Investment Matters By Jason Crane APFS CFPTM
Investment Portfolio management is not simply a case of investing new money to build greater wealth; monitoring performance and using annual tax shelters where possible is crucial.
Given time investments have the potential to make good profits, however, these profits may give rise to a Capital Gains Tax liability (CGT), which in turn reduces the actual profit you have made. Both ISA and CGT allowances are annual, if you do not use your allowance in any tax year you lose it. With this in mind it is crucial that you use your allowances where possible.
Bed & ISA is a process whereby you sell some of your investment holdings, ensuring that the profit is within your CGT allowance (£11,300 for 2017/18), and then buy back the asset in a tax efficient ISA. By doing this you can fully utilise or simply top up your ISA meaning all future profits are protected from CGT, in addition to this the income generated within the ISA will be free of income tax. This could be of particular interest to those that need an income from their investments as you could effectively get a ‘pay rise’ once the income generating asset moves into a tax efficient ISA.
This principle can also be used for shares; so shares you may have acquired from demutualisation or perhaps an inheritance could be used to Bed & ISA, potentially making the administration simpler at the same time as ensuring they are tax efficient.
Bed & ISA may also be an opportune time to review your investments and consider alternative holdings as you can choose different funds or shares when you use the sales proceeds to fund your ISA. A Financial Planner would work with you to ensure that you are continuously using your annual allowances where possible. This would give you the comfort that you would be getting the maximum return from your investments each tax year, and at the same time ensuring that your investments continue to meet your objectives and needs.
The comments in this Editorial are only general and should not be taken as specific advice. It is important that you seek independent advice before taking any action on the above, or any other, subjects. It should be noted that the value of some investments can fall as well as rise therefore you may get back less than originally invested. Past performance is not necessarily a guide to the future. Bailey Lane Crossing subject to emergency closing Just as we are going to press, Grange Now has learnt that Bailey Lane Level Crossing is to be closed for six months from 25th August 2017. This will allow a consultation exercise to be carried out on a potential permanent closure of the crossing and a diversion of the footpath to the existing underpass. At the meeting of Grange Town Council on Monday 14th August, it was clear from public response, that there are strong opinions on both sides of the argument and residents are split in their views of whether the crossing should remain open with some stating that Network Rail provided an underpass, at a cost of £1.3 million, to give the public a way of crossing the line safely and others stating Bailey Lane is perfectly safe when used correctly. Grange Town Council stated, “that it wishes to ensure that all
members of the community are consulted properly on this matter and given the opportunity to express their views.” In a letter to Cumbria County Council they requested that, “County Council follows the correct process and procedures in this matter. Grange Town Council therefore requests that the County Council re-opens the level crossing, which is a public right of way, and informs Network Rail that if they wish to close the crossing, a formal application is made under the appropriate law and the public are given their correct and legal levels of involvement. At the meeting Grange Town Council requested that the crossing be re-opened immediately and a full public consultation held before a decision was made on closing the crossing. At the time of printing, the six month closure remains in place.
Soroptimists singing for memory Grange Now was delighted to be invited to attend the Soroptimist’s ‘Singing for Memory’ sessions which take place on Thursday mornings in Allithwaite Community Centre. Jackie (85) told me how much she enjoys the sessions saying they are ‘great fun’ and Aiden said, “Even the soroptimists go away smiling”. Research has shown that singing is very
beneficial for those suffering from memory loss or dementia but these sessions also provide support and ‘a bit of a break’ for carers. The weekly sessions resume on Thursday 14th September. Please ring Janice 58001 or Isabel 36378 for information and booking.

The lights will be provided by the Town Council and they will be spending the Autumn getting everything ready including obtaining permissions from building and landowners to fix the lights and also from the County Council for the streetlights.
Well, maybe we don’t have to talk about the turkey just yet but we can talk about Christmas lights. Grange Town Council have agreed, at an extraordinary meeting on Monday 21st August, to buy Christmas lights for the town.
It will be fantastic to see Grange fully lit up for Christmas and the photo is just a hint of what’s to come.

“The complete restoration of our premises has created a more modern, light and comfortable environment in which to support our clients through the difficult time of their bereavement.” Paul Caine “We will be forever grateful to Little and Caine Funeral Directors in Grange-overSands for their help and kindness during a most difficult time for our family. The personal care and attention they gave us was professional, compassionate and sincere and went beyond what we expected. It reflected not only how much Little and Caine respected our loved one but cared about us. Even after the funeral and service arrangements the organising of a memorial plaque was invaluable. We would certainly recommend them to other families as their help made a difficult experience bearable.” The Tomlinson family

Crowds flock to Cartmel Show Despite the wet and gloomy start to the day, people flocked to Cartmel Show to enjoy a jam-packed day of activities. There was something for everyone from Best in Show to the Industries Tent and one of the highlights had to be the youngsters proudly leading their livestock around the ring. Lisa Inman sent us this photo of her three year old daughter, Macey with her tiny calf, Skye, who is six weeks old.

IT’S FLU VACCINE TIME! This autumn we are offering a number of ways for our patients to get their flu vaccine, with a number of open clinics and also regular bookable slots with our Health Care Assistants on most days of the week. We encourage everyone aged 65 years and over to have a flu vaccination and also those younger patients who have another condition that will put them at greater risk if they catch flu – this includes people with asthma, chronic bronchitis, heart disease and diabetes. People who care for an older person either as part of their job or as a family member or friend can also get vaccinated. All pregnant women should also be vaccinated. If you are eligible this year for a shingles or pneumonia vaccine we can usually give this at the same time as well! We are holding a Saturday morning open clinic on 30th September from 9 – 12 noon, no appointment needed just roll up. We will then be holding weekday afternoon and evening open clinics through October and these will be advertised in the surgery, on our website www.nutwoodsurgery.co.uk and on our Facebook page. You can also book in with our health care assistants. Some people choose to get a flu vaccine at a pharmacy or through their workplace – if you do this please let us know so we can update our records. Often people don’t realise that one of the ways GP practices are funded is through giving flu vaccines, so coming to your local practice is one way you can support the local NHS rather than increasing the profits of national pharmacy chains!
Volunteers from the Grange & District Lions were an invaluable help. We would like to thank everyone who donated prizes and volunteered to help out. We raised £550 which will be donated to charitable causes including the Grange & District Lions.

The rust is history We attended a property recently where the customer had asked us to clean all of the carpets in their home with the exception of the dining room; the reason they explained, was because of rust stains from metal table legs that a previous cleaning company had been unable to remove and they intended to replace that carpet. We asked the customer to let us try our process on it on a ‘no win no fee’ basis which they agreed to do. The results can be seen in the photos and as you might expect, the customer was delighted as it had saved them nearly £1,000 in replacement costs.
So if you have a carpet that you think can’t be ‘revived’ and are thinking of replacing it, give us a call first to see what we can do.
It could be a call that saves you ££££s We are a local, independent specialist carpet cleaning company. Utilising 21st century cleaning processes allied with state of the art equipment, we deliver exceptional results with carpets usually dry within 30 minutes of cleaning. We believe that our carpet cleaning system is probably the best currently available.

Revive Carpet Cleaning
Upcoming Cross Bay Walks
Turning the Bay purple for Alice
We are an independent, family run carpet and upholstery cleaning company, based in Dalton-in-Furness. We like to say we provide the ‘WOW’ factor as that is a common response we get from our customers when they return to see the amazing transformation to their carpets and upholstery. We are able to achieve this through investing in 21st century cleaning processes allied with state of the art equipment. It results in what is probably the best carpet and upholstery cleaning system on the market today. We started the company after I was made redundant from my job in Local Government. A meeting in a pub (as you do) with a chap who owns a carpet cleaning company in Leicester; was so enthusiastic about some new equipment, saying it was by far the best process he had ever used. So I checked it all out and being satisfied that it was a really good process and that there was a market out there, and, Revive Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning was born. Now into our fifth year year on year. We put this down to providing a first class service at a reasonable price which has resulted in a lot of our work coming from recommendations from previous customers. We have also deliberately kept the business on a small scale to maintain the personal level of service that we believe our customers really appreciate. We mainly cover the Furness and South Lakes areas but occasionally go further afield and have recently carried work in Carlisle, Penrith, Lancaster, Bolton and Manchester.
Walk for Reverse Rett and Rosie Phillips On Sunday 17th September, there will be a walk in aid of ‘Reverse Rett’, funding research into a rare genetic condition affecting children locally and worldwide. The time, once again, will be 3.45pm from Arnside arriving in Kents Bank at approximately 7pm.
Guide to the Sands, Cedric Robinson MBE, will be leading the walk. To book your place please telephone Lis on 015395 35512 and leave a message with name, contact number and the number of people who are walking. Adults £10, Children £5 and Dogs £2
On Sunday 3rd September, Jigsaw, Cumbria’s Children’s Hospice, are holding their walk which leaves The Promenade, Arnside, Carnforth, LA5 0AA at 3.45pm and will arrive in Kents Bank at approximately 7pm. Grange Fundraisers and Awareness Volunteers, Barbara and Reg Brown will be at both departure and arrival back venues to help support the Jigsaw Team. It would be wonderful if people could go along and cheer the walkers on which will, of course, be led by the Queen’s Guide to the Sands, Cedric Robinson MBE.
Turning the Bay purple for Alice! On Saturday 30th September, walkers will be turning the bay purple for Alice.
Ulverston based charity, Alice’s Escapes, was founded by the late, inspirational Alice Pyne, who despite having a terminal prognosis, was determined to leave her mark on this world. The Pride of Britain Award recipient, died in January 2013 after battling Hodgkin’s lymphoma for almost six years. Along with her sister, Milly, the duo raised tens of thousands of pounds in order to secure the first holiday lodge. Tragically, Alice lost her battle just days before the first unit, Mabel’s Lodge, was delivered. A second, fully-adapted unit
Sam Johnston, Jigsaw Community Fundraiser said, ‘We are really excited to hold this walk for the 3rd year running. It’s a brilliant event for the whole family to enjoy, for people of all ages. Not only is the walk an exciting experience itself, it’s a great way to support all the specialist work done by Jigsaw, Cumbria’s only Children’s Hospice’.

followed a year later and, expanding on Alice’s dream, a third unit, exclusively available to bereaved parents, opened last year.
Vicky said, “Losing a child is the most horrific thing in the world and, while we can’t change things, we can show we care. Please help us to continue Alice’s amazing legacy”.
Full details of the walk can be found on the charity’s Facebook page: Alice’s Escapes. You will also be able to buy Purple t-shirts and sweatshirts and they will be posting a 25% discount voucher code on the page. Adults will be £10 with accompanied children free of charge.
Many thanks to Janice Longmire who is organising this event.

Still time to sign up for Stephens half-marathon challenge
Thanks everyone who came along to my question and answer session in Grange on the 1st August. Don’t worry if you missed it I am back in Grange as part of my Summer Tour on the 29th August. We will also get along to Allithwaite, Flookburgh, Cark and Cartmel on that day. That said I am aware that this trip will probably be just before you receive your copy of Grange Now and so telling you about it may just cause frustration, so can I reassure you by telling you that my plan is to do many more of these type of sessions over the coming months and years.
Last month, we ran an article about local decorator, Stephen Wilson, and his desire to run three half-marathons in three days in aid of St Mary’s Hospice. He will run Langdale on Friday 8th and finish with the Great North Run on Sunday 10th but he would like as many people as possible to join him for the Allithwaite half-marathon on Saturday 9th September and the full entry fee of £10 will go to the Hospice. The race,
They are a great opportunity for me to understand the issues that people have and where I can do most to help them. At the session in Grange we discussed everything from Brexit to dog poo! I have taken away all the actions that came up and we will be doing all we can to sort things out as quickly as possible. The news that the Government has abandoned its plans to electrify the Lakes Line, while very disappointing, may have a silver lining, particularly for those of you who use the Furness Line. When the minister told me they had changed their minds about the plan (that after I don’t know how much was spent cutting down trees and general preparation along the line) he did commit to investigating investment in new bi-mode trains. These would run on both diesel and electricity and so would be perfect for the Furness Line where, to be honest, getting a commitment to electrification has always been a significant challenge. As we have seen already with commitments from this Government they need to be taken with a slight pinch of salt but I will keep pressing them until we see action. As ever, if you need to get in touch please email tim@ timfarron.co.uk or call 01539 723 403. Thanks for your support Tim
which starts at 11am, sets off from Cartmel Priory School and there are prizes for race winners and age categories but all levels of competitors are very welcome. Full details of the race can be found on Allithwaite Running Club’s website. For those who would like to sponsor Stephen you can do so through his Just Giving Page, using the link ‘Stephen’s Three Half Marathons In Three Days’.
County Matters
Firstly, I must thank Geoff Critchley and his Committee for organising such a fine show of historic vehicles on Sunday 13th August on Grange Playing Fields. A great day was had by everyone and we look forward to next year’s event. A Living Well Fair will be taking place in Grange Library on Friday 15th September, 10am – 2pm. The fair will be aimed at those in later life or planning
for retirement and will be an informal, friendly event for older people and will showcase opportunities to help people find out how to get the best out of later life. There’ll be lots of ideas for healthy living, information on local organisations offering social support, companionship and practical advice on meeting the physical and mental challenges of later life. For further information please contact our local County Council Engagement Officer Carol Last on 01539 713180 or email carol.last@cumbria. gov.uk At the end of July a serious incident happened on the Bayley Lane Railway Crossing

involving two adults and the Barrow to Lancaster train. Fortunately no one was injured but as a result of this near miss a temporary ban on the crossing has been imposed. This should not prove to be an inconvenience as within a two minute walk there is a fully disabled access to the promenade via the subway in main street car park. Therefore I have informed the Town Council I would be supporting a permanent closure of this crossing to ensure public safety. Cumbria County Council and Network Rail are discussing this matter at present. Kindest regards Bill Wearing Conservative County Councillor Grange Division

Paper Capers The latest exhibition at the Beach Hut Gallery is, ‘Paper Capers’, a collection of cartoons. It includes works from John Pepper, Gina Quant, Geoff Waterhouse and former Grange Now deliverer Fionn Jordan. Fionn describes himself as a, “freelance illustrator and mythology sleuth”. MAIN: Fionn Jordan LEFT: Geoff Waterhouse and RIGHT: Gina Quant
Seven decades of entertainment Looking back on outdoor performances of Shakespeare and Oscar Wilde plays, which gave such pleasure, as had six years of productions staged at the Cumbria Grand Hotel, questions about future choices cropped up. Would such large cast plays reemerge in the future?
Grange Drama is about to embark on its eighth decade of entertaining the people of Grange with their wonderful productions. Margaret McDonagh very kindly wrote this article for Grange Now following a celebratory lunch. After their recent 70th Anniversary Lunch, members of Grange Drama reminisced over past theatrical achievements as they looked through archives of memorabilia; still amazed at their own record of fourteen Alan Ayckbourn productions in the last twenty years. Does this warrant an AmDram Oscar in Cumbria?
16
Talk turned to the 2018 Edwardian Festival and the chances of actors again ‘stepping out’ on another General Election Night the same week? Who knows but it can be safely said that no bets were taken as an eighth decade of drama at Victoria Hall beckons . Finally our thanks go to Shirley Parker, the most glamorous of veteran members, for exercising her special cake cutting skills on the day and to the staff of Hampsfell House Hotel for looking after everyone so very well. Shame the rain prevented outdoor theatrical musings but maybe next time …ENCORE!
Don’t miss the next Grange Drama Open Reading Night The play chosen for the next open reading is, ‘The Right Honourable Lady’, written in 2009 by Francis Beckett, which has a cast of three men and two women and is a story of what goes on between the media and modern day politicians. A former BBC journalist moves to a tabloid newspaper where she has agreed to expose the dirt on her ex-schoolmate, who has become a Cabinet Minister, on the understanding that this will lead to further examination of corruption in the government. Although quite a short play the material raises many issues applicable to present politics and provides ground for extensive discussion. Leader: Carol Williams of Lancaster Footlights As always, the reading will take place on Wednesday 20th September in Grange Institute on Main Street and begins at 7.30pm. Even if you don’t want to read why not go along and listen - the kettle is always on I’m told.

Levens Choir Music Director Ian Jones will be conducting and we’re delighted that Adrian Self will be playing for us. The afternoon rehearsal will run from 1.30pm until 5.30pm, followed by an evening performance at 7.30pm of the Dvorak Mass, along with a programme of items from Levens Choir, who will be touring to Norwich (via Southwell Minster) at the end of October. The fee to enrol for the day is £15 for adults and £5 for students, which includes the cost of borrowing a copy of the music if you don’t have your own. Tickets for the evening concert are £10 (free for students and under 18s). Car parking for the day is available at Cartmel Primary School, by kind permission. Oh, and you’ll need something black to wear for the concert! Previous ‘Come and Sing’ days have proved very popular, so do enrol as soon as possible. Harvest Ceilidh
chords and baselines to the mix and set about arranging tunes for the band. It was most fortuitous that they had recently been joined by Sue Booth, an excellent fiddle player and Dave Rogers, a very experienced caller. The ceilidh was enjoyed by one and all and The Sands Band was born.
The Sands Band started life as a U3A group called Playing for Fun, meeting at leader Liz Scott’s house to play folk-based tunes. Then in early 2015, Grange U3A asked if the group could play for an autumn ceilidh for one of their social events. One of the group, Alison Hinds, had played in a professional ceilidh band in the 90s and early noughties and knew what would be required to get the group up to the volume, speed and repertoire required for a ceilidh. She tracked down a keyboard to add
Since then, the band has played for several ceilidhs and concerts and even a wedding reception. There are now too many of them to meet in anyone’s home, so they practice about once a fortnight at Abbot Hall Hotel, who supply them with coffee and invite them to play for the guests from time to time.
Their next ceilidh is a harvest ceilidh on 23rd September at the Victoria Hall, with all proceeds going to the fund to keep the Victoria Hall open. With the harvest theme in mind, there will be optional fancy dress (with prizes!) and suggested themes are barn dance attire, scarecrows, oldfashioned farmers’ smocks, etc. That said, wellies might be a step too far and impede the dancing! There will be a supper included in the ticket price and a bar. Tickets are available from the Tourist Information Office and need to be bought in advance for catering purposes. It’s sure to be a great evening!

Final concert is rather special On Friday 8th September, Grange-over-Sands and District’s concert club’s final concert for the 2017 season is billed as being “rather special and a little bit different”. Matthew Trusler and Ashley Wass will delight the audience with, ‘The Life Begins at Forty Tour’. As Matthew (violin) and Ashley (piano) explain “Since we have each now racked up nearly two decades of playing around the country and the world, including so many wonderful music club experiences, we wanted to create a 40th birthday year tour. We have chosen a handful of the pieces we’ve most relished over the past 20 years, and which we feel have most excited the audiences we’ve played for.” On graduating from Philadelphia’s Curtis in 1998, ‘The Times’ declared of Matthew Trusler that “we might just have an authentic, though British, virtuoso”. “Matthew Trusler has been attracting the kind of praise normally reserved for a young Oistrakh” -The Independent.
Matthew regularly performs in a duo partnership with pianist Ashley Wass, “A thoroughbred who possesses the enviable gift to turn almost anything he plays into pure gold” - Gramophone magazine. As a new venture for the Club, it will be preceded by a free talk from 7pm to 7.30pm, in which the musicians will interview each other, give a humorous account of the evening’s programme, and take questions from the audience. It should be fun. The concert itself starts at 8pm as usual, and admission at the door is £12 but free for children and students. As always the venue is Victoria Hall, Main Street, Grange.

Brown Robin and migration
J P Computers Based in Cartmel Free Consultation Collect and Return service
More and more visitors are reporting migrating birds passing through the reserve, with the latest being two reports of Grasshopper warblers. I myself have seen spotted flycatcher, black redstart and even osprey in the past. So, once again we are approaching autumn. The nights are gradually drawing in and the swifts have gone and some swallows too. The sycamore seeds are ripening, and trees such as the rowan and elder are laden with berries, which in turn will feed new visitors soon to arrive.
Some large skeins of geese can be breathtaking and Brown Robin top field is an excellent place to observe these natural spectacles.
It’s unlikely that we will have the sights of 2010 with 200 Waxwing and over a thousand Brambling, but who knows?
Some by stealth, such as the Redwing, only their faint call being heard in the evenings as they pass over.
Other migrant birds to arrive, that will make their presence know in a much more vocal manner are the geese and whooper swans as they return to their wintering grounds.
If you do encounter skeins of geese or flocks of redwing, fieldfare and mistle thrush, let us know by posting on the facebook group, Wild about Grange. We have had some great postS this summer and thanks to those who keep posting summer may be on its way out, but there is still plenty of wildlife to look forward to. On 2 August 5 ramblers set off the 8 miles walk from Grasmere to Rydal via the Coffin Trail, then onto Loughrigg Fell passing Lily Tarn and Loughrigg Tarn before completing the circuit back to Grasmere. The weather was overcast but dry at the start and a ‘banana’ break was taken seated on the Coffin Stone. Shortly after however heavy rain started and continued for the rest of the walk. Lunch was taken on the top of the Fell by Lily Tarn where despite the rain, good views of Windermere were still enjoyed. At the end of the walk well-earned refreshments were taken in the Grasmere Garden Centre.

so many overcast and grey days. August’s lousiness was highlighted by the wonderful spring we had. You might have noticed many garden shrubs and herbaceous plants have put on masses of growth but I fear the low light levels have meant not such a good year for tomatoes and chilli’s, for mine at least anyway. You (I) might not have been too impressed with the weather and the bumper crops that you had hoped for may not have materialised, so it’s good to take stock this month and even

masochistically let a few hopeful thought’s of next season stir. In the real world, if you haven’t already, you should make sure that all your potatoes and onions are lifted. The wet (wetter) weather along with the cooler days will spoil any that you don’t, (having said that I always miss at least one and it always seems to grow fanatically the following year). Keep picking green and runner beans just as long as you can. If conditions become more arid you can let
the last few dry on the stalks. Courgette’s and tomatoes will hopefully still be producing even in their death throes so dutifully collect what you can, and preserve them however you see fit. You may have some raspberries still to harvest and the majority of your apples will be ready during this month. Keep an eye on squashes and make them a little bed of straw if it’s particularly damp to stop them from spoiling. Here’s hoping that September is so warm and dry that the trees whistle for the dogs!

FOOD & DRINK
September signifies the start of a school year and the return to routine for many families. The challenge of finding healthy and appealing meals to pack for school lunches as well as recipes that are quick to cook but delicious for evening meals. When it comes to making school lunches that your child will love, a few simple ideas can make all the difference! Try swapping bread for tortillas for example, then roll your fillings up so they make attractive rounds when cut. Making extra portions at dinner time gives you the opportunity to use tasty leftovers for packed lunches the next day. Fried chicken and pasta are lovely when eaten cold! And leftover curry can be made into sandwich fillings! Bite-sized food is really tempting for children, so try a few picnic favourites cut into small pieces; cheese cubes, vegetable sticks, cocktail sausages and chicken pieces cooked the night before all work well. When it comes to those evening meals at the end of the day, there is no reason why quick meals need to be unhealthy. Our delicious, marinated chicken
fillets, pastry encased Lamb & Mint pinwheels (made with lean lamb mince) and our lean Turkey Steaks are all very easy to cook (approx. 30 mins in the oven) and taste great with a simple, green salad. All these fresh meats can also be found in our great value ‘Meat for a Week Box’ – the forms are available in-store and on our facebook page. Simply pre-order any 7 items for just £30 to be collected on a day and time of your choosing! For ultimate convenience however, our range of ready meals offer the perfect solution without the usual ‘ready-meal guilt’. You can rest assured that our meals are hand-prepared using our usual high-quality ingredients so take your pick from one of tasty range: chicken curry, lasagne, cottage pie and chilli.
This month, find us at: The WESTMORLAND COUNTY SHOW on Thursday 14TH September! We will have our usual (and unusual) selection of the finest local fresh meats and of course, a mouth-watering mountain of golden, freshly baked pies!
An Excellent Choice... “Found ourselves in Cark at lunchtime, and didn’t have anything planned so thought we’d try the Rose & Crown. Very good decision! Warm welcome, interesting menu, excellent beer selection... My chicken stuffed with Cumberland sausage and wrapped in smoked bacon with a creamy leek sauce and vegetables was delicious and my husband was very happy with veggie cannelloni served with garlic bread and salad. And the portions were huge! At under £25 with a drink each, it was good value. If we lived locally, it would be one of our regulars!” TRIP ADVISOR
Great taste awards The Guild of Fine Food Retailers’ Great Taste awards enable small food and drink businesses to compete against supermarket premium own-label brands. Every year, over 10,000 products are entered and this year 12,000 products were blind-tested by panels of at least eight specialists who awarded them with a star rating. The panels always look for truly great taste. They take into account the texture, appearance and the quality of ingredients; they like a good aroma, a decent bite to a sausage, a smooth lemon curd, rich and crunchy pastry...but everything comes back to the taste. Is it really, truly great? Here in the Low Sizergh Barn farm shop we are proud to stock local winners from this years’ awards. Less than 3% of the assessed products are awarded 3* (the judging criteria for this level being: Exquisite! Wow! Taste That!) so hearty congratulations go to More? The Artisan Bakery from Staveley for their D’Amore Lyth Valley Damson Pie, which will be available from October.
Great Taste stars were also awarded to:

Lifting the Veil on Boarbank
By Matron I was asked, ‘So what exactly do the Sisters do in the Nursing Home?’ Apart from the practical side with one of them being a registered nurse and another a care assistant, the sisters help with escorting patients to hospital appointments; dental appointments etc. But I believe their most important role is pastoral care within the Home, not only for our patients but for their relatives, friends and also the staff. The term ‘Pastoral Care’ is non-denominational, moreover, it is a term used to describe support given both emotionally and spiritually. We all need someone to talk to at times, someone who doesn’t judge us, accepts what we say and offers a sympathetic ear. Some find that someone in their partners or a friend, we at Boarbank have a Community of Sisters who are willing to spend as much time as we need with us. I think the phrase ‘we are blessed’ is very appropriate. Telephone: 015395 32288 manager@boarbankhall.org.uk

SCHOOL REPORT
All smiles at CPS
New rehearsal venue for panto
It was all smiles for these young ladies at Cartmel Priory School on Thursday 24th August. It was of course GCSE results day and although overall passes have dropped nationally it was good news for Stephanie Gardiner who got the results she was looking for and will now got to Ulverston Victoria High School to study biology, psychology and drama. Georgia Carmichael was also very happy with her results and is going to Kendal College to study catering, while Basia Muszynska is going to Lancaster & Morecambe College to study Art and Design.
Is it nearly Panto’ rehearsal time again? Oh no, it can’t be! Oh yes it can!!
Thursday 14th September is the start date for rehearsals for this year’s pantomime, ‘Dick Whittington’ and children involved need to note that the new rehearsal venue is the Mary Lambert Hall at Allithwaite Primary School.
A very happy looking, Charlotte Mallinson, has achieved the grades she needed to enable her to go to on to study psychology, maths and law, while Rachel Cornthwaite will go to Ulverston Victoria to study biology, chemistry and maths.
Directors, Jean and Mick Malkin, ask that, “children be ready with their smiles, energy, singing and acting abilities to join the new Panto’ season rehearsals which take place from 7pm - 8.30pm.
Headteacher, Dr Paul Williams, told Grange Now: “We’re delighted with the results we’ve seen so far and wish the students every success in their chosen career paths.”
If you need further information you can ring Mrs Malkin on 015395 34262.

On the evening of Thursday 13th July the Key Stage Two children of Allithwaite CE Primary raised the roof of Grange Victoria Hall with their star performance of ‘The Wizard of Oz’. The excited audience entered the hall to be welcomed with the visual treat of a vivid yellow brick road cutting its way through the middle of the seats. The performance itself was stunning: visually, musically and dramatically. Dorothy was played superbly by Nerissa Blatchley and her solo singing impressed all there. The audience thoroughly enjoyed booing the

villain wicked witch, played by Alice Kerr. The Tin Man (William Douglas, Scarecrow (Michael Walmsley) and Lion (Becky McCleery) entertained the audience with excellent jokes and wonderful acting. All the other parts were played equally skillfully, with each actor bringing their character to life on stage. The dances were carefully orchestrated, the songs extremely catchy and the costumes full of colour and flamboyancy. It was truly an incredible experience for the children and also, without a shadow of a doubt, for the audience who couldn’t speak highly enough of the experience.

Everyone’s favourite ogre, Shrek, the marvellous Tom S, and his ‘noble steed’ and friend, Donkey, played by the brilliantly funny Holly B-B, took to the Cartmel Priory School stage alongside a misfit gang of fairytale characters in Shrek the Musical. Sent to save the somewhat changeable Princess Fiona, played by Faye H and Martha R, from the dragon, Shrek and Donkey faced all challenges before them with humour and courage to ultimately defy the dastardly Lord Farquaad (Charlie R ‘shrinking’ to the challenge hilariously) and his schemes. The show was an irresistible mix of adventure, laughter and romance,

To build on our success, we are looking forward to working alongside a new and exciting provision within our purpose-built Nursery facility in the New Year. For details of our nursery and pre-school provision, please see our website.
The end of the summer term at Allithwaite was full of adventure and celebration. The residential this year was to a new destination for us, Edinburgh City. The journey began early in the morning at Oxenholme station. Over the next 48 hours, we visited Edinburgh Castle, the Museum, Mary King’s Close, Camera Obscura, Edinburgh Castle and Dynamic Earth. We took in a bus tour (with open top option in the rain) and dined at Pizza Hut – probably the children’s highlight! We all had an exhilarating and exhausting time and the children behaved in such a way to be true ambassadors for our school.

stunning performances by all involved. It was a joy to observe the progression made by our musicians and wonderful to see them perform with confidence and happiness. Our Key Stage One children celebrated their ICT achievements by inviting parents to their powerpoint presentations and I can genuinely write that parents were very impressed. We raised the roof with a stunning musical
performance of The Wizard of Oz at Grange Victoria Hall, we hope that many of you managed to see it. Finally, we had our Year Six Leavers Service. Each of our amazing Year 6 children had summarised their time with us in their own way. We had moving poetry to interpretive dance. Anecdotes and dreams to songwriting and singing with guitar. Each child making us so proud to have taught and nurtured.

Lady Captain’s Day Out at Bentham was enjoyed by over 40 ladies on a glorious summer’s day and the Gent’s Captain’s Day out to Powfoot in Scotland was enjoyed by 28 men.

At our July meeting, Juliet Burd, UK Director of ‘Children of Hope’ - a mission working in Uganda, came and brought us an update of their work. A team from our local churches visit annually to help in education, vocational training and medical work in three villages. The work started in 2007 when Pastor John Bunjo set up the first primary school in Bombo, and since then it has developed in both its activities and its locations. Juliet had only just returned from Uganda so her excellently illustrated talk brought us right up to date. The work in the schools, the clinics and the training centres is expanding in influence all the time. On 19th September, we look forward to welcoming a return visit from Rev Gay Pye, a hospital chaplain, who has recently been on a sponsored walk from Stafford to London, and entitles her talk ‘The NHS – worth walking for ?’ Until recently Gay was vicar of Borrowdale and has previously been a missionary in Korea, North of England Rep for the Bible Society and a prison and hospital chaplain. The meeting is at 10.30 am Abbot Hall, Kent’s Bank preceded by coffee at 10am. Everyone Welcome.

LETTERS
Letters to the Editor are published on the understanding that they may have to be shortened to fit available space. Publication of a letter in no way reflects the views of Grange Now. All letters must be accompanied by a name and address even if the correspondent requests anonymity. In this case ‘name and address supplied’ will be added.
Dear Editor,
Dear Editor,
It is always good to know what is happening in and around the town and to this end many local groups and charities advertise their events with banners on the railing at the Ornamental Gardens. However, the Town Council has received a number of queries about these. Hopefully the information below will clarify the situation and everyone will know what is and what is not acceptable.
I visited Grange on 22nd August 2016 and parked in Main Street Car Park. The previous night it had rained heavily but the rain had stopped when I parked and the day was generally sunny with no further rain. The tarmac of the car park was damp but there was no indication of the trouble to come. When I returned to the car the car park was flooded and my car had been damaged to such an extent that it was written off. I was parked in a line of cars also damaged. I was covered by insurance except for the excess and car hire for a couple of days.
Banners directly advertising a commercial enterprise are not allowed and will be removed by the Town Council.
Please ensure that all banners are put up not more than two weeks before the event and are removed promptly afterwards, usually within twenty four hours. Please ensure banners are clear, clean and a credit to both the event and the town; that they are securely attached to the railings and that all cable ties, string etc. are removed with the banner. Banners should only advertise events within the Cartmel Peninsula.
I wrote to South Lakeland
Ideally, banners should not be more than 1.5metres long. This allows space for several banners at busy times and should mean that they can all be sited in front of the hedges and shrubs, thus not detracting from views into or out of the Ornamental Gardens.
Dear Editor, I would like it to be known through your column that in no way intend to seek reelection as the Chairman of Grange Garden Society.
We do realise that some groups reuse their banners several times and that these may not comply with the 1.5 metre rule and also that the group may not be able to replace them immediately due to lack of funds. However, if and when your group purchases a new banner please ensure it does not exceed the correct length.
Over the last few months, amongst other things, in order to drum up new membership, I delivered details of the Society to every new house in the Grange area which gained a few new members.
If possible, contact details should be included somewhere on the banner.
I hope the above gives clarity to the situation and we can all sit back and enjoy the entertainments and events the town provides.
BSAR Advert Grange Now 47x90 Aug 2017.q Councillor Tricia Thomas.
Can you help? If you could spare 3 hours a week, we are looking for more volunteers to help in our lovely Charity Shop in Grange-overSands on Kents Bank Road. Despite being warned several times that I would be wasting
District Council initially to find out whether the flooding was a frequent occurrence and whether anybody had claimed for flood loss in the car park in the previous 5 years. I found out that flooding was not unusual but no records were kept. I was told that there had been no previous claims. I decided that there was enough evidence of failing on behalf of the Council to claim for my reasonable losses (amounting to £489). I was turned down and eventually I began a small claims court action. This resulted in a court hearing at Chester County Court on 18th July 2017. A few days ago the Council (or their insurers) agreed to settle the matter, without prejudice, covering my
my time, I went ahead and organised a coach trip to two of the best garden centres in Lancashire. Well their warnings proved right. I would like to thank the FIVE members who signed up for it. Not wanting to disappoint friends and neighbours who had signed up, and were very enthusiastic about it, there was no way I was going to cancel and I subsidised the trip from my own pocket to the tune of £214. It was money well spent and I was amply repaid by seeing
original claim plus my costs.
I believe that the SLDC were negligent in not providing clear guidance in the car park on the likelihood of flooding and actively preventing car parking in the danger areas of the car park taking account of the weather conditions that lead to the flooding i.e. previous heavy rain and high tides.
SLDC have a responsibility not only to their own residents but also to the many tourists upon which the South Lake District depends. I encourage people who have suffered loss to claim against SLDC and then perhaps the Council will take action to prevent further damage. Stephen Williams
people enjoy the trip. Much money was spent on plants etc. The coach boot was full and we had an excellent driver, with bags of patience, from Heron Motors.
However, I keep hearing complaints about falling membership and the fact that we don’t have as many trips as we used to have!! Enough is enough. Perhaps someone else will come along and alter all at. Best wishes to them. Tom Peters

Dear Editor, Grange-over-Sands’ Neighbourhood Plan We would like to thank the Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group for their hard work in drawing up a Neighbourhood Plan with many good proposals.
However, we are hoping that they will consider amending it to include a policy on drainage. This is needed because our combined sewer is already over capacity. During periods of intense, or persistent rainfall, torrents of surface rainwater runoff cause flash flooding in Grange-over-Sands and Kents Bank. We have been told that the consultant advising the Steering Group has said that there is not enough evidence that flash flooding is a problem in Grangeover-Sands. We beg to differ! We hope too that the Steering Group will consider adding options,in the Neighbourhood Plan,to improve traffic flow and pedestrian safety in Grange-overSands town centre. These could identify the need for assessments
Dear Editor I would like to express my thanks to our new proprietors of the builder’s yard on Lindale Road, A T Atkinson, for the generosity they have shown to the Victoria Hall Support Group. The recently formed Victoria Hall Support Group is a voluntary organisation with the aim of raising funds to maintain and improve Grange’s Victoria Hall, following the announcement of the
SEL
of a one-way system, weight/width restrictions for through traffic and a disc parking system similar to that used in Milnthorpe.
Sadly, the Neighbourhood Plan did not include the restoration of Berners bridge amongst the plan’s community aspirations. This is disappointing because he original railway bridge was demolished in 2006 after SLDC officials said that it was unsafe. They did not mention that it had deteriorated because they had failed to include it on their maintenance list in 1974.
The Berners bridge access route is still listed as a Public Right of Way. In addition, its reinstatement is included as a key issue in SLDC’s Core Strategy and a recent consultant’s report on SLDC’s Key Service Centres states that replacement of this bridge is important to the success of the lido restoration project. We hope that the Steering Group will agree that reinstatement of Berners railway bridge would benefit residents and help the town’s tourist economy. Valerie Kennedy, On behalf of a group of residents
withdrawal of funding by SDLC. As our first project we aim to create a bar within the Hall, in order to provide income from the sale of drinks and nibbles at functions. The project has been made possible by A T Atkinson, who have kindly donated a considerable amount of timber and varnish, without which we would have struggled to get the project off the ground. Many thanks, A T Atkinson. Roger Handley Chairman, VHSG.

You wanted increased contact with your agents – We have introduced extended office contact hours across the estate agency with a staff member available between the hours of 8am and 8pm from Monday to Friday. We have also embraced technological advances and offer live chat from our website for potential purchasers whilst providing our customers with ‘My Property File’ – an online service allowing owners to access their property details to check viewing feedback and sales progression from the comfort of their home. You wanted the best exposure – By advertising your property on Rightmove (the most visited property website in the UK), Lake District Property and Poole Townsend’s new property centric web site, coupled with extensive marketing within the Lake District Property handout, Poole Townsend’s five town centre offices and the highly effective proactive marketing from the office – matching applicants to property, we give you the best chance of finding the best agreed sale for your property.
You wanted things to be easy – Our all-inclusive sales packages include legal conveyancing on your sale, meaning you are only ever one call away from finding out how your sale is progressing, and are available on a no sale – no fee basis with no withdrawal charges should your circumstances change.
You wanted results! - With the added impact of our revitalised branding, with impressive office fascia’s and stand out ‘for sale’ boards, we now offer the area’s most effective and bespoke marketing package resulting in the highest level of property sales in the South Lakes and Furness.
