‘Not the Editor’ Letter

An amazing show of talent

Chris is off on his jollies and we all hope he has a great time. There’s a lot happening this month: Don’t miss Cartmel Show on 2nd August. This year there’s a free shuttle bus from Cark Station. Northern Rail student discounts Grange Now understands that Northern has extended the great discounts for students’ season tickets also for the 2017/18 academic year. Earlier this year Northern had a trial which included a 40% discount for younger students and a 25% discount on term time season tickets for 16 to 18 year olds. More information will be available through Northern and the local schools, listed below, closer to the start of term. Schools included in the scheme; Dowdales - Dalton, Ulverston VHS - Ulverston, Ripley St Thomas - Lancaster, Lancaster Royal Grammar, Lancaster Girls Grammar and Central Lancaster High. This is your chance to have your say on parking issues - see page 6. Ella Wheatcroft, Y11 from Cartmel Priory School is with us as part of her work experience. This issue includes an article and photographs by Ella which covers Prom Art’s ‘extra’ event on 16th July. Stephen Wilson is urging you to join him on he Allithwaite half marathon to raise money for St Mary’s Hospice. That’s it. School’s out. Have a lovely Summer! Sharon, Sarah, Glenn and Ella.

MAIN: Juniors perform ‘Be our guest’

RIGHT TOP: Micky Mouse Clubhouse

RIGHT BOTTOM: Ballet trio to Mia and Sebastian’s theme from ‘La La Land’

The biennial show from Elite Dance saw the impressive dancers, aged from just four years old, dancing to hits from ‘Stage and Screen’ the theme for this year’s show. They included, ‘Feed the Birds’ and ‘Supercalifragilistic’ from Mary Poppins, The Nutcracker Ballet, If they could see me now and Singing in the Rain to name just a few. The seniors took to the stage en-masse for some skilfully energetic routines to current tunes, Cake by the Ocean and Can’t stop the feeling and the audience were carried along with their enthusiasm. Saturday night saw the dancers perform to a packed house which raised their performances to another level. Such a large audience would have an effect on the most seasoned performer but seven year old Junior, Emilia, took it all in her stride when she took to the stage with Senior, Meg Turnbull, and Intermediate, Katie Shepherd, to perform a beautifully executed ballet routine to Ryan Gosling’s piano solo from the much acclaimed, La La Land. Following Saturday’s show, teachers Jane Baddiley, Kym Walton and Jennifer Jeffreys presented the previous year’s exam certificates and they announced that Senior, Rosa Copley had won a scholarship with the British Ballet Organisation. The school’s Principal, Jane, told Grange Now, “Rosa auditioned in Manchester for a BBO Dance Scholarship – less than 30 places are available in the North and the same in the South each year and students can audition

for ballet or Jazz – Rosa went to both and was offered a Jazz Scholarship where she will receive additional training in Manchester once a month.” Mitch Rowlandson, whose Granddaughter was in the show, told Grange Now, “Congratulations to all involved in the show. From the opening dance set to the Grand Finale we were totally enthralled by the fabulous dancers. “From tap, ballet, modern and freestyle, a lot of hard work had clearly been put into this production, choreography, costumes and great choice of music and all so well rehearsed. The group is sadly lacking a budding Billy Elliot!” Elite Dance always give donations from the profits raised at the show to local causes, with primary schools in the area and Joe and Connie Butterfly Hugs Foundation, benefitting in the past. The beneficiary this year, once accounts have been finalised, will be Victoria Hall the very place where Elite Dance always stage their shows.

Investment Matters By Jason Crane APFS CFPTM

‘Don’t put all your eggs in one basket’ is a common saying, but in no other area does this resonate more than in Financial Planning. The key to successful Financial Planning is to ensure that you hold a diverse spread of asset types. Other than Cash and Property; two of the main asset types are Equities and Fixed Interest Securities, such as Corporate Bonds.

Barrow foodbank receives Queen’s Award

Equities/Shares; investing in shares means that you own a share of that company and therefore receive a share of the profits by way of dividend. Dividend income is often seen as a hedge against inflation; in theory, if revenue and costs rise with inflation, so will the profits. Consistent and rising dividends should mean a rise in the share price, ensuring investors benefit from both income and capital growth. Conversely, dividends are by no means guaranteed and the value of shares can fall as well as rise so investors may get back less than they invest. Corporate Bonds are essentially loans to companies in return for a fixed rate of interest; the loan being repayable on a fixed date in the future. Before being repaid by the company, Corporate Bonds can be bought and sold on the stock market with the price very much determined by supply and demand, affected by interest rates, inflation and the financial strength of the company. In terms of risk, this type of investment sits below shares as the company simply needs to have enough cash to service the debt, whereas shareholders require the company to make reasonable profits to pay a dividend. Although this type of investment is considered lower risk than shares, they do have an element of risk as some companies will default; in addition to this, currently we are seeing high prices being paid for this type of asset so whilst it will provide a regular income it may produce a capital loss when the maturity date arrives, thus increasing the potential risk of what has traditionally been seen as a ‘steady away’ type investment. Working with a Financial Planner will help you select the most appropriate assets and ensure your finances remain focused on your long term goals. The comments in this Editorial are only general and should not be taken as specific advice. It is important that you seek independent advice before taking any action on the above, or any other, subjects. It should be noted that the value of some investments can fall as well as rise therefore you may get back less than originally invested. Past performance is not necessarily a guide to the future. across South West Cumbria who have donated a staggering 275.4 tonnes of food!

The service commented saying, “We don’t think anyone in our community should have to face going hungry. That’s why we provide three days’ nutritionally balanced emergency food and support to local people who are referred to us in crisis. We are part of a nationwide network of foodbanks, supported by The Trussell Trust, working to combat poverty and hunger across the UK.”

“The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service is the highest award given to volunteer groups across the UK to recognise outstanding work done in their own communities. Each group is assessed on the benefit it brings to the local community and its standing within that community. This is a most prestigious award and is the equivalent of an MBE for individuals. Ann Mills recently attended an event at Buckingham Palace in recognition of the award.”

“None of this would have been possible if it were not for the communities of Barrow, Millom, Ulverston, Dalton, Grange over Sands, Cartmel and other areas

The next foodbank appeal takes place on Sunday 6th August, Father Magner Room, St Charles Church, Grange between 1-3 pm.

Stephen Wilson urges people to sign up for charity race Local decorator, and father of two, Stephen Wilson, took up running eight years ago when he turned forty, “Not a midlife crisis” he laughingly insists though wife, Lisa, may beg to differ! A long-term runner with Allithwaite Running Club, Stephen has decided to turn his hobby into money, and will undertake three half marathons, over the course of one weekend, in aid of St Mary’s Hospice. Stephen told Grange Now, “I have chosen St Mary’s Hospice, not only because it’s a local charity which does a lot of great work, but also because the hospice is very personal to me and my family. The half marathons are all held over the weekend of 8th - 10th September and Stephen said, “I will be running Langdale, arguably the hardest half marathon in England on the Friday, the most scenic half marathon on the Saturday which is the Allithwaite route and finishing with the World’s

Outstanding in our field.

biggest half marathon event the Great North Run. It is, however, the Allithwaite run which Stephen is most keen to push. He would love as many people as possible to sign up for the event as the full £10 entry fee will go to the Hospice. The race, which starts at 11am, sets off from Cartmel Priory School and there are prizes for race winners and age categories but all levels of competitors are very welcome. Full details of the race can be found on Allithwaite Running Club’s website. A big ‘thank you’ goes to Grange Lions for marshalling the event.

At 16:50 on 12th July, there was a serious incident at Bailey Lane level crossing. A man and a woman were within 5 metres of a collision with the 16:10 Barrow to Lancaster train. The incident left the driver so distressed he was unable to complete the journey. This is the latest in a series of incidents at the crossing and has led Network Rail to apply for a 21 day emergency closure. Network Rail has also commenced a Critical Incident investigation which will include a full review of the crossing.

Family pride as Amber Wilson complete her law degree Flookburgh lass, Amber Wilson, has made everyone incredibly proud as she is the first person in the family to go to university. A former pupil of Flookburgh Primary, Amber then went on to Cartmel Priory before doing A Level Law, English Language and Psychology at Ulverston Victoria High School. She told Grange Now, “I have just completed my MLaw Degree at Northumbria University in Newcastle, this is a four year integrated master’s degree. I have a particular interest in family law and children’s rights and hope to pursue a career in this area in the future. “In my final year I completed a 15,000 word dissertation on the issue of removing children from the jurisdiction. The most enjoyable part of my course has been working in the University Student Law Office (a law clinic offering free advice for members of the public).”

The big days

The bad days The rainy days And of course, every day Despite her success Amber admits that it was tricky to start with, “I was very homesick during my first year but University has been the best experience, and I’ve made friends for life. Despite living in a city (and loving it) for the past four years I would ideally like to live and work in the local area as I love where we live.” Her graduation was attended by her parents, grandparents, sister and niece and she finished by saying, “I feel proud of my achievements but most of all I have loved making my family proud of me.”

Green green grass of home

‘It’s not unusual’ for the Grange Now staff to have a night out together but ‘My My My’ what a fine time was had by all at Tom Jones on Cartmel racecourse. Star quality singer Tom remains undiminished as a truly fabulous voice who held 18,000 spectators captivated with a fine performance. Tom accompanied two young Welsh singers on stage, no doubt a fine experience for them to appear alongside one of the greats. The sun shone, the day’s racing had been enjoyed by many and all in all it was a real treat for everyone who attended.

Perhaps the unsung star of the show was the lady close to the stage waving a large flag decorated with knickers. Simply Red, Jools Holland and now Tom Jones... whatever next?

Don’t Call me a Grease Monkey

The stereotypical view of a garage is one of greasy overalls and a grease monkey , but the industry is changing. A few years ago, I decided to swap my mechanic’s tools for a business toolbox and adopt a different approach to running my independent garage. It was quite an ambitious project for someone who wasn’t from a typical business background, but it was a worthwhile and successful exercise. As a familyrun garage business, it is up to us to market our business, win more trade and create a name for ourselves as an important part of the local business community.

We believe here at Freelance Mechanics Ltd we are the closest thing to a main dealer without the main dealer prices. We complete a full set of training courses every year to make sure we are on track with modern day cars. We use the latest diagnostic equipment and have access to technical support from the UK and Germany. If we don’t know the answer we will have it within 24hrs. We are the only independent garage in the area to have direct links to the huge German manufacturing company ZF so you can gain on-site support that even main dealers don’t have. We were the first double clutch specialist in the area and the only one to undertake Ford, VAG and Renault Groups.

We also handle commercial contracts and write maintenance contracts for all types of businesses allowing credit terms up 120 days subject to credit checks. On the back of that we also allow spilt payment terms, so for example, if your bill was £200 you would pay 25% when you pick your car up and then 25% for the next 3 months We can deal with all warranty companies for you thus taking the hassle away from you.

We also carry out

Ecu remapping, Terraclean Tyres, Cambelts Servicing, MOT’s Air conditioning MOT cpd training courses

MOT Test Special Offer

£29.95

Here at Freelance Mechanics Ltd customers come far and wide. We have customers on the books from the Isle of Man, Essex, Manchester and Leeds, Nottingham so no matter where you are from we are proud you have chosen us.

Harry gets a 2:1 in History in Politics

CLASS OF 2017 PROM NIGHT

Last year, Harry Fenton joined Grange Now for a week’s work experience and we carried an article, written by Harry, about how having Autism has affected his life. Harry wrote of his early years: “Autism is a lifelong developmental disability affecting how people communicate and I’ve gone from a 3 year old boy who couldn’t even speak to graduating from Uni with a 2:1 in History and Politics. When I was diagnosed my family did a lot of fundraising to give me access to a specialist teaching programme known as the LOVASS model of applied behavioural analysis. This involved a high level of intervention and involved breaking down into manageable pieces and then building upon those skills. I responded to the programme very quickly and any doubts people had about its effectiveness were gone. When I started school a year later, I was always with one of my home tutors who carried out the programme and helped me at school. At first, I was home taught half the time and the programme was so successful when I was in Year 4, I could manage school full time and came out of primary school with very good grades. However, I had no social skills so I only made a couple of friends largely because of my autism setting me apart from everyone else. It was a very small school so there wasn’t that many people to choose from to spend time with and there wasn’t anyone remotely like myself .” Fast forward to 2017, and Harry has been in touch to say he’s gone to work for Lloyd BMW Blackpool’s service department on a full time basis in a customer retention role. Harry worked for the company during school breaks and he told us, “I decided to go back there because I was familiar with the dealership, I’ve formed really positive relationships with my colleagues and managers who have been extremely supportive and friendly and there is a lot of variety in the work I’ve done there. Most importantly, it’s a place where I genuinely feel valued both as an employee and as a human being which is something that keeps me going!” You can read Harry’s blogs at: harrysecolivingpage.blogspot.co.uk

Excited children welcomed Neil Jurd to Grange CE School to say a huge thank you for the generous donation towards adventurous and expressive arts activities. This year, the charity that was set up by Neil in memory of his wife Michelle, has been able to give £2,000 to the school. Over the past 6 years young people from Grange have had the chance to canoe, climb, experience high ropes, open water swimming, orienteering and many other activities as well as taking part in theatre performances, trying wood carving and felt making all thanks to the hard work of the trustees, committee and other volunteers who arrange and attend the fundraising events. The trust also donates the money raised to military charities in the UK and other local schools.

County Matters

As the main summer season approaches hopefully we will have a sunny August. I hope to see you all on the Grange Playing Fields on Sunday 13th August when I will be helping out yet again with the Dales and Lakes Historic Vehicle Show. This

Children pictured are part of the School Council, Pupil Parliament and Eco Groups. Y6 pupils particularly enjoyed sharing their most memorable moment with Neil when they spoke to him at the end of the special assembly. During

the assembly the Y2 and Y3 children performed a medley of songs including ‘True Colours’ and ‘Can’t stop the feeling’, both very appropriate as the children all feel that the charity has given them a chance to shine!

I have been approached again by residents complaining about the parking of vehicles in the Kents Bank area when the cross bay walks take place. I have asked County Officers to look at the problem but I must ask everyone that does park there please observe good

We are now in the period of full summer so please be aware of not leaving your dog or any animal unattended in your car as this can cause major distress to your pet or even worse in very hot weather. Enjoy your holidays Kindest regards Bill Wearing Conservative County Councillor Grange Division

Soroptimists help to flush away poverty More than a third of the people on the planet, that’s 2.4 billion people, don’t have somewhere safe, clean and hygienic to go to the loo. Soroptimist Alison Hinds spearheaded a campaign to ‘twin’ the toilets on our promenade with a secondary school in Pakistan. She sought permission from Grange Town council and devised a quiz sheet to

raise the funds for the Toilet Twinning Scheme. As a result, a toilet block was built in the school, and in Grange a framed certificate has been placed in each toilet with a plaque outside - evidence of how Soroptimists have helped to improve the lives and health of schoolchildren by providing adequate sanitation facilities, particularly important for the

girls who often miss school during menstruation when there are no private toilets to use.

Tim’s Column It has been a busy month and I am really pleased that my plans to spend more time at home in Cumbria seem to be working out. Although I will be honest with you and say I am rather looking forward to the beginning of the Parliamentary recess and getting off on holiday for a few days with Rosie and the children. I have been spending a lot of time discussing issues with the tourism industry. Clearly the award of World Heritage Status by Unesco to the Lake District National Park is a major opportunity to bring more visitors to our area, particularly from around the world. But I know people worry that with this award will come all sorts of constraints on what they will be able to do if they live inside the park boundary. We are far from the first to gain this status in this country, there are over 30 sites in the UK now and I’m not really aware of any who regret applying. To be frank I feel that us not having the status would have been a bit of an insult and resulted in people wondering why? But clearly we need to keep a close watch on what it brings and ensure that it is a positive thing. Finally, we are running our 13th Annual Summer Tour around the constituency in August. We get to Grange at 12.00pm on the 29th August and then spend the afternoon touring round Allithwaite, Flookburgh, Cark and Cartmel. No one gets turned away and I want to know what as many people think as possible. In the meantime if you need to get in touch the email address is tim@timfarron. co.uk and the phone number is 01539 723 403. Thanks for your support Tim

ART & MUSIC

A Monet or Matisse in the Making A group of local artists from Cartmel Art Society enjoy a session ‘En Plein Air’ to prepare for their forthcoming exhibition next month. Setting up their easels, members look to fine tune their work by setting up a studio at Yewbarrow House and Gardens. Set in four acres, these beautiful gardens offer a superb opportunity to paint or sketch exotic flowers, sculptures, an orangery, all against the glorious backdrop of Morecambe Bay. An early morning start left them wondering if we needed our sun hats, umbrellas or fleeces. Together with easels, paints, pastels, and other art materials they arrived laden and eager for our outdoor adventure. Whatever the weather working outdoors gives their artists more challenges than usual. A spokesperson told Grange Now, “As a group our aim is

to promote an interest in the arts, whether traditional or modern, and to encourage members of all ages to develop their skill and creativity. Cartmel Art Society meet approximately twice a month at Cartmel Village Hall. A calendar of workshops, running throughout the year, have inspired members to try out new techniques. This year we have enjoyed demonstrations by guest artists such as Jeanette Phillips and Peter Slater. Our artist-led workshops offer a chance to work in small groups in a relaxed and mutually supportive environment. Our ongoing programme of workshops for 2017/2018 offers us new guest artists plus returning favourites such as Francis Winder and our own Valerie Wood.” Ready to see the fruits of their labours? A chance to see their work and perhaps purchase an affordable future

Monet or Matisse. The ever popular Cartmel Art Society 51st art exhibition starts on Wednesday 9th August until Sunday 13th August at Cartmel Village Hall. Everyone welcome from 10am until 5pm. Entrance £1 to include tea and biscuits. We have access for wheelchairs.

The search is on for Grange Drama As has been reported previously, Grange Drama are in their 70th year and to celebrate they are they looking for new information and photographs to archive.

The next concert in the 2017 season of the Grange-over-Sands and District Concert club will be Michael Petrov on cello and Alexander Ullman on piano. They will delight the audience with Prokofiev’s Cello Sonata in C, Op 119, Schumann’s Drei Fantasiestucke, and Chopin’s Cello Sonata in G minor, Op. 65. Over the last 2 years Michael Petrov has appeared as a soloist with most British orchestras and at 18 major concert halls throughout Europe. He was nominated by the Barbican as ECHO Rising Star. Recently he made his debut at New York’s Carnegie Hall.

Alexander Ullman is now the Benjamin Britten Piano Fellow at the Royal College of Music. In 2011 he won the Liszt Competition in Budapest. He has also given recitals throughout Europe, the USA and Canada. Admission to hear these very talented international musicians is £12 at the door, free for young people.

A quick glance under ‘shows’ on their website shows where there are one or two missing links. Grange Drama told Grange Now, “Whilst early cast pictures do turn up, it is the persons responsible for bringing a play to the stage who remain the most elusive, namely, the director. The search is on for photographs of George Atkinson, Joyce Caley, Jackie Hadwin, Isobel Keighley, Nora Starzinska and George Webster, all of whom played a major role in the earlier years. If these can be found in time for our September Anniversary Exhibition, to be staged in Grange Library, that would be a real bonus.”

Grange now | AUGUST 2017 - Next deadline 18th AUGUST

Play readings continue with ‘The Last Confession’, a gripping thriller about a little known Cardinal from Venice, at 7.30pm on Wednesday 16 August in Grange Institute. This debut play, written by New York lawyer Roger Crane, originally starred David Suchet as Cardinal Benelli of Florence and requires a large number of male readers to give credence to this script and help uncover the bitter rivalries and political manoeuvrings within the plot. If anyone has seen the original West End production why not go along and tell them about it. Welcoming enthusiasts from other drama groups to join in monthly play readings is all part of AmDram so whichever group you belong to go why not join them just for the fun. They tell me the kettle is always on.

ART & MUSIC

Last night of the Proms with Flookburgh Band On Saturday 12th August, Flookburgh Band are holding their hugely popular ‘Last night of the Proms’ concert in Victoria Hall, Grange, and they are delighted to confirm that joining them this year is guest singer, Sue Harrison. The Textile Landscape The work of textile artist, Penny Hillier- Evans’ is currently on show in Grange library and can be viewed up until 12th August. During the exhibition period there will be two opportunities to see Penny demonstrate how she creates her beautiful artwork. The first is on 9th August between 2 - 4pm and then again on 12th August between 10am - 12 noon. Penny can be contacted at her studio in Grange on 015395 33968.

Prom Art On Sunday 16th July, Prom Art held an extra exhibition in addition to their usual end of month event. This proved to be very successful and well attended. A beautiful sunny day, there were a wide range of crafts on display, and in particular, a unique display of pyrography which is the art of burning an image into wood to create unusual artwork. The next event will take place on Sunday 30th July, and is well worth a visit.

THE OLD VICARAGE NEWSLETTER Allithwaite, Grange-over-Sands

Welcome to our Spring Newsletter - we’ve had an exciting few months with lots of new activities and events April

Rachel Mercer returned at the start of the month to give a stunning concert that the residents thoroughly enjoyed. Spring made our gardens bloom and we filled The Old Vicarage with flowers including an amazing daffodil display and flower oasis created by the residents for Easter. The residents put up flags and bunting for St. George’s Day and we had a traditional St. George’s Day Meal including a delicious Victoria Sandwich. We celebrated Easter with eggs for staff and residents, as well as an Easter Meal.

We baked cupcakes as part of our Easter celebrations and the residents reminisced whilst eating traditional sweets brought in by the staff.

May

We started the month with a visit from Mollie & Gilbert, 2 baby lambs from Low Bankside Farm, brought by Martin Fishwick. Our residents loved stroking the lambs – sadly we couldn’t keep them! We took advantage of the good weather with outings to Holker Hall and Grange cafes. We have decided to make our garden a bird sanctuary, so with the advice of Watchers bird food shop, we have put up a range of feeders – the results were almost instant. We look forward to bird watching throughout the year. Our residents made some ornate butterfly decoupage, which looked stunning and we have used them to decorate The Old Vicarage.

We ended the month with a visit from Bon Marche who brought a wide range of clothes and our residents enjoyed selecting summer wear.

The month ended with a visit by Active Minds Remiscence, who sang songs, told jokes and made our residents laugh. We were also visited by a traditional choir singing hymns from Taize.

Visit by Black Horses Cartmel

In another first for us, we hired an incubator and hatched some chicken eggs. We enjoyed watching them grow and we invited 2 classes from Allithwaite School to come and look at them. After 10 days the chicks returned to the farm they came from. Next time we hope to have ducks. David Dale came on the Summer Solstice to sing, tell folktales and read poems to our residents. We invited Furness Clogg Dancers to come and visit and they put on a barnstorming concert for us.

On a glorious summer evening we went to Allithwaite Church Barbecue and had all the hot dogs and burgers we could eat before we sat back with a glass of wine to relax.

The chicks planning a great escape

We did some outdoor gardening and potted a huge range of plants - they looked great alongside our sunflowers. We took advantage of the sunny weather with lots of games in the garden as well as having our weekly choir sessions in the sun - followed by ice creams and ice lollies, of course.

The hit and miss of Guided walks During my time at Brown Robin Nature Reserve, I have done many guided walks which I really enjoy as I get to enthuse people about wildlife, conservation and sometimes helping people to see things that they have never seen or which are very rare. But you can never guarantee if a walk is going to be good or not. The weather certainly plays a part, but you can’t order wildlife to appear at will; however there are some tricks of the trade so to speak. I have only ever had one almost perfect walk, where everything seemed to fall into place and it was as if the wildlife was waiting for us to appear in order to put a show on. The walks are not just about seeing wildlife though. They are about showing how we manage for conservation and if we see some interesting species it’s a bonus. One particular walk I remember, many years ago now, is when I stopped the group to highlight a Goldfinch. We all honed in

with our binoculars and a few seconds later a voice was heard saying; I never knew birds were different! I looked around and some of the group looked very shocked, however I suppose they had noticed birds but took little interest in them until the Goldfinch maybe. Another funny, and slightly embarrassing, moment was shortly after leaving college. I was full of knowledge and keen to impress, so I started talking about the flora using Latin names, only to hear a loud voice say “What the

On 5 July, nine Grange Ramblers and one dog set off from Loftus Hill car park in Sedbergh to climb Winder Fell. The weather was ideal with a blustery wind keeping us cool on the steady ascent. A ‘banana’ break was taken near the summit before finishing the ascent to the Trig Point for spectacular views of the surrounding Fells. Lunch was at the end of the steep descent alongside Settlebeck Gill and then onto visit the site of a Norman castle before returning to the Fell and a visit to Lockbank Farm for a well earned ice cream. Good exercise, spectacular views and ice cream to finish - a perfect day!

Leave the leaves on and if you are feeling crafty you could have a go at plaiting them together into a string. I also try and remove the dirty outermost layer of skin and as much dirt as possible as it can harbour moisture or bugs or moist bugs, I suppose. Where it is, in some ways, the beginning of the end of the season don’t get despondent, you can still make sowings of rocket or spinach and things like lambs lettuce and the spicier oriental salads such as mizuna which will usually last well into the winter as will Swiss chard. It’s your last opportunity of the year to prune stone fruits such as cherries or plums and it’s worth cutting out any old canes from summer fruiting raspberries and tie in any new ones before they are battered by autumn winds.

“Found ourselves in Cark at lunchtime, and didn’t have anything planned so thought we’d try the Rose & Crown. Very good decision! Warm welcome, interesting menu, excellent beer selection... My chicken stuffed with Cumberland sausage and wrapped in smoked bacon with a creamy leek sauce and vegetables was delicious and my husband was very happy with veggie cannelloni served with garlic bread and salad. And the portions were huge! At under £25 with a drink each, it was good value. If we lived locally, it would be one of our regulars!” TRIP AVDISOR

FOOD & DRINK

A Chocolate bar to really sink your teeth into Anne and Louise are thrilled to finally open their chocolate bar in Grange. In 2016, kitchens were created in the vast cellars allowing them to create Choco-Loris’ chocolate bar in the original kitchen adjacent to the shop. Offering a full menu of breakfast and brunch alternatives this is a unique experience with something for everyone. The ideal meeting place to relax and enjoy a few chocolates with a tea, coffee glass of prosecco or even a chocolate cocktail.

It is often said that people fail to appreciate what’s on their doorstep, but when it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it should not be overlooked. So we say make the most of August at home in the Lakes, whether it be canoeing on Lake Windermere, taking part in a guided walk, enjoying an outdoor concert or visiting one of the many country shows, farmers markets and food festivals. Wherever you go and whatever you do, picnics are the perfect way to celebrate being out and about in the Lakeland countryside. And what says ‘picnic’ better than a Higginsons hand-made Pork Pies, slices of roast ham with a crusty baguette and a tasty relish? Not to mention a freshly baked Scone or Eccles Cake

It is not often you hear positive comments on the Cumbrian weather, but there are some perks and one of them is successful cheese making. Here at Low Sizergh, our cows enjoy a seasonal grass diet. During winter, the herd eats silage made from the previous summer’s grass and because we have a wet climate it is often cut later than is usual. This mature grass contains more fibre, which boosts the butterfat content of the herd’s milk and makes it excellent for cheese.

Anne, Louise and Chris would like to thank all their customers for their support and look forward to seeing them enjoy their new chocolate bar.

AUGUST... is for getting out and about! We don’t get the longest or sunniest summers up here in Cumbria but when we do get a spell of good weather, we should be making the most of it and ‘getting out and about’ in this beautiful part of the world.

Cheese & Bacon Scones

to complete the feast! You will find all this and more in our Deli Picnic Packs – priced at only £20, these carry-away, two-course gourmet picnics feed four people. The Picnic Packs are PRE-ORDER ONLY, so call 015395 34367 to orders yours today!

We were recently asked to provide our Kendal Creamy cheese for a chef demo at Countryfile Live, where produce from National Trust tenant farms is being showcased. We’re not sure what their recipe is going to be but here’s one that shows the cheese off perfectly: Ingredients

100g Winter Tarn butter, plus extra for greasing 10 rashers Higginson’s streaky bacon 275g self-raising flour ½ tsp baking powder 150ml LS raw milk

50ml vegetable oil 1 LS free range egg 150g Kendal Creamy cheese (grated) 1 tsp sea salt Handful snipped chives

Method Heat your oven to 200°C and grease a muffin tin. Fry the bacon for 5 mins until golden. Let it cool, then chop into chunks and set aside. Combine the flour, baking powder and sea salt in a bowl. Using your fingers, mix in the butter until it resembles breadcrumbs.

In a small bowl, whisk together the milk, oil and egg. Tip into the dry mixture and gently mix until the flour is mostly moistened (lumps will remain). Stir in the bacon, chives and cheese, then spoon into the tin. Bake for 20 mins or until the tops are golden brown. Serve warm.

DON’T MISS: Cartmel Show on Wednesday 2ND August. FIND US IN THE FOOD HALL…with a range of great value Show Offers plus some rather special seasonal delicacies! This local Show is a great family day out, with agricultural classes, displays and a Food Theatre with live demonstrations. COMING UP: National Burger Day takes place on Thursday 24th August… we will have some great offers on our tasty handmade burgers! Why not get stocked up with all the extras: smoked bacon, tasty relish, beef tomatoes and cheese and have a ‘Build your own Burger’ evening?

CHURCH NEWS

St Mary’s

ADVERTORIAL

Lifting the Veil on Boarbank

July has been a rather ‘different’ month at St Mary’s, beginning with an interactive service of outdoor worship focussing on ‘Creation’, held in bright sunshine in the grounds of Abbot Hall Hotel and followed by a BBQ. The following day various outdoor activities around Allithwaite replaced the normal Sunday service finishing with a Jacob’s Join picnic lunch at church. Another picnic in the middle of the month following the morning service gave an opportunity to enjoy the Open Garden at the home of one of our members and also to get to know our new Mission Partners, the Marshall family, who are working with refugees in Malta and currently visiting their supporting churches in the

UK. On the last Sunday of the month we are looking forward to another service of outdoor worship – this time with our friends at St John’s Church in Flookburgh. During the month, we hosted a Wine and Cheese evening at which Rev Rach gave a

Methodist Ministers are called to circuits, not just to churches. With this in mind, members of the South Lakeland Circuit travelled by coach to Shirley Methodist Church, Birmingham on Sunday 25th June for a very special event. The Minister, Rev Jo Rand, from Grange was to be ordained, during the Annual Methodist Conference.

It was a very happy occasion, but also a reverent and challenging one, as the congregation are asked to support and uphold the ministers in their work. The candidates, too, are ‘deemed to be worthy to be ordained’ and as Jo returns to work in Grange and the surrounding areas, we are happy to have her here, doing the work she is called to do.

The work of uniting the URC and Methodist churches in Grange is progressing, and both congregations held consultation meetings during the past week. Lots of decisions will have to be made, and these will affect the future work of the churches in this area.

All welcome The Church meets every first and third Sunday each month at 10.30am. at Grange Primary School. For other meeting locations please call 015395 83455 or visit www.hopechurchgrange.org.uk

Grange is a very busy place. Grange may be a place of retirement, but it is a busy place where things happen with courtesy.

The streets are busy. I arrived at Grange in early February. The first thing I noticed was that many cars seem to jostle for too few parking places; and some of those that do park seem to end up in a somewhat unusual angle.

The social side is very active. There are many interest and support groups. People join them in good numbers. There is also the hidden networking that is taking place. As a clergyman, I have always been privileged to see this hidden work of kindness that is done by people for

a neighbour. It is clearly evident in Grange.

But in all this activity people have time for others. I noticed the consideration of people towards each other. On one busy occasion in church, I wondered how the frail would get out of the cars on our crowded road. I was told that in Grange, you stop in the road to offload people. The other cars wait. It is that sort of place.

So I conclude that Grange is a community of considerate people, who are active in networking and building up social connection, in the midst of (occasional) parking mayhem. Fr. Philip Smith

Our patients have been enjoying the sunshine on our terrace with far reaching views to the forest of Bowland, and beyond. URC

We have now had two full months of joint worship on Sunday mornings with our Methodist friends.

It has been a most rewarding time for us all, particularly finding how inspirational it can be to have a sizeable congregation every week. We have had our consultations, both within the congregations and amongst those who use our halls, which will inform the first suggestions with regard to building use in the future. Any organisation which has not completed their survey can still return their reply.

On July 8th five members of the URC congregation went to the ‘Big Day Out’ at Southport, where we heard some inspirational speakers and met friends old and new. The monthly walks continue, with this month’s being on 10th August to Rusland Pool.

CHURCH NEWS

Thoughts in Retirement Initially, Mass had been celebrated by visiting Priests at the house of Mr Westwood, a parishioner. However, on 22nd August 1882 Father John Bilsborrow arrived in Grange over Sands and it is from that date that the Mission is dated. For 18 months Father Bilsborrow celebrated Mass in the dining room of the house of Captain John Sutcliffe-Witham at Kents Ford. Grange was fortunate in having a very generous benefactor in the Captain. He had agreed to purchase Kent’s Ford on the understanding that a parish was to be established and it was here that Father Bilsborrow lived when he arrived in Grange. In addition to providing accommodation and facilities for Mass Captain Sutcliffe also provided an income for the Parish Priest of £100 per annum for five years. Great comfort indeed!

On 29th May 1883, the foundation stone of the Church of St. Charles Borromeo was laid and from that day until post Easter 2017 the Catholic community of Grange, Flookburgh and Districts has been privileged to celebrate daily the supreme gift of the Eucharist (Holy Mass), the source and the summit of the liturgy and the Catholic faith. Today, Pentecost 2017, this is no longer the case. In the not too distant future, St Charles will be linked with Christ the King, milnthorpe and Our Lady of Lourdes, Arnside. One Priest, Father Philip Smith, now responsible for three parishes. Many see this as a disaster; what has happened they ask? To suggest reasons for this is a story in itself but the growth of secularism, materialism, decline in faith practice in families, the abuse scandal in the Church, relativism etc are a few possibilities to look at! Personally, yes, it is unfortunate but I do not see it as a disaster but rather as an opportunity to explore the need for a real faith

explosion, ie to seriously pray and work for a true Pentecost experience to enable the laity to see the significance and importance of their baptism by which they become aware of their part in the Body of Christ, the Church. That, together with and NOT apart from the ordained ministry (Bishops, Priests, deacons) they form ‘the Church’ working for the proclamation of God’s Kingdom. To me, this is an opportunity for growth rather than a disaster. An opportunity for opening up the Church in her liturgical life. In no way would I, or do I, decry or underplay the importance of the Sacrifice of Mass, it is the source and the summit, men and women have died to preserve this gift but what I say is that there are so many other ways of giving glory to and praising God without the need of an ordained minister. Jesus comes to us in word and sacrament. An extended Morning Prayer, the Prayer of the Church where the psalms used by Jesus and the Apostles can be and are recited daily throughout the world. Exposition of the Blessed

Sacrament, a time for silent reflection, A Prayer Group where God is praised in, word and song, small groups to share and learn about the word of God in the scriptures, DVD’s to learn more about one’s faith, Stations of the Cross during Lent and the Good Friday afternoon service, the Rosary. None of these need an ordained minister for them to take place. But the Catholic community for years has been used to ‘Father’ seeing to everything ‘churchy’. The Priest is ordained and trained to administer and teach the sacraments, to recognise and care for the sick, the homeless, the lonely etc. In this latter part he should work alongside the laity not separate from them. No, Today is the time for growth. As Cardinal Newman said: “To grow is to change and to become perfect is to change often.” This is the day made by the Lord. Let us pray we do not miss the opportunity. Fr. Parker (now retired) PS If you want to borrow money ask a pessimist, he won’t expect to get it back!

SOCIETY ROUND-UP Grange Garden Society

On 10th June, members braved the weather to man the Society stall at the Edwardian Festival and thank you for your support. On the 16th, Tom Attwood, of Abi & Tom’s Garden, Witherslack, spoke to the Society about ‘Re-Interpreting the Herbaceous Border’.Illustrated with inspirational slides from many beautiful gardens, the Herbaceous Border was shown to be interpreted in many different ways. Traditional formal planting was the most popular with gardeners and the public at large but newer informal, less structured planting was gaining popularity, using grasses and varying levels of growth and size of plants in unconventional ways. Members were given many new alternatives and planting ideas for upgrading their borders and left the meeting with much to ponder. After a visit to Dutton Hall, Ribchester on 7th July the members look forward to talks on 21st July ‘Wild Orchids’ and on 18th August ‘Meconopsis’. A visit to Yorkshire Gardens is planned for 1st September, travelling by coach. Meetings are in the URC Hall Kents Bank Road at 7.30 Visitors are welcome.

Food was the theme for the July meeting, when three carloads of us set out for the ‘Hawkshead Relish’ factory. We were first treated to drinks and many samples, whilst hearing about the past, present and future of this Company. We then had an interesting tour of the factory. We then moved on to the shop in Hawkshead which is only a mile away, and were tempted by more samples to buy from the vast range of jams, chutneys and sauces which are all made at the factory. Most of us had ideas for presents including Christmas. Much was discussed over the excellent lunch which we then enjoyed at the ‘King’s Arms’ just across the square: The earlier sampling had clearly not spoiled our appetites, and the kind weather even allowed some to eat outside. Our September meeting (at Flookburgh Village Hall) is on Wednesday 6th. 1.30pm for members, followed by an open meeting at 2pm when Pam Bolton will tell us all about ‘Rag Rugging’. Visitors are most welcome to join us for this talk. £3 including refreshments.

Members of the North Lonsdale Branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild held their monthly meeting on Tuesday 11th of July. Group member Sue Tyldesley led the day’s class which was on felting, in particular, the addition of stitching and pre- embroidered pieces at the pre-felt stage prior to fully felting the work. There was a great variety of work produced by the enthusiastic members who all agreed that it had been a most enjoyable class. There is no meeting in August. The next meeting is on Tuesday 19th of September which is the A.G.M followed by a talk by Sue Widden on the Guild Collection. At the meeting on October the 10th there will be a visiting tutor, Priscilla Jones from Lancaster.

The club is delighted to have welcomed two more new members in July. In July twelve members enjoyed a sociable walk including a visit to Birkrigg Stone circle followed by a meal. Work on the sensory garden (in Park Road gardens) continues including new planting and the installation of a large bug house “ Buggingham Palace” to encourage beneficial insects in years to come. Look for the Soroptimist logo incorporated into the design! Singing for Memory on Thursday mornings at Allithwaite Community Centre will restart on September 14th. If you or someone you know has problems with memory, mild or moderate dementia or problems with speech why not consider attending. Ring Janice 58001 or Isabel 36378 or Sheila 33422 for information and to book. Anyone interested in joining the club or getting further information on events or our work/ Singing for Memory sessions see our website www.sigbi.org/grangeover-sands/

The business part of July’s meeting included a report from the AGM in Liverpool which was led by Sue Needham as Margaret Brennand, the representative, was unable to attend. Both Resolutions were passed; one was about alleviating loneliness and the other to reduce the microplastic fibres entering the ocean. In a change to the advertised programme, Catherine Hunt, one of our members gave a most interesting talk on ‘Aromatherapy’. She had a wide variety of natural, organic herbal products which members sampled and Catherine explained what they were used for. There isn’t a meeting in August as the WI has its main fundraising event with a stall at cartmel Show on 2nd August. It is hoped members will provide cakes, savouries, jams, chutneys and produce for sale on the day.

At our last meeting Jan Abbot told us the fascinating story of her life and how she challenged herself to do a host of things she had only dreamed about in her younger years. At the top of the list was running the London Marathon and she ended up doing it 3 times. She also had a go at fire eating and showed some very scary photos of herself spitting fire. And she went on some breath-taking treks in furthest Asia. She really showed how she had risen to the theme of her talk – never too late to change your life. And she had even written a book about her experiences. It certainly gave us food for thought for our Bucket Lists. A group of members had a super evening at Williamson Park, walking and watching the play Treasure Island. The weather was very kind to us except for the last half hour when the heavens opened but this seemed to add to the atmosphere. Harry King will be talking to us in August about his career in local media. New members are very welcome

at our meetings. Contact Margaret for more details on Grange 36735.

Twelve members enjoyed a strawberry tea at the Villa. A late summer outing is planned for September 6th involving a Matinee at the Keswick Theatre to see a comedy called ‘Handbags’.There is an option to stay in the town or take a boat trip. The speaker Simon Thomas of the “Staff of Life Bakery” gave an entertaining account of his life in bread making, starting on Kendal market, then a cafe at the back of what is now Charlie`s Bar, WI markets , and the indoor market. A grant enabled him to set up the present bakery 18 years ago. He spends less time there now and runs bakery courses, contributes to Cumbria Life, writes and does consultancy work. He had come hot foot from Manchester where he is spending 3 weeks baking for a restaurant during the Manchester International Festival of the Arts. He had many amusing tales to tell August no meeting. September 12th Mills on the River Kent by Iain Johnston. Visitors welcome Tel.52302.

At our June meeting, Mark Instone, of Urban Saints, spoke to us about ‘Reaching Tomorrow’s Leaders’. He explained that Urban Saints is the successor of Crusaders, and they, like many other organisations, are continually seeking and mentoring those who will continue to lead the work in the future. It is too easy to rely on plans that have worked in the past and not be prepared to change for the future. In discussion, we found most of us had some leadership role, which had been developed by Christian influences from parents, family and youth leaders. From the Bible, we learnt how many great leaders were often reluctant and frightened when their door of opportunity opened but recognised that God had a plan for them as for each of us and past experiences can all impact on our training. We need to encourage our next generation of leaders. Mark gave us much food for thought! There is no August meeting, so on September 19th we look forward to

welcoming a return visit from Rev Gay Pye, a hospital chaplain, who has recently been on a sponsored walk from Stafford to London , and entitles her talk ‘The NHS – worth walking for?’

Cartmel & District Flower Club

Cartmel & District Flower Club celebrated 50 years of fellowship and beautiful flower demonstrations, summer outings and Christmas Galas with a special afternoon tea at the Netherwood Hotel. A warm welcome was given by Chairman Margaret Turner to guest of honour Rosie Bond, a member of NAFAS NW Area Executive and entertainment was provided by the Ukulele Ladies, who played nostalgic songs from the mid-20th century. A memorable and enjoyable afternoon was had by all present. The club’s next monthly meeting will be on Monday, August 21st at 2pm in Cartmel village hall, which will feature the Groocock Cup competition. Contact Dianne Cameron on 015395 32319 for information on membership and events.

Grange Probus Club

Grange Probus held their Summer Luncheon at the Netherwood Hotel and had earlier enjoyed a fascinating and informative visit to Lancaster Castle. The next monthly meeting will be on Monday, August 14th at 10.30am at the Netherwood Hotel when David Tomlinson will talk about “The Staff of Life” with a bread making demonstration. The Club welcomes retired men and women as new members and meets on the second Monday of each month for interesting talks. Contact Chairman Chris Harris on 015395 34221 or Secretary Sean Jameson on 32105 for information on membership and events.

RNLI Grange Flag Day The Grange over Sands branch of the RNLI held its annual Flag Day on 8 July this year. With the advantage of good weather throughout the day and thanks to our Flag Day organiser, her team of willing volunteers and most of all our generous donors, the amount raised was £761.61. Since there were no expenses, this is the amount that the Branch will send in for the lifeboats. This was an excellent result, better than many previous years, perhaps partly reflecting the

fact that from this year the RNLI has abandoned house-to-house collections. As Chairman of the Branch I should like to thank all the volunteers and donors who contributed to such a successful outcome. May I also appeal for anyone interested in joining our Committee to get in touch with me on 015395 32385 – changes in current members’ circumstances mean that we are again in need of new volunteers. LETTERS

Letters to the Editor are published on the understanding that they may have to be shortened to fit available space. Publication of a letter in no way reflects the views of Grange Now. All letters must be accompanied by a name and address even if the correspondent requests anonymity. In this case ‘name and address supplied’ will be added.

Dear Editor,

Dear Sir / Madam,

We would all like to give Sara Porter our very best wishes for her new venture. She is leaving Kids Club after 11 years of dedication and commitment to all the children in her care. We will all miss her friendly, cheerful manner and great sense of humour. “Good Luck” from all past and present staff, committee members, parents and children. “Hope to see you around school for a catch up from time to time” Grange Kids Club

I wanted to extend my gratitude to the kind soul who found my car key at the Edwardian Bandstand in Grange-over-Sands.

Dear Editor, I would prefer that the Town Council concentrates its scarce expert resources on more important issues than policing banners and protracted building works. We have been urged to take pride in Grange - to cease placing unsightly banners! The recent tragic events in Manchester and London puts this criticism into perspective: punitive. Grange has a strong vibrant community which at its heart embraces fairness, equality, diversity and inclusivity. Take pride in Grange. Be non-judgemental. Be openminded. Be open to change and we will thrive and continue to enjoy the special quality of life that Grange offers us. Name and address supplied

WALKING FOR ROSIE We would like to thank everyone who attended the walk, on 16 June 2017, donated, sponsored and came to Ravenstown club. You all raised a huge £1900 for us. Every penny will go towards our extension and adaptations for Rosie. A massive thank you again we really appreciate it. Love sarah and stuart

Dear Editor, Thank you for printing the letter from Mr. K.E.Walker in Issue No.311 (July)

Dear Editor,

South Lakes Community Learning & Skills

The keys were passed over to a Grange-over-Sands Town Council representative who subsequently handed over the keys to Grange Information Centre, whose aim is to offer help and advice for residents and visitors alike. One of the valuable services offered by Grange Information Centre is to reunite lost property with their owner. Grange Information Centre now takes all lost property since the Police Station in Grange-over-Sands closed.

Although the dump of spoil and traffic lights on Holme Lane have now been removed, the ill-conceived development on Jack Hill is now resulting in contractors parking their vehicles on the side of Allithwaite Road and at the Kirkhead Road junction, reducing visibility around the bend in the road and damaging

door in August. This will list all courses currently available in the South Lakes and Barrow. For those of us that prefer to find our information online, all courses for September onwards will be available to view on our website The website gives you the added advantage of being able to book a place on the course of your choice and pay online using your debit or credit card.

If you would like to speak or enrol on a course with us in person, we are running a number of Enrolment Mornings across the area at the start of September, we can be found at:

and a credit to the town of Grangeover-Sands. Follow the day spent in Grange-over-Sands we had an uneventful train journey to the park and ride facility at our local train station in Liverpool. When it was time to leave the train, I started to search through my pockets to find my car key. Keep in mind that the spare car key had recently malfunctioned and this was the only working key we had. Needless to say, I was upset when I noticed that my key was not where it was supposed to be. Furthermore the lead time for a replacement key was at least five days. There are literally no words to say how appreciative and relieved I was to find the keys had been handed in to lost property. This big thank you is for the kind soul who found my keys as well as the dedicated group of volunteers who run Grange Information Centre. Andrew, Victoria, Elizabeth and Samuel Grimbly, Liverpool grass verges. Regarding the overhanging trees and shrubbery on Kirkhead Road I raised my concern with the candidates for the recent County Council elections and with the highway authority, and received no acknowledgement. Perhaps Cllr Wearing (to whom I am sending a copy of this) may now have time to take this up as a matter of urgency. Yours sincerely, C.J.Wright, Kents Bank

FRIENDLY HONEST PROPERTY ADVICE

Top Tips for selling your property Summer is upon us and the property market continues to thrive. With sales levels increasing many people are thinking about putting their property on the market and in order to get the best agreed price on your property there are generally a few handy tips to bear in mind. You never get a second chance to make a first impression! Never has this been truer than when it comes to property marketing so presentation is of paramount importance. Most purchasers have already made their minds up as they walk through the front door so make sure that any viewings are starting on the front foot and potential purchasers aren’t noticing the things that need doing.

Make sure that the approach to your property is clean and tidy, remove any weeds from paths, maintain borders and gardens and clear a path through the front door. After all this is the gateway to the rest of the property. Doing the simple things can make the biggest difference. A lick of paint throughout can breathe new life into a property whilst exposing as much floor space as practical – a study has even suggested that every square foot of cleared floor space is equivalent to £238!

De-cluttering can have a huge effect on potential purchaser’s perceptions of a property. Try to make sure your property doesn’t look busy. Some buyers can’t see past other people’s belongings but do still need an idea of how the room can be used so don’t leave it too bare either. Carry out any minor repairs. A dripping tap or faulty light can leave viewers thinking more about the jobs required than the property itself. And when it comes to the actual viewing take advantage of the accompanied service offered by the agent. Viewers are more open and expressive when the owner is not around.

Finally, and most importantly, choose the right agent to sell your property. Look for an agent that is established in the town – long standing agents with a continued record of selling property in the area you are marketing, pro-active at selling and marketing property and backed up by a wealth of local knowledge. Don’t be afraid to ask an agent about their sales record, after all it’s the allimportant agreed sale that you are looking for.
