‘Bring me sunshine,’ so the song goes. What better place to be at this time of year than right here where we live. Great views, friendly people and a stunning countryside to enjoy. The promenade is a beautiful place to walk along, but the saltmarsh beyond is downright dangerous. With the recent sunny weather, there have been a number of people heading out beyond the grass and of course where one person goes, others will follow. With the school holidays just around the corner it is worth passing on this quote taken from The Bay Search and Rescue facebook page, relating to an incident that happened only yesterday. “At 14:54hrs today the team was paged by HM Coastguard with reports of a person and dog stuck in the quicksand at Grange-over-Sands. Three BSAR teams were deployed, along with Furness Coastguard and Arnside & South Lakes Coastguard Rescue Team. ...... a local resident who walks on the marshes and sands regularly, which just shows how dangerous the sands can be, even when familiar with them.” Talking of the bay, we finally managed to find an expert who can tell us what is really happening with the grass in the foreshore. Read all about it on page 8. Don’t miss the delightful photographs on page 13 which celebrate the many celebrations taking place at Cartmel Priory - congratulations to all of those involved. Allithwaite pupils take all three top spots In a national ‘Design a Drone’ competition, which attracted over 1700 entries, pupils at Allithwaite Primary managed to take First, Second and Third place. Representatives from Amazon and the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), who organised the competition, visited the school on Wednesday 20th June to announce the winners. The winning entry came from Orrin, with Alesha and Iggy taking second and third. Parents of the winners were told beforehand and they turned up at school for the presentation but the children didn’t know anything about it until Av Raichura, from Amazon, and Jonathan Nicholson, from the CAA, announced the winners at a school assembly. The children were asked to design a model delivery drone using materials found in their everyday lives. The winning entries were chosen for their creativity, application of science and the benefit the drone would bring to society. Orrin’s winning design, was of a weather-proof ZIP drone which can fly at speeds of 70mph. It is made from recycled rubber and you download and use an app from your phone to order from it. His incredible first prize consisted of: £1000 cash donation to the school for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering,
Mathematics) resources, and a gift basket containing a Fire tablet and a basket full of STEM books and resources worth £200. Alesha and Iggy both won a basket full of STEM books and resources worth £50. As regional winner, Orrin now goes forward into the national competition and should his design win that round he and five friends will be taken on a tour of the Amazon Prime Air Lab, along with five friends.

Over the past few years Mollie has had huge support from some wonderful carers who have attended through wind, rain and snow, both day and night to help keep her comfortable at home in Grange. Now Mollie has a daughter with her at all times, the team of carers provide continuity and comfort. Though frail she remains young at heart and still enjoys a good song, always joining in and, if she forgets the words, happily making up new ones to fit the tune.

Structural Engineers assess the lido

We attended a seminar by Invesco Perpetual at the beginning of June with regards to global economies but with a focus on the UK. A very interesting element was the outlook for UK interest rates. As we know, Bank of England base rate fell to 0.5% in March 2009 over 8 years ago. It then fell yet further to just 0.25% in August last year. Invesco’s predictions for future movements were not inspiring:- a rise to 0.5% by the end of 2018 and to 0.75% by 2020. If that transpires then a generation of borrowers will have had over a decade of ultra- low mortgage rates and will never have it as good again. Sadly it is the exact opposite for savers. The use of monetary policy by government (interest rates and quantative easing) is reaching the end of its’ cycle with fiscal policy (tax and spending cuts) the next phase. Exactly how government addresses this we wait and see. From an investment perspective all one can do is be aware of the bigger picture but focus on your own situation and objectives. You may have noticed throughout June, that the former outdoor pool in Grange has had more people on-site than the usual weekly inspection that takes place. Grange Now contacted SLDC for an update to find out the latest. Structural engineers have been on-site to assess the structures and buildings, to document any further deterioration to the site.
This included pumping the water out of the vast sea tanks that sit under the old diving board structure, which were used historically to fill the pool, so that access could be gained to the tanks for the structural engineers to assess the site in its entirety, as well as the buildings on the periphery of the site.
A public consultation in January and February this year showed that more than 50% of residents and businesses in Grange wanted to see the site restored safely to allow access to the public, who have not been able to access the site since the pool closed in 1993.
The report will be finalised in late summer, which will form the basis of the next steps for the site, with the aim refurbish the buildings and bring the site back

On Thursday 15th June, several banners were taken down from the railings beside Grange duck pond. The banners were rolled up and placed on the ground but a banner for the Prom Recreation Ground appears to have disappeared. Town Council are
searching the hedge before making a complaint to the police. The banners were in place on Thursday morning at 7.20am but had disappeared by 8am. If you know anything about this incident please could you contact Grange Town Council in the first instance.

Earlier in the year, Grange Now published an article about local legend, Jean Malkin, taking on the challenge of swimming 70 tarns and lakes in this, her 70th year. Well she’s halfway there, with just 35 left to do before the 14th October (Jean’s birthday) deadline. Jean told Grange Now, “The record to date is 5 swims in one week, but it’s time for a holiday now, then back to it for the remaining 35. Cordgrass at Grange – will it disappear? Cordgrass, or Spartina anglica as it is known to botanists, is a relatively new species which appeared as a vigorous hybrid in the 1800s, a cross between a small British type and an American cousin, brought in the ballast of ships to Southampton. Over the 20th century the plants spread northwards around the British coast, arriving in Morecambe Bay in the late 1960s. Then, the Kent channel was close to the shoreline at Grange and the depth of the channel ensured that no saltmarsh could develop. When the channels switched to the Silverdale side and began to erode the large saltmarsh there, beach levels rose on the Grange side and conditions were perfect for saltmarsh growth. Cordgrass, as a pioneer species, took advantage and rapidly expanded at Grange and Kents Bank, where the young saltmarsh extended nearly a mile from the promenade. As the sediment built up and sheep grazing began on the marsh, other species began to replace cordgrass and the biodiversity

2007 increased, with species like reed and club rush dominating areas towards Kents Bank and sea meadow grass creating a green turf, like the other grazed saltmarshes around Morecambe Bay. The fact that Grange was now no longer ‘over sands’ was a concern to local people, so South Lakeland Council and the then Nature Conservancy Council looked at the feasibility of controlling the spread. The result was a policy of ‘Working with Nature’, to look at the positives, which were that a new habitat had been created. Walkers on the old ‘sands’ will recall that the silt levels in the sand were such that it was not a pleasant experience to walk on the beach anyway. The saltmarsh was left to develop and sheep grazing was introduced.

2017 However, at the end of the 1980s the river channel began to cut back into the saltmarsh and a sharp erosion edge could be seen all along the front south from Holme Island. This has continued, until now there is only a 60-80 metre fringe of saltmarsh along the Grange shore, but still considerably more at Kents Bank and down to Humphrey Head. The areas to the south are unlikely to be cut right back to the shoreline, but at Grange it is possible that from the railway station to the baths there could be very little saltmarsh remaining if the rate of erosion continues. Air photos from the 1968 Huntings survey for the Morecambe Bay Barrage project show the main channel close to the shore all the way to Humphrey Head, so optimistically this could happen again. Some areas
of saltmarsh would remain in corners at Holme Island and Wyke farm. In conclusion, the river channel could complete its work and scour right back to the railway embankment. The downside of that will be the lack of beach on the Grange side and the loss of the tall plants such as reed and club rush which are potentially very attractive to birds. Grange will never have a truly sandy beach, because estuarine conditions favour a fairly high level of fine silt. In due course the Kent channel may revert to the Silverdale side and then the colonising grasses will return. This is part of the natural dynamics of the Bay. Open air theatre at Brantwood
Don’t miss Cartmel Show This year’s action packed show will take place on Wednesday 2nd August, and there’s a few ‘firsts’ for this year’s event. Organisers are delighted to announce that local chefs, including Simon Rogan, will be cooking up some mouth watering delights in the food theatre. They are also delighted to welcome, for the first time, Beetham Nurseries.
This year, the ever popular touring company, Illyria, returns to Brantwood with two classic productions
Shakespeare’s “A Comedy of Errors” on Tuesday 25th July and Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Emperor’s New Clothes” on Tuesday 22nd August. The performances take place in Brantwood’s scenic lakeside meadow, and Terrace Café Chef, Ben Willan, will be preparing some delicious pre-theatre food for the event. This is the third year for the event which has proved so popular in the past that they have decided to donate some of the proceeds to a local charity called ‘Growing Well’ from Low Sizergh.
£1 of the £3 entrance fee will go to the charity. Organisers say that as well as selling plants, vegetables, fruits, cakes, cordials, sandwiches there will also be a raffle and, at the time of going to press, they are hoping for a license which will enable them to sell Pimm’s and wines on the day.
Open Gardens event
Just a reminder that we are organising another Open Gardens again this year on Sunday July 9th from 10am to 5pm. The theme this year is Town and Hidden Gardens – all the gardens are in central Grange with a walking trail around them. As parking is often difficult on Grange’s roads the tour of the gardens will be easy to access from Grange’s car parks – it is only £1.20 all day at Berners Car Park. Tickets will be available £4 in advance from TIC and £5 on the day from TIC and participating gardens. The garden trail will include Park Road Gardens and Sensory Garden where, weather permitting, there will be Music in the Park at 2pm. Refreshments and plants will be for sale at various gardens. We hope you’ll all come and support us as the funds raised are used to improve the gardens around town which I’m sure you’ll agree make Grange a special place to live and help attract visitors.
Judging for Grange in Bloom Awards will take place the week starting Monday July 31st. The actual day of judging will be dependent on the weather and commitments of the judges. We hope that as many businesses as possible will put up hanging baskets or floral displays. We realise that watering and feeding them can be a problem especially in hot or windy weather but as a general rule the larger the basket the easier it is to maintain and taking them down to immerse in a bucket of water helps. We are also hoping that shops will create floral window displays. The Hospice shop have already decided to do so and we will judge the window displays if enough businesses take part.

On 15 June, 16 Grange Ramblers set off on the Annual Coach Outing.
This year’s walk was a 7 mile ramble in Wensleydale from Aysgarth Falls to Castle Bolton and back. The walk started with refreshments in the cafe at the Aysgarth Falls Information Centre before setting off via the lower Falls and along the valley floor to Castle Bolton. A picnic lunch was taken close to the Castle with fine views back down the valley before setting off on the return leg to Aysgarth Falls via Carperby. The walk ended as it had begun with refreshments once again being taken in the Aysgarth Falls cafe.

We are delighted to announce that as from next month Grange Ramblers are going to do a column featuring a ‘walk of the month’ giving details and photos of a walk you may like to try yourself.
July is usually the driest month of the year and, dependant on which forecast you read, this summer could be especially dry, so watering is of paramount importance this month. Keep on top of the weeds by hoeing so the the weeds don’t snaffle away the moisture. The sun’s heat shrivels the weeds away so there’s no chance of them re-rooting.
Brown Robin nature reserve We are currently working on a new management plan for the next 5 years and have recently undertaken fixed point photography around the whole reserve. This gives an insight as to how the reserve is changing over long periods of time. We may even use a drone, to help with mapping, for managing the woodland areas. We are also looking into expanding the coppice in the compartment to create more diversity.
The top fields are doing well with mainly Orchids spreading all over, and areas where we removed scrub are now replaced with more wild flora such as bird’s foot trefoil and pignut. A second report of a Grasshopper
warbler passing through is welcome news and highlights the importance of the reserve for migratory birds.
On a more serious note, one of the cattle on the reserve was recently mauled by a dog and had to be removed from site. We have put new signs on the access gates, but please, when visiting the reserve with your dog keep it on the lead, especially
during the summer months. On Sunday 16th July, weather permitting, I will be running a guided walk looking at all aspects of the reserve, but specifically the butterflies of Brown Robin. Booking is essential. Please call: 01539 816300 Tony Saunders hon res mgr.

Mulches are a good way to keep as much moisture in the soil as possible. This can be old compost, grass clippings or even old newspapers. Wood chippings can be useful for this and are a great soil conditioner but they must be composted for a few months beforehand as they have a tendency to leach nitrogen from the soil as they break down and can affect your plants’ development. It might also be worth scattering a few slug pellets before you mulch as slugs and snails will seek shelter under the moist mulch oasis.
Water retaining gel can be useful if you incorporate a couple of sprinkles into the soil when planting out, it can be especially useful if you have tomatoes in hanging baskets as these tend to dry out very quickly and will need to be watered twice a day otherwise. Follow the instructions. Is can be tempting to add a couple of extra scoops but if there is a downpour you can find your seedling wobbling around on top of a spawny, wobbly jelly. In some countries gardeners leave small depressions around the base of their shrubs for any rain or water to pool around the plants so this could be a good idea to try around your soft fruit bushes or trees.
Whatever measure that you decide to take none of them can save you from having to water at all so when you do make sure you do it effectively. If you have a hosepipe at your allotment try only to water in the cooler part of the morning or in the evening. If you’re restricted to using watering cans get an extra one or borrow one from a neighbour and cut your number of journeys to the tap by half unless you’re training for an arm wrestling championship or require one particularly long arm for some reason.

Crop for the Shop This month sees the launch a new initiative at Low Sizergh Barn: Crop for the Shop.
We’re looking for home, school or allotment growers who have an overabundance of fresh produce and want to avoid wasting any of their harvest by bringing spare fruit, veg, herbs or flowers to us. And it doesn’t have to be huge amounts, it could just be a couple of cabbages. In exchange for their lovely produce we’ll give them a gift card, which means a well-deserved break from digging and the chance to enjoy a treat from the farm shop shelves or a cuppa and a slice in the café. It’s a great way for local shops like us to source even more fresh, seasonal produce that’s grown right on our doorstep.

Why Saltmarsh Lamb will always be a Seasonal Product It’s uncommon these days to come across truly seasonal foods since the supermarkets can now source most fresh produce year-round, from across the globe. There are a few exceptions however, Saltmarsh Lamb being one of them. It’s around the start of June that our customers begin to enquire about when Saltmarsh Lamb will be available – which we, as butchers love – as it shows a genuine appreciation of a quality product that is eagerly anticipated as the season approaches.

The reason why our Morecambe Bay Saltmarsh Lamb remains a seasonal product is down to the nature of the shore land on which the lambs graze. Compared with “regular” fertilised meadow grazing, estuarine shores contain a lighter density of wild, nutrientrich plants and herbs that are subject to tidal conditions. This natural diet in turn results in slower growing animals that need longer to mature before becoming ready for consumption. The meat produced is a light, sweet and distinctive product that is 100% Cumbrian and seasonal. Combine the wet rub ingredients and coat the joint all over. Leave to marinate for 2-3 hours. When ready to cook, pre-heat the oven to 180 degrees. Pour a good glug of extra virgin olive oil all over the meat then place in a heavy-based oven tray and pan-fry on a mediumhigh heat until coloured and caramelised. Place in the oven to cook until blush pink in the centre. Enjoy!

Bookshelf The Children’s Summer Reading Challenge will be starting on Saturday 15th July and will run until September this year.
All councillors were in attendance for the full town council meeting on Monday 12th June. District Councillor, Mary Wilson, said that following a Health & Safety review there will be changes to some resident’s bin collections. Those affected will be informed in writing by South Lakeland District Council (SLDC). During the ‘Have your Say’ Section, Roger Handley, the Chairman of the newly formed Friends of the Victoria Hall Group laid out the group’s plans, once the Constitution had been adopted. The group will work closely with Grange Town Council and the Victoria Hall Manager. At a later point in the meeting, Cllr Tom Harvey reminded councillors that SLDC had undertaken a £10,000 Locality Study in respect of Victoria Hall, the results of which are expected in September. Cllr Harvey did say that the study may come back and say that a ‘Friends Group’ is the best way forward but councillors needed to be mindful of this forthcoming report. Cllr Harvey then proposed that the Council approve the Constitution. This was voted on and duly Resolved. Cllr Joanna Greenway informed councillors that positive developments have already come out of the proposed

There will be a ‘Sign-along- a story’ storytime on 7th August which is an introduction to sign language through animal stories for children aged 2 to 6 years. County Matters
The new administration at the County Council will be a Lib Dem / Labour alliance with support from a few independents. This, of course, ignores the fact that The Conservatives achieved the largest number of votes ahead of the Labour and Lib Dem votes together. The party has the largest number of seats but hey that is what happens when there is no clear majority for one party. We are determined to hold this new administration to account for their actions over the next four years. On a more positive note the parishes including Grange Town Council have met with the Saturday Bus provider of the 532 service and have agreed to subsidise this service for another 12 months. I must thank these parishes for their support and community involvement which will benefit the residents and tourists in the Cartmel Peninsula. I have been trying to catch up with all the questions and requests residents have mentioned to me over the last few weeks and hopefully I have picked all of these up. I am going to be brutally honest with you and say that I don’t have a great deal to report on in my Grange Now column this month. The past couple of months have been so taken up with Elections that I confess that I have not been as focused on our campaigns as I could have been. In fact, to be strictly accurate, since May 3rd when Parliament was dissolved I haven’t even been your MP. But the election is now well out of the way and I am so honoured and grateful to be re-elected as your MP. I promise to do all I can to justify your faith in me and to work as hard as I can for your needs, whether you voted for me or not. You may well have heard that I have also resigned as leader of the Liberal Democrats. There were a number of reasons for this that I am sure you don’t want me to go into in Grange Now. But the long and short of it is that I am really pleased that this will allow me to spend much more time here working with you and our local councillors to get this area the best in health, education,
housing, jobs and all the many other things we all know are needed. My very firm plan is to spend much more time sleeping in my own bed in Milnthorpe than I do in my tiny flat in London. That is what I have promised Rosie and the children so I can’t see that I will be allowed to go back on it. Not that I want to. The down side for you is that you are going to be seeing a lot more of me around the area. I allowed myself a few days with my family when the election was over but we were out knocking on doors within a week of the election asking people what were the local issues they were concerned about. Much to my relief everyone we met seemed really pleased to see us and pleased that we were out without any election on the horizon.

Grange Methodist On 28th March, the Women’s Network at Grange Methodist Church, held their A G M.
The members of committee and officers, were all returned for the coming year, and then the main business was the distribution of funds.
It was decided that a gift be given to the Church, and the remainder of the funds would be divided between the Calvert Trust, Eden House, District Network and Chernobyl Children. These children come annually to enjoy a holiday, have medical
checks and dental treatment. This year, a new group of children will be visiting and they will come for five years. Network ladies have had a part in the past in the entertainment, when children could come and enjoy the delights of Grange and have a meal at the church.
The date for the Network Annual coffee morning was announced. It is to be the 2nd of August. Prior to that there will be an appeal, for goods to sell on the stalls and help manning the stalls. On Wednesday, 29th March, the Women’s Network organised a slide show presented by Maurice Steele. Maurice is a retired farmer, with a wonderful eye for a picture and great talent for putting together an engaging show, with
music and commentary. This year his ‘Travels with a Camera’ featured many properties of the National Trust. We visited the nature reserve at Blakeney, Styal Mill and Apprentice House, and the Red Squirrel reserve at Formby. We saw the apparently tumbling down Tudor Speke Hall, Liverpool and the very tree from which Isaac Newton saw the apple fall, the home of William Morris of motor car fame and many more places with interesting histories. Afterwards, ladies served a delicious buffet supper which added to the success of the evening. Proceeds from the show are for the North West Air Ambulance; we shall know the amount later.
Churches Together in Grange & District One of the topics which the Churches in the area are concerned with is their work amongst young people. Accordingly, a ‘Youth Trust’ was set up, funded by the churches and individual donations. This was set up in 2006, run by Trustees, now under the leadership of Chris Mason, the Diocesan Network Youth Coordinator. After some time, when funds allowed, Chris’s work has been helped by other youth leaders. Currently, Libby Cuthbertson, an experienced youth worker and outdoor

On the last Sunday in May we were privileged to have a visit from Roger Jones of Christian Music Ministries, who, with a group of instrumentalists, led the worship at our morning Communion service which was much appreciated. activities Coordinator, making up the team, along with voluntary helpers. They maintain work at Cartmel Priory School with worship, and a Christian time lunch club, as well as visits to the primary schools.
A Friday evening group meet at the Methodist Church, and is growing, along with supporting their Sunday morning ‘Toast Church’. At St. Mary’s Church, ‘Rock Solid’ takes place in Allithwaite; there is also the possibility of another venture at Flookburgh, developing out of ‘Flook4Youth’. But more volunteers are needed
and a variety of outdoor games available for all age groups. In spite of atrocious weather the previous and following day the rain held off and the sun shone on the 60-70 adults and children who enjoyed the BBQ and drinks provided. The following Monday another after school Messy Church with a seaside theme was enjoyed by around 40+ children - both in and out of doors - with various water related activities and finishing with an outdoor picnic
for this to take off.
All of this work helps in forming good relationships between school staff, local churches, and encouraging and supporting young people in their faith as well as forging community links between the various age groups. The date of the next meeting for Churches Together in Grange & District is 11th July Tuesday at 2.00pm. tea consisting of fish finger burgers and ice cream. In July we are looking forward to a visit from Sam and Sarah Hargreaves who will be leading us in outdoor worship at Abbot Hall from 10.00 am on Saturday, July 1st finishing with a BBQ at 1 o’clock and the following day there will be various activities at church during the morning finishing with a Jacob’s Join picnic lunch. St Paul’s, Grange The Spring Fair on the 3rd June was very successful, raising over £1200. We saw the benefits of the new kitchen with a large number of bacon sandwiches being served to hungry visitors and helpers, in addition to cakes, scones coffee and tea. The Edwardian Songs of Praise was well attended with a congregation drawn from all the town churches. The service was prepared by our Curate Andrew, Nigel Duce played the organ to considerable applause and the expanded choir, organised and led by Charles Edmondson, our Director of Music, gave a wonderful performance. The congregation sung heartily, rounding off a very enjoyable evening. The next in our series of summer concerts, organised by Charles Edmondson, will take place on the 26th July. Charles will be joined by the violinist Barbara Tune to present a programme of piano and violin music. Barbara will perform pieces ranging from the baroque to the present day. The concert starts at 1.00pm with lunch available from 12.00. The Parochial Church Council is due to meet in July to finalise arrangements for the Christmas Tree Festival. Following that meeting dates for the Festival will be announced and organisations will be invited to book places.

In the afternoon of June 4th, the South Lakes Group of the URC held a joint Pentecost service followed by refreshments. It was a most inspiring service and it was

It was lovely as my final show with them was also Jack and the Beanstalk where I played Jack so I came full circle. When and what was your first leading role? More of a supporting role but I played Quakers in Aladdin and then the following year went on to play a princess. Other roles I played with Grange Panto include the Snow Queen in Snow Queen, Jack in Jack and the Beanstalk, Avarice in Snow White. I also was part of GAOS on and off from a young age (being the fiddler in Fiddler on the Roof when I was about 8). I also played Bet in Grange Amateur Operatic society’s production of Oliver, Susan in Calamity Jane and Louise in Carousel.
Artist of the month Grace Heap, Actor/Singer Grange born young performer, Grace Heap was no stranger to the stage when she took off on an eight month long tour of Spain and Portugal with the Clever Pants Theatre Group. Grace, now 21, started singing and acting at a very young age and Grange Now caught up with her following her recent concert, with Glen Giffney, ‘Resonance’. Tell us about the early years: I went to Grange Primary School, followed by Cartmel Priory School and then Ripley St Thomas Sixth Form in Lancaster. I have two half sisters but they are older and live abroad with their own families.
When did your love of performing start? I don’t remember ever not loving it. It’s always just something I have done. I took part in competitions from a young age and then started going to Stagecoach at weekends and began performing in shows, singing at concerts and I always loved going to the theatre with my mum. What was the first production you performed in? Grange Pantomime: Jack and the Beanstalk as ensemble. I joined as soon as I was old enough so this was my first show with them and I loved it.
When I was younger the stagecoach agency got me a few roles such as one of the children in Drowning on Dry Land when the tour came to Windermere. Which college did you attend and what was your audition piece? The Musical Theatre Academy (MTA) in London. I had to attend a full day audition with a full morning of dance and then acting and singing in the afternoon. I performed a monologue from Star Spangled Banner and the songs ‘With You’ from Ghost and ‘Far Away’ from Blitz. During my time at The MTA I
Taking Steps was a triumph On the night that we were all reeling from the fact that the snap election had produced a hung parliament (Friday 9th June), I went along to see if Grange Drama’s latest production could cheer me up. Under Director, Deborah Powell, the group tackled Alan Ayckbourn’s theatrein-the-round production, the farcical, ‘Taking Steps’. When it’s done properly, it’s a ‘laugh a minute’ show and I’m delighted to say Grange Drama did it properly! I, along with the rest of the

excellent production. However, I must single out newcomer, Howard St Quinton, in his debut role for the group. His performance of hapless, ineffectual solicitor, Tristam was superb. His performance throughout was flawless and every line he uttered brought a laugh. sell-out audience, were in stitches throughout. The cast were superb in their respective roles; with timing and delivery that was spot on. Wellcast and believable in their roles, it was an

played roles such as Phaeax in Welcome to Thebes, Faith in The Venus Factor and Fairy Godmother in Cinderella. Other shows I did while I was there were Around the World in Eighty Days, Sunshine on Leith, two shows cases and two musical theatre revues. When I graduated from MTA, I had done nine public productions (a one week run of a production at the end of every term) and was delighted to sign with Simon & How Associates (Agency) The recent tour you were on: Who, Where, What and how did you get the part? The tour was around Spain and Portugal for eight months with a Theatre in Education company called Clever Pants. We did four shows; two children shows ‘Tall Tales’ and ‘Danny Daydream’ and then parody/ comedy versions of the classics ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and ‘Pride and Prejudice’ for older children and adults. I was in a small team of just three of us: two boys and me so there was a lot of multi rolling involved and not much time off stage. We would sometimes do four shows a day, often in different venues. Long days and lots of driving but lots of fun too. I got the job through audition. What’s next? Having just returned from the concert in Grange, I am currently auditioning for a variety of roles.
The Textile Landscape Local textile artist, Penny HillierEvans is returning to Grange library, between 18 July to 12 August, with an exhibition entitled The Textile Landscape. Penny’s work is inspired by the Cumbrian landscape and the breathtaking views across Morecambe Bay. The exhibition will include many new pieces all of which are for sale. During the exhibition Penny will be demonstrating how she creates her pieces, look out for the details in the library regarding the artist in residence sessions. Back by popular demand! On Saturday 29th July, Elizabeth Harrison will be returning to Allithwaite Community Centre with her one-woman show. In March, Elizabeth held a similar music, dance and entertainment evening, at the community centre, and everyone said at the time “it was fantastic night”. SCHOOL REPORT
Flookburgh Primary We have had a very busy start to our summer term, and the one place where we haven’t spent much time is in school itself!
To take advantage of the good weather, we have all been out enjoying trips and sporting events. Class 1 have enjoyed a fun-filled day or activities in Cartmel woods. Class 2 have been to explore the grounds and history of Holker Hall. Class 3 have brought their topic work to life by visiting the Roman remains at Birdoswald up on Hadrian’s Wall, and Class 4 have ventured even further afield with their trip to become World War II refugees at Beamish Museum, County Durham! Our children have enjoyed several sporting events in the local area. Our team of four children from Year 4 recently excelled to win their Tennis Tournament at Ulverston Tennis Centre. This means they will move on to play at the next stage in Carlisle on 12th July! Other teams have done similarly well in the Grange Lions Football tournament and the local cluster Rounders tournament at Cartmel Priory School.
Grange Preschool We have been learning about our local surroundings this half-term including: writing and posting letters; planting and watering our beans and sunflowers; worm charming with Grange Outdoor Club; cooking in our Nature Kitchen, talking on our Forest Phone and drawing on our Seaside-themed Chalkboards, which are new resources from the Co-op Community Fund grant. We have also purchased sensory materials such as Skwooshi and Kinetic Sand (the adults love these as much as the children!) If you re-register your Co-op membership card, you can support us in raising money for updating our electrical items. You can also donate cakes or help sell them on our Refreshment Stall at the Historic Vehicle Rally, Sunday 13th August. Our next Nearly New Sale for maternity/baby/children’s clothes/toys/equipment will be in September. We have visits planned to the Fire Station and Grange Nursery as well as a Sports Day and Teddy Bears Picnic. Our next Open Mornings are on Monday 3rd July and Friday 14th July from 9.15 to 11.15 for families with children from toddling to 3 years.

The School Council organised and ran a ‘school talent show’ and what amazingly creative children we have. The job of choosing the winners from KS1 and KS2 was not an enviable one as the standard was so high. Our wonderful winners were James Hall in Tawny Owls for his marvellous magic show and Luke Hamer in Eagle Owls for his selfwritten ‘Allithwaite Blues’ piano song.
Cartmel Priory
This month, I wanted to highlight the fantastic work carried out by members of our school community. The PTFA runs and supports an annual calendar of events in school, eg school discos, the 100 Club prize draw, a Pre-Loved Uniform Shop and providing refreshments for musical events and parents’ evenings. Children at Lindale School have been enjoying the summer; getting out and about with our residential visits and outdoor learning. Our Reception and Year 1 class spent a really fascinating morning at Castle Head pond dipping. Year 2 and 3 have had an action packed day at Castle Head, including staying the night. The Tawny Owls have visited the Aquarium of the Lakes as part of their Coastal Topic. They explored coastal habitats and travelled on a steam train just as people would have to holiday here in the past. This week all of the Key Stage Two children visited

Years 4 and 5 spent 3 days at Sedbergh where they explored the Howgills, walked to Cautley Spout waterfall, scrambled up a ghyll and also enjoyed helping with the cooking including toasting marshmallows as part of a barbeque. Year 6 are now looking forward to their residential to the Northern Lake District for 4 days at the end of June. Some of our Year 6 children spent the election day at the South Lakes Pupil Parliament at the Netherwood hotel with other schools from the area. We learnt all about the election process and had our own
Heaves Farm in Levens as part of their educational ‘farm to fork’ initiative. The farm is a large working farm with livestock for meat and dairy. The children enjoyed a hugely informative day with a wide variety of demonstrations to watch. We enjoyed sheep being sheared, a sheepdog working, a working dairy tour, cattle barns and how to age eggs and handling chicks, and so much more. We finished this month with our Sports Day which all of the children really enjoyed, especially the parent and teacher races!
A summer production of Shrek –performances will be held on Monday 17 July, 1pm & 6.30pm. A special event will also be held in school to mark the excellent attendance rates of many pupils. One of our parents has successfully obtained funding from three local companies that provide transport to school–KT Coaches, Economical Taxis and Ricky’s Travel. The school is extremely grateful to the transport companies who have sponsored this new awards process. Thank you to everyone who contributes and supports the school in this way. It all adds up to a win for Lindale Four pupils from Lindale Primary came top of the class when they took part in the annual ‘Times Tables Challenge Quiz’ held at Grange Fell Golf Club on Wednesday 24th May. Taking part were Y3-Y6 pupils from Allithwaite, Cartmel, Grange, Flookburgh, Leven Valley and Lindale Primary Schools were challenged about their knowledge of their times
tables and their application in problem solving. The Final was sponsored by Hadwins Motor Group, Higginsons Butchers, Cartmel Sticky Pudding Company and Furness Building Society. The winning school was Lindale with Leven Valley in second place and Allithwaite placed third. In September 2017, changes in provision for two, three and four yearolds mean that parents of pre-school age children, who meet certain criteria, will be able to claim 30 hours a week of free childcare. SOCIETY ROUND-UP Grange Garden Society Kevin Pearson made a welcome return to the Garden Society on 19th May, his presentation on the subject of Growing for Cut Flowers was very comprehensive. His enthusiasm and experience of flowers suitable for arrangement,both annual and perennial, was accompanied by useful information and growing know-how to ensure members could obtain the best possible results. As well as his favourites, Kevin tries a variety of new seeds each year and it was interesting to see the good the bad and the ugly available on the market, each variety photographed beautifully. A group of members will visit Dutton Hall on 9th July as a follow up to a talk on Classic Roses given by Catherine Penny earlier in the season. On July 11th Wild Orchids will be the topic of a presentation by Alan Gendle. Meetings in the URC Hall are at 7 30 pm and visitors are welcome. Witherslack Tea and Chat Group We meet once a Month in the Barwick Hall (next to the Church ) for a welcome cup of tea Biscuits, Cake OR freshly baked cream scones, so if you are alone or out walking with Friends make your way to the Barwick Hall between 2p.m. and 3.30p.m. and get refreshed, have a friendly chat about Village life or World affairs with our friendly group. Grange over Sands Golf Club It is hard to believe that we are now halfway through the year already. Competitions are in full swing with some amazing scores being posted both for men and ladies. Dave and Carrie Cooper are relatively new to the game but play most days and have won both the Easter Mixed and the Pecan Trophy with Sean and Sarah Munsie not far behind winning the Jubilee Trophy, handicaps are dropping for these relatively new players as they play in the men and ladies competitions as well as the mixed. Many congratulations to Jordan Harrison who now has an exact handicap of 1.1, well done Jordan for all your hard work and dedication to the game. Practice certainly plays off as he and his brother Craig are on the course most days playing either in a competition or just practicing. Allithwaite & Cartmel WI Members were treated to a feast of delights at the June meeting when Julie Clarke gave her talk and demonstration on ‘Entertaining made easy’. Former Chair of North Yorkshire Federation of WIs she is now Chair of the Great Yorkshire Show, continues to run a hill farm in Coverdale and has a B&B in her home. In less than an hour, she produced a chicken casserole, spinach and ham roulade and two different desserts, at the same time maintaining an entertaining and instructive talk. It was her recipe that was chosen for the cake at the WI centenary event at the Royal Albert Hall and also for the Queen’s 90th birthday. A straight-talking, very funny, very busy lady, the meeting was enjoyed by all. The speaker at the next meeting on July 4th is Liz Howard Thornton talking about the Voluntary Field Ambulance and Casualty Nursing Services in WW1. Work on the sensory garden continues and the Girl Guides kindly donated and planted an apple tree. Singing for Memory continues weekly on Thursday mornings at Allithwaite Community Centre. Grange over Sands NSPCC Grange over Sands NSPCC would like to thank everyone who came to their Summer Coffee Morning on Saturday, May 27th, in the United Reformed Church Hall and helped to raise £312.82p. This will all go to help the ongoing work of the NSPCC in our area and, to this end, we will be holding an afternoon tea party, entitled ‘The Flower Show’ once again in the United Reformed Church Hall on Saturday, August 19th. The Committee was re-elected en-bloc. The ongoing reconstruction of Colonel Austin Porritt’s rock garden, above Yewbarrow Lodge, is well in hand. The planned exhibition of photographs, to celebrate the Cartmel Peninsula, with views of today compared to many years ago was discussed; it will be held in the Victoria Hall from 7th - 11th August from 10am to 4pm and thereafter in the library for two weeks. A donation fee will be asked for to cover the cost of the hire of the Victoria Hall. Posters will be displayed during July to advertise the event. The Minutes of the meeting of the 8th June together with copies of the Chairman’s Annual Report and the audited Accounts will be placed in the library in the 3Ps file. Lower Holker WI Lower Holker W.I. At our June meeting Marjorie Bidgeway gave us a most interesting talk about the “History of Buttons”, with the help of her wonderful collection of buttons. The button themed raffle prizes were much appreciated ! Our next meeting, at Flookburgh Village Hall is on 6th September, 1:30 for members, followed by an open meeting at 2:00 when Pam Dalton will be talking about “Rag Rugging” when visitors are most welcome to join us. £3 including refreshments. Grange and District U3A At our Annual General Meeting at the Victoria Hall in June, we welcomed local historian Jean Scott-Smith who in words and pictures showed us round Mardale as it was before it was flooded. In July the General Meeting is replaced by a summer event at the Cumbria Grand on Tuesday 18th July from 1.30 pm. It is planned to have croquet, walking football, a treasure hunt and a session looking back over the 17 years that U3A has existed in Grange. To keep up our energy levels there will be an afternoon tea! Booking in advance is required by contacting Roger Handley on 34161. We did not choose the best year to return to the Edwardian Festival but a small band of volunteers battled with our gazebo and the weather in order to let people know about the opportunities for retired and semi-retired people that are available through U3A. The Environment Awareness Group had a very informative visit to the Halton Lune Community Hydro Electric scheme.

Witherslack WI Twenty one members attended the June meeting. Twelve had very much enjoyed a visit to the Hawkshead Relish Factory. Anne Walshaw gave a very full account of her trip to the AGM in Liverpool as our delegate. The security was very strict but impressive, and the whole event was excellent. There will be a walk round Kendal on July 25th with Trevor Hughes. The speaker,Tracy Wells, a milliner, was unable to come at short notice, so each member “modelled” the hat she had brought and told its story. A general knowledge quiz filled up the spare time. A leisurely lunch break taken on top the Fell enjoying views to Skiddaw, Blencathra, Bassenthwaite before descending to St John’s church, a minutes silence in respect to the Manchester atrocity. Returning via east Fell, a teashop refreshments to completing the walk. 10 Ramblers spent 4days walking break at Rambler’s chalet -Golden Walker in Newland valley, different walks each day to suit everyone, blessed with 4 glory days, some managed sunbath at the top of hill, some conquered 10 Wainwright hills, each day ended with social able evening in local pub. 18th May 8 walkers set off from Swan Hotel Grasmere , followed the Far Easedale valley to admiring the surrounding fells and waterfalls, a break overlooking a waterfall before ascending to Calf Crag. Lunch on a sunny sheltered spot with distant vistas. A super ridge walk over Gibson Knott to Helm Crag before descending to start point. 1st June 18 ramblers and a dog started from the square of Broughton-in-Furness to walked the 9 miles Thornthwaite Latter Rigg and High Rosthwaite with views of Coniston Old Man and Caw, walk completing with refreshments taken at pub in the square. Grange Rotary The Club enjoyed a fascinating presentation on 24 May by our very own Ted Taylor’s daughter Kathy Haughton on “Life in Uganda” with all its trials and tribulations. In the Rotary Young Photographer of the Year competition(Junior Section) we had a District winner from Cartmel Primary School On 13 June the renowned annual Kids Out event took place where two of our members escorted children,with varying disabilities and accompanied by their teachers,to Lakeside for a sail to Bowness. Our members were duly waiting for them at their Bowness destination to drive them safely back to their Kendal School.A great day out was had by all,which could be seen on the smiling faces of the happy children - a most worthwhile event. The District 1190 RotaKids Conference took place on 16 June at Lancaster University Conference Centre.Ken Thompson was our named driver and took three children with their teacher to the event which included workshops on beekeeping,drumming,recycling and peace.Again, this proved to be a real learning experience for our Grange Primary School RotaKids.
Our next event is the Summer BBQ which will take place at the beautiful home of Chris and Mike Fallowfield on 8 July. Coffee Club At our May meeting, we heard from Jannine Ebenso who had just returned from Kathmandu to talk about the work of the Leprosy Mission. A Lancashire lass who trained as a physiotherapist before joining the Leprosy Mission in 1991. She was sent to Calabar (famed for Mary Slessor’s pioneering work in Nigeria in the nineteenth century), and there she met and subsequently married Dr Bassey Ebenso. When he came to Leeds to study for his PhD and then to do research, Jannine became Head of Quality Assurance for the Leprosy Mission worldwide. Jannine explained that although the disease of leprosy could be cured by modern medicines, the resulting physical, emotional and cultural damage often leads to the ‘cured’ patient being considered an outcast. Surgery, education and a full range of social and economic support can progress towards complete healing of the ‘outcast’ and restoration to his society … a truly worthwhile target. On July 18, Juliet Burd will be flying back from Uganda to give us an update on the work that she and her team with Children of Hope Uganda have been doing since her last visit. Grange WI In May, members discussed, debated and voted in favour of two Resolutions for the AGM - one about alleviating loneliness and the other to reduce microplastic fibres entering the ocean. Margaret Brennand attended the AGM at Liverpool and found it a very interesting experience. Both Resolutions were carried at the AGM. Our craft team entered several exhibits at Country Fest and two members won prizes. Despite the rain our new look gazebo at the Edwardian Festival proved to be an attraction for the public, not least because it provided shelter from the rain which went on for the whole day. We were thrilled to win the prize for the best stall on the day and our cakes, traybakes and jams and chutneys were snapped up by the public. We are all hoping that the 2018 Edwardian will be a dry event, perhaps even warm and sunny! For our July meeting we will have a Treasure Hunt around Grange, followed by Fish and Chips in the Church Hall. New members are very welcome at our meetings. Grange Fell Golf Club Grange Fell Captain’s Away Day this year was held at Kirkby Lonsdale GC when the winner was Mike Hudson with 38 pts. On Sunday 28th May we played for the Fisher Bowl winner was Russell Kay with a 65 net, the following weekend we held Vice Captains Day winner was Mick O’Doherty with 41pts beating Nathan Higginson on a card play off, we then held the Mid week Medal 2 on a blustery Wednesday winner was Gary Holden with an excellent 66 net. On Sunday 11th June we played the Ronnie Robinson Trophy a Pairs Bogey Competition winners were Ken Illingworth and Brian Wilkinson with 8up, the following Sunday was the Millennium Trophy winner was Russell Kay with an excellent 62net. Inclement weather has put paid to Ladies Competition’s on Tuesday’s,but a Stableford Competition was won by Dayna Davidson,and Medal 6 was won by Ruth Waring and they enjoyed a great day out at Lancaster Ladies Open. Playdale (Haverthwaite) held their inaugural Charity golf day at the Fell on Friday 9th June which proved a success, Dave Wilson team were the winners with 100 pts . We hope this can become an annual event as is the Grange Lions Charity Open and again Grange Fell are proud to host this on Friday 11th August. Our speaker will be member Catherine Hunt and her talk will be about ‘Aromatherapy’. Grange Lions Along with several other local organisations we attended a rather damp Edwardian Festival last month. Despite the
weather we met several kind people who took part in our competitions. The weather was much better for our annual 5 a side football tournament in which seven teams from five local schools took part and we are grateful to Matthew and Gemma from Cartmel school who helped to make the event a success. The winners of the trophy were Cartmel school who beat Flookburgh in the final. We have donated a prize of £100 to the winning school to be used for the purchase of sports equipment.

An amusing and varied demonstration was enjoyed by Cartmel and District Flower Club at Cartmel Village Hall on Monday 19th June 2017 on the subject “Come into the Garden Maud”. Kate Russell and Patti Dawson created some magnificent displays using the themes of The Garden of Eden, Kitchen Garden, Hanging Arrangement on Wood, Physic and Cottage Garden. The floral creations were accompanied by some erudite literary readings and Patti brought the afternoon to a close with a splendid rendition of the song which was the theme of the afternoon – “Come into the Garden Maud”. Sue Needham gave the vote of thanks. The next meeting is the Celebration Tea to be held at The Netherwood at 2pm on Monday 17 July 2017. One year on, and Love of Paws owner, Katie Sykes is looking back with pride at her first year in business. She told Grange Now, “Setting up Love of Paws was a complete change of career for me and I couldn’t be happier. I’m really lucky in that I have some wonderful clients who trust me with their amazing four legged friends. We have great walks together and, although I’m busy, I still have a bit of room in my schedule for more”. Katie looks after all makes and models and the majority of her clients like to have their dog walked in the company of other dogs. Katie explains, “walking in a group is not just fun for your dog, as they are naturally sociable animals, but it also helps to socialise the timid ones or those who get a bit stressed around other dogs.” To celebrate her first year, Katie is doing a prize draw, with a £25 voucher for Lamberts Pet Supplies as the prize. LETTERS Dear Editor, Why is it that United Utilities (UU) are allowed to impose traffic lights controlled working on Holme Lane, Allithwaite when all they are using it for is to dump spoil from their trench digging on Jack Hill, Kents bank until it is collected to be taken elsewhere? The temporary traffic lights are in use all night, all weekends including Bank Holidays. If UU were to take the spoil to their own depot` or wherever it is being dumped there would be no need to inconvenience everyone in

While I am on the subject of Kirkhead Road it is dangerous to walk down the far end towards Priory Lane and Kents Bank station because of overhanging trees and no foot way on both sides, these trees have never been cut back to any extent in 20 years. Progress is being made by the Victoria Hall Support Group. We have had our constitution approved by Grange Town Council and have formally adopted it. This means we can now apply for charitable status, which opens up the opportunity for further funding for the Victoria Hall. We will also be running some

Starting back in September 2016 we organised and began all of our usual language courses which are ever popular, including French, Spanish, German and Italian classes for beginners, intermediates and advanced learners, we hope to be able to offer a similar range of courses again during 2017/18. Healthy Hearts with Elaine Towler has become one of our most popular courses in the Grange and Ulverston areas to the point where we introduced 2 new classes to Grange in the Spring of 2016. As regular attendees of the Healthy Hearts classes will know, these classes are now free to attend; this will continue to be the case.
We have tried several times to run iPad courses this year; these have fallen by the wayside for various reasons, up until this month. I’m

Dear Editor, Use it or lose it. We had a sudden requirement for a ‘small blue bear’ last week, and after surfing the net, my wife suggested we try the local Post Office, which has all sorts of stuff on sale. They had plenty of bears on
pleased that we have been able to get 3 beginners iPad courses up and running in Grange, Cartmel and Ulverston. For September we are planning further beginners and intermediate/ continuation courses to allow learners to carry on developing their knowledge and skills for iPad use. On the flip side of the coin, we’ve had lower enrolments on many of the arts and crafts courses we have offered, with many of them being cancelled due to lack of numbers. If there are any courses you would like us to provide please let us know and we will do our best to do so. As always I am keen to hear the ideas and requirements of the community we serve. I’d be happy to hear your thoughts on how we could progress and serve the community better through

I remember much of it was spent with Hilary Stubbs commuting by train to Preston when conversations were often about a particular play, its set design & costumes, ideas for future productions & so on. Above all I personally know her help with learning lines for various plays, none so challenging as Abigail’s Party or Time of My Life, was invaluable. Hanging up one’s acting boots is never easy for anyone but, after seeing Taking Steps last month, I can certainly say that it is just as enjoyable watching others perform - & no lines to learn!
