of food. Accompanied by Ken Thompson, Ray Booth from Grange Rotary and Sian Jamieson the school’s lead for the School Council and Rotakids. students watch to assess the competition! The day was a great experience and one that would be difficult to recreate in school. Asking young people to work as a team, make decisions under pressure, apply acquired knowledge to develop a solution and then test a product in front of an audience is a daunting prospect. I view the competition as a valuable way to expose our students to new challenges and experiences and would like to thank the Rotary Club for organising the event. We look forward to next year and another design challenge with anticipation. Fraser Wilson, Subject Leader of Design Technology were invited into school for our most recent Enterprise Day. The children had on display art work and project work which was made available to buy. Visitors were able to enjoy looking through the childrens work whilst enjoying tea and coffee. Class 1 had been very busy making and decorating delicious biscuits which had been in such high demand that they ran out! Well done done to all involved.

Allithwaite Primary

Allithwaite had an action packed end to term two, full of purpose and celebration. In our taking writing out of the books initiative, the tawny owls invited family to come to a shared reading session.

The children read their rainforest themed adventure stories to their loved ones, each swelling with pride. Is it all their own writing! Exclaimed one parent! Before the reading, the children performed their rainforest dance which was truly wonderful. The barn owls wrote their own play script for a Greek myth which they then performed as a shadow puppet theatre to their families. Even the youngest children were mesmerised by the stunning show. The eagle owls invited the community to come and view their world war writing gallery, filled with journalistic writing, diary extracts and evacuee letters. The gallery was very emotive and thought provoking, a true reflection of our courage value. At the event through the sale of tea and coffee the children raised monies for children in Syria, a charity identified by the children during courage related studies in worship. This month we also donated to autism awareness and children in need.

LETTERS Dear Editor, The report published in last month’s Grange Now was wholly incorrect in its assertion that Cartmel residents have somehow ‘voted for’ the, seemingly imminent, village traffic scheme. The only vote, was that taken at the County Council meeting in which, exclusively Liberal Democrat, members narrowly voted to implement the scheme

Dear Editor, At the town council meeting in January there were 3 possible budgets put forward. Budget ‘B’, a 5.8 increase, was accepted. However, when the South Lakeland District Council tax bill arrived the increase was shown as 8.2%. I have had 3 conversations with the council tax office in Kendal as to why there was such a difference. They assured me that the 8.2% was

Dear Editor, AGM of the RNLI Grange over Sands Branch on 20 March 2017 In its March edition, Grange Now kindly printed an appeal for new members to enable the Grange Branch of the RNLI to continue its 90 year record of fundraising, by volunteering at the AGM. I am pleased to report that the response was such that the AGM agreed that the Branch should continue, rather than becoming a subgroup operating under either the Arnside or Barrow RNLI Branches. At the AGM four officers were elected and at a subsequent Committee meeting the remaining six

after, we must believe, considering a large number of objections and concerns from all sections of the village. Responsibility for this scheme rests not with the village community but with the members of Cartmel Village Society (in the guise of the ‘CTI Group’), Lower Allithwaite Parish Council and, of course, the local Lib-Dem councillors. However I am sure that, once the

results of imposing four miles of double yellow lines and forcing a much increased volume of traffic through Cartmel Square become clear to all, these organisations will be just as enthusiastic in accepting responsibility for the consequences of their self-indulgent and hugely expensive scheme as they were in selling it to the village.

based on figures sent in by Grange Town Council, so I would like an explanation as to why there was an increase from 5.8% to 8.2%.

The summary of the report is: The discrepancy is because the District Council’s charge for street lighting has increased by 39%. This charge has never previously had such a dramatic effect on the Council Tax bill. It accounts for the additional 2.4% to residents’ bills, above the 5.8% increase requested.

our helpers, and welcomed the fact that the sum of £5210.68 had been raised for the Lifeboats. The AGM noted that the RNLI has abolished house-to-house collections as from 2017, so the new Committee will be considering alternative fundraising activities to make good the 20% reduction in a typical year’s income. May we, through your periodical, ask members of the public to help by being even more generous on RNLI Flag Day in Grange on 8 July? Finally may I thank all those who generously gave time, effort or donations to the Lifeboats in 2016. Christine Blakemore, Chairman, RNLI Grange over Sands Branch.

Dear Editor, We would like to say a massive thank you to all who joined us on the evening of the 14th of March at the Victoria Hall, Grange-overSands for a conversation about the “Health and Wellbeing” of our community and how together we can make a difference in the Grange area of the Grange and Lakes Integrated Care Community (ICC). The aim of bringing the community together on the evening was to explain the Better Care Together concept and the vision of Integrated Care Communities and Community Development. During the evening suggestions were gathered on how to improve the health & wellbeing of each community to enable us to start working with communities and support community-led initiatives. The feedback received from the evening was extremely valuable and is now being pulled together in a report which will be shared with you all shortly after the Easter break. If you didn’t manage to come along to our last event we would like to remind you that there is another opportunity to give us your views and get involved at a meeting on Tuesday 9th May in the Marchesi Centre, Holly Road, Windermere from 6pm to 8pm (invitation attached). We hope that you and others will continue to support us in creating a healthier community and we look forward to working with you all. Angela Robinson Community & Integrated Care Communities (ICCs) Support Manager

Dear Editor, I have a friend since school days called Bill Bentley. Bill was retired through ill health, I had lost his telephone number, and found it again: 01539 533550. Unfortunately, the number is no longer in use. Usually he rings me, or leaves a message to call him, but I haven’t heard from him for some time.

I wonder if there is any news of Bill please, I would like to know. Kind regards, Duncan Thorburn (01623 861237)

SOCIETY ROUND-UP

Grange Forum At our AGM on March 21st Alan Anderson showed us pictures of the desolation caused at Hiroshima when the first atomic bomb was detonated in 1945. This city is now rebuilt though its dramatic extermination is recorded by monuments in the city centre visited by hundreds of thousands yearly. Our programme closed at the AGM but we have a trip arranged for Afternoon Tea at Carus Green Golf Club on May 16th at 15.00 hours. Please contact Ann Anderson for details and booking form on 015395 33696. Our summer trip this year is to the New Lanark World Heritage Site close to the Falls of Clyde. We are limited to 49 seats so people interested in joining the party need to ring Alan Anderson on 015395 33696 to secure their seat. The date for this event is June 22nd when we depart from Berners Close at 8.30am prompt, returning to Grange at 6.30 pm. We have organised a visit to the Palace Theatre on Wednesday 22nd November at 2.30 to see ‘Cilla’, leaving Berners Close at 10am. Booking forms from Ann Anderson on 33696. Please drop in for a friendly chat, to make new friends, and/or just to enjoy time together. All are welcome. For more information contact Marie on 33279. Jazz Appreciation Society April 27: The Lestorians: Probably the most “different” player of the talent-filled Swing era, Lester Young and his laid back tenor saxophone heavily influenced a new generation of young and talented musicians. Stacey and Friends: New York singer Stacey Kent came to study in London – and became a hit with the UK’s jazz enthusiasts. Country for Jazzmen: America’s Country and Western music has been cheerfully and successfully explored by some newer and notable jazz musicians. May 25 will include: ‘Exclusively for My Friends’; Praise for some later classics of pianist Oscar Peterson’s long and distinguished career. Stan Kenton Live: The great – and often controversial – leader and his powerhouse bands were well recorded live at sell-out concerts worldwide. The Decca ‘Studio’ Series: Long out of print, the Jazz Studio 1 – 6 recordings

Details of next meeting from Molly Inglis on 33141. Allithwaite & Cartmel WI April’s speaker was David Maidment from the charity Railway Children which has projects in the UK, India and South Africa helping homeless and vulnerable children who are living on the streets. The children are given food, shelter and a refuge from any would be abuser and ultimately try to unite them with their families. His thought provoking talk was very moving and members generously donated to a collection at the end of the afternoon. Next meeting: Tuesday 4th May, Allithwaite Community Centre at 2pm. Lower Holker WI At our last meeting, Joan Bentley showed how, with a little foliage and flowers, we could create quite stunning but simple floral displays. Our next meeting (Wednesday 3rd May at Holker Village Hall) will be the discussion of Resolutions, when we will discuss the two Resolutions to go forward to WI AGM in June at Liverpool. These are: (1) Alleviating Loneliness, and (2) ‘Plastic Soup’; keeping microfibers out of our Oceans. This meeting will be preceded by a Jacob’s Join lunch at 1 o’clock. Bring a packed lunch, and tea/coffee will be provided. The June meeting will be Wednesday 7th at Flookburgh Village Hall, when the subject is, ‘The history of Buttons’. Grange WI In March we had a very moving speaker – Tammy Hoskins – from the Rosemere Cancer Care. Tammy explained the history of the Rosemere Unit, based on Preston. It was established in 1997 and is the 8th largest specialist cancer unit in the UK. Members were surprised to learn that the unit is funded entirely from voluntary contributions from the public, not the NHS. Tammy told us that last year they raised over 1 million pounds and they are hoping to do even better this year as it is their 20th year. Several members attended the Federation lunch at the Villa and heard a very interesting talk by local auctioneer, Paul Laidlow who features regularly on TV’s Bargain Hunt. In May we look forward to hosting a special Group meeting and the following day discussing the Resolutions for the National AGM at Liverpool at our regular meeting. Our Secretary – Margaret Brennand – will be attending the AGM as the linked delegate for the Cartmel Valley Group. New members are very welcome at our meetings. Contact Margaret for more details on Grange 36735. Grange Ramblers 23rd March: 7 Ramblers set off from Troutbeck Church to Wansfell Pike. The walkers braved the rather cold and blustery conditions but were rewarded with spectacular views on the snow topped Fells, Stockghyll Force was impressive and the view from Jenkins Crag completed a perfect day. Afternoon tea was taken in Ings on the journey home. On 6th April, ten hardy Ramblers tackled the 9 miles and 2500 feet assent from the New Dungeon Hotel to Stickle Tarn, Sergeant Man then onto High Raise from where we could see the full length of the Lake District from Morecambe Bay to Bassenthwaite Lake. Grange over Sands Golf Club The Gents Captain had a wonderful sunny day for his Drive - In on Saturday, 25th March but unfortunately the weather changed for the Lady Captain the following Thursday. However Lady Captain did her ’Drive-In’ and then all the ladies came in for a chat with coffee/tea and most of them stayed and had lunch from our lengthy menu so in the end it turned out to be a good day. The competitions are now underway and the course is playing very well. We welcome members and visitors every day for drinks or lunches so pop in if you want to try our menus. The Open competitions are booking up nicely so if you wish to play please book your tee times either on line, through the Pro shop or through the office 015395 33180. We have Gents, Gents Seniors, Ladies and Mixed competitions throughout out the Spring and Summer months. Flookburgh Village Hall Bonus ball winners: 8th April (No 21) Jessie Crow; 1st April (No 14) Helen Procter; 25th March (No 28) Kevin Jackson;18th March (No 43) Janet Horne. Whilst we had our break through illness our new kitchen has been fitted. Osten Joinery of Barrow fitted the kitchen as we could not get any local joinery firm to do the work . Although the kitchen has been fitted the floor is yet to be laid. We are now all back to normal so any one wishing to hire the hall please get in touch with Barry on 015395 59075 or 07989 596 141. Thanks must go to Osten Joinery for their marvellous job of fitting the kitchen. Thank you to Flookburgh Over 60s club for their donation of £250 towards the new kitchen. Date for you diary: Tuesday 9th May Flookburgh Village Hall AGM at 7.30 pm. All members of the public are cordially invited to attend. It has been a most memorable year for the hall and we, as a committee, would like to share our achievements with all our friends. Have you got some spare time? Even if it’s just a couple of hours a month, why not join our committee and enjoy the workings of the hall. Mothers & Others On 4th April, eleven ladies from Grange Mothers & others left Grange by train to Silverdale to visit the RSPB at leighton Moss. It was a perfect day as the sun was shining and we saw lots of birds, ducks and some of the ladies even saw an otter. After a well deserved cuppa and cake, we returned back to Grange after a great day out. Definitely worth another visit Cartmel Peninsula Local History Society Simon Williams, chairman of Mourholme local history society, gave an interesting talk about two boating disasters in Morecambe Bay. The first in 1850 involved the North family and their guests from Know Hill Lodge, Silverdale. The family and boatmen set off for lunch in Kent’s Bank Hotel in a Lancashire Nobby but the young men and boatsmen delayed their return by visiting the bar. They drowned whilst rowing back and a verdict of accidental death was reported. In 1894 a tragedy happened during September Wakes week and its details survive due to young Fanny’s diary. A thirty three foot Lancashire Nobby called the Matchless overloaded with 34 day trippers, was being sailed single handed by Samuel Houghton from Morecambe to Kent’s Bank. The boat was caught broadside by a gust of wind at Jenny Brown’s Point and it sank in seconds. Very few could swim. Fanny 9 and her brother Ben 7 were amongst the 9 survivors.

The King’s Arms in Morecambe acted as both a mortuary and the location where the inquest was held. The landladies in Morecambe identified the bodies. The Hidden Heritage of Fell Foot by Kelley Sproston-Heath will be held in Cartmel Priory on 4 May at 7.30pm. Grange and District U3A Our AGM was on April 18th and, after the business, our member Malcolm Kimber gave his illustrated talk on “The Dales High Way” from Saltaire to Appleby. On 16th May we will hear about “Current American Politics” (an overview of American politics and recent American elections) from Joe Cravatz. Our Discussion Group will take up the theme of the current Presidency at its June meeting. The High Fells walking group undertook its most strenuous expedition for some time. Nine members completed the 3400 feet ascent of the Fairfield Horseshoe and enjoyed glorious views over Lakeland and beyond. Before starting on the new topic of “Empires and Dynasties” our General History Group heard about the “Oregon Trail” courtesy of our former Chairman Malcolm McIvor. A ‘Drop In’ event is taking place on 31st May from 2pm to 4pm at the Methodist Church Hall. Members, old and new, and prospective members are all welcome to find out more about U3A over a cup of tea or coffee. More details of U3A’s many activities and groups can be found on the Grange and District U3A website at www.u3asites. org.uk/grange, at Grange Library and on posters around the town. Arnside Sailing Club Arnside Sailing Club are taking part in RYA Push the Boat Out Day on 13th May giving people a chance to try out sailing for free. The event will be based at the slipway by the Albion and runs from 13:30 to 15:30. The clubhouse in the Old Customs House on the Promenade is open afterwards. Alasdair Simpson for the Sailing Club said “With Arnside being a short hop on the train from Grange with an off peak day return fare of £2.20, we keen to encourage more people from Grange to join the club. The club has a thriving cadet programme and offers adult training. On a high tide you can get to Holme Island, if not Grange over Sands and back. As a result of successful funding bids to Sports England, Hadfield Trust, Barnes Trust, Arnside Silverdale AONB, Cumbria County Council, Thomas Graham Grassroots Fund we are getting 5 new cadet boats, which is a massive boost.” Other local clubs taking part in the RYA Push the Boat Out Day include Coniston and Windermere Outdoor Adventure Centre, north of Bowness on 13 May and South Windermere at Fell Foot on 20 May. (see RYA or club websites for more details). Grange Probus Grange Probus Club hosted an excellent talk on, ‘Global Warming, Old and New’ by Robert McIlveen, in which he started by describing the major historical climate conditions through the Ice Ages, with more recent significant variations in the past few hundred years. He then focused on developments since the Industrial Revolution, where human activity has had particular impact on the earth’s environment and concluded that, whilst it might be difficult to prove definite links between this and adverse climatic changes, it was also impossible to disprove it. Grange Probus welcomes retired men and women and meets on the second Monday of each month at 10.30 for 11am for informative talks at the Netherwood Hotel. Further information on membership and activities are available from chairman, Chris Harris, on 015395 34221 or secretary, Sean Jameson, on 32105. Grange Lions We are again putting together a range of activities over the spring and summer months. We’ll have a stall at the Edwardian Day on 10th June, we’re running a 5 a side football competition for local schools on 13th June and our golf competition will take place on Friday 11th August. Our summer raffle will commence shortly. This year we are supporting local organisations and charities. The funds we raised from the well supported coffee morning in December have been donated to Flookburgh Village Hall to assist them in the cost of their new kitchen. We have resumed our weekly raffle at the Cumbria Grand Hotel where we raffle whisky, wine and chocolates and raise money for Jigsaw and the many local and national charities we support as well as continuing to provide educational support for orphans in Kenya. We would welcome with open arms anyone who would like to join in with our activities. We meet on the first and third Wednesday of each month and have regular social meetings in between. We also have a Friends group who support us and follow our activities. Please call me, Lion Dave Stubbins, on 07807 836591 for more information.

Could you look after the music for Flookburgh Band? Regulars to Flookburgh Band concerts cannot have failed to see percussionist Janet Horne racing round behind four timpani and around a dozen other complex instruments.

which takes time and organisation.

But what they have not seen is the equal amount of rushing around behind the scenes she has done for many years keeping the band’s music in order.

Yet modern brass band music is ever more demanding on the skills of the percussion section and Janet wants to take a break from the work as librarian to concentrate on making music. Consequently the band is looking for someone to take on the job of looking after the music.

With a library of many hundreds of pieces, each with parts for 26 or more players, it is a task

Fortunately, over the years, Janet has managed to computerise the band’s music

Do you want viewings with that? How many times have you decided on something only to find that what you get isn’t quite what you expected in the first place? Batteries not included is a common annoyance, but easily remedied – just pop to Spar for some AA’s. However, when it comes to marketing your house wouldn’t you expect an agent to provide the simple things, like accompanied viewings, as part of your service? Low cost fees heavily advertised by internet agents can be very alluring, especially when they are suggesting that they don’t charge ‘commission’. Nothing in this life comes for free and what they are really saying is we won’t charge you a percentage but we will charge you a fee! Delving deeper into the package on offer you often find that the low fees are subsidised by additional charges for standard services. So you want your viewings accompanied? That will be an additional £30-65 per viewing in some cases! And it takes, on average, 11 viewings before a sale is agreed. Do you want an experienced legal conveyancer to handle your property transaction? Best get the phone book out and find your own! Professional photographs? Can’t you take your own and send them to us? Oh, OK. Well then, we best charge you for that then. And we don’t have a brochure for your interested viewers to take away! And by the way we need your fee upfront, before your house is sold. No, sorry, it’s not refundable if you don’t sell!

Local agents have local knowledge and experience and all their fees are laid out from the start. Most of us offer professional photography, high quality marketing literature, floorplans and accompanied viewings as part of the standard service. Poole Townsend offer a service with no upfront payment, no sale – no fee and no withdrawal charge should your circumstances change. Coupled with in-house legal conveyancers whose services are included within the package on offer we provide a helping hand through the whole selling process. If you’re thinking of selling your home make sure you are getting the service that you expect. Come in and speak to us at Poole Townsend to see how we can help you or call us on 015395 33316.
