By next week the election will be over, and then we can get on to the serious business of summer holidays (and waiting for exam results).

What a summer it promises to be with festivals and shows galore, myriad local events and sunny days out to enjoy. From the Edwardian Festival to the Music in the Park, find out all about upcoming dates for the diary in our what’s on listing and on the arts and music pages.

Yet more people have visited our office to warn of scams. One of the more recent involves a bank scam where the caller asks you to call the number on the back of your card to verify their authenticity. Apparently they then stay on the line quietly listening. Another report received in the office involved a bogus lottery win. If you receive a phone call or letter that appears unusual, threatening or perhaps too good to be true, please get a second opinion from a friend or neighbour. Next month we are hoping to run a report about the Spartina grass which has receded a great deal over the last few years - we have photographs to prove it. Investigations are underway but perhaps you have some expertise here? If so please get in touch. Who know’s perhaps we will be returning to Grange-over-sands (rather than grass) in the years ahead. In what is a first for the country, our area proudly launches the UK’s first electric bike network built along a bike route this month. Combined with the train network we can offer both locals and visitors a new and unique opportunity which should bring myriad benefits to the area for many years to come.

Thousands raised for Butterfly hugs The third Joe and Connie Calling has, so far, raised over £4,342 for the Butterfly Hugs Foundation. A spokesperson for the event told Grange Now: “This year’s event was a huge success, and even the weather was on our side. The event was well supported by local bands, musicians, singers and performers, all of whom came together to make it a fun filled family day. We would like to say a huge thank you to Rachel Pocklington who was commander in chief, and first founded the event 3 years ago.” As part of this year’s fundraising event, several members of the committee, including twelve year old Hannah Bradshaw, walked the Coniston to Barrow and the Keswick to Barrow and raised over £5,000 for the foundation.

Ava and Quinn walk the Coniston to Barrow Grange Solicitor, Kelly Walsh contacted Grange Now to say how proud she is of her children, Ava and Quinn, who walked the Coniston to Barrow on Saturday 6th May. Both are pupils at Grange Primary School and as Ava and Quinn are only 9 and 8 respectively, walking the 21.1 mile course is a fantastic achievement in itself but the youngsters managed to do it in under 7 hours.

Ava and Quinn decided to do the walk, along with Mum and Dad, to raise money for the Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Charity in memory of their sister who was stillborn in 2006. Mum, Kelly, told Grange Now:

Attributed to the well-known poster artist Frank Sherwin, it is believed to have been commissioned by British Railways in 1949 to promote railway journeys to the popular Edwardian resort and was printed by Jordinson & Co Ltd.

The Victoria Hall Support Group has been formed!

Many of you may have read in previous issues about the potential formation of a ‘friends’ group for the Victoria Hall. A number of enthusiastic local residents have now formed this group and named it the Victoria Hall Support Group (VHSG). We hope to run a number of fundraising and publicity events and also increase bookings for the hall. Look out for our VHSG stall at Grange’s Edwardian Festival this year.

The new Residence Nil Rate Band (effective from 6th April 2017) could increase the inheritance you can leave for your children by up to £80,000 from April, rising to £140,000 by 2020. The residence nil rate band is in addition to the standard Inheritance Tax nil rate band, which will remain frozen at £325,000 until April 2021. The additional amount will be phased in starting at £100,000 and increasing by £25,000 a year until it reaches £175,000 in April 2020.

Pupils longlisted in national writing competition Two Grange teenagers have written their way into the final round of a national playwriting competition. Chloe M and Mollie S, Year 11 pupils at Cartmel Priory School, entered ‘Ward’ - a one act play about a couple undergoing chemotherapy - into the National Theatre’s New Views competition last month and are delighted to have been longlisted. “The writing group started with ten pupils. They met regularly to try different creative writing

techniques, explore issues that were important to them and to share ideas,” said Mrs Hauxwell, Head of English. “I was really impressed with the range of ideas that came from the group and the quality of the writing produced.” Chloe and Mollie’s play was pitted against 306 plays from 70 participating schools. “I have always enjoyed English so when I was told about the New Views competition, I was really excited to try it out!” said Chloe, “I was even more

excited when I found out we’d been longlisted.” As part of the project, the writing group was also given free tickets to see Ugly Lies the Bone at the National Theatre. A group of ten pupils travelled to London in March to do a tour of the Globe Theatre, visit the Tate Modern and watch the show. The New Views 2016 / 2017 Winning Play will be announced on Monday 5 June with performances on Tuesday 4 July in the Dorfman Theatre.

These are the maximum amounts. The available allowance will be reduced if the value of the property is less than this, or if the value of an individual’s estate exceeds £2M. Just like the standard nil rate band, the residence nil rate band will also be transferable between spouses and civil partners on death. So the allowance is not lost if the family home passes to the survivor on first death. This could mean if the second spouse dies after April 2020, a couple could benefit from a combined nil rate band of £1M (2 x £325,000 plus 2 x £175,000). It also doesn’t matter when the first spouse died or even if they owned a property at all. The first spouse may have died many years before the introduction of the residence nil rate band and the property held in the sole name of the survivor. Even so there will still be an allowance, which can be transferred to the surviving spouse. To benefit from this additional amount, the family home must pass to direct descendants - that is, children or grandchildren. And to be entitled to the full amount, clients will need to keep the value of their individual estates below £2M. Beyond this, the allowance will be reduced by £1 for every £2 over the £2M threshold, and lost altogether once values exceed £2.35M. There’s a danger that your family could miss out on the additional allowance if you haven’t put the right plans in place to deal with the family home, or if you have a large estate. But with the right planning your family may still benefit from the additional nil rate band. The comments in this Editorial are only general and should not be taken as specific advice. More than just mending fences

National Trust members and volunteers as well as nonmembers, from the Lake District Area, get together throughout the year to enjoy a wide range of interesting events and activities such as talks, walks/visits to local NT venues and coach outings which take them further afield. They also have an annual holiday. It is a great opportunity to join with likeminded people, who are really passionate about the promotion, development and preservation of the many aspects of the Trust. Have you considered joining a supporter group? Why not go along, get involved, and help raise funds which are greatly appreciated by local properties and Rangers, on behalf of the National Trust? In June, there is an outing to Quarry Bank Mill, near Manchester Airport, where much has changed since

the Association’s last visit, some five years ago. Large amounts of Lottery-funding has enabled development of the whole area including extensive restoration of the upper walled garden and the glass-houses and a new a tea room.

The July outing is to Newby Hall, designed under the guidance of Sir Christopher Wren, the elegant, Georgian home of the Crompton Family.

This year’s holiday, in September, is to North Wales and Anglesey, staying near the Menai Straits and visits will include numerous places of interest. New Moor Lane Playground, Flookburgh Moor Lane Play are holding their Annual Duck Race in Cark (near Cark Farm) at 3 pm on Sunday 4th June. Ducks can be bought the morning before on Flookburgh Square or on the day in Cark for £1 and there are cash prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. The Playground site

is now progressing well with the Car Park nearly finished and the groundworks started in preparation for installing equipment for all ages later this year. 85% of the total project cost (£170,000) has already been raised or pledged and there is now a final push to raise the remaining £25,000.

Musical equivalent of the Brownlee Brothers! Just like the Brownlee brothers, the Hui brothers are making a habit of coming out at the top of the list too. Pianists, Edmund (Y8) and his younger brother Edwin (Y4) came home from the recent South Cumbria Music Festival carrying an armload of trophies between them.

Grange’s annual Edwardian Festival is back for a fantastic 24th year on Saturday 10th June in the Park Road Bandstand Gardens. A great day out for all the family from nought to ninety!

At the Westmorland Music Festival, Edmund won the Jubilee Cup while Edwin took home the Margaret Armitage Memorial Trophy and the Mrs reade Melody Cup. Both boys also played at the outgoing Mayor, Tricia Thomas’s recent Mayor’s concert.

Grange Now has learnt that eight ducks have disappeared from Grange duck pond at a cost of £300. A volunteer carer told Grange Now: “Within fourteen days of placing fifteen new ducks, at a cost of £595, on the pond, eight were taken. Sadly, this isn’t the first time this has happened as there were two occasions during 2016 when new ducks were taken shortly after being placed on the pond.” It is not thought that this is the work of a predator as there is no sign whatsoever of any sort of attack. Due to the cost and the seriousness of the loss the police have been informed. Additionally, a reward has been offered to anyone who can provide any information in respect of the alleged theft. The breeds of the missing ducks are: Marbled Teals, Ringed Teals, European Green Winged Teal and European Pochard.

The ‘Mind, Body and Soul/Spirit’ Event which started at 10am and ended, following a ceilidh, late in the evening has raised nearly £3,000 so far. Shelley told Grange Now, “For many years I have done a charity event for different causes every year. I will be

setting up a brand name soon to create one umbrella for everything I continue to do, for everything to be part of that name and it will be for one particular cause/charity from now onwards.” More news soon.

Lottery funding takes the chill off the hall

Thanks to a £10,000 grant from the National Lottery, Lower Holker Village Hall (LHVH) has just updated the heating system in the Main Hall at a cost of £10,776 for 4 new heaters and installation costs. LHVH would like to express their gratitude for this award which has enabled them to maintain the Hall for continued use by the community. The balance of £776.00 was paid for out of the Hall’s own funds.

New health walk for Grange

On Tuesday 27th June, Age UK are starting a new weekly seated exercise class for the over 50s at the United Reform Church in Grange (2-3pm). Walking for Rosie Julia Brown from Flookburgh is organising a guided walk, to Chapel Island from Sandgate, in aid of her niece, Rosie. Julia’s sister, Sarah and her husband Stuart are doing a number of events to try and raise the £10,000 needed to renovate their home for Rosie. Born on 9th January 2014, Rosie was a normal, healthy little baby. Sarah and Stuart, who already had two boys, were delighted with the arrival of a little girl and for four months everything went along smoothly for them as a family. When she was just four months old, Rosie had a seizure while out shopping with her mum and sadly it was to be the first of many. No medication worked and the seizures continued and Rosie’s development stopped completely. Now aged 3, Rosie can’t see, sit,

can provide some funding but nowhere near enough and the family cannot afford to re-mortgage or borrow the money.

Why not help the fundraising effort while enjoying a fantastic family day out. The walk will take place on Sunday 18th June at 10am and will be followed by a BBQ, entertainment and a bouncy castle at Ravenstown Club. All this for only £10 per family.

Courgettes with their wonderful golden trumpet like flowers and runner beans deep orangey reds are a must for me, but it’s also worth growing a few other bits and bobs to add further colour. This isn’t only good for the soul making the allotment visit more pleasurable but also helps attract pollinators and other beneficial insects.

flowering is achievable if you cut them back at the start of this month, Lavender and Hyssop are both useful and attractive. If you grow Sage make sure it is a flowering variety as these are amazing at attracting bees. You can attract hoverflies whose larvae eat aphids by planting Dill, Pot Marigolds (calendula officinalis) both of which are edible, or another favourite of mine the ‘poached egg’ plant or limnanthes douglasii with it’s daisy like flowers that self seeds with abandon. Along with the plants I have mentioned and the obvious nasturtiums you can grow other edible flowers such as violas or the less well known tulbaghia violacea (pictured) or ‘Society Garlic’, so called as you can eat the garlicky flowers and leaves without offending the more polite in society. A fact I’ve unfortunately been unable to test!

The Grange in Bloom Group are continuing to improve the Station Gardens and thanks to the local Beavers Group the Golden Border was a picture this spring. Thanks to Claire and her group of Beavers (pictured) who turned up in their hi viz jackets and head torches in the dark and seemed to have great fun. A new seat has been installed in a sunny spot opposite the bus stop seems to be well used. This was kindly provided and put in place by Arriva North. In the future we are hoping to have a picnic table. The group are entering the station gardens in the It’s Your Neighbourhood award in Cumbria in Bloom again this year and we hope to be judged ‘Outstanding’ again. We held a meeting of all volunteer groups with the prospect of entering the town in to Cumbria in Bloom again. Everyone felt that we should have another year to improve the gardens and possibly enter again in 2018. If you have an area near you

that could benefit from some TLC and you’re willing to help improve it, then get in touch with Jan Tomlinson 36919. We are organising another Open Gardens again this year on Sunday 9th July from 10am to 5pm. The theme this year is ‘Town’ and ‘Secret Gardens’. All the gardens are in central Grange with a walking trail around them. The garden trail will include Park Road Gardens where weather permitting there will be Music in the Park at 2pm. Refreshments and plants will be for sale at various gardens. We hope you’ll all come and support us as the funds raised are used to improve the gardens around town.

Brown Robin nature reserve

This promises to be a great year for the reserve. The top field gets better year on year with more early purple orchids and cowslips than ever, so hopefully a better year for the butterflies like the Fritillaries. A recent second report of a Grasshopper warbler too, although it is likely passing through, but the Willow warbler can still be heard on Blawith bank. A U3A group was taken round in early March and saw a total of 13 Hawfinch, whilst myself saw 21 in one day. They are rarely seen in the summer. The coppice area is also doing well with lots of speckled woods and white butterflies and birds such as the Chiffchaff and Black cap. The cattle are on the reserve now, so if you are planning a visit please keep them on leads, alternatively you can always come on one of our scheduled walks by contacting the Cumbria Wildlife Trust on; 01539816300. The Swifts are back

Just last weekend our local population of swifts arrived to spend the summer with us. Despite a few earlier arrivals the majority seem to arrive en masse about the 5th of May each year. It is quite remarkable how they do it. The Swifts in the Community conservation groups will be active again this year, monitoring and surveying swifts and encouraging home owners, whose properties have nesting swifts, to value them and allow them to carry on using their property as a nest site. Swift numbers have reduced by nearly 50% in the last few decades, and it is thought the

loss of suitable nests sites is the main factor in their decline. Simple measures such as doing development, repair or maintenance work outside the breeding season (May to July), and leaving the access points the birds use will ensure that the birds have continued use

of their chosen locations. ‘The Swifts in the Community project’ has volunteer groups spread across South Cumbria including Grange, Arnside, Silverdale, Carnforth, Warton, Yealand, Burton, Heversham, Milnthorpe and Kendal.

Artist of the month Artist/Printmaker Tom Harforth Newby Bridge based artist/ printmaker, Tom Harforth is the subject of this month’s Artist of the Month. Tom is currently exhibiting at the Brewery Arts Centre (May 20th – July 22nd) in what is his first major solo exhibition. Are you from Cumbria Tom? I am originally from Lancashire but moved to the south lakes 16 years ago, where the surrounding countryside has provided continuing inspiration to my work. I attended John Ruskin School in Coniston; from there I went to Barrow

Sixth Form College where the honing of my artistic skills began, at A level and then on the BTEC foundation. Continuing on from this I enrolled on the Fine Art Degree course at the University of Central Lancashire. It was here where I found my niche, after exploring the visually rich urban landscape. When did you develop an interest in art and what or who first got you interested? My interest in art really began at school, where my art teacher introduced me to a wider and more abstract set of creative

skills. From there I developed my knowledge of art at Sixth Form College and that is where I discovered printmaking. I have since developed my art practice by studying fine art printmaking at the University of Central Lancashire. It was at my degree show where I was approached the Brewery Arts Centre curator Jamie Barnes, who not only asked me to exhibit my degree show but also commissioned me to produce a series of prints about the Brewery’s history, it was very fitting to my practice to respond to old photographs of the Brewery in its past states and produce a new series of artworks for my current exhibition there ‘Structure of Decay’. Where do you get your inspiration from? My subject matter revolves around the textures of decaying landscapes. Through my work I focus on the fragile, weathered and ageing characteristics of abandoned structures, natural form and surfaces. I work with scale and composition, often in contrasting modes; this is to affirm the feel and impact from the original locations. Presenting my work is an area in which I use a variety of mechanisms from the traditional frame to within archival drawers, artists’ books, to sculptural wall arrangements

and installations. With my practice I am pushing the traditional forms of printmaking and trying to test new approaches, while trying to keep the manual and analogue essence of printmaking. At what time of day do you work best? After graduating I was lucky enough to be able to set up my own studio, where I work from most days, I balance my artwork with working at the family business. It is from my studio where I have initiated, developed and produced the ‘structure of decay’ series for the Brewery. What’s next for Tom Harforth? I am currently developing my own range of hand printed wrapping papers, gift tags and postcards, influenced by the colours, textures and patterns which inspire me in my daily life and which draw on my current art practice. As well as this I am co-producing a set of joint artworks with fellow artist Tina Dempsey, the work combines our contrasting art practices. We are planning to host this exhibition later in the year. Annie’s Iona

Grange artist, Annie Southward, is coming back to Grange Library, to share her beautiful paintings in an exhibition called, ‘Annie’s Iona’. Annie told Grange Now: “This exhibition of paintings is of my most recent trip to Iona. I just love the tremendous unique light and vibrant colours of the island.” Annie manages to capture both in her wonderful seascapes which are acrylic on canvas. An eclectic mix of musical entertainment Four music groups are coming together to perform a medley of popular favourites that definitely includes something for everyone. For their special Gala concert on Friday 2nd June Grange-over-Sands and district concert club is pleased to welcome the Castalian String Quartet which is rapidly emerging as an exciting voice on the chamber music scene. Over the last three years they have won top prizes at major international competitions including third prize in the 2016 Banff International Quartet Competition where they were the only European quartet to progress to the live rounds. Of their performance the Calgary Herald reported that “They seize motives with the core of their sound and press them into a service of thematic contiguity that is enviable, like an orator who knows how to convince with both passion and persuasion. Castalian String Quartet makes the simplest things we hear into the most important things we could ever want to hear” Last year they also won the audition to be selected for representation by the Young Concert Artists Trust. Sini Simonen (violin), Daniel Roberts (violin), Charlotte Bonneton (viola), and Christopher Graves (cello) will perform String quartets by Beethoven, Bartok and Brahms. The Gala concert starts at 8pm in the Victoria Hall, Grange on Friday 2nd June. Admission is £12 which includes a drink and canapés.

Two new faces are Taking Steps with Grange Drama There will be two new members stepping onto the stage for Grange Drama when they perform the Ayckbourn farce, ‘Taking Steps’ at the Victoria Hall later this month. Mark Payne, fresh from his role as Luther Billis in South Pacific, takes on the role of ‘Leslie’, a dodgy builder on the verge of financial ruin who is desperate to sell the house to Roland, played by Steve Pollard. Howard St Quinton also joins the group and takes on the part of ‘Tristram’ Roland’s ineffectual and unassertive solicitor who manages to cause absolute havoc throughout. Held in the same week as the snap General Election, Taking Steps promises to be more than a little light relief and certainly well worth a viewing.

The staff at Fish over Chips in Grange were absolutely delighted when they were told that their chippy had been voted as being in the top ten in the UK. In February this year, organisers of the competition, Fry Magazine, sent secret diners out to chips shops all over the country. The chip shop is run by father and daughter team, Rob and Farrah Sanbrook and they told Grange Now, “We were in complete shock when we were told because we knew nothing about it. We were told we had scored 100% on the quality of the food, cleanliness and service and only lost points on trivial things such as no wifi or staff name badges.”

County Matters

I would like to thank everyone for their support at the County Elections last month when I was returned with a much increased majority. While I was on the doorstep I picked up a number of issues residents wished me to address and over the next few weeks I will be dealing with these.

Good news Grange Town Council has agreed to continue supporting the Saturday 532 bus service and with the continued support from the other three Parish Councils in the Peninsula we will see this service run again

for the next twelve months. At a recent meeting of the County Council we had a presentation on public health which emphasised not just the physical aspects of health but also the importance of mental health in promoting a healthy lifestyle. Dementia is on the increase in our county and we need to make our Towns and villages more dementia friendly which will help with bringing this issue to our attention. We need to be able to signpost people early to services which will help maintain as healthier lifestyle as long as possible. The issue which stands out as a major problem in the public

Electrifying cycling around Morecambe Bay! In what is being hailed as a first in the country, a brand new electric bike network, run by local businesses, is launching around Morecambe Bay this summer.

It provides the perfect way to explore the villages, towns, countryside and coastline of Morecambe Bay with the assistance of an electric bike without the strain of steep inclines or having to break a sweat! It uses the Visit England Award winning Bay Cycle Way (NCN700) as the main spine of the Network, with hire and charge points located around the Bay, from the Furness Peninsula to Lancaster, making it what is believed to be the UK’s first long distance cycle route that is accessible by electric bike. It is hoped the new network will open up cycling around the Bay to a wider range of people such as those who are new or returning to cycling, and those who lack confidence or feel that their fitness is not up to exploring the area on a

traditional bike. It will also bring additional business to local cafes, accommodation providers and attractions in the area. Electric bike hire and charge points will be available at Gleaston Water Mill (Furness), Velo Bikes (Ulverston), Coal Yeat Cottages (Broughton Beck), Lake District Bikes (Lowick), Witherslack Bunk Barn (near Grange) and many others. St. Mary’s Church The Big Breakfast event which was held by St Mary’s church Allithwaite on Saturday 20th May, in aid of Christian Aid. This was a huge success thanks to a great team effort. Organisers would like to thank everyone who baked, served on the day and, of course, attended the event. £469.05 was raised for Christian Aid.

St Peter’s, Field Broughton On Thursday 29th June, St Peter’s Field Broughton celebrates St Peter’s Day with a weekend of events at the church. Our congregation will join with St Peter’s Finsthwaite for a service at Finsthwaite at 6pm in the evening on the 29th with refreshments afterwards. Grange Methodist Lively activity was evident at the Methodist Church in Grange on the Wednesday of Christian Aid Week, when there was a very busy coffee morning. Cartmel Priory School

Cartmel Primary A whole school Sewing Bee afternoon brought together pupils, staff and members of the local community to work on embellishments for our next worship cloth.

Cartmel Priory School was subject to an Ofsted inspection in late March. I am pleased to confirm that the school maintained its’ rating of ‘Good’.

The inspectors praised numerous aspects of the school’s work and the Ofsted report is extremely positive, with much to celebrate. The ethos of the school in which every pupil is valued and respected was noted, as well as the good manners and behaviour of the students.

The school’s academic success was recognised, as was the culture of high aspiration. This is not surprising given the progress data for GCSE exams the school has achieved over a number of years. You may also recall the school was the highest performing school in Cumbria in terms of pupil progress when performance tables were published in January. The report also recognised the school’s outstanding pastoral support, commitment to the individual child and the effectiveness of work done to help safeguard young people. Comments relating to safeguarding controls were particularly pleasing as this is an area under particularly close scrutiny from Ofsted at present.

We were fortunate to secure a donation from the Michelle Jurd memorial Trust which can be used to promote participation in the arts. We invited local artist, Hannah Fox, to commission an art piece encompassing our values.

Y6 worked incredibly hard on their challenging assessments, they showed such determination and maturity and we’re extremely proud of them all. They finished the week with an ice cream at the park.

Y 5/6 Tennis team competed at Cartmel Priory. The atmosphere was wonderful and showed credit to our cluster.

Grange Primary The end of the Spring term saw a visit from Imran Kotwal. He spoke to the whole school about the Islamic faith and then completed workshops, looking into worship, artefacts and respect. The short summer term began with an opportunity for all the juniors and parents to have a go at Wheelchair Basketball. It was great to listen to the achievements the team and individuals made as well as have a go ourselves. A really enjoyable experience! The Tri golf team who took part in the cluster event came 2nd and 3rd in the Y3/4 and Y5/6 competitions. Our hockey team made it to the partnership hockey competition where they came 4th. In tennis, our four teams took part in the cluster mini tennis competition coming 1st

and 2nd in Y3/4 and 2nd and 4th in Y5/6. Well done to all our sports teams! Year 6 visited London and the Houses of Parliament to explore the concept of democracy as well as see the sights. They were a credit to the school in their mature attitude and behaviour. SATs took place for Years 2 and 6. All the children have worked really hard, and we are really proud of the sensible and mature manner in which they completed their tests.

Lindale Primary Our Year 6 group celebrated the successful completion of their SATs tests with ice creams at the Park this week! They have all worked incredibly hard and are fantastic role models to the rest of the school. They are now looking forward to their residential in the Western Lake District, a visit to London and lots of sporting events before moving on to their secondary schools. Both Year 3&4 and 5&6 teams were very successful; winning the tri-golf competition, they will represent the Cartmel Peninsula in the South Lakes competition later this month. The children have created a ‘Day in the life of Lindale School’ video to be taken to show children in Zululand as part of a Diocesan visit, in the

hope of establish an ongoing link with a school there. Next week is a special ‘Reading week’ in school. As well as having lots of opportunities to spend time reading some of the lovely new books we have bought, the children will be dressing up as favourite book characters and having a visit from an author. The children who stay for our fun club are loving using the outdoors more now that the weather has improved; making dens and inventing games.

SOCIETY ROUND-UP Grange Forum We are pleased to announce the appointment of a new Club Secretary, Paul Ramsden, who will took over on 1st May. As announced in the last edition of Grange Now, we have arranged a day trip to the New Lanark World Heritage Site, near to the Falls of Clyde. This takes place on June 22nd, a Thursday. The coach leaves Berners Close at 8.30 am prompt returning to arrive back in Grange at 6.30 pm. Only a few tickets remain on this trip. Sensible shoes recommended for viewing the Upper Clyde Falls. For our trip to Manchester Palace Theatre to see ‘Cilla’ on Wednesday, November 22nd, we have 8 seats remaining. Cost for this outing is £37.50. Cartmel & District Flower Club Meeting A well attended meeting enjoyed seeing Debbie Davies from Formby demonstrate on the topic ‘Through my Garden Gate’. Beautiful flowers and some lovely wooden items including trellis and a spinning wheel were used to create spectacular displays reflecting areas of Debbie’s own garden. She also entertained us with fascinating tales of her world travels and varied occupations, starting as a professional ballet dancer then venturing into other styles of dance, some using fire hoops and flaming props on stage. At one time Debbie worked as a make-up artist on the Harry Potter films, before becoming involved with flower demonstrating. A vote of thanks was given by Jackie Bailey and some lucky ladies won the wonderful flower displays in the raffle. The next meeting will be at Cartmel Village Hall at 2pm on Monday 15 May when Vanessa Wellock from Ilkley will demonstrate on the theme ‘This is me’. Dianne Cameron, Secretary Grange Garden Society In April, Brenda Austin talked to the society about A Year in a Cumbrian Garden. Her enthusiasm and humour combined with a fascinating study of her subject made for a very enjoyable evening. Brenda’s home is a 16th Century Farmhouse which at the time of purchase had a large garden suffering from five years of neglect .She has researched the plants which would be most at home in her garden throughout its’ long history and has amassed a wealth of knowledge about both edible and decorative plants. The reading of appropriate extracts from books of verse and prose from many sources and periods added to the interest as well as at times causing some amusement.

The restoration of the rock garden, above Yewbarrow Lodge, attributed to Thomas Mawson, is progressing well. The Group is planning to hold an exhibition of ‘Now & Then’ photographs of Grange and the surrounding area, in conjunction with archive material from other groups and societies, from Monday 7th August to Friday 11th August in the Victoria Hall between 10am and 4pm: After which, part of it will move to the Library from the 14th August to 25th August. The 17th Annual General Meeting of the Group will be held on the 8th June at 2pm in the Victoria Hall to which all are welcome. Grange Rotary Are you an active retiree, possibly new to the area, or a local working person with some spare time? North Lonsdale Tennis Club The Tennis season is in full swing now with the courts regularly in use, and thanks to the lovely light evenings, the floodlights less so. We started the season with an American Mixed Doubles Tournament where everyone plays everyone with different partners. The well deserved winners were Alison Butler and Bill Gill with a sociable club picnic following the event. A club open day was held on 30th April which was well attended and our ‘Back to tennis Saturdays’ continued through May for players returning to the game after life got in the way. We have added a second Mens team this year so are fielding 4 teams (mens 1&2, ladies and mixed) in the Kendal league and are more than holding our own so far despite being snowed off the court in Sedbergh. Passers by our courts on Yew Tree Playing fields may have noticed the new green screens on the court surround netting. These help with sighting and work as partial windbreaks and are not due to a sudden outbreak of shyness. Our turn up and play social sessions have been well attended and continue on Tuesday, Fridays and Sunday. The junior section continues to thrive with around 50 members. Grange over Sands Golf Club The weather has been extremely favourable the last few weeks and we are getting a lot of run on the ball which is shown in some of the competition scores. We have welcomed several visiting parties this month and they are really enjoying the course and also the food served all day.

Some are coming for their first visit while others return every year to enjoy the flat but challenging course. Many of these parties book from one year to the next. Grange and District U3A In May Joe Ravatz (originally from Pennsylvania) spoke about current American politics under the title “The Disfiguration of American Democracy and the post truth society”. He explored the background to the election of President Trump and how the “politics of fear” has come to dominate over “the politics of hope”. Lies and slogans have replaced evidence and rational discourse. On June 20th we welcome Jean Scott-Smith to the Victoria Hall and hear about the loss of Mardale as it became the Haweswater reservoir. The recent fine weather provided an excellent context for the “Out and About” group visit to Hadrian’s Wall where we explored the Roman Army Museum and Vindolanda Fort. The “Local Explorers” had sun for the visit to the Midland Hotel and the Winter Gardens at Morecambe. The weather smiled on the Geology Group’s study of the area near Cautley Spout on the edge of the Howgills. For the first time for many years we are having a stand at the Edwardian Festival – see us there. Grange Soroptimists The Club welcomed their new President Mary Ann Harris and congratulated Immediate Past President Lesley Smyth on her successful year, with the achievement of both service involving Singing for Memory and the Sensory Garden and fundraising of over £4,500 for charities. The charities supported were Partners in Education Swaziland, International Justice Mission, Medecins sans Frontieres, Handicap International, WaterAid, Breast Cancer Care, St Mary’s Hospice, Lepra, Days for Girls, Butterfly Hugs, NW Air Ambulance, Grange Primary School, ShelterBox and Toilet Twinning. with her usual expertise in flowering arranging and her wonderful anecdotes, gave a most enjoyable demonstration to supporters of the NSPCC. On behalf of the NSPCC, we would like to thank her very much for the time and effort she puts into this local charity, and also to thank everyone who came and those who helped to raise the grand sum of £450. We are most grateful. SInce the end of March we have raised £1,339.47 through the following: flower demonstration - £450; gifts in memory of loved ones - £ 460.00; collecting boxes in shops, etc - £47.58; Sponsorship from the Coniston “14” mile run, via Cameron Finn - £160; and finally, a street collection in Grange on Saturday, 6th May - £221.89. Grange Probus Grange Probus Club’s monthly guest speaker was Dr Stephen Caunce, who gave a fascinating talk on “Hiring Fairs”. These events were a common rural feature from the 18th to the early 20th centuries and comprised gatherings of young single men and women offering themselves for employment mainly on farms. The contractual arrangements were quite fair, and many prudent labourers were able to save enough money to buy their own farms by the time that they married and settled down in their late 20s. The club’s next meeting will be on Monday, June 12th when Derek Jackson will talk about “the Power of Speech”. These are ‘loneliness’ and ‘Plastic Soup’ (or Oceanic pollution). We look forward to the AGM report. Cartmel Peninsula Local History Society Kelly Spronston-Heath from the National Trust gave a fascinating talk about the history of Fell Foot. In the 15th century the land belonged to the Canons of Cartmel Priory. Following the reformation it passed to the Duchy of Lancaster. By the early 18th century it was a prosperous farm but in 1784 the Robinson family, yeoman farmers, sold it to Jeremiah Dixon a business man from Leeds.In 1813 it was bought by Francis Duckinfield Astley, an industrialist from Manchester. Both these owners enlarged the house, creating a substantial villa and a landscaped park. Col J G P Ridehalgh, an entrepreneur from Manchester, purchased the estate in 1859. He extended the house, added a gas house and boathouses, and created an arboretum. He was a JP, Col in the Border Regiment, founder member of the

Windermere Yacht Club and had steam yachts. Oswald Hedley acquired the estate in 1907. He demolished the house, planning to replace it but abandoned the scheme and the estate.In 1948 Oswald’s widow gave the land to the National Trust. The NT initially leased it for camping and caravanning but took back full management in 1969. The Trust is now planning a major revamp with a water sports base and an interpretative centre. Coffee Club At our April meeting, Anthony Thompson told us about his experience in June 2011 when after his appendix had been removed satisfactorily, he collapsed in the recovery ward and, despite every effort, appeared to be dying. His surgeon told him “We don’t know what’s wrong and there is a distinct possibility you will die here today,” His only hope was further surgery and the surgeon told him later that he had died five times during the operation. Anthony remembers being in a ‘place of absence– no people, no light, no dark, no smell, nothing oppressive and he asked right out “God, am I going to die here?’ He received the surprising response “I don’t know, what do you fancy?” as if God was entirely in charge, caring, but not troubled either way. After consideration, Anthony said “I would choose to stay, please.” The voice said “Right! On you go then.” After a few stormy days, he eventually made a full recovery and is now back at work as a professional trumpeter. On June 20th, Mark Instone of Urban Saints will talk about how, though this summer’s programme of activities, young people can be prepared for their life’s work as future leaders. Her talk was called ‘ A visit to Grandma’s Attic’ and to tie in with this title we had our very first competition with members bringing items on the theme of ‘Grandma’. One member even brought in her grandma’s wedding dress. In

early May a group of members had a great day out at Muncaster Castle – taking the train up to Ravenglass and walking through the woods up to the Castle. The weather was glorious – lots of sun and blue skies – perfect for afternoon tea in the courtyard café and lots of ice creams. We will have a stall at the Edwardian Festival on 10 June so do come to visit us and buy some or our tempting home baked scones, cakes and biscuits and our chutneys and jam. Our speaker in June is set to deliver an inspirational talk about how it is never too late to change your life. New members are very welcome at our meetings. Grange Ramblers 12th April, 12 walkers set out from the Strickland Arms to walk through Brigsteer Woods where the spring flowers were much admired, through Barrowfield and onto the Scar lunch was taken and back by Helsington Church and Sizergh Castle. 19th April, 15 Ramblers walked the Claife Heights, Latterbarrow, Moss Eccles Tarns, Far Sawrey before refreshments in The Cuckoo Brow Hotel. There was cool breeze over Latterbarrow during lunch break with panoramic views surrounding Fells and stunning view of Wise Een Tarn. 27th April, a dull/ damp day 9 walkers took train to Lancaster, alongside Water Witch by the canal we dodged cyclists/ runners and dog walkers, soon all left behind, few boats using the canal that day but we saw ducks with ducklings, swan sitting eggs and a distant Heron. after lunch the weather improved, break was taken at canal side pub in the sun and all the way to Carnforth. 12th May, 6 Ramblers tackled 1500 feet total ascent of Wansfell Pike and Ridge. The walk took place despite the forecast threat of rain but were fortunate that the rain didn’t start until 3 pm. The group rewarded with the panoramic views in good weather at the top of fell. Grange Fell Golf Club Competition season now in full swing and the course looking good, and has benefited from the recent rain here is summary of our results. Carlsberg Singles was played on Sunday 23rd April winner as Alan Paisley with a 67 net, next competition a Stableford was the Coronation Trophy won by Nathan Higginson with 35 pts, the next Competition was the George Airey Trophy a Greensome Foursomes won by Nigel Higginson and Dave Robb with a 64.5 net. On Wednesday 10th May we played our first Mid Week Medal qualifier for the James Crowe Bowl, winner was Jes Woodhouse with a 67 net, beating Robert Moore on a card play off, the following Sunday we played for the Barry Newton Trophy a Stableford competition and Lombard Qualifier won by Graham Wilson with 43pts who now goes forward to play at Moortown Leeds on Thursday 8th June with our Pro Ernie Foster.

Carol Campbell was the winner of the Ladies Medal 2, runner up was Ellie Woodburn, Peugeot Pairs winners were Ruth Waring and Ellie Woodburn, runners up were Ronnie Hall and Jill Atkinson. We held our Open on Thursday 4th May in testing conditions won by visiting pair S Garner and D Garner with 45 pts, second was A Coyles and B Wilkinson with 42 pts. Mothers & Others

On 18th April, Richard Matthews, the Kendal Town Crier was the Speaker. He arrived looking resplendent in his full regalia. A slideshow depicting events he had attended in his official capacity was followed by a question and answer session on his role as a Town Crier. This was a very enjoyable evening. On 2nd May, Colin Milner stepped in at the drop of a hat as the planned speaker was unable to do so.

He showed slides taken on a family holiday in Yellowstone National Park which covers the states of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho. A commentary of the beautiful scenery, flora and fauna was enjoyed by the members. On 16th May, The AGM was followed by supper at ‘Fish over Chips’. An exciting year ended with our AGM when we gathered for our usual feast of nibbles, expertly created and then devoured, by society members. We’ll have a stall at the Edwardian Day on 10th June, we’re running a 5 a side football competition for local schools on 13th June and our golf competition will take place on Friday 11th August. Our summer raffle will commence shortly. This year we are supporting local organisations and charities. We are in the planning stages of organising another Grange Bake Off to raise funds for Victoria Hall to be held on 15th July. Our dear friends Barbara and Reg Brown, supporters of Jigsaw, the children’s hospice, invited us to their house for a very pleasant social evening. We were also in attendance at the St George’s Day fair where we helped behind the scenes.

Dear Editor For several years Grange United Reformed and Methodist churches have been working together.

From June 4th all of their Sunday services will be shared. In June in the Methodist building in July in the United Reformed Church building and so on. Before too long the congregations will have to choose which building to use for their future united work. When the churches decide which building to use they will want to invest in making the buildings fit for present and future use. The needs of the church have changed over the years and the many and varied community use of the buildings were not planned for when the buildings were erected. The churches are inviting anyone in the Grange community who would like to

Dear Editor, I nearly wept at the poor turnout for the Morecambe Brass Band concert in Victoria Hall on May 6th. There were barely as many in the audience as in the band. Bar a handful of U3A members, the others I spoke to came from across the bay to support the band;

two from Bolton-le-Sands and two from Milnthorpe who were patrons. They must have been very upset by Grange’s showing. I thought we were supporting the Victoria Hall in all its efforts to survive. Morecambe Bay Band are very good, go and hear them on the bandstand on 11th June.

Dear Sir, The proposed neighbourhood plan is now open for public consultation. I am sure the vast majority of residents will not read the full weighty document and therefore miss the small print (appendix 3 Community Aspiration) which lists as an option, converting the promenade and the very narrow footpath to Kents Bank as a “movement route” for those cycling by enhancing the cycling experience and improve the National Cycle Route 70 (Walney to Weir) and the Bay Cycle Way. This option if adopted, will destroy the whole “ambiance” of the promenade and narrow footpath which is planned to be part of the new coastal footpath for the area,

enjoyed for over 100 years and take trade away from the town.

Residents have never been consulted to gauge local opinion regarding this option and despite being informed by the Access Officer at Cumbria County Council the footpath is too narrow and dangerous in places to allow cycling has remained in the plan.

Sensible achievable new options are welcomed in the plan but not those suggesting the route could provide a walking/cycling route involving steep hills and 38 steps for very young children and mothers with prams from Kents Bank new developments to Grange school and lighting the extended route to Kents Bank as essential. Grange Now asked the Neighbourhood Plan Committee if they had a response to Mr Woods’ letter. Mr. Woods has raised this several times with the Steering Group and Grange Town Council. We took his comments on board last month . Following advice from the Cumbria County Council Rights of Way Officer, we changed the Plan to say that any improvements would be solely to improve access for walkers (ie not cyclists) to the stretch in question. We apologise if this is not clear to other readers of the Draft Neighbourhood Plan and will look to reword that section more plainly in the final version. The idea has been included in the Aspirations section of the Plan so that it is on our ‘wish list’ if any finance or support becomes

available in future. We would be looking at waiting until the route of the National Coastal Access Path is in place for this stretch, then taking the advice of the Public Rights of Way Officer about the best way to improve access for pedestrians, possibly through improved signage, or repairs to the path.
