The Editor’s Letter We are hoping that there will be an improvement in the situation regarding parking facilities for people who work here, as Kendal workers are being offered parking for £1. So on behalf of the residents and workers in our readership area generally can I ask SLDC when we can look forward to parking for £1. We have written about this several times in Grange Now and have campaigned to get the car park on Hampsfell Road to become available as a low cost parking option for local workers as it is rarely used by anyone. If Kendal are in fact to receive free parking as SLDC leader Giles Archibald suggested on Radio Cumbria on 18th September then presumably SLDC will offer that same facility here too. The next deadline is 13th October and then the Christmas edition is 17th November - both of these will feature the Christmas gift guide. Please get in touch if you would like to suggest Christmas shopping ideas to readers. The Thirlmere zipwire article on page 13 might seem way out of our area and indeed it is, but it is interesting for the whole region as it asks the question of conservation vs. tourism. What do you think? This edition is full of positive news and upbeat stories about the local area from dancing success, golfers raising money, open gardens fabulous fundraising and award winning news from the schools. Even the football team are sporting a brand new strip as seen on the front cover. Against a very gloomy backdrop of international news, this is all very uplifting. If you need to polish up your first aid skills then don’t miss the article on page 9. As always we welcome your input and look forward to hearing from you.

Vicky from At Home organised the raffle and she told Grange Now, “my cousin came up with the idea of selling raffle tickets to raise money for her women’s football team and I thought it would be great thing to do for our under 14’s, who usually have to put up with hand me downs! We sold the tickets at £10 each and every business who bought a ticket had their name put into a hat with the winning entry becoming the team sponsor.” The raffle was drawn on Sunday 3rd September during the Mayor’s Garden party which was hosted this year by Hampsfell House Hotel and the name on the kit will be Johnston’s Jewellers of Grange. Investment Matters

By Gary Richardson FCIB, APFS

Pension ‘freedoms’ have been with us since April 2015. Prior to then the only choice for many was to buy an annuity and with those rates declining for several years they often provided poor value. The ‘freedom’ rules provide significantly more options although that in itself brings more complexity. Benefits can be drawn from age 55. It is still possible to buy an annuity and despite poor rates it will be appropriate for some. It is now possible to cash in pensions although that really ought to be a last resort or in extreme circumstances. Drawing an income from your pension (known as ‘drawdown’) will suit many although there is a vast range of options within this area so care is needed. This now also allows residual pension fund values to be passed tax efficiently to beneficiaries. Please note that one should not wait until drawing pension benefits before reviewing matters since many old style pensions are not compatible with the modern rules and so without action are tied to the old penal rules. The comments in this Editorial are only general and should not be taken as specific advice. It is important that you seek independent advice before taking any action on the above, or any other, subjects. It should be noted that the value of some investments can fall as well as rise therefore you may get back less than originally invested. Past performance is not necessarily a guide to the future. Independent Investment Associates Limited is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.

Fresh hope for Grange parkers Following the recent furore over the New Road car park in Kendal, Grange Now contacted South Lakeland District Council over its plans for

car parks in Grange. As reported over the last few months Grange workers have been asking SLDC for affordable parking for workers in the town. District Councillor, Eric Morrell has been working hard on this issue and has told Grange Now: “It is vital that all parts of South Lakeland are treated equally and that any changes which

Living Well in Grange

occur in Kendal are also put in place in Grange and other towns in the District. I am particularly concerned about the parking needs of people who come to work in the town centre and it has been clear for some time that Hampsfell Road car-park, which is currently underused, could help to meet that need.”

Soroptimists undertake a UK wide survey

The Queen’s Guide to the Sands, Cedric Robinson, opened the Living Well Fair in Grange Library on 15th September.

Grange Soroptimists are committed to combatting Trafficking and Slavery as part of the Soroptimists international’s ongoing work to improve the lives of women and girls worldwide. Local Soroptimists will be out in Grange doing this survey to help The UK Modern Slavery Training Delivery Group assess the public’s knowledge of Trafficking and Slavery in the UK so that they can improve public awareness and combat this crime.

It was an opportunity for people to have their blood pressure checked, find out about Alzheimer’s, Fibromyalgia, Singing for Memory and Walking for Health as well as talk to Age UK, Grange U3A, Cumbria Fire Service, Community Learning, the Community Development Team, Health & Wellbeing Coaches, GL Leisure and enjoy tea and cakes served by the Friends of Grange Library.

How much do you know about Slavery and Human Trafficking in the UK? Please help us by completing this anonymous survey either in Grange Library, on the street when approached by one of the Soroptimists or on line between 1st October and 7th October by using the link www.sigbi.org/ukpac/ survey

GOSH - Dales & Lakes Classic Car Show Donations The Classic Car Show on the Memorial Playing Fields was a particular success, in this, its 21st year. The weather was kind to us, and the crowds turned out to enjoy a great day of Classic Cars and bikes. High Society Jazz and many more attractions.

In the July edition we reported on a successful first year of business for Katie Sykes and her dog walking business, ‘Love of Paws’. To celebrate her anniversary Katie offered a £25 voucher for Lambert’s Pet Supplies.

We are pleased to announce that, yet again, we are able to make donations to local good causes. This year the Grange and Cartmel Scout Group will receive £250, and our principle donation will be £1500 to Butterfly Hugs, a local charity formed to raise money for young families affected by life limiting and terminal illness in the South Lakeland and Furness area. The Show is organised by GOSH (G-O-S Historic Vehicle Society) a small group of local enthusiasts. We meet at 8pm on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at Hampsfell House Hotel for a social gathering. Anyone with an interest in all matters ‘motoring’ is welcome to join us.

And the winner is...

We also need enthusiastic people to help ensure that the event continues for a further 21 years. Why not get involved in a good cause! Geoff Critchley is the contact on 015395 33217. We look forward to meeting you.

Katie said, “Congratulations to Aileen, who does an incredibly great job with her three rescue whippets, making sure they are loved and cared for, and continues her kindness by collecting items for various rescue centres. While she intends to buy her boys some treats at Lamberts Pet Supplies

with her voucher, she has said she will also spend some of it on treats for dogs who aren’t as fortunate.” “Having rescued a dog myself, and seen the fantastic work that rescue centres do, I will happily collect items that could be used by the rescue centres. Anything they can use is very much appreciated. If anyone has any surplus dog treats, food, dog toys/balls, old blankets or towels, cuddly toys, that they could donate to the rescue centres, please contact me on 07471 944500, and I will arrange collection.”

County Matters

At our recent Full County Council meeting the Youth Justice Strategic Plan was discussed and agreed.

The main thrust of the plan will assist Cumbria Youth Offending Service in aligning priorities for the year ahead and allow a focus on identified areas for development which should improve outcomes for our young people. The aim of the Strategy being to reduce youth crime and its impact on the community and in doing so contributes to developing the potential of young people in Cumbria. The full report and conclusions are available on the County website.

I have been asked again, by many residents, about the illegal parking habits of some motorists especially relating to pavement parking.

I have asked our parking enforcement team to concentrate on this anti-social and illegal practise which is causing distress and hardship to pedestrians that use the pavements in the Town centre. I would ask everyone to please respect other road users and pedestrians by not parking on pavements in our Town.

Kindest regards Bill Wearing Conservative County Councillor Grange Division

Cartmel Fun Run falls foul of the weather Sadly, organisers had to cancel this event again due to the terrible weather we had in the weeks leading up to the run. Organiser, Matthew Bacon, told Grange Now, “we had to cancel, not just because it was awful weather on the day, but because of all the rain that leading up to it which meant the course was in a terrible mess and wasn’t safe to run on, particularly for the younger ones.” Matthew hopes to run the event later in the year and is also looking at starting up a junior running club. We’ll keep you posted!

Grange now | OCTOBER 2017 - Next deadline 13th OCTOBER

Cumbria, LA11 7EY

Firstly I was really frustrated to learn that over the summer (May to August) on average one train a day was cancelled on the Furness Line. I know how much people around Grange rely on this service and also, to be honest, how poor the service can be at the best of times, so this poor level of reliability just compounds things. 110 trains cancelled over that period is four times as many as we experienced only a couple of years ago. I am getting really worried about how the Government is treating train services in our part of the world. We have seen the cancellation of the Lakes Line electrification and only a few weeks ago the Transport Minister wrote in an article that it was up to the North to sort out its train problems. This when £30 billion is being planned on a new train line cutting across London. I am planning to raise this forcibly with the Minister at the first opportunity I get when Parliament is back. I have been spending a lot of time working with the council to sort out the problems caused by the closure of the New Road car park. If you have been affected by this and want to share your views then please get in touch. I have a surgery in the Victoria Hall in Grange on the 21st October. If you have any issues please try to come along and if you can’t please email me at tim@timfarron.co.uk or call us on 01539 723 403. Thanks for your support Tim

Grange Golfers get in the swing for Rosemere appeal

Open Gardens Day was blooming successful About 230 people visited the recent Open Gardens Day event making it a huge success and those involved managed to raise nearly £1,000.

PHOTO: Bertie Evans (see letters page)

Many thanks to all the gardens who opened and made it a special day.

Local golfers got into the swing for Rosemere Cancer Foundation’s 20 Year Anniversary Appeal when they turned out to support Grange-over-Sands Golf Club’s inaugural Rosemere charity tournament.

The shotgun start competition, organised by club member Dave Cornes, raised £1,700 for the appeal and 68 golfers took part on the day. At an evening presentation, that followed the day’s play, club professional Nick Lowe awarded prizes to the top four pairs. In addition, Nick sponsored prizes for the nearest line (long) drive and nearest the pin shot. There was also a raffle and auction to end proceedings.

Organiser, Jan Tomlinson, told Grange Now, “We hope everyone enjoyed the hidden and secret gardens, large and small, as we try each time to have a different selection of gardens. We hope to spend some of the money on a new picnic table for the central garden area at the station.

with their awards but for the few who were disappointed, the keywords for improving are impact of planting and maintenance. This year we also awarded certificates for shops who created a floral window display. Four shops took part and we hope in future more will follow suit.

of Cumbria in Bloom in 2018. There are many groups who help improve Grange and it is a chance for us all to work together to promote Grange. We would like to feel that the town council, all gardening groups, litter pickers, groups involving young people, allotmenteers, environmental groups, U3A, social housing groups, and other organisations could help to form Grange’s entry. If your group feels that it wishes to be involved or if, as an individual, you wish to help then please contact Jan Tomlinson on 36919. If we gain enough support we will progress with our entry.

The rust is history We attended a property recently where the customer had asked us to clean all of the carpets in their home with the exception of the dining room; the reason they explained, was because of rust stains from metal table legs that a previous cleaning company had been unable to remove and they intended to replace that carpet. We asked the customer to let us try our process on it on a ‘no win no fee’ basis which they agreed to do. The results can be seen in the photos and as you might expect, the customer was delighted as it had saved them nearly £1,000 in replacement costs.

So if you have a carpet that you think can’t be ‘revived’ and are thinking of replacing it, give us a call first to see what we can do.

It could be a call that saves you ££££s We are a local, independent specialist carpet cleaning company. Utilising 21st century cleaning processes allied with state of the art equipment, we deliver exceptional results with carpets usually dry within 30 minutes of cleaning. We believe that our carpet cleaning system is probably the best currently available.

Thirlmere zipwire Both sides of the lake (and the equation)

A company that in 2014 abandoned plans for a zipwire in the Lake District after strong local opposition is proposing setting up a similar facility elsewhere in the National Park – and it has provoked strong feelings on each side of the debate.

Treetop Trek faced strong local opposition in 2014 to its scheme near Glenridding, but now wants to build a 1,200m-long line across Thirlmere. The zipwire would be part of an activity hub at the lake, which would also see the setting up of an 18km (11-mile) cycle track around Thirlmere.

No plans have yet been formally submitted to the Lake District National Park Authority, but Treetop Trek, which operates an adventure facility at Brockhole between Ambleside and Windermere, has already held a public consultation in St John’s in the Vale and a public meeting at Swirls car park just off the A591 near where the zipwire would swing across the reservoir. The proposed hub and zipwire would be built on United Utilities land. A Treetop Trek spokesman said: “This stunning part of the Lake District is not explored by many and often bypassed by those travelling from Windermere to Keswick along the busy A591. We will attract people in all seasons to this fantastic outdoor adventure and, in doing so, help local businesses thrive. “The project will generate 28 full time equivalent jobs for the local community and our proposed community fund will help us invest back into the local community.” Under the scheme, riders on the zipwire would travel twice

over the water from heights up to 130m above the ground, crossing the main A591 alongside the lake. Conservation charity Friends of the Lake District said it would object to the zipwire, which it described as ‘wholly inappropriate’ for the location.

“Although the structure itself may have a minimal impact we consider that while in use the proposal would cause significant detrimental impacts to the landscape character and diminish the tranquillity the Thirlmere valley possesses away from the A591. We are also concerned regarding the management of visitor numbers, increasing traffic and the provision of adequate parking for commercial development in this area of the national park.” In 2013, the Lake District authority turned down plans for a zipwire at Honister, submitted by the Honister Slate Mine. The plan split opinion, with the Friends of the Lake District and two local parish councils opposing the zipwire, but Everest summiteer and Cumbria resident Sir Chris Bonington in favour. Grange Now asked its columnist Clive Hutchby, the man currently revising Alfred Wainwright’s seven-volume Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells, to gauge opinion on the plan.

He said: “I posted on the major Lake District Facebook sites the famous self-portrait of Alfred Wainwright enjoying the view over Thirlmere that was included in the Raven Crag chapter in Book Three: The Central Fells, with the line of the zipwires drawn in. The response was phenomenal, with roughly a 50:50 split between people in

favour of the zipwire (usually under 30 and from Cumbria) and those against (probably older, many of them visitors). “Thirlmere as a zipwire site certainly divided opinion, but there was a lot more support for a zipwire at Honister, with many respondents who were against Thirlmere in favour.” Probably one of the most considered responses was from Rob Whythe, who wrote:

‘I’ve just re-watched the programme from 2011 about Mark Weir’s struggle to get the zip wire approved at Honister. That site was ideal for it, given the industrial heritage of the site and the fact that there used to be an aerial cableway bringing the slate down from the mountain to the work sheds. To see the planning committee struggling with it and eventually rejecting it was painful enough. If the same committee approves these new zip wires in a situation that doesn’t have that heritage, in a valley as peaceful and quiet as Thirlmere, which currently has none of the “adrenaline junkie” attractions, it would be such a kick in the teeth to Mark’s ambitions and vision. And it would blight a quiet area beyond recovery. This cannot be a serious suggestion.’ Clive added: “This issue could run and run.”

ART & MUSIC

Artiste of the month Victor Hindle

This month we are featuring a singer who will be well known to many of you, Victor Hindle. Victor, who turned 77 on 12th September, told Grange Now, “Like many families in the forties, the only entertainment we had was the radio, and the piano in the parlour. “Dad played for the family concerts which took place every Sunday after tea and we would each do a party piece and mine were: You are my sunshine and Jesus bids us shine.” Victor went on to say, “My older brother was a really good singer and he would always sing a light classical piece like, Passing By and, as church goers, we knew all the wellknown hymns.”

Possibly, a defining moment came for Victor when he took part in the open-age competition when he was 16. His older brother, Ronald, persuaded him to enter and to everyone’s delight he won with ‘I’ll walk Beside you’. In the 1950’s, Victor was trained by Joan Crompton from the D’oyly Carte Opera. The lessons cost £1 per week, a small fortune back then, which Victor’s sister kindly paid for. Victor has been fortunate enough to have had many talented people accompany him on the piano including his wife of 55 years Dorothy. The couple, who were originally from Bolton, moved here in 2006 after holidaying here at the former Kents Bank House.

Lively concert with Flookburgh Band Flookburgh Band will once again be holding a concert of lively and popular music, for young and old, at Flookburgh Church. The concert was a big success last year with everyone saying they had a great time singing along.

A fundraising event, to raise money for amenities for Bridge House residents, will take place on Saturday 7th October. Two excellent local bands will be playing on the night: Rusty Bullets and The Underdogs. The fun starts at 7.30pm and tickets, priced £4, are available from Cockles Convenience Store or Bridge House. You can also pay on the door (£5). Ravenstown Club, Ravenstown.

The last wish of a dying friend provides the theme for this funny and moving, semi autobiographical story from Tangram Theatre coming to Arnside. Five years ago, James’s best friend was diagnosed with an aggressive heart cancer and told he had three months to live. His last wish was to be given a full Viking burial. This is the remarkable, hilarious and heart-lifting story of how James actually gave his best mate, Tom the

Double bill of comedy for Grange Drama

The daily office lives of two female employees in an obscure department of a big organisation are threatened by change in Alan Bennett’s Green Forms while The Allergic Audience, written by Cabbage Patch creator Joan Greening, is a tale of the attempts of two wacky women at running a Fringe theatre venue.

Date for your diary: The Christmas concert this year will take place on Saturday 16th December at Victoria Hall. Concert starts at 7pm.

Team Viking

Together, and alone, the trio have raised thousands of pounds for charity over the years and still continue to do so. Next month we will be featuring Sylvia and daughter Sue.

Sue Almond, Kat Arbuckle, Benita Finch and Deborah Powell, from the Ladies Day cast, are busy rehearsing for Grange Drama’s next production. It opens at 7.30pm on Thursday 26 October 2017, for three nights, at Victoria Hall, Grange.

The concert will take place at Flookburgh Church on Saturday 11th November. The fun starts at 6.30pm and admission is a very modest £7 for adults and there is no charge for accompanied children. No tickets needed just pay on the door. Don’t miss this great night of entertainment.

Rusty Bullets and The Underdogs in concert for Bridge House

Victor’s inspiration was the late Scottish tenor, Kenneth McKellar but unlike Mr McKellar, who stopped performing at the age of 68, Victor has no plans to retire anytime soon. As well as solo performances, Victor is part of a well-known and very busy trio of himself, fellow singer, Sue Harrison and former soloist and accompanying piano player, Sylvia Trohear. Victor told us, “my singing has been revived with Sylvia and Sue and performing with them has given me the best times ever”.

send-off he wanted.

In childhood, James, Tom and their friend Sarah would enjoy re-enacting The Vikings - the film with Kirk Douglas and Tony Curtis. Following his terminal diagnosis, Toms asks them to fulfill his last wish of a Viking funeral, put out to sea in a flaming boat. Exploring friendship and terminal illness and combining storytelling, comedy and live music, Team Viking won the Vaults Festival Origins Award and was a runaway hit at the 2016 Edinburgh Festival.

and lighten it. If your soil is particularly claggy or heavy it’s often a good idea to add a bit of grit or gravel, or even vermiculite as well, to improve the drainage. Perhaps, most importantly, try to never ever stand on the soil, put boards down if it’s unavoidable, to avoid compacting the soil. If children have the run of the allotment, try cutting boards into ‘dinosaur’ or ‘duck’ or ‘dinosaur duck’ (aren’t ducks dinosaurs anyway?) footprint shaped stepping stones for them, though these may get slippery so (disclaimer!) avoid using them in wet weather.

GROWN WITH RANDOM LOVE

All too quickly October or ‘Stoptober’ the month before ‘Movember’ has come around, and it’s a good month to think about the condition of your soil rather than stopping something or ‘Mo’ing whatever.

Even if you don’t ‘dig’ digging and are hoping to establish a ‘no dig’ system, when your soil is heavy doing this can accelerate the soil improving process and save a year or three’s patient mulching

You might have felt during the wet weather this year that your was soil became very heavy or hard to work, and if so, you will find it beneficial to dig in some organic material to try

because as effective and dutiful as worms are, they aren’t especially quick, which is perhaps not surprising when you consider what they’re getting paid in. Regardless of the above it’s a good time to get mulch down on any vacant beds to give those plucky worms and other little beasts a change to get to work on it and releasing the nutrients before it gets too cold. Well rotted manure is the best thing to use but your own homemade compost, old compost out of pots, well composted wood chips can be useful or even leaves if you’ve any trees around or overhanging your allotment. I’d collect and burn the leaves so you can use the ash and prevent the build up of any diseases or pests.

Lindale farmers, David and Bekka Corrie-Close, have been named as one of five finalists in The British Farming Awards. Their business, The Horned Beef Company, will be featured on a forthcoming episode of Countryfile which is due to air on Sunday 1st October, 2017. The husband and wife team are not from a farming background but their passion for improving nature has led them into a career in agriculture and they hope that telling their story “will inspire others to follow, no matter how challenging.” This article first appeared on the Cumbria Crack website.

In good weather, 11 Grange Ramblers had a pleasant walk from Leighton Moss RSPB to the hill top in front of Leighton Hall where the views were enjoyed during the morning’s coffee break. Then it was off through Strickland woods to Warton Crag for wide views over the Bay during lunch perched on a limestone cliff edge! The return leg was by track and road to Quaker Stang, up Heald Brow and onto Silverdale Green and Bottoms Lane then to Burton Well crossing Lamberts Meadow. Extra care was taken to avoid any flying golf balls as we crossed Silverdale Golf Course back to Leighton Moss RSPB.

3. Turn right behind the seats, through a gate into the woods and onto Peter Lane. 4. Turn right and walk 1/3 mile then turn right at the Piggiers. Note there is no finger post here but follow the track on the edge of Leek Hill Wood to a gate onto Occupation Road. 5. Turn right and walk 50 yards then turn left through a gate to the track towards Warton Crag. Proceed through Strickland Woods climbing to the old finger post and pass the Jubilee iron basket to Crag View

6. Return to the finger post and take the left track, through 2 gates to Occupation Road. Turn left down to Warton Crag Road then right to Crag Foot to join New Road towards Silverdale

FOOD & DRINK

Warm your belly with hearty seasonal favourites this October! Like most people, we have now given up hope of an Indian summer or indeed just a few days of sunshine.

Cumbrian Charcuterie Pizza Cumbrian charcuterie, Woodall’s of Waberthwaite has been producing fresh and air-dried ham since 1828. The latest of their hams to be showcased in the Low Sizergh Barn farm shop is Black Combe, a ham that’s hand rubbed with a spiced dry cure mix and then smoked over oak for 5 hours before being left to naturally air dry for at least 6 months. Part of its charm lies in the fact that it’s named after the fell that’s just visible from the village where it all began over 180 years ago. As the nights draw in and we head towards the back end of the year, when Hannah Woodall first began using her butchery and charcuterie skills to see her own and neighbouring families through the lean months, it feels timely to be sharing one of their recipes. Although it’s a long way from the food of the early 19th century, it’s easy, tasty and shows just what a well-produced slice of ham can bring to the table. Ingredients

Method

• 1 red onion • 40g Woodall’s Black Combe Air Dried Ham • 2tsp basil oil • 1 pack mozzarella pearls • 70g Cumberland Salami • 50g rocket leaves • 100ml passata • 300g strong bread flour • 1tsp salt • 1tbsp olive oil • 200ml warm water

1. Preheat the oven to 240C/Gas 8.

2. Put the flour into a mixing bowl and stir in the yeast and salt. Pour in the water and oil, bringing together until you have a soft, wet dough. 3. Knead for 5 minutes on a floured surface, until smooth. Cover and set aside to rise.

Nevertheless, the onset of autumn brings its own delights, particularly in the culinary department! Think warming stews, pies and bakes for when the nights start to draw in. Think weekends spent gathering and enjoying the early autumn harvests of blackberries, sloes, apples and damsons. Our generously-filled, golden pies are always a big seller at this time of year! There is definitely something rather glorious about tucking into a piping hot pie on a cold day, its comfort food at its best. We also try to use seasonal produce where possible, so this autumn we have combined a few classic ingredients to create two, tasty new pies that simply must be tried! • Pork & Bramley Apple Pie • Pork & Chilli Jam Pie (made with Hawkshead Relish Chilli Jam) Our family-recipe Pork Pies have been baked here at our

shop in Grange for over 30 years and we are regularly quoted as an authority on all things Pork-Pie. But we were truly delighted to reach the dizzy heights of the top of the Lancashire Pork Pie Appreciation Society’s League Table this summer! Some of the comments from the tasting panel included ‘Wow!!’ ‘Excellent all round’ and ‘Beautiful balance between pastry, pork and jelly’. If you are interested to read their full report it can be found at www.lancashirepork pieappreciationsociety.com Look out for our Bonfire Night & Sausage Week Special Offers in next month’s Grange Now!

4. Split the dough in two and roll out on a floured surface until the base is thin.

5. Spread the passata over the bases and top with your chosen topping. Scatter with mozzarella and bake for 8-10 minutes until crisp.

Cartmel Quakers would like to invite anyone wishing to reflect on issues concerning peace, whether that be within ourselves, our community, or our world, to join us in a comfortable and relaxed setting each month and make ‘Time for Peace’.

Our first ‘Time for Peace’ was held on Thursday 21st September, the International Day of Peace, and the next meeting will take place on Saturday 21st October from 5.15pm to 6.00pm

The members of the Women’s Network Group held their annual coffee morning in August. It was busy, and well supported. The event raised £378.10p and this goes towards the running of the group. At the AGM, surplus funds are donated to various local charities, after a donation is made to the church. Thank you to everyone, helpers, attendees, those who arrange the room and those who clear away. We couldn’t have done it

St Paul’s Church Our Harvest Service will be at 11.00am on the 1st October. The service will be followed by a Jacob’s Join lunch.

Monday 11th October will mark the 165th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone of St Paul’s by the Earl of Burlington in 1852. Miss Sarah Anne Clarke of Liverpool had taken the lead in raising the funds for the building of the new church. While visiting Grange in 1851 she became concerned that there was no chapel in the village for local people to attend. At this time Grange comprised just 40

Time for Peace

It is the new season for various activities, in particular our Women’s Guild, whose meetings begin on Wednesday, 11th October at 2.30pm with a Devotional.

Later in the month, on Saturday 28th at 10am-12noon, they will be holding their Charity Coffee

at Cartmel Quaker Meeting House on Haggs Lane. As with the last session, Fairtrade tea and coffee will be served afterwards.

People are invited to bring a poem, passage or image related to the theme of peace to share, but this is optional. Alternatively people can write down names of people and/or situations that they would like others to hold in their thoughts, or as we Quakers would say, ‘hold in the light’. If you don’t wish to bring a reading, or write anything down, please

come anyway to listen, enjoy and be present. All are welcome – this is a free gathering. For more information, please contact Izzy Thorne on 015395 34910. Future ‘Time for Peace’ sessions will be held from 5.15pm to 6.00pm on Thursday 16th November and Saturday 16th December.

houses with 200 residents. Sarah set herself the task of raising the necessary funds, estimated at £2000 to provide a church. A number of sponsors supported Sarah’s efforts and an appeal was published to attract wider support. The fundraising was successful and the church was consecrated on the 13th October 1853. Sarah died at Bay Villa in Grange in 1857 and was buried in the graveyard of Field Broughton Church. After the morning service at St Paul’s on the 11th, a group from the congregation will visit Sarah Anne’s grave to lay a wreath. The group will then have lunch at High Newton.

Morning in aid of Bendrigg Trust and Mercy Ships. Your support will be very welcome.

This month, all the morning services will be at the Methodist Church. Please note the ‘Special’ detailed below.

Church goes to Toast Church For the first time, our joint morning service at the Methodist Church on Sunday, 15th October will be a joint service with Toast Church at 9.30am. From time-totime, our Methodist friends join their families for a more informal worship session at this earlier

26 September, at 2.30pm. Everyone welcome. Details of speakers can be found on the Church noticeboards, and also in Grange Library.

Afternoon Tea Service Do you know anyone who can’t manage to get to church in the morning? Are you looking after someone who has a disability or memory problems? All the local churches are working together to offer a short afternoon service every month in the URC church hall at 2.30pm starting on Monday 16th October. Would you or anyone you know like to join us? You would be very welcome and refreshments will be served after the service. time, and this is our opportunity to get to know the younger members of the Methodist family in Grange. Something to look forward to I’m sure. Please come along. For those who would like something additional, and perhaps quieter, there will be an evening service at 6pm. We were sorry to hear of the death of our former Treasurer, choir member, & Elder, Gordon Eccles. He is sadly missed and our thoughts are with his family at this time. Enjoy the Autumn colours!

John Muir Conserver Award

The John Muir Trust is about discovering, exploring, conserving and sharing wild places, with the ‘Conserver Award’ being the top accolade. Philippa B, Year 11 pupil/Head Girl, and Saskia R, a previous pupil now attending Lancaster Girls’ Grammar, recently became the first students to complete this through Cartmel Priory School, entirely in their own time.

A key part of the award is to raise awareness about the local environment and how to protect it. Philippa and Saskia carried out voluntary work with the Cumbria Wildlife Trust, the National Trust and RSPB. This provided the opportunity to talk about the environment and the John Muir Award to a wide range of visitors, as well as taking an active part in protecting and enhancing the environment itself.

One of the activities participated in was horse logging, whereby

On 14th September, classes 2 to 4 went on a fun-filled day out to the Westmorland County Show. This trip made for a perfect opportunity to bring our current whole school learning theme of ‘From Field to the Table’ to life for the children. Whilst there, we saw cows, horses, alpacas, poultry, goats, sheep and even Prince Charles! We had the chance to speak to him, and Prince Charles recommended that we try some locally produced gingerbread.

timber is extracted using a natural, low impact method that protects vegetation and the wider environment. The girls also supported the Osprey Project as volunteers at Bassenthwaite and Foulshaw Moss. In addition, they helped at Howe Ridding and Leighton Moss, assisted with the ‘Big Wild Sleep Out’ at Ullswater and helped with cleaning, clearing and planting in various local habitats and nature reserves. Finally, they completed and submitted surveys on lichen and trees in the local environment for OPAL and studied the geology of Whitbarrow Scar. Philippa and Saskia have been exploring and discovering the local and wider environment on foot, by bike and on horseback, as well as going on a wild camping expedition in the North Lakes. The above indicates an amazing effort, which required great commitment. Dr P Williams Headteacher

their leadership skills at Castle Head and thinking about what it means to be a good leader in our school. This week, our Key Stage 2 children have visited the Westmorland County Show. It is amazing how much the children learn each time they visit the show, from information about farming techniques to the role of the police and local organisations. Lindale Pre-school Nursery have also had a good start to the year, welcoming new children and making the most of being outdoors.

Acorn Montessori The new academic year has got off to a flying start, with the new children settling in and integrating well with existing pupils. With colours being our main focus this half term, the children have been comparing different shades of each colour and learning songs and listening to stories relating to the topic. The children have harvested and tasted apples and plums from our garden and will be making blackberry and apple tarts. We have lots of exciting activities planned for the next few weeks including a music and rhythm session and a walk in the woods to see the Autumn colours.

The school’s international work includes a strong partnership with Nepal and in response to the hydro power project in the village the school links with, The Royal Society and British Council created a video with the children which was used on the Connecting Classrooms website as a teaching resource and promotional video entitled ‘Renewable Energy - How can we keep the lights on?’” The children in Y5/6 also looked at the plight of the Lemur Leaf Frog in Brazil and how they could have an impact on their long term survival. What really impressed the assessor was how the well-embedded Nepal link has led to engagement with a very different school in Liverpool and hopes for some class to class reciprocal visits to build on аn Identity and Belonging project. Our International Coordinators Paula Whinfield and Abi Johnson ensure that an international dimension is part of all they do so that the children are informed, engaged citizens of the world. Gender and equality will form part of this year’s action plan.

For more information about the International School Award, please contact our team at schools@ britishcouncil.org

We have been thrilled to welcome our 10 new reception starters this September. They have transitioned smoothly through to Class 1, following sessions before the summer with their new teacher. Our Year 6s seem to be relishing the responsibility of their new position in their final year in primary; taking care of our new pupils admirably. The children throughout school are enjoying a variety of topics this half term from The Shang Dynasty, to Ancient Egypt and The Great Fire of London. We have visiting sports coaches for multi-skills and football this term, as well as after-school sports, journalism and drama clubs. Music continues to thrive with lessons available in violin, guitar, ukulele and piano. The beginning of term has

Allithwaite Primary Our new academic year has got off to an enthusiastic and thoughtful start.

Our school value this term is ‘responsibility’ and the children (and staff) were excited to see our new reflection garden on our return to school. Unfortunately, we have been unable to use our garden during worship yet due to the inclement weather! However, we have exciting plans to start a prayer wall very soon.

Our School Council focuses on charity work and the development of whole school projects. Ethos Group Snowy Owls have recycled old wellies into beautiful planters for our reflection garden. The Tawny Owls used old plastic bottles to create bright and colourful bird feeders. In the barn owls class, the children are learning about fairtrade and understanding how to make responsible decisions about purchasing products and helping others in the world. The Eagle Owls have made some miniature prayer boxes with their responsibility prayers for the world written inside, which we will

We eagerly anticipate the airing of the interviews! be displaying in Church soon. On Wednesday 13th September, the whole school enjoyed a responsibility day at Castlehead Outdoor Activity centre. We worked in mixed aged house groups to complete a range of team games with older children taking responsibility for organising and supporting the younger children. We also worked in our new class groups, an opportunity to bond and ensure that we were showing thoughtfulness towards each other.

tracts players from all over Cumbria was again Carcraft, many thanks to Dave Gears for his continued support. Ranging through time from the end of the Ice Age to the beginning of the 21st Century Nick will trace the transformation of the British landscape from a European peninsula of glacier and tundra to an island of cities and countryside. The lectures begin at 7.15pm in the Victoria Hall.

Grange Rotary

A most enjoyable Coffee Morning/ Bring and Buy on 19 August at the Heysham home of Ron and Christine Carey raised the sum of £340 for Polio Eradication. On 23 August, the Club heard a truly inspirational talk by Cherelle Ashley entitled, ‘Sustainable Futures start with a Vision’. Still in her early 20’s, she has already ‘made a difference’ to deserving children’s lives by getting involved in various charities including Teach First, whose mission is to challenge the impossible and ensure that no child’s educational dreams should be written off because of their background. On 6 September, David Simpson unravelled the mysteries of Rotary’s best kept secret, Rotary Foundation, our own in-house charity, which in 2016/2017 is celebrating its centennial anniversary. How does it work? Essentially it gives Clubs the opportunity to apply for Grants for projects which matter to them both locally and internationally. Projects are funded by a grant system between Clubs and the Foundation. It is supported solely by voluntary contributions from Rotarians and covers Peace and Conflict Resolution, Disease Prevention and Treatment, Water and Sanitation, Maternal and Child Health, Basic Education and Literacy as well as Economic and Community Development.

Cartmel Peninsula Local History Society

Despite the wet weather there was a good turnout for the fascinating talk by Dr Bill Shannon on Dr Kuerden’s 1685 map, and other early maps of the Cartmel Peninsula. The history of mapping in the area included the 1025-1050 Anglo Saxon Map, 1410 Gough Map and the first printed map in 1540. Dr Kuerden (1623- 1702) was a medical doctor from Cuerden near Leyland who developed an inter-

est in history and surveying. He collaborated with Christopher Towneley in compiling material and had ambitious plans produce a 5 volume History of Lancashire. Eleven volumes of his manuscripts including 84 maps were discovered in the 1950’s in Towneley Hall. The maps include detailed surveys of roads (including buildings, notable inhabitants and roadside features like shrubs and walls) on the southern part of Cartmel Peninsula and a survey of the boundary of Cartmel Parish. Unfortunately Dr Kuerden died without publishing any of his materials however Dr Shannon intends to publish a book about Dr Kuerden and his research. Next Talk – 5th October - Rob David Waiter, Miner, Butcher, Spy: Germans and Austrians in Cumbria during the First World War.

Grange over Sands Golf Club

As we come to the end of the major competitions for this year, with just a few knock-out matches to be played, we are now looking at different formats for the winter competitions. The Pro has several Winter Opens planned, starting with the first one on Sunday 29th October, with one a month following after that. These are open to members and visitors in any combination of Men, Ladies and Junior, Lady and mixed prizes (subject to minimum entry) plus nearest the pin. These ‘Opens’ are a great way to keep your swing going over the winter months. We hosted the Junior girls final between Durham and Lancaster, and also the semi-finals and finals of the Cumbria Junior boys this last month. It was a pleasure to watch the talent of these young people. Our popular monthly Quiz nights will be starting this next month and we welcome members and visitors to come along and test their knowledge, these are fun nights with supper provided. Keep a look-out for other social events we have planned over the winter months which are for members and visitors.

3 Parks Group

In the Ornamental Gardens the District Council has repaired part of the concrete path which was damaged by tree roots. Unfortunately since then there has been a spate of vandalism in the area. The cones around the repaired path were thrown into the pond and the barriers taken down. The stone surround of the Pickling Spring has been damaged and some coping stones have disappeared. The garden leaflet dispenser has been broken and windows in the Duck Hut pushed out. The Group is continuing the maintenance and improvement of the gardens and have planted over a thousand bulbs; bluebells; daffodils; and snowdrops. A meeting has been requested with the District Council Green Spaces Officer to discuss the on-going winter programme for the volunteer gardeners. The ‘Scenes of Change’ exhibition held in the Victoria Hall and the Library which was set up in conjunction with The Photographic Society, Cartmel History Society, Edwardian Festival, Vintage Car and Grange Carnival was very successful and a donation was given to the Victoria Hall funds. Ron Shapland, Chairman.

LETTERS

Letters to the Editor are published on the understanding that they may have to be shortened to fit available space. Publication of a letter in no way reflects the views of Grange Now. All letters must be accompanied by a name and address even if the correspondent requests anonymity. In this case ‘name and address supplied’ will be added.

Dear Editor,

It was a joy to visit the town’s open garden’s last month. People had certainly gone to a lot of trouble. I was particularly impressed with the colour and range of plants that were being grown. One house I visited in Fernleigh

Dear Editor,

Thank you. I wish to thank my family, neighbours, friends, members of St Paul’s Church, the Fell Church, St Mary’s Hospice Friendship and Support group and holiday makers for all the beautiful cards I received during my stay in Preston Royal Infirmary.

Dear Editor

I am the Secretary of the Grangeover-Sands Civic Society and, on behalf of the Society, I am asking for the help of your readers.

Most people in Grange will have had problems with accessibility at one time or another, for example having to step into the roadway because of an inconsiderately or illegally parked vehicle. For people of restricted mobility (not just wheelchair/mobility scooters users but people with pushchairs and/or small children) the situation is much more arduous (the option of stepping into the road may either not be available or it may be highly dangerous).

Dear Editor

Grange-over-Sands and district has an over-supply of market housing. These are often bought by second homeowners and leads to property asking prices are beyond the means of many local buyers.

In April 2016, an appeal Planning Inspector stated that the provision of six ‘affordable’ homes was a material consideration in his decision to grant planning permission for a development site at Jack Hill because the ‘affordable homes’ would benefit the local community. At the end of August, just as this site is nearing completion, pressure was put on SLDC’s Planning Committee members allow the developer to reduce the number of ‘affordable’ homes,at Jack Hill, from six, to three. The developer claimed that the site was no longer viable with six ‘affordable’ homes.Planning committee members were not happy about this but they were advised, by a senior Planning Officer, that Government policy allows developers to define viability as their

Avenue was quite petite but packed a tremendous display of flora, it even had a visiting badger! I also greatly admired the gentleman’s neat back passage, giving the sense of space with subtle fragrance from the many climbers. Well Done! Bertie Evans

Special thanks also to the surgeon and the staff on Ward 2c for their excellent nursing.

All your love and prayers are much appreciated. I am now pleased to say I am making a good recovery. May God bless you all for your kindness and caring. Carole Gregory

The Civic Society is attempting to gauge the scale and nature of accessibility problems in Grangeover-Sands so that it may use the evidence to lobby the local councils/Councillors, Cumbria Police and other interested bodies for improvements to accessibility in the town. If any of your readers have information about, or views on, the issue of accessibility in Grange could they please forward them to Harry Ashcroft. Harry’s contact details are 015395 35910. Yours faithfully Gerard Jones

need to make at least an 18% profit per site. They were also reminded that SLDC had been required to pay £40,000 when the developer won their appeal against SLDC’s refusal of the developer’s original planning application for this site.

The land north of Jack Hill was a desirable green field site. The developer was aware of its geological characteristics before they submitted their original planning application. Their comprehensive site test pit data is dated June 2014. All the associated foundation costs should have been factored into their business plan. In addition, a unique Early Bronze Age burial site has been bulldozed and sections of a Medieval hedgerow have been removed to accommodate this development. It is outrageous that Government policy can be manipulated to allow developers to renege on their commitment to provide 35% ‘affordable’ housing after the houses have been built. Yours faithfully, Valerie H Kennedy (Mrs)

Property Department Manager and Valuer

FRIENDLY HONEST PROPERTY ADVICE

Bucking the trend With a successful summer behind us and the renewed interest of the autumn market in front of us things seem healthy for the Grange property market.

However, recent reports from the Property Reporter have suggested that there are still many areas, in the North West especially, that have still not recovered to 2007 pre-recession value levels.

Niche markets, such as those across the South Lakes, react differently and recover quicker than other areas of the country and thanks to the high desirability and draw of the lifestyle and location within the South Lakes Peninsula we have seen a successful recovery and a vibrant property market in our area.

Recently we have seen an increase in property sales and a slight decrease in stock levels. As more houses sell, the market becomes a fairer playing field for both the buyer and the seller. Property once again reflects true value as buyers are now paying more realistic prices thanks to the lower levels of stock available. Basic supply and demand means that to secure the property a purchaser wants, and with more competition out there, they need to pay a level closer to the true value of the property. Across the twelve months from June 2016 to June 2017 Poole Townsend successfully agreed sales at an average of 96% of asking price on all of our property sold across the company. With the general prices in the area at, or even in some cases above, that of pre-recession 2007 we are happy to report that we seem to have avoided the lack of recovery only too evident in other areas of the country. The property market traditionally improves from September through to Christmas time, with activity continuing last year through December and January, so if you are thinking about marketing your property – now is the time.
